The purpose of pulverizing coal before burning it is to make available every heat unit it contains. Machinery has been developed which will pulverize coal in one operation, delivering it to bins in front of the furnaces at an expenditure of about 17 hp.-hr. per ton, in a medium-sized plant. The cost of the operation depends upon the amount of moisture that must be expelled before pulverizing, the cost of labor, and the cost of coal delivered at the plant. At a small plant, requiring a pulverizer with a capacity of only 1/2 ton per hour, the cost per ton pulverized will naturally be greater than at a plant requiring the largest pulverizer, with a capacity of 7 tons per hour. :The first step is to reduce large lumps to a size suitable for drying uniformly, before passing to the pulverizing mills; this is done in rolls, at a single pass. The second step is the elimination of moisture, in order to facilitate pulverizing to great fineness, while also increasing the heating effect and the temperature attainable when the coal is burned. There are other mechanical advantages in the handling of dried coal. Driers are now manufactured which are able to eliminate moisture without distilling any of the volatile combustible matter in the coal; they are fired by hand or with pulverized fuel. The heat first surrounds the shell of the drier, being confined within a chamber where complete combustion takes place; the heated gases are then led through a duct to the discharge end of the drier and enter the inside of the shell at a temperature not exceeding 300" F. This temperature is maintained by the operator and is indicated by a pyrometer. Volatile combustible matter is not likely to be distilled until the temperature rises above 400" F. On discharging from the drier, the coal is usually passed over a magnetic separator in order to prevent pieces of iron from going to the pulverizer. Two types are used: a magnetic pulley which automatically discharges its collection of iron, and a lifting type, from which the iron is removed by hand when convenient. In the operation of pulverizing, the coal should preferably be reduced until 95 per cent. will pass through a 100-mesh and 70 per cent. through a 300-mesh sieve. Such a product is obviously an almost impalpable powder.

As the time allotted is short, we can present only a general idea of the oil laws in the Latin-American republics, as a supplement to Bulletin 206 of the Department of the Interior compiled under the direction of J. W. Thompson of the Bureau of Mines and entitled "Petroleum Laws of All America." We shall not discuss the European colonies in Latin-America nor the island republics. As to the countries discussed, we shall attempt to give the main features of such special petroleum legislation as has been adopted prior to the early part of this year; where no special petroleum laws exist, we must look to the mining codes for light on the petroleum policy. As the laws and regulations for the extraction of the metals are often difficult of application to, and are lacking in many essentials for, the petroleum industry, it is best for persons or companies desiring to enter, on a large scale, into the petroleum exploration and development of countries not having special petroleum legislation, to obtain a concession contract from the executive of the country under consideration, and to have the concession approved by the congress. If this concession, which would then be a special law, contains nothing contrary to the constitution of that country and does not infringe on vested rights of third parties, it should be reasonably safe. If in such country there is some doubt as to whether the petroleum subsoil is owned by the nation or the private surface owner, only public lands should be covered with the concession. Guatemala is the only republic in the group that discriminates directly against foreigners. Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela require waivers of diplomatic protection.' Colombia requires foreigners to agree to be bound by its alien law. In addition,Mexico makes it unlawful for foreigners to acquire direct ownership of real estate, including mines, within a zone of 50 km. along the coasts and one of 100 km. alongitsland

Since the discovery of von Laue, that a crystal forms a natural grating for X-rays, our knowledge of the structure of solids has gone forward with rapid strides. This progress is not only of purely scientific interest, but has also yielded direct technological results. One of the most valuable results is the broadening of our knowledge of the structure of pure metals and alloys. To promote these studies it is often desirable to have at our disposal pieces of metal consisting of one single crystal. As is so often the case in the natural sciences, we obtain the best results by making our earliest experiments on pure, simple materials and avoiding unnecessary complications. The Cryogen Laboratory at Leyden followed this method with much success, because the work was done at such low temperatures that the heat movement of the atoms was almost absent. Similarly we can simplify the studies of metals by leaving out of consideration the influence of the grain boundaries and the mutual influence of the crystals by using unicrystalline instead of polycrystal-line metal. Methods of making single crystals have been scientifically studied during the past few years. Some methods were already known in the arts, but these have been improved and new methods have been developed. The methods for making metallic single crystals may be divided into the following groups: A. From the liquid state B. From the gaseous state C. Electrolytically D. Laboratory model flow tests have been made to simulate field conditions of partial pressure rnaintenance by dispersed gas drive on rocks having sandstone-type porosity. In this production method there is a significant saturation gradient between injection and production wells. A means of calculating relative permeability characteristics. from partial pressure rnaintenance flow tests has been developed. This method takes into account the saturation gradient. These kg/ko characteristics are identical to those for solution and external gas drives. This method of calculation, which has been proved experimentally, has limitations; however, it is valid for cases likely to be encountered in field prediction of partial pressure maintenance performance. The