Massive sulphide mineralisation at the Miriam prospect, near Coolgardie, Western Australia, is fracture-controlled and associated with disseminated sulphides near the basal contact of an ultramafic lens. The lens is peridotitic in composition with a pyroxenitic zone at its base, and lies within a sequence of altered high-Mg basalts and pillowed tholeiitic basalts. Recrystallisation of the ultramafic rock has resulted in the development of secondary olivine. The average composition of the sulphide fraction of massive ore is Cu = 4.4%, Co = 0.3%, Ni = 23.0%, Fe = 31.8%, S = 40.6%, consisting of the supergene assemblage violarite-pyrite to a depth of 210 m.

Sampling of grain for mycotoxins is challenging in that some mycotoxins, such as Ochratoxin A (OTA), have very low permitted levels and the kernels carrying the mycotoxin may be highly localised within the bulk of the grain as ‘hot spots’. Sampling for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be fraught with similar problems, especially if the contamination is adventitious and random. Incremental sampling under these circumstances can be shown to lead to a high variance in the sampling result.A new design of sampler for grain and other free-flowing particulates has been developed that is effective in practically eliminating the sampling variance due to distributional heterogeneity (DH).This paper introduces the design and argues that the sampler should be free of sampling variance due to DH.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. Oversize rock breaking and metal tramp removal are key issues for reducing primary crusher downtime, as well as improving the safety associated with its operation. Remote operation of such tasks would thus not only increase productivity, but also reduce the risks related to work in confined spaces, fall risks, and overhead hazards. These issues are particularly relevant in high-capacity operations such as iron ore mining, where large machines are in continuous operation. This article describes the architecture, construction and advanced testing of a novel remotely operated robotic mechanism for assessment and removal of metal tramp from primary crusher chambers. The system essentially includes a robotic-arm equipped with a hydraulic clamp tool for handling oversize material, as well as an oxy-flame module for cutting metal pieces entrapped within the primary crusher cavity. The first industrial unit was delivered to a large iron ore mine in Brazil, where the installation and testing is scheduled within the coming months.

Process industry measurement systems, once installed, are often interpreted as static black boxes delivering correct values as long as not proven otherwise. After first implementation and set-up with a distinct sampling frequency, they often run ‘forever’ without checking if this frequency is still appropriate with respect to changed raw materials characteristics, different process conditions or changed customer specifications. Failure detection is based on operator experience and skills (often close to an art form) and/or from control measurements of reference samples. This may well be too late for many industrial process contexts. An appropriate sampling frequency is a critical success factor for valid monitoring and control.Based on the methodology of variographic analysis we here illustrate how to design/re-design/optimise an industrial measurement system in terms of sampling frequency, discretisation and accuracy based on customer specifications. We also show how variographics can be used to monitor for deviations. We use experience from process industry to show how these methods can be used not only for product characterisation, but also for monitoring input factors, process indicators and measurement of these. The information hidden in the vast amounts of data that is continuously created in modern process industries can be utilised to cut costs in the measurement activities and at the same time contribute to early error detection. We illustrate by case examples from production processes at a nickel refinery, supporting the Lean and Six Sigma methodology. This will provide a standard operating procedure for monitoring the stability of measurement systems, and provide a basis with which to discuss how a variographic approach can be integrated with the Lean and Six Sigma approach as an online tool to map, characterise and validate measurement systems and thus avoid more cumbersome measurement system analysis in full detail.CITATION:Thisted, E, Thisted, U, Bøckman, O and Esbensen, K H, 2017. Movements in the mineral trade cycle are almost invariably out of phase with the gradua- tion rate of mining engineers, metallurgists and geologists. This commonly leads to situations where graduates are scarce in "boom" periods and in free supply when the trade cycle is depressed. This problem reflects the difference in elasticity and flexibility between the educational and industrial environments. In the educational system the decision that brings students to graduation is made three to five years prior to the event. This is quite a lengthy period of time in terms of mineral trade cycles. By contrast, the mineral industry has far more elasticity in responding to short term fluctuations in mineral trade. The authors do not believe that the mis- match between the availability of skilled personnel and the manpower requirements of industry in the short term is intractable. Much is to be gained by more realistic and rational manpower forecasting combined with greater flexibility in the educational realm.

