Commercially hot-rolled low-carbon steel strip may have one of two basic types of orientation texture, depending upon the amount of a iron which was present during the finishing passes. The changes in these textures with varying amounts of cold reduction up to 95 pct have been determined for the sheet surface plane and for parallel planes down to the mid-plane. The development of cold reduction textures has been reassessed on the basis of (200), (222). and (110) stereographic pole figures and pole density or inverse pole figure values. In agreement with the literature, it is shown that the textures can be described in terms of partial fiber textures but alternative descriptions are given for one of the fiber textures, in order to more closely correlate with experimental data. One partial fiber texture consists of orientations of the type (hkk)[011] extending from (100)[011] to {322}(011) in agreement with the literature. At moderate amounts of cold reduction, a second partial fiber texture forms with a <331> fiber axis inclined 20 deg to the sheet normal and a range of orientations centered on one close to (1 11)[112] and reaching to (232)[101] or (322)[011]. An alternative description involves a (111) fiber axis parallel to the sheet normal but capable of rotation about the rolling direction with rotation about the fiber axis. ORIENTATIONS developed in low-carbon steel strip after cold reduction are of commercial importance because they control, in part, the final preferred orientations after subsequent annealing. The method of control however is not understood completely. Some preliminary work indicated that the cold-reduced orientations and the subsequent annealing textures of commercial low-carbon steel were dependent on the orientations present in the material before cold reduction, that is, those present in the hot-rolled strip but, to date, the effects of initial orientations have not been extensively investigated. For this reason, much of the information given in the literature on development of preferred orientation is difficult to assess as details of initial texture and processing conditions are often inadequate or are altered by a subsequent heat treatment such as normalizing.&apos; It is known2 that anomalous results for near surface orientations may be obtained if lubrication during cold rolling is not adequate but whether lubricant was used during the experiments has not always been given, nor has the exact depth below the surface at which determinations have been made. A comprehensive review of cold rolling textures has been made recently by Dillamore and Roberts&apos; and more restricted recent reviews are due to stickels4 and Abe.5 Based largely on the experimental work of Bennewitz,1 reviewers have accepted that the preferred orientations produced on cold reducing low-carbon steel can be described in terms of two partial fiber textures as follows: Partial Fiber Texture A which has a (011) direction in the rolling direction and includes orientations within the spread from (211)[011] through (100)[Oll] to (211)[011.]; there is some controversy as to whether it extends as far as the orientation (111)[011]. As Dillamore6 has observed, the extent of this partial fiber texture depends on the intensity levels selected. Partial Fiber -texture B which has a (011) direction located 60 den from the rolling direction in the plane containing the rolling direction and the sheet normal. There are two directions which satisfy these conditions and orientations in this partial fiber texture extend from (21l)[0ll] through (554)[225] to (121)[101]. The orientations {211}(011) are members of both partial fiber textures A and B and it can be noted that a variant of {554)<225> is within 6 deg of a variant of {111}(112). Barrett7 had postulated earlier that, in addition to orientations which would fall into partial fiber texture A, a true fiber texture with a (111) direction in the sheet normal was present after heavy cold reduction. This fiber texture would include orientations such as {111}(011) and {111}(112). Later investigators, notably Bennewitz,&apos; have discounted this, mostly on the ground that the partial fiber textures A and B, as described above, contain all the strong orientations that have been observed. However in other work it has been reported2 that (222) pole density or inverse pole figure values show a continuing increase with increasing reduction by cold rolling and give values considerably greater than for any other low indices plane. Thus it could be inferred that a (111) fiber texture as described by Barrett would be one which becomes more dominant with increasing cold reduction, whereas Bennewitz&apos; concluded that components such as {554)(225) in partial fiber texture B began to decrease in intensity at high reductions. Following Bennewitz, one would expect a decreasing (222) pole density value (parallel to the sheet normal) with increasing cold reduction. Because fiber textures consist of grains with a range of orientations that have one axis in common, it has been inferred that during deformation the crystal orientations rotate about the fiber axis&apos;74 and that the orientations of crystals that at one stage belong to one fiber texture can rotate on further cold reduction into the other fiber texture through an orientation in which the two fiber textures intersect.&apos; For example,

