Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

A case study of migration of a paper factory fluid wastes, on the distance of 5 km from an underground disposal site to an ore mine is presented. The ore mine in question, situated in SW Poland is pumping 3.5 m3/s (ca 300 000 m3/day) of groundwater, producing a cone of depression about 150 m deep and several kilometers wide. The migration of wastes (pollutant) occurs within the carbonate karstic aquifer of Triassic age. The aquifer is about 100m thick and is characterized by the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity equal to 8 m/day on the average. The results of systematic measurements carried out for 13 years enabled to estimate the mean breakthrough curve of the pollutant. On this basis and taking into account the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity as well as the mean hydraulic gradient between the disposal site and the ore mine, the migration parameters of the polluting material, i.e. the real flow velocity, the effective porosity and the longitudinal disper- sivity have been calculated. As the measurements considered a long migration distance of the pollutant, the obtained hydrodynamic dispersion constant (dispersivity), in the authors opinion, is reliable enough to be applied for regional groundwater calculations, regardless of the "scale effect".

There is currently in the mining industry, as well as in other industries, a movement seeking to increase investments in decarbonisation processes to help combat global warming. Among some initiatives taken is replacing diesel-powered mobile equipment in the mines with electricity-powered equipment, such as electric off-highway trucks or even belt conveyors in the mining operation. Samarco is a Brazilian mining company that since its conception has used a conveyor belt mining system in its mining operation, using only a small number of trucks to complement the mining process. This mining process that combines conveyor belts and trucks has brought environmental gains for the company since the environmental impact of conventional truck-only mining is greater than that of the combined system. To measure these gains, a medium-term mining plan was developed in which two fleet scenarios were detailed. One scenario contemplated a high level of detail of belt mining seeking its maximisation, while the other considered the operation performed 100 per cent by trucks, eliminating the use of conveyor belts. Through the comparison of these two scenarios, it was possible to make an inventory of atmospheric emissions and greenhouse gases for each one of them considering data such as types of equipment, diesel consumption, total distance travelled and energy consumption. The results showed that the fleet scenario with conveyor belts results in periods with up to 15 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions and 37 per cent less total particulates compared with the truck-only scenario. Therefore, the results confirm the environmental benefits of the method and the need to look for ways to even expand it in future operations through a study to identify the potential areas in the long-term mining plan.

