MORE than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after effects, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U. S. Geological Survey in coopera-tion with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (1) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely -in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride, ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, or 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. Oil quenching of steel, in good commercial practice, is carried out using a great deal of agitation in the quenching bath. Many of the tests reported in the literature represent the results obtained on steels quenched into still oil. Scott1 describes three stages of cooling in liquid quenching baths, namely: "State 'A'— Vapor Blanket Cooling—In this, the first stage, a thin stable vapor film surrounds the hot metal. Cooling is by conduction and radiation through the gaseous film and is therefore relatively slow. "Stage 'B'—Vapor Transport Cooling— Termination of the 'A' stage is marked by wetting of the metal surface. Vapor forms copiously in bubbles and is carried away by gravity and convection currents to condense in cooler surrounding liquid. This is the fastest stage of cooling. "Stage 'C'—Liquid Cooling—The 'B' stage ends as the surface temperature of the metal approaches the boiling point of the quenching liquid. Vapor no longer forms, so cooling is by conduction and convection and the temperature difference is greatly decreased. This mode of cooling is slower than that of the 'B' stage." Mechanical agitation of the quenching medium will accelerate all three stages of cooling. The greatest effect, however, will be noted on stage ' B' because the removal of the bubbles from the surface of the steel will not be entirely dependent upon gravity and natural convection currents. The method employed in this investigation for evaluating the oils was the end quench test. The various oils were substituted for water as the quenching liquid and hardness determinations were made at various distances from the quenched end. Most of the tests were run using a 3/8-in. orifice with a 21/2-in. stream height. However, to check the effect of other velocities two additional conditions were used, namely: (I) A 3/8-in. orifice and I-in. stream height, and (2) a 1/2-in. orifice and a 31/2-in. stream height. In all cases the samples were suspended so that the quenched end was 1/2-in. above the orifice. Some tests were run on an NE 8740, .3,312, and a 4340 steel. The results obtained on these steels confirmed those obtained on the NE 9450 and have therefore been Omitted from this paper. The test bars were machined from 1/8-in. stock to I-in. diam by 4 in. long.

The recrystallization behaviors of two extruded and cold-drawn experimental sintered aluminum powder alloys, containing 1.75 and 3.0 pct Al2O3 by weight, were compared with that of extruded and cold-drawn commercially pure alumirzum. The kinetics of recrystallization of the alloys are described semiquantitatively. For the alloy containing 1.75 pct A l203 the rates of nucleation and of growth were also semiquantitatively determined. THE most striking property of aluminum alloys strengthened by a dispersion of Al2O3, the so-called SAP alloys, is their stability at elevated temperatures. One of the manifestations of this stability is their resistance to recrystallization after they have been cold worked. Most of the commercial grades of either the Swiss SAP or of Alcoa's Aluminum Powder Metallurgy Products have not been recrys-tallized after cold working, even when they are heated for a long time at a temperature near the aluminum melting point. Lenel, however, observed that the dispersion strengthened aluminum alloys with a larger spacing between the oxide particles than that of most commercial grades would recrys-tallize.1 It appeared to be of interest to further investigate the mode and kinetics of recrystallization of these alloys, and to compare their recrystallization behavior with that of commercially pure aluminum. Because homogeneous deformation of these SAP alloys in tension did not provide sufficient cold work to induce recrystallization, they were cold worked by wire drawing; the nonuniformity of this deformation unavoidably complicated the interpretation of the recrystallization studies. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Extrusions—Two types of sintered aluminum powder extrusions were used in this study. One type, designated AT-400, was produced from Reynolds atomized aluminum powder consisting of spherical particles averaging 3µ in diam and containing 1.75 wt pct of Al2O3. This powder was very similar to the R3M powder from which extrusions were previously prepared with an average spacing of 0.9µ between oxide particles.2 The second type, designated MD 2100, was produced from Metals Disintegrating Co. flake powder containing 3.0 wt pct of Al2O3, with an average flake thickness of 0.8µ. The average spacing between oxide platelets in MD 2100 extru- sions was 0.45µ.2 Powder compacts of 3/4-in. diam were extruded at 1000°F into 0.097-in. diam (AT-400) and 0.093-in. diam (MD 2100) wires by methods previously described.3 In order to compare the recrystallization behavior of sintered aluminum powder extrusions with that of wrought commercially pure aluminum 3/4 in. rod stock of 1100 F aluminum was extruded at 1000°F into 0.102-in. diam wire. Wire Drawing—Tungsten carbide dies were used for the AT-400 and 1100 F alloys. They had an included angle of about 15 deg and reduced the wire area approximately 7 pct per pass. Steel dies with an included angle of 11 to 13 deg and an average reduction per pass of 10 pct were used