The long term viability of a mining company is dependent on the success of its capital investments. Due to the specialised nature of the design, engineering and construction of large projects the management is often contracted to an outside organisation. This paper is a review of the phases of the relationship between Client and Contractor. A rationale is developed upon which the selection of a Contractor can be made. Subsequently, the key aspects of the Client/Contractor relationship are reviewed with reference to completing the project on time within budget. The aspects discussed include Contractor management systems, qualifications of key personnel, definition of scope of work, industrial relations, project control and Contractor remuneration.

A risk assessment was undertaken of the aquatic ecosystem and bioaccumulation of metals and metalloids in fish at the Leichhardt River, Mount Isa, Queensland. Residual contamination of metals and metalloids in Leichhardt River sediment was assessed and arose from mine practices using river discharge in the 1940s. The ecological risk assessment of sediments involved comparison of the concentrations of heavy metals and arsenic with those of the ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines (ISQG). Results indicated that all sites including the background site exceeded one or both the ISQG-high and ISQG-low trigger values based on total concentrations. A lesser number of sites exceeded the ISQG-low trigger values following the 1 M hydrochloric acid extract step, which was used as an indication of bioavailability. An additional risk from particulate matter in river sediment is that acute human toxicity from the consumption of fish contaminated with metals and metalloids is unlikely. The potential risk was assessed by comparing with the maximum levels set by FSANZ (2010) for fish consumption by children and adults. In general, the liver of the fish have higher heavy metal and metalloid concentrations compared to the muscle. Frequent or regular consumption of fish from the Leichhardt River that exceed maximum levels (ML) of heavy metals and metalloids is not recommended. Risk analysis showed that an adult can consume up to 5 kg of fish fillets every day from fish caught at the man-made Lake Moondarra downstream on Leichhardt River and still be within safe consumption levels whilst a child can eat up to 1 kg daily.CITATION:Noller, B N, Ng, J C, Matanitobua, V, Harris, H H, Zheng, J and Huynh, T, ?2014. The technology of coal preparation, while based on similar processes to those in common useage in the 1950s, has improved significantly over the past 15 years primarily due to advances in process control. This technology at least offers the potential for most coal preparation unit operations to be optimised to a considerable degree. However, to maximise the overall yield of an operation from pit to port, factors often outside of the control of the preparation plant operator have a dominant effect. Specific factors include an in depth knowledge of the feed characteristics of the various sources of coal, the detailed mine scheduling to provide an appropriate blend to the plant, and the interim handling and stockpiling processes between the mine face and the customer.This paper summarises the criteria for optimising the yield for a variety of mining, processing and stockpiling options, based on the principle of operating at constant incremental ash. Pragmatic operating assumptions such as extension of the principle to operating at a constant density for gravity operations will be discussed. A means of optimising the compromise between maintaining specification product ash to the customer and maximising yield by always washing at constant incremental ash, without the benefit of a homogenised feed, will also be Presented.

Uranium solvent extraction, USX has been applied commercially for recovery and concentration for over 50 years. Uranium in acidic liquor, which is prepared following ore leaching, solid/liquid separation and clarification, can be treated through a sequence of operations; extraction-scrubbing-stripping, to obtain purified liquor. USX has dominated the primary uranium industry as the preferred technological route to converter grade yellowcake. The practices of design and operation of USX facilities has found renewed interest as new mines are developed following decades of industry dormancy. This article seeks to outline principles of design and operation from the practitioner’s perspective. The discussion also reviews historical developments of USX applications and highlights recent innovations. This review is hoped to provide guidance for technical personnel who wish to learn more about good practices that leads to reliable USX performance.

