Complex ores, characterised by intimate intergrowths between minerals, have previously been treated by flotation with limited success. The most common problem has been that the liberation size is often finer than the lower size limit for selection flotation. A technique has been developed in which the problem is overcome by the use of a selective agglomeration procedure in which the values are coalesced with oil to a size suitable for flotation prior to introduction into the flotation machine. A complex lead ore was characterised by QEM*SEM mineralogy as having a mean galena liberation size of 15 ¦m. The best recovery of lead at 50 per cent Pb grade by standard flotation was 53 per cent. After application of the procedure, 86 per cent recovery was obtained after a single cleaner step. The oil functions as a bridging liquid in the presence of conventional collectors which render the mineral oleophillic.

Mining employees undertaking shift work are at considerable risk of experiencing sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruptions. In the complex, high-risk environment of mining, these sleep and circadian disruptions lead to adverse impacts on employee health, alertness and safety. Evidence-based tools that effectively target improvements in sleep health amongst shift workers are needed. Variability in work hours and individual differences in the response to shift work mean that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution is often insufficient in complex work environments. Currently no interventions provide tailored support for shift workers based on their rosters, personal commitments and sleep habits. Existing technologies, such as smartphone applications and watches, allow sleep monitoring, but their strategies are targeted towards night sleepers, which does not translate to shift work contexts. To address this, our team has developed an innovative digital tool that implements biomathematical models to provide automated, personalised sleep and circadian intervention strategies to optimise sleep, alertness and performance during shift work. The tool uses mathematical models of sleep and alertness regulation that provide physiologically optimal times for an individual to sleep when experiencing circadian disruption. This program of work included co-designed development of a world-first app with shift workers and the examination of the preliminary efficacy of the intervention for improving sleep, alertness and performance.

Na2CO3 is a powerful flux for both dephosphorization and desulphurization in oxidizing atmospheres. In order to study refining with Na2CO3 and the nature of the Na2CO3 slag itself, hot metal (4Kg) was melted in Al203 crucibles in a high frequency induction furnace and oxidised with oxygen under Na2CO3 slag. The behaviour of Na2CO3 at high temperature was observed by thermobalance. It was found that dephosphorization ceases in a few minutes and [,P] after refining is easily lowered to less than 0.010%. [%P] after refining is affected by [Si], [P] of hot metal, the refining temperature and the consumption of Na2CO3. Desulphurization also ceases in a few minutes but it shows curious behaviour, increase of [S], decrease of (S) and increase in sulphur lost, during the latter half of run. An improved method of sample recovery for use with rotary percussion drilling has been developed. Cuttings can be recovered continuously from either dry or wet drilling, and the recovery under dry conditions is seldom below 99% of the cuttings brought to the surface by the rig. The system is designed for use with top drive drilling rigs using flush-jointed drill rods. The key feature of the system is a self-aligning mechanical seal around the drill rods. The sealing unit is removably fixed to a collar section of cas ing. the cuttings are recovered in a plastic bag attached to the bottom outlet of a cyclone. A valve at the bottom of the cyclone permits the cuttings representing various depths to I,e recovered separately for examination eind 0(iclysis. As near-surface underground mines progress deeper, the inevitable question is whether to convert from truck haulage to shaft hoisting. The desire to defer capital expenditure frequently delays investigation of the shaft option, or deferral of a decision to start shaft sinking, unless the shaft option is clearly significantly better than trucking. By the time increasing depth makes trucking uneconomic, there may then be insufficient resource remaining to justify a shaft, and the mine must close. However, had the shaft been built earlier, its lower operating costs would have permitted the mine to continue to greater depths. This paper presents a methodology for investigating the shaft versus trucks decision. As well as the typical analysis of which option is preferable at the time the analysis is conducted, the process presented illustrates how the timing of the decision to sink a shaft is critical. The paper shows how to identify the latest date at which the decision to sink a shaft can be made, after which time the shaft option will not be economic. It also illustrates how to assess the resource that may be required to justify the shaft. Considering this in conjunction with the latest decision date, implications for the companyÆs exploration program are discussed.

All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. A number of cooperative studies have been carried out as preliminary work for drafting a standard for application of granulated slag sand for concrete, and the following conclusions were reached 1 The ten kinds of granulated slag sands pro- duced in Japan satisfy the national standard for fine aggregate in terms of physical and chemical properties. 2 Mortar and concrete tests conducted with granulated slag sand revealed that, although with slight differences in the extent, gran- ulated slag sands used in these tests were applicable'as fine aggregate for concrete, 3 The pumpability test by a concrete pump carried out on concrete with two kinds of now commercially available granulated slag sand demonstrated that the pump pressure feeding is applicable in the same manner as in the case of ordinary concrete. These tests permitted' preparation of a draft standard for application of granulated slag sand, and the results formed the first step toward utilizing this material as a sub- stitute for natural sand.