With on-stream electrical-resistance measurement as a basis, Bethlehem Steel developed a system for the completely automatic control of moisture in the feed to pelletizing. This system was later successfully adapted to the sintering process, with automatic control of moisture serving to maintain the air permeability required for effective burnthrough. Control of moisture content is an important factor in the agglomeration processes by which iron ores are converted into either pellets or sinter for use in blast furnace burdens. In both pelletizing and sintering the iron ore feed must be mixed with the proper amount of water so that capillary attraction and surface tension forces can be utilized to cause the ore particles to coalesce and form larger agglomerates. The success or failure of the entire pelletizing or sintering process depends on maintaining the proper moisture. Therefore, continuous automatic control of moisture is one of the conditions for the automation and optimum use of both pelletizing and sintering processes. In pelletizing, variation in moisture can cause ball size to change and is a common cause of cycling which results in a fluctuating feed to induration. Excessive moisture can cause lumps to form at the cutter bar and contributes to the formation of buildup on the green pellet screens. Green pellets with excess moisture deform and reduce bed permeability. In sintering, accurate control of moisture is also important because moisture must be within the limits that give the bed the required permeability for good burnthrough. In response to these problems, a moisture meter, based on the principle of electrical resistance measurement, was developed. This moisture meter has been a key factor in the development of systems for providing uniform feed of concentrates in most of Bethlehem&apos;s pelletizing and sintering plants. The automatic moisture control system for pelletizing was successfully plant-tested and resulted in the following: (1) Control of moisture in the green pellets to +0.2%. (2) Up to 50% reduction of bentonite consumption. (3) Control of unscreened green pellets so that 85% of the furnace product at Cornwall was within the size range of -5/8 +3/8 in. (4) Improved quality of product with a tumble test of 94 and a "Q" index of 90 as the result of feeding a consistently uniform feed to a shaft furnace. In sintering, where sinter-mix temperature change and variable feed could cause errors in moisture measurement, the system was designed to maintain the correct moisture under virtually all plant operating conditions. It was successfully plant-tested and is now in use in most of Bethlehem&apos;s sintering plants. The system achieves: (1) Control of moisture within the desired limits for optimum production. (2) Continuous measurement and control of moisture even with intermittent feeding of mix, so that attention by the operator is seldom required. The two automatic control systems provide smoother startup, minimize upsets and contribute to the consistent control of process variables in pelletizing and sintering. MOISTURE-CONTROL SYSTEM FOR PELLETIZING Fig. 1 shows the general arrangement of the system for automatic control of moisture in pelletizing.1 In this system a bin level controller, using a single probe which regulates filter speed, maintains a uniform low concentrate level in the bin.&apos; The moisture meter, comprised of an analyzer and control components, continuously measures the moisture in the bed and adds water to adjust to the desired level. The meter is placed in an open-loop (feed-forward) control, i.e., water addition occurs downstream from the probes. The converting of lead matte is not a general practice at lead smelters, therefore a description of the methods used and developments made during the past 20 years in converting both lead and copper matte at the Tooele plant of the International Smelting Co. in Utah may be of interest. The Tooele converting plant consists of five electrically operated stands in which are used 96 by 150-in. horizontal, barrel-type converters each of about 10 tons capacity. The main converter building is served by a 60-ton electric traveling crane and the casting shed by a 30-ton crane. Copper matte is tapped from near-by reverberatory furnaces into launders that deliver into 8-ton ladles on the converter floor. Lead matte is brought from the blast furnaces, about li mile away, in 5-ton ladles mounted on trucks, hauled by electric locomotives. As the Tooele copper plant has never been a producer of much copper, and has been Irregular in its operation, the original converting plant with its small converters has been adcquate, although decidedly out of step with large, modern plants. Tonnage figures in this paper are for comparison with each other only, as they are not at all in line with prevailing tonnages at larger plants today. The reasons for the changes made in converting practice at Tooele, as well as the improvements in the results obtained as these changes were perfected, are given in the following pages. Lead-matte Converting, 1914 to 1927 In 1914, Oscar M. Kuchs wrote a paper for the Transactions,&apos; describing in detail the lead-matte converting methods at Tooele up to that time. The method perfected only a few months before Mr. Kuchs&apos; paper was written consisted, briefly, of