It is indeed a pleasure to be here this morning to open the 4th Mill Operators' Conference. It is no mean feat to organise such an event and I would like to congratulate the committee for the work that they have done. I am sure that the Conference will be an outstanding success. I welcome overseas visitors and hope that they gain and share in the openness of this Conference. There is personal satisfaction for me to speak to you as a mining engineer addressing a large group of metallurgists and mill operators. I would have thought that it would be impossible for a mere mining engineer to inform a metallurgist of anything. I will desist from using such derogatory terms as "xanthate munchers", "bubble makers" and "glorified mathematicians". Terms of endearment as these may not be seen with much equanimity. Such is the warm association that the two professions have enjoyed over the years. The economic climate that we at present face is a major problem to all of us. I wonder how many people here come from mining operations that are in trouble financially or that are cutting back in one form or another. This is the recession that we needed to have. When the world's greatest treasurer can tell us that then we truly have a lot to fear. The present downturn can be seen as a normal adjustment in the cycle of our business. Yet the world does not experience such severe adjustments as frequently as we experience ours. The root cause for the regular adjustments can be placed at the feet of inflation. Until the politicians of this country of ours can come to grips with inflation, we will continue to experience downturns on a 5 to 7 year cycle. This, in my opinion, is the basic reason why we appear to experience more downturns than the rest of the world. We simply price ourselves out of the market. This takes about 5 to 7 years to be highlighted and then we need to make adjustments. However, this recession is worldwide. The adjustments usually take the form of redundancies, retrenchments and early retirements. What is the solution?

The objectives of mining grade control are presented and examples of the techniques used in various open pit and underground mines are used to define the attributes of good grade control. Reasons are discussed for the success of various improved practices. The progressive development of grade control is presented and the balance between quantitative and qualitative data is analysed. The skills and resources required for grade control on mine sites that are using best practice are also presented. A number of problems in grade control have been solved recently however there are still issues that need to be addressed. Examination of the grade control process frequently stops after sample quality has been examined. There is much more beyond this that can now be optimised using conditional simulation models. Other future directions of mining grade control are also suggested. An extensive bibliography of published papers on grade control is included that will be maintained and updated on a website.

The hoisting system at the Newcrest Telfer mine is designed for a final duty of 7.35 million tonnes per annum at a hoisting distance of 1450 m. In terms of hoisting capacity (t/h) times hoisting distance it is one of the largest friction hoist installations. Initially, the hoist will be equipped for hoisting 6.5 Mtpa from 1100 m depth. This new drive technology is now well proven by ABB for mine hoist applications with the first installation in commercial operation since July 2001. To date 17 systems for medium voltage drives and another five for low voltage drives have been purchased from ABB for mine hoists. This paper will also deal with skip design and powerful data loggers with diagnostics for local and remote monitoring that are installed in the Telfer mine hoist.

There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

Froth flotation processes use different surface properties of the minerals to be sorted. In an aqueous environment the hydrophobic mineral attaches selectively to air bubbles and is lifted to the surface of a separation vessel, while the tailings settle towards its bottom. Besides the surface properties, the hydrodynamic conditions play an important role. With respect to the hydrodynamics the flotation process can be divided, for simplicity, in two sub-processes. The attachment of hydrophobic particles to air bubbles, the so-called mineralisation, demands a large number of collisions and therefore high turbulences. The phase separation however needs a deterministic movement of both the particle-bubbles-aggregates and the tailings particles and therefore a quiescent flow field. The optimisation of the overall process requires a separation of both sub-processes, especially when fine particles have to be sorted. In conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells both sub-processes take place in the same turbulent volume. For this reason they suffer from a decreasing selectivity with decreasing particle size. In flotation columns the mineralisation of air bubbles and the phase separation are performed in a quiescent environment. This results in high concentrate grades and at the same time in a very slow attachment kinetics, which must, especially for fine particles, be counterbalanced by a long residence time of the slurry.

