There are a number of mineral processing operations which produce at some point a stream of hot particulates. At today's energy prices it becomes important to recover the energy held in the hot particulates. Sometimes it is convenient to use gas, e.g. in air pre- heating, and this will be appropriate in some circumstances. There are cases where it would be very useful if energy in the hot processed particles could be exchanged to the cold feed solids. This can be achieved within appropriate limitations by countercurrent heat exchangers comprised of parallel channels which contain, alternately, fluidized solids of 'hot' and 'cold' streams respectively. A pilot- plant has been built. Some calculations relating to industrial application will be Presented.

Open pit mines in the Yilgam Craton have unique hydrogeological characteristics resulting from a combination of geology, mineralisation and the complex and extended development of the regolith. The principal features of this geological relationship are:ò deep and complex multi-stage development of the weathering profile; ò steeply dipping rock layering;ò supergene enrichment; andò mining across the regolith/rock interface.These features result in large changes in permeability horizontally across rock layers; vertically through the weathering profile and along-strike in association with mineralisation and the mineralised Structure.

Pre-splitting for smooth highwall formation is conducted in around 75 per cent of surface coal operations within Australia. The CMTE (Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment) in conjunction with BHPAC (BHP Australia Coal) initiated a project to look at pre-splitting and to investigate the notching of blastholes for fracture plane control. The notching was specifically for pre-split initiation and also for discing of the toe of the production holes to minimise coal loss from the top of the coal seam. There are currently a number of factors which are driving the introduction of new pre-splitting technologies and products. The first is the ever increasing bench height being employed in strip mines which require a higher quality wall with less blast damage to maintain stability. Currently depths of 55 metres are common place with depths of 70 - 80 metres fast approaching. The second factor is the introduction of new technologies or methods which require a high quality highwall produced, eg highwall mining. This paper discusses the current state-of-the-art in pre-splitting and the main issues facing successful pre-splitting in the future. The use of a blasthole notching technology to promote fracturing along the pre-split line is also analysed. The review indicates that most pre-splitting challenges in the future can be addressed through better use and developments of current drill and blast technology. It is also concluded that a blasthole notching technique may find niche applications in improving final walls within a surface coal mine, especially where a high quality wall is required. The notched blasthole method may also allow pre-splitting in ground conditions and adverse rock structure which currently cannot be pre-split by existing technology.

Many young mining engineers do not consider consulting as a possible job, believing that many years of working on-site is required to achieve practical experience, develop expertise and acquire industry contacts. However, mining consultancies employ engineers with varying levels of experience, including part-time university students, graduates and engineers who are relatively new to the industry. This paper outlines the role of a young engineer in a large mining consultancy and the benefits to both the consultancy and the client of having a mix of consultants with a diverse range of experience. From the authorÆs perspective, the work experience, lifestyle and rewards of mine consulting are compared to site based work, including a discussion on whether consulting is able to offer the professional development that a young engineer needs.

During underground mining, rock mass changes can occur as a function of the mining sequence and excavation processes. Mining-induced rock mass damage can occur due to redistribution of static stresses and the application of dynamic stresses from blasting and seismic activity. These rock mass changes can result in a degradation of strength of the bulk rock mass and the remaining rock surrounding existing excavations. Rock mass damage near existing excavations which lead to excavation-scale instabilities such as rock fall, excavation closure, or visible rock mass fracturing can detrimentally affect the safety and profitability of mining operations.The focus of the current work was the prediction and assessment of damage to mine infrastructure occurring in relation to the blasting of a sublevel open stope. The study case involved a 60kt stope located in a highly-competent rock mass at a large Australian sublevel open stoping mine. The mine infrastructure of interest for investigation included local stope access development, critical access and haulage development crossing a regional-scale fault, an explosives storage magazine and a ventilation return air raise. The methods used to predict or assess the blast-induced damage to each infrastructure element in response to stope extraction were:- intact rock strength testing,- discontinuity mapping,- linear-elastic static stress modelling,- blast-damage mapping,- near-field blast vibration monitoring and analysis,- geophysical assessment using inferred stiffness and wave velocity methods, and- post-extraction void assessment.The results of the detailed blast damage prediction and assessment program at the mine site have been discussed by the primary author elsewhere (Fleetwood, 2010). The current work will address blast-induced damage to mine infrastructure as a result of extraneous blasting vibrations from stope production blasting. A method for predicting the amplification of excavation surface motions from reflecting body waves will be discussed as well as the results of damage mapping around the study stope. The results of the damage mapping program identified blast-induced damage that occurred to the surface of the explosives storage magazine and local stope access development. No damage was observed at the main fault crossing or return air raise where higher vibration amplitudes were measured or predicted.

