THE members of the society are doubtless aware that the production of American Bessemer steel works is constantly increasing ; that the same converters and machinery are doing more work every year. This enlarged output is due to various causes, chiefly the following: 1st. Better organization-better knowledge on the part of both managers and men, of the plant and the process ; of the way to economize the more exhausting labor, and of the arrangement of the details of labor and operations so that they shall not conflict; also, more pluck-a greater willingness to take risks, or, more properly, such an intimate knowledge of the nature and capacities of the refractory tory linings in various stages of disrepair, and the probable be- . havior of the fluid metal at various stages of its treatment, that the precise nature of the risk may be better known, so that the works may be crowded to their full capacity. In the early practice, after getting four or five consecutive heats in a day, the men preferred to "let well enough alone," and to devote the remaining time to preparation for another turn. Now, thirty, and sometimes forty heats are regularly made during the twenty-four hours, day after day, without the frequent occurrence and without the fear of breakdowns or "messes," as the spilling of steel charges was graphically named in Sheffield. 2d. As permissible explosives and electric detonators are now generally recognized as the only safe means of blasting in coal mines, this paper is limited to their use. Causes of Misfires There are many different causes of misfires, but the principal ones are as follows: 1. Explosives which have deteriorated through improper storage either at the storage magazine, the distributing magazine, or at the working face. This is not only true of the explosive itself, but also of its detonating agent. 2. Improper priming and charging at the working face. This commonly occurs when the explosives are handled by inexperienced persons. 3. Improper methods of tamping; the leg wires of the detonator may be abraded or broken by the tamping bar or stick, thereby causing a short or broken circuit. 4. Faulty leading wire, or electrical apparatus of insufficient strength to explode the detonator. Prevention of Misfires Storage is an important factor, especially with permissibles of a nitrate or ammonia base. Both explosives and detonators should be stored in substantially built, fire-resisting magazines and should be situated so that the minimum amount of moisture and heat is present. They should be so constructed that a constant supply of fresh air enters; the floor of the magazine should be raised to permit the circulation of air under the stored explosives. Boxes should be stored top side up and in such a manner that the old explosives are used before those of a later delivery. This eliminates chance of deterioration from lengthy storage. Detonators should be similarly handled and stored. The distributing magazine stock should be regulated so that not more than one day's supply is on hand.

THE Fall Meetings of the Institute of Metals Division and of the Iron and Steel Division were held in Cleveland from Tuesday, Oct. 20, to Thursday, Oct. 22, as a part of the National Metal Congress. The registration at the technical sessions was something over 450 and the attendance at the joint dinner of the two Divisions on Wednesday evening taxed the capacity of the dining room. The president of the British Institute of Metals, W. R. Barclay, consulting metallurgist to the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.; of London, was in attendance at several of the technical sessions and was one of the after-dinner speakers at the banquet. He commented on the desirability of greater international amity and cooperation in these troubled times and of the role that technical societies, such as the A. I. M. E. and his own British Institute of Metals, can and indeed are playing in bringing this to pass, with their membership and contacts reaching to all parts of the world. He also referred to the new reciprocal membership arrangements in effect between the A.I.M.E. and the British Institute of Metals.

ON the steep slopes of the Kootenays, 15 to 20 miles south of Nelson, B. C., are a number of ore occurrences (Fig. 1). One that has many features of mining and geological interest is the Ymir Yankee Girl Gold Mines Limited. Discovery of this property was made in 1899 at an outcrop on the hillside, some 2500 ft. above the village of Ymir. This proved to be a branch vein 20 ft. long leading to two main veins, the Yankee Girl and the Spur (Fig. 5). The ore pattern as now delimited shows a remarkable increase in ore area with depth below the outcrop. This recent development is of interest particularly in view of the fact that the property was nearly condemned, professionally. Another interesting feature, which has a bearing upon its history, is the persistent excess of tonnage produced from period to period over visible reserves. This is not ascribed to lagging mine development, but to detailed vein characteristics, which we will endeavor to make clear by giving a description of the veins and their surroundings. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION Little interest was evidenced in this district until the building of the railway in 1893 provided easy access and the discovery of the Ymir mine [t] in 1896 attracted attention. As a result, the Ymir Yankee Girl group of claims was staked in October 1899. In 1907, an American syndicate took over the property and subsequently extended the 50-ft. drift and opened the present 400 and 540-ft. levels. In 1908, the Syndicate, without recording any shipments in the meantime, dropped its lease, which was taken up by H. L. Rogers, who bonded the Yankee Girl group. Rogers shipped 2622 tons of ore, mainly from the uppermost stope in the mine, which is reported to have yielded

