Since gold was first discovered, mining development in the West Australian goldfields has been heavily dependent on the location of groundwater both for potable and mineral processing supplies . The location of adequate and economic sources of water has been a constant challenge to both explorers and developers throughout the history of the goldfields. The provision of a piped supply from Mundaring in 1903 greatly alleviated pressure on scarce resources, lowered mining costs and permitted the orderly development of infrastructure. However, increases in the demand for water resulting from new mineral discoveries over the past three decades has led to renewed pressures for more local supplies to be established. Wide-ranging groundwater exploration took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's, also, more recently, in support of intensified gold exploration. The collation and interpretation of the hydrogeological data from the whole goldfields region indicates that despite a low mean annual rainfall of between 180 and 350 mm, quite marked differences exist between the rates of groundwater recharge in different parts of the area, In general, these can be shown to diminish in a southerly direction contrary to a trend towards increases in annual rainfall. Recharge rates are related mainly to differences in rock weathering pattern, geological structure and physiography. The same differences have controlled the pattern of groundwater salinity and the magnitude of groundwater storages associated with the palaeodrainages. In the vicinity of the northern and western watersheds with the Gascoyne, the superficial sediments tend to be thin, may have calcrete in the section and contain moderate storages of brackish or even fresh water. This contrasts with the lower regions of the palaeodrainages where calcrete is absent and deeper erosion has permitted the accumulation of relatively large thicknesses of fine-grained sediments which are saturated with hypersaline water and constitute substantial storages. Account must be taken of these characteristics if water supply sources are to be optimised to meet the growing demands for groundwater in the region.

Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. Trojan Nickel Mine is the largest producer of Ni, Cu and Co in Zimbabwe. The mine has operated a nickel flotation concentrator and base metal refinery continuously since 1969, creating 28 million tonnes of sulfide bearing tailings, five million tonnes of permanent waste rock and about seven million tonnes of smelter slag. Exposure of the sulfide bearing minerals renders them susceptible to oxidation in the presence of water and oxygen, resulting in acidic solutions with elevated concentrations of total dissolved solids, sulfate, metals and residual flotation chemicals in various waters draining from the mine site. These pollutants pose a direct threat to the environment and human health, and understanding their deportment and behaviour in the various waste streams is essential in the mineÆs environmental objectives to prevent or minimise adverse impacts arising from its operations. A geochemical assessment of the pollutants was carried out to compute a mass balance between the major sources of pollution and the distribution and fate of pollutants in waste streams from the mine site. Waste rock, tailings, surface water, ground water and sediments were sampled, tested and analysed. Mineral composition and water chemistry data show that geochemical reactions are responsible for the release of pollutants from waste rock, tailings and plant spills. Drainage from the mine area is near neutral due to buffering by magnesium carbonates in the fine fraction of the tailings. The natural wetlands that exist downstream of the waste rock and tailings dams are effective in reducing metal loadings to water courses. However, solutes and heavy metals are occasionally released to surface and ground water, when their concentrations peak during the dry season. The results demonstrate the necessity to understand the natural chemical processes that characterise the distribution of pollutants in nature and how such knowledge can be used to develop cost effective methods to remediate pollution in the natural environment.

