In simple terms, heap leaching means the removal in solution of valuable elements from a heap of material, and their recovery from that solution. The heap of material can consist of essentially unprocessed ore, sub-ore, low grade gangue and country rock, tailings from other upgrading processes, or artificial materials such as slags or furnace and flue products. The solvents can be solutions of acids (commonly sulphuric acid because of cost) or of other chemicals such as cyanides. Because of cost factors the solutions are aqueous; because of this, leaching operations may be curtailed in cold-climate areas. The guiding principle must surely be `large volume / low cost'. Since solutions are generally easier to manage than gases, there is a strong incentive for replacing roasting of materials by leaching, eg arsenical gold ores. Where sulphides are present in the material to be leached, these may provide the necessary acid, with or without the aid of bacteria, to dissolve and extract the recoverable metals. The mineralogical aspects of the operation relate to the nature of the `ore' and gangue minerals present in the heap, their textural relationships, and their effect on the process itself.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides an internationally standardised framework for estimating the environmental impacts associated with products or services (International Organisation for Standardisation, 2006). A particular strength of LCA is the ability to consider indirect impacts that occur at different stages of a product’s life (eg raw material acquisition, manufacture, use, disposal or recycling) and through its supply chain (Figure 1). A wide variety of impact categories are able to be considered by LCA, such as the potential contribution to global warming, ozone depletion, marine eco-toxicity or freshwater eutrophication.CSIRO has a long history of using LCA to compare the environmental impacts associated with alternative mining, mineral processing and metal production technologies (Haque and Norgate, 2014; Norgate and Haque, 2012, 2013). The future of any mining company depends on maintaining and growing its access to high-quality mineral resources. Often the true size of a given resource is not fully recognised until after mining has commenced. Also, the strong desire to increase production puts pressure to expand the resource base of the mine to get maximum value out of the capital employed. This, plus diminishing M&A opportunities and declining world-class greenfield discovery rates, makes brownfields exploration a high priority activity in any operating company. For the success and long-term survival of the company it is critical that this is done well. The primary aim of brownfields exploration is to find or acquire new deposits within economic transport distance of an existing mine that will add materially to shareholder value through: mine or capacity expansion, displacement of lower-margin ore from the mine plan, preserving and extending the mine life, and ensuring potential value is understood in order to maximise potential future mine development or exit. A number of strategic principles are important in any program designed to achieve these aims: understanding the life of mine (LOM) production profile and the related key drivers for exploration, understanding the dynamic nature of the brownfields search space, understanding and measuring depletion of the brownfields search space, understanding the potential of the near-mine region, investing in exploration technology to expand the search space, and investing in a basic geological understanding of the ore-environment. Examination of the LOM profile will highlight critical issues facing development plans for the mine including future grade and throughput issues, key technology requirements or innovations and scenarios for increased production. Exploration targets in the brownfields program should address these key issues. Often it is as æsimpleÆ as keeping mine development sufficiently far ahead of extraction to allow time for the various phases of exploration and resource assessment drilling. Because of the low additional capital costs required, expansion of the brownfields search space is strongly leveraged to: metal prices, development of new markets, incremental operating cost reductions, strategic changes in downstream requirements in integrated businesses, depletion of higher unit-value ores, and new technologies (both extraction and exploration). Therefore the brownfields search space is likely to incrementally expand through time and must be regularly reviewed. This is also important as any given search space will be progressively exhausted, resulting in smaller and higher cost discoveries. It is therefore important to monitor and critically review sustained trends of increasing brownfields discovery cost. The first wave of discoveries in any camp are usually empirically driven and do not need a strong geological understanding. However, an improved geological understanding is critical to making the next generation of hidden discoveries. To illustrate these points, a case study was carried out on the exploration and development history of the Kambalda nickel camp. Over a period of 40 years, more than 40 deposits were found containing over 1.7 million tonnes of nickel metal. Efficient mines need to maintain reserves for operating flexibility. Consequently, the company needs to clearly understand the global resource in order to maximise its full potential. In addition, understanding the full brownfields potential earlier in the development of a deposit rather than later, creates optionality through the flexibility that this understanding brings to future development choices. To ensure best practice in attaining this aim, the roles and responsibilities of the exploration team and the mine operation should be clearly understood. It is important for the explorers and the operators to have shared views about what needs to be done. Typically, mine operators would be accountable for identifying future resource requirements to support the life-of-mine production schedule whilst explorers would be accountable to ensure best-practice assessment of brownfields exploration opportunities. This would include an assessment of the global undiscovered endowment in the regional near-mine area. The balance between brownfield exploration drilling and resources to reserve conversion will need to be decided to ensure efficient operations are maintained. Both need to agree the optimum level of brownfields funding taking into account: urgency to replace or grow reserves, and quality of opportunities (relative to those elsewhere). The ultimate cost of ignoring the full brownfields potential of an operating asset can be significant, ranging from inefficient and poorly planned operations, lost opportunity cost and resultant value through under-utilised resources and, in the worst case, early exit from the asset at the bottom of the commodity cycle û leaving behind huge amounts of shareholder value.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. Case studies are presented for a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided.The auditing process as described here for coal mines, and coal handling and preparation plants, is equally applicable to the processing of other mineral ores, metalliferous mines, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

The patterns of flow of reaction gases through the flash furnace at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter were simulated in a 1:20 scale model using a flow of water. Particular features of the flow down the reaction shaft, through the settling chamber and into the uptake leading to the waste-heat boiler were examined. Inferences were made concerning the effects of the patterns of flow on the efficiency of the smelting reaction, on the entrainment of dust by the gas stream and on the erosion of the refractory lining of the furnace. In addition, the effects of geometrical modifications to the arrangement of the concentrate burners and to the profile of the settling chamber were explored by making these changes to the model and observing the resulting variations in the patterns of flow.