This research was done to reduce silica from mixed hematite concentrate of Barfkar Iron Ore Sample and increase Fe grade using reverse flotation method (Depressing Hematite and floating Silica). The used sample in the reverse flotation tests was a mixture containing two types of hematite concentrates (Spiral cleaner concentrate and Slon-VPHGMS cleaner concentrate) with the percentage of 16 per cent and 84 per cent, respectively. Fe grade of two samples was 59.31 per cent and 57.52 per cent and SiO2 grade was 5.83 per cent and 6.71 per cent, respectively. After mixing, the Fe and SiO2 grade of the mixed sample was measured at 58.10 per cent and 6.20 per cent. For flotation tests, effect of variable operational parameters including feed size distribution (d80 = 130 microns and d80 = 53 microns), pulp solidity (25 per cent and 30 per cent w/w), pH (9.70, 10.20 and 11), Sodium silicate as a dispersant (500, 1000 and 2000 g/ton), Starch as a depressant (500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 g/ton) and EDA as a collector (180, 300, 400 and 500 g/ton) were investigated. For evaluating the influence of Sodium silicate and Starch dosage, initial flotation tests were performed on the main sample (d80 = 130 microns). These two parameters had no significant effects on the yield, Fe, and SiO2 grade of flotation concentrate based on test results. In the next step, screen analysis was carried out on the main sample for mineralogical studies. Accordingly, the suitable size distribution for releasing Fe and SiO2 particles was smaller than 53 microns. Therefore, the sample was crushed until d80 = 53 microns. Then, supplementary tests were performed on the crushed sample for studying the pH range, pulp solidity, and EDA collector dosage. After doing silica removal flotation tests based on the designed pattern and comparison of the results, the conditions consisting of size distribution d80 = 53 microns, pulp solidity 25 per cent, pH 10.20, Sodium silicate 1000 g/ton, Starch 1000 g/ton, and EDA 500 g/ton was selected as optimum values. In the last test, Fe and SiO2 grade was measured at 60.00 per cent and 3.93 per cent, respectively, and Fe recovery was obtained at 74.93 per cent.

Resource characterisation is critical for informed decisions in both strategic and operational space. The sources of information for resource characterisation are limited by: direct measurement of resource attributes, such as grades, rock-types, mineralogy, and are available only from sparse locations, ie drill holes; or indirect geophysical measurements such as seismic, gravity or electro[1]magnetic survey. Data collection tools, methods, and processing technologies are constantly improving providing a broad spectrum of options for data collection strategies. The cost of each data survey varies from thousands to millions of dollars with the value of each additional data having diminishing return for a particular business decision. The value of information analysis provides the optimal decision on data collection strategy within a limited available budget. This work presents an example of value of information analysis for new Blast Hole Assay Tool (BHAT) and Reverse Circulation Grade Control (RCGC) data used in addition to the wider spaced exploration data. The value of information is quantified in terms of reduction of grade uncertainty, ore loss and dilution by comparing different combinations of data collection methods. Four different strategies were considered: exploration samples in addition to 50 per cent of blastholes surveyed with BHAT, exploration samples in addition to 33 per cent of blastholes surveyed with BHAT, exploration with wide-spaced RCGC data, and exploration without additional grade control. For each strategy the observed values have been simulated using advanced multivariate geostatistical simulations and compared with simulated ground truth models. The calculated uncertainty, ore loss and dilution informed the optimal data collection strategy. Opportunity to reduce sample density from the nominal 50 per cent of drill holes was evaluated.

In today’s operating environment many conventional cleaner circuits struggle to produce final grade concentrate with acceptable levels of non-sulfide gangue and/or penalty elements. This is primarily due to poor selectivity and the entrainment of gangue, and is further exacerbated by the processing of lower grade ores with more complex mineralogy that require finer grinding for liberation. In new concentrators, the standard approach to cleaner circuit design is to define the number of stages of mechanical cells required to achieve the desired concentrate grade. Residence time is the primary factor to size cells and to determine the number of cells required to attain target recovery. While it is required for recovery, a bank of mechanical cells is not the ideal solution to maximise concentrate grade. Relatively coarse bubble size means slow flotation of fines, requiring long residence times. The combination of long residence times and no froth washing means higher entrainment as the pulp becomes more barren and froth stability decreases down a bank.In recent years, the Jameson Cell technology has been retrofitted into a number of concentrators around the world to solve both cleaner circuit capacity and concentrate grade issues. Jameson Cells have been installed at the head of conventional cleaner circuits to produce final grade concentrate in a single step of flotation using a single cell (referred to here as ‘cleaner scalping’ duty). The experience gained from these installations has provided the platform for the design of improved and simpler cleaner circuits that will perform better and be more robust to operate. This paper analyses traditional cleaner circuit designs and explains the philosophy behind new hybrid cleaner circuits, which use Jameson Cells to produce final concentrate and mechanical cells for a ‘cleaner scavenger’ duty. The advantages of the new cleaner circuit design are demonstrated by a case study from an operating plant. Engineering studies show that the better metallurgical performance can be achieved with less equipment than conventional cleaning designs, reducing capital cost, operating cost, and with more than 30 per cent energy savings.Finally, the paper describes simple modifications to the standard laboratory flotation test procedures which accurately simulate this new cleaner circuit using routine equipment.CITATION:Huynh, L, Araya, R, Seaman, D R, Harbort, G and Munro, P D, 2014. Roadheaders were introduced to mining and tunnelling in the early-1960s. Since this period their main field of application has been for roadway drivages in coal mines and for mineral production, for instance in coal, rocksalt, potash and gypsum mines. Their main field of application in tunnelling is in softer and partly friable rock formations, a suitable area for non-blasting excavation. However, in longer tunnel sections excavators with high ripping forces have replaced roadheaders in many situations. The main arguments against roadheaders have been and still are:a sharp increase in excavation cost with increasing rock strength and increasing abrasivity; and greater risks in conditions which have not been, or could not be, investigated to a sufficient extent. These arguments have, to a great extent, restricted practical roadheader application in production mining and in a lot of æstandardÆ tunnel projects. To address these limitations, factors which could make roadheaders attractive for such conditions and could overcome existing technological difficulties have been investigated. Extension of the economic field of application in hard rock was found to be the most important and the most effective step forward.

