The development of solvent extraction processes over recent years has led to their application on an increasing scale in metal extraction plants. The author's company has recently been awarded a contract for the design of the world's largest solvent extraction plant based on pump-mix mixer-settlers. The plant is designed to extract copper from a leach liquor and has an aqueous throughput of 12,000 imperial gpm. The design is based largely upon data obtained from the company's own research laboratories, where work has been undertaken on mixer impeller design, baffle design. settler area, organic entrainment recovery, etc. Investigations have been conducted into the effects of mixer impeller speed, recirculation rates, phase continuity, phase ratio, etc., on extraction efficiency, settler area, and organic entrainment losses. The implications of the results of this work on the design of a large plant using pump-mix mixer-settlers are discussed and the techniques used in overcoming certain scaling problem are outlined.

The "Munroe effect" of shaped explosive charges was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888), but it was not until World War II that it was put to any practical use. Both Allied and Axis armies used the principle effectively in bazooka projectiles, artillery projectiles and in fixed shaped charges. The first two were used primarily to combat tanks and other armor and the latter to assault pillboxes and other fixed concrete emplacements. Many engineers and others who saw the military application of the jet effect of shaped charges believed application would be possible in many industrial fields where blasting is used, such as mining and quarrying. Some work has already been done on the problem of making shaped charges applicable to mining operations. Experimentation conducted at the National Tunnel and Mines1 was directed primarily along the lines of use of shaped charges for secondary blasting in connection with long-hole stoping methods. Experimentation initiated earlier and conducted by the author2 at the University of Utah on a more scientific basis was directed at revealing the basic principles of the functioning of shaped charges, as well as the feasibility of using them in mining operations after the principles of their operation had been clearly defined. It was found that: (I) a given design of charge required an optimum standoff to make it most effective, either in penetrating solid rock or steel (see Fig 3); (2) for a given design of charge there exists an optimum ratio of charge diameter to charge height above which the increase in effectiveness of the charge decreases rapidly (see Figs 4 and 5); (3) partial confinenlent has the effect of making charge performance much more consistent; (4) the higher power and higher velocity explosives tested are much more effective than relatively low-strength explosives; and (5) shaped charges may be adaptable to mining operations in secondary breakage and drilling blasting holes. Fig I is a diagrammatic sketch of the action of a shaped charge for two types of cavities, while Fig 2 shows the approximate manner in which the jets are believed to be formed when an explosive wave encounters the cavity, approaching it from the top. The experimentation already completed has laid the foundation for further research in the study of shaped charges. JESSE L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-I would like to ask Miss Erskine if down-draft has been used in any of the foundries where heavy fumes have to be removed, instead of the overhead draft.? L. -ERSKINE.-The system of overhead draft to remove heavy fumes has been very much more successful. The entire efforts of the New Jersey Department of Labor in regard to stabilizing conditions in the foundry are the result of the physical examination of the foundryman himself on first-hand information as to the prevalence of the minor ailments and the bad timekeeping that naturally accompanies them. These ailments are a factor in not only increasing the labor turnover but in increasing the percentage of bad work as well. The physical exertion of the foundryman himself is of course an important factor. In certain standard shops the amount of energy expended runs from 11 to 13 tons of foot-pounds of energy a day. In certain shops on piece work, I found a record of the energy expended per day to run as high as 22 tons. In one shop, during the war period, the management established a bonus system, and the men increased their output from 60 to 100 molds a day. The result was an increase of some 60 per cent. in output, and an increase of 400 per cent. in defective castings. The question of the physical exertion in the unsanitary foundries, of course, is very much complicated by other factors, for which reason the department has devoted a good deal of attention to estimating what is a reasonable exertion in a sanitary, well ventilated foundry. We have met certain physical difficulties in the brass foundries that the iron foundries did not have. All that information is available through our Bureau of Industrial Information. The question of the physical energy exerted by the molder is found to have a very distinct bearing on the question of contracts, for the possibility of increasing production is balanced by the extra overhead involved. JESSE L. JONES.-I would like to ask if any evidence has been noticed of carbon-monoxid poisoning among the employees of the foundries.

