A generalised mathematical model for hydrocyclone classifiers was developed by the author (Nageswararao, 1978) using dimensionless groups which include phenomenological characteristics as independent variables. This model is incorporated in JKSimMet, the steady state mineral processing simulator developed by JKTech.Recently, when this model was rewritten (Lynch and Morrell, 1992), in terms of variables other than those used by the author, a few errors have crept in. For example, while the exponent of (Du/Dc) in the equation for d50e should be negative (-0.47), it was recorded as positive (0.47). Also, the exponent of (DoIDe) in the equation for pressure drop should be 0.67 and not 0.60. In the same equation, the exponent of Dc would turn out to be -0.10 and not 0.15. These are clearly attributable to typographic and rounding off errors, while transforming the original equations.More recently, Cilliers (pers comm) has done a comprehensive evaluation of the major semi-empirical models for hydrocyclones.He observed that the major difference between the cyclone model developed by the author and other models lies in the method of quantifying the effect of spigot diameter on d50e. He noted that while all other models predict an increase in d50e with a decrease in the spigot diameter, the model as cited by Lynch and Morrell (1992) predicts just the opposite. However, he conjectured correctly that the discrepancy could be due to a typographic error. As the model is still unpublished, it is felt that the original model equations should be recorded with the correct exponents, so that errors in predictions other than those due to the limitations of the model itself could be avoided. Tower Mills are used at Aberfoyle's newly commissioned Hellyer base metal sulphide concentrator. Hellyer ore is particularly fine grained. To achieve adequate liberation fine grinding is necessary. Three Tower Mills are used on regrind duties, grinding to less than 20 microns. The physical arrangement, material flows and grinding characteristics for the Hellyer Tower Mills are described. The mills have performed satisfactorily, both in size reduction and power efficiency. Wear parts must be inspected and changed more often than with ball Mills. To date, 92 per cent availability has been achieved. As parts and maintenance routines are rationalised, this is expected to improve to 96 per cent. Modifications to wear parts for the Hellyer Tower Mills are discussed.lhc Tower Mill grinding environment is highly reducing. The impact of Tower Mill regrind on downstream flotation is discussed.

The application of photogeological techniques and analysis of more advanced remote sensor images can be a cost and time effective tool in the search for desert placer gold deposits. Examples are given of regional analysis using standard false color composit Landsat images and conventional black and white aerial photography. The examples include identification of sites to sample to evaluate the pathways of .alluvial gold migration and identification of potential sites of concentration. The results of these studies developed an increased number of target areas and exploration in proceeding with promising results. In addition to the development of additional target concepts and identification of specific target areas data useful to evaluation of mineability can also be obtained from photogeological investigation. Some indication at least can be obtained of the existence of duricrusts and salines that may hamper mining. Identification of possible sources of water is another important task in the desert environment. In addition indications of the clay content of the material to be worked is very important because of its economic impact on operational costs and overall recovery. The application of photogeology to these questions is discussed.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) was initiated in 1995 by federal agencies, the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) to identify, evaluate and develop cost-effective and practical acid drainage technologies. In 1999, ADTI was expanded through the addition of the metal mining sector, which is focused on drainage quality issues related to metal mines. ADTI addresses drainage quality issues from abandoned, active, and future coal and metal mines. The guiding principle of ADTI is to build consensus among industry, federal and state regulatory agencies on acid drainage technology development and technology transfer issues. ADTI is focusing its efforts on mine drainage prediction, sampling/monitoring, modelling and avoidance/remediation. ADTI is not a regulatory or policy development program. ADTI includes the Coal Mining Sector (CMS) and the Metal Mining Sector (MMS) under the overall guidance of the ADTI Operations Committee. The Operations Committee consists of representatives from industry, state and federal government and academia. The Coal Mining Sector includes two committees; a prediction committee and an avoidance and remediation committee. The Metal Mining Sector includes steering committee and work groups on prediction, sampling and monitoring, modelling, mitigation, and pit lakes. The Coal Mining Sector has produced two publications on the prediction and prevention of acid drainage. The Metal Mining Sector has workbooks under preparation covering the work group topics. This past winter, the Metal Mining Sector, working with the US Bureau of Land Management, presented a satellite training session on acid drainage. ADTI has evolved in response to changing needs and technologies as evidenced by the addition of the Metal Mining Sector in 1999. The Operations Committee and the members of the Coal and Metal Mining Sectors will guide future direction in response to identified issues.