The practice of recording blasts for quality control purposes has been conducted for several decades. However, at the low frame rates of a standard video camera, essential data is frequently missed as it occurs when the shutter is closed between frames.The use of high-speed video for the research, development and monitoring of the performance of blasting procedures is a well proven but under-utilised practice.The recent development of low cost, easy to use high-speed digital cameras and user friendly software can deliver a capability into mine management as a day-to-day production tool that can greatly improve blasting performance and reduce costs.Digital high-speed video and image analysis software can accurately quantify each blast. Analysis of the images can facilitate the identification of causes of variance from design, geology changes, errors in blast practice and areas of poor performance. The use of high-speed video greatly enhances the audit and review processes so that future blast design can be quickly and appropriately modified to deliver improved blasting performance and reduced costs.The three videos demonstrate the differences between standard video and high-speed video and the detail that can be obtained from them. These videos of open cut blasts can be used to identify blast performance variances. Capturing images at 1000 frames per second allows the analysis on a millisecond timescale where detonator timings, fragmentation, venting, fume generation and flyrock can be accurately identified.CITATION:Adermann, D, Chalmers, D, Martin, C and Wellink, S, 2015. New developments are taking place in the recovery of gold from leached pulps that are based upon the adsorption of the metal cyanide species onto ion exchange resins. Despite the success of several resin-in-pulp pilot plant operations in the Western World and large-scale plants in the former Soviet Union, the process is yet to gain recognition as a viable alternative to the carbon-in-pulp process. An experimental research program has investigated the use of a variety of different types of resins for the recovery of gold, but to-date no resin studied has the desired properties of high selective loading capacity for gold cyanide and a simple inexpensive elution procedure. In addition very little is known concerning the physical strength of resins and their ability to resist shattering due to osmotic shock during cycles of adsorption and elution. The ability of ion exchange resins to enhance the leaching of refractory and re-adsorbing ores has not been investigated. This paper highlights the necessary factors that need to be addressed before commercialisation of ion exchange technology for gold extraction is feasible.

The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

In the current cycle of low commodity prices and rising costs, mine managers continue to focus on optimising mine performance and productivity. A critical component of strengthening performance and productivity is ensuring material is routed correctly and efficiently through the core mine production activities of drilling, blasting and grade control.By the time a blast is planned, an enormous amount of intellectual property has been invested in the exploration, resource development, feasibility studies and mine planning activities. The value of that knowledge is either realised or diminished during mine production. Efficient execution of the process is critical and is reflected by the quality and timeliness of the information produced.Multiple teams are involved in the mining extraction process. These teams are all under time pressure to keep the mine equipment operating. One of the root causes of this pressure is the dependency between the teams. They do not operate in isolation, but are a link in a chain depending on the outcomes of each activity. It is essential communication is efficient so tasks can be completed according to the production schedule. Unfortunately, communication fails when unintegrated systems are used because of:- different teams seeing different data, hence there is not an overall, up-to-date view of progress and priorities- lack of cross-functional visibility of data leading to failure to identify errors in time to address or correct issues- teams tending to be siloed and focusing on their part of the process rather than the overall objective.With different systems used for the parts of a common goal, supervisors and managers lack visibility of the process. This makes it difficult to identify process improvement opportunities.Streamlined communications help consolidate all data and activities resulting in improved cooperation between mine production teams. This outcome increases the confidence and efficiency of material routing decisions. It also reduces potential impact to mine performance from errors in early stage tasks like drilling and grade control. For any gold deposit-based geometallurgical study, the collection and processing of representative samples for gold grade and recovery tests is critical. Sampling protocols should be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical recovery processes employed. Studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering (important for sampling optimisation) and proportion of coarse versus fine to refractory gold. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of objects based on density distribution. The ‘virtual’ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ gold particles in a coarse gold-bearing ore. The technique shows promise as a rapid non-destructive method for preliminary characterisation to facilitate more detailed studies. Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80¦C in rock with high crystalline silica content, resulting in a very challenging ventilation and cooling system design. This is one of the largest copper orebodies ever found and, with a planned rock production rate of 120 kton/day. The project is currently in its prefeasibility phase and the paper discusses features of the ventilation and cooling system design which includes multiple ventilation shafts with total primary ventilation flow of about 3000 m3/s and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140 MW refrigeration capacity. The cooling system features large surface bulk air coolers chilling all downcast air supplemented by an underground secondary air cooler system and a chilled service water system. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate and cool but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Moreby, R G, von Glehn, F and Pascoe, C, 2013. Research into cemented rock fill at Mount Isa Mines Limited since 1992 is described. The key mechanisms controlling segregation during stope filling with cemented rock fill are described and include the gravity flow mechanism which is described in detail. Examples are provided to demonstrate these mechanisms. Comparisons are made between Mount Isa Mines' cemented rock fill and slurry-based cemented rock fills. Recent backfill stability modelling using a three-dimensional finite clement program is described.