I., has long been known, chiefly as a geological fact; that these materials, so near to each other and to tidewater, are of such a good quality and are present in such large quantity, as to have seriously raised the question of establishing blast furnaces there, was a surprising fact to me; and I have thought that the few notes I have lately gathered on the subject would be of interest at this partly New England meeting. The coal field referred to has an area of above 400 square miles, and is found throughout the belt of transition rocks extending from Newport Neck to Mansfield, Massachusetts. High angle conveyor (HA C) systems in open-¬pit mining offer many advantages over the traditional, truck only, haulage systems. These include superior energy efficiency, less dependency on petroleum products, less sensitivity to inflation, less excavation for the amount of ore recovered, and less ramp construction and maintenance costs. Various high angle conveying systems and the corresponding characteristics of the high angle conveyor are illustrated. Discussion includes the range of HAC systems from the low capacity (up to 1.8 kt/h or 2000 stph), low lift (10.7 to 36.6 m or 35 to 120 ft), continuously mobile to the moderate capacity (1.8 to 3.6 kt/h or 2000 to 4000 stph), moderate lift (36.6 to 76.2 m or 120 to 250 ft), intermittently mobile to the high capacity (greater than 3.6 kt/h or 4000 stph), high lift (greater than 76.2 m or 250 ft), semimobile. Combinations of the above as required for the various open-pit mining operations are also discussed.

In this paper on the recovery of mercury as sulphide, from the residues from the amalgamation and cyanide treatment of high-grade ores and concentrates, I will not discuss the many reactions, chemical and other- wise, that take place in the general process, but confine myself more particularly to the methods of recovering the mercury. I submit charts of two amalgamation-barrel charges, Figs. 1 and 2, which are self-explanatory. The flow sheet of the high-grade and the mercury extraction plants is showh in Fig. 3.

Certain dusts are dangerous when inhaled, but most hazardous of all dusts are quartz or other forms of pure crystalline silica. The inhalation of dusts containing silica in combination with other elements gives rise to changes in the lung which differ from those produced by pure silica. As a generality, silicates are less dangerous than pure crystalline silica and vary greatly among themselves in harmfulness. Repeated analyses have shown that approximately 70 per cent of the total number of particles involved in any dust-producing operation are below 1 to 2 microns in diameter. (A micron is approximately 1/25,000 in.) Similar studies of dusts recovered from silicotic lungs post mortem have demonstrated essentially the same size frequency distribution, except that the upper limit of size retained in the air sacs is approximately 10 microns. Experiments carried on by Gardner and the author have further demonstrated that greater changes were produced by a fixed weight of very fine quartz particles (2 to 3 microns and smaller) than by the same weight of slightly larger particles (8 to 10 microns). Any attempt to control a dust hazard should therefore be directed toward the removal from the working atmosphere of particles less than 10 microns in size, and particularly those below 3 microns. All industrial hygienists agree on this matter, but there remains considerable dispute as to the lower limit of particle size capable of causing injury. It has been generally conceded, however, that particles of harmful dusts smaller than 1/4 to 1/2, micron are not essentially concerned in the development of pulmonary fibrosis. This opinion is partly substantiated by the existence of large numbers of these small particles in practically all atmospheres that are not associated with any known hazard. Such particles are so small that they have very little mass, fail to settle even in quiet air, and probably are not easily retained in the lung. Until further research proves that they are involved in the dangers provoked by the inhalation of certain dusts, engineers will generally agree that it is better to disregard them.

The Holden mine operated by the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Co. is on the east slope of the Cascade Range in north central Washington on the south slope of Railroad Creek valley at an elevation of 3500 ft. The mine may be reached by a 40 mile boat trip from the town of Chelan which is at the southern tip of Lake Chelan, to Lucerne at the mouth of Railroad Creek and an 11 mile bus ride up Railroad Creek to Holden. All freight and concentrate is moved over this route to Chelan Falls on the Columbia River which is on the railroad four miles below the town of Chelan. The mine is now producing 2000 tons of gold, copper, and zinc ore per day which is treated in the Holden mill. Gold-copper and zinc concentrates are made, the first of which is shipped to Tacoma, Wash., and the latter to Kellogg, Idaho, for smelting.