Government established and financed the NZ Steel Investigating Co in 1960. Its investigations showed that a steel industry was feasible and desirable based uponNorth Island titanomagnetite ironsands, and charted a route for its establishment. The initial processing used post-1945 preheating and prereduction developments, but later innovative improvements created what was essentially a new New Zealand technology. Of the North Island titanomagnetite deposits: the small ones at Waipipi were best made available for export; those at Kawhia and Taharoa were too remote for the economic siting of a mill; that at Raglan proved too small; while at Waikato North Head three times the requirement of 50 million tons of concentrate were located in two sand areas averaging 18 per cent titanomagnetite. Economic studies showed that a South Auckland site would be ideal, close to New Zealand's biggest market. The mill site, on a basalt flow at Glenbrook, was located by a half-day's fieldwork - near both the Waikato North Head deposit, and a railhead for bringing in Waikato coal, etc, and taking out steel products.   This development was one of several since World War II which altered significantly the lives and homes of New Zealanders (others were natural gas, oil, geothermal power, epithermal gold, aluminium, opencastable lignite, etc). All had the essential ingredients of the highest government backing, direct or indirect government finance, and first-class New Zealand scientific and engineering skills (eg to create new technologies). Not one such project failed.

In order to understand the technique, basic theoretical principles of radiation emission and in- strumentation theory are reviewed. Methods of surveying, reduction of data and interpretation are outlined. Other applications of the technique (e.g. in airborne geological mapping), as well as its specific use in uranium exploration, are discussed. By means of case history-type examples the successful applicant of gamma-ray spectrometry, as a tool in Australian mineral search, is demonstrated.

This study presents a comprehensive thermodynamic optimisation and sustainability analysis of the secondary copper smelting process for Waste Printed Circuit Board (WPCB) recycling. The study investigates various scenarios with different proportions of WPCB in the input stream, ranging from 0 per cent to 100 per cent. Through thermodynamic modelling using FactSage™ version 8.1, the optimisation process is conducted in three stages. The results of the thermodynamic modelling indicate that the best-case scenario for WPCB recycling is achieved with a 40 per cent proportion of WPCB in the input stream. This case exhibits a maximum copper recovery of 99.93 per cent while minimising the formation of other waste. In addition to the thermodynamic analyses, environmental factors such as the carbon emission index and resource utilisation efficiency are studied. The 40 per cent WPCB recycling case exhibits a resource utilisation efficiency of 93.055 per cent and a carbon emission rate of 0.133. The present investigation highlights the significant benefits of a 40 per cent WPCB recycling scenario through a secondary copper smelting process in terms of base metal recovery and energy efficiency, thus emphasising its potential for sustainable PCB waste management and resource utilisation.

The total drill and blast concept is widely known in the mining industry. On the contrary, the quarry industry rarely adopts such working methods. Based on the experience of the CBS quarry in the North of France, this paper shows how up-to-date blasting technology and simple control methods can significantly improve the overall Mine to Mill efficiency of a quarry. The CBS quarry, in partnership with the EPC group and Nitro- Bickford Company, adopted a new working process three years ago aimed at increasing blast performance and related productivity of the downstream process (loading, hauling and crushing). The pattern geometry of each blast is controlled and explosive charging is carried out following the æconstant specific energyÆ CSE concept. This method provides a homogeneous fragmentation distribution and reduces vibration peak-particle-velocities. The impact on downstream productivity is controlled by means of a simple information management system, which collects and measures key parameters of the production process such as; hauling cycles, crusher throughput, secondary breaking and vibration peak particle velocity. This information system has clearly proved over time that consistent blast quality could be achieved, leading to a 30 per cent improvement in quarry productivity. Improved energy control of blasting through optimisation with electronic detonators, allowed a significant reduction in vibration impact on the environment. Improvement in blasting security, reduction in the environmental impact and productivity enhancement are major benefits that quarries can obtain from these CSE optimisation blasting methods.

The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45° in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 × 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along the Waiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of "platinum" were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS)and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni. R^~

Intensive resource extraction, in the form of multiple mining operations, presents significant assessment and management challenges for resource developers, governments, community and the environment. Cumulative impacts, ie the successive, incremental and combined impacts (both positive and negative) of an activity on society, the economy and the environment, can place significant pressure on social, economic and environmental capital and render conventional mine-by-mine approaches to management ineffective. Cumulative impacts can be what are most important to environments, communities and economies surrounded by multiple mining operations because cumulative impacts are what they experience. There is much to gain from increased consideration of cumulative impacts. Unmitigated impacts have the potential to delay or even prevent expansion of mining in existing and prospective areas. On the other hand proactive management of cumulative impacts can benefit regional environments and communities and contribute to the industryÆs social license to operate. Resources are often not the limiting factor to better cumulative impact management. More effective coordination of existing resources may go a long way toward mitigation and enhancement, and better planning and assessment may help avoid impacts and exploit opportunities for efficiency gains through reduced duplication. In this paper we draw from working examples to present five practical assessment and management strategies applicable to resource companies to enhance positive, and avoid and mitigate negative, cumulative impacts. The strategies are presented based on their capacity for achieving outcomes, ease of implementation and cost effectiveness and are drawn from a multi-year study on the assessment and management of cumulative impacts in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales and a follow-up study to improve cumulative impact assessment and management practice in the Australian coal mining industry, both reported elsewhere.