blowing the lead matte alone, without the addition of siliceous fluxing ores, to a point where the lead and zinc were largely eliminated by volatilization. THE most important non-metallic mineral industries from a tonnage standpoint are those that are allied with the construction industries and are engaged in handling sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, cement, lime and gypsum. The greatest problem facing a number of these industries at this time is over-production. They have experienced un- usual, and in some instances phenomenal, growth during recent years, stinlulated by extensive highway and building construction, but in some localities expansion of producing plants has far outstripped industrial needs. The cement industry is operating at about two- thirds capacity. Over-production tends toward price- cutting and unprofitable and interrupted operation, involving maintenance expenses for idle plants and disorganization of working forces. This condition has encouraged active efforts toward reducing production costs by the introduction of labor-saving equipment. Also, there is a tendency toward the location of manufacturing plants, wherever possible, near the centers of consumption rather than at points of production of raw materials. In order to reduce overhead expense, or for other reasons, many consolidations of companies into larger units have taken place. An economic study of conditions in these industries is highly desirable. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has taken one step forward in this direction in the issuance of Economic Paper 7, entitled "Economics of New Sand and Gravel Developments." Briefly, this report emphasizes the importance of making a thorough study of all the economic factors involved before undertaking new .enterprises.

When it became apparent early in 1941 that the United States might be drawn into the war, studies were made of the bauxite situation in Arkansas, principally because 9.5 pct of the known bauxite reserves of the country were located in that State. Bauxite mining was then geared for maximum production to supply ore to meet this country&apos;s war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the needs of Canada as well. In view of the comparatively small bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive exploratory drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. An alumina plant was erected near Bauxite and an aluminum plant near Hot Springs, Ark., by the Defence Plant Corp. The Metals Reserve Co. established a schedule of prices, arranged for stockpile sites and a buying agency. Operators cooperated to step up production and new ones came into the field. Production Record Prior to 1941, the greatest annual production in Arkansas was 562,892 long tons, dry basis in 1918. During the single month of August 1943, 693,596 long tons were mined—130,704 tons more than for the entire year of 1918. In general the Arkansas bauxite deposits are relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, compared to coal, iron or open-pit copper deposits, are ill-adapted to an expansion in output. Commercial deposits range in horizontal extent from less than an acre to about 40 acres and are usually very irregular in outline. The average thickness of all known workable deposits is between 12 and 15 ft. with a maximum of about 60 ft. The ore bodies are usually somewhat undulating and nearly horizontal although locally some deposits dip as much as IS°. Types of Bauxite Three physical types of bauxite may be recognized: pisolitic, granitic and amorphous. Pisolitic ore is the most common type. It consists of small pebble-like nodules, ranging from the size of a pin head up to several inches in diameter, all set in a fine grained matrix. Transported bauxite is usually- pisolitic. Most residual bauxite is granitic. It is believed not to have moved appreciably from the location where it originally was formed. This is indicated by the fact that it appears to grade into unaltered nephelite syenite, which it overlies. Amorphous ore is the least abundant. It is nonpisolitic and resembles clay, has no characteristic texture, and can be identified definitely only by chemical analysis. This paper describes the application of x-ray theory to design procedures in connection with fluid saturation determinations during fluid flow experiments with porous media. A reliable and rapid method for calibrating the x-ray apparatuy is described. Extension of the method to fluid saturation determinations in three-fluid systems is described. INTRODUCTION In rerearch on oil production problems a method is required which will give quickly the quantity of each component of a fluid flow system present at any cross-section of a porous medium. The sample of porous medium under investigation is usually referred to as a core. The ratio of the volume of one component to the total fluid volume is defined as the saturation of the porous medium by that component. This ratio is generally given as per cent saturation. Some means of measuring saturation which have received consideration include: electrical conductivity of the fluids;1,2 emissions from radioactive tracers dissolved in the fluids; the radioactivity of silver caused by reflection of neutrons from hydrogen atoms in the fluids;&apos; the attenuation of a microwave beam. the