The paper discusses the system for collecting, storing, analyzing, and reporting this information and how these data are used in the ongoing effort to increase the health and safety in this nation's mines.

THE literature concerning the remelting of aluminum and its alloys is very rich. Unfortunately the greater part of the papers about this subject have no scientific value, for the theories or explanations are too often in opposition to the laws of physical chemistry. Furthermore only a few of the methods of purification1,2 are considered in the literature. Hence it has seemed necessary to the author to sketch a general theory of the purification of secondary aluminum. The purpose of the purification is to eliminate the impurities that the charges and the atmosphere of the furnaces bring into the bath during the successive remeltings. Indeed scrap as well as metal can be used when soiled with oil, greases, water, .. , if it has been sufficiently dried and contains oxides. At the melting point of the metal, the oils and greases are decomposed into their constituent elements H2, 02, H2O, C02, CO, CH4, and others. These gases are added to the corresponding gases in the atmosphere of the furnace. The impurities introduced into the metal during the remelting will accordingly be the products resulting from the action of these gases on the liquid bath. The quantity of hydrogen that is soluble in aluminum and its alloys is given by the relation of Sieverts3 as a function of its partial pressure PH2 in the atmosphere [m = K _%/PH, [I]] where K is a constant, which depends only upon the temperature and increases with it. The experiments of Röntgen and Braun4, Röntgen and Möller5, Bircumshaw6 and Winterhager7 have rendered it possible to determine the value of K, when the temperature is inferior to 1.000°K. One obtains: [log K = - 4,702.5 + 0.238 [2]] Besides its usual signification, the term PH2 represents also the internal pressure of dissolved hydrogen, since in the equilibrium, that is, when no gas exchange occurs between the two phases, the pressures of hydrogen in the metal and in the atmosphere must be equal. Eq I shows that when the partial pressure of H2 increases the amount of dissolved hydrogen in equilibrium increases, and that, if the contrary occurs, the quantity of H2 should diminish. However, if for any reason the diffusion of hydrogen is hindered and the total amount of dissolved gas remains constant while the temperature lowers, the internal pressure of H2 increases until it reaches the value of the hydrostatic pressure. At this point, bubbles of hydrogen appear in the bath and escape out of it. The amount of hydrogen in the metal is then limited by a maximum depending on the hydrostatic pressure, which is practically equal to one atmosphere. Indeed hydrogen does not accumulate in the form of a hydride appearing as a separate solid phase. However, even the mechanism of the solubility is not yet elucidated. In the Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefor?, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 Ib. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of ovcr 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 Ib. per sq. ft. of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to he given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam arc appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent. At the above-mentioned mines, electric motors have replaced the many small steam engines, so that this supply of exhaust steam has been practically eliminated. The larger engines are compound, triple, or quadruple condensing. The hoists, however, in all cases are simple and non-condensing and of two sizes, namely, 24 by 60 in. and 32 by 72 in. (61 by 152 cm. and 81 by 183 cm.). These hoists now offer the only available supply of exhaust steam; but as this flow is intermittent and varies from extreme violence to zero, the steam so discharged cannot be

IN approaching the problems of sampling coal, a brief statement of certain facts that are more or less taken for granted may be helpful: 1. The coal-mine operator needs reliable data as to the physical and chemical characteristics of his coal in order to plan and control intelligently its mining, preparation, and marketing. The consumer needs such data in order to select the equipment and the coal best suited to meet his requirements, to check the quality of fuel delivered, and the efficiency of its use. Various government control agencies require such data as a basis for classifications and establishment of limits, for use in carrying out the requirements of federal, state or municipal laws. 2. All such data must be obtained by analyses, measurements, or tests made on samples, which are taken to represent the coal tested. It is now becoming generally recognized that, in accordance with statistical laws, test results from samples are not expected to represent the exact qualities of the lot or lots from which they are taken, except within statistical, or "expected" limits. Such limits are definitely specified by some present standards of the American Society for Testing Materials and the British Standards Institution. 3. Samples that give ash within satisfactory limits are usually assumed to be sufficiently accurate for other analyses, except under special conditions such as meeting close specifications for coals showing wide variability in sulphur, fusibility of ash, or other quality. 4. In modern coal sampling the increment is recognized as the basis for taking samples. For a given accuracy the number and weight of increments specified are increased with: (a) the expected ash, and (b) the top size designation of the lot to be sampled. 5. It is extremely important that every sampler recognize that: the specified number and weight of increments are minimums, and that the precautions to be used in order to take them properly are also minimums; that in the reduction of the gross sample the sizes specified for the coal after each stage of the crushing are maximum; that the quantities specified to be taken after each crushing stage are minimum; that any short cuts or failures to meet the requirements specified will reduce the statistical accuracy of the results, although it is possible that one or two checks on a few results may seem to show otherwise.