for drawing the MD 2100 alloy, because drawing this alloy through the carbide dies produced overdrawing defects. Heat Treatment—The cold-drawn wires were cut into small samples, and the deformed ends were etched off. The samples were each wrapped tightly in a single layer of aluminum foil, and individually isothermally annealed in a lead bath. Metallography—The modes and kinetics of recrystallization were determined by metallography. Mounted and polished specimens were anodized in a solution of 1.8 pct HBF4;4 examination under polarized light clearly revealed their grain structures. The recrystallized grains were generally much larger than those of the unrecrystallized matrix, and could clearly be distinguished because they alternated between maximum and minimum light reflection when the microscope stage was rotated, while the unrecrystallized matrix had a comparatively homogeneous "salt and pepper" structure. The fractional recrystallized volumes of the dispersion hardened alloy wires were determined by cutting and weighing of recrystallized and total transverse areas on photomicrographs. The recrystallized grains in the 1100 F alloy were too small to be cut out individually; therefore a combination of cutting and lineal analysis was used in this case. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Modes of Recrystallization—The modes of recrystallization of the three alloys varied widely. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1940 was slightly more than 15,000 bbl., a decrease from 1939 of about 36,000 bbl. This sharp decline has been caused largely by curtailed activities in the shallow pools in Clay County, where approximately 3000 bbl. was marketed off the lease during the year as against more than 37,000 bbl. in 1939. The flashy production found in 1938 in the Celina area has been short-lived and the area is essentially abandoned. Failure to find steady production has been the major factor retarding developments in the northeastern Highland Rim area. The Mississippi lime production in Scott and Morgan Counties continued to show a steady decline. The Tennessee production by counties is shown in Table I. Twenty-eight wells were completed during the year, four of which were commercial producers. The total footage drilled was 3I,214 ft. The more important wildcats are listed in Table 2; the distribution of 1940 oil and gas tests according to physiographic divisions is given in Table 3. Cumberland Platenu.—Thcre was one completion in the coal area of the state, a test that attempted to extend the Mississippi lime production in the Coon Hollow pool to the southeast in Morgan County. This test encountered only slight shows of oil in the producing horizons of the near-by Coon Hollow and Boone Camp pools. Some surface work was carried on by private interests during the year in Scott and Morgan Counties and two wells were spudded in early in 1941 The revival of interest in the Kentucky portion of the plateau will probably result in increased activity in this part of Tennessee during 1941. Several sizable blocks of acreage, some by major oil companies, are held in Scott, Morgan, and Cumberland Counties. Middle Tennessee.—The northeastern Highland Rim continued to be the most active area in the state with 20 completions, although this figure is about one third of the number drilled in 1939. Four oil wells, none with initial productions of more than I00 bbl., were completed in Clay, Fentress, and Pickett Counties. The producing horizons discovered in Pickett and Fentress Counties were in the "Sunny-brookJ' pays of Trenton age. The Clay County producer was an old test drilled deeper in which oil was found at 671 ft. in the upper part of the Stones River group of limestones, a common pay in this area. All four wells were drilled in or close to old shallow production. Deeper testing into the Knox dolomite group in this area was not particularly encouraging, although one well in Fentress County encountered some saturation at 1860 to 1869 ft. in the upper

WITH the gradual depletion of the natural-gas pools of the Kansas district, together with the uncertainty of further cheap fuel developments, some. of the western zinc companies turned to the coal fields, attracted by their permanency and the 'success of the Matthiessen & Hegeler Co. and the Illinois Zinc Co. Being then confronted with the problem of using a relatively high-priced fuel, although the ultimate' supply was very great, the fuel economies of the kilns and furnaces became of far more importance, and the more modern equipments, as a result, embodied distinct gads in this phase of the business. In addition, there have been some pronounced advances in the actual making of gas from these coals. Increased efficiency in gas making has contributed its share to lowering costs and those plants located in the higher priced fuel districts have probably been obliged to study these economies somewhat more closely. Naturally, many beneficial changes have resulted in both practice and apparatus in these sections. On, certain western coals, for instance, the actual saving in fuel consumption has been 50 per cent. By this is meant that, where about 1.75 tons were burned to smelt 1 ton of oxidized ore, 0.7 to 0.9 ton is now required. While comparisons by W. R. Ingalls1 of fuel economies in smelting in this country and Germany before the war may, in general, be correct, they do not appear to-do justice to the more progressive. American practice. It is doubtful whether German plants were substantially bettering these fuel ratios. Data furnished by Bender and Frams do not afford records averaging less than 0.9 ton coal per ton ore on materials from 40 per cent. to 50 per cent. zinc.

