The solidification of poly crystalline zone-refined lead has been examined. A novel casting technique was used, with several advantages such as unidirectional heat flow, atmosphere control, and decanting of the liquid during any stage of growth. The experimental results show the separate existence of two textures, a (111) surface texture at the chill surface and a texture in the columnar zone, in the absence of conditions which would produce dendritic growth. WALTON and chalmers have most recently shown that the dendrite direction is the preferred axial orientation for the solidification of many metals in casting. Experimentally, for aluminum and lead, they showed that in the columnar zone the dendrite direction, <l00>, predominated, developing from an equiaxed chill cast layer that exhibited no preferred orientation. A reasonable description of the way in which grains closer to the dendrite orientation were able to encompass other grains was then set forth. For their materials, it was also shown that high superheats could inhibit a preferred axial orientation from developing, presumably by inhibiting dendrite growth. The observations of Rosenberg and iller, on the other hand, showed that zone-refined lead, cast under conditions similar to those of Walton and halmers,&apos; had a definite <111> texture in the columnar zone. However, no examination was made of the chill surface to find out if the columnar zone texture was independent of the orientations at the surface. Since the existence of preferred growth in Upure" lead is thus in doubt, a reexamination of the casting of zone-refined lead is presented here, using a novel casting technique. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS Zone-refined lead was prepared from two starting materials;99.999+pct supplied by ASARCO, and 99.999pct supplied by COMINCO. It has been reported recently1 that the hardenability and toughness of forging steels may be improved appreciably by the use of complex deoxidizers containing titanium, aluminum, and vanadium. In the light of these results, an investigation of similar deoxidizers containing various hardening and grain-refining elements was proposed. These deoxidizers included three manganese-silicon-aluminum-titanium al- loys with and without boron and calcium, three titanium-aluminum ferroalloys with vanadium, molybdenum and zirconium, respectively, an aluminum-zirconium ferroalloy, and plain ferroboron. Their approximate compositions are given in Table I, and the results obtained so far in the investigation of their effects on steel are presented in the later parts of this paper. Method of Using Deoxidizers The deoxidizers listed in Table I were used in three series of 0.40 per cent carbon steels, which were melted in a small basic-lined induction furnace and cast in the form of I7-lb. ingots about 2.75 in. square. The basic charge for each heat was 10 lb. Armco iron and 6 lb. of clean low-carbon sheet-steel scrap. When melted, this charge was deoxidized with 15 grams of ferrosilicon, then about 500 grams of pig iron was added to give the desired carbon content. After the pig iron was dissolved, nickel shot and high-carbon ferrochromium were added if required, and additions of 80 per cent high-carbon ferromanganese and 50 per cent ferrosilicon were made to provide the proper amounts of those elements. Aluminum was added to every heat 2 min. after the silicon, for grain-size control and preliminary deoxidation. One minute later the special deoxidizer was added to the clean bare surface of the molten steel, and 2 min. afterward the steel was poured into the ingot mold, using a hot-top and pipe-preventing compound after pouring to decrease the depth of the shrinkage cavity. The special deoxidizers were used mostly in the form of about ½ to¾-in. lumps,

The much-heralded Deep Ruth operation of Kennecott Copper Corp., at Ruth, Nev., is scheduled to become a producer by 1957. Inaugurated as a project in 1951, production was originally scheduled to start in 1953, but excessive water hindered shaft sinking. A revised schedule called for output by 1955, but again plans had to be changed. This time the change was to permit mining of an orebody that would have otherwise been lost because of block caving methods planned for the main deposit. The new ore is within the cave limits of the larger orebody, above the first production level. Ore will start coming from this new source in 1956, a year ahead of the principal operation. (See NEWS, page 344.) There is little doubt that current economic conditions and unforeseen expenditures for early shaft development will make the Deep Ruth a high-cost producer. Yet, some of the drawbacks of the Kennecott operation may be mitigated by the possibility that additional exploration will increase the already assured 25 million tons of 0.83 pet copper ore. While Kennecott is missing out on the current high copper market and is thus left with a potentially narrowed profit, the predicted demand for copper has created an optimistic feeling. Its development is certain to enlarge known U. S. copper reserves and significantly extend the life of Kennecott&apos;s Nevada operations.

