The initial planning and detail design phase leading to the development of a 7.5 m internal shaft to service the deep 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa, Queensland is well advanced. The choice of internal shaft access was made over alternative methods such as a decline from existing levels and borehole hoisting. The resulting access development requirements and shaft configuration for production have been determined. Several techniques are being studied for shaft development. These include the application of blind shaft drilling and large hole reaming methods as well as conventional sinking techniques. As the 3000/3500 Orebodies extend from 1000 metres to more than 1800 metres below the surface, high stress conditions and ground temperatures ranging from 45CC to 62CC are anticipated. The effect of these on the methods being investigated to create a favourable working environment will influence the final choice. Exploration diamond drilling is in progress to confirm the geology of the orebodies so that planning for their extraction including refrigerated ventilation concepts can proceed.

The results of about 30 years of exploration and mining activities and research studies in the Kambalda mining district, Western Australia, have led to general agreement that the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores formed as a result of igneous processes (Ross, 1974; Ross and Hopkins, 1975; Gresham and Loftus-Hills, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Lesher, 1989 and many others). Despite this agreement, the controls on sulphide supersaturation and concentration of the resulting sulphide in a limited zone, remain uncertain and controversial. A major uncertainty is the source of sulphur in the ore deposits. Two principal sulphur sources have been proposed: 1. komatiite lava/magma (Hudson, 1972; Naldrett, 1973; Lesher et al, 1981; Cowden, 1988; Foster et at, 1995), and 2. sedimentary material (Groves, Barrett and McQueen, 1979; Lesher, Arndt and Groves, 1984; Lesher, 1989; Lesher and Campbell, 1993). Resolution of the uncertainty regarding the sulphur source is required for a complete understanding of the controls on ore formation, which in turn would significantly impact exploration strategies in the Kambalda mining district and elsewhere. This paper reviews the constraints on sulphur sources for the komatiite-associated Ni sulphide ores in the Kambalda mining district. The focus is on the general characteristics of the ores and surrounding rocks: individual ore deposits are not described, though specific examples are noted where appropriate. The stratigraphic and volcanic settings and geochemical (major and trace element and isotopic compositions) characteristics of the ore deposits and surrounding rocks are considered within the context of the competing sulphur source models, and future directions of research in the district are noted.

Mechanically coupled rock bolts encapsulated in cementitious or polyester cartridge resin grouts have been widely adopted for various underground rock reinforcement applications. Resin grouts are considered a superior product, however, both systems have their advantages and limitations, with the relative performance, quality installation cost and cycle time as the most notable parameters. Both applications have optimal rock bolt combinations and preferred ground conditions. Cementitious grouts are favourable for use with secondary deep embedment anchors. These are installed using various equipment with a series of autonomous tasks required to complete the installation cycle. The cartridge resin system can be utilised by a bolting or face boring rock drill to complete the full support installation cycle. This reduction in equipment changeouts mid-cycle generally deems it the more practical application and popular choice for primary support. Self-drilling anchors (SDAs) and hollow bolts have been a viable alternative to traditional rock reinforcement in variable and challenging ground conditions. Using a pumpable post installation grouting system, SDAs have proven to aid the quality of installation, but due to the additional equipment and cycle steps associated with application, the cycle time is increased. In recent years, fully mechanised bolting equipment designed to utilise a combination of self-drilling anchors and a thixotropic pumpable resin installed in a single pass has entered the market. This innovation is anticipated to deliver the advantages described above, with fewer limitations, and significantly improved development and rehabilitation rates. St Barbara Mining and Byrnecut Australia, supported by Master Builders Solutions, were first to conduct extensive trials and implement this rock bolting approach in an Australian hard rock underground mine and record the actual performance.