Olivine is a mineral containing a mixture of forsterite (Mg,SiO,) and fayalite (Fe,SiO,) in solid solution. The name "olivine" was first applied by Werner in 1790 (Hunter, 1941) because of the olive-green color of the mineral. Uses The principal use of olivine is in various foundry applications. Perhaps the largest tonnage is utilized as a special foundry sand for mold-making in brass, aluminum, and magnesium foundries (Schaller, 1957, 1958; Snyder, 1957). Olivine was first used as an industrial mineral in the early 1930s for a refractory material (Anon., 1970; Hunter, 1941). As a refractory raw material, olivine was first introduced in the United States as handcobbed, selected, shaped blocks of crude olivine. This use met with limited success. More recently, finely ground olivine blended with MgO and pressed into bricks, which are then fired, have found use in glass tank furnaces and open-hearth furnaces. Ramming or gunning mixes for basic furnace linings also utilize olivine. Olivine has been used in ladle linings with varied success. In Europe, substantial tonnages of olivine are utilized in refractory brick for night storage heaters (Anon., 1970). A limited amount of olivine has been used in the past as a fertilizer (magnesium source) and has been fused with rock phosphate to produce a magnesium phosphate as a plant food. The relatively high magnesia (MgO) content of olivine also attracted attention to it as a potential source of both magnesium compounds and as a source of metallic magnesium (Bengston, 1956; Hunter, 1941). Industries using olivine have not standardized specifications. Normally, producers supply a product which meets individual customer requirements. Such requirements involve type and amount of impurities, grain size of product, refractory characteristics, etc. Geology Olivine occurs commonly as accessories in basic igneous and basic metamorphic rocks. Economic deposits are of magmatic origin and are restricted to essentially the dunite variety of periodotite. Dunites are medium to coarse- grained crystalline rocks, generally reddish brown on weathered outcrop, and are composed primarily of olivine.

IN the vertical contact Soederberg electrode for aluminum furnaces more or less serious cracks are sometimes formed in the electrode, with harmful effect on furnace operation. The problem of crack formation has been studied on a laboratory scale to obtain a better understanding of this phenomenon. The primary cause of crack formation is the shrinkage of the electrode carbon, which is opposed by the normal thermal expansion of the steel contact studs. The forces thus set up are active in the temperature interval from which the electrode obtains a rigid structure (450" to 500°C) to furnace operational temperature (950°C). A visualization of our reasoning is given in Fig. 1, which shows the different behavior of mild steel and electrode carbon during baking. Research work performed to determine relationships between crack formation and shrinkage will be described. A brief description of the method developed for measurement of shrinkage will be given, as well as a critical analysis of this method. Also, raw material quality and paste composition variables will be related to shrinkage phenomena. Laboratory Test of Crack. Formation To test the tendency toward crack formations of Soederberg electrodes from different pastes, experiments were performed to simulate conditions of actual commercial electrodes, and are described as follows. A cylindrical test electrode is prepared by tamping the electrode paste to be examined in a sheet iron casing, 350 mm diam by 700 mm height. The casing is perforated, with the holes (2 mm diam) 50 mm apart, to facilitate the escape of volatile matter during baking. A cylindrical steel stud of actual service size, 100 mm diam, is welded eccentrically to the bottom steel plate, and protrudes up through the paste. During baking, a crack may thus occur in the weaker part of the test electrode. The electrode is baked by lowering the assembly slowly into an electric furnace, the temperature of which is kept constant at 900°C. After baking of the electrode, the sheet iron casing is removed and the electrode inspected for cracks. The pictures in Fig. 2 are of three different pastes baked according to the present method. Electrode 1 has a large crack; electrode 2, a somewhat smaller one; and electrode 3, only a minor crack. As will be seen from the simplified sieve analysis diagram of Fig. 2, the compositions of the pastes in question are very different. This subject will be discussed later in greater detail. In these troubled times free enterprise is maintaining vital molybdenum output, while expanding plant, and bringing in new low grade ore reserves, at Climax, the world's largest known molybdenum deposit. Climax Molybdenum Co. is putting $25 million into additional surface plant facilities and other millions into underground development. The expansion program to be operating by 1954 includes a new mining level, crushing plant, 4000-ft conveyor, milling units, by-products plant, and housing for 198 families. Completion of this program and low grade plant will add 10,000 tons per day to present capacity and several million tons to ore reserves.