An evaluation of the operating performance of a recently designed pneumatic centrifugal classifier is presented. This classifier has been modified from a separate air and feed input design to an entrained solids in air feed input. The evaluation first required determining the size distributions for the three streams (feed, fine, and coarse). Using size distribution data and mass flow rates, a size selectivity curve was calculated for each operating condition tested. This curve, in turn, was characterized by appropriate selectivity parameters (i.e., the equiprobable or cut size, the sharpness index, and the apparent bypass values). The variation of these parameters with classifier operating conditions was examined. From these evaluations, the "best" operating conditions for the classifier were then determined.

E. M. Fitchett (Johnstown, Pa.)—The fact stated by the authors that: "In the laboratory, without marked efficiency decreases, the authors have deposited zinc successfully from solutions containing as high as 1 g per liter of germanium," (p. 465, paragraph 3) is most unusual. A similar statement is made in the summary and conclusions: "Germanium alone, within normal operating limits does not cause large efficiency losses." The limits are not defined. These facts are directly contrary to much of the published history on the effect of germanium in zinc electrolysis. A description of the conditions leading to such a successful electrolysis would be of interest to all engaged in the production of electrolytic zinc. It is unfortunate that the authors of this paper did not determine the actual concentration of germanium and cadmium in the solutions which they electrolyzed after a zinc dust purification. This purification will take out a variable amount of these impurities, depending upon the composition of the dust, type of agitation, presence of activating agents, etc. Probably every electrolytic zinc plant in this country has accurate methods, both wet and spectrographic, for determining germanium and cadmium. These specific methods, adopted from the standard analytical literature, are often available to educational institutions for the asking. The headings of Fig. 2 and of the two tables, with their definite concentrations of germanium and cadmium (which are not so definite according to the footnotes) could possibly be somewhat misleading, since the actual amounts of germanium and cadmium present during electrolysis are not known. Even the 1 hr electrolysis time might be too short for a study of this type; 12 or 24 hr tests might be much better. Commercial solutions have been known that gave over 90 pct ampere efficiency during the first hour of electrolysis, but no metal at all after 24 hr.

GAYLER, Teddington, England (written discussion).-At the National Physical Laboratory, the writers have made a number of researches on the relation between the constitution and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of various types; the results obtained were in good general agreement with those of the authors. The writers, however, did not think that increasing the copper content of sand-cast low-copper duralumin to 4 per cent. necessarily caused a drop in the elongation to 1.5 per cent., as stated on page 9. In the case of sand-cast copper-aluminium alloys they had obtained much greater elongation, in some cases as great as 13 per cent. in heat-treated castings. For example, in a sand casting containing 3.5 per cent. of copper, a strength of 12 tons per square inch and an elongation of 13 per cent. were obtained; in a casting containing 4.5 per cent. copper, a tensile strength of 13 tons, and an elongation of 9 per cent. were obtained. These values were the maximum; the elongation varied considerably, being as low as 5 per cent. in some cases. In the writers&apos; opinion, such variations are due more to unsoundness in the sand casting than to any other cause.

