The material presented in this paper has been gathered by the writer during a long and varied experience on matters pertaining to the quicksilver industry. During the past 18 years he has visited practically all of the quicksilver mines of the United States and has had occasion to review the literature on quicksilver mining the world over. In a previous publication1 the conclusion was expressed "that the greatest opportunity for increasing the economy in quicksilver production lies in giving more attention to the geology of the deposits ... " The present paper is a contribution toward that end. Due to a lack of correlation of the observed facts, a great deal of confusion exists in the views of various writers concerning the mode of occurrence of quicksilver ores. This paper attempts to show that certain common factors underlie the formation of all quicksilver orebodies. It attempts to present a framework on which to marshall the observed facts and thus make clear the interrelation of various observations which at first sight appear to be contradictory. The material presented is fragmentary in many respects and it is hoped that readers familiar with the deposits mentioned may supply the deficiency. The reader is asked to refer to the publications cited for maps and additional information on the individual orebodies, as this review, in covering so much territory, must necessarily confine itself to a bare outline of the facts concerning each occurrence. The writer hopes that this paper will elicit comment and criticism from the many competent men interested in the quicksilver industry and to all of them he would express his indebtedness for the many courtesies that they have extended to him at various times in the past. Theory op Primary Concentration The mode of occurrence of any given orebody presents an individual problem to the miner engaged in exploiting it. No two orebodies are exactly alike in their geological relationships, therefore an understanding, in detail, of the geology is necessary if the orebody is to be exploited in the most economic manner.

THE literature of milling is replete with papers devoted to the subject of ball milling, all of which no doubt have contributed in one way or another to progress in that art. In this paper reference will be made to only a few of the many authors, but the value of the contributions of all who have written on that subject is hereby acknowledged. With a few exceptions the efforts of most students of the subject have been devoted to laboratory investigations of principles. Davis1 was one of the first to report on plant-scale investigations and to present to mill men certain criteria for the guidance of ball-milling practices. His conclusions with respect to the significance of sizing analyses of classifier sands in their relation to the factors of mill speed and ball sizing are particularly referred to. Those conclusions were: I. If the balls are large or the speed of the mill is high, crowding will appear at the finer sizes in the classifier sands. 2. If the balls are small or the speed is low, crowding will appear at the coarser sizes in the classifier sands. 3. The indications are that best efficiency is obtained when the screen analysis of the sands show a minimum crowding at any size. The last conclusion was qualified by the statement that it had not been proved conclusively. It is surprising, however, that the literature of later years reveals little evidence that millmen have made any serious attempt to apply those criteria. This may, perhaps, be explained by the fact that the average plant-scale ball-milling problem presents so many variables that an investigation of any one of them encounters the problem of control of the others-a problem that often is unsurmountable in a small plant. In a large plant, in which there is a duplication of grinding units in parallel operation, opportunity may be afforded for determining the value of such criteria. Nevertheless, a study of published data from grinding circuits of both large and small plants suggests that either Davis' criteria have been tried and found inapplicable or have never been given consideration. For the purpose of testing Davis' conclusions and with improvement of ball-milling efficiency as the final objective, a test program was initiated in the concentrator of the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation early in 1938. The practices of that plant have already been described .2 The fine-grinding units are arranged so that any one of eight units may be operated as a test unite and its results compared with those of the remaining units. All units receive similar feed from a common storage bin, in which the product of the fine-crushing plant is bedded by traveling tripper. The ball mills are all similar in size and operated at the same speeds, and are individually metered. The feeder conveyors of each unit are equipped with Merrick weightometers. A USEFUL and very ingenious idea was surely that of the inventor of AN a short way of extracting gold and silver from the sweepings of all those arts that handle them as well as every particle that smelters of ores might have left in the slags, and also that in some ores themselves. This is done without using great labor in smelting but by the sole means and virtue of mercury. To do this, first make a large bricked pan of stone or wood and arrange a millstone inside which rotates in the hollow of this pan like that of a flour mill. In the hollow of the pan put some of your material containing gold after it has been crushed well in a mortar and then washed and dried. Grind it in the said mill, moistening it meanwhile with vinegar or water in which sublimate, verdigris, and common salt have been dissolved. Then enough mercury to cover these materials is poured over them. They are agitated inside for an hour or two, by turning the mill either by hand or with a horse, depending on the device that you have arranged. Remember that the more the mercury and the material are rubbed together in the mill the more it can be believed that the mercury absorbs the substance that the materials contain. Finally, thus prepared, the mercury is separated from the earthiness with a sieve or by washing and thus the mercury is retrieved. Then, make it rise with a little cucurbit or pass it through a purse and there will remain at the bottom the gold, silver,. copper, or whatever metal you placed in the pan under the millstone to be ground. Wishing to know this secret, I gave to the one who taught it to me a ring with a diamond worth twenty-five ducats, and I also pledged myself to give him the eighth part of whatever profit I should gain from this