diminution and phase shift of ultrasonic wave trains.4,5 and the reduction in intensity of x-ray beams in passing through the fluids. X-rays have already been used with some success. Since every material has a different power to absorb x-rays, the reduction in intensity of an x-ray beam as it passes through a core depends on the fluids present. The strength of the emergent beam can be found by converting its energy into a measurable form such as heat or ionic current. or by its effect on a photographic plate or fluorescent screen. The beam strengths could be interpreted as quantities of known fluids in the core if, previously, these beam strengths had been identified with a known combination of the same fluids. With some fluid cornbinations it might be desirable to dissolve powerful x-ray absorbing materials in one or more of the fluids, to increase the differences in the beam strengths for various fluid saturations. Boyer, Morgan and Muskat6 have described a method of measuring two component fluid saturation. One component was air or water; the other. minerat seal oil in which was dissolved 25 per cent by weight of iodobenzene to increase its absorbing power. The x-ray source was a tungsten target tube operated at 43 kv potential. The beam emerging from the core was measured as ionic current flowing across an air-filled ionization chamber by means of an amplifying circuit and galvanometer. Another portion of the beam from the x-ray tube was passed through a metal plate and measured in another ionization chamber. This portion, called the monitor beam, was used as an indication of the performance of the x-ray tube. The galvanometer readings were calibrated against air-oil core saturations, gravimetrically determined. The method was apparently established by experimental means. In the present investigation the available theory of x-radia-tion was surveyed with a view to extending the usefulness of the method and to developing design procedures for its application to measurement of fluid saturation in porous media. Application of the theory permits prediction of relative meter readings to be expected for any combination of porous matrix, various saturating fluids and auxiliary filtering media. It is thus possible to calibrate the equipment in terms of fluid saturation by an indirect but rapid technique. The results of calculations based on x-ray theory indicate. and results of the saturation calibration technique confirm. that a valid measurement of the saturation of the core can be made for any two components and in some cases for three components. THEORY The strength of an x-ray beam, after it has passed through a distance. 1, of matter of density, p, and mass absorption coefficient, µ at a given wavelength, A, may be expressed by the absorption formula I = I0 e ...........(1) where I, represents the intensity of the incident x-ray beam and I is the intensity of the emergent beam. The expression e is called the transmission factor of the material. The variation of I,, with wavelength depends upon the materials through which the x-ray beam has previously passed and upon the spectral distribution of energy at the source of the x-radiation. A group of curves. called spectra. which show the variation of intensity with wavelength and x-ray tube voltage are given in Fig. 1. These curves represent the general radiation from a tungsten target tube. When the tube voltage is greater than 69.3 kv, the characteristic radiation of the tungsten is emitted and is superposed on the general radiation. At a given voltage the minimum wavelength A,,,,, at which energy can be emitted by an x-ray tube is given by the formula 12,340 xml. = ——..........(2) volts where A,.,,.. is in Angstrom units. The wavelength at which the spectra have maximum intensity a1so decreases with increasing x-ray tube voltaue. The area under each curve represents to an arbitrarv scale the total energy emerging from the x-ray tube for that voltage. The variation of µ with wavelength has been determined for many substances and may be found in such references as those by Compton and Allison7 and by Hodgman.8 The phenomenon of absorption is composed chiefly of the capture of photons by the atoms of the absorbing material with associated displacement of electrons, and of the scattering, or the deflection, of the photons by the atoms. Curves of these mass absorption coefficients show jump discontinuities. or absorption edges. at wavelengths which are short enough for the photons,

After considerable intercommittee correspondence a letter was received from. E. DeGolyer under date of Jan. 25, 1935, in which he discussed the possibility of modifying rather than discarding the Rule of Capture. He summarized his proposal as follows:

Phase equilibria data were used to develop an equation-of-state correlation for complex hydrocarbon mixtures, thereby circumventing difficulties associated with use of pressure-volume-temperature data. Equilibrium phase data for two condensate reservoir fluids were used to determine equation-of-state parameters for hydrocarbons as heavy as C22H46 in a modified form of the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state. Comparative tests of K-values from the resultant correlation were made with data for condensate reservoir, separator and gas plant absorber mixtures. Generally, for temperatures above OF and computed liquid densities below 0.55 Ib-mole/cu ft, the modified BIVR equation predicted K-values in close agreement with the experimental data. INTRODUCTION Accurate predictions of thermodynamic behavior for complex hydrocarbon mixtures are necessary for many calculations in the petroleum industry. Because of the relatively high cost of extensive experimental data, many correlations for prediction of phase behavior have been developed. Some of these, such as the correlation of K-values presented in the NGAA Equilibrium Ratio Data Book, are totally empirical.l Others, such as the Benedict-Webb-Rubin (BWR) equation-of-state method, are semitheoretical.2-4 Unfortunately, published correlation methods often do not accurately predict the phase behavior of complex hydrocarbon mixtures, principally because of inadequate representation of the effects of components heavier than decane. This paper presents a new approach to this problem in which basic equation-of-state relations including heavy hydrocarbon effects are applied. Equilibrium phase data for two condensate reservoir fluids containing hydrocarbons as heavy as C22H46 are used to correlate component K-values. The BWR equation was chosen as the prototype equation of state for this study because of its proven capability for accurately predicting phase behavior and thermodynamic properties of light - hydrocarbon mixtures? Research was directed toward development of BWR parameters for the heavy hydrocarbons and modifications of the mathematical form of the BWR equation for application to complex hydrocarbon mixtures. The new equation-of-state approach presented differs considerably from previous methods in that phase equilibria rather than PVT data are used for determination of equation-of-state parameters. It is an explicit approach since the parameters are determined directly from mixture data. As such, it does not encounter problems inherent in the implicit method used by Benedict, Webb and Rubin 2-4 and numerous other investigators—one in which mixture parameters were postulated to be functions of the pure component parameters. The pure component BWR parameters, in turn, were determined from experimental PVT data. This method has been limited to mixtures containing components lighter than decane because of lack of vapor phase PVT data. Studies have been reported in which BWR parameters have been determined explicitly from PVT data for binary mixtures.6-8 However, since small concentrations of heavier components have only a minor effect on PVT behavior, it is doubtful that these explicit methods would yield useful results for condensate systems. Ellington and Eakin9 have shown that the accuracy of K-values predicted by an equation of state developed from mixture PVT data probably would be more than an order of magnitude lower than the accuracy of the PVT data. On the other hand, an equation of state utilizing parameters developed from phase equilibria data should predict K-values with accuracy comparable to the accuracy of the experimental phase compositions. This work applies this explicit approach with the objective of improving hydrocarbon mixture phase behavior predictions. THE Federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of Federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal indus-tries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Be-cause of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. IN the coal review for the United States for 1875, the Engineering and Mining Journal, January 1st, 1876, remarks about the Richmond coal basin " It has contributed but little to the supply of fuel during the year past, notwithstanding the fact that it is the most favorably situated of all our coal-fields, and possesses a fuel of good quality, well adapted to many important uses. An unaccountable lethargy seems to have fallen on all who have touched this field ; and yet, in the future it can scarcely fail to become one of the great sources of coal supply." In most respects indorsing the above remarks, I take occasion to lay before the Institute the following facts in defence of the Rich¬mond basin; and not willing to criticize other mining enterprises in this field, I will make this one remark in general for all of them. While it is true that very little coal has been raised during the year in this field, it is equally true that even the little that has been raised could hardly be sold. When the output of the largest coal districts in the United States decreases, in consequence of the state of the market, it is not to be wondered at that the former small output of this basin dwindled down to almost nothing. But a far deeper¬seated evil, under which this field is suffering, may be discerned from the following remarks, which I hope will show that the latter part of the above remark in the Journal is not altogether fair. As the history of one mine in this district very nearly represents the history of the whole field, I will endeavor to give an account of the development of the Midlothian Mines, ranging amongst the old¬est in the district, partially taken from a report of Col. GruZLESKI and winegard1 have recently reported on the origin and development of the cellular substructure in Sn-Cd eutectic unidirectionally grown with different amounts of constitutional supercooling (CS). This communication deals with the results