MnSi alloys containing from 2 to 24 at. pct Si have been investigated by metallographic and X-ray methods. Contrary to published data, the temperature of the ß-manganese to a-manganese transformation is lowered by the addition of silicon. The existence of two additional intermediate phases E and ( is demonstrated. E, ranging in composition from 12 to 15.5 at. pct Si, forms by a peritectoid reaction between ß manganese and the second new phase, (. The latter phase is homogeneous at silicon contents from 16.2 to 18 at. pct and forms peritectically from the 0 phase and liquid. The eutectic reaction occurs between the ( phase and MnsSi rather than the ß phase and Mn3Si. As a result of this investigation, a modification of the manganese-rich section of the MnSi equilihrium diagram is proposed. The binary diagram of Mn-Si, according to Hansen,' Fig. 1, exhibits in the low-silicon region (below 24 at. pct Si) a peritectic transformation at 900°C of 0 manganese + Mn3Si to a manganese as determined by R. Vogel and H. Bedarff2 as well as a thermal effect at 980°C between 16.2 and 22.6 at. pct Si reported by the same authors. The nature of the latter transformation was unknown. K. Amark, B. Boren, and A. westgren3 reported indications that possibly four more phases existed in the range of 10 to 27 at. pct Si. The present investigation deals with the phase relations in the range of 2.1 to 17.7 at. pct Si. A few spot checks were conducted up to 23.84 at. pct Si. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Small experimental heats were prepared by induction melting in a vacuum furnace using argon as a protective atmosphere. The crucible was of commercial-quality magnesia. The furnace charge consisted of silicon metal and dehydrogenated electrolytic manganese. The typical analysis for these materials is shown in Table I. The molten alloy was tapped into 2-in.-square, 7-in.-long ingots. THE failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where, weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement, therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable; easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem in-volves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration, products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,1 which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion, which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard` mortars.

It is a well known fact that age-hardening alloys remain in a supersaturated, or partially supersaturated, condition only for limited periods of time at temperatures below the solvus. In order to develop optimum properties by subjecting the quenched alloy to precipitation or age-hardening treatment at a specified temperature, it is necessary that the cooling rate be sufficiently high to maintain the required degree of supersaturation of the solid solution. In practical applications the size and shape of the specimens obviously have considerable influence on the rate of cooling and there is need for more information on the effects of various rates of cooling. Cooling rates of quenched aluminum alloys generally have been established by the type of quenching medium, the temperature of the medium and the dimensions of the specimen. Except for the work of Roth3 little quantitative information is available on the measurement of cooling rates of aluminum alloys and the significance of the influence of various cooling rates upon the mechanical properties. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the use of the Jominy test for aluminum alloys (Table I). The material for this investigation consisted of extruded rods 1 1/4 to 136 in. in diam. The chemical compositions were as follows: The modified L-type Jominy specimen with dimensions shown in Fig I was selected as the most convenient means for obtaining a wide range of cooling rates. The standard Jominy specimen was not satisfactory because its cooling rate was not sufficiently high. The four flat surfaces machined at right angles along the length of the L-type specimen to a depth of 0.015 in. facilitated the hardness measurements. The specimens were machined from the extruded stock with no intermediate forging. New specimens were used for each aging experiment. The specimens were given solution treatments of 2 hr duration at recommended temperatures in a Hoskins furnace (Table 2). The temperature of the furnace was maintained constant to 3°C. No protective atmosphere was necessary because the thin film of oxide that formed on the surface of the specimens had no effect on the hardness measurements. AT

The fact that gray iron increases in volume, cracks and distorts upon repeated heating and cooling is rather conlmon knowledge. In ingot molds, Diesel engine pistons, carburizing boxes, continuous furnace parts, grate bars, stoker parts, and all castings that are subjected repeatedly to high and low temperatures, the phenomenon of growth presents a vital problem. Ingot molds distort and produce cracks which result in seams or laps and later appear as defects in the finished product. The heads of Diesel pistons frequently fail by cracking in a stellar shape. This is attributed usually to the result of permanent growth. Distortion and change of dimension of furnace parts frequently renders them entirely unusable. In chain grate stokers, mechanical difficulties frequently are caused by the growth of the links. In proper operation these links should never attain a temperature sufficiently high to start growth; nevertheless, some have grown in. on an 8-in. length when improperly operated. Even though the phenomenon is generally known there still exists a deficiency in the explanation of the mechanism of this growth. The field of investigators of this subject has a decided variation in opinion concerning the causes. The problem is of sufficient importance therefore to warrant further consideration. Review of Published Work Since the published work, particularly the European, contains much detail, only the outstanding results and conclusions of the investigators will be reviewed. The pioneering investigations of Outerbridge in 1904 and 1905 brought forth the conclusion that growth was not a function of chemical or crystallographic changes but was a result of the formation of fine hair cracks. These cracks are supposedly due to a nonuniformity of thermal expansion and contraction which ruptures the structure of the material. More recently Benedicks and Lofquist presented a purely mechanical theory, which is similar to that of Outerbridge. The Island of Trinidad has much the same geological history as the continent of South America. There are present in this area Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary rocks, which were deposited in a basin covering eastern Venezuela and Trinidad, very much as rocks of the same age were deposited in the Maracaibo Basin in western Venezuela. Along the north coast there are metamorphosed and semimetamorphosed Cretaceous rocks which are found as semicrystalline limestone, schists and quartzites, etc. Both the Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks are petroliferous and are responsible for the production of oil in Trinidad and eastern Venezuela. The geological column in the oil-bearing region of Trinidad is shown below.