Samples of limestone and micaceous hematite have been ground in a laboratory batch mill using equal weights of either rods or balls. Values of the Schuhmann distribution modulus, a, have been shown to depend on grind time and do not remain constant as often reported. The linear reduction in a with grind time was attributed to a change in grinding mechanisms with time. The product sizing from ball milling limestone showed a bimodal distribution, but rod milling produced a unimodal size distribution. The product sizing from milling micaceous hematite was difficult to interpret due to the major influence of the shape factor on the transition from screen sizing to cyclosizing.

The dynamic behaviour of the load in a pilot-scale ball mill has been measured as a function of axial position within the mill, end plate lifter design, load volume J (percent of mill volume), percent solids in the slurry S and mill speed N (percent of critical speed). Conductivity probes were inserted through the shell of the mill to provide online measurements of the dynamic orientation of the load in the mill. It was found that 1. the height of the shoulder of the load is increased by increasing J, S or N. 2. Measurements of the effect of S on the location of the shoulder of the load should be very useful in mill control strategies. 3. The axial centre of gravity of the load in the mill is not affected by operating conditions. 4. The presence of lifters on the feed end plate does not affect the torque drawn by the mill. 5. Holdup of slurry in the mill is a strong function of slurry viscosity and a weak function of mill speed.

Two innovative ground reinforcement products have been developed for use in the mining industry. One of these products is a high strength polyethylene (HOPE) bar for use as a rib bolt in underground coal mining and as a corrosion proof tendon in open pit mines. The other product is a cable bolt (Ultrastrand) which demonstrates enhanced load transfer and is available in continuous lengths. Ultrastrand's exceptional in- situ performance and versatility makes it ideal for mechanised installation in both underground and surface mining operations. Details of these products are presented and results from labortaory and field trials are discussed.

This paper describes the design of the steel fibre reinforced precast concrete (SFRC) segmental lining for the intake and discharge tunnels for the Gold Coast desalination plant in Queensland. In addition, the key design requirements and design methods for the lining of these 2 km long, 2.8 m internal diameter tunnels, including structural, durability and maintenance requirements are discussed. Details of the segment configuration and erection process are presented along with information on the manufacture and trial testing of the concrete for the segments. The paper also gives a brief introduction to steel fibre reinforced concrete behaviour. Construction of the tunnels commenced in April 2007, and the authors believe this is the first application of this technology in Australia.

As a direct result of the Mining Industries need to improve efficiency and production in Open Pit type operations, the size of haulage units have increased dramatically. This trend has continued such, that the majority of dump trucks operating in Open Pit operations are in the 170 ton class. Continued mining in existing locations has meant that the increase in vertical lift and resultant grades, and increases in hauling distances are making electric drive systems unsuitable. This is largely due to the electric drive systems heat limitations on major propulsion components. With these mining requirements in view and the present limitations on electric drive systems in mind, Komatsu have been developing the Komatsu HD1600M. Spray-on liners used in the mining industry for ground support and stabilisation applications are either cement based (æshotcreteÆ) or polymer based (æthin spray-on linersÆ). Some thin spray-on liners are a blend of both polymer and cement (eg Tekflex). A small number of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have been trialled in Australia as potential replacements for steel mesh in roadways and other underground mining applications; however, they were found to cure slowly and the cured coatings became brittle after an extended time in place. The University of Wollongong in collaboration with the Australian coal mining industry has shown that a viable polymer-based alternative to steel mesh in underground roadway support applications can be developed to eliminate the use and handling of steel mesh. The work to date has: established the feasibility of developing polymeric alternatives to steel mesh in underground roadway support applications; identified the physical and material constraints to be endured by any new polymeric skin reinforcement system by measuring the mechanical properties of steel mesh; identified materials that can be spray applied; and demonstrated that polymer mechanical properties can be optimised to produce similar mechanical properties (elastic modulus, yield stress, elongation-at-break, etc) to steel mesh. The identified materials will: allow the face support cycle to be fully automated, or at least remotely operated and installed; remove personnel from the immediate face area; and substantially improve underground roadway development rates.