PRESIDENT DOWLING'S ? ADDRESS I feel that it is a great honor to be invited to reply to this toast on behalf of the Canadian Mining Institute. I wish to thank you for your very cordial reception of the toast and for the sentiments expressed in your invitation to the Institute to cooperate in a series of joint meetings. It is an earnest of the mutual regard which the peoples of the two countries have for each other. We have been allies in a very great war and the feelings of good-will engendered by that alliance will survive, I believe, through the strenuous times of peace. The other nations of the alliance had through many changes in history, fought each other and for each other and had thereby gained a clear conception of the social aims and moral character of their peoples. With this knowledge came mutual trust-the one element necessary for united action or lasting agreement. On this continent the two peoples are drawn together by bonds of a common origin and, largely, a common language. No war has been necessary to force declarations of national aims on which to base terms of amity and now our peoples who had studied the arts of peace together have together passed through fire-drawn into the conflict by a like horror at the sacrilege of the crucifixion of the rights of humanity. Their courage and manhood has been tested at Ypres and Chateau Thiery by the great assayer war, and, together, with thankful hearts we see the triumph of right over night and better than ever know that we have the same conception of the government of the people for the people. We are met to celebrate the close of the association of our brethren it the front in the fight for freedom for the world-a freedom that to us hems natural but which to the majority of the allied nations is a heritage derived from the protest made by the American colonies against German ideas of government of which remnants had until then survived in Great Britain.

The present investigation has three principal purposes: 1. To develop a method for measuring hydrogen embrittlement that avoids cer, tain errors complicating previously used methods. 2. To explore in a preliminary way some of the fundamental factors controlling embrittlement. 3. To apply the measurements specifically to stainless grades of steel, whose sensitivity or insensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement has never been clearly defined. Selecting a Test Method Hydrogen embrittlement is a condition of low ductility resulting from excessive absorption of hydrogen by the steel at some period in its history, and may be revealed by almost any test involving cold deformation. Tensile tests, impact tests, and bend tests are commonly used for detecting hydrogen embrittlement; although numerous other tests, such as cold-upsetting or extrusion, could be used. The simplicity of using a wire specimen for cathodic and acid pickling tests, and the especial adaptability of the bend test to wire specimens, led to selection of the bend test for the present research. Bend tests usually have been of three general types: (I) fatigue, (2) reversed bend, and (3) single bend. The first two types, though widely used, are inaccurate because their measurements are counteracted by an aging effect; and the third type has not been developed to its fullest utility. The effect of cold-working in removing hydrogen is well known. During a bend test hydrogen can be observed escaping from the convex side simply by coating the specimen with oil; and any technique employing flexing or reverse bending may therefore have its measurements masked because the mechanical action reduces the embrittlement during the test. This factor is so important that even elastic flexing of a hydrogen-charged wire specimen should be avoided before testing if accurate measurements are desired. Developing a Machine for Measuring Hydrogen Embrittlement As for the single-bend test, its theory is good, and recovery caused by mechanical work is kept to a minimum. With a given degree of hydrogen embrittlement, a specimen will break at a given angle if the bending is applied unidirectionally and uniformly. The radius of the bend must be kept constant; and the rate of bending should be a constant, slow enough to allow reading of the breaking angle, and yet rapid enough to prevent significant recovery from the escape of hydrogen during bending. A simple apparatus (Fig. I) was constructed using a type H Foxboro drive unit A, which is a synchronous motor with a gear-reduction ratio of 600 to I. The " law of the apex," with its vague and impracticable " extra-lateral rights," is defended—if it is defended at all— on the ground that it is required by the peculiar conditions of the mineral deposits or of the mining industry in those States and Territories in which it is operative. As I have repeatedly attempted to show, in papers read before the Institute, and most recently in an article on " The Relation of the Mining Law of the United States to the Davelopment of its Mineral Resources," published in Mr. Rothwell's Mineral Industry for 1894, there is now (whatever may have been the case formerly) no peculiarity of conditions in the regions referred to which warrants the subjection of their mining industry to a burden so vexatious and injurious as this law imposes. I have called attention to the absolute freedom from expensive litigations over mining titles enjoyed by all other States in the Union and all other regions in the world where the absurd extra-lateral right does not exist.