In the search for significant new economic base-metal resources within Australia during the early 1970s BHP's Exploration Department had observed that the majority of lead and zinc con- centrate production in Europe and the USA came from carbonate- hosted Mississippi-Valley-type (MVT) zinc-lead deposits, but Aus- tralia had no history of production from this class of deposit despite several very favourable geological environments, par- ticularly in the large Palaeozoic sedimentary basins. An exploration-research team was established in 1975 and the Lennard Shelf region, near Fitzroy Crossing, was selected as a most promising geological environment. Previous exploration for this class of deposit by other companies in Australia had largely used conventional exploration philosophies (geological mapping, geophysics and geochemistry to identify specific drill targets) but BHP sought specialist advice from a North American expert and adopted a grid-drilling philosophy, which involved wide spaced relatively deep diamond drill holes on a regular grid pattern, and statistical evaluation of the results. This technique resulted in the discovery of the Blendevale Deposit in 1978 in an area which had previously been explored by other companies using conventional methodologies. The deposit was delineated and a pre-feasibility study carried out in 1985 indicated that the resource of 20 Mt @ 8.3% Zn, 2.5% Pb was a marginal proposition.

With the depletion of high-quality ores, the efficiency of extracting difficult gold ores through flotation and leaching becomes very important in the mining industry. Iron contaminants, sulfide and carbonaceous coatings on the surface of gold and gold bearing minerals significantly hinder the recovery of gold during gold processing. As the surface of gold minerals is easily contaminated, coatings of iron oxides and iron hydroxides originated from the grinding process and oxidation of iron sulfides will cause a retarding effect on both gold flotation and leaching.To mitigate the processing issues caused by undesirable surface coatings on gold minerals, a new technology in treating surface coatings of iron contaminants has been developed. The pulp potential and pH of the slurry are altered to allow dissolution of surface coatings which are further excluded by the use of complexing reagents. The current work shows that iron contaminants can be removed from the surfaces of gold through Eh-pH adjustment and chelation which result in significantly improved gold flotation response. The addition of complexants aids the formation of iron chelates to prevent the iron species in the solution from forming iron oxide and iron hydroxide in the flotation conditions.CITATION:Wei, R and Peng, Y, 2014. Over the past 75 years, the mining of platinum has predominantly focused on the Merensky Reef horizon in the western Bushveld region of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) of South Africa (Figure 1). The orebody is relatively flat dipping at 10¦ to 25¦, narrow tabular in shape and has been mined to a maximum depth of some 1600 m within Anglo Platinum. This has resulted in the installation of up to four generations of shaft systems as mining progressed into reserves at greater depth. In recent years, with the improvement in processing technology and improved economics, in particular with the improved price of palladium, the mining of the UG2 Chromitite Reef is proving economically viable. The UG2 Chromitite Reef occurs below the Merensky Reef in the succession and the normal separation varies from 15 m to 400 m, with the largest separation between the reefs occurring in the eastern region of the BIC. The UG2 Chromitite Reef horizon is now being accessed from existing Merensky mining infrastructure by cross-cutting back through the stratigraphy where appropriate, or by establishing new decline cluster systems from surface, along the extensive strike length of the various mining properties. These declines are generally established utilising mechanised mining techniques. This paper gives an overview of the techno-economic approaches considered and evaluated for the selection of the optimum mining and shaft systems. More specifically, the paper reviews the design parameters used, techno-economics, conveyor versus haul alternatives, logistics simulations, capital costs, system performance, time to market or ramp-up success, important system differences and lessons learnt.