In open pit mining, it is common that the bottleneck to productivity and profit lies in the truck-shovel mining operation, especially as strip ratios and mining intensity have increased with resource depletion and advances in mining equipment capabilities. This paper outlines a study of truck-shovel productivity using a new proprietary discrete event simulation platform for truck-shovel operations called MineDES. The study will specifically address the issue of whether truck queuing at shovels should be considered productive or not, and how mining engineers can determine the optimal truck fleet size for specific operational configurations.The MineDES simulation platform will be described and illustrated, highlighting the features that make it an appropriate tool for conducting the experiments at the heart of this study. The study encompasses a set of experiments, consisting of a number of simple truck-shovel operational scenarios for a benchmark open pit mining operation, which are simulated using MineDES. Each experiment is designed to highlight different factors, which are most important in calculating the ideal truck fleet size and for understanding the marginal productive impact of each additional truck added to the fleet. The scenarios will principally address the issues of how different types and levels of unscheduled equipment downtime and process variation, combined with the traffic delays/congestion arising in more intense mining operations, will affect productivity. The results of the experiments are interpreted using a simple fit-for-purpose cost and revenue model in order to highlight the indicative cost of over- or under-trucked configurations.The study has found that the optimal fleet size that maximises productivity and value will, in the presence of even small process variation, lead to non-zero trucks queuing at shovels on average. As process variations and unscheduled downtime events increase in the truck-shovel system, the required fleet size to optimise productivity and value increases. Gunnedah, in north-western New South Wales (NSW), including the town, the surrounding Liverpool Plains and the Pilliga forests to the west, are currently the subject of intense mining interest for coal and coal seam gas. Achieving positive outcomes for koala conservation on mined landscapes will require a sound grasp of koala ecology; and local knowledge of koala movements, tree choice and associated threats to the continued survival of koalas, particularly roadkill from increased mining infrastructure. This requires a research-oriented approach to testing ideas applicable to the long-term survival of koala populations. Our recent koala research in NSW has shown that, in 2006, Gunnedah had the largest koala population west of the Great Dividing Range, and the only population in NSW that was expanding. That prompted us to instigate a detailed study in 2008 - 2011 to determine, inter alia, whether the koalas were using trees that were planted in the 1990s to cope with rising soil salinity. Our GPS-tracking has shown that regrowth trees as young as ten years old can attract koalas. In 2009, the demise of about a quarter of the local koala population from an intense heatwave gave us a foretaste of how habitat and climate change interrelate at the landscape scale. We are now examining the optimal combinations of tree choice, and patch size and shape, for habitat restoration. This will be relevant to local coal seam gas and coal mine proposals, and ongoing mitigation actions. The Senate enquiry of September 2011 on the koala and demonstrated the intense public interest in the survival of this iconic species. Its subsequent listing for Queensland and NSW under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 further raises its profile and obligations for management of koalas and their habitat. It will take considerable effort to manage the Liverpool Plains koala population for the next 50 years in the face of extensive land-use changes from mining, and the attendant threats from road kill, compounded by the new threat of climate change manifesting itself as an increased frequency of heatwaves and more severe droughts. This paper describes the research that underpins these conclusions, identifies some of the research approaches needed, argues for working strategically now, rather than try to patch up matters after the event, and presents a set of guides for environmental plantings. The decline of ore grades on land, increasing demand and high prices for various minerals have led to an increased interest in mining the deep ocean sea floor. The potential deep ocean reserves are vast and in some circumstances the grades are high enough to consider mining. However, the consequences of such mining are as yet uncertain. This paper will present the results of a comparative assessment of life cycle impacts of deep ocean minerals. Two alternative extraction technologies from different deep ocean resource types were examined and key commodities are considered. Initial results indicate that the energy requirements will be higher than the average land-based resources, but may fall within the range of the deepest terrestrial mines.CITATION:McLellan, B C, 2015. The Gladstone region, as one of the most industrially intense regions in Australia, uses significant quantities of fresh water. Awoonga Dam, situated on the Boyne River, is the only major source of water in the region. The current typical annual usage is 53 GL (Porteous, 2006) and approximately 80 per cent of the water is used by heavy industry (Gladstone Area Water Board, 2004). Until relatively recently, there has been ready and easy access to raw water for industrial use. The recent drought, which resulted in severe water restrictions in 2002 and 2003, emphasised the importance of water for a dominant industrial region like Gladstone. Although now in the process of changing, the typical contractual arrangements in the past have provided little financial incentive for efficient water use. From research undertaken on potential water reuse opportunities, several key questions have emerged related to water management in an industrial region such as Gladstone. This paper highlights these key questions, presents findings from recent regional strategies and assesses the potential for water reuse. Even though there is no clear-cut financial incentive for reusing water, there could be stronger regional and risk mitigation drivers for doing so. Initiatives to incorporate adaptive capacity through collaborative industrial synergies would allow for robustness and resilience in water security, leading to long-term sustainable water management across the Gladstone region.

Coal is a very versatile resource, having variable characteristics and having potential for a wide variety of mar- kets. Australia has extensive deposits of black coal, although they are concentrated mainly in Eastern Australia. Assessments of the currently known reserves are related to the qualities of these reserves. Markets available to black coal fall into the broad groupings of metallurgical, fuel, conversion and miscellaneous markets and the requirements of these markets are related to coal characteristics. Market trends in Australia and on the export market are discussed and projected forward. By the end of this century Australian consumption of black coal could well be 100 million tonnes per annum, and, in the absence of any export restriction, a similar amount is likely to be exported. Currently defined black coal resources in Australia will last at least 600 years at these projected rates of consumption. Although the position appears satisfactory in considering the projected life of the black coal resources, there is a serious lack of detailed information on reserves, mining and preparation yields, quality and possible environmental restrictions. Action is required on three parallel courses: (1) a consistent, systematic and extensive survey of current coal resources in Australia, (2) accelerated exploration activity to define poorly prospected and potential areas, and (3) regular updating and extension of the knowledge of Australia's coal resources. This information would be of tremendous assistance for the formulation of a national energy policy on coal.