THE A1-Mg phase diagram in the composition range from 30 to 60 pct Mg remains uncertain. Four intermetallic compounds are reported in this composition range. All of the published diagrams are in agreement as to the existence of intermediate phases near 37 and 52 pct Mg (Mgl,A1,). Confusion exists, however, as to the number and identity of the intermetallic phases present in the intervening composition range from 37 to 52 pct Mg. Mikheeva and Kurnakovl denote the existence of a phase e near 42 pct Mg. Kawakami," Reiderer? and Laves report a phase near 48 pct Mg. Eickhoff and Vosskuhler, from a critical survey of the literature, composed the diagram shown in Fig. 1, with the exception of the eutectoid horizontal of the e-phase shown at 210°C. RaynorV n a similar survey discounts the existence of the phase proposed by Ka-wakami et al.' at 48 pct Mg and reports a composite diagram similar to that of Eickhoff and Vosskuhler." A theoretical development is presented which reformulates Fick's first law for diffusion in the solid state. The diffusion flux of component i in a multi-component system, Ji, is related to its local concentration, ci, and local jump frequency, ri : where a is a geometric factor and d is the jump distance. The product, ciri , is defined as the local concentration of atomic jumps for component i. The analog to Fick's second law is also derived. A solution to this equation is presented, which permits the experimental determination of the variation of atom jump frequency with composition in multicomponent systems. HISTORICALLY, the description of diffusion in the solid state has been presumed to be best approached as an application of more general diffusion laws, known as the phenomenological equations. These equations relate the flux, Ji, of the various components, expressed in atoms, grams, or volume, to the driving force involved, expressed as either a compositional or chemical potential gradient, sumption that the flux is simply proportional to the driving force is the foundation of this approach. The phenomenological equations take the form: where the concentration gradients are assumed to be the driving force, and: if the chemical potential gradient is taken as the driving force. The coefficients Dij in Eq. [1.] are the "diffusion coefficients"; the elements of the corresponding matrix in Eq. [2], the Mij, are called the "mobilities". Eqs. [I] and [2] may be considered to be definitions of these phenomenological coefficients. A formidable body of literature has been generated about these equations; this literature dates back to their original formulation for the simplest case of binary diffusion in a fluid, by Adolf Fick, in 1855.' This description has been shown to be self-consistent. However, the "constants of proportionality", the Dij or ,Mij, are not constant: they vary with composition in all but the simplest systems. Even in the case of tracer diffusion, wherein it can be shown that the diffusion coefficient is constant, the mobility, which is considered in irreversible thermodynamics to be the more physically meaningful quantity, varies with the concentration of the tracer involved.' In more complex systems, it is necessary to evaluate the entire matrix of phenomenological coefficients, as a function of composition, in order to describe diffusion locally. Further, in order to determine this matrix experimentally, it is necessary to produce diffusion couples that have different sequences of compositions; the matrix may be evaluated only at points where these "composition paths" cross.* Finally, and perhaps most

The study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by study-ing the travel .times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs :it varying distances, major discont'inuities in the earth's crust, could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seismology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boundaries of our information on local conditions Below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called " seismograph " exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in locating salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we arc dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something quite different', in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to the other is likewise relativtly abrupt. For example, in the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, delineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results. NINETY years after the Riddle nickel deposit N was discovered in Oregon in 1864, Hanna Coal & Ore Corp. began mining operations. Until 1954 much prospecting and preliminary development work had been done on the property, but no ore had been shipped other than for metallurgical testing. The deposit is being explored by churn drilling and trenching, and a few test shafts have been put down for the purpose of studying the ore in place, determining volume and moisture factors, and gathering bulk samples for pilot plant and smelter tests. In churn drilling, 6-in. casing is driven down 2 or 3 ft behind the drill bit and bottomed at each 5-ft interval. All the sludge for each cased 5-ft interval is dumped through a splitter and one eighth is saved and analyzed. Drillholes are stopped after going through the ore zone and penetrating fresh peridotite in which the nickel content is less than 0.5 pct.