Instability in spoil piles and in high wall slopes in natural overburden has been ex- perienced at Utah's Goonyella Mine since com- mencement of operations in early 1971. Annual production targets, although gener- ally met since the commencement of operations, required modifications to stripping and mining techniques and the rapid re-scheduling of oper- ations around unstable areas, but culminated in the earlier than planned acquisition of addit- ional stripping equipment. An understanding of failure mechanisms was developed within a collaborative study of pitwall instability between Utah Development Company and the C.S.I.R.O. Division of Applied Geomechanics. Results showed that pitwall instability occurs as structurally controlled deformations along planar failure surfaces; spoil pile failures are precipitated by moist- ure ingress and subsequent loss of strength of base layer materials; highwall failures de- velop over areally extensive bedding planes in conjunction with inclined and subvertical fractures caused by overburden blast damage.

Correct sampling practices are of vital importance to the mining industry; key decisions for the business are made on the basis of samples in all the value chain. Geology plays a relevant role in pre- and post-investment stages. Actually the understanding of natural variability is essential for geological modelling, geometallurgical modelling, mine planning, grade and process control. Improper sampling practices obstruct this objective introducing irrelevant variability components, which can cause monumental economic losses. A good approach to accomplish this understanding is the application of heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests, which are useful tools to quantify the variability of a certain well-delimited geological unit at different comminution scales. The application of heterogeneity test can help minimise Pierre GyÆs fundamental sampling error and to study the impact of other sampling errors. IngamellÆs test allows us to define the correct mass of sample for chemical analysis. This paper presents the results of several heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests done in Chilean porphyry copper deposits that belong to CODELCO Chile (Chuquicamata, Mina Sur, Radomiro Tomic, El Salvador, Andina and Teniente), in different geological units (endogenous oxides, exotic oxides, supergene sulfides and hypogene sulfides) and for several elements (Cut, Cus, Mo and As). These tests, considering the natural variability, have helped us develop accurate sampling protocols to minimise the fundamental error to acceptable levels. A major contribution of these tests (more than 30) is the generation of secure sampling protocols using the highest sampling constant obtained in the tests, for new porphyry copper deposits that donÆt have information given by heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests.

Conveyor belt haulage offers the advan tages of continuity of operation, minimum labour requirements, and the ability to handle large volumes of material over extended periods. However, breakdown of critical con- veyors in the system can cause undue and substantial losses in production output at the working faces, unless adequate surge bin capacity is incorporated in the haulage system. A conveyor belt simulation programme, code name 'Beltsim' was developed by Bucklen et al (1968) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the U.S.A. and provides a quantitative measure of the performance of a conveyor belt network design. A limitation still exists with the computer programme and involves the inability of the programme to predict the necessary surge bin capacity to overcome conveyor belt downtime. The computer programme was modified to overcome this limitation, to simulate a con- veyor belt breakdown, and to provide a quantitative prediction of the surge bin capacity necessary to permit a modern mining system to operate effectively and continuously.

Supercritical fluids are gases compressed to near liquid densities and, as such, have unique properties compared to liquids: low viscosity; zero latent heat; high diffusivity and pressure-dependent, solvation characteristics. These properties are being utilised in new processes and current research is delineating areas where such processes may be applicable to extractive metallurgy. The processes and areas of interest are as follows: Supercritical Fluid Extraction in which substrates are dissolved at high pressure and fractionated at successively lower pressures. Areas of interest include extraction of organic materials for regeneration of activated carbon for the CIP process and for upgrading alumina industry products and, separation of transition metal chlorides. ò Supercritical Water Oxidation in which high pressure gaseous water acts as a medium in which substrates are oxidised while suspended or dissolved. This process may be of use for oxidation of organics in Bayer liquor and oxidation of mine waters etc. ò Supercritical Fluid Reactions where reactions occur in a supercritical fluid medium, particularly when the medium itself is a reactant. This may be of use in treating refractory or carbon-aqueous auriferous ores and in lower-temperature chlorination of transition metal oxides. Research is described which is aimed at chlorination and separation of transition metal oxides by two supercritical operations.