The main techniques for removing phosphorus as an impurity element in iron ores are physical separation (eg magnetic separation, flotation) and chemical separation (acid leaching, alkaline leaching and bioleaching) processes. When phosphorus occurs in iron ores as phosphate minerals (eg apatite), physical separation techniques are available to remove the gangue minerals from iron ores. On the other hand, chemical separation techniques are suitable for reducing phosphorus levels when phosphorus is associated with iron oxides and hydroxide minerals (eg hematite and goethite) in iron ores. In this study, the dephosphorisation behaviour of high‐phosphorus iron ore was investigated using a combined alkaline roasting and water washing route. Roasting experiments were conducted in a laboratory electric muffle furnace using various concentrations of sodium hydroxide (0–50 g/kg-ore) at different temperatures (100–800°C), varying prolonged roasting times (0–2 h), and different particle size fractions (-45 – -250 μm) of iron ore. Subsequent water washing experiments were employed at various pulp densities (30–1000 g/L) and different times (30 s – 60 min) at ambient temperature. Hematite and goethite were the main minerals in the high-phosphorus iron ore identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The iron ore assaying 63.40 mass % Fe (total), 0.240 mass % P, 4.53 mass % SiO2, and 4.87 mass % Al2O3 were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The results showed that the dephosphorisation rate of the iron ore was reached 40 per cent under roasting with 50 g/kg-ore NaOH at 300°C for 2 hours followed by water washing for 30 s with a pulp density of 300 g/L, reducing phosphorus level from 0.240 mass % to 0.142 mass %. At the same time, the iron grade was reduced from 63.4 per cent to 59.5 per cent, caused by an iron loss. Results suggest that the phase transformation of goethite induces the dephosphorisation of high-phosphorus iron ore under alkaline roasting conditions

Adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits have well-documented alteration mineral zonation patterns with distinctive geochemical signatures. Proper use of whole-rock geochemistry can provide useful vectors for exploration and can enhance efforts to characterise and quantify the mineralogy and intensity of hydrothermal alteration.   Analyses of Au and Ag provide the most direct vectors to orebodies, and pathfinder elements such as As, Sb, Hg, Zn, Pb and Se are similarly zoned around at least some orebodies. However, the minerals that contain these elements occur almost exclusively in veins, and therefore identifying geochemical vectors related to wallrock alteration that is zoned outward from orebodies is crucial for effective exploration.   Distal alteration zones contain quartz-illite-chlorite-carbonate-pyrite, whereas samples proximal to veins contain quartz-adularia-pyrite, with lesser though variable illite-chlorite-carbonate. Therefore, adularia-sericite epithermal ore deposits show K alteration in their cores. The resulting K-metasomatism can be evaluated in several ways. Areas that have been most intensely altered are commonly characterised by highest K contents, but these results can be complicated by variations in rock type across the prospective area. Potassium mass balance results provide a robust and rigorous assessment of K-metasomatism, however, knowledge about the composition of fresh rocks and correct identification of fresh precursor compositions of altered rocks are required. Three alteration indices provide effective evaluation of K-metasomatism: 1.   the K number, which is the ratio K/(2Ca+K+Na) (molar); 2.   Barrie values [(K2O * 100) / Sr]; and 3.   the Rb/Sr ratio. In most places these provide similar vectors, although K numbers can be complicated by the appearance of hydrothermal calcite and/or albite.   Plots of K/Al vs (2 Ca + K + Na)/Al (molar) allow estimation of the intensity of K-metasomatism and its mineralogical products, thereby complementing traditional XRD and petrographic studies of alteration minerals.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