The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

Since 2009, the Northern Territory and Australian governments have been working under a national partnership arrangement to inform a rehabilitation plan for the former Rum Jungle uranium mine. Part of the rehabilitation strategy is to backfill a flooded former pit (Pit), which extends down to 100m below the current pit lake surface and was historically partially backfilled with uranium tailings. It is proposed to utilise the remaining pit volume below water level to sub-aqueously store Potentially Acid Forming (PAF-I) waste rock which currently occupies large stockpiles across the site. The rehabilitation design and planning process undertaken to develop a strategy commensurate to project objectives and construction constraints involved the establishment of key constraints derived from the analysis of historic data sources and preliminary design efforts. Tabled strategies were balanced against dependent project tasks and project objectives, especially surrounding minimising disturbance of highly contaminated materials within the Pit. Ideas were developed in conjunction with industry input and review of case histories to develop a remediation solution that is constructible within the project timeframe and constraints.

At the Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden sulfide-rich, poorly buffered tailings have been deposited in five impoundments located along a valley. The tailings area has been remediated by applying a combination of till cover and flooding. A new method that has been applied to parts of the tailings area is to raise the groundwater table to saturate the tailings. By increasing pH by liming, thereby reducing metal mobility, a water-covered downstream impoundment is functioning as a trap for metals released from the till-covered impoundments upstream. In this paper the efficiency of the system approach used at Kristineberg is evaluated. Progressive changes of water quality from groundwater in the upstream till-covered impoundments via surface streams within the pond system to the water in the flooded downstream pond and its outlet are described. The results show that the system approach used in the design of the remediation programme of the tailings works as planned. The sulfide oxidation rate has decreased in the till-covered impoundments, and, as predicted, there is an out-flush of old weathering products which will continue for at least five years before equilibrium is reached. The groundwater in the till-covered impoundments has high concentrations of Fe, S, Mg and Zn, but the concentrations of metals such as Cu, Cd and Pb are much lower than before the till cover was applied. The limed pond is an efficient metal trap, with concentrations as high as 2.76 per cent Zn and 0.28 per cent Cu in the calcite-gypsum sludge developed on the tailings. The outlet from the flooded pond, and thus from the whole mining area, releases small amounts of metals to the recipient in comparison to the amounts that are in movement within the mining area. During the period May to November, 13 kg dissolved Zn and 111 kg particulate Zn was released to the recipient, whereas a total of 27 000 kg was transported by surface water within the impoundment system during the same period. The results from Kristineberg show that when planning remediation of complex mining areas, it is useful to adopt a system approach in which different methods are used on different parts of the area along the flow path of the drainage water, whereas flooding of the downstream pond is the key to the performance of the entire system.

Located in North West Queensland, XstrataÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) is one of the largest underground mines in Australia with annual production exceeding six million tonnes of ore with average copper grades of three per cent. As at 30 June 2006, the Ore Reserve inventory totalled 87 Mt, with annual diamond drilling planned at >40 000 m in order to convert existing resources and test and define exploration targets. The role of the geology department within MICO is to collect, interpret and communicate relevant geological information to ensure the optimal extraction of ore. Routine underground inspections across multiple ore sources are undertaken and the information derived is then distributed to a range of professionals, operational personnel and management. The information is a æreal-timeÆ geological view for the stakeholders. Ongoing data collection and interpretation has developed a strong geological input to all mine planning processes within MICO. This has created strong synergies between mine planning professionals and a throughput benefit has been seen all the way to the concentrator. The MICO geological framework also provides avenues for a geological focus away from short-term production requirements, and as a result significant orebody scale observations and patterns have been realised that have led to an increase in the accuracy of geological and resource models. This has provided practical benefits for short-term scheduling and production, whilst enabling the realisation of long-term benefits that have a strong potential to increase the volume and value of the MICO resource. This paper will discuss the various mine geology contributions at MICO and illustrate some examples where mine geological input from graduate level has added significant value to the MICO business.

