TWO metallurgical tools have acquired wide use within the past several years as a means of studying the transformation characteristics of steel. One is a technique used first by Bain and Davenport for determining the transformation characteristics of a steel at constant temperature; the second is the end-quench hardenability test. Constant-temperature transformation curves like those of Bain and Davenport have done much to rationalize the metallography of steel; however, in commercial practices, constant-temperature transformation is seldom encountered, therefore only rarely can such curves be directly applied. The real reason for the determination of such curves lies in the fact that they provide a way of thinking about transformation that is both convenient and productive. The end-quench hardenability test is a more practical means of studying transformation, for, by correlating positions on the hardenability bar with shapes of different masses, an almost direct application of the results can be made. Unfortunately, the end-quench test, though practical, can do very little toward improving the metallurgists' way of thinking about transformation. These two metallurgical tools, dealing with precisely the same phenomenon, should be very closely associated in metallurgists' minds. Actually, they are frequently pushed into separate mental corners and considered as being more or less distinct and unrelated. The reason for this is that no strong connecting link between them has been developed. An attempt is sometimes made to relate these two tools by projecting the critical cooling rate on the isothermal transformation plot as illustrated in Fig. I. The critical cooling rate is considered as a constant rate-though in practical applications, cooling rates are never constant—and this constant cooling rate is given uniform significance from the Ae temperature down to the temperature of initial transformation. A little thought indicates the errors of such a procedure. Certainly the time interval spent just below point A of Fig. I cannot be as effective in promoting nucleation as is the time interval spent just above point B. Yet the procedure represented in Fig. I considers all the time spent between temperatures A and B to be just as effective in promoting nucleation as though all the time were spent at temperature B. Furthermore, change the shape of the isothermal curve between points B and C in any way desired, and the required critical cooling rate is not changed one iota. This cannot possibly be true. Such a way of thinking about critical cooling rates not only is incapable of giving any results that are quantitatively satisfactory but is likely to give very misleading qualitative results.

Activity in geological exploration and drilling continued in Canada in 1945 at about the same rate as in the previous year, but with disappointing results as far as new production is .concerned. Both in the foothills and on the Plains of Alberta, however, there are wildcat wells that have either given encouraging shows or some production, which are very important in relation to future developments. The normal decline of Turner Valley, the largest producing field in Canada, has continued, and this decrease has not been offset by new discoveries. In addition, the closing of the Canol pipe line on March 31, 1945, isolated the Norman Wells field in the Mackenzie River valley, and the outlet at present. is confined to supplying the relatively small local requirements. MOST investigators are aware of the present unsatisfactory state of information concerning the fundamentals of crushing and grinding. Considerable scattered empirical data exist, which are useful for predicting machine performance and give, acceptable accuracy when the installations and materials compared are quite similar. However, there is no widely accepted unifying principle or theory that can explain satisfactorily the actual energy input necessary in commercial installations, or can greatly extend the range of empirical comparisons. Two mutually contradictory theories have long existed' in the literature, the Rittinger and Kick. They were derived from different viewpoints and logically lead to different results. The Rittinger theory is the older and more widely accepted. In its first form, as stated by P. R. Rittinger, it postulates that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the new surface area produced and hence inversely proportional to the product diameter. In its second form it has been amplified and enlarged to include .the concept of surface energy; in this form it was precisely stated by A. M. Gaudin2 as follows: "The efficiency of a comminution operation is the ratio of the surface energy produced to the kinetic energy expended. According to the theory in its second form, measurements of the surface areas of the feed and product and determinations of the surface energy per unit of new surface area produced give the useful work accomplished. Computations using the best values of surface energy obtainable indicate that perhaps, 99 pct of the work input in crushing and grinding is wasted. However, no method of comminution has yet been devised which results in a reasonably high mechanical efficiency under this definition. Laboratory tests have been reported' that support the theory in its first form by indicating that the new surface produced in. different grinds is proportional to the work input. However, most of these tests employ an unnatural feed consisting either of screened particles of one sieve size