IN the present paper it is the writer's intention to largely confine the subject-matter to details relating to the metallurgical practice in connection W,ith the blast roasting of lead ores at the Port PiJ;ie works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. rather than to elaborate on mechanical plant details which are more or less standard equipment of the average Dwight and Lloyd or Huntington-Heberlein blast roasting installations (hereinafter referred to in the text as D. & L. and I.I. & H. respectively). The present blast roasting plant is a combination ot D. & L. straight line machines and IQ-ton H. & H. pots. The latter installation was an operating unit prior to the introduction of the D. & L. machines, the pre-roasting then being accomplished in Ropp roasting furnaces.On the introduction of the D. & L. machines the use of the Ropp roasting furnaces as a pre-roasting unit was discontinued, and this step of the process was then carried out on one section of the D. & L. installation.Consequently, then, the present plant consists of (1) A section of D. & L. machines, which operate solely as a pre-roastiIig unit. (2) A section of D. & L. machines which operate to their full capacity as 3, final roasting unit and treat the main portion of the pre-roasted material.

Gold Mining at the Lancefield Mine was commenced initially in 1897 and continued intermittently through to 1956 when rising costs and mine cave-in forced closure. The mine was redeveloped in 1981 and a new-oxide treatment plant commissioned, followed by a new refractory treatment plant in late 1982. Both these treatment plants are located within the Windarra Nickel Project plant area.The refractory ore is processed by fluidised bed roasting of flotation concentrates. This is carried out in two series connected reactors to maximise arsenic and sulphur eliminations and to minimise reagent consumption. For gold recovery the zinc precipitation process was initially used, to be later replaced by carbon-in-pulp.

Roller seed screens were installed at The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (B.H.P.) Whyalla pellet plant to replace vibrating screens on the green ball circuits. The installation of roller screens was justified by improving the sizing of the green balls. This improved sizing increased the yield of fired pellets produced from green balls thus decreasing the fuel consumption. The fired pellet sizing was improved also. This paper discusses the configuration of the roller screens installed at Whyalla, quality of green balls produced, advantages of roller screens compared with vibrating screens and future development of roller Screens.

All types of coal are liable to spontaneous combustion to a variable degree according to the inherent characteristics of the coal and also extrinsic factors. In order to successfully extract coal from highly capital-intensive longwall mining operations it is necessary to evaluate and manage any risks that may be present due to spontaneous combustion. A spontaneous combustion risk management plan for longwall mining is described in this paper. This risk management system comprises identification of conditions promoting spontaneous combustion risk, a laboratory or empirical risk classification system, determination of gas ladder, adoption of adequate ventilation plans and gas monitoring systems that will lead to the development of the spontaneous combustion action plan. The risk management system was applied to a greenfield site in NSW in 1992 when prediction of a high-risk category for the coal seam was made. After commencement of production a spontaneous heating problem emerged as predicted. Description of the case history of spontaneous combustion risk management for a longwall operation in this coal seam is included in this paper.

Grade control aims to deliver quality tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. It comprises data collection and interpretation; local reserve estimation; supervision of development and mining; and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of high quality sampling supported by geology. The requirement for quality grade control samples has long been recognised, where they should be representative, unbiased, safe and operationally timely. Underground sampling methods include chip and channel samples; grab samples; and drill-based samples. To achieve quality samples, collection techniques employed should minimise delimitation, extraction and preparation errors. Grade control staff should be well-trained and motivated, and mining staff should understand the need for grade control. This paper reviews grade control sampling methods and presents recommendations for best practice and minimisation of sampling errors.

The first difficulty encount.ered in preparing this paper was to find a definition of the word "special" as applied to steel. The first thought is "obviously any grade not mild steel" but this is an over-simplification, because the term "mild steel" covers a series of carbon ranges, each found from experience to be especially suited to the production of a particular rolled section.Even if the Australian structural mild steels are excluded it is found that no part of the plant here is independent of special steel.The face-man on Iron Monarch makes his bench safe by barring down with a 0.6% carbon steel bar. He bores a hole into the ironstone with a 0.75-0.8% carbon steel drill, driven by a jackhammer which is built of a variety of special steels. After it is shot down, the stone is lifted by an electric shovel, very few of whose steel components fall into the general category of structural grades of mild steel.Further special steels are met with in the truck into which the stone is loaded, the hauling electric locomotive, and the rails on which these .run. Even the permanent way uses more than one grade, e.g., the crossings experiencing heavy service have their frogs built with austenitic manganese steel inserts.Special steels play their part in the overhead crane which tips these trucks, and in the crushers into which they discharge, and so they can be followed right through the production line, and they are still there at the seaward end of the ship loading boom at the head of the WhyalIa ore jetty.