In brief, this is the story of an attempt to Americanize a process originally developed in Europe. The story will be recited in two sections, the first dealing with the process as developed by the European engineers; the second containing the improvements and modifications of American origin, together with some details of the operating results of the unit as finally assembled. Developments in other directions in this same field have not, up to the present, pointed out an economic future for the process, therefore our record here is largely a report of development progress. Whether some particularly favorable location will be found at some future time for a commercial installation cannot as yet be foretold. The project is now at a standstill. The peculiar tools of the electrometallurgist should be of great interest to the zinc smelter. The low thermal efficiency of the zinc retort, its comparatively small-scale unit and its intermittent cycle as it stood in 1925, should make this art a particularly fertile field for the electric furnace. Yet in spite of years of work recorded in volumes of literature, and an expenditure of large sums of money, there is not a single electrothermic zinc smelter operating anywhere in the world. In this industry the electric furnace plays only a secondary part today. Historical The first serious proposal to use the electric furnace for the smelting of zinc ores was made by the Cowles Brothers in 1885, but their experimental work did not advance the art to any extent. The next investigator of this field was Dr. Gustav DeLaval, a Swedish engineer well known to the industrial world through his development of the centrifugal and the steam turbine. The DeLaval cream separator is a familiar household appliance in most parts of the world. Although Dr. DeLaval commenced his experiments in the field of electric zinc smelting in 1893, it was not until 1898 that he had a practicable furnace, even then operating but intermittently. The creep properties of lead alloys have been studied by a number of investigators but most of the work has been done on extruded material and the amount of data available on rolled alloys is surprisingly limited. Greenwood1 and his collaborators investigated various rolled commercial leads containing relatively small amounts of impurities, Phillips2 likewise studied rolled commercial leads, although he did include a few alloys— such as tellurium lead and one per cent antimonial lead. But as far as the authors are aware no data on the creep properties of so-called "hard leads"-—i.e., containing from 4 to 8 per cent antimony—have been published. In this paper some data are presented on a few antimonial lead alloys and compared with a copper-bearing lead. Preparation OF Specimens All the alloys used in this investigation were cast at a temperature of 400°C. into an open cast-iron mold preheated to Ioo°C., the resultant casting being % by I by 10 in. The copper-bearing alloy was cold-rolled by 10 per cent passes to a thickness of 0.100 in. Creep specimens 16 in. long were prepared by clamping the strips between wooden blocks and machining the edges of the strips parallel by means of a plane. Careful manipulation gave parallel specimens with no reduced section and with a minimum of distortion. The antimonial lead castings were hot-rolled in 10 per cent passes at a temperature of I50°C. to a thickness of 0.400 in., the heating being carried out in an electric oven after each pass through the rolls. After the castings had been broken down to 0.400 in., they were allowed to cool to room temperature and then cold-rolled to 0.100 in. with the usual Io per cent passes. Sufficient time was allowed after each pass for the strips to cool to room temperature. The apparatus and method of measuring strain have been adequately described in a previous paper3 and essentially the same practice was used in obtaining the present data. The Wind River Formation of Eocene age is the host rock for large high-grade uranium deposits in the Shirley Basin. The major deposits are in a northwest-trending belt of sandstones that were deposited in stream channels and that were lithologically favorable for uranium accumulation. Paleotopography influenced the character and position of the belt. The major deposits within the belt are at, or near, the margins of large tongues of altered sandstone formed in the most transmissive parts of thick sandstone beds. At least two tongues of altered sandstone are present in the belt, one of which is 5 miles long, 3 miles wide, and 70 feet thick; the other tongue is somewhat smaller. Ore bodies consist of a few hundred tons to several hundred thousand tons of material containing from 0.10 to about 2.00 per cent U3O8. The ore mineral is uraninite associated with pyrite, marcasite, hematite, and calcite. Deposition is believed to have taken place when neutral to slightly alkaline, oxidizing, uranium-bearing ground water, on entering the basin, encountered a reducing environment. The reductant may have been H2S of biogenic origin. Geology played an important role in discovery, exploration, and development of ore in the Shirley Basin.

