The N3500 orebody is the northern continuation of the 3500 orebody at Xstrata Copper's Enterprise Mine and occurs at a depth of 1.3 to 1.8 km. At the nearby S3500 orebody, extreme deformation was observed in access drives where there was a high number of bedding planes per metre combined with either graphite or talc infill. The observed failure mechanism was largely controlled by the geometry of the inclined bedding submitted to high horizontal stresses. Due to the anisotropic strength and deformation behaviour of the shale rock mass, traditional isotropic methods of geomechanical property estimation based upon GSI are not appropriate. A numerical modelling approach, based upon the distinct element codes UDEC (2D) and 3DEC (3D), has been developed to accurately simulate the failure mechanisms and deformation observed in the initial infrastructure surrounding the N3500 orebody.

In 1975 the US Bureau of Mines (BOM) under contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), began a systematic mineral resource evaluation of Indian reservations in the United States. The purpose of the BIA/BOM program was to stimulate economic development on Indian lands through exploration and mining ventures with the mining industry. Since that time, 109 phase I reports (literature studies) and nearly 45 phase II and phase III (field studies) reports have been written by the BOM. The various tribes in conjunction with the BIA have access to these reports for decision making regarding mineral resource development.

The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. The site is no longer at the mercy of trommel panel lifespan, which allows for better optimisation of wear components in the circuit. CITATION:Pyke, J D, Katov, K and Ciutina, S T, 2018. The township of Yalloum was established in 1921 to provide accommodation for the work force on the sites of the power station and open cut which were to become the basis of Victoria's electricity industry.A company town, Yallourn flourished, and in its heyday in the 1950s the township had a population in excess of 5500 residents.However the town was sited over a valuable coal field. In the 1960s, studies conducted by the State Electricity Commission indicated that excavation of this coal as a continuing development of Yalloum Open Cut was the optimum choice to meet the growing energy needs of Victoria. Operation in what became known as the Township Field commenced in 1979 and the completion of the overburden stripping was successfully achieved on target in 1991.

The Murrin Murrin deposit is located about 210 km NNE of Kalgoorlie and 50 km E of Leonora in the North Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia at latitude 28¦ 50'S. longitude 121¦ 54'E on the Laverton (SH 51-2) 1:250 000 map sheet. The tenements are held by Anaconda Nickel NL. Geological investigations between 1994 and 1996 resulted in resource calculations being completed for the ten lateritic nickel cobalt deposits shown in Figure 1. At a 0.8 per cent nickel cut-off the resources at May 1996 for the nine deposits are 116.8 Mt at 1.10 per cent nickel and 0.082 per cent cobalt. The nickel-cobalt mineralisation is contained in a laterite profile developed over Archaean serpentinised peridotites. A bankable feasibility study has been completed and the project is scheduled to be in production by the beginning of 1998.

The beneficiation of iron ore deposits to yield haematite and magnetite concentrates for steel making processes typically require the use of one or a combination of wet processing techniques based on gravity, magnetic or froth flotation processes. With the need for more cost-effective technologies with a lower water demand, a re-examination of dry processing techniques has been initiated. For example, a dry processing capability may offer an advantage where suitable quality and quantity of process water hinders the development of a particular resource. This paper describes recent laboratory test work for the production of high grade concentrates using dry electrostatic techniques for -300 ¦m haematite and magnetite ores and compares them with magnetic separation techniques.

The drilling and evaluation of bore cores provides the best available statistical basis for characterizing a coal prospect. Important, long-term decisions by management frequently must be based on the results. The majority of coal mined presently is used for steam raising or the production of metallurgical coke. Common bore core tests and analyses appropriate to this usage can be cate- gorized as non-destructive, chemical, physical, petrographic, caking/plastometric and propert- ies of non-coal material. The major tests within each category are described. Certain specific information from the bore cores is required by the coal geologist, mining engineer, coal preparation engineer and the user, either individually or as a group. The optimal bore core evaluation test pro- gramme is the one which satisfies the needs of all the professional disciplines with the grtatest speed and at minimal cost. The principal steps in such a programme are listed. There is an urgent need for a bold new Australian standard to provide the necessary guidelines to an industry which at present lacks uniformity in its approach to the task.

Results are presented which demonstrate the feasibility of employing electrolytic membrane technology to process leach liquors derived from alkaline pressure leaching of scheelite concentrates and to recover and recyle sodium carbonate. Thus the problem of disposal of sodium sulphate is avoided. In a further application of the technique sodium tungstate is converted to tungstic acid which can be further processed by three possible routes to crystalline or amorphous tungstic acid or tungsten powder. In each route sodium hydroxide is produced which on carbonation can be recycled as soda ash to the pressure leach stage. Further testwork is required to determine long term operational conditions in the membrane cell and to confirm the effect and deportment of impurities on products. The process has been patented.

