IN 1926, finer grinding began to be a feature of the milling practice of the Southeast Missouri lead district. Nothing since the adoption of flotation has caused greater changes and greater improvement in results. The trend toward finer grinding, with the consequent discarding of tailing at finer sizes, and consequent lower assays in lead, continued to progress until 1931, when the abnormally low price of lead brought a halt: that is, the better metallurgical results obtained would not offset the increased costs due to higher power and necessary maintenance. Since 1931 a slight tendency toward the discard of coarser tailing has taken place. , In 1926, larger rod mills i.12 ft. 1 in. by 6 ft. 6 in.) than any previously used in the district were installed in cue plant, and a new primary crushing plant, of greater capacity was built. This combination demonstrated immediately the better metallurgical results obtainable by finer grinding and all the mills now running have adopted the practice.

DURING the wartime rush to prepare the glass necessary for the needs of our army and navy, the problem of the temperature control of the annealing kilns became most serious. The narrow limits of strain allowable (all the specifications called for less internal strain than the average of the previously used German glass) made necessary a very exact procedure and the methods had to be used on a much larger scale than theretofore. At the Charleroi plant of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., the members of the staff of the Geophysical Laboratory, which was cooperating with the company, had occasion to study the methods available, and reached a number of conclusions (many of them by no means new except in their application) that may interest and assist those who have to meet similar problems in other fields. The following is a short account of the essential features of the system of temperature control evolved, along with a rather abridged statement of the reasons that led to the adoption or rejection of various schemes.

Ghenn.*—It has been established that the accuracy obtainable from any precision machine is a function of the wear resistance, maintenance and closeness of fit of the bearings, hence I would like to ask Mr. Toeplitz how these oil-less bearings compare with cast iron or babbitt or similar materials when used on precision machinery. Could these bearings be used, for example, on a grinding machine in which work must be held to a tolerance of plus or minus 0.000025 inch? W. R. TOEPLITZ.—The metal-powder bearings can be held to very close tolerances and are used in place of cast iron and babbitt on precision machinery.

DUE to wartime secrecy restrictions a large part of the technical information developed by government and industrial laboratories was withheld from distribution. Much of this information has now been released or "declassified" and reports of technical work carried out during the war in allied and enemy countries are also becoming available. Information on the latter subject has been augmented by the work of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Corps of the U. S. Army. Through the Joint Chiefs of Staff, rep¬resentatives of this Corps co-operated with the British Combined Intelligence Observations Subcommittee, and some of the observations were made by combined personnel of both groups. The U. S. Government has undertaken the indexing and abstracting of all of this information in the Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, a weekly bulletin which appeared first early in 1946. Other publications, such as the Bulletin of the British Iron and Steel Institute and The Metals Review of the American Society for Metals, provide abstracts of domestic and foreign magazine articles and papers presented to technical societies. However, they do not cover the industrial and government reports recently released by the Government nor the reports of the Army investigators hence the new bibliography is a welcome addition to our metallurgical library.