The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. The high addition of lead nitrate would certainly make cyanide destruction easier; consequently reducing the effluent treatment costs and making possible to meet the discharge regulations criteria.CITATION:DeschOnes, G and Fulton, M, 2013. Carbon rich graphite deposits found in Sri Lanka are of inorganic origin and they occur as narrow steeply dipping veins. The vein width of these deposits varies from a few centimetres to metres, with an average vein thickness of 1 m. It is believed that the carbon rich fluid intruded into fracture zones under high pressure and the temperature has crystallised into graphite. This process has also generated many minuscule graphite veins centred on main mineralisation, which has reduced the host rock overall rock mass rating. These discontinuities could also be considered as joints with graphite infill. Graphite mining at Bogala Mines, Sri Lanka is a unique example of narrow vein mining faced with numerous wall stability issues resulting from weak graphite infilled joints.The Bogala vein type graphite orebody has an average vein width of 1 m. Overhand cut-and-fill mining method is used for stoping. The stope consists of two boundary winzes for material handling, access and ventilation. Mining is done on the strike of the vein and the average mining slice height is 2 m. A void to the height of one mined slice is left below the mining level during mining. Waste rock resulting from vein blasting and mine development is dropped into this void as fill rock. Any void height left greater than a single slice height will increase stresses in the stoping zone. This will increase formation of rock blocks and their effective separation from wall rocks. Split miniscule veins occurring around main mineralisation intensifies rock block formation in an environment of mining induced stress release. Consequently, any rock blocks sliding into stopes on graphite infilled joints will behave under constant normal stiffness (CNS) conditions and their shear strength will converge rapidly towards remoulded shear strength of graphite alone. Unlike with general infill deposited in joints, graphite has a very low friction angle and with its slippery nature, a small thickness may affect in great deal to reduce joint shear strength.In addition to immediate filling of excavated voids, controlled vein blasting and spot bolting have improved mine safety. Furthermore, rock bolts connected to each other through iron plates and anchored to anchor bolts installed in non-fractured solid rock are practiced to stabilise rock falls and wedge failures in narrow vein graphite mining. THIS paper is not intended to be a detailed description of the lead, smelting plant at Cockle Creek, as this has been covered in previous papers for the Institute in 1918, Proceedings No. 31, by other members of the staff; but the idea is to give some of the practices and conditions peculiar to these works, also to give some experiments carried out and the conclusions arrived at. Unfortunately, owing to the closing down of the smelting and refinery plant at these works, sone of the experiments could not be carried to a more definite and commercial basis, but they are given in the hope that they may be of interest to members, and may perhaps suggest further thought along the lines indicated.ROASTING AND SINTERINGThe greater part of the ore treated at these works came from the Central mine, Broken Hill, but, in addition, a large quantity was purchased from other parts of New South Wales and from Tasmania. This purchased ore was seldom received in the form of a concentrate, but initially in its crude state, and therefore had to be crushed. I began my interest in sample preparation when I joined the Institute of Nuclear Sciences in 1962. I worked in the fields of rock dating and stable isotope geochemistry. Preparing a sample could take several days and the analysis took another day or more, so great care was taken with each sample. In 1968 I changed to mineral exploration analysis and was surprised to find that there was much less care in how a sample was taken and prepared. Virtually every sample was processed in the same way. In the use of ring and puck mills, Australia and New Zealand were among the world leaders. It took another ten years before labs in North America changed over from disc mills. In 1975, my partner and I divided our business into two parts. He took the laboratory into his consulting laboratory business and I took the small business that we had started, making ring and puck mills. For the next six years I was RocklabsÆs only employee. In the 1980s and 1990s, sampling specialists like Francis Pitard and Dominique Francois-Bongarcon began to make a difference in the understanding of what constitutes good sampling and preparation practice. They and others took courses on the new concepts of Sampling Theory, as developed by Pierre Gy. The desire for better procedures lead to the development of new machines, including the big bowl pulverisers from Australia, jaw crushers that could crush finely like our Boyd Crusher, rotating dividers of new designs and flow-through ring and puck mills. Other machines did not fare so well, including rolls crushers, cone crushers and hammer mills.