The Australian mineral industry involves a diverse range of expertise and skills. Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member's specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

Traditional methods of gold extraction have involved comminution and processing via cyanide leaching, all of which are associated with energy, cost and environmental implications. Subsequently, numerous opportunities for improvement and optimisation strategies in gold mining and processing have been explored, including heap leaching, which has significantly lowered comminution costs. This paper explores the effect of the more energy efficient high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) on the comminution behaviour (especially on the crack density) and cyanide leaching performance of laboratory reactors study on run-of-mine gold ore comprising the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) and the Elsburg Reefs (ER), sourced from Carletonville in the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. The ore was comminuted using HPGR at three different pressure settings (120, 90 and 60 bar). Large (-16/+11.2 mm) and small (-5.6/+4 mm) particles of the HPGR product where then mineralogically characterised using optical microscopy, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) and X-ray computer tomography (CT) before cyanidation. The results of the leach experiments indicated a correlation between gold extraction, particle size and crack density. Mineralogical characterisation of the ore indicates that the Fe-sulfides present in the VCR are likely to be more reactive than those in the ER, thus having a more favourable influence on gold cyanidation. Overall, the results show promise for the heap leaching of Witwatersrand gold ores prepared using HPGR and demonstrate the value of a multi-disciplinary geometallurgical approach.CITATION:Nwaila, G, Becker, M, Ghorbani, Y, Petersen, J, Reid, D L, Bam, L C, de Beer, F C and Franzidis, J-P, 2013. P.IISTRACTThe Pacific Rim is advantaged by the uniqueness and diversity of its geological features. Why then is geology given so little regard in the education systems of the countries of this region? Not that these countries differ greatly from those in other parts of the world. Papers presented during the Precollege Geoscience Education session at the 28th International Geological Congress (28th IGC) held in Washington, July, 1989, indicated strongly that the problem is universal. There is a marked decline in interest in the Earth sciences and many nations are looking towards methods that might change this trend. Problems affecting geological education include the lack of purpose and direction, its obsolete curricula and the difficulty in attracting gifted students.The world-wide plight of geology comes at the very time when it should be fundamental to a public understanding of the global effect of human population pressure. There is a universal awareness of "the environment" but very little awareness of the science that has supplied most of the data. Geology, as the science of the Earth, is of paramount importance to an understanding of our life on this planet, particularly in its role as the source of our every need.

Although blasthole deviation is a problem which can seriously affect blasting operations, there is little practical emphasis on controlling this deviation and no practical emphasis on understanding its practical behaviour. The most common way of dealing with it involves tight control over drill set up and surveying hole paths. The surveying might involve simple collar location and inclination measurement to estimate the hole's actual path. At best, some operations routinely survey hole paths after all holes in a stope have been drilled. In addition, although there is an expectation that holes will deviate, there is no planning for this behaviour in order to reduce its impact on the blast. Design decisions are invariably made with the assumption that holes are straight. If and when surveys reveal problems it is possible only to adjust charging and initiation to 'work around them'. In extreme cases the drill might be recalled to fill in gaps. The lack of planning and the lack of understanding are doubtlessly linked.A model is presented that will predict the expected path of a drill hole. By knowing how a selected few holes deviated it is possible to make a good estimate of the deviation of other holes in the same rock mass. After minimal calibration the model can be used to increase the amount of information for a given amount of surveying or the amount of surveying can be reduced while maintaining the same level of knowledge of blasthole deviation. Equally important is the ability to plan for the deviation in future drilling through altering the initial collar angles or drilling from different locations. It is the authors' hope that planning for hole deviation becomes as much a part of the design process as planning for detonator delay scatter and explosive performance variation.

Technological innovations and emerging analytical capabilities are transforming the way drill samples are analysed, with real-time mineralogical analysis made possible. In addition, new business/technical requirements are challenging long standing processes to incorporate more sources of information during planning in order to improve compliance to plan during mining and processing. Unfortunately, the new sources of information that are added do not always have adequate protocols in place to ensure quality data is collected.Spectral data covering the visible – near – short wave – midwave – longwave range are routinely collected by the Geoscience and Exploration department at BHP Billiton Iron Ore for accurate mineralogical identification. These data are used for geological interpretations (logging and modelling) and prediction of physical variables (metallurgical and geotechnical properties).This paper introduces how sampling and quality assurance / quality control concepts have been applied in the spectral data process. Working thick coal seams in Poland is a very serious problem. Nearly 40 per cent of all coal is extracted from seams more than 3 m. thick. In absolute figures this represents about 70 million tons of coal per year. Working seams with thicknesses up to 3.5 m. does not present, at present, major difficul- ties. Working thicker seams calls for a steady improvement in order to increase the degree of utilization of the deposit and to enlarge the concentration of output. The problem is sometimes more difficult because, in many cases, the seams are worked under protected surface structures which compels the mines to use hydraulic stowing with all its advantages and disadvantages. Rock burst hazard, the control of which is the basic problem hindering the mining, is a further problem. The mining systems used in Poland are adapted to these natural and technical conditions.