The Copper Canyon deposits, occur in proximity to the regionally distinctive formational boundary between the Staveley Formation and Marimo Shale. The mineralisation here is associated with breccias, veins, and alteration zones near the base of the Marimo Shale unit and in the underlying evaporitic dolomite-dololutite dominant Staveley Formation. The Marimo Shale unit, in its basal 60 metres, is highly carbonaceous and hosts ubiquitous but minor diagenetic (?) copper-pyrite, and on occasion, extensive albite-microcline alteration centres, pyritic (cobaltiferous)-quartz veins, and microcline-quartz_+plagioclase veins or veinlet arrays. The most significant mineralisation, such as at the Greenrnount prospect, consists of a shallowly dipping package of alteration zones overprinted by multiple generations of pink-orange microcline-quartz-chalcopyrite-pyrite-(arsenopyrite) and albite-calcite- phlogopite veins. Accessory mineralogies in most of these mineralisation styles consist of tourmaline, monazite, rutile, and apatite. Chalcopyrite (and secondary chalcocite) and gold are associated with each generation of alteration but are best developed in the later stages of veining. In the underlying Staveley Formation, which is a conformable transition between the Corella Formation limestones and the Marimo Shale, chalcopyrite (cobaltiferous)-pyrite mineralisation occurs as disseminations in pre- and syntectonic breccias, and with disaggregated silica pseudomorphs (after thinly bedded evaporitic sulphate beds) and associated dolomitised limestone-calcilutite. Although this mineralisation may be partly diagenetic in origin the 200 in thick evaporitic packages are also host to a locally widespread (2 to 4 km long and 200 to >500 metres wide) and pervasive 'redrock' styled microcline-dolomite¦hematite alteration. Within this gross alteration package there also seems to be a consistent association with narrow (10 to 100 metres wide), linear (stratabound) semi-massive magnetite-hematite-microcline and quartz-chalcedony replacement zones. Like much of the nearby Corella Formation the Staveley Formation, under the Marimo Shale, has undergone dissolution, paleo-solution karsting (breccias) and tectonic brecciation such that the precursor lithological details have been progressively obliterated. The post-diagenetic to post-tectonic fluid pathway development and metasomatic alteration history of this important lithostructural package of rocks has been traced from preliminary studies only. The ability to do so is largely due to the absence of significant regional and contact metamorphic overprinting, and the local preservation of precursor sediment profiles. It is proposed that both the base of the Marimo Shale and parts of the underlying evaporitic-limestone-dololutite have acted as conformable fluid pathways for hydrothermal and (perhaps) diagenetically derived, Cu-Au-(¦Co ¦As) K-Na-Ti-REE bearing, fluids and brines.

For the last 4 years political leaders have found a new subject on which they can safely generalize wihout creating opposition. That sub- ject is commodity prices. Since the four-fold increase in OPEC crude oil prices, public atten- tion has focussed as never before on the subject of commodity prices. To advocate stabilizing com- modity prices is akin to supporting motherhood or peace or better schooling. Everyone gives lip service to the concept that stable commodity prices are desirable. It is easier to state the principle than to achieve it. Prices that are stable in terms of one currency may be clearly unstable in terms of a different currency. This has become a troublesome matter since 1971, when the world's leading trading currencies were set free to float in relation to each other. To illustrate: consider copper prices in the interval between the end of 1974 and the end of 1977. During those 3 years, the copper price in pounds sterling on the London Metal Exchange rose by 25 per cent. During that period, however, in terms of the USA dollar equivalent, the price was unchanged. And during that period, in terms of the German mark equivalent the price shrank by 13 per cent while the Japanese yen equivalent f.11 1k

Several mineral resources have been recognised to alkaline igneous rocks. In general, these mineralisations present low P grades, so a complex concentration process is required to achieve commercial grade concentrates. This process is guided not only by the ore characteristics, such as apatite grain size and liberation degree, gangue minerals and slimes content, but also by different apatite varieties, iron oxi-hydroxide surface coating and roughness. The main techniques applied to apatite and phosphate ore characterisation, such as optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface techniques and magnetic separation are discussed, aiming to evaluate distinct apatite varieties and their technological behaviour.