Technological advances the sensor design and performance for logging while drilling (LWD) instrumentation offer considerable opportunities in iron ore exploration. Here we focus on the development of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) LWD tool. NMR is an advanced geotechnical logging technology capable of providing in situ measurements of the porosity, pore size and permeability of the formation of interest. The ability to provide real-time characterisation of iron-ore systems is beneficial to both drilling operations as well as real-time formation evaluation. The development of an NMR LWD tool for mineral exploration drilling has previously not been achieved due to the significant technical and environmental challenges associated with the design and operation of such a tool. The tool outlined in this work is designed to work in reverse-circulation (RC) drilling systems. As such, the tool needs to be compatible with the RC drill-string, as well as being highly robust to survive the shocks and vibrations experienced during RC drilling operations. The magnetic physics of the probe must be capable of measuring at the appropriate depth into formation whilst being subject to the array of motions experienced during drilling operations. Furthermore, conducting accurate NMR measurements in an iron ore formation is challenging and the measurement methodology must be tailored to characterise the magnetic environment. The tool also requires high-powered electronics capable of operating the necessary pulse sequences for excitation and acquisition. The resultant tool design must therefore optimise the inherent trade-offs which exist between the physical components (ie mechanical structure, magnetic components and electronic hardware) in order to operate appropriately whilst not hindering RC drilling operations. Current experimental analysis of the prototype indicates that the current probe design exhibits the required measurement specifications and is nearing field testing. Future work will look towards commercialisation of the instrument.

Kalgoorlie Consolidation Gold Mines (KCGM) operates the Kalgoorlie Super Pit open cut, Mt Charlotte underground mine, Fimiston process plant and Gidji Roaster facility for joint venture partners Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Gold. In 2004, the Fimiston plant was upgraded by the addition of gravity concentration to the Fimiston and Mt Charlotte grinding circuits, including the installation of a central intensive cyanidation reactor to process the gravity concentrates. The gravity project was justified after detailed analysis demonstrating an expected increase in overall gold recovery of approximately one per cent, in addition to reduced elution costs and reduced gold inventory in flotation concentrate stockpiles. The gravity circuits were commissioned in August 2004, and have since consistently recovered 10 to 20 per cent of the gold present in the KCGM ore, delivering a reduction in coarse gold losses equivalent to 0.45 per cent additional metal recovery and contributing to improved metal accountability.CITATION:Giblett, A, Hillier, D, Parker, K and Ramsell, V, 2012. In late 2004 a large-scale evaluation of a new suite of tools for semi-automated core logging was carried out in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Known as HyLoggingÖ Systems, these combine rapid hyperspectral mapping of mineralogy and very high resolution digital imaging of cores and chips in their original containers. The resulting data is very information-rich and provides information about host rock, alteration and regolith mineralogy. This, in turn, can be used to test geological models about fluid/rock interactions, ore system architecture, ore feed characterisation and generally improve the objectivity of the normally manual and variable logging process. Results were obtained from the Kanowna Belle and St Ives gold deposits in the Kalgoorlie region, as well as numerous holes from across Western Australia stored in the Kalgoorlie Core Library. At the Kanowna Belle gold deposit critical spatial trends in the proportions of white mica, the chemistry and species of those micas, the presence of selected carbonate species and the absence of chlorite proximal to ore zones have all contributed to improved ore deposit understanding. Significantly many of these trends are not discernible to the naked eye, nor easily quantified, previously, across many thousands of metres of core from separate drill holes. At St Ives, the HyLoggerÖ was able to show that low-Al (phengite) and high-Al (paragonite to muscovite) white micas are spatially associated with D3 foliation zones that are proximal and distal to Au mineralisation, respectively. D3 foliation zones are also associated with the depletion of metamorphic chlorite and amphibole, and their replacement with biotite, relative to unaltered mafic host-rocks. The HyLogged GSWA drill holes yielded mineralogical characterisation of classic deposits, including Kambalda (Ni), Fimiston (Au), Teutonic Bore (Cu, Zn, Ag), Black Swan (Ni) and Hannans (Au), illustrating a wide variety of mineralogical trends due to both host lithologies, previously unrecorded lithological subdivisions, and alteration patterns. During 2005 a unique thermal infrared HyLogger was developed to map the important remaining silicates, such as feldspars, quartz, olivines, pyroxenes and garnets. This was successfully tested on a 9000 m subset of the same cores as the earlier study. Interpretation has focused, in particular, on silicification, albitisation, and the mineralogy of several high-grade, less hydrous deposits.