The recycling of metals can be very efficient with careful selection of the material being recycled. The volume and value of recycled ferrous scrap has lead to the development of steel mini-mills which in turn has caused major changes to the steel industry. Although much smaller in volume, the recycling of lead is very significant, with battery recycling accounting for 60 per cent of annual world production. This high recycle rate can be attributed to the relatively uniform feed-stock from lead-acid batteries. The recycling rates of other metals are considerably lower due to longer use and non-uniform product usage that results in less efficient segregation and processing. It is clear that recycling of metals has advantages but its sustainability is uncertain. What are the key benefits of metal recycling? Metal recycling has technical, economic and social impacts. It is relatively easy to assess recycling on a technical basis, but the social impacts are harder to evaluate. This paper examines some of the issues in evaluating the sustainability of metal recycling.

Ashton Mining Limited is the operator of two wholly-owned gold mine/mill complexes at Laverton and Leonora. In addition, Ashton owns 43% of the Bardoc Joint Venture mine/mill complex, which is operated by Aberfoyle Pty Limited. All three of these operations are located in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia (Figure 1). At Laverton, milling capacity is in the order of 1 million tonnes per year in 3 mills (Duketon 200,000 tpa, Cork Tree Well 650,000 tpa and Craiggiemore 150,000 tpa). These mills service a distance of 80 km, from Baneygo in the north to Craiggiemore in the south. Mineral tenements cover a 150 km long stretch of a series of sub-parallel mineralised structures. At Leonora, the Harbour Lights mill is designed to treat 750,000 tpa of sulphide ore, and has treated oxide ores at an annualised rate of over 1 million tonnes/year. The mill is supported by several tenement blocks that lie within a 50 km trucking radius of the mill. The most important of these is the Mertondale tenement block, which covers approximately 25km of the Mertondale Shear Zone.

"Automation is a common goal within the coal industry for reasons such as efficiency, reliability and sustainability. However, it requires standards and frameworks so business systems can communicate effectively. Automation of sample analysis processes has been difficult to establish due to a lack of direct business system communication between commercial laboratories and mining companies. This has resulted in manual procedures that have contributed to problems relating to analysis instructions, sample identification, results formats and visibility of status.These problems result in loss of data and confidence in data validity, loss of process efficiency and inability to react to issues. An Australian Coal Association Research Program project (Evans, Armstrong and Arboleda, 2014) has addressed these issues through the Coal Quality Data Exchange methodology for direct business system communication between coalminers and commercial laboratories to optimise the transfer of coal quality data.The benefits to the coalminer of the framework are:increased clarity and auditability of what is being sent to the laboratory and what was requestedreduced potential for error introduced through manual transcription tasksincreased speed of loading of analytical results to the customer Geoscientific Information Management Systemimproved turnaround time for analytical resultsincreased knowledge about what took place in the laboratory with respect to the determination of the analytical resultsincreased visibility of the status of a ‘work order’. The benefits to the technology companies and commercial laboratories is a common framework on which to build a sustainable solution that gets away from the multitude of formats catered for today and time consuming manual processes. The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port KKembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and -South Western Coalfields. The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal. Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each sear. The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Sean in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin Colleries.

Geostatistics - a tool used by geologists and mine planning engineers to estimate grades and rapidly evaluate alternative mining strategies has reached an advanced stage of development for the silver-lead-zinc orebodies at Isa and Hilton Mines. Geostatistics has been used for over a decade in the massive copper orebodies but the stratiform lead-zinc orebodies are much more complex and provided a completely different set of challenges. Recent increases in computer processing speed and power provided by the Integrated Mine Planning System (IMPS) has aided the development of the geostatistics package. Also the formation of a project team and the subsequent in-house development which has drawn together the expertise of geologists, engineers and system analysts has contributed significantly to the success of the project.The most important feature of any approach to modelling the lead-zinc orebodies is that the kriging search must consider estimate and sample points according to their positions relative to bedding surfaces. By transforming co-ordinates as perpendicular offsets from a plane representing the local strike and dip, it is possible to elongate the ellipsoidal influence to parallel bedding. By interactively modelling surfaces using CAD facilities and then specifying these surfaces as 'hard' or 'soft' boundaries, the geologist has complete control over the kriging process.