Gentlemen, you heard the good Doctor has commissioned me to make a'summary of the proceedings to date and also to close the said proceedings. It seems that over the years the business of making a summary alternates between'Mr. Pearce and myself, also I,think that w~oever is around onthe day in question 'obtains the task and apparently I drew it this, year. It is hoped you will be patient as previous experience in this capacity'indicates that the best way to proceed is to have a brief summary on each paper and then do a summary of summa~ies. This makes the approacha little cumbersome but it is felt to be fair to each author and it brings'back to the audience some recollections of what transpired at the time and they can make their own decisions, which may not necessarily agree with those of the 'sum'marisor.

Magnesium International Limited (MIL) has broken new ground in their desire to integrate their mineral development activities in the Southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia in to the communities of the region, despite there being no statutory requirement to do so. In their efforts to define a magnesite resource adjacent to the proposed site for a magnesium metal processing facility, MIL opened their exploration program up for public consultation. In conjunction with the Port Pirie Regional Development Board (PPRDB), a community group was formed to review the impact of exploration and mining on the ecologically sensitive Southern Flinders region. This voluntary move towards full community consultation for mineral exploration was a first in South Australia and probably in Australia. The Community Focus Group (CFG) worked closely with MIL, Primary Industries and Resources of South Australia (PIRSA) and the Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) in the development of an exploration program and Declaration of Environmental Factors (DEF) acceptable to all stakeholders. Collaboratively, the community concerns were discussed and addressed, with the community gaining a very comprehensive understanding of the exploration process and possible future mine development. A balance of social, environmental and economic factors was developed that was accepted by all parties and encapsulated in the final DEF for approval by the regulatory authority. The consultation process was a new experience for all of the stakeholders, each of them effectively exploring new ground in addressing information dissemination, risk management and the social versus economic equation. MIL developed not only a viable and acceptable exploration program but also substantially reinforced its position as a responsible corporate citizen with the Southern Flinders communities.

La Colosa, Colombia is a large gold-porphyry deposit currently undergoing feasibility studies by AngloGold Ashanti. This period of development allows the opportunity to apply innovative and emerging testing and modelling methods to provide a predictive geometallurgical recovery model for the deposit. By partnering with the AMIRA P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) research project, the geological and mineralogical data are analysed with respect to liberation and recovery methods. This will allow the variability in the geology and mineralogy of the deposit and key relationships recognised in the data to be included in the development of a model to help predict recoveries of the gold. Many aspects of the gold mineralisation such as gold paragenesis, associations, grain size and texture are determined and analysed using optical microscopy, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA), and laser ablation (LA-ICP-MS). At La Colosa the gold has been located in sulfides (eg pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite), silicates, along silicate phase boundaries, and among the pyrite-rich intermediate argillic alteration. Further testing and analysis will also determine if ‘invisible’ gold is present in the pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. Recovery methods can also be determined and tested after combining the results of mineralogy tests with other data (eg results of comminution tests). Indices for the mineralisation and recovery are developed using image analysis and analytical testing. These indices are correlated with recovery data from the company to develop a predictive block model for recovery. The goal is to develop cost-effective, efficient methods to analyse the mineralogy and geology of the deposit; understand the variability in the mineralogy, geology, and recovery; and construct a predictive geometallurgical recovery model.

Concerns regarding the uncertainty of stope dilution at MMG Dugald River Underground Mine led to a trial stoping program to acquire full-scale comprehensive geotechnical information and to test the validity of the geotechnical and mining parameters. Given that stope production drilling and blasting is a key parameter that influences dilution a detailed stope blast vibration project was implemented. The stoping trial consisted of 19 stopes, a combination of both sublevel open stoping and longitudinal and transverse stopes, of which five were monitored for blast vibrations.The blast vibration project utilised 20 triaxial geophones and five triaxial accelerometers installed in the hanging wall of five monitored stopes. For each stope fired, full blast waveforms were recorded along with detailed information of the blast design. Analysis of the blast vibrations used the Holmberg-Persson approach, with potential damage determined by the relative (Holmberg-Persson) K values.The project identified the benefit of parallel, breakthrough slot holes in reducing blast vibration damage. The results show that radial rings toeing or stabbing into the stope wall lead to higher vibrational energy yield which contributed to increased overbreak. Hanging wall overbreak, by comparison, with parallel, breakthrough blastholes with 1 m standoff, combined with lower density explosive charging (0.8 EP) and increased delays limited blast vibration damage. A number of ring burdens from 1.4 m to 2.5 m were monitored with no difference in terms of energy yield being identified.