G-ResourcesÆ Martabe Mine in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a US$700 M world-class and world-scale operation in a country which, with a few notable smaller scale exceptions, has had no significant hard rock mining development in more than ten years.The mine was commissioned in the middle part of 2012 and poured first gold on 24 July. At full production Martabe will produce 250 000 oz/a of gold and 2 - 3 Moz/a of silver at cash costs in the lowest quartile. The mine location is on the west coast of North Sumatra, which experiences annual rainfall of 4 m with no notable dry season, adjacent to seismically active fault zones, and relatively close to a rural community of 31 000 people with no significant industrial experience.The management team has successfully forged strong links with the various government departments and levels in Jakarta, North Sumatra Province and the local Regencies; developed long-term relationships with the various community groups within the local district of Batangtoru to build a sustainable social licence; has dealt with the physical and environmental challenges presented by the project location, and has successfully raised more than US$900 M over a period of three years for the original acquisition then the development of the project.Whilst in its infancy of operation, the mine is set up to deliver a long-term sustainable future for the company, the shareholders, and the people of Batangtoru and all stakeholders generally. In the last decade, the use of advanced implicit modelling software/algorithms in mineral resource workflows has become a best practice in the mining industry. In most cases, these workflows can easily replicate the level of detail of explicitly modelled geometries, even for very complex deposits. These techniques are flexible and can produce fast results since software is responsible for generating 3D surfaces and solids based on geological and interpretation data. Nevertheless, depending on how unique and complex some deposits are, intense manual editing and input are required to honour the geological context and produce the desired outcome. The current geological modelling workflow at George Fisher Mine (GFM) is based on the semi-automatic built-in tool that generates stratigraphic sequences (stacked lithology layers) based on logging and mapping data. This tool (stratigraphic sequence from Leapfrog Geo™) works for the majority of areas in the mine but fails to capture observed mineralisation pinch-outs in operational areas and at extrapolated boundaries of the deposit. These pinch-outs have the potential to negatively impact grade forecasts if not resolved manually. Using built-in software tools only, the alternative for a more accurate model is to generate each individual layer and adding tens of thousands of manual interpretation points to honour pinch-outs (based on the amount of existing drilling in the mine and number of layers). This approach would require an estimated minimum of two to four years of a full-time employee (FTE) to be exhaustively completed. This study presents an automated approach to generate pinch-out points using a set of Python scripts that only take a few minutes to run. The newly generated points are then combined into the commercial software workflow as interpretation points, honouring observed pinch-outs. The remarkable time difference between approaches removes chance of manual errors and allows mine geologists to spend valuable time in validation and testing of scenarios, ensuring they are more representative of the deposit’s geology.

A number of ideal detonation codes are used internationally for estimating the strength of explosives compositions. Important and far reaching decisions by explosives users are ofen based on the predictions of these codes, but since different codes can deliver very different answers for the same composition, there is a strong possibility of decision makers being misled. In order to both provide a sensible basis for comparing the theoretical energy from explosives from different manufacturers and to prevent the entire rating system from slipping into disrepute, it is in the interests of all to reach agreement on fundamental criteria used by detonation codes for detemtining strength. The problem is illustrated by a case history and basic conventions are proposed, specifically the adoption of energy of reaction as a fundamental and code independent indicator of explosive energy, and agreement on disclosure by suppliers of key non-proprietary information. These measures would assist explosives customers in assessing the true strengths of explosives from the strengths calculated by the different ideal Codes.