Systematic field evaluation of known gold and clay occurrences in South Korea has led to the recognition and discovery of both high and low sulphidation gold-silver epithermal systems. These are associated with Cretaceous acid-intermediate volcanic centres in the southern parts of the peninsula. The high sulphidation deposits such as Seongsan and Kohung are characterised by pervasive silica-alunite-dickite-pyrophyllite alteration with anomalous arsenic geochemical signatures. Gold mineralisation is associated with fine grained marcasite and pyrite. A low sulphidation quartz vein system observed at the Tongyoung mine comprises multistage colloform banded quartz-carbonate assemblages, with minor manganese and base metals. Gold and silver occur as electrum and tellurium minerals. Some deposits such as Gasado and Dogcheon display both high and low sulphidation alteration assemblages. Early pervasive silica-alunite-pyrophyllite alteration caps formed by acid fluids with a significant magmatic component, occur above cryptocrystalline colloform banded vein systems. The quartz vein stage hosts the precious metal mineralisation and appears to have been deposited by later neutral fluids generated in part through mixing with meteroric water.

Artificial support can be used to improve wall stability in open pit mines. This is examined for a particular case where the factor of safety for a slope is kept constant by using artificial support as the slope angle is increased. It is demonstrated that the savings in excavation generally exceed the cost of support. However, in order to correctly judge the eco- nomic impact of artificial support on the project, all the elements relat- ing to the use of artificial support must be taken in account.

I feel a little like the Parson delivering his Sunday Sermon, chastizing his parishioners for not coming to Church. Those who need to hear me are absent.Nevertheless, I hope that if you agree with what I am about to say you will go forth and spread the word.We often hear of the impact mining has on the community. I prefer tonight to deal with the impact some community attitudes have on mining, and I want to point out that the results of these attitudes rebound to the detriment of our society. I want to deal particularly with regulation, taxation, and proflts.In a civilization whose standard of living is essentially dependent on an adequate and reliable supply of cheap metals and fuels, it should be evident to Blind Freddie that mining must be encouraged.I must express concern at the constraints inflicted on the mining industry by our community. We tend to blame Government for our difficulties, but we must recognize that Government acts merely as agent for the community. It is fair to say that in a free society, if Government actions do not reflect the demands of the electorate, then it doesn't stay the Government. It is important though for Government, in framing its policies, to ensure that it is not unduly influenced by the loud voices of minority groups.The people of our nation have every right to demand that our industry meet certain criteria to be allowed to operate. We all wish to live in a healthy and congenial environment, and to have our individual comforts protected. It is essential, however, that the community realizes that its demands on the mining industry are affecting Australia's prosperity.Each new regulation and each new tax or impost has its effect on investment, employment, and national revenue. Restraints result in an increase in costs which in turn raises the minimum value of a mineral deposit which is economically mineable. It results in minerals, which could be mined under more favourable circumstances, remaining in the ground, perhaps lost for ever.

SIROFRAG is a computer-based imaging system that quantifies the post-blast rock fragment size distribution in a muckpile in a mine environment. Improvements in blast performance and blast modelling are being hampered by a lack of a quick and objective method to evaluate the major result of the blast: the fragment size distribution. This is usually done by hand digitising muckpile photographs: a labour intensive and tedious process. SIROFRAG is being developed to quickly, cheaply and objectively provide this information. SIROFRAG is based on active stereo image analysis. It uses a light stripe to illuminate a muckpile and a pair of video cameras to determine the 3D nature of the scanned objects. The imaging system is based on a novel prototype scanning projector that allows images to he captured in full daylight. The Microsoft Windows based software controls the projector and interprets the captured images to provide a size distribution of exposed rock fragments.