Scaled reservoir models have been used to study the effect of gravity on oil recovery performance in frontal-drive operations; namely, water, gas, or solvent flooding. The difference in density between the reservoir oil and the injected fluid causes their segregation, resulting in a non-uniform advance of the fluid front. In the laboratory flow tests, which simulated both five-spot and linear injection operations in flat reservoirs, the viscous, capillary, and gravity forces present in these operations were scaled. Dyed fluids were used so that the gross movement of the injected fluid could be observed. The studies covered a range of injection rates, formation thicknesses, and rock and fluid properties normally encountered in field operations. The results of the model tests indicate that the volume of the reservoir contacted by the injected fluid at its breakthrough into the producing well is less than that expected based on information which neglects gravity effects. This difference can often be as much as 80 per cent by gas or water injection in uniform sand bodies. Preliminary flow tests on a non-uniform sand body indicate that the uniformity of the flood fronts may in some situations be influenced to a much greater degree by permeability variations within the rock body than by gravity effects. The magnitude of fluid segregation due to gravity is controlled by the average injection rate, rather than day to day or week to week variations. INTRODUCTION One of the important factors controlling the oil recovery from a frontal-drive operation, such as water, gas, or solvent injection, is the volumetric sweep efficiency. This factor is a measure of the gross portion of the reservoir that is contacted by the displacing fluid. The volumetric sweep efficiency is influenced by gravity effects, well arrangements, and variations in rock permeability within the reservoir. The gravity effects are due to the displacing fluid being of different density than the reservoir oil. This causes the displacing fluid to move preferentially toward either the top or bottom of the formation. Non-uniform advance of the flood front can be caused by the relative positions of the injection and production wells. Variations in rock permeability also result in an uneven advance of the displacing fluid. Gas zones, representing paths of low resistance, may result in non-uniform movement of the injected fluid. The more uneven the advance of the displacing fluid, the lower is the volumetric sweep efficiency and thus the lower the oil recovery efficiency. The effects of well arrangement and permeability variations, upon the gross movement of the injected fluid have been the subjects of extensive investiga-ti0ns.1,2,3,4,5,6 Gravity effects have been recognized as being present in frontal-drive operations'.' but there has been little quantitative measure of their magnitude. Very likely the reason gravity effects have not been studied is that this problem does not lend itself to simple experimental or mathematical analysis. The development of reservoir modeling techniques has made possible a quantitative determination of the effect of gravity on fluid segregation and thus upon the oil recovery performance of frontal-drive operations. This paper presents a progress report on a laboratory investigation of gravity effects in fully liquid-saturated, horizontal, uniform as well as non-uniform systems. These results were obtained from scaled experiments on both linear and five-spot systems within the range of conditions normally encountered in secondary recovery operations. This study is concerned with the gross movement of the injected fluid to the time it first reaches the production wellbore. Therefore, it should be emphasized that the results of this paper can not be used to determine the effect of gravity segregation on oil recovery efficiency at abandonment conditions. SILICON, germanium, and tin occur with both the white tine-type structure and the diamond cubic structure. In the latter form these elements are semiconductors; in the former they are metallic. The metallic form of germanium and silicon is obtained only under high pressure.' For all three elements the transition from the semiconductor to the metallic state is accompanied by a decrease in the atomic volume of somewhat more than 20 pctily2 Table I. SOME mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a ques-tion of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will, attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be con-sidered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Tech-nically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing border-line ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composi-tion and presenting widely divergent physical properties. The province of Otago consists, roughly speaking, of the southern half of the South Island* of New Zealand. On three sides it is washed by the Pacific Ocean and on the north it abuts against Westland and Canterbury. It covers an area of over 20,000 square miles, and for the most part has an extremely broken surface; the narrow plains of the sea-board are bounded by the rounded foothills which in turn are overlooked by range after range of the snowy summits whose varied beauty has made the island known as the Switzerland of the southern hemisphere. The gold-fields are confined to the quartzose