Arrium’s OneSteel Whyalla Steelworks in South Australia is a fully integrated plant which operates a single blast furnace. The key operational objective has been to maintain high process availability and stability while maximising the process efficiency and the produced hot metal quality. All ferrous raw material input feeds are sourced exclusively from company iron ore deposits in the nearby Middleback Ranges. The Whyalla blast furnace has mostly operated using a combination of a high percentage of pellet feed, produced in Whyalla, together with screened lump ore.The unique ironmaking challenge has always been to extract the maximum value from the ferrous burden feed available locally. In earlier times, high-grade hematite lump ore was available for both screened lump ore and pellet production. Blast furnace trials from acid to fluxed pellet feed commenced in 1977. The furnace pellet feed has been wholly fluxed since 1981. Many pellet/lump ore feed mixes and significant pellet chemistry composition design changes have been made over the years. These changes have been aimed at best balancing the ferrous burden availability/cost and the optimum reducibility/high temperature melting behaviour of the charged ferrous feed within the blast furnace. In more recent times since 2007, the Whyalla blast furnace operation has transitioned from a hematite based pellet feed to a magnetite based pellet feed while there is an ongoing contest dealing with diminishing absolute quality/increased variability raw material feed inputs.The paper will detail key elements of the Whyalla blast furnace operational philosophy with regards to ferrous feed use and process optimisation. The record for autonomous haulage systems in underground mining over the past 15 years is patchy, marked by many trials and attempts, with few examples of sustained operation until relatively recently. The drivers for the introduction of this technology are variously listed as the occupational health and safety of people working in underground mines, reductions in direct operating costs and increases in productivity.This paper reviews the trends for operation of semi-autonomous and autonomous haulage achieved by underground mines and the defining features of the technology currently available. The inclusion of autonomous haulage as part of mining studies and the fundamental conditions for its successful application is discussed in the paper. The components required for an autonomous underground haulage system are outlined and the key aspects that need to support its effective implementation are examined together with their associated opportunities and risks. Special note is made of the critical role people, including executive leadership, have in ensuring the successful introduction of this technology.The paper draws on published case study material, equipment supplier information and research findings. This paper discusses the use of a mechanised shaft sinking machine Herrenknecht Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine (VSM) – to conduct the 93 m presink for the Wira Hoisting Shaft at the Prominent Hill Mine in South Australia. This technology has been widely used in the global construction industry, however, this was the first time it had been used in Australia and the second time in a mining application. The non-entry shaft sinking system eliminates risks associated with a traditional manual method and allows all shaft construction operation to take place from surface. The geology in the upper 100 m at the Prominent Hill mine is conducive to mechanical excavation, with expected rock strengths below 130 MPa. This enabled an alternative shaft construction methodology to be considered. The Herrenknecht VSM system was selected due to its extensive work history and demonstrated performance in similar ground conditions. In collaboration with the operations and design team, the shaft collar and surface configuration were modified to suit the requirements of the VSM, additional equipment, and loading jacks that support the pre-cast lining. Dedicated concrete moulds were designed in Germany and built in Italy. The concrete segments were cast in Adelaide and road freighted to site. This paper outlines each stage of the presink – refurbishment, transportation, logistics, establishment, operation and demobilisation. Selecting this shaft presink excavation methodology, delivered through positive collaboration and communication despite some challenges, shows the benefit to the mining industry of applying new technology and innovation to improve safety and productivity.

The triazine molecules have not been given much attention and they are potential collectors that may positively impact the mineral processing industry. The adsorption of triazine as collectors such as sodium 2,6-dithio-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTBAT) on pyrite form a basis in design of flotation collectors that may be applicable in a wide range of sulfide minerals. The SDTBAT collector was compared with the sodium normal butyl xanthate (SNBX) and sodium normal butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). All collectors were adsorbed in their neutral form containing sodium on the pyrite (100) surface. The computational calculations found that the adsorption energies followed the order: SDTBAT (-300.35 kJ/mol) > SNBX (-186.10 kJ/mol) > SNBDTC (-163.78 kJ/mol). It was observed that the SNBX and SNBDTC adsorbed through the S atoms, while the SDTBAT adsorbed through the S atoms and N atoms onto Fe atoms. It is clear that the SDTBAT had a strong binding energy which is attributed to the presence of the triazine group that is electron depositing to the active S atoms compared to the SNBX which possessed the oxygen that is electron withdrawing. Moreover, the SDTBAT collector was found to bind stronger than the xanthate. This was complimented by microflotation tests that showed fast floating and higher recoveries of pyrite when using the SDTBAT collector than the xanthate and DTC. This clearly demonstrated that the SDTBAT is a potential collector to replace the xanthate collector due to its high selectivity and flotation power.