PREVIOUS investigations of E. L. Tucker and R. E. Head' related in particular to the effect of cyanogen compounds on galena, sphalerite, and pyrite, and their behavior in the presence of such com- pounds. The present contribution deals with the float- ability of the copper minerals and of pyrite. All experiments were performed on minus 200-mesh material, the method of preparation being the same as that described in the previous article. Flotation tests were made in a small mechanically agitated machine of 50-g. capacity designed in this laboratory by Gates and Jacobsen." General Naval Stores pine oil No. 5 and potassium xanthate were used in constant amount in all of the experiments; these agents were selected because of their present wide use in the flotation of copper minerals. Lime additions were varied to secure four 'final hydrogen ion concentrations, namely, neutral, 0.0005 per cent CaO, 0.003 per cent CaO, and 0.02 per cent CaO. The variation in lime addition was introduced to include the range of alkalinities employed in actual flotation practice.

Discussion of the paper of K. Huessener, (Trans., vol. 53, pp. 402 to 4333, and of the papers of Linn Bradley, H. D. EGbert and W. W. Strong, pp. 303, 319. R. J. WysoR, So. Bethlehem, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*). —At our plant (Bethlehem Steel Co.), we have had several Bradshaw burners under course of construction and erection for some time, but up to the present we have not had opportunity to put them in service. I regret that I can not take part in the discussion with some actual results from these burners. Mr. Huessener properly emphasizes the importance of obtaining the highest combustion temperature practicable in boiler practice, which demands a near approach to perfect combustion conditions. The ideal burner is the one which, while meeting the various mechanical requirements, fulfills the above condition under a wide range of gas pressure. The question as to the relative value of hot raw gas and cold washed gas for boiler use is a very interesting one. I think that in the past the importance of low temperature of washed gas sometimes has been overemphasized. Mr. Huessener has pointed out that so far as temperature is concerned, no advantage accrues in washing gas below 100" F. In many plants, there is a notable operating economy in using furnace cooling water, which is appreciably warmer than the supply water. However, in a given type of washer, other conditions being constant, the lower the exit gas temperature the lower will be the dust content; this is equivalent to saying that the more washing water is used, other conditions being constant, the lower will be the dust content of the exit gas. For each type of washer there is a certain desired average temperature difference between inlet water and exit gas, concomitant with known average dust and moisture contents, and with economical operation. With the present tendency toward smaller stove checkers, it is generally agreed that gas for stove use should be cleaned to a dust content of 0.20 grain or less. The method employed and extent of gas cleaning are clearly problems for individual furnace plants. As a general proposition, wet washing is decidedly more attractive for furnaces smelting soft, fine Lake ores than for those reducing chiefly hard, lumpy ores, such as the foreign and domestic magnetites. In the former case the average moisture content of the gas is probably 35 grains per cubic foot, the dust content is relatively high and the top temperature relatively low. In our plant, the ore mixtures consist almost exclusively of hard magnetites. The average dust content of the gas leaving the dust catcher will average only about 2 grains and the moisture about 12 grains per cubic foot, corresponding to saturation at about 83" F. The temperature is fully 100" F. higher

Addition of oil to a suspension of hydrophobic coal particles can influence its dewatering characteristics. An agglomeration process occurs in which coal particles are held together by negative capillary pressure at particle/oil/water contacts. Consequently, the units round which flow can occur are enlarged and this improves dewatering parameters such as drainage rate, solids recovery, and equilibrium moisture content. This paper discusses processes which attempt to use this principle, in terms of metallurgical and economic efficiency. The discussion is augmented by results of recent experiments on the effect of oil addition to centrifuges and vacuum filters.