Since 2019, the mine planning team at Olympic Dam has been establishing and maturing a shift from deterministic to probabilistic scheduling techniques. This paper outlines this journey undertaken by the mine planning team, key learnings from implementation and further work required to increase the level of planning maturity. Olympic Dam (OD) is a highly variable, polymetallic orebody with a vertically integrated value chain from operations to final product. The processing plant has a tight set of quality constraints which are managed through timing of stopes from varying parts of the orebody. Value is eroded for the operation when forecasted quality of the mine feed encounters disruptions from unplanned changes to the timing of stope starts. As production has moved from the historic Northern Mining Area into the more geologically complex Southern Mining Area, average stope size has reduced, resulting in increased mining fronts required to meet production targets. This has created a problem of increased schedule complexity and difficulties in identifying and communicating resource priorities within a large set of individual stope critical paths. The problem was approached by considering each stope as an individual project constructed by teams working across multiple projects at any one time. The operation could then be considered a multi-project environment with shared resources and enables the application of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) to the mine plan. Key to CCPM is the addition of time buffers to protect the critical path of a project form upstream or downstream processes. Implementation of time buffers protects the stope start date against compliance to plan variance. The monitoring of each time buffer consumption, as a proportion of total construction activities completed enables proactive prioritisation of resources. This resulted in an increase in the number of stopes starting in accordance with the mine plan, simplified communication of priorities to all levels of the operation, increased compliance to plan and a clear measure of schedule risk during planning routines.

Separation of fine and coarse particles as separate streams prior to flotation, and their differential treatments, could substantially increase recovery and reduce collector consumption. A series of simulations was carried out to quantify the benefits from plant scale implementation of such a treatment at the Ispat Inland flotation circuit (Minorca mine). The study involved detailed plant sampling and sample analysis to generate the data needed for simulation studies. Samples were taken from all the streams from flotation feed to final concentrate, as well as cell lips and cell pulp. Sampling was repeated for the second ore blend that was processed by the plant during different periods of a year. Sample analysis involved sieve analysis and size by size chemical analysis for total iron, magnetic iron and silica. Raw data were mass balanced, and flow rates within the circuit were calculated. Mass balanced data were used to calculate model parameters representing the existing conditions. Usim Pac was used for both mass balancing and simulation studies. Available pilot and bench scale data were utilised to define the modified flow sheet and expected performance. The simulated flow sheet included classification of flotation circuit feed by hydrocyclones. While the coarse fraction followed the existing flow sheet, the fine fraction was sent to a magnetic separator. Magnetic and rougher flotation concentrates were combined to form the final concentrate. Two simulations for each blend were carried out. The first one assumed that there would be no change in size by size kinetic behaviours of both gangue and magnetite due to this modification. This was named as the worst case scenario, in which particles had a longer residence time due to reduced flow rates within the flotation cells. The second scenario anticipated that there would be an increase in recoveries of gangue and magnetite going into froth launder due to more efficient use of collector in absence of fines. Results showed that pre-classification of flotation feed could improve the flotation recovery by 0.3 - 0.5 per cent, with the major benefit being significant reduction (40 - 60 per cent) in the amount of collector used.

The earth is a planet limited in size and limited in total resources. For the forseeable future, it is the only available habitat for mankind. Therefore, it follows that the more we know about our planet the better we can utilize its space and its resources for our well-being now and in the future. But, to accomplish this, we need reliable basic information. Geosciences provide such information. Recently, Dr. M. King Hubbert took note of the important effect of the geosciences on society, on how we think, and how we live. In the first century of modern geology, 1780- 1880, the influence of geology was primarily on how we think, i.e. changing our concept of the earth from one with a short catastrophic history to one that developed gradually over enormous spans of time. In the second century, 1880-1980, the emphasis was on how we live, on expanding the knowledge base so that we could more easily find and utilize the earth's resources. Now, in the third century, i.e. from 1980 towards the year 2000 and beyond, we should concentrate on both how we think and how we live; i.e. how we can better estimate potential global' resources and how we can manage these resources for maximum benefit to mankind. Like other sciences, the geosciences build upon what has already been done. Progress is achieved by using the thoughts, measurements, and observations of past workers, adding to these the insights from new experiments and from new concepts. Geology has its own methodology and approaches; but more than most sciences, it calls also upon the tools of physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and biology to help solve its problems. Today's increasing population, increasing industrialization, and increasing complexity of modern society demand more detailed geoscience information so as to better use the land, reduce geological hazards, provide an inventory of resources, facilitate waste disposal, and prepare for long-term effects such as changes in climate and sea level.