NONMETALLIC MINERALS, exclusive of fuels, may be divided into three groups: Building materials, fertilizer minerals, and miscellaneous minerals. Building materials, such as sand, gravel, slone, lime, and the ingredients of cement and clay products, occur widely in nature and are thus available near consuming centers at relatively low prices. Cost of transportation over great distances deters any' substantial movement in world trade. On the other hand, fertilizer minerals, such as phosphate rock, potash, nitrates, sulfur, and pyrite, and the miscellaneous nonmetallic minerals, such as long-fiber asbestos, mica, graphite, fluorspar, and china clay, do not have such widespread occurrence and consequently contribute the major part of the world's commerce in such minerals. Hugh E. McKinstry (Professor of Geology, Laboratory of Mining Geology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.) Pre-Cambrian age for the Coeur d'Alene mineralization, as indicated by isotope studies and recently discussed by Silverman, Long, and Kulp' would explain some features of the mineralogy of the district that have long been a puzzle. In the Silver Belt, especially in the Sunshine mine, lead-zinc min erali zation passes downward into tetrahedrite ore. Although commercially speaking this is a rich silver zone, the silver is, quantitatively, a mere impurity amounting to a small fraction of 1 pct. In effect the zonal change is from lead-zinc down into copper mineralization—-the usual zonal change that occurs in many districts. In the Burke-Mullan portion of the district, on the other hand, lead-zinc ore does not pass downward into copper mineralization of the Sunshine type. Instead, pyrrhotite appears in depth while the tenor in lead and zinc declines. The change occurs at increasingly greater depth away from the Gem stocks, deepening irregularly by some 3000 ft within two to four miles. As noted by Crosby, biotite, grunerite, and garnet appear in the deep zone. The marked difference between this apparent zonal change and the more nomal change to a copper zone is quite explainable if already existing pre-Cambrian veins have been locally metamorphosed by a Tertiary intrusive. The chief obstacle to this explanation is the evidence that mineralization cuts Laramide intrusives, but evidence on this point is conflicting as indicated by Crosby's observations and summary. This is not the first instance of a problem in determining the time-relationship of mineralization to a spatially associated intrusive. At the Noranda mine veins of chalcopyrite extend into a diabase dike which apparently cuts the ore, although Price2 concludes that the ore is later. However, at the Normetal mine diabase of a similar dike is thought3 to intrude the orebody but is cut by stringers of chalcopyrite. In the Sullivan Mine, B. C.,4 galena follows a fracture in a larnprophyre dike which, itself, cuts the main orebody. In the Sudbury district dikes of olivine diabase are clearly younger than the nickel ore, yet where they cut the Creighton orebody they contain stringers of chalcopyrite. In the laboratory, Hawley5 has developed veinlets of sulfide (chalcopyrite) it] silicate gangue by heating specimens of ore in a stream of H2S at 410 °C. From this and other evidernce. it seems clear that sulfides can be transferred from one site to another — at least through short distances — at temperatures well below their melting points. It would seem then that even if sulfide Mineralization in the Gem stocks can be shown unequ ivocably to be later than the intrusive the possibility of "remobiliza tion" need not be more than local. Thus the zonal relationships are quite in accord with a pre-Cambrian age for original deposition of the lead, zinc, copper, silver, and uranium in the Coeur d'Alene district. REFERENCES 1. A. I would like to ask Bob Merrill whether he considers that horizontal concave curvature of a slope has any stabilizing effect, such as Jenike 1 suggested several years ago. The stabilizing effect is due to the restraint offered to radial movement by the curvature. We found in laboratory tests that if we constrained the rock with the same stresses as those measured in the pit then it would sustain a maximum stress about two or four times greater than when the same rock type was unconstrained. We are therefore definitely of the opinion that a constrained situation in a slope is favorable towards stability.