MUCH has been written of the glamour of magnesium from sea water, the Aladdin-like creation of a huge magnesium plant in the Nevada desert using cheap hydroelectric power from Boulder Dam; the marvels of the Hansgirg process for the electrothermal reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon, and the ferrosilicon process for producing magnesium from dolomite. This is the story of the production of -magnesium by the electrolytic process, using steam-electric power supplied by a public utility, in a plant at Painesville, Ohio, 30 miles east of Cleveland on the shore 'of Lake Erie. The story is not without interest, since it involves several unique developments that provide the answer to a question frequently asked: How is it possible to produce magnesium metal economically at such a location as Painesville, Ohio? Basically, the answer lies in making use of facilities already in existence for the production of soda ash, which makes it possible to manufacture magnesium chloride, the principal raw material, cheaply enough to offset the high cost of electric power. To this is coupled the successful conversion of by-product chlorine into a product required for the war program. The source of magnesium for this operation is the enormous surface deposit of high-grade dolomite in the region south of Toledo, within reasonable freight haul of Painesville. This same geological stratum underlies the Painesville plant, but unfortunately at a depth of about 3000 ft. apparently too great a depth to permit underground mining to compete with the delivered cost of rock from surface quarries in other areas. The cost of dolomite obviously is an important factor, since the rock contains only some 12 per cent magnesium (20 per cent MgO) so that one dollar on the cost of stone means more than $8 in terms of its magnesium content, and more than that in terms of recoverable magnesium metal. PRODUCTION OF MAGNESIA FROM DOLOMITE In the summer of 1941, the Diamond Alkali Co. was well along with construction of a plant intended for the commercial production of refractory and other grades of magnesia from dolomite. The process to be used was designed to make maximum economic advantage of existing plant and operations by tying the production of magnesia in with the manufacture of soda ash in such a way as to make use of the lime (CaO) value of calcined dolomite. The process finally adopted after a lengthy research and development program has much in common with the old Clerc-Nihoul process, but includes certain innovations found to be necessary or

UNDERGROUND fires have been common in the mines of the United Verde Copper Co. for the past 22 years. The first fire started in the 300 Hampton stope in the fall of 1894, following a cave in that orebody. The soft and highly pyritic nature of the ores is responsible for most of these fires. Since ore characteristics, methods of mining and ventilation, have an important influence on mine fires, they will be described in this paper. Orebodies The ores are mostly chalcopyrite except on the upper levels where considerable chalcocite, black oxides and other secondary minerals occur. The orebodies are in the form of lenses and vary in size. Some are small, while others are several hundred feet in length by a hundred or more feet in width. These orebodies extend, in some cases, from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine and usually at a steep angle of inclination. There are three different classes of ores, classified in accordance with the gangue rock. The copper in all cases, except as above specified, is in the form of chalcopyrite. The largest and most important of these reserves are in a pyrite gangue. Next in order of importance are the schist ores and lastly the quartz porphyries. The pyrite, locally termed iron ores, average from 30 to 42 per cent. sulphur. The schist and quartz, porphyries vary from 3 to 25 per cent. sulphur. Mining Methods All the orebodies were worked by the overhand square-set method of mining prior to 1908; since then the cut-and-fill, shrinkage and mill-hole systems have been largely employed. But 15 per cent. of the total tonnage now extracted is from timbered stopes. Most off this is from the upper levels where the ore is soft, heavy and more or less broken to the surface. Large reserves of these ores are being conserved for more efficient methods of mining.

SINCE the last publication of tabulated results of grindability tests by the authors1 the total number of ball-mill tests made has more than doubled, and rod-mill tests have become increasingly important. Nearly all of the standard closed-circuit ball-mill and rod-mill tests made to date are included in the present tabulation, together with additional information not previously published. STANDARD BALL-MILL GRINDABILITY TESTS The method of conducting these closed-circuit tests has not been altered. A sample of the ore or other material is stage-crushed in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening with a 6-mesh screen until all of it has passed the screen. The combined minus 6-mesh screen undersize is mixed, sampled and screen-analyzed, and its apparent specific gravity is determined by packing and shaking in a standard container, and weighing. The apparent specific gravity ordinarily is about 60 per cent of the true specific gravity. The unit volume present in the mill in all tests is 700 c.c. of the packed minus 6-mesh roll product, and the number of grams occupying 700 c.c. is the unit test weight. This weight is placed in the mill dry, ground for the number of revolutions estimated to be necessary, discharged, and screened mechanically in three testing sieves of the mesh size at which the test is to be conducted. The oversize, or circulating load, is weighed, sufficient fresh minus 6-mesh feed is added to bring the total weight up to that of 700 c.c., and the charge is returned to the mill for a second grinding period. All standard ball-mill tests are conducted at 250 per cent circulating load, and the number of revolutions in the mill necessary to obtain this circulating load at any grinding period is estimated from the results of the previous period. The number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution of the mill approaches its final equilibrium value after several grinding periods, and this is recorded as the grindability, or relative ease of grinding, of the sample. A cylindrical ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, with a smooth lining and rounded corners, is used with a revolution counter. Under standard grinding conditions it runs at 70 r.p.m., and contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams, ranging from I ½ to ¾ in. in diameter.