production performance of a hypothetical reservoir has been calculated for several different injection programs, involving both full and partial pressure maintenance. Results indicate that the maxinum oil recovery by these gas injection programs is obtained by full pressure mainte- nance at the original bubble point. Correspondingly lower oil recoveries are obtained by postponing gas injection and/or by reducing the degree of pressure maintenance. INTRODUCTION Dispersed gas injection is an important method of recovering additional oil beyond that obtainable by pressure depletion alone. The injected gas acts as a source of additional energy to displace oil from the rock formation as well as to retard oil shrinkage in the reservoir. In practice, gas injection is usually started after the reservoir pressure has fallen below the original bubble point. For various reasons sufficient gas is generally not injected to completely maintain the pressure in the reservoir. So, injecting gas at a declining reservoir pressure results in a combined external and solution gas drive. These two oil displacement processes are characterized by different gross saturation distributions in the reservoir. The external gas drive, like all frontal drive processes, inherently results in an oil saturation which increases from the injection wells to the producing wells. In the solution gas drive there is essentially a uniform oil saturation throughout the reservoir, provided the field is being depleted uniformly. It has been customary to predict oil recovery performance under partial pressure maintenance by a method which does not take into account the saturation gradient1. It has been shown2 that neglecting the presence of a saturation gradient can cause considerable error. It is the purpose of this paper to develop and present an improved method of predicting partial pressure maintenance performance of reservoirs including, where necessary. the effects of well arrangement. From the laboratory standpoint, this problem involves the measurement of the basic flow behavior (relative permeability characteristics) under partial pressure maintenance conditions. Recent research- as shown that for rocks having sandstone-type porosity, the relative permeability characteristics are identical for solution gas drive and complete pressure maintenance external gas drives. AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal ribs and movement of the roof and pavement.

Soon after general use of stainless steels began, it was observed in practice that certain combinations of factors tended to induce corrosion by pitting. For most applications this was a serious drawback, not SO much because the structural properties of the metal were impaired but because of the rapidity with which heavy sections of the alloys were penetrated by small elongated pits. These pits seemed to initiate readily in oxidizing metal salt solutions like ferric chloride and in chloride solutions like sea water. It was observed that in sea water pitting was more frequent in stagnant or polluted waters than in highly aerated, moving waters. The steels in these chloride solutions were observed to be sensitive to long contact with material such as sand grains or attached barnacles. At points of attachment or contact it was not uncommon to discover initiation of corrosion. Pits once begun at contact faces were observed to grow rapidly, usually elongating phenomenally in the direction of gravity until the metal was perforated. Hydrochloric acid and other nonoxidizing acids, on the other hand, were observed to corrode stainless steels generally; the weight losses often were higher, but the penetration less than for the pitting type of corrosion. The causes of pitting, a type of corrosion recognized as characteristic not only of stainless steels but of many additional metals and alloys, are important in corrosion studies. A possible explanation bears practical significance, for once it is known why pits begin where they do and continue to grow after initiation, intelligent direction can be given to diminishing corrosion. This can be done either by some alteration in the composition and treatment or' the alloy or by some alteration in the environment. It appears foremost in importance to discover the nature of pit foci, for if initiation of pits can be discouraged their growth will be no longer a factor to be considered. In a multi-component alloy containing many impurities normal to production of such an alloy, each of which may play a part in pitting, and whose corrosion resistance is sensitive to heat-

As used in connection with open-hearth or other high-temperature operations, "insulation" refers to a multitude of substances, natural or manufactured, that have the one principal property of preventing the flow of heat by conduction to a greater degree than refractories can prevent it, the principal properties of the latter being resistance to temperature and/or chemical action. The term "control" as commonly applied to the mechanization of management functions is inappropriate without qualification, for without some degree of control of every operation we could produce no steel worthy of the name. Although grouped together in this paper, insulation and control in open-hearth furnaces have little, if any, interrelationship, therefore the paper is made up of two distinct parts. It is generally recognized that "low temperatures" have a definite effect on the properties of metals and alloys. Furthermore, it is also generally understood that the effect is decidedly adverse. The possibility that the same low-temperature treatment might be employed for the purpose of improving certain properties of the alloys has received less attention until recently, and the experimental and theoretical knowledge consequently is meager. The effect of low temperatures may be studied in two ways: by studying such properties as tensile strength, hardpess, impact resistance, etc., at low temperature, and by studying the properties of alloys at room temperature after these alloys have been subjected to a low-temperature treatment. Even in the latter case, certain properties will differ materially from the same properties obtained on identical material but without cold treatment. In other words, subjecting alloys to cold treatment results in an irreversible change in mechanical properties. Changes of this character are usually indications