An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

The effect of using SO2 as an anodic depolariser in the electrowinning of copper from aqueous acid sulphate solutions has been studied using cells without/with a ceramic diaphragm. In all cases SO2-saturation of the electrolyte/anolyte decreased the anode potential by 68 to 75 per cent largely due to a change in the anode reaction from the oxidation of water to the oxidation of SO2 . However, poor quality deposits and low current efficiencies are encountered if SO2 is allowed free-access to the copper being deposited at the cathode. This situation is easily avoided by using a diaphragm to restrict SO2 to the anode compartment and for these conditions the resultant copper deposits are of a similar (high) quality to those obtained in the absence of SO2.

This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

The last decade has seen a very rapid development in TBM tunnelling. Some trends are purely technical or economical and others relate more to preferences of different interests. Power levels have more than doubled and thrust levels too. Shield machines are developed to be able to handle harder rock and the open TBMs are made more feasible for `difficult' rock. What is right and what is wrong is more a matter of opinion, but one thing is certain: TBMs now are a useful tool and no longer an experimental work-shop for the enthusiasts.This paper highlights some recent developments and indicates some probable future ones. A few features that have increased the open TBMs' ability to cope with ever harder rock and also to overcome problems with poor rock are discussed in detail, using the Atlas Copco JARVA Mk 27 -the most powerful TBM built so far - as a reference.

This paper presents the results of in-situ and laboratory investigations into a mining method which utilises conventional continuous mining techniques to carry out two passes in thick coal seams, resulting in the development of stable pillars with relatively small width dimensions and heights up to 6 m. Geotechnical investigations included structural mapping, brightness logging and standard laboratory testing. Virgin stress was measured using overcoring techniques. Two approaches to pillar design were used in the study. These were; pillar design based on empirical formulae and laboratory testing, and pillar disign using calibrated mathematical models. A trial panel was developed at 300 m depth to study pillar deformation and stress changes due to mining. The extent of rib deformation was studied using borescopes and extensometers. In-situ geotechnical measurements were used to calibrate displacement discontinuity and finite element mathematical models of the coal seam. These models were then used to predict the behaviour of a small panel of pillars which were to be developed to 6 m height. The mining method was shown to be feasible provided adequate rib support was installed. The benefit of rib support was found to be two-fold, in that it increased confinement of the pillar in zones of low horizontal stress, while reducing horizontal stress relaxation in zones of high horizontal virgin stress. The possiblity of roof control by designing the small pillars to yield on retreat is discussed.

Traditionally closure has been seen by the Resource sector solely as a green or an environmental issue, focused primarily on the requirement to rehabilitate the site following cessation of production activities. In addition to operational, maintenance and production aspects of processing plant design, future design teams will need to take a more holistic view and consider an increasing number of sustainability issues including safety in design and cleaner production as well as closure itself. Sustainability principles being adopted by industry such as the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs Enduring Value Framework are now broadening our understanding of closure. While issues around the closure of tailings dams and associated infrastructure have been widely studied, few investigations have looked closely at the implications of closure on the design of minerals processing plants. It is likely that design teams may be able to make a significant contribution to meeting industry objectives by adopting innovative designs which, in addition to meeting production objectives, deliver sustainable and cost effective plant closure outcomes. This presentation explores the opportunity for innovative design of mineral processing plants through the assessment of alternative closure objectives. This assessment specifically looks at current industry standards and statutory requirements, as well as potential risks and opportunities associated with each objective. Alternative design strategies to meet these objectives are discussed.

Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.

Copper has been mined intermittently at Gunpowder, north of Mount Isa, since 1927. Most ventures have had some initial success but fluctuating copper prices, the small-scale of the operations and the remoteness of the site led to closures or sale. Processing routes have included direct sale of high grade ore, flotation of oxide and sulphide concentrate, and copper cement production from mine solutions. Copper cathode has been produced by heap and in-place leaching coupled with solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). Aberfoyle Limited recently purchased the Gunpowder operation and is expanding operations. An innovative high recovery tank leaching process, including a low temperature, low pressure autoclave, has been adopted. Copper cathode will be produced from an expanded solvent extraction/electrowinning plant at approximately 45 000 tonnes per year. The combination of expanded throughput and high metal recoveries will make Gunpowder a cost competitive producer.