This paper reviews geostatistical work in a coal deposit performed jointly by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners. The study objective was to Predict more accurately the inseam sulfur values of the deposit for the purpose of future emission control. Based on initially available 112 DDH information, variogram models were developed for sulfur, ash, and thickness for the entire deposit. The deposit was then kriged using 333 m x 333 m panel size. Kriging produced better results than conventional isopachs. The estimation variance information obtainable from geostatistics was then used to improve development drilling activities that were underway. This effort was successful. Up-to-date experience on the use of conditional simulation of the deposit appears promising for future emission control strategy development

THE province of Saskatchewan, situated in the center of the Great Plains region of Canada, has, like most prairie areas, an essentially agricultural economy. Most of its population of about 860,000 is located in the southern half of the province in the farming and ranching areas. To the north of the prairie is a broad forested belt supporting a considerable timbering industry, and the northern one third of the province is glaciated pre-Cambrian rock formation. This latter area is, relatively barren of vegetation, but the presence within it of a considerable variety of radioactive, noble and base metals, and industrial minerals has been shown by prospecting in recent years.1 Glacial Geology The Keewatin ice sheet, considered to have accumulated in the country to the west of Hudson Bay in Pleistocene time, covered at its maximum advancement almost all of Saskatchewan and extended south of the international boundary. Only in the Cypress Hills in the southwest and around Wood Mountain in the south central portion of the province did the preglacial formations escape the action for this glacial period. The bedrock of the plains and forest areas therefore is overlain by moraines and modified glacial drift, which vary in thickness from a few feet to 400 or 500 ft.2 Glacial action in the pre-Cambrian area of the province was largely erosional, most of the more recent formations and some of the pre-Cambrian rock being transported out of the area to the south and west. It has been estimated that about 13 pct of this area is composed of lakes and rivers not too adaptable to rail or water transportation, so that until the use of aviation for exploration purposes became general; development of the area was slow. To the south, the heavy. mantle of glacial drift has to some extent deterred the discovery of industrial minerals in the bedrock underlying the forest and prairie regions.3 At the same time, this drift contains numerous deposits of those most elementary and necessary industrial minerals, sand and gravel. Sedimentary Basin The major feature of the sedimentary deposits underlying the plains regions is the basinal structure known as the Moose Jaw syncline, which runs from the southeast corner of the province in a northwesterly direction. To the west. of this syncline the formations curve upward, then have been faulted and further upthrust to appear at the surface in the foothills of-the Rockies in Alberta; to the east and north they curve upward into Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan, but the surface contacts are covered mostly with glacial drift.2,3 The axis of the syncline dips to thee southeast, so that there is also an upward trend of the formations along the axis to the northwest. In illustration of the regional structure underlying the province, the pre-Cambrian basement has been logged in drillholes at the following depths in several locations: Ogema (south central), 9390 ft; Gronlid (northeast), 2599 ft; Vera (northwest), 4422 ft; Big River (north northwest), 2348 ft. Fig. 1 indicates the general surface geology of the province, ignoring such glacial overburden as may overlie many of the bedrock formations. Also indicated is the approximate location of the axis of the Moose Jaw syncline.4 Industrial Minerals Clays: The province is fortunate in possessing a widespread distribution of clays of ceramic value, ranging from those used for heavy structural products to the high grade pottery and china clays. Shales suitable for brick and tile production are found in the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary formations across the south of the province where the glacial drift is thin or nonexistent. Many deposits of glacial lake clays suitable for such wares are found scattered over the rest of the province south of the pre-Cambrian area. The Whitemud formation of the Upper Cretaceous is a narrow sedimentary, band of secondary clays found intermittently, at points, across the, south of the province where glacial action did not disturb or remove them.8 In the southwest corner of the province, around Eastend in the Frenchman River valley, the refractory clays of this formation are contaminated somewhat with iron compounds or other alteration products of basaltic rocks. This eliminates the use of those clays in true whitewares, as they fire to creamy buff shades at the lower temperatures and to a blue-specked grey at cone 8 to 12, (2280°F to. 2390°F), the range commonly used in firing whiteware. However, for use in the production of colored artware, caneware, stoneware or crockery, and sewerpipe, this type of clay makes an excellent body that requires little or no addition of flint, feldspar, or other fluxing materials such as are required in the higher class of ware.9 It is not a grade of clay that can be shipped great distances to the manufacturing centers, but a market for considerable tonnages has developed at nearby Medicine Hat, where cheap natural gas is available for the firing of the ware. Farther east in the south central portion of the province, the clays of the Whitemud formation are generally more refractory and white burning. The formation is divided into three zones, consisting of white clays, brown shale, and white sandy clays.