The attention of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers is asked to a description of the minerals of Southwestern Pennsylvania, as representing the minerals of an enormous area, stretching continuotisly, with local variations, along the western slopes, and at the base of the Alleghany Mountains, through Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, and destined to play no mean part in the future of the iron trade of the country. The particular locality is at and near Donbar, in Fayette County, where the most careful examinations and extensive developments have been made. The deep gorges cut by the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers, in their passage through the mountains and lower lands, give admirable facilities for observing the measures lying between the sandstones of No. 11 and the upper coal measures. Apart from its varied mineral and agricultural resources this section of country has great historic interest attaching to it. It was down the Monongahela that Braddock led his ill-fated army to its defeat under the wails of Port Duquesne, and it was up the Youghiogheny River and Dunbar Creek that the shattered remnants hastily fled to gain the camp of Colonel Dunbar, the second in command, who was entrenched upon a high knob, at the head of the creek which bears his name, and which is still known and visited as Dunbar's Camp. Numerous streams, runs, and localities preserve the names of the guides and pioneers who accompanied, in early colonial times, young George Washington, who was pushing his surveys into the trackless and hostile wilderness, and many of them taking up large tracts of

H. A. BUEHLER, Rolla, Mo. -I consider the lead .and zinc deposits of the Mississippi Valley to be the result of descending waters. There are many features that we have not determined and yet when you see the general field relations, it seems to me that the cause and effect can be well explained by descending circulation. In the Joplin-Miami district, for instance, the ore deposits are connected with openings or with old cavity fillings which have a direct connection downward from the surface to practically 300 ft. In the Miami camp, in the western part of the field, some of the deepest orebodies are directly connected with water, channels; the same condition has been obvious and always present with the shallower ores. I speak of one deposit that I have examined more thoroughly than any other in that district, the Admiralty property, which contains large openings or caves at the deepest levels. It seems to me that waters which would pass upward through 1800 ft. of dolomite would be saturated with lime and magnesia so far as the carbon dioxide of those waters would dissolve them, and therefore, on

This paper describes a series of experiments leading to the development of a method for leaching the mixed ores of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., containing chalcocite and silicates of copper, by the use of solutions acidified with sulfuric acid and carrying ferric sulfate. Iron is added to the solutions and ferric iron is regenerated electrolytically to a percentage high enough to act as an effcient solvent. The decreased yield is partly compensated for by a higher current density. An important problem in modern copper metallurgy, particularly in the Southwest, has been to obtain good recoveries from what are commonly known as mixed ores; that is ores in which the copper occurs partly as oxide and partly as sulfide compounds. The dividing line between mixed ores and ores commonly accepted as concentrating is not definite. In other words, much ore now being concentrated carries considerable copper in non-sulfide form, on which recoveries are not so good as on ores carrying less of these constituents. While treatment by concentration may be commercially profitable on ores carrying oxide copper within certain limits, there are large deposits for which the application of concentration could not be considered, and yet which have not been considered amenable to leaching because they carried too much sulfide. The Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. has large amounts of such mixed ores, and this paper is an account of the experimental work by which a method was developed for their treatment, and for which a large plant is now being erected by the Inspiration Co. It is not claimed that the method is a general solution of the problem of mixed-ore treatment but it is apparently well adapted for leaching the ores of the Inspiration Co., for which it was designed. The work done has covered preliminary laboratory and test-plant investigation, and a pilot-plant run, extending from March to the middle of December, 1923. Thoroughly consistent and satisfactory results were obtained continuously for more than six months in the pilot plant; and it is believed that the results and probable costs that can be had on a large scale have been definitely proved. The method, however, was designed for local conditions; and while the basic principles are general, there are ores on which it will not work and other ores for which considerable modification may be required.

The failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement; therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable, easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem involves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,' which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements can be made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard mortars. We have not yet begun. to realize the possibilities of automatic machinery, in part because we have not developed the designing brains, and in part because we have not sufficiently simplified industry to make possible the economical use of such machinery. The principle of the Jacquard loom, has scarcely been utilized except in weaving silk and in the player piano. It is the principle of bringing into action the various parts of a machine in accordance with a pattern traced on a steel card by perforations or as on the paper roll of a player piano. This principle gives us a control which can be applied to any kind of machine. It is a' great reserve principle for the future. But even now, with the machinery that we have at command, anyone can cut the number of employees in two, at the same time doubling his output, by installing semi-automatic or automatic machinery. And no one knows how far this process can go on. Cutting down the number of men is not just putting some poor fellows out of a job. It is increasing the number of good jobs by increasing the production per capita to a point where really satisfactory wages can be paid out of it, and this in turn- increases the amount of work required to be done and creates new jobs. Thus, cheapening in- creases the demand.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1015) THE gold precipitate from the zinc-dust presses in the cyanide plant of the Alaska-Treadwell Gold Mining Co.; Treadwell, Alaska, is treated, in the refinery adjoining, by the Tavener or lead-smelting method. About. 3 or 4 tons of this precipitate are produced monthly having a gold assay value of $40,000 to $60,000 per ton. It was formerly the practice to treat the by-products from this process, consisting of 2 tons of slag, 300 lb. of matte, 500 lb. of refinery refuse, flue dust, etc., in a 24-in. water-jacketed blast furnace. This' practice was discontinued in the summer of 1914 by reason of the difficulty of keeping the lead-well open when treating a high-grade lead product; of preventing the loss of gold in the flue dust; and of avoiding injury to the general health of the refinery operators; a plain single-phase electric furnace was substituted for the blast furnace. The furnace was constructed from an old steel acid drum by cutting off the top and introducing a cable, made from strands of bare copper wire, through the bottom and spreading the strands out fan-shaped on the inside of the drum. Powdered graphite, obtained by grinding up old crucibles, mixed with 10 per cent. cement, was tamped wet into the bottom of the drum, around and completely covering the copper wires. The graphite was carried up to the bottom of the furnace, or lead-well, and acted as the lower electrode. The sides were built up of ordinary firebrick forming a melting chamber 14 in. in diameter by 20 in. high.

INTRODUCTION The major mining operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company are located in the Sudbury Basin. Around the rim of this geo- logical formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located eleven under- ground mines of the Company, two of which are on standby. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario at Shebandowan, 1127 Km (700 miles) northwest of Sudbury. In 1980 ore production totalled 10.6 x 10 mt (11.7 million tons) from underground and open pit operations. Underground mining methods include blasthole, vertical retreat, sublevel caving, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Inco reduction operations in the Sudbury area include two concentrators, one smelter, one iron ore recovery plant, a copper refinery a nickel refinery and a high purity plate rolling mill. As well, an electrolytic nickel refinery is located on Lake Erie at Port Colborne, near Niagara Falls. In the Sudbury District, Inco employees total 14,278 of whom 6,490 are directly employed in the mining and milling operations. I T H DRILLING Background - The use of long blastholes in underground operations at Inco mines in the Sudbury district started more than 30 years ago at the Levack Mine. At that time, diamond drills were used to mine ore by open stoping and for pillar recovery. By the 1950's the concept had been extended to all mines. The heavy percussion drill was also developed by this time and led to the acceptance of the 11.43 cm (4% in.) piston diameter drifter for bar and arm and fan drill applications. The use however, of the nominal 5.08 cm (2 in.) diameter blastholes drilled radially from the level or sublevel causes overdrilling at the periphery. As well, the smaller holes are subject to hole deviation, are difficult to drill beyond 38.1 m (125 ft.) and require the need for several drilling horizons or sublevels. The need to improve blasthole stoping techniques and our experience with large diameter blastholes in open pit mining led to the trial of an I T H drill in 1962. The test was unsuccessful however, since button bits were not available at the time and the tungsten carbide cross bit