schists which, in a broad band, 70 to 75 miles wide, cross the district, extending in a northwesterly direction from the shore of the western ocean into the northern provinces. These quartzose schists are the characteristic rocks of Otago, and to their curious structure are due the interesting differences exhibited by the mining districts in the modes of occurrence of the gold. These rocks, which are almost unbroken over their full extent, have been divided by the Provincial Geologist, F. W. Hutton, into two series of beds, named respectively the Wanaka and Kakanui formations. The only reason given for this division is the desire " to divide such an enormous thickness of rocks in order that the map might display somewhat of the geological structure of the district." As Hutton and others have pointed out, there is in fact no dividing line. The changes noticeable in the ascending series of schists are very gradual, and are due to the slowly decreasing effects of metamorphism. Hutton estimates the thickness of the Wanaka series at as much as 50,000 feet, and the

CONFUSION appears to exist in the discussions of fan testing because engineers do not agree on what energy should be credited to the fan in certain cases, and because certain terms that are used in the discussions seem to have double meanings. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to discuss the useful energy that should be credited to the fan and the methods of determining this energy, and to suggest changes in nomenclature for the sake of clearness. The instruments commonly used in the measurement of fan pressures are the manometer, the static tube, and the impact tube. The static tube is a tube with small pinholes in it. When connected to one leg of the manometer and placed in the air current with the holes facing at right angles to the direction of the current, this tube causes the manometer to register the static pressure, unaffected by the impact of the air. The impact tube is a tube with an opening that faces the air current. When connected to one leg of the manometer, this tube causes the manometer to register a pressure which is the static pressure modified by the impact of the flowing' air on the end of the tube. If the static tube is connected to one leg of the manometer and the impact tube to the other leg, and both instruments are inserted close together in the air current, the static pressure is eliminated and the manometer registers the impact pressure. The efficiency of a fan is the percentage of the expended power utilized in useful work. The items to be included as useful work are a matter of convention, and as the conventions are not universal I feel that the matter is open to discussion.

Introduction This paper is a general description of current central Florida phosphate mining, beneficiation, and product transportation. It is directed and believed to be of interest to engineers not familiar with this industry. Deposit: The phosphate deposits of central Florida are generally located in a five county area which includes Polk, Hillsborough, Hardee, Manatee, and DeSota counties. Geologically, the deposit is of marine origin and is identified as the Bone Valley formation. This formation is Pliocene to Recent in geological age and overlies a Miocene limestone formation known as the Hawthorn. The Bone Valley formation sediments are regionally characterized by equal proportions of apatite, quartz, and clay. The clay is predominantly of the mont-morillonite family. On a local scale, however, the proportions of these three major constituents vary considerably. The phosphate occurs as the apatite mineral (Ca 10F2(PO4)(6) and with the clay and sand, the minable ore is commonly referred to as matrix. This matrix is overlain by unconsolidated overburden of sand and sandy clays, ranging in depth from 10 to 45 ft. The matrix usually occurs in fairly horizontal continuous beds from 3 to 25 ft in thickness. The bedded limestone formation lies directly below the matrix and is generally well defined. The phosphate particles range from 3/4 in. to 200 mesh (Tyler) in size. The phosphate particles coarser than 14 mesh are called pebble phosphate and those less than 14 mesh are termed flotation feed which, when beneficiated, subsequently become concentrates. Through mining and beneficiation, phosphate quality is measured in BPL percent which stands for bone phosphate of lime units. In subsequent chemical manufacturing, the quality is indicated by P205 content. The deposit is economically characterized by various ratios such as tons of product per acre and cubic yards handled per ton of product. Magnesium, iron, and aluminum content are also considered in evaluating ore reserves. These elements are often critical to the chemical fertilizer processes. Presently, an ore body is considered economically minable if it meets the criteria shown in [Table 1]. These, of course, are general guidelines and specific costs and returns on investment must be considered in each case for acquiring reserves. On a new grass-root venture, a 20-30 year life is generally expected with a mineral recovery of 80%. History and Uses Phosphate mining in central Florida began around the turn of the century. However, in the early days, only pebble phosphate was produced until about 1930 when technology was available to beneficiate the -14 + 150 mesh particles. The -150 or -200 mesh material was discarded as it is today. The basic processes for beneficiation are washing, scrubbing, desliming, sizing, and flotation. These basic unit processes are essentially the same today although many improvements have been developed since the early days. Phosphate is used primarily in the production of high analysis fertilizer chemicals, typical of which are triple superphosphate, monoammonium phosphate (MAP), and diammonium phosphate (DAP). Phosphate is also used in the production of food preservatives, dyes for cloths, vitamin and mineral capsules, steel hardeners, gasoline and oil additives, toothpaste, shaving creams and soaps, bone china dishes, plastics, optical glass, photographic films, light filaments, water softeners, insecticides, soft drinks, road fill, and livestock feed supplements. Florida produces over 80% of the nation's marketable phosphate rock and one-third of the world production, according to the US Bureau of Mines. This amounted to approximately 35 million tons in 1975. Exports of Florida phosphate rock were to such countries as Canada, Japan, West Germany, Italy, and India, with Canada and Japan being the major users. Almost 95 o of all outbound cargo shipped through the port of Tampa is phosphate rock or related products. Beneficiation Following is a description of Agrico's new Fort Green beneficiation plant which is typical of the newer large capacity plants being built in the field. Agrico's Fort Green mine was completed in 1975 and is located in the southwest corner of Polk County and is directly adjacent to Manatee, Hillsborough, and Hardee Counties. With some minor differences, Fort Green is typical of a modern central Florida plant. The rated capacity is 3,000,000 plus tons of product per year and this varies according to the richness of the ore being handled. A simplified flowsheet is presented in [Figs.1 and 2]. This plant is served by three draglines of the 40-cu-yd class. The phosphate beneficiation is usually divided into three major functional steps: (1) washing and screening to produce a pebble product and flotation feed, (2) feed preparation and (3) flotation to produce concentrates. The typical plant is similarly divided into these three functional areas. Washer: Briefly, the slurried matrix is pumped from two draglines simultaneously at a combined rate of about 20,000 gpm at 2000 tph (solids) to rotary trommel screens sized to make a 7/8-in. separation. ([See Fig. 1]-) The trommel oversize is sent to hammermills where it is crushed and returned to the trommel screens, or pumped to tailings if minor impurities (Fe203, A1203, MgO) are too high. The trommel undersize is pumped to 14 mesh stationary (static) flat screens. The flat screen over¬size is subjected to three stages of 14 mesh vibrating screening and two stages of log washing in order to produce a final pebble product. The pebble product (+ 14 mesh material) is conveyed by belt conveyor to a large on-ground storage pile. Pebble product is reclaimed through a tunnel and loading system below

It is well known by every one who has had to deal with boiler tubes that these are often seriously affected by a sort of corrosion, occurring as a local pitting, that frequently causes a perforation of the tube in a rather short time. The characteristic appearance of this corrosion is shown in Fig. 1. A very similar corrosion occurs in condenser tubes (Fig. 2).l A study of the microstructure or local chemical composition of the metal (iron 70:30 brass) fails to reveal any cause for this pitting. Of course one might possibly assume the starting point to be some oxide particle, causing an electrolytic local action, but this in no way explains the continued corrosion, progressing even when the assumed oxide particle must have disappeared. By the excellent work done by the Corrosion Research Committee of the Institute of Metals, and communicated, in October, 1923, to the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Newcastle-on-tyne, stress was laid on the faot that a content of entangled air has a very obnoxious effect. In the following correspondence, Sir George Goodwin stated that "engineers have, for a long time past, regarded air as the big enemy to be fought against in all questions of corrosion'72 and Kenneth Fraser pointed out that the most vital point is "the avoidance or removal of possibly the chief cause of present day corrosion, i. e. entrapped air and gases brought out of solution."3 In their reply, however, the authors state that they had "never for a moment believed that entangled air was responsible for the beginnings of corrosion, and express the opinion that the gradual liberation of air could not account for localized corro~ion."~ On consulting the many textbooks on corrosion, as that

Simulation as a mathematical technique is not new. However, recent increases in digital computer speeds and the ease of programming with languages such as Fortran have centered a good deal of attention around simulation in the last few years. By ignoring all but the relevant characteristics of a process, a mathematical simulator may be constructed which, when fed operating data, should react as the process would. The output becomes numbers, instead of tons, however. Thus, a trial-and-error operation of such a simulator will permit management to study a major system change at little cost.