Conclusions drawn by previous research workers with reSPect to the relation between Pressure gradients and/or velocity and oil recovery obtained by laboratory water flood tests have been in disagreement probably due to variable procedures and unnatural conditions and materials. The Bradford Laboratory of the Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association as part of its secondary recovery research program has conducted nineteen water floods on two long cores of widely differing characteristics in an attempt to clarify this relationship and make it an aid in predicting flooding pressures in the field. Unlike previous research procedures the present experiments were conducted with the aim of duplicating field conditions as closely as possible by using long unextracted consolidated cores, a live crude, and natural brines for both flooding and, connate water content. Also, the pressure gradients and flooding velocities were representative of field conditions where similar sands were being flooded. Eleven floods on one core and eight floods on the other core showed increased recoveries and lower residual oil saturation with increased flood pressure gradients and flood velocities. A marked decrease in recovery was obtained from both cores at very low flood velocities. This pressure versus recovery relationship is shown to hold up to the point of water breakthrough and also up to the 100 and 1 produced water to oil ratio point. It is not known when the practice was tried intentionally for the first time, but its beneficial effects were noted in the annual production rate of the Bradford field as early as 1907. The practice was illegal in Pennsylvania until 1921. Early water floods in the Bradford field usually consisted of shooting or splitting the casing secretly to permit subsurface waters to enter the producing sands under hydrostatic head. As it was noted that the benefits of water flooding seemed to be proportional to the quantity of water dumped into the well many also began to utilize surface sources after the practice became legal. It was probably during the middle 20's before many producers realized that the pressurehead of the water upon the producing sand determined the rate and quantity of water that would enter the sand. Hence, rate and quantity of production appeared to be a direct function of input pressures. By 1927 a few producers had ventured the installation of pressure pumps in order to increase water-input rates and production through the combination of hydrostatic and hydraulic pressures. The adoption of pressure flooding and the "five-spot" drilling pattern in the Bradford field were essentially simultaneous. Water-input pressures in 1930 seldom exceeded 300 p.s.i. at the well head or 1100 p.s.i. at the sand face. Since that time, water-flood producers in the Bradford-Allegany fields have gone to higher and higher pressure until today 600 p.s.i. at the well heads is called a low pressure flood. Many high pressure floods now operate at 1300-1400 p.s.i. at the well head. The limiting and advisable pressure at the sand face has been pronounced as that pressure just under what is required to lift the overburden or to cause formation parting: According to this rule any water flood operation utilizing well-head pressures nearly equal in pounds per sq. in. to 1.1 times the average depth in feet to the top of the producing sand would be considered as a high-pressure flood. Despite the higher pressure trends in the Bradford-Allegany field operations and the results of early laboratory water flooding research, the desirability and benefits of high input pressures are still questioned by many operators, particularly in midwestern water flood operations. The present paper recounts a series of 19 laboratory water floods using two long, consolidated cores of widely differing characteristics saturated with live crude and flooded with oil field brines in an effort to simulate field conditions under • various pressure gradients and flooding velocities. It seemed particularly desirable to bring out the grain size of the steel, which is indicated in the ordinary etching processes chiefly by the change in orientation of structure from grain to grain. After various attempts, a fairly successful method has been found, which is here presented in the hope that it may be of use to those who have occasion to examine these steels in the heat-treated condition. The specimens worked with have been mostly chrome-nickel steels heat treated (that is, hardened and tempered) to a Brinell hardness of around 300. A few experiments with other specimens will be referred to later. Briefly, the method employed consists in etching the steel about 10 min. in a fresh solution of picric acid in ethyl alcohol, and then rubbing off the smudge of carbonaceous matter on moist broadcloth. Different samples of almost identical analysis; heat treatment, and physical properties (including resistance to impact) respond quite differently to this treatment. In some, the grain boundaries are developed quite readily, while iii others, especially ill those whose grain is unusually fine or in which the final hardening heat, has not quite obliterated the previous crystallization, the results are more obscure. The exact time of etching to secure the best results also differs for various samples, and the greatest success is usually attained by a process of "tinkering." Such a process is illustrated in a series of micrographs, the first six of which were taken at a magnification of 300 diameters.