Pulp rheology plays a critical role in fine mineral flotation. Yield stress and apparent viscosity are two important rheological parameters affecting mineral flotation recovery. In this paper, the concept of pulp rheology and its measuring method are presented. The main factors, such as particle size, pulp concentration, mineral types, pulp temperature, inorganic salts, that affect the pulp rheology are systematically reviewed, and then followed by the discussion of the relationship between pulp rheological properties and flotation performance. Generally, high pulp apparent viscosity and yield stress values have been found to have an adverse effect on flotation recovery. In addition, due to the hetero-coagulation between the valuable mineral and gangue mineral, the pulp of mixed ore shows higher viscosity than that of the single mineral slurry. This paper is expected to provide some references for the efficient upgrading of low-grade and complex ores from the perspective of pulp rheology.

The Huolinhe surface mine is a very large-scale surface coal mine, located in the north-east area of China with a production rate of 1.2 Mtpa. Its coal haulage system has a large capacity, long transportation line and high degree of automation. The system comprises two crushing plants, many belt conveyors, four surge bunkers, one loading bunker, one coal storage and five end product bunkers. In this paper, the network patterns of semi-continuous systems in surface mines are studied, the reliability calculation methods and a simulation model are established and the software for computing the reliability of a semi-continuous system is worked out. By considering the whole coal haulage system in the Huolinhe surface mine, the authors developed the system reliability-numerical simulation method. The steps and the computing results of this method are described in detail. Through the calculation, we can master the present situation of system reliability and the main factors impairing system reliability, expose the system weak links, put forward the ways of enhancing system reliability and furnish the basis for improving the system and equipment. The way of increasing capacity and methods of enhancing system reliability are further raised.

The discovery of economic uranium miner alisation in unique geological conditions at Yeelirrie, 700 km NNE of Perth, presented Western Mining Corporation Limited with a num- ber of sampling and evaluation problems. Carn- otite mineralisation occurred in a porous cal- crete-clay lithology in close proximity to the water table; background information on such a deposit was non-existent and sampling in these conditions could be difficult. The deposit was sampled initially by aug- er drilling with X-ray fluorescence analysis of drill cuttings, followed by reverse circulation and diamond drilling with analyses by X-ray fluorescence and gamma logging of the holes. Two costeans provided lithological and grade distribution data and mining experience in the deposit. Spoil from the costeans was stockpiled according to location in the first costean and according to location and grade in the second costean. Samples from the various stockpiles were analysed by X-ray fluorescence. No. 1 costean was extensively sampled by channel sampling of the walls and by pit sampling of the floor of the benches of the costean by back hoe. No. 2 costean was sampled by Geiger counters mounted in T-probes and by the gamma logging of auger holes to establish the valid- ity of the T-probe results. Samples were taken

Due to record low tin prices and an uncompetitive position in world markets, the Renison tin mine has undergone three major phases of restructuring in the last three years. This has involved substantial job losses, almost all of which have been through voluntary retrenchments. Retrenchments took place in 1988, 1990 and 1991.The last phase of restructuring was the most dramatic, as many aspects of the operation of the mine were changed. New pay structures were introduced, and the miners' contract system was scrapped. Drastic pay cuts occurred in many areas, although the opportunity was also taken to increase pay at some of the lower levels where inequities existed. Work practices were changed, as was the management structure.

This study considers realistic data for a planned open pit iron ore mine, but is applicable to any open pit situation. By interpolating drill hole data, grades are generated for a rectangular block model. Each blockÆs grade designation vector has components for each analyte (chemical element or compound) influencing ore value. Interpolation by means of geostatistical kriging leads to each block being assigned its expected value, and thus underestimates the overall grade variability. Alternatively, interpolation by means of conditional simulation is a method that implements random sampling from an infinite population of solutions. Each conditional simulation has appropriate overall grade variability, but estimating any blockÆs mean and variance requires sampling from multiple conditional simulations. For a block model, an ore/waste selection criterion maximises the expected tonnage at a target grade. This criterion is a linear composite of the grade components, with positive coefficients for the beneficial analyte (iron) and negative coefficients for the deleterious analytes (such as silica, alumina and phosphorus).Although conditional simulation gives the same expected grade as kriging for each block, the expected maximum tonnage of ore selectable at a target grade may differ from that obtainable from the kriged solution. We apply the linear composite selection criterion to each of 25 conditional simulations, as well as to the kriged block model. The resulting distribution of product tonnage is confirmed to have an expected tonnage that is over 20 per cent greater than that of the kriged model. The method also enables a selection probability to be computed for each block, and thus a probabilistic pit boundary distribution to be identified and used in mine planning. Proposed extensions will consider risk-based scheduling of the multiple selection solutions through minimisation of a derived æstress factorÆ and treating the mining process as an iterative system with actual or artificial ædepletionsÆ modelled in line with the mine plan, using the updated state (with new information) to re-evaluate the mine plan for subsequent periods.CITATION:Everett, J E and Grobler, F, 2013. The metallurgical sector significantly contributes to the global carbon footprint and encounters the challenge of developing more sustainable production methods. This study introduces novel approaches aimed at reducing CO2 emissions within the industrial sector, some of which have been developed up to the demonstration scale. In two case studies, urban waste from the agricultural sector (corn, olives, coconut etc) and waste electrical or electronic equipment (WEEE) recycling residues (shredder light fractions (SLF)) were subjected to thermal treatment. The resulting materials were then used as substitutes for conventional fossil-based reducing agents in both the copper and ferroalloy industries. Furthermore, hydrogen was employed at different scales to assess its efficacy as a reducing agent for recovering metal oxides from fayalitic copper slags. Our findings reveal promising prospects and defined specific challenges for the integration of these alternative reducing agents in the industry. The synergistic use of pyrolysed SLF, bio-coke, and hydrogen presents a viable pathway to significantly diminish CO2 emissions while simultaneously improving the sustainability of the metallurgical sector.