The commercial neutron-gamma log measures the intensity of gamma-rays produced by the interaction of neutrons with nuclei in the formation and in the bore hole. This measurement gives information concerning the distribution of neutrons around the neutron source, and in particular gives information on porosity or fluid content. Another type of information is contained in the frequency or energy spectrum of the neutron capture gamma-rays. The capture gamma-rays of each element, in fact of each isotope, have only those energies characteristic of that isotope.&apos;" The neutron capture gamma-ray spectrum, if obtainable, would permit the identification of the elements producing the spectrum. Such information would have considerable value in oilfield exploration work if it could be applied practically in well logging. Experiments have been carried out at the La Habra Laboratory of California Research Cop. to determine the feasibility of a method of well logging in which neutron capture gamma-ray spectra are measured down hole. In these experiments, spectra were obtained for artificial formations under simulated borehole conditions, using actual borehole geometry. This paper will describe the experimental apparatus and methods and will present the spectrum curves for several formations. THEORY Basic Formulas The neutron capture cross section of an element is a measure of its tendency to capture neutrons. The macroscopic cross section, or cross section per cubic centimeter, of a material composed of several elements is the sum of the cross sections of the nuclei making up 1 cc of the material. This is expressed in the equation SB = Sn1s2, ..........(1) where SB is the macroscopic cross section, s, is the cross section of a nucleus of type i, and ni is the number of nuclei of type i/cu cm. If N is the number of neutrons absorbed per second by the composite material, then the number captured by element j is Ni = N nisi/SB = N nisi/Si ni si ......(2) When the nucleus captures a neutron, a new nucleus is formed, which is usually in an excited state and falls to its ground or unexcited state by emitting one or more gamma-ray quanta.* The emission spectrum has been measured for many elements (see Table 1). The intensity of gamma-rays produced by an element is proportional to the number of neutrons captured per unit time by the element, which in turn depends on the capture cross section of that element and the capture cross sections of the other elements present which are competing with the first element for thermal neutrons. In a small sample of material the number of neutrons, N, captured per second is N = ?SB, ..........(3) where $ is the thermal neutron flux and SB is the macro-scopic cross section defined above. The number of neutrons captured by element j is N1 = ?ni si = N ni si/SB . ......(4) The number of gamma-ray quanta of energy, E, pro-duced per unit time by element, j, is I(E)=Nni si/SB P(E) .......(5) where P(E) is the emission probability of element, j, for this gamma-ray energy. Borehole Effects The capture gamma-ray spectra of many elements have been measured accurately in academic and government laboratories. These measurements are made on small samples, and from these measurements the emission spectra of the elements are obtained.

THE year 1924 saw little change in the production of oil and gas it either Pennsylvania or New York. In the early months of the year the price of Pennsylvania crude oil, $4.00 to $4.50 a barrel, was sufficiently high to cause operators to lay plans for rather extensive drilling opera-tions. But when, in August, the price dropped to $2.85 a barrel, there was no inducement for new work and drilling was curtailed. In spite of the curtailment, however, the combined production of the two states for the year showed a slight increase over 1923, the production being 8;859,000 bbl. in 1923, and 8,901,000 bbl.1 in 1924. The increased production was due entirely to. the continued development of flooding operations in the Bradford field, all other oilfields showing a decline for the year. TABLE 1. Natural gas in Pennsylvania is fast being recognized at its true worth and the increased prices allowed &apos;the gas companies for their product induced quite a bit of new work. The relative importance of natural gas compared with manufactured gas is shown in Table 2.2

Edwin Ludlow, the forty-first President of the A. I. M. E., died in Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 10, 1924, after a brief illness of influenza followed by pneumonia. He was born in Oakdale, N. Y. (on Long Island), March 12, 1858, a son of William Handy and Louise (Nicoll) Ludlow. He attended Flushing (L. I.) Institute 1868-75, and Columbia School of Mines (N. Y.) where he was graduated with the degree of Engineer of Mines with the Class of 1879. After graduation, his first employment was as assistant engineer in river and harbor work on the Delaware River near Philadelphia. In 1913

The principal event during 1936 was the sale of Mosul Oilfields, Ltd. to Mosul Holdings, Ltd., a British company with French and American participation, and the expansion of its wildcat activities to untested structures on its West Tigris concession. Mosul Holdings continued the exploration of its low-gravity Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan-Qasab field. The Iraq Petroleum Company&apos;s systematic exploration and exploitation of its Kirkuk field was continued on a scientific unitized basis. Pressures and gas-oil ratios remained satisfactory. All wells were produced by flowing. A stabilization plant large enough to supply the 4,000,000-ton pipe line to the Mediterranean was completed at Kirkuk about the close of the year and only sweet oil is now being exported. The Khanaqin Oil Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co., Ltd., continued the normal exploitation of its Naft Khaneh oil field, refining and marketing through the Rafidain Oil Co., Ltd. for local Iraq market. This field lies partly on the Iraq side of the boundary and partly on the Iranian side, the latter portion being known as Naft-i-Shah. Only the Iraq side is considered in this paper. Slightly more than 30,000,000 bbl. of crude was produced in Iraq during 1936. The I.P.C. exported all crude sold outside of Iraq and showed an increase of about 2,500,000 bbl. over the preceding year. Crude production in Iraq for export in 1934 was 7,096,669 bbl.&apos;; in 1935 it was 27,014,904 bbl. and in 1936 it was 29,521,053 barrels.