One of the major difficulties in predicting the performance of oil reservoirs from their early pressure history lies in the uncertainty of estimating the volume of the liquid hydrocarbons contained in them. As a first step in filling this need, an equation was developed to determine the Inolal liquid volume of pure hydrocarbons over a wide range of temperature and pressure. This maximum deviation was that found when comparing the calculated and observed values over a temperature range of 86° to 482°F and a pressure range from the bubbl-point ro 10,000 psis. The equations expressing the correlation for. mixrurrc were developed from 647 experimental measure-rilents of volume on 47 bouom-hole samples covering ; temperature range of 72" to 250°F and a pressure znge from bubble-point ro 5,000 psig. The average absotute deviation was found to he 1.6 per cent with the maximum for any measurement of 4.9 per cent. INTRODUCTION Accuratc information of the pressure-volume-temper-iiture behavior of hydrocarbon liquids is of considerable importance in the field of both applied and theoretical science and, especially, in the solution of petroleum reservoir engineering problems. These PVT relationships can be expressed graphically, in tabular form or as equations of state. Equations of state for gases have been developed based on the ratio of pressure, temperature and volume to the pressure, temperature and volume at the critical points of the hydrocarbons. These equations have been successful in yielding values fairly accurate for reservoir engineering purposes. For liquids, however, relations of this type are more complex and have not yielded useful results. The composition of reservoir liquids is normally expressed in terms of the moles of hydrocarbons C,? C,. C,. elc, per mole of mixture. The composition must include the fraction of a mixture such as C,,, which cannot be separated with reasonable time and effort into specific hydrocarbons. Although there are several equations of state having variable degrees of accuracy applicable to pure liquid hydrocarbons, none includes a means for estimating the volume of mixtures as a function of temperature. pressure and composition expressed in this manner.

All gravity methods for the separation of ore from gangue, or of slate and other refuse from coal, are based upon differences in the falling velocities, in some fluid medium such as air or water, of the materials to be separated. As all materials falling in a vacuum have the same velocity, independent of the size, shape, weight or specific gravity of their individual particles, it would be more accurate to describe the operation of these methods as depending upon the retardation of falling velocities effected by the resistance of a fluid medium, this retardation being greater for small or light particles than for large or heavy particles. This generalization is true also of those appliances utilizing centrifugal force to replace or to supplement the action of gravity. The separation of materials of different specific gravities by means of a fluid having a specific gravity greater than that of the lighter particles and less than that of the heavier particles has not been applied commercially, or on a large scale, to the separation of ores or to the washing of coal, the method being limited to laboratory experimental work or to laboratory determinations for the purpose of checking up the work of jigs, classifiers, and other types of concentrating appliances. A solution of zinc chloride has thus come into general use in the laboratory to separate coal, bony coal, and slate, both to check up the work of coal-washing plants and for the purpose of making tests preliminary to the designing of coal-washing plants. The use of a heavy solution of some chemical in water has often been proposed for making such separations, especially in connection with the washing or preparation of coal. Practically insuperable difficulties, however, have prevented the commercial development of any such process, the difficulties being both physical and financial. The cost of the chemical used to make high-gravity solutions is usually prohibitive, and the freeing of the coal from all traces of the chemical is found to be practically impossible. Such solutions inevitably penetrate the individual lumps and particles of coal, transfusing into the pores and saturating the joint-planes, and very large quantities of wash water

NUMEROUS publications have examined hot hardness of metals and alloys. Some have studied creep in long-time hardness tests, few of which, however, were tested under a spherical indentor. 1-3 The results of Mulhearn and Tabor' indicate a parabolic-type creep for indium and lead, whereas Moore and Tabor2 how a logarithmic-type creep for indium. Similar semilog relationships between hardness and time have been found by Goffard and wheeler3 for magnesium, aluminum, and their alloys. In this note, the elevated-temperature hardness of some complex alloys, shown in Table I, was examined to discover whether any basic information about the deformation behavior of the alloys could be obtained. One of the alloys, H-13 alloy steel, was tested for short-time creep tests to examine the hardness-time relationship at various temperatures. A standard Brinell Hardness Tester, mounted with an appropriate furnace and 99 pct A12O3 poly-crystalline indentor, was employed for the purpose. The alloys were tested at temperatures from