Brazilian amethyst production is mostly obtained from underground mines in the southernmost part of the country, involving approximately 6000 miners and generating an income of US$ 20 million per year. Amethyst-bearing geodes are hosted by Cretaceous continental flood basalts of the Serra Geral Formation. The economic zone occurs in the massive (colonnade) intermediary section of the Sao Gabriel Basalto. The tunnels and stopes follow the occurrence of geodes leading to an erratic and complex layout. A ground control survey revealed excessive roof convergence. Topographic results show excessive roof deformation and some roof falls have already been reported. To understand the ground conditions, prevent roof falls and better define the pillar dimensions detailed geomechanical mapping was carried out using the scanline method. Uniaxial compressive strength tests provided complementary information for rock mass classification. Results of the geomechanical classification were used to modify the mining layout taking into account the roof and pillar geomechanical characteristics. Retreat pillar mining minimised ground instability.

The oxidation of sphalerite particles of 60 to 100 mesh size was studied in a fluidized bed of low 02 concentration at 900¦C. Par- tial pressure of 02 in the fluidizing 02-N2 gas mixture was chosen between 0.0009 and 0.02 atm. In the region of p02 between 0.008 and 0.02 atm, the oxidation rate was lowered with the decrease of p02, and the unreacted-core model was applied. At lower pbelow 0.008 atm, the reaction rate was enhanced as compared with the calcu- lated values from the unreacted-core model. From microscopic examination, it was found that ZnS was evaporated at the particle surface and the dissociated Zn vapor was oxidized in the gas phase. Initial reaction rate and the distance between the surface of inner sphaler- ite core and the oxide shell were studied based on the model of enhanced oxidation.

The spatial variability of geometallurgical characteristics in a mineral deposit can have significant impact on financial and mine planning, mineral processing, concentrate quality and tailings composition throughout the life of a project. These characteristics that may determine the success of a project are not readily apparent to geologists unless they are integrated with deposit geology and assay data, modelled in 3D and incorporated into resource block models.One of the primary objectives of geometallurgy is to integrate and incorporate various geologic, geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters into resource block models, which typically are limited to in situ tonnes and grade of economic metals. Critical attributes, such as concentration of deleterious elements that affect the project viability need to be identified and integrated into the resource block model early in the exploration stage to predict project profitability and address potential environmental impacts.Using data from a volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit we present an example of the integration of ore geochemistry (cadmium, arsenic and antimony) with the results of preliminary, bench-scale metallurgical test work in a 3D geometallurgical model that predicts subdomains of poor-quality concentrate and tailings containing environmentally-sensitive elements. This critical information was incorporated into the existing resource block model in order to inform both financial modelling and mine planning.This example demonstrates that geometallurgical data can be effectively integrated with geological and assay data using Leapfrog MiningTM software (Leapfrog Mining) early in the exploration stage of a project. Three-dimensional representations of geometallurgical data can be created directly using primary additive data, as well as from proxies of non-additive parameters. Resource block models can be updated continually with new information as the project passes from exploration through production. In addition, the software allows for 3D visualisation of the characteristics of the materials that will eventually constitute the mill concentrate, tailings, and waste. This study emphasises the critical importance of establishing a systematic geometallurgical approach early in the exploration stage that can be continuously updated with new information throughout the life of the project. In the example that we present, sulfide ore that had otherwise been identified as high-value (in the absence of geochemical and metallurgical data) turns out to be low-value ore due to concentrate penalties and increased environmental impact.

A research project to better understand the rock mass behaviour and the seismic response has been conducted during the design and construction of the 9215 level at the E-Block sector of the Northern Star Kanowna Belle Mine. The research program was undertaken at a tunnel located 1100 m below the surface with the results applicable to feasibility studies on underground mining projects in highstress conditions, where failure can occur very soon after tunnel construction. Semi-circular excavation shapes coupled with the use of de-stress blasting techniques were designed to monitor the excavation in conditions of very high stress. The ground support was designed considering high energy dissipation ground support schemes (HED) as described by Arcaro et al (2021). The results indicate a decreased rock mass demand due to the change of excavation shape. Also, localised reduction in rock mass stiffness was achieved due to the implementation of de-stress blasting. Finally, increased ground support capacity was gained by the implementation of the high energy dissipation ground support schemes. The Kanowna Belle Mine has significant ore reserves at depths exceeding 1000 m below the surface. The results of this research will be used to optimise the extraction of the remaining E Stoping Block at depths exceeding 1350 m.