THE best meeting ever held, was the opinion expressed by a number of those who attended the annual meeting of the Institute in New York, Feb. 18 to 21, and there was an atmosphere of friendliness and good fellowship about it that fully justified the feeling. In numbers it was not quite so large as last year and unless the Engineering Societies should build for themselves a new building it is probable that no meeting can be larger, in respect to numbers, than that held in 1928, which was only made possible by the circumstance that the eighth floor of the building happened to be, temporarily vacant at the time. The number of rooms available for -sessions that were provided when the building was built long ago proved inadequate, and it is only by the expedient of obtaining the temporary use of the board and committee rooms of other societies that it is possible to arrange for the over 40 sessions that must be spread over the four days of the meeting. The-fifth floor, where. a buffet lunch is served each-day, has reached its full capacity and it seems quite evident that any future development of Institute meetings must be along the lines of quality, not size.

ON JULY 12, 1921, S. S. Arentz, representative at large from Nevada, introduced in the House of Representatives, under the number H. R. 7736, a bill to revise, amend and codify laws of the United States relating to the location of mining claims on public domain, and other purposes. This bill had been drafted by a committee of consulting engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The immediate purpose of this introduction in Congress was to make it avail- able for general information and discussion. In pursuance of this purpose Mr. Arentz issued the following circular: This proposed codification and revision of the mining laws of the United States as received from a committee of mining and metallurgical engineers appointed by the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines was introduced in the House of Representatives by the undersigned (who has operated and developed mines throughout the West for many years). It is submitted to prospectors, mine operators and mining engineers, all of whom are affected and vitally interested in the subject with the hope that they will give this bill their careful consideration and study.

Part I of this chapter is concerned with the description of and metallurgical data pertaining to the flotation circuits used in the London mill of the Tennessee Copper Co., at Copperhill, Tenn. The ores treated at the London mill are massive complex sulfides, in which pyrrhotite and pyrite are the predominant minerals. Other sulfides are chalcopyrite and sphalerite; magnetite is also of economic value. The approximate mineralogical analysis of the ore is shown in Table 1. [ ] The chalcopyrite and sphalerite are closely associated with pyrrhotite as shown by the tracings of micrographs (Fig. I), which are representative of the mill feed. Fig. la illustrates the type of locking between pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite; Fig. lb illustrates the way in which sphalerite is attached. Thesephotographs indicate that it is not practical to break all of these attachments. Hence, in order to produce concentrates with satisfactory grades and recoveries, most of the locked chalcopyrite particles must be recovered into the copper concentrate, and the locked sphalerite-pyrrhotite particles must be separated from the iron concentrate. A copper concentrate, a zinc concentrate, and an iron concentrate are made. Typical metallurgical results are tabulated in Table 2. HISTORICAL In 1922 the London mill started as a copper concentrator, with a capacity of 300 tpd, and in 1926 an additional flotation circuit was added to recover the iron sulfide remaining in the copper tailing. In 1927 a zinc flotation circuit was installed between the copper and the iron flotation circuits. This procedure was not satisfactory because the iron recovery was low, due to the

HAVING taught you to make aqua fortis and to cleanse and reduce it to perfection, before I teach you the work of parting on a large scale, I wish now to teach you how to make an assay of the amount of gold present in a quantity of silver, so that you may proceed to your work with open eyes in order to become aware of mistakes when you have erred yourself or have been deceived by someone else. Therefore it is necessary to know very exactly, before you take it out, how much gold should be in your cucurbits from the weight of the silver that you put in. Thus you may see the gain or loss, if you had to deliver it to someone else or if you had bought it. If you did not do this you would proceed blindly in your work.