Iraq, formerly called Mesopotamia in Asiatic Turkey, became a kingdom under British Mandate after the world war and is expected to gain its independence in 1932 when it enters the League of Nations. The kingdom is shown on Fig. 1 in its relations to neighboring countries, to the Mediterranean Sea and to the Persian Gulf. It is slightly smaller than the State of Texas with its capitol, Baghdad, inland about as far from the Persian Gulf as Breckinridge, Tex., is from the Houston Shipping Channel. The oil fields lie 180 to 225 miles north of Baghdad, or about as far as from Breckinridge to Oklahoma City, and about as far from the Mediterranean as Fort Worth is from Hobbs, N. M. A narrow-gage railway runs from Basra, the Persian Gulf port, to Baghdad. From there another narrow-gage runs into the Kurdish hills east of the Tigris to Kirkuk. A standard-gage, part of the old Berlin-Baghdad system, follows the west bank of the Tigris northward from Baghdad to Baiji, a village about 100 miles south of Mosul. No railway exists between Iraq and the Mediterranean, though the Anatolian Railways in southern Turkey come to within 50 miles of the Iraq frontier and 120 miles of Mosul. Surveys have been completed for a railway through British Mandates from Haifa to Baghdad as well as for a railway through French Mandated Syria from Tripoli to Abu Kemal near the Iraq border. Wagon roads, excepting those constructed by the oil companies, are few and indifferent in Iraq and no road exists across the desert to the Mediterranean, but contrary to prevalent beliefs the surface is firm and free from sand dunes so that motor cars can go almost anywhere in dry weather, with ease. Frequent motor car and airplane service exists between Baghdad and the Mediterranean ports and motor car service may be had between Kirkuk and Nisibin, Turkey, where on two days each week through Wagons Lits service is available to Paris. Baghdad is about 21 days distant from New York City with present transport facilities. CANADA'S oil production is obtained almost entirely from the Turner Valley gas and oil field, in the Province of Alberta. This field, about 30 miles southwest of the city of Calgary and approximately 115 miles north of the United States border, supplied 92 per cent of production in Canada during 1937. In 1938 considerable development took place in this field and total production for the year amounted to 6,688,716 bbl., an increase of 3,922,146 bbl. over the production in 1937, which increased the percentage of production to approximately 97 per cent of Canada's total. In the British Empire, Canada's production is thus comparable to that of Bahrein Island and Burma, each of which produced approxi-mately 7,800,000 bbl. in 1937, being second to Trinidad's production of 15,500,000 bbl. The total production of the British Empire in that year amounted to 2.07 per cent of the world's total. HISTORY Development of the Turner Valley field commenced in 1913, when a well was started near a gas seepage on the banks of the South Fork of Sheep River in the central part of the Valley. This well found small quantities of a light crude oil in beds of Upper Cretaceous age and pre-cipitated a wild boom in 1913-1914 which ended with the beginning of the Great War in 1914. A small amount of drilling was done in the years from 1914 to 1922 and a few wells found small crude-oil production in the upper sands. In 1922 a few wells were started, including the Royalite Oil Company's No. 4 well (R, Fig. 1), which became the discovery well of naphtha pro-duction from the Paleozoic limestone. In October 1924, this well was completed at a depth of 3740 ft., being approximately 300 ft, in the lime-stone, with an initial flow of 600 bbl. of 72° A.P.I. gravity naphtha and 20,000 M cu. ft. of gas per day. Intense activity was not started until the latter part of 1928, when the Okalta No. 1 well (Q, Fig. 1) was drilled, with an initial production of 500 bbl. of naphtha per day. This well was only 1 ¼ miles from Royalite No. 4, but it was approximately 1300 ft.