obtained in a parallel study on the instability of a plane interface in Al-Cu eutectic unidirectionally grown. Similarities as well as differences with the results of these authors1 will be presented. A1-Cu eutectic alloy ingots of 99.999 pct purity were grown unidirectionally under different G/R ratios where G = thermal gradient in the liquid, R = solidification rate. The ingots were cut in slices perpendicular to the solidification axes and the substructure studied on parallel sections following the sense of growth. It was generally found that the last part of the ingot to solidify presented a well developed colony substructure as a result of impurity build up and constitutional supercooling. The results obtained were: 1) When the structure was observed with low niagnification (of the order of 150 to 300 times) the first instabilities were observed at the grain boundaries and node-like structures formed at the junctions of the growth-induced boundaries, as reported by Gruz-leski and Winegard.1 Inside the grains the first signs of instability appear later and correspond to the type shown in Fig. 1; this is a two dimensional cell substructure. &apos; 2) Figs. 2 and 3 correspond to the evolution from a two dimensional substructure to a cellular type. In the A1-Cu eutectic the boundaries of the two dimensional cell are always perpendicular to the laniellaes instead of parallel as in the Sn-Cd eutectic. 1

ONE of the fundamental reasons for the extreme rapidity with which the Porphyries developed after the trail had been blazed at Bingham was the amenability of the deposits to prospecting and proving of the ore either by churn-drilling or by diamond-drilling. At Ray churn-drill data formed the principal basis for early calculations of ore reserves; and in 1913, Inspiration floated its first bond issue for $6,000,000 on the strength of the estimate of 45,000,000 tons of sulphide ore assaying just over 3 per cent copper. The money was obtained in spite of the fact that no one ever had actually laid eyes on more than a minute fraction of that ore. The customary method of developing a copper deposit before the Porphyry era had been to sink shafts or drive adits and then to follow and expose the veins or lodes with horizontal and vertical underground workings-drifts, crosscuts, raises, and winzes. The excavated material sometimes was sampled in bulk; but always the walls of the openings would be channeled at intervals to obtain small samples representative of the ore left in place. This process was known as "blocking out" ore. It was costly and it required a great deal of time to prove the existence of immense tonnages. The early development at Utah was done in this way; likewise, at Miami. This fact helps to explain why only 3,000,000 tons of ore was reported as being developed when J. Parke Channing wrote the report on which the original Miami financing was based in March, 1908. Fortunately, his 3,000,000 tons averaged 3&apos;per cent copper. At Ray, Seeley W. Mudd estimated 3,000,000 tons of ore in June, 1908, developed principally by underground working; but by the end of 1909, Henry Krumb was able to report 50,000,000 tons as the fruit of a little more than a year of churn-drilling.

Structures obtained on freezing of several hypo-and hypereutectic Al-Cu alloys over a range of solidification rates have been examined. Dendrite spacing, L, increases linearly with solute concentration and with the square root of the inverse freezing rate. The relationship for hypoeutectic alloys is: where rate of change of fraction solid with time, is freezing rate, C is solute concentration, (pct Cu)=1. Mass transport in inter dendritic liquid during solidification is analyzed; the experimental observations suggest maximum concentration differences and constitutional supercooling in the inter dendritic liquid increase with an increase in the solute concentration. The dendrite morphology changes with freezing rate and alloy composition. The dendrites of the a phase are parallel, uniformly spaced plates with slow freezing and rods with rapid freezing. Nonor-thogonal side branching has been observed in phases with cubic and tetragonal structures. Side branches in a dendrites are orthogonal with slow freezing and at 60 deg with rapid freezing. Formation of second-phase envelopes around the Primary phase is also discussed. DENDRITIC structure is characteristic of many types of phase transformation. The most extensively studied so far has been solidification of liquid solutions. chalmersl and coworkers have interpreted the formation of dendrites in terms of the breakdown of a planar interface. Most of the work done concerns itself with the development of an instability at the interface. Little theoretical work has been done quantitatively to relate the parameters of dendritic structure to mass transport in the liquid phase. A few empirical relations based on the experimental2&apos;3 observations exist in the literature. Several workers2 including Brown and Adams1 have studied dendrite spacing in A1-Cu system as a function of solidification variables. In most cases, dendrite spacing has been found to increase linearly with the square root of some parameter proportional to the freezing time. The effect of solute concentration is not clear; some workers report the dendrite spacing increases with solute concentration4 whereas others report vice versa.