As a result of cheap Maui gas and plentiful hydro-electricity, over the past few decades New Zealand has enjoyed some of the cheapest energy of any OECD country. The situation is changing; at best we are facing some radical changes in energy use, at worst we are facing a crisis resulting from the following:   Cause 1: Maui gas will be exhausted by 2012. Distorted pricing and supply contracts; resulted in Huntly Power Station, a coal mine mouth generator running on 70 per cent Maui gas until very recently!   Cause 2: Investment in new generating capacity (and transmission) is woefully inadequate; as a result hydro lake levels are being continually pushed to the limits.   Cause 3: Distorted thinking is everywhere, for example; æWe will find more cheap gasÆ. æGas is clean û coal is dirtyÆ. Hot air  û ægreen alternatives such as wind generation will save usÆ. æNo NuclearÆ. The outcomes of the distorted thinking will be price increases, then shortages (there is nothing like "black-outs" to focus national thinking) and finally recession.   But what can NZ do? - Mine Coal. Coal jump-started the industrial revolution, it can provide the transition to post-gas and oil. NZ has the second highest reserves of coal per capita in the world, yet we use less that any other country with significant coal reserves. Our exports of our best coal have increased threefold, yet out own consumption has remained static at about 1-1.5 Mtpa for the last 30 years. Our coal is NZ owned and inexpensive relative to other energy sources, even allowing for infrastructure and environmental costs.   What can we do? We as mining professionals can promote informed responsible development and investment in the country's mining and energy business. We can galvanise public opinion on issues such as æunbundlingÆ our entire energy chain from mine-to generator-through transmission, even if the nuclear issue has to wait! With oil above US$70/bbl substitution is feasible. For individuals, there is always solar!

The coal left in the goaf is easily submerged by groundwater damage. During the mining process of the underlying coal seam, it is necessary to drain the water in the overlying goaf. The coal sample is prone to spontaneous combustion after being soaked in water and air-dried. To explore the effect of micro-functional group transformation of water-immersed coal samples on the spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal samples during the low-temperature oxidation process. Using the experimental method of infrared spectroscopy, the migration law of special functional groups under different oxygen concentrations of water-soaked coal samples was analysed. By means of thermal analysis, the endothermic and exothermic properties of the functional groups in the water-soaked coal samples were studied. The results show that: the higher the oxygen concentration, the more oxygen-containing functional groups in the water-soaked coal sample, compared with the 18 per cent oxygen concentration, the 14 per cent oxygen concentration has a small increase, and the chain length is shortened. The temperature increase together with the oxygen concentration content determines the functional group content, the pyrolysis process produces some functional groups. The lower the oxygen concentration, endothermic rate decreases and endothermic temperature increases, the higher the ignition temperature of coal oxy-combustion, the lower the total heat release, the higher the burnout temperature, and the faster the oxygen-absorbing weight gain and the conversion of functional groups. Below 14 per cent oxygen concentration, the oxidative combustion process will be greatly reduced. The results provide a theoretical basis for preventing long-term water-soaked coal body oxidative spontaneous combustion in shallow buried coal seams.

The terms measured resources and proven reserves denote the highest level of estimation confidence in all of the major classification schemes. But what do they really bring to today’s project or mine with respect to production planning and expectations? Initial reserve declaration does not need measured resources, just indicated resources. Economic viability of a project is assessed on total reserves with nary a bonus for the amount of proven reserves. Production plans are based on grade and tonnage goals that may only coincidently correspond to proven reserves. So are the measured and proven categories still relevant? Historically, and almost exclusively in underground mines, companies only allowed mining in areas of proven reserves. Some companies still follow that philosophy. But many others will mine a mixture of probable and proven reserves without hesitation. Also what of the undeveloped project in a new district – what is to be made of their declared measured resources and proven reserves? Measured resources are commonly set either by some type of proximity to data scheme or a matter of ‘feel’ based on the qualified person’s experience. The parameters for reserve conversion focus on the project as a whole and then a portion becomes classified as proven reserves almost solely based on whether the resource category is measured. So should the mining industry continue to use these categories of resource and reserve classification? This paper will present arguments about making these categories once again more relevant. A more disciplined usage of these categories may re-introduce their relevancy in public disclosures of resources and reserves. As well a more consistent usage in operations may lead to increased confidence in managing production targets and costs.