of the appearance of a new phase or phases, and would be likely to occur in alloys which, either by virtue of their composition or by heat treatment, are retained at room temperature in a metastable condition. Consequently, studies of the effect of low temperatures logically should be conducted from the physicochemical point of view, since the results of such studies not only would furnish metallurgists with interesting theoretical data but would clearly indicate the classes of alloys that would hold promise of improvement, and, possibly, of new applications. As the present investmigation deals with chromium and chromium-nickel alloys of iron of the stainless variety, it has been thought desirable to present the data concerning low-temperature properties of these alloys, available from the most recent and most comprehensive work of H. This paper aims to present the results of an investigation concerning gravitative differentiation in lava flows, based on a quantitative microscopic and chemical study of a Triassic basalt from Nova Scotia, and confirmed by data secured from a study of certain Keweenawan ophites. At Cape d'Or, Nova Scotia, near the head of the Bay of Bundy, marine erosion has exposed a series of Triassic basalt flows in which copper has been sought for a number of years. Studies of the thickest flow of the series with regard to volumetric composition, specific gravity, and grain have been made by the junior author, and measurements by students at Tufts College, together with confirmatory observations of the same nature on this and other flows by the senior writer, and chemical analyses made by the Division of Chemistry, Mines Branch, Ottawa,' all show differentiation in lava flows comparable to that in intrusive bodies. The work was made possible by the availability of the drill-cores, the property of Tufts College, and emphasizes the desirability of the study of drill-cores from other localities. Measurements of the specific gravities of certain Keweenawan lava flows of Michigan by the senior author, from material collected in 1915, will be given as a comparison to those of the Cape d'Or flow. It has been found that the specific gravity of drill-cores, or volume per cubic foot, can be readily obtained by measuring their dimensions. This can be done to an accuracy of within 1 per cent. in pieces of core over 100 mm. in length by using a micrometer gage for the diameter, and taking the average of six measurements of the diameter; and the average of four measurements of the length made with a finely graduated ruler. Then, after weighing them, the weight in grams per cubic centimeter, or what is practically the same thing, ounces per cubic foot, is obtained. System-

The Cliffs Shaft mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., located in the city of Ishpeming, Mich., is the largest producer of hard hematite ore on the Marquette iron range. The two shafts, A and B, lying 820 ft. (250 m.) apart on the east-west trend of the ore formation, were sunk in the early eighties, and, except for four years, have been steady producers of iron ore. Their location, on a hill overlooking the general offices of the company on the one side and the city of Ishpeming on the other, has made the shaft houses landmarks. In the spring of 1919, as the old wooden shaft houses had become shaky and out of line, and would soon be unsafe, it was necessary to replace them with the least possible delay. Three plans of construction were, therefore, considered: To replace the old shaft houses by somewhat similar structures made of wood; to use steel and radically change the design; or to build reinforced-conerete shaft houses outside of the wooden structures, completely enclosing them. The first plan was disapproved, because it is anticipated that the mine will have a long life and the proximity of other buildings makes the danger from fire rather great. Delay in receiving material, and the necessity for closing the shafts during erection, were other factors in the situation. The second plan was disapproved on account of the high cost of steel, slow delivery, and interference with hoisting during the period of erection. The presence near one of the shafts of a large bed of hard gravel suitable for concrete made the cost of the third plan considerably less than the second, and little, if any, delay in hoisting was expected. Our expectations in this regard were fully realized. Furthermore, the work could be done by unskilled labor, which was plentiful, and the erection could be quickly started. When the proposition was submitted to W. G. Mather, president of the company, he recommended that, on account of the prominence of the buildings due to their location, an effort should be made to combine in the design as far as practicable something of architectural beauty. Further development of mechanical boring machines for hard and abrasive rocks will be effected by the development of more efficient rock cutting tools or the evolution of entirely new rock excavating principles. Presently the cutting tools suitable for extremely hard rocks and successfully and economically used with raise and tunnel boring machines are tungsten carbide insert big hole cutters. This paper explains the design, rock cutting principles, and actual boring operations to illustrate the capabilities and applications of tungsten carbide (TC) insert cutters. While the rate of borehole advance may fall short of the rapid excavating results achieved with soft rock boring machines, the cutter described in this paper may prove to be the most suitable tool in hard rock excavation for many years to come. DEFINITION OF HARD ROCK Existing bored excavations in hard abrasive rocks are proof of the economic application of new methods and mechanical rock boring in the mining industry. Most of the experience in cutting hard to extremely hard rocks has been gained in raise boring where relatively short and small diameter openings are bored. This poses a lesser risk regarding cutter cost than a long and large diameter tunnel and has therefore promoted the testing of various cutter products. Many types of rocks and geologic conditions were en- countered and actual test data was recorded in materials of up to 100,000 psi uniaxial compressive strength. To clarify the term hard to extremely hard, a 1970 interpretation of rock strength which was recently used is adopted and expanded in this paper.