The structural models developed by exploration and mining geologists are most commonly concerned with the ‘main structures’ or key constituents that pertain to the associated mineralisation. To this end, it is recognised that the geological and exploration models, which are developed, are essentially ‘fit for task’ and the scale-related variances are not always realised at an early stage. In fact, in many cases anomalous intercepts along different trends and of variable apparent continuity have often been neglected as ‘back scatter’ and not important. Recognition of the importance of subordinate structures as mineralising hosts suggests that additional opportunities exist outside the primary and main structures. History shows that opportunities are often not realised where gold is hosted in orientations not parallel to the predominant trend of the schistosity, main fault or shear zone.Another reason for the importance of subordinate structures can be understood from their roles in a percolation network. Subordinate structures can access the large fluid fluxes provided by backbone elements, but, as dangling elements, they provide greater opportunities for gold precipitation mechanisms and hence may constitute essential parts of the resource. Therefore, the role, understanding and consideration of the smaller-scale and orthogonal structures should be considered during all facets of exploration, resource development, delineation and mining.

There is an increasing trend in the extraction and development of copper resources from complex deposits. The complex deposits pose mineral processing challenges, as they often contain low grade copper ore, relatively large quantity of clay minerals, complex texture, very fine disseminated ore, high amount of pyrite, and high level of impurity elements such as arsenic. With the amount of arsenic in concentrates increasing and with environment, occupational health and safety regulations becoming more restrict, there is a need for a processing method that results in no arsenic emissions and captures all arsenic while immobilizing it in a compound that is stable under a wide range of conditions, so it is suitable for long-term disposal. Some development work has been undertaken to examine the most effective arsenic treatment option for complex orebodies that contain arsenic, but a technically robust and economically viable option has not yet been developed. Previous research has demonstrated the possibility of separating arsenic-copper sulphides from other copper minerals by controlling the potential of the flotation pulp in the single mineral systems. The selective flotation of enargite from copper sulphides in a real complex ore system was studied by Tayebi-Khorami (2016), which is summarised in this paper. CITATION: Tayebi-Khorami, M, 2018. This in turn increases the focus on costs.Increasing demands on quality and service puts pressure on delivery performance - the right product at the right time. This in turn reduces the scope for errors and delays - and this in turn increases focus on equipment reliability. In the mining industry, both costs and equipment reliability have one significant thing in common - they are driven substantially by maintenance.

The link between geostatistics and Theory of Sampling (TOS) is examined again in view of new findings made while trying to compare predicted sampling variances and estimated grades (using geostatistics) on the same material, and this provides an important consistency requirement whenever calculations are made that involve both theories in a comparative way. The work reported in this paper extends,-bhsb on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite ;Pellets"., which was described at the- International Symposium on Agglomeration ;-sponsored by the American Institute. of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia; U.S.A. in April, 1961. Whereas- that work was of a.,more basic nature, -serving to illustrate the suitability of artificialòmagnetites with various.admixtures, to the application of heat hardened pellets, on: this occasion the aim-is to illustrate the procedures-which were used-to- establish the dimensions of commercialòrecuperativ strands for Australian raw materials,The nature of the pellet feed, i.e. relatively uniform :spheres of4 3/8 in. - 7/16. in. diameter, makes it possible to use small scale static pots for test work. By the use of a closed system and the measurement of suctions, gas f lows, and temperatures through beds, the speed and heat requirements of the various stages of heat hardening can be measured, so: that for a specified quality of product estimates can be made of the broad design characteristics of a moving grate system. In practice of course it is .usual to correlate the data from this type-of :experimental 'apparatus with . existing production units upon which good operating data, in the statistical sense, are available.