Among a host of challenges dictated by the explosively developing scientific and technical revolution, the improvement of control and management is one of the most essential problems. This problem is also of far-reaching importance for the oil and gas industries. An oil and gas extracting complex is an involved multilink system characterized by a great number of elements and by intricate interconnections between these elements. Of paramount importance for these systems is the quality of control. Any deviation of the control from the optimum reduces the effectiveness of the system and deteriorates its basic technical and economic factors. In case of large systems, even a relatively small deviation from the optimum may result in considerable material and power losses. Optimization of control of large production systems is therefore one of the basic means to enhance their effectiveness. The present paper discusses a development control problem for a multilayer gas deposit using the method of simultaneous exploitation of several strata by means of a single well. The optimum control is achieved by determining the dynamics of changes in the number of producing wells in a reservoir with regard to the depth of occurrence of these reservoirs as well as the difference in the time of introduction of the wells from drilling and their transfer to another reservoir. A mathematical model was constructed for the problem under consideration and a method was given to solve this problem. The problem was dealt with under the assumption that either each of the reservoirs or a part of them have vertically overlying areas and that there is no hydrodynamic interference between the horizons. Although a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. Characteristics and Requirements of Solders in General General Physical Properties.—When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.—The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. Background Research on the respiratory health of coal miners has focused predominately on the relationship between coal mine dust exposure and ventilatory function impairment (Lapp et al., 1972; Jacobsen, 1976), on the prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (Lainhart et al., 1969; Morgan et al., 1973), and on coal miner mortality (Ortmeyer et al., 1974; Rockette, 1977). Lesser attention has been paid to the effects of other mining exposures. For example, underground exposure to diesel exhaust emissions (Reger et al., 1980; Ames et al., 1982,1984). An omission in US coal mining research, however, has been identified by the US Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) as the failure to study the effects of inhaled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) thermal decomposition and combustion products (Seltzer, 1979). These products may be released in the mine environment by cable fires, cable explosions, smoldering cables, and conveyor belt fires. In addition to the OTA concern, recent findings of chronic respiratory conditions and other health complications resulting from exposure to PVC decomposition and combustion products in firefighters (Peters et al., 1974; NBS, 1980; NIOSH, 1982; Wallace, 1982), and in survivors of several large scale PVC-fueled fires (Dyer and Esch, 1976; Wallace, 1981, 1982), add immediacy to the concerns. PVC decomposition and combustion PVC decomposition is initiated at temperatures far below ignition (Hartstein and Forshey, 1974; Wallace, 1981). Hence, exposures to decomposition products from smoldering cables may be important health hazards in addition to cable insulation combustion products. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) appears to be the principle toxic substance from the thermal decomposition of PVC since up to 60% by weight is released as HCL (Barrow et al., 1979). HCL is released both as a gas and as an adsorbant on soot particles (Stone et al., 1973), thus allowing penetration of respiratory defenses. In addition, laboratory results indicate that phosgene (carbonyl chloride), a potentially lethal gas, may be produced in significant quantities from electrical arcing of wires covered with PVC insulation (Woolley, 1971; Brown and Birky, 1980). Health concerns related to PVC Toxic effects resulting from high level exposures to PVC pyrolysis and combustion products in animals (Cornish and Abar, 1969) and in humans (Wallace, 1981) is beyond question. Analyses have reported acute, or short-term, health effects resulting from exposure to PVC decomposition and combustion products (Peters et al., 1974; Polakoff et al., 1975). Recently, however, several studies have found that acute effects are often followed first by apparent healing, and then by delayed chronic effects. This pattern of consequential respiratory involvement among persons involved in major PVC-fueled fires has been noted in firefighters, specifically the 1975 New York Telephone Exchange fire (Dyer and Esch, 1976; Wallace, 1982), and the survivors of the 1977 Beverly Hills Supper Club fire (Wallace, 1981). An obstructive syndrome (low FVC and FEV1) was seen in 15% of workers three months following fighting a PVC-fueled fire (Colardyn et al., 1976). Long-term respiratory symptoms seen in studies of survivors of PVC-fueled fires include the bronchitis symptoms of cough and phlegm, and lung dysfunction (Wallace, 1981). Additional support for the thesis of longer-term respiratory effects resulting from PVC-fueled fires is derived from the finding that four persons who initially survived the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire died within nine months of the fire of severe respiratory impairment (Wallace, 1981).