High ambient temperatures combined with high surface humidity in the north of Australia and, in particular, the northern areas of the Northern Territory can make underground workplaces relatively inhospitable at certain times of the year. . Woodcutters' silver/lead/zinc mine, situated some 80 km south of Darwin, would be the most northerly underground operation of any significance in Australia. As such, during the build up to the wet season, it has a particular problem of ventilating a deep underground mine with already high dry and wet bulb temperatures at the surface. The Mine Management Act and Regulations mention only that workplaces shall be 'in a fit state for a person to work in or occupy'. Woodcutters therefore set in progress a Heat Stress Program to endeavour to set standards which would be more measurable and justifiable. The aim of the program was to compile a record of ambient atmospheric conditions in the working areas such that areas and/or work activities generating high ambient temperatures and humidities could be identified, quantified and qualified. Once the analysis stage of this program was completed, Woodcutters compiled a set of recommendations for the continued monitoring for, and control of, heat stress conditions to ensure that no underground employee was placed at risk from 'heat stress'. These recommendations are discussed in this paper.

Design and construction techniques used to develop two highway tunnels in inaccessible mountainous terrain are described. Measures used to adapt the design to the unusual geology and topography are discussed, as well as measures to adapt the construction methods to available equipment, materials, and skills. Sharp local variations in geoloqic conditions resulted in field modifications to both design and construction techniques. The geology is a volcanic ash and breccia-agglomerate at one site, a jointed andesite at the other, which is also the site of a major landslide. Both rock reinforcement in the form of pretensioned and grouted rock bolts with a shotcrete lining,and rock support by struc- tural steel sets with a reinforced concrete lining were used. A canyonside location and high lateral in-situ stresses required modification of design procedures. Pilot tunnels at both sites resulted in adapting the designs to site conditions with large savings in lining costs, disclosing problem areas in advance of the main excavation, and cushioning of blasting pressure to minimize stability problems.

The Junction Reefs gold bearing deposit is situated on the Lyndhurst Mining Field in mid-west New South Wales. It is located within a triangle of three country towns namely, Blayney, Cowra and Canowindra, all three townships are approximately 25 km from the current operational mining leases. The district is well developed, having been settled for more than a cen- tury. However, being close to the Cities of Orange and Bathurst it is real- lised, instantly, that mining leases have been pegged, in this area, almost boundary to boundary. The lease patterns are, with few exceptions, those which had been estab- lished more than seventy-five years ago. These types of lease patterns may not assist the proper exploitation of a large district where there have been many discoveries of gold, copper and other metals.

Callide Coalfields produces a sub-bituminous, very subhydrous, low rank, steaming coal with good combustion properties, primarily for domestic power generation. Geological input into planning of coal extraction requires expedient production of detailed structural, lithological, analytical, geophysical and geotechnical data. The CSIRO-developed SIROLOG borehole logging software and hardware system allows for detailed spectrometric analysis of coal/interburden. The gamma-gamma and neutron-gamma SIROLOG techniques both provide improved prediction of ash content over other borehole techniques. The neutron-gamma technique also predicts density and some important ash constituents (especially iron, alumina and silica). The software/hardware configuration allows for quick, easy interpretation of coal seam depth and lithology, parting thickness and ash/ash constituent contents immediately after a borehole has been logged. Within certain mine areas in the Callide Basin, the iron content of mined coal is widely variable in both vertical and lateral extent within and between seams. This variability creates problems in predicting the slagging behaviour of æas-receivedÆ coal during combustion, especially where the iron content of the ash exceeds 19 per cent. Using the SIROLOG tool in co-operation with traditional borehole sample laboratory analysis results, patterns in this variability can be determined and related to geological properties and process of formation of the coal seams. Subsequently, areas of high iron can be predicted in advance of mining. Since 1992, on-going collection and interpretation of SIROLOG downhole geophysical log data has significantly contributed to a number of research projects related to gaining a preliminary understanding of the iron distribution and formation during the Coal MeasuresÆ deposition. Because the probe was able to record variations in coal mineral matter content, it was found to complement more conventional techniques such as reflected light petrography, X-Ray Diffraction and SEM techniques that examine the mineralogy of iron species. Additionally, software has been developed to allow integration of SIROLOG data into existing geology databases, enhancing coal quality modelling and daily prediction of parameters such as raw ash, silica and iron contents that are indicators of ash fusion propensity. The correlation of SIROLOG-derived iron geophysical traces between drillholes and other sample points highlighted lithological and structural controls in the iron distribution in the sequence previously not detected. This work has allowed the development of a methodology for predicting iron in advance of mining and reconciling as-sold coal quality to that predicted. Predictions are currently being assessed at the coal face as mining progresses through high-iron zones.