MUCH has been said recently concerning the depletion of the Lake Superior iron ore re- serves. Estimates given indicate a total life of the present known reserves of twenty to thirty years. Some argue that there is no need to concern ourselves about the possible depletion of the Lake Superior iron ore supply because foreign ores can be brought in to this country at a lower price than rich agglomerated ore can be produced from the lean domestic ores. Some fear, as a result of this, a displacement of the steel business from present districts to the Atlantic seaboard. Others show that foreign ores will be brought to interior points via the projected Great Lakes-St. Lawrence waterway. Others believe that the South, given better freight rates, will extend its iron and steel market into northern territory.

THIS short note on the probable character of the organic sulfur compounds in coal can do no more than indicate lines of research. We have no new experimental work to describe, nothing comparable in value with the careful studies of American coals by Powell and Parr1 and Yancey and Frazer.2 A study of the manner in which sulfur compounds exist in British coals (and their behavior on heat treatment) is rendered increasingly necessary by the fact that the British reserves of good coking coals of reasonably low sulfur content are fast being depleted. We believe that it is essentially by a study of the modes of formation, occurrence, and decomposition of the various types of inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in coal that it will be possible, with hope of success, to attack the problem of purifying coals, otherwise eminently suitable for coking, from these objectionable ingredients. Sulfur, so far as is at present known, does not normally occur in the free state in the coal conglomerate, but is chiefly distributed, irregularly, in three forms: 1. As primary constituents of the coal conglomerate, organic in nature and probably associated with those molecular complexes that have resulted from the degradation of the proteins of the plant tissues responsible for the formation of the coal mass. These constituents can be classed as "organic sulfur." 2. As metallic sulfides, e.g., iron pyrites. 3. As metallic sulfates, e.g., calcium sulfate and ferrous sulfate. (The occurrence of these compounds varies with the occurrence and degree of degradation of class 2.)