The use of pipeline-c to carry crude'oil and petroleum pro-ducts is a reliable and economic*Way to transport large quantities of oil. The length and size of these pipelines have continued to grow throughout the world as the demand for petroleum has in-creased and as the price of other transportation-methods has risen. At the present time pipelines 'can move a barrel of oil a distance of 100 miles at an average cost of ,80.06 U.S. dollars.The major elements in pipeline design are discussed. Methods of calculating pressure drop and horsepower requirements are pre-sented. These are variations of standard equations.in which the elements of each equation are expressed in terms common to the petroleum industry. Major equipment is discussed., particularlyas it relates to operation and economics.Cost data are presented to aid in preliminary economic ana-lysis. Curves illustrate the cost of oil transportation at flow rates between 10,000 and 500,000 barrels per day and permit the selection of pipe diameter-which will result in minimum operating costs.

Goldsworthy Mining Limited is currently mining iron ore at an annual rate of 7 million tons from several small orebodies, each of which exhibit wide variations in iron, phosphorus, silica and alumina contents. Each orebody is mined at its average ore reserve grade and therefore mine planning and grade control techniques have had to be tailored to achieve a constant production blend.

Gold Fields Ghana Ltd (GF Ghana) currently operates an underground mine at Tarkwa, in south--west Ghana. The mine was operated by Tarkwa Goldfields Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the State Gold Mining Corporation of Ghana (SGMC). The mine was making operating losses and in a poor state of repair. Tarkwa Goldfields retrenched all the staff and GF Ghana assumed management responsibility for its own account on I July 1993.

The rnunber of Cenozoic volcanoes which has already been found in China surpasses 600. An ancient Chinese tourist, Xu Xiake (1587-1641 in the Ming Dynasty), mentioned in his travel notes the volcanoes and hot 'springs in Tengchong, a country of the Yunnan Province, 400 years ago. In 1927, the geologist, Yun Zhanli, expounded generally on the recent volcano distribution in China. In the '70's, China not only accomplished aerial photography and produced topographic and geological naps covering the whole country, but also obtained a new understanding of the geographic distribution and process of development of the Cenozoic volcanoes through Landsat imagery; interpretation and ground verification, together with C14 isotope dating and analysis of volcanic rocks.

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) developed a new construction method (the M-2 method) that could drive a long, curved small-diameter tunnel (4>1.2 m) without human labor. This method employs the cast-in-place lining system, using quick-hardening resin mortar, so that it can greatly increase the driving distance and execute both long distance driving (longer than 500 m) and curved driving with a radius of curvature of 200 m. Furthermore, the central control system with a mini-computer in a vertical shaft enables all work in a small-diameter tunnel, i.e., excavation, lining, and transportation of excavated soil and materials, without human labor. NTT conducted several field tests and a Practical Application Test (P.A.T.) under a public road bearing great traffic. Good results were obtained and the practicability of this method was demonstrated. Therefore, from now on, NTT will apply this ii-2 method to drive telecommunication cable tunnels in urban areas. This method will also be applicable to constructing public tunnel facilities, such as for water, sewage, electricity and gas.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft. Renison Limited operates an underground tin mine employing both cut and fill and open stope methods, at Renison Bell on the west coast of Tasmania. Mining in the region commenced in the 1890's. Development of the current mining operation commenced in 1965. The ventilation system used at Renison in its present configuration is a function of current mining methods, orebody characteristics and prevailing Tasmanian Department of Mines Inspection Regulations.

THE South Mine. owned by the Broken Hill South Limited, occupies mineral leases 7 and 8 on the Broken Hill lode. The ore reserves are 4,250,000 tons, and the ore hauled for the year ended June, 1930, was 387,000 tons, the total to date being 7,840,000.The mine, down to the 1070-ft. level, is naturally divided into two sections, the northern and southern ends. Ore extraction is practically completed in the northern end to this horizon, while the southern end is developed ready for a concentrated attack.Fig. 1 shows the state of the 8215-ft. level, after connection to the new shaft.The levels above and below to the 1070-ft. level are in a similar condition, while below the 1070-ft. level the stoping has been confined to the north end, but not completed. The south end on these levels is also partially developed.The ore at present is hauled up No. 1 shaft, which is centrally situated to the present workings. This shaft was put into use in 1909, and in 20 years has had approximately 5,000,000 tons of ore pulled through it.The company, having proved the existence of large ore-bodies in the southern end of the mine, decided to sink No. 7 shaft. This is a six-compartment frame-set shaft (see Fig. 2) equipped with two cages and two 5-ton skips, the remaining compartments being utilised for electric cables, pipes, and ladders. The surface arrangements will include a steel head frame, electric winders, and breaker station.