Following residentsÆ concerns that the ongoing operations of Collinsville Coal (CCP) mine may be resulting in the release of contaminants, including products of acid mine drainage (AMD), into downstream environments, the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency (QEPA) issued CCP with a Notice to Conduct or Commission an Environmental Evaluation at Three Mile Creek. A key objective of the Environmental Evaluation was to assess the extent and magnitude of impacts to aquatic communities and their habitats. A multidisciplinary investigation examined a suite of physical, chemical and biological indicators to meet this objective. The study also aimed to identify contaminants of concern and the location of potential pollutant sources. Potential indicators of AMD, including elevated dissolved solids concentrations and low pH, were evident within the mine lease. However, significant differences in concentration of these indicators upstream and downstream of the confluence with Three Mile Creek were not observed. Although only proxy indicators of AMD contamination, these results suggest that the extent of impacts downstream is minimal. For the purpose of this study, physio-chemical indicators were selected on the basis of those best likely to provide an understanding of the likelihood of contamination, within the constraints of readily available long-term monitoring data. Ecosystem health indicators were adopted to supplement the existing data set and provide a more æroundedÆ perspective of water quality attributes within the system, generally unattainable by standard physio-chemical assessments. In contrast to AMD products, sediments were considered more likely to have a widespread impact on aquatic ecosystems. Waterways throughout the study region, including those unaffected by mining, have been affected by broad-scale sedimentation and were typically highly turbid. Due to the many diffuse sources of sediment potentially liberated within the catchment, the contribution of the mine compared to other land uses on total sediment loads entering streams is difficult to determine. This is clearly a major management issue for mines throughout the Bowen Basin. Streams of the central Queensland region display enormous variability in water flows and physio-chemical characteristics over a range of spatial and temporal scales. This variability presents major difficulties in distinguishing anthropogenic impacts from natural variability (noise). Despite this variability, impact monitoring by mines in the central Queensland district has tended to focus almost entirely upon physio-chemical indicators. The results of the present study indicate that a multiple indicator approach to environmental assessment is more useful for separating mine related impacts from natural ænoiseÆ and impacts from other land uses. In the absence of such information, by adopting the precautionary principle of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), there is potential for an environmental impact to be incorrectly attributed to mining when other activities in the catchment may be contributing to changes in stream æhealthÆ.

Geotechnical models developed during the open pit mine planning stage are generally three-dimensional (3D) in component to capture the spatial variation in geological, structural, hydrogeological and geomechanical conditions. Yet when geotechnical analysis is completed, often the 3D geological, hydrogeological and structural models are simplified to two-dimensions (2D). This paper demonstrates this simplification, through referenced case studies, can lead to the wrong failure mechanism being analysed and/or a conservative Factor of Safety (FOS), or Strength Reduction Factor (SRF), being calculated, leading to a false sense of stability. There exists a paradigm that the FOS calculated using 2D limit equilibrium (LE), or the Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) calculated using 2D finite element (FE), modelling methods is generally conservative, ie lower, than the true FOS. However, this assumption that 3D FOS, or 3D SRF, is always higher than 2D FOS, or 2D SRF, is not always correct (Chen and Chameau, 1983; Bromhead and Martin, 2004; Herza et al, 2017; Pyke, 2017; Dana et al, 2018).