This paper is the result of a study, in 1919, to determine how much surplus power could be produced through the proper utilization of the entire gas flow from the two furnace stacks at the Federal Furnace Plant, South Chicago, 111. Obviously, the problem was to measure the flow of gas through the main beyond the point where the amount necessary for stove operation mas rermoved. In all probability, blast-furnace gas is the most difficult gas to measure, because of the high moisture and dust content, and the widely fluctuating flow from the furnaces. This wide fluctuation of flow forbids the acceptance of any one group of flow road-ings as indicative of normal operating conditions. A study of the conditions showed that a recording device on gas flow was necessary. As the gas at the point of measurement had passed through met washers, and accordingly was saturated with water and contained considerable dust carried past the scrubbers in the form of sludge, no form of Pitot tube could be used, for this sludge would quickly plug the dynamic. and static holes, spoiling the gage readings. An even more serious objection to the use of Pitot tubes was the impossibility of accurately measuring the cross-sectional area of the gas main on the plane of Pitot-tube installation. Given an absolutely clean gas and a perfectly circular pipe, it would be safe to assume, through measurements of the pipe diameter, that the gas main was of a certain cross-sectional area. But the continual depositing of sludge and the fact that the main mas fabricated from riveted sheets led us to discard the idea of using Pitot tubes for. this service. The Venturi tube mas then considered, and had there been a sufficiently long straight run of gas main to accommodate a tube of the required size (72 by 28 in.) such an installation would very likely have been made. Neighboring mines, like men who live in the same environment, often assume similar characteristics. In the Bridge River area of the Lillooet district in central British Columbia there is a remarkable exception to this rule. The Pioneer mine has a simple fissure over 3000 ft. long, with no faults of more than a few feet and with only minor variations in width; the Bralorne mine, 2½ miles away at the other end of the same intrusion, has developed one of the most intricate vein and fault systems in the West. Hinged faults displace the main vein for hundreds of feet, and sometimes become valuable veins themselves. The width of ore varies in a few yards from 2 to 60 ft. Changes in grade of ore are just as abrupt. The rocks that follow the veins or are cut by them often grade into one another or into the ore with no definite contacts. Although the complexity of the structure has left many problems unsolved, the development has indicated a fascinating geological pattern. The Bralorne is in the eastern portion of the Coast Range, 55 miles by spectacular mountain road from the Pacific Great Eastern Railway station of Bridge River. The adit tunnel runs easterly from Cadwallader Creek, a tributary of Bridge River that flows into the Fraser River. Neighboring mines, like men who live in the same environment, often assume similar characteristics. In the Bridge River area of the Lillooet district in central British Columbia there is a remarkable exception to this rule. The Pioneer mine has a simple fissure over 3000 ft. long, with no faults of more than a few feet and with only minor variations in width; the Bralorne mine, 2½ miles away at the other end of the same intrusion, has developed one of the most intricate vein and fault systems in the West. Hinged faults displace the main vein for hundreds of feet, and sometimes become valuable veins themselves. The width of ore varies in a few yards from 2 to 60 ft. Changes in grade of ore are just as abrupt. The rocks that follow the veins or are cut by them often grade into one another or into the ore with no definite contacts. Although the complexity of the structure has left many problems unsolved, the development has indicated a fascinating geological pattern. The Bralorne is in the eastern portion of the Coast Range, 55 miles by spectacular mountain road from the Pacific Great Eastern Railway station of Bridge River. The adit tunnel runs easterly from Cadwallader Creek, a tributary of Bridge River that flows into the Fraser River.