ORE control is a matter of planning and supervision based on a foreknowledge of the content and distribution of ore. The Inspiration orebody is predominately a copper-sulphide blanket, overlain by an oxidized zone of copper silicates, copper carbonates, and barren capping. Most of the ore is treated by leaching, and the optimum requirement of this method is the goal toward which the mining schedule is aimed. Both open-pit operations and underground mining are used. The problems of ore control at Inspiration are: 1-maintenance of metallurgical balance, 2-conservation of oxide ore, and 3-mining out of the orebody at an average grade which parallels that of the reserve figure. Prior to the fall of 1926 all of the Inspiration division ores were treated by flotation, but the mixed ores of the Live Oak-Keystone section carried too large a proportion of copper in the form of chrysocolla for satisfactory flotation. For this type of mixed ore the leaching process now in use had been worked out, and the plant was put into operation in the fall of 1926. The process is known as the ferric sulphate leach, and the leaching solvents contain both ferric sulphate and free sulphuric acid. Sulphide copper in the form of chalcocite is leached by the ferric sulphate, and the oxidized copper minerals are dissolved by the sulphuric acid. From the beginning of operations to the present time the plant has treated some 67 thousand tons of ore having an average copper content of 1.142 pet, of which 0.605 pct has been in the form of oxidized copper minerals. The plant is currently being operated at the rate of 11,500 tons per day, 7 days per week. However, this tonnage is produced in 6 days of mine operation. The average current grade is approximately 1 pct copper, of which about 50 pct is present as oxidized or acid-soluble copper. Close control of metallurgical procedures is a vital factor in operation of the plant and is in turn dependent upon careful regulation of feed. An excess of sulphide copper requires the presence of more ferric sulphate in the leaching solvents. On the other hand, an excess of ferric sulphate in the presence of a low sulphide feed seriously reduces the efficiency of electrolytic precipitation in tank house operations. This condition must be avoided at all costs. An additional factor must be considered. It is known that the sulphide content is predominant in the ore which remains in the reserve. To maintain the necessary sulphide-oxide proportion, so that the entire reserve will mine out at both a grade and a sulphide-oxide ratio that will be permissible throughout the remaining life of the property, it is obvious that the oxide reserve must be currently preserved to as great an extent as possible. Fortunately much of the oxide reserve is found in the open-pit operation. This happy circumstance adds flexibility to the procedure and makes it possible to maintain the close regulation necessary to insure best overall results, both mining and metallurgical. The two ore streams from the pit and underground operations join at the coarse-crushing plant, and proper control must be exercised before the ore reaches this point. The open pit is currently providing about 55 pet of the ore and underground operations the balance of production. Both operations are under a single superintendent so that the closely interrelated problems may be more readily controlled. The paper summarizes the historical background of the pressure-volume-temperature analyses of reservoir fluids, the errors involved in both the sampling and testing of reservoir fluids, the type of information required of a PVT determination, and the field conditions that limit the application of any one analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on the necessity for approximating as closely as possible the liberation sequence occurring in the producing formation, flow string, and surface separators. A combined differential and flash or "composite" liberation is suggested as the best means of approximating this liberation sequence. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Petroleum reservoir engineering commonly is considered to be one of the newest fields of petroleum science, yet much work of a theoretical and intuitive nature was done many years before the modern techniques of reservoir analyses were developed. The period 1910-1924 saw considerable work in the field of reservoir behavior done by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This work:.&apos; although entirely theoretical, pointed out the importance of gas in the recovery of oil from the reservoir. The statement by J. 0. Lewis that 20 per cent or less of the oil originally in place in a pool was recovered from the ground under uncurtailed production conditions caused some operators to re-examine and modify their production methods. However, though these works showed methods of production that have subsequently resulted in greater oil recoveries, they in general went unnoticed, even though there was a fear that the nation&apos;s petroleum resources were being exhausted. The period 1924-1933 saw the industry take considerably more interest in reservoir behavior because of an unfounded fear of its inability to replace oil reserves, the possibility of government regulation, and the energy of one man, Henry L. Doherty. Doherty aroused heated discussions in the industry concerning conservation. To prove or disprove his theories the first experimental work on the reservoir behavior of petroleum was undertaken. The papers of Dow and Calkin,&apos; Beecher and Parkhurst," and Mills and Heitheckere are classics although their experimental procedures were crude. These papers proved that the properties of petroleum in the reservoir are quite dissimilar to the properties measured at the well head. Gas dissolved in the oil phase was recognized as having considerable importance as had been predicted by the earlier theorists. Slightly later Miller and his co-workers assembled the first text correlating all the known data on the reservoir behavior of petroleum and used, these data to show the economic value of conservation. Quantitative application of pressure-volume-temperature analyses of reservoir fluids was given in the paper of Coleman, Wilde, and Moore"; this work showed that with sufficient laboratory and production data prediction of reservoir behavior was possible. § 1 Introduction.—This paper gives the results of our micro-graphic determinations of the position of Ae3 in a series of 14 hypo-eutectoid steels of varying carbon content, one of them very rich in phosphorus, and of SEe for one hyper-eutectoid steel. We have proceeded chiefly by noting the temperature at which the reabsorption of the pro-eutectoid element is found to be complete after a 30-min. holding, but in part also by noting the temperature at which its precipitation begins. Observations on these same steels by Messrs. Burgess, Crowe, and Rawdon, of the United States Bureau of Standards, are given in a paper1 issued simultaneously with this, while in a third paper2 one of us compares these data with those of earlier observers. These three papers are treated as one whole by numbering their sections, tables, and illustrations continuously, and by setting the folding plates of micrographs at the end of the last paper. Notalion and Definitions.—Following Osmond&apos;s development of Tschernoff&apos;s notation, in which " Ac3 " is the upper limit of the hypo-eutectoid part of the transformation range as observed in heating up, and " Ar3 " is that same limit as observed in cooling down, and following the usual custom of calling the upper limit of the hyper-eutectoid part of that range " SE," we may go farther and call this latter limit " SEc" when observed in heating up and " SEr " when observed in cooling down.