One of primary causes of poor blast performance is the improper relief of explosive energy. Under or over-confined blasts modify the explosiveÆs path of least resistance, which changes where and when the explosive energy is applied resulting in less than optimum blast performance. During the research for this paper the overbreak characteristics of five full-scale blasts were quantified using high speed cinematography and borehole cameras. The effectiveness of various overbreak control methods was also evaluated to guide design refinement. The results of this research along with general recommendations for reducing excessive damage are included with this paper.

This paper describes studies into two particular aspects of the Lochiel deposit which formed part of feasibility level geot2chnical and hydrogeological investigations for proposed open cut mine development. The two aspects were depressurisation of thick beds of silt located through the profile and the determination of characteristics and origins of soil structure and their effect on pit stability. The studies were very detailed and multi disciplinary and highlight the integration of geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology and mining that is required for mine development studies. It is considered that as more marginal deposits are developed throughout the world the demands for efficient economic mining together with in- creasing scales of operation will require simi- lar types of studies. As such the studies pre- sented herein are likely to be a forerunner to a,emerging trend for development of open pit mines in difficult ground and water conditions.

It is anticipated that many future uranium mines in Australia will be using the in situ leaching mining process. It is fair to say that close to one third of uranium production will be generated by this method, whilst the other two thirds will fall on the uranium generated from hard rock mining and other mining methods, such as traditional open cut mining. For other types of deposits the in situ leaching mining method will remain the best technological, commercial and environmental alternative. It is important to identify and prevent all risks involved in uranium mining. The expertise in this subject is limited. Over the years there was only one mine using the in situ leaching process for uranium extraction in Australia. Computer simulation of propagation of leachate during and after the uranium in situ leaching is a crucial factor, not only for addressing the environmental concerns, but also for the most efficient recovery of the deposit. The decontamination can be modelled for a period of up to 100 years, with the acid neutralisation forecast for a period of up to 400 years. The results of the modelling are paramount for definition of the reserves, efficiency of the mining method and the environmental impact statement. The accuracy of the hydrogeological modelling and carefully selected environmental management program enables a mining company to quantify and minimise the impact of the mining activities on the regional aquifer and to prevent environmental disasters. In the study, the completed hydrogeological model allowed the client, the authorities and the community to make an informed decision about the environmental impact of the in situ leaching of uranium. In particular, the model proved that neither during the mining, nor during the neutralisation the toxic elements would interact with the local catchment area.

The excavation for the Sydney Opera House Parking Station comprises a large donut shaped underground cavern with a central sandstone pillar. The maximum effective roof span is about 19 m and the rock cover is between 7 m and 8 m. Permanent support for the roof and the various services tunnels consists of a combination of tensioned anchors, and untensioned dowels, and mesh with shortcrete and fibrecrete as the final lining. Steel sets were installed at main intersections.Fundamental to the design philosophy for excavation of these spans at such shallow rock cover was the use of monitoring to check on the adequacy of the installed support. Prior to excavation, extensometers, inclinometers, piezometers and surface settlement survey stations were installed. Underground survey stations, anchor load cells and shotcrete pressure cells were installed as excavation proceeded. Excavation commenced at the crown using an initial heading and three widening stages. Geological mapping during excavation confirmed borehole expectations, namely sandstone beds 1 to 4 m thick interbedded with thin shale units. Bedding plane contacts varied over short distances from tight partings to thick brecciated seams. Jointing was subvertical and joints tended to be bed-limited.

Grade Engineering® (GE) involves a range of integrated technologies and operating protocols for improving effective feed grade through early rejection of low value material prior to costly processing activities and has the potential to transform the economics of large, low grade, mining operations. Extensive GE test work by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and the Cooperative Resource Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRCORE) determined that the Gramalote gold deposit in Colombia is highly amenable to implementation of grade-by-size screening to upgrade the ore at a production scale. To understand the relationships between geology and the upgrade response drill core and bulk samples were analysed at the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES) as part of a larger CRCORE project to understand geological controls on grade-by-size deportment, i.e., the tendency for specific mineral phases to preferentially fractionate during breakage into different size fractions. This work is focussed on understanding the role of mineralogy and texture in influencing rock breakage and natural fractionation at a range of scales. Detailed logging of Gramalote drill core and mineralogical analyses including hyperspectral logging, portable and bench-scale X-ray fluorescence (XRF), plus low resolution Laser Ablation of intact drill core pieces, combined with data from site (drill logs, geochemistry, petrophysics) were used to evaluate the ore and alteration mineralogy, vein paragenesis and textural variability. This provided information on gold deportment and allowed the identification of favourable host veins. Bulk sample material from different ore grade zones was also analysed. A comparison with the results of GE testing shows that positive upgrade results are produced by rocks with abundant veins, particularly those associated with potassic and/or white mica alteration. This work indicates upgrade response can be predicted from drill core using data collected by a combination of automated systems including hyperspectral data, XRF, and detailed drill core logging.