&apos;&apos;&apos; ~ohatgi&apos; has observed an increase in the spacing between ice dendrites with an increase in solute concentration in water. Tiller has also suggested that dendrite spacing should increase with solute concentration. In the present work dendrite spacing and morphology have been examined as a function of solute concentration and freezing rate. The freezing rate is defined as the fraction of liquid solidified per unit time, dfs/dß?, where f, is the fraction solid and 8 the time. The fastest freezing rate studied was 4550 times the slowest freezing rate. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS It is of interest to analyze the concentration distribution in the liquid phase between growing dendrites during solidification, Fig. 1. Since this distribution is a direct consequence of the rejection of solute by the growing solid, a diffusional process, the concentration gradients increase with the freezing rate. However, when solidification rate is the only variable in a series of experiments, the interdendritic liquid regions become smaller (i.e., the dendrites become more closely spaced) with an increase in freezing rate. The main purpose of the analytical treatment of interdendritic liquid diffusion will be to reveal a tendency for dendrite spacing to decrease with increasing solidification rate in just such a way that the maximum concentration differences developed in the liquid phase are remarkably independent of freezing rate. Two rather different analyses are set forth, one pertaining to the one-dimensional diffusion which obtains in the interdendritic liquid between parallel plate-shaped dendrites, and the other to the cylindrically symmetrical diffusion around rod-shaped dendrites during early stages of solidification. The results of the two analyses are quantitatively similar, correlating dendrite spacing, maximum concentration difference, and freezing rate. First consider the simpler one-dimensional case. Two parallel plate-shaped dendrites are separated by a distance, L, between centers, Fig. 1. Solidification takes place by the thickening of these plates, with solute being rejected into the liquid. It is assumed there is no diffusion in the solid. This thickening process is slow enough and the dendrite spacing small enough that the concentration differences which develop, although interesting and important, are very small (an important assumption which is verified ex-

DURING the year just closed the bituminous industry has been marked by a continuation of the period of low prices and a steady deflation, accompanied by the closing of mines and the consolidation of small units into larger ones. This pro- gram has marked almost every field in the country, and it bids fair to continue for some time. Some figures recently published for Kentucky show that in 1924 there were 660 mines producing 45,147,000 tons; in 1928 the number had decreased to 537, while production had increased to 61,860,000 tons, and a similar movement is occurring all over the country. Prices throughout the early part of the year were very low, but during the fall and winter the prices received are more satisfactory than they were earlier in the year. One of the leading developments in the marketing of coal during the year was the trade practice movement, which began in the Harlan field, and has now been adopted in the Harlan, Hazard, Appalachian, Logan. Williamson and Kanawha fields. The purpose of this movement is to prevent the shipment of coal except on order, and by the publication of price lists to prevent much senseless price quotation. Where it has been practised the longest this movement has resulted in a considerable degree of stabilization, and, undoubtedly, it will help existing conditions very materially if it becomes universal.

THE increasing use of internal furnace-boilers for mining power-plants (doubtless due to the facility with which they may be installed by reason of their portability; the fact that they require no masonry setting, cast-iron fronts, buck-stays, etc., and practically no foundation; and the successful maintenance of their claim to equal and even superior economy, as compared with boilers of other types) warrants this description of a method of remedying an injury which may occur, to such a furnace, even though it satisfies the requirements of the formula adopted by the U. S. Board of Supervising Inspectors of Steam Vessels.2 I refer to the sagging and deformation which may result from overloading the boilers for a considerable period-say, several days. This is sometimes unavoidable under the exacting conditions of continuous day-and-night service, and (in spite of all rules and precautions, the occasional careless or unskillful work of attendants. Such a trouble is by no means unknown on shipboard, where this type of boiler is so largely employed. In the case here described, two Morrison suspension-furnaces, of half-inch steel, 14 ft. long and 45 in. in mean diameter, with ? dry-back ? boilers, were necessarily operated somewhat beyond their rated -normal capacity for several months, while a third similar unit was -in process of installation, and during this period, though the boilers were kept perfectly clean, heat seems &apos;to have been generated slightly faster than it was absorbed by, the water in the boilers.