This paper deals specifically with block cave undercut aims strategies, methodologies and management to avoid the problems indicated above.

Three separate and unconfined aquifers occur in the Hilton area, named relative to position in relation to ore horizons: Footwall Aquifer in the east; Ore-Zone Aquifer within the ore-bearing Urquhart Shales; and the Hangingwall Aquifer in the west.It is the on-going strategy it Hilton to drain the Ore-Zone Aquifer which occupies structurally- and sulphide-controlled leached zones in the steeply west dipping strata. The aquifer affects considerable ore reserves to 480 m below the surface. Dewatering began in 1976, and is essentially completed to 4 level (240 m below surface). Dewatering efforts are now based on 8 level (480 m below surface).

The mill area of PT Freeport Indonesia is located in a valley surrounded by steep natural slope, characterised by extreme topography with mountains rising to above 4500 m within 100 km from the seashore. The valleys are deeply embedded into the mountainous terrain and bordered by steep natural slopes. Vertical or overhanging lime walls are interrupted by steep vegetated screen sections containing accumulated loose material from weathering processes and ancient rock falls and/or debris flows/avalanches. The climate can be best described as alpine subtropical with an accumulated rainfall of more than 5000 mm per year. Occasional snowfalls and superficial freezing above 4000 m elevation leads to heavy weathering of the superficial rock layers and along open joints and fractures. The mill area is a crucial and strategic infrastructure for the entire mining operation which is best characterised as a high density industrial area with facilities including water tanks, power generators, crusher, and concentrating facilities including office buildings and workshops as well as access tracks to the underground mining blocks. Considering the local topography, the restricted space conditions and the number of technical installations, the facilities are likely to be affected and highly vulnerable to rock fall from the surrounding slopes. In order to minimise the rock fall hazard three rock fence barriers area were constructed at the mill area. The 7.5 rock fence barriers were designed with the maximum capacity of 5000 kJ. These are the largest capacity of rock fall barriers ever constructed in Indonesia. The total length of the barriers for the three locations was 126 m. The biggest challenge of this project was the construction of the barrier at West Gulley, which was constructed at 300 m above ground level. For this site, construction access was undertaken using helicopter. This presentation discusses the design of the mitigation structures as well as the construction approach and stages of the barriers. Please note: This paper is abstract only.