During the past few years the author has had an opportunity to examine a number of base-metal mines in the western United States, France and Spain. Nearly all of these mines produced some silver, and laboratory studies of the relationship between the silver and the various base-metal minerals in the ore have given some interesting and, it is to be hoped, enlightening facts. As this work was undertaken primarily to ascertain the amount of silver chemically associated with, not controlled by, the various base-metal minerals, the laborious and not always satisfactory method of picking out "pure" samples of each mineral from many localities was employed. However, the results obtained have justified the time that has been spent. Not only have the conclusions arrived at in different mining areas been in accordance with one another but in many instances they have afforded scientific support or explanations for much of the knowledge that operators in the various camps have acquired by practical experience. Although many of the conclusions are not new, many of the facts are, and the results, if they do nothing else, serve to confirm the findings of some of the other workers in this field, particularly the work of Nissen and Hoyt1 and of F. N. Guild2. Dr. S. G. Lasky3 has suggested a novel method for determining from a series of algebraic equations the amount of silver controlled by each of the base-metal minerals but I doubt very much whether his method can be justified, chiefly because there appear to be more variables to be considered than the few that appear in his equations. A process has been developed to refine high-grade commercial aluminum to 99.99 pct purity. This enzploys precipitating titanium, vanadium, and zirconiu~ as borides. The upgraded liquid is partially crystallized under conditions that prevent massive freezing. The resulting crystals are compacted and washed free of adhernig impure liquid aluminum by melting the top crystals while draining off the liquid. Finally, the bottorn portion of the crystal bed is melted and removed as the pure product. Leakage from the crystallizat~on vessel is prevented by a layer of alumina granules that are not wetted by the aluminum. ALUMINUM of 99.99 pct purity is desired in a variety of applications. These include electrolytic capacitors, catalyst carriers, decorative trim for automobiles, aluminum powder, and high-strength alloys. This market was for many years filled by refining commercial-purity aluminum in a three-liquid-layer electrolytic cell of the type originally proposed by Hoopes. To meet the expanding need for lower-cost high-purity aluminum, a refining process based on chemical precipitation and fractional crystallization was developed. The availability of this super-purity metal was announced in November 1961, and three patents1-3 relating to the process were issued in 1965. An alternate process, comprising continuous fractional crystallization of a portion of a liquid-aluminum feed stream under conditions of strong agitation at the surface of the growing crystals, was published by Dewey4 in 1965. Earlier proposals by Larsen 5 and by Regner6 also emphasized the advantage of rapid agitation of the melt in the region of the crystallization zone. johnson 7 more recently proposed extracting purified aluminum from an alloy by mixing crystals of pure aluminum into the molten alloy, allowing them to grow, and removing the pure aluminum as by casting. Aamot's 8 recent patent describes a freeze refining process that involves controlled partial freezing against cooled moving retort walls. The Alcoa process to produce high-purity aluminum is schematically described in Fig. 1. Relatively pure aluminum is treated with boron in a furnace (a) to precipitate high melting point impurities, the supernatant liquid is transferred to a crystallization vessel (b), the liquid is partially crystallized with mechanized "tamping" (c), the remaining impure liquid is tapped out and the crystal bed partially and directionally re-melted to wash the underlying crystals (d), and the balance of the crystals is melted and withdrawn as high-purity aluminum (e). PRINCIPLES OF FRACTIONAL CRYSTALLIZATION Commonly encountered impurity elements form two types of systems with aluminum. Titanium, vanadium, and some other transition elements in periodic groups IV, V, and VI are the high melting point impurities. Initial solidification of aluminum containing small percentages of these elements will produce solid markedly enriched in them at temperatures slightly above the freezing point of high-purity aluminum. Most other elements, such as silicon and iron, produce eutectic type reactions with aluminum. In this case the first solid formed on initial solidification at temperatures slightly below the freezing point for high-purity aluminum is markedly depleted while the remaining liquid is enriched in these elements. The equilibrium change in composition during solidification of aluminum contaminated with silicon, iron, or titanium is illustrated in Fig. 2. ABSTRACT A simplified model was employed to develop mathematically equations that describe the unsteady-state behavior of naturally fractured reservoirs. The analysis resulted in an equation of flow of radial symmetry whose solution, for the infinite case, is identical in form and function to