or a scalped feed which has had the fines removed. In these cases the proportion of work" done on. the finer product particles is greatly increased and distorted beyond that to be expected with a normal feed containing the natural fines. Tests on pure crystallized quartz are likely to be misleading since it does not follow the regular breakage pattern of most materials but is relatively harder to grind at the finer sizes, as will be shown later. This theory appears to be indefensible mathematically, since work is the product of force multiplied by distance, and the distance factor (particle deformation before breakage) is ignored. The Kick theory' is based primarily upon the stress-strain diagram of cubes under compression, or the deformation factor. It states that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. Where F represents the diameter of the feed particles and P is the diameter of the product particles, the reduction ratio Rr is F/P, and according to Kick the work input required for reduction to different sizes is proportional to log Rr/log 2.5 The Kick theory is mathematically more tenable than the Rittinger when cubes under compression are considered, but it obviously fails to assign a sufficient proportion of the total work in. reduction to the production of fine particles. According to the Rittinger theory as demonstrated by the theoretical breakage of cubes the new surface produced, and consequently the useful work input, is proportional to Rr-1.5 If a given reduction takes place in two or more stages, the overall reduction ratio is the product of the Rr values for each stage, and the sum of the work accomplished in all stages is proportional to the sum of each Rr-1 value multiplied by the relative surface area before each reduction stage. It appears that neither the Rittinger theory, which is concerned only with surface, nor the Kick theory, which is concerned only with volume, can be completely correct. Crushing and grinding are concerned both with surface and volume; the absorption of evenly applied stresses is proportional to the volume concerned, but breakage starts with a crack tip, usually on the surface, and the concentration of stresses on the surface motivates the formation of the crack tips. The evaluation of grinding results in terms of surface tons per kw-hr, based upon screen analysis, involves an assumption of the surface area of the subsieve product, which may cause important errors. The'evaluation in terms of kw-hr per net ton of 200 mesh produced often leads to erroneous results when grinds of appreciably different fineness are compared, since the amount of -200 mesh material produced varies with the size distribution characteristics of the feed. This paper is concerned primarily with the development, proof, and application of a new Third Theory, which should eliminate the objections to the two old theories and serve as a practical unifying principle for comminution in all size ranges. Both of the old theories have been remarkably barren of practical results when applied to actual crushing and grinding installations. The need for a new satisfactory theory is more acute than those not directly concerned, with crushing and grinding calculations can realize. THE angles between the crystallographic planes in cubic crystals have been given by Bozorth,¹ in magnesium, zinc, and cadmium by Salkovitz,² and in tin by Nicholas. The determination of the orientation of single crystals and the study of plastic deformation require the knowledge of these angles and are often facilitated by use of a standard projection. Tables of these angles and standard projections have not been published for titanium or zirconium which have c/a ratios considerably less than those hexagonal metals for which this data is available. Accordingly, Table I has been prepared giving these angles. Fig. 1 presents a standard (0001) projection of titanium. Mettrllographic and X-ray diffraction study of Cb-Co alloys in the Composition range of 7 to 33 nt. pct Cb, after annealing at 1175 °', showed that near 25 al. pct Cb on MgNi,-lype hexagonal Laves Phaseexists in a narrow composition range, and that an MgCl- type cubic Laves Phase occurs between approximately 27 and 32.6 ut. pd Cb. Lattice parameter and density measures indicated that, in both phases. the deviations from proper Loves sloichimetry result from the substitution of cobalt atoms for some 0f the columbium atoms. Tlle same phases occurant 1000'C, together with an additional phase of unknown structure, which appears between the hexagonal Laves phase and the cobalt-bose terminal solid solutions KOSTER and Schmid' identified a phase corresponding to the composition VCo,, and more recently the crystal structure of this phase has been determined.' In the Ta-Co system Korchynsky and Fountain recently found two intermediate phases at the composition Taco,, one of them metastable. In contrast to the V-Co and the Ta-Co systems, in the Cb-Co system no intermediate phase has been found4 at the composition CbCo,. The present investigation was undertaken in order to reexamine the question of the existence of such a phase. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Twelve alloys were prepared by arc-melting in a water-cooled copper crucible under helium atmosphere. Electrolytic cobalt and 99.9 pct pure colum-bium powder have been used as starting materials. It was found that melting losses can be reduced by compressing the colunlbium powder in the form of thin pellets before melting. For the alloys used the melting losses were not higher than 1 pct. The intended compositions of all alloys and the chemical analyses of three of them are given in Table I. Specimens from all alloys were annealed in evac- uated fused silica tubes at 1175°C for 3 days and quenched in cold water. A second set of specimens of most alloys was annealed at 1000°C for 7 days and then quenched in cold water. The annealed and quenched specimens were examined metallographically, using the following etchant: 60 pct glycerine +20 pct H,NO, + 10 pct HF + 10 pct water. Powder specimens for X-ray diffraction were prepared by crushing annealed solid specimens in a mortar. Alloys containing 27.3, 28, 29.7, and 32.6 at. pct Cb annealed at either 1175" or 1000°C were very brittle and it was found unnecessary to reanneal the powders. However, alloys containing 24.8 at. pct Cb, or less, especially those annealed at 1000°C, were much less brittle and re-annealing was required to remove the strains present in the crushed powders. In each case reannealing was done at the same temperature at which the corresponding solid specimens were annealed and it, too, was followed by quenching in cold water. In many instances X-ray diffraction patterns were also taken of the polished and etched solid specimens and compared with the corresponding X-ray diffraction patterns obtained with powders. The X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with an asymmetrical focusing camera, using CrK radiation. For precision lattice parameter measurements some X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with a symmetrical focusing camera, again using CrK radiation. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A microscopic examination of the alloys annealed at 1175°C revealed that the alloy containing 25.5 at. pct Cb was composed of a single phase, but that the 24.8 at. pct Cb alloy did contain a small amount of a second phase, identified by means of X-ray diffraction as having a fcc structure, undoubtedly the terminal solid solution based on cobalt. Apart from the few very weak lines corresponding to this minor phase, the X-ray diffraction patterns of these alloys could be well interpreted in terms of a MgNi,-type hexagonal Laves phase structure. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. By independent control of temperature and water vapor pressure, it is shown that charge depends primarily upon relative humidity, not on temperature or water pressure alone. All the effects of temperature changes other than modification of humidity are apparently small. However, humidity control can be achieved through manipulation of the more tractable variable, temperature. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. Some of their effects have been described in general by Fraas1,2 and by Ralston.3 The influence of temperature and humidity may be considered a problem in industrial separations because humidity, especially, is not normally controlled, hence leads to unpredicted quality control problems. The problem is significant whether the separation is based on conductivity differences or on contact electrification. There is no doubt that water adsorbs from humid atmospheres onto mineral surfaces resulting in conductivity changes.'-8 An empirical relationship between conductivity and humidity is1.4-6,8 where a and b are constants peculiar to the substrate, and s and h are the conductivity and relative humidity respectively. Some authors have taken advantage of differences in a and b among minerals to make or propose electrodynamic separations in which h is the key control variable. Fraasl,2 reported that the charge developed on quartz and feldspar through contact with aluminum is sensitive to humidity, as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The microseismic method of detecting instability and high-stress zones in underground mines was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the early 1940's.l,2 For about 25 years this method has been used throughout the world by mining and construction companies in assessing the stability of underground and surface excavations. Rock noises are the release of small amounts of stored strain energy propagating outward from their source as a seismic wave that can be detected with special geophysical equipment. This release of strain energy is caused by a rock mass undergoing load changes resulting in small-scale displacement adjustments such as microcracking, shearing, sliding, and crushing of crystal grains, some even as small as the elastic displacements themselves. No detailed field studies of any of these mechanisms have been made, and knowledge about the origin of rock noises is relatively incomplete. Laboratory tests have shown that when rocks are stressed in a testing machine, the rock noise rate-the number of rock noises generated per unit of time increases with increasing applied stress.3 This increase is most pronounced as the ultimate strength of the rock is approached. The standard field procedure has been to monitor a rock structure at intervals and plot rock noise rates vs. time, thus gaining a semiquantitative estimate of the behavior and stability of the structure. The success of such monitoring, however, has depended almost entirely on the experience and knowledge of the operator, his interpretation of the data, and his equipment. Very little study has been devoted to the basic properties of the vibration record of a rock noise. The Microscope-Stand.—The microscope-stand proper, Fig. 1, consists of a microscope-tube, provided with both coarse and fine adjustments of the best construction, and with a draw-tube, rigidly mounted on a bar supported at both ends on substantial and firm cast-iron legs. The height between the table and the under side of the supporting bar is 5 in. and the distance between the supporting legs 12 inches. Griffith in an investigation of the Scranton mine cave problem several years ago; in the course of which we investigated rather carefully the bearing strength of various materials that might be utilized for, the support of over We found that there were no reliable data as to the resisting strength, for instance, of gob pillars or timber cogs or cribs, nor as to the amount of compression that might be expected under a given burden. We made a series of tests at the Fritz engineering laboratory of Lehigh University, from which we, reduced certain conclusions, subject, however, to further test before they could be definitely recommended. Onr study of the subject was later checked by a commission appointed by the Governor of the State of Pennsylvania, to investigate the same subject the subsidence of the surface, and the danger entailed thereby. The State, commission made a series of tests on a much more ambitious scale at Pittsburgh, in the laboratory of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and their tests agreed quite closely with those that Mr. Griffith and I had made. The important question of the metallurgical value of the coals of the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Coast is to be settled, of course, by practical experiment. Meanwhile, as I have had occasion to point out, the proximate analyses of these coals throws little light upon it, and is, indeed, likely to mislead the metallurgist, if he compares it with the results of similar analyses upon bituminous and semi-bituminous coals. With the view of showing how large a proportion of the material usually classed as(" volatile matters " consists of combined water, or oxygen and hydrogen presumably in chemical combination, I have collected a number of ultimate analyses from various sources, in the following tables. FOUR general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part of the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremyl and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed the presence of large quantities of organic sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Measurement of zeta potentials is a useful tool to study the surface chemistry of minerals under flotation conditions. Because there is continued interest in this approach, the apparatus for obtaining zeta potentials of nonconducting solids by the streaming potential method is outlined here. Fig. 1 illustrates the streaming potential apparatus. The streaming potential cell or plug consists of two 24/40 standard ground joints (4) joined with a piece of pyrex tubing 60 mm long and 12 mm in diam (5). The electrodes are made of bright platinum disks 19 mm in diam and 1 mm thick through which 0.5-mm holes have been drilled (6). To the surface of each is welded a piece of 80-mesh platinum gauze. Each electrode is permanently mounted on the ends of the inner parts of the two standard joints by means of a platinum wire (7) which connects it to the tungsten seal at the end of the cell (8). For ease in cleaning and handling the apparatus, the streaming cell is fastened to the 500-ml reservoir flasks (1) by means of two 18/9 ball and socket joints (2). This particular arrangement permits passage of the solution in either direction through the plug of particles. Flow of solution can be stopped by a stopcock (3). One of the reservoir flasks has a large opening to permit insertion of either a thermometer or a pair of electrodes for measuring pH of solutions within the system. In making the experiments, the plug is filled with 48 to 65-mesh particles, but a layer of 28 to 35-mesh particles is placed at each electrode to prevent any of the finer particles from passing through holes in the electrodes.

In a previous article1 preliminary experiments were described, indicating the possibilities of a quantitative spectroscopic method for the determination of small amounts of lead in copper, which would be accurate and rapid, and could be carried out in the refining plant by one not skilled in chemical analysis. The present paper deals with the development of the method in the factory, giving the details of apparatus and its standardization, and presenting a comparison of the accuracy of the method with that of the standard electrolytic determination. (For variations and other applications of the method, the reader is referred to the first article.) Sublevel stoping was first developed in the Michigan iron mines many years ago. Since that time this method, and modifications with long hole drilling, have been used in a number of non-ferrous mines and have been described in various papers and articles. With a few exceptions, the operations where sublevel methods have been applied are producers of large daily tonnages from ore bodies of considerable size. In selecting mining methods for small properties or relatively small detached ore bodies, sublevel methods often have been overlooked. The method has been used success- fully in relatively small operations at Copper Canyon, Nevada, and, more recently, in mining small ore bodies at Darwin, Calif. As a result of this experience, we believe that a review of the general procedure, the advantages noted, and the results obtained will be of interest to many operators of relatively small mines.

INTRODUCTION The degree of success of an association between parties in establishing a new venture ultimately depends on three factors: a. the venture's underlying economic strength, which is based on the complementarity of the comparative advantages brought by each party to the negotiating table; b. the ability to reach an agreement which satisfies each party's objectives and constraints; and, c. the capacity to design and implement a funding structure which is consistent with the project economics. A thorough assessment of the venture's profitability and associated risks under alternative technical and economic scenarios is the basis for a sound "go" or "no go" decision. In-depth evaluation of the risks and rewards to each of the parties involved under alternative legal and financial structure must be the foundation for a long lasting "how to go" decision. The allocation of risks and rewards should be consistent with the objectives and constraints of all parties and the sharing mechanisms, established in the contract, should be flexible to assure the long-term stability of the agreement. Rapidly changing economic conditions during the last decade have had a dramatic impact on the envisaged allocation of risks and rewards between host countries and private investors. The effects of these changes, and the fact that the relative strengths of the parties involved may shift during the life of a project (e.g. before and after major capital investments have been made), have forced the renegotiation of a multitude of contracts. Therefore, the present and future stability of an economic agreement would depend not only on the originally designed provisions, but also on provisions which allow for the automatic adjustment of rewards to project sponsors under a variety of future economic situations. A pre-condition for the allocation and quantification of risks and rewards is the definition of standards of measurement used by each of the parties. This is critical in international negotiations when one of the parties represents the national interests of a country. The understanding and use of different standards for the measurement of rewards for risk taken between a government and private enterprise facilitate the negotiation of a satisfactory agreement. This is possible because certain trade-offs between the negotiating parties may have different relative values. STANDARDS OF MEASUREMENT OF REWARDS FOR RISK TAKEN The negotiating process takes a step forward when the parties are able to focus on their interests, explore different alternative solutions and then base results on a set of objective standards. Unfortunately, the parties frequently put more effort into "staking out" and defending positions, than into understanding their intrinsic interests. Moreover, when one party, such as a governemnt owned corporation, represents a country's national interests, the negotiation process increases in complexity. Private firms focus on commercial profitability, using discounted cash flow techniques such as NPV, IRR, or ROE. In contrast, the government is also concerned with the project's impact on the local socio-economic environment. Without entering into a discussion of alternative economic development theories and approaches, there exist several possible measures that could be pragmatically utilized by each party in evaluating the socio-economic impact of a project. The more complete measure is the National Profitability (NP). The NP is a discounted cash flow procedure similar in structure to IRR or NPV but in which the project's financial cash inflows and outflows and discount rates are adjusted to take into consideration the local conditions. Variations in the composition of the liquid phase of natural reservoirs which are continuous through significant ranges in elevation have been noted by petroleum technologists. In general, there is a greater gas-oil ratio and the gravity of the oil is higher in production from the upper parts of the formation. In the present paper the possible changes in composition with elevation which would result from the attainment of thermodynamic equilibrium in a uniform gravitational field have been evaluated for a naturally occurring hydrocarbon liquid, a binary hydrocarbon liquid phase and a binary hydrocarbon gas. The results indicate a progressive decrease in the mole fraction of the components from methane through the butanes with increasing depth, accompanied by a corresponding increase in the amount of the heavier components making up the system. The magnitude of these variations is perhaps insufficient to explain completely the variations in the properties of the liquid phase that are encountered at various elevations within a particular producing horizon. However, the changes are significant and the treatment presents an example of the application of thermodynamic data to the evaluation of the properties of hydrocarbon fluids under the conditions approaching those encountered in natural reservoirs. Theoretical Considerations Muskat1 has discussed the work of earlier authors relating to the equilibrium relationships of multicomponent systems in a gravitational field. He also presented explicit solutions for several cases and discussed the physical significance of gravitational concentration gradients.