Northern Australia leads in world-class mineral deposits' is a bold statement. First there must be a starting point. Land north of the Tropic of Capricorn (23¦ 26' 5") will be regarded as Northern Australia covering nearly 40 per cent of the land surface of Australia. As opposed to land south of the Tropic of Capricorn, it should be regarded as Tropical Northern Australia and for the sake of brevity, (TNA) Refer Figure 1. Apart from the tyranny of distance from centres of power and population in the temperate zone, it suffered in the past from the belief that the tropics are unsuited for European workers and from the lack of infrastructure. Outstanding mineral deposits of iron, base metals, gold and diamonds, discovered and developed in the past three decades, provided the substance for the title. There are many world-class mines producing and there are mineral deposits neutralised through Government policy. TNA can maintain its lead in world-class mineral deposits provided Government policy will stop partitioning the land and decreasing that available for exploration. Let's look at what we have that is world-class. In Western TNA iron ore deposits at Paraburdoo, Mt Tom Price, Marandoo, gold at Telfer, diamonds at Argyle. In central TNA uranium at Ranger and Jabiluka, lead-zinc-silver at McArthur River, gold at the Tanami, manganese at Groote Eylandt and bauxite at Gove. In eastern TNA Mt Isa, Hilton, Century zinc-lead, bauxite at Weipa, gold at Kidston, Mt Leyshon, magnesite at Yamba and coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Those mines or deposits stand out yet are only an indication of the numerous lesser mines and of mineral deposits depending for development on market demand and/or changes in Government policy, eg 'The Three Mines' policy. Very large areas of mineral rich structures in the western, central and eastern parts of TNA are concealed below flat lying comparatively young unmineralised sediments. The Great Artisan basin sediments in eastern TNA can and do host oil shale and non metallic minerals. Nearly 40 per cent of western TNA is covered by the Great Sandy Desert. The Canning Track, with a series of 54 wells, was constructed by surveyor Alfred Canning in 1908 - 1910 with great difficulty. It extends 1700 kilometres from Halls Creek in the north to the gold town of Wiluna in the south, through the Great and Little Sandy Deserts. Gold explorers are following favourable structures extending to the north east below the sediments and sand hills covering the track. Half of central TNA's mineral structures are concealed by the Tanami desert and the Cretaceous sediments covering the pastoral regions of the Barkly Tableland and the Daly Waters to Top Springs pastoral areas. The Georgina Basin in the south eastern section is part of the concealment.

Vertical crater retreat mining is being used at Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated, Limited for pillar recovery between previously mined and filled stopes. In order to increase productivity in the older lead lode areas of the mine, particularly in the lower grade sections around the keel of the orebody, score form of longhole stoping was considered necessary.Due to poor ground conditions in the country rock surrounding the ore and the requirement to provide sane wall support during mining, primary VCR mining has been utilised in these areas.At Zinc Corporation, several stopes have thus far been mined by a hybrid longhole stripping - VCR method.