that describing the unsteady-state behavior of homogeneous reservoirs. Accepting the assumed model, for all practical purposes one cannot distinguish between fractured and homogeneous reservoirs fram pressure build-up and/or drawdown plots. INTRODUCTION The bulk of reservoir engineering research and techniques has been directed toward homogeneous reservoirs, whose physical characteristics, such as porosity and permeability, are considered, on the average, to be constant. However, many prolific reservoirs, especially in the Middle East, are naturally fractured. These reservoirs consist of two distinct elements, namely fractures and matrix, each of which contains its characteristic porosity and permeability. Because of this, the extension of conventional methods of reservoir engineering analysis to fractured reservoirs without mathematical justification could lead to results of uncertain value. The early reported work on artificially and naturally fractured reservoirs consists mainly of papers by Pollard,l Freeman and Natanson,2 and Samara.3 The most familiar method is that of Pollard. A more recent paper by Warren and Root showed how the Pollard method could lead to erroneous results,4 Warren and Root analyzed a plausible two-dimensional model of fractured reservoirs. They concluded that a Horner-type pressure build-up plot of a well producing from a fractured reservoir may be characterized by two parallel linear segments. These segments form the early and the late portions of the build-up plot and are connected by a transitional curve. In our analysis of pressure build-up and drawdown data obtained on several wells from various fractured reservoirs, two parallel straight lines were not observed. In fact, the build-up and drawdown plots were similar in shape to those obtained on homogeneous reservoirs. Fractured reservoirs, due to their complexity, could be represented by various mathematical models, none of which may be completely descriptive and satisfactory for all systems. This is so because the fractures and matrix blocks can be diverse in pattern, size, and geometry not only between one reservoir and another but also within a single reservoir. Therefore, one mathematical model may lead to a satisfactory solution in one case and fail in another. TO understand the behavior of the pressure buildup and drawdown data that were studied, and to explain the shape of the resulting plots, a fractured reservoir model was employed and analyzed mathematically. The model is based on the following assumptions: 1. The matrix blocks act like sources which feed the fractures with fluid; 2. The net fluid movement toward the wellbore obtains only in the fractures; and 3. The fractures' flow capacity and the degree of fracturing of the reservoir are uniform. By the degree of fracturing is meant the fractures' bulk volume per unit reservoir bulk volume. Assumption 3 does not stipulate that either the fractures or the matrix blocks should possess certain size, uniformity, geometric pattern, spacing, or direction. Moreover, this assumption of uniform flow capacity and degree of fracturing should be taken in the same general sense as one accepts uniform permeability and porosity assumptions in a homogeneous reservoir when deriving the unsteady -state fluid flow equation. Thus, the assumption may not be unreasonable, especially if one considers the evidence obtained from examining samples of fractured outcrops and reservoirs. One of the limitations of the 3-dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann pit optimisation algorithm has been the difficulty in calculating an optimum pit with variable wall slopes. The difficulties have been related to establishing various wall slopes without changing the sizes of the blocks used in the normal computation, but still retaining an optimum solution.

Recent developments in iron alloys containing nitrogen have indicated that this element may exert a considerable influence on the properties of the metal. This influence is not always in an undesirable direction and the indications are that nitrogen should be regarded as an alloying element, the amount of which should be subject to control, rather than as an inherently deleterious impurity. In controlling this element in liquid iron to the best advantage, it is necessary to have a reliable background of fundamental data pertaining to solubilities, rates of solution and chemical reactions of nitrogen in liquid iron. Obviously, the first step in such an investigation is the determination of the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron, and this has been the object of the experiments described in this paper. The solubility of nitrogen in solid iron has been measured by Jurich,' Sieverts,2 Martin,3 and Iwasé4 and the agreement among the first three inspires confidence in their results. No accurate determinations of its solubility in liquid iron have been recorded though several investigators have obtained approximate results. Leaching manganese-bearing materials with NaOH to remove caustic-soluble silica has been demonstrated as a method for up- grading manganese. Those materials containing opaline varieties of silica respond most readily. Spent leach liquors are regenerated by treatment with lime to precipitate calcium silicate and to reactivate the NaOH for leaching.