THAT Colorado was producing oil and gas before the fields of the Mid-Continent were discovered is a fact too frequently overlooked. As early as 1862, oil was obtained in the Florence district (see Fig. 1) from seepages and shallow holes. The first well that could be regarded Fig. 1. as being truly commercial was drilled in this field in 1876. The field is now producing 100,000 bbl. per year, and is credited with a total production of approximately 11,000,000 bbl. The small field near Boulder, Boulder County, was opened in 1901; production has now practically ceased but the field is credited" with a total production of 610,000 bbl. Oil was discovered at Rangeley in 1901, and the field supports a small local refinery at the present time. A new correlation of blast penetration in model and operating blast furnaces is presented which overcomes objections to prevzous correlations. It is shown that the tuyere diameter is only of small importance in determining the magnitude of the penetration. The data from operating furnaces correlate satisfactorily with the data from models whose cross section is a segment of a circle. A bubble-shaped gas space called a "raceway" normally exists in front of the nose of a blastfurnace tuyere. The periphery or "wall" of the raceway is well defined and is composed of densely packed charge particles. The blast. issuing as a jet from the tuyere, entrains gas from the raceway, in the usual manner of a jet, as it flows to the opposing wall. There it divides and flows back around the walls to be entrained once more. The blast must, of course, eventually leave the raceway and pass up through the charge column, but before it does it may, on the average, make several circuits of the kind described and in doing so it carries with it charge particles, which, because of their fast and circulating motion, suggested the name of "raceway". A fuller description of the raceway may be found elsewhere."' Here it is only necessary to mention, in addition, the measurement which characterizes its size. If an iron bar is pushed through the opened peepsight of a tuyere, .as far as it will go with ease, it will be stopped by the relatively impenetrable opposing raceway wall arid the distance that the bar has been pushed from the tuyere nose is called the "penetration". This measurement may be of practical importance and has; been the subject, with considerable success, of several attempts at correlation with other variables2-5 as stated in the next section. There is still, however, a serious objection to the most recent correlation,3 which is overcome by the correlation proposed in this paper. It will be shown that the objection is not trivial, in that the new correlation will attribute considerably different importance to the variables affecting the magnitude of the penetration. The data to be treated were made available by Wagstaff and are the same as those used in his correlation. They include measurements taken on small models, in which a cold air blast was used and no combustion occurred, and they also include data from operating blast furnaces at Wheeling and Fairless. The information from the blast furnaces will be shown to be in substantial agreement with those models whose plan views are segments of a circle and which are thus like segments of a blast furnace. First, Wagstaff's most recent correlation3 will be discussed and the objection will be given. Then the new correlation will be developed and its implications considered. CORRELATION OF J. B. It has long been known to boiler makers and to the users of cylindrical pipes of many kinds that when a tube is exposed to internal fluid pressure the resolution of forces is such that the material of the walls of the tube is exposed to twice the stress in the direction tending to produce longitudinal rupture, as it is in the direction to produce circumferential fracture. By longitudinal fracture is meant the fracture by a rent parallel to the axis; by circumferential fracture is meant fracture by rents running round the cylinder. In consequence of this the makers of boilers always lay the fibre of their metal in direction round the boiler, and the same is true with the makers of gun-barrels. I have never seen any good and simple illustration of this law until I met with it in blowing glass. If a thin bubble of glass be blown out in a spherical form and then exploded it will be found that the particles tumble into totally irregular shapes, showing no special direction in the molecular structure of the material. If now a bubble of glass be blown out and so manipulated that it will take a cylindrical form (see accompanying illustration), and then be exploded, it will drop into ribbon-shaped pieces from end to end, and the only parts that will be found to differ from this form will be the two hemispherical ends which will remain whole, having a fringe of ribbons representing the line of their fracture from the cylinder. In addition to the alloys of copper with iron previously found by Hanson and Ford to show an increase in the concentration of the alpha range with increase in temperature the following binary and ternary systems have been found by the author to exhibit: the same feature: (a) Copper-chromium. (b) Copper-cobalt. (c) Copper-silicon. (d) Copper-nickel-silicon and its pseudo-binary section Cu-Ni2Si (formula of compound definitely established). (e) Copper-cobalt-silicon and its pseudo-binary section Cu-Co2Si (formula of compound established with some probability but not as definitely as for Ni2Si). (f) Copper-chromium-silicon; formation of a compound definitely established (compare Figs. 1 and 2). The formula of this compound may be either Cr2Si or Cr3Si. (g) Copper-iron-silicon; presence of a phase containing both iron and silicon established in an indirect way only. No definite microconstituents observed. 2. RANGES OF SOLID SOLUBILITY (percentage at various tempera¬tures). (a) For copper-chromium: 0.8 at 1000° C.; 0.5 at 900° C.; 0.25 at 800° C.; 0.05 to 0.1 at 500° C. (b) For copper-cobalt: 3.4 at 1000'C.; 2.4 at 900'C.; 1.7 at 800'C.; 0.9 at 600°C.; 0.35 at room temperature. (c) For copper-silicon (Fig. 3) : 6.8 ± 0.1. per cent. at 800° C.; 3 per cent. at 400° C. and probably below 2 per cent. at room temperature if sufficiently long annealed. (d) For copper-cobalt silicide: 3.3 at 1000° C.; 2.4 at 900° C.; 1.6 at 800° C.; 0.7 at 600° C.; 0.3 at 300° C.