Reflectance spectroscopy is now an established technique for mineral exploration and ore characterisation. The efficacy of the technique as a tool to characterise the main iron ore and gangue mineralogy at African Minerals Ltd’s Simbili iron ore deposit in north-central Sierra Leone was tested through reflectance spectroscopic analysis of 13 000 pulped drill reserve samples using CSIRO’s HyLogger-1™ system. Specifically, integration of reflectance spectral data with more traditional methods of analysis, such as geochemical analysis and Satmagan measurements, characterised the mineralogy (ie hematite versus goethite) of the oxidised ore at Simbili, quantified the Al associated with goethite and hematite and evaluated the distribution of the main gangue minerals – kaolinite and gibbsite. Relative changes in the Fe2+/Fe3+-bearing oxide and silicate mineralogy, based on mineral indices derived from reflectance spectroscopic measurements, appeared well-related to changes in the ore profile mineralogy consistent with the main ore types identified at Simbili, as representative of an oxidised banded iron formation sequence. Spectral calibration models, developed from a well-characterised training set of mineral mixtures, representative of the oxidised ore zone mineralogy were used to quantify the distribution of Al associated with kaolinite and gibbsite and the iron oxides, goethite and hematite. Combining these mineral spectral parameters with compositional data enabled the differentiation of Al-substituted goethite and hematite and resulted in the identification of low Al-bearing, or ‘clean’, goethite and hematite from high Al-bearing, or ‘dirty’, goethite and hematite. Spectral quantification of the iron oxide Al composition provides a far more rapid means of quantifying the Al substitution in iron oxides at the deposit scale compared to traditional techniques such as X-ray diffraction analysis. It also enables a level of volumetric characterisation and the potential for large-scale (ie three-dimensional) mapping, which was not previously possible with other techniques. The potential of the technique was also highlighted when mapping the distribution of the main Al-bearing contaminants (gibbsite and kaolinite) identified in the oxidised ore zone at Simbili. Delineation of such zones provides a guide to managing the most appropriate processing options (ie upgrade potential) within a mineralogical framework. Three-dimensional modelling of the gangue phase distribution may also allow the mapping of lithological and/or structural controls that may be prevalent at Simbili. This work highlights the value in the application of HyLogging™ technology for rapid resource characterisation, particularly for volumetric identification and mapping the distribution of both the economic and gangue phases, which otherwise would be difficult to achieve. As such, the technique can provide a fast and inexpensive means to evaluate ore and gangue mineralogy at the deposit scale and provide a first-pass assessment of the mineralogy and compositional attributes, with the potential to better predict ore metallurgical properties.CITATION:Wells, M A and Ramanaidou, E R, 2015. The zinc-lead-silver mineral resource at Lady Loretta ranks amongst the worldÆs richest when measured in terms of in situ metal grades. However, the project remains undeveloped 28 years after its discovery in 1969. The primary obstacle to development has been the fine and complex grain structure of its ores, which make flotation concentration inefficient even with fine grinding. The size and remote location of the deposit have also hindered exploitation. BUKA planned to directly fume the volatile target metals from the ore when it acquired the project. Intensive, post-acquisition modeling showed the innovative processing route to be uneconomic, notwithstanding high metals recovery and low waste content in fume product. Progressive modifications and supplements to the underlying fuming process enhanced economics and resulted in a new mine-to-metal processing route for zinc-lead-silver ores. The proprietary, three-stage BUKA Zinc Process offers technical, economic and environmental advantages. It is expected to find widespread application in the treatment of ores and residues. However, neither continued R&D nor application to Lady LorettaÆs currently delineated resource can be justified under prevailing market conditions. The objectives and results of each step in the process development sequence are outlined with reference to their impact on the commercial viability of the Lady Loretta project.

The Northparkes, Endeavour 26 orebody is a porphyry copperûgold deposit and comprises a moderately to well jointed rock mass characterised by gypsum veining, the intensity of which decreases with depth. The top 480 metres of the orebody is currently being mined by block caving, the undercut dimensions measuring 196 metres in length by 180 metres in width. Continuous caving was never achieved after the completion of the undercut thus cave inducement techniques were sought to maintain caving so as to safely sustain production. The use of hydraulic fracturing as a cave inducement tool was successfully trialled in December 1997 using existing exploration boreholes located midway up the current lift. Subsequent fracturing campaigns have enjoyed various degrees of success and have yielded in excess of seven million tonnes of ore at a significantly lower cost than conventional cave inducement techniques. Monitoring of both the hydraulic fracture system and the rock mass response has provided considerable insight into the geometry, growth and influence of hydraulic fracture networks above the Northparkes block cave, and has initiated additional research into the use of hydraulic fracturing in other mining methods.

As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

A nine-month investigation was conducted into the effect on coke quality and blast furnace operation of the addition of bentonite and southern coal to the northern coal fed to the coke ovens at the Newcastle steelworks.Additions of 0·3 per cent bentonite or 25 per cent southern coal to the northern coal increased the coke strength from 15-20 A.S.T.M. stability to 25-30 A.S.T.M. stability. It is likely that improved mixing and blending facilities would, in both cases, give a coke of over 30 A.S.T.M. stability.For the same coke strength, the use of 0 3 per cent imported Wyoming bentonite was considerably cheaper than the use of 25 per cent southern coal, but the use of Australian bentonite promises the same coke strength for still lower costs. Other additives such as coke breeze, charcoal, iron ore fines, and certain other finely divided materials, gave relatively minor improvements in coke quality.There appeared to be sufficient improvement in blast furnace operation and production to justify full scale addition of bentonite to improve coke quality, although other variables, particularly iron ore physical quality, overshadowed on many occasions the effect of coke quality.