The authors were engaged to optimise a traditional rebar cage reinforced concrete segmental lining by means of finite element analysis (FEA) using macro synthetic fibres for the Shanghai metro extension. The aim of this study was to reduce or entirely replace the original steel reinforcement of the segmental lining, in order to make the precast production process faster and more economic. The outer diameter of the tunnel was 6200 mm, the thickness of the segments was 350 mm.The numerical calculations were performed by Atena Finite Element software, which is based on the combination of Menétrey-William and Rankine failure surfaces on the compression and tension sides respectively. The effect of the macro synthetic fibres was modelled as tension stiffening on the tension surface.A one-to-one full scale model of an assembled tunnel ring using the original reinforcement cages was tested at Tongji University in Shanghai, July 2013. The ring was tested to differing load levels where load and displacement were measured until failure. The author’s first step was to calculate the real displacement characteristics of the original reinforced concrete (RC) ring, then calculate the numerically modelled version, so as to compare them. The material parameters of the concrete and rebar used had been determined through basic material tests conducted at the Tongji University. (Bi, Liu and Wang, in press).The numerical modelling undertaken has shown good correlation with the full-scale physical test results. Optimisation of the lining reinforcement was achieved through the addition of fibres, resulting in a substantial reduction of the steel rebar cages. Several results have been computed with the numerical model using different dosages of macro synthetic fibres, showing that the mass of steel reinforcement could be reduced by 50 and 75 per cent respectively.CITATION:Juhasz, K P, Nagy, L and Winterberg, R, 2014. PlannersÆ optimism (or maybe commercial necessity) means that most mine plans use equipment rates that are rarely achieved (Lumley and Beckman, 2009). This lack of understanding of what equipment actually moves is causing erroneous equipment forecasts, leading to incorrect mine development plans and economic evaluations. Compounding this problem is a downward trend in actual equipment performance in some areas. Consequently, the presentation of realistic mine plans that are actually achieved in practice is not a common occurrence. However, rational, fact-based mine planning is available to those who want it. Hundreds of millions of cycles of data from open cut mining equipment has been collected from mines around the world since 1992. This unique and highly valuable databank is growing at an exponential rate and is being used by a number of our big miners to support rational and fact-based decision-making. However, neither the use nor the appreciation of the value of this data is universal. There is a challenge to everyone in the mining industry - how do you access value from it? The databank was drilled into and the results analysed for, the Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) publication (Lumley, in press). For this paper the analysis has been extended to include interpretation of trends for draglines, shovels, excavators and trucks. It investigates trends between coal and non-coal mines and across geographic areas. It is known that mining equipment performance in most sections of the industry is falling. This paper attempts to quantify the fall and provide explanations. The trends are analysed to extract the reasons behind the changes and most importantly, what can be done about it.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2012. In this paper, the kinetics of iron precipitation as sodium jarosite from aqueous solution is investigated. The determination of the reaction mechanism is attempted based on the experimental data of iron removal as a function of time, without using the characteristics of the precipitate.Experiments at the temperature range from 50° to 95°C were carried out with initial conditions of iron concentration IQ g/L, sodium sulphate concentration 25.44 g/L, sulphuric acid concentration 3.68 g/L, pH = 1.5 and agitation rate 600 rpm. Temperature greatly and positively influences iron precipitation from the solution and this is accompanied by pH decrease. The activation energy was determined using the maximum values of the precipitation rate, which were evaluated by polynomial fitting of the sigmoidal shape experimental curves, and it was found to be 44.37 kcallmole. The determination of the rate-controll ing mechanism was based on some criteria used for the discrimination among the three probable mechanisms of precipitation (diffusion, mononuclear nucleation, polynuclear nucleation). These criteria utilise various funetions of the recovery 'a' of iron precipitated versus time, the most important of which are the chronomals. The results of the kinetic analysis procedure showed that the polynuclear nucleation growth mechanism controls the precipitation of iron as sodium jarosite. This was confirmed by the high value of activation energy, excluding diffusion as the controlling mechanism.