Collector and frother molecules in sulfide mineral flotation are thought to have separate roles in the flotation process, where the collector selectively hydrophobizes the mineral surface and the frother adsorbs onto the bubble surface, inhibiting bubble coalescence. Molecular interactions have been observed between these molecules which allow them to co-adsorb at each of the respective interfaces, improving pulp phase recovery. This study investigated the molecular interactions between sodium diethyl dithiophosphate (SDEDTP) and hexanol, and the mechanism by which these interactions improve the recovery of galena. In this study each of the respective interfaces were investigated for the adsorption of SDEDTP. The adsorption of SDEDTP on galena was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and isothermal titration calorimetry. At the air-water interface foam stability and pulp bubble coalescence was used to quantitatively discern if there are interactions between SDEDTP and hexanol. Microflotation and induction time experiments were performed to determine the effect of SDEDTP, hexanol and their mixtures on mineral recovery and bubble-particle attachment. The results of all these tests were collated to determine if SDEDTP-hexanol mixtures synergistically improve sulfide mineral recovery. It was found that SDEDTP reduced bubble coalescence in the pulp demonstrating activity at the airwater interface. Together SDEDTP and hexanol synergistically enhanced foam stability. This indicated that there are attractive molecular interactions between these reagents. Even though DTP did not adsorb onto galena, DTP-frother mixtures synergistically improved the recovery and attachment probability of this mineral. Adsorption studies with aeration showed that DTP in the presence of a frother transfers from the air-water interface to the galena mineral-water interface during bubble-particle collision. It was proposed that the transfer of hexanol through the thin film enhanced the kinetics of film thinning between the bubble and the particle by destabilising the thin film thus improving pulp phase mineral recovery.

Carrapateena is a copper-gold deposit hosted in a brecciated granite complex, located 500km North of Adelaide, South Australia. The deposit is being mined using the Sub Level Caving (SLC) Mining method at a rate of 4.25 MTPA. The Carrapateena SLC construction was completed in Q4 2019, with ramp up to a mine production rate of 4.25 MTPA completed within 12 months; ~ 6 months earlier than originally planned (OZ Minerals, 2020b). Traditional SLC designs have had issues with safety interactions on production levels, namely at the perimeter drive, as well as presented challenges for the application of automation due to frequency of activity required to achieve ring turnover rates. Safety in design provides an opportunity to learn from experience at recent modern SLC operations and by considering hazards early in the design process minimise exposure and improve safety, productivity and automation of mining activity. This paper discusses the work carried out during the Carrapateena feasibility study and optimised during project execution; to update the SLC production level mine design, with a layout known as the Carrapateena Crows Foot Level Layout. This paper focuses on: • An introduction to the Carrapateena Operation and mine plan. • An overview and historical challenges of traditional level layout. • An introduction to the Carrapateena Crows Foot level layout, including production level design parameters as well as development metres and productivity comparisons. • Outlines the benefits of the Crows Foot design for safety in design of SLC operations. Provides a roadmap for improved production efficiency, level operational philosophy and the application of automation within the SLC.

Valuers of mineral properties should be aware that accountants are a major user of their opinions of value. Reliance by accountants can range from obtaining comfort that book values in balance sheets are not overstated to establishing values by which to assess the fairness of a takeover offer. Accountants using mineral property valuations clearly can't be expected to have the same level of expertise as the valuer and ""second guess"" the valuation. But they do have an obligation, under the ASC guidelines and their own professional standards, to'check the logic and reasonableness of the valuation before being able to rely on it. This means reviewing the valuation report for general sensibility, discussing the methodologies and assumptions with the valuer and being satisfied as to his competence and independence. This paper outlines how accountants use mineral property valuations, the level of scrutiny applied to such valuations and the problems commonly encountered in practice by accountants seeking to rely on them. The paper also explains how values of-mineral properties are established in company balance sheets and why these often differ, quite validly, from fair market values.

The concept of rigid or yielding bolts is discussed based upon support requirements for excavations of equivalent geomechanical behaviour. The concept of equivalent geomechanical behaviour is introduced for comparison purpose where the rock mass properties are varied for a given depth (stress) so that the deformation of the roof without any support remains constant = 300mm. A simple experimental theoretical analysis for a uniform stress field acting on an axi-symmetric excavation is conducted to establish roof bolt requirements under different conditions such as width of a given excavation, time of setting of support etc. Results are presented in graphical forms.