room to 1400°F for 30 sec under 1500-kg load. The creep studies were conducted for about 8500 sec at 7l°, 500°, 1000°, and 1200°F. For constants A and B, a relationship of the type H = Aexp(-BT) [ll was obtained for all alloys between hardness, H, and temperature, T. In the semilogarithmic plot, the data points for each alloy were arranged into two groups, each group on a straight line with a specific set of A and B values. These results are in agreement with many such observations on hot hardness, notably those of Westbrook for pure metals,4 The thermal softening coefficient, B, and transition temperature, Tt, for various alloys are shown in Table I. The change in slope around the transition temperature suggests an apparent change in the mechanism of deformation, probably from the shear (below Tt) to the diffusion type of mechanism. At the temperatures above Tt, for constants A' and B, a relationship of the type was obtained between H and T, Fig. 1. The nature of the equation, where R is gas constant, suggests the possibility of a thermally activated mechanism of deformation above Tt. The constant B' may hence be defined as the apparent activation energy of indentation. The B' values of various alloys are shown in Table I. A plot of B vs B' gives a curvilinear relation shown in Fig. 2. The indentation-creep data for H-13 alloy steel is shown in Fig. 3. At 71" and 500°F, the creep initially follows the logarithmic time law. However, the indentation size stabilizes after 7 sec at 71°F, and after 10 sec at 500°F. Further increase in loading time has no effect on indentation size. The creep of 1000° and 1200°F follows the logarithmic time law for the first 1000 sec, after which the

The leaching process of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is based upon the solubility of oxidized copper in sulfuric acid and the solubility of sulfide copper, largely in the form of chalcocite, in ferric sulfate solution. This necessitates the carrying of a rather large amount of iron in solution. The ferric sulfate is regenerated from ferrous sulfate by the oxygen given off at the anode during electrolytic precipitation of the copper. In September, 1924, excavation was started at Inspiration, Arizona, for the construction of a plant to treat 7500 tons of ore per day. When the plant was begun, the fact developed that by a minor change in the height of the overflow on the leaching tanks, 9000 tons could be charged into each tank and treated satisfactorily. This determined the maximum capacity of the plant as 9000 tons per day. The first ore was charged in October, 1926, and there are now available the records of five complete years of operation; namely, 1927 to 1931, inclusive. The original estimate of copper content of the ore to be mined for this plant was 1.19 per cent, of which 0.77 per cent was as oxide and 0.42 per cent as sulfide. From the metallurgical results obtained at the 35-ton pilot plant, it was estimated that a 90.0 per cent extraction of the oxide copper and a 75.0 per cent extraction of the sulfide copper could be made. It was estimated that the tailing would carry 0.182 per cent total copper, resulting in a

Organization In 1948, the Committee on Divisionalization and Publication Program of AIME, known as the Johnson Committee, recommended the reorganization of the Institute into three branches, Mining, Metals and Petroleum. This recommendation was accepted and the new organizational structure was implemented in Jan., 1949. The Mining Branch, at the time of the formation, had three divisions: the Coal Division formed in 1929, the Industrial Minerals Division (IndMD) dating from 1935, and the Minerals Beneficiation Division (MBD) formed in 1948 from the Milling Methods Committee, which had existed for many years. There did not exist, however, a division for the geologists and mining engineers. From the time of the founding of the Institute, this group was the main stem of AIME and never felt the need to segregate. The disciplines of mining and geology were served by a number of technical standing committees of AIME. With the birth of the new Branch, a new Division, the Mining, Geology and Geophysics Division (MGGD) was formed, completing the divisional structure of the Mining Branch and providing a home for all members. The governing body was the Mining Branch Council, with two members from each Division of the Mining Branch and one each from the Mineral Industry Education Division and the Mineral Economics Division. These last two divisions served all three Branches of AIME. The Division is such an important unit in the organization structure that it is of value to explain that it appoints committees to handle pro- grams, publications, and awards - representing the main functions of the Institute - as well as many others. There is enough flexibility in the organization so that each Division may have its own special committee structure as long as primary functions are provided. The past is indeed prologue to the future, for in 1957 the Johnson "Branches" gave way to the Fletcher "Societies." The Fletcher Committee, in 1958, recommended a new reorganization into Societies, each with the authority to administer its own finances and to designate certain officers and directors to the AIME Board. The date on which the Society of Mining Engineers was formed in Feb., 1957, has become known as "R" Day. A smooth transition from the loose Branch structure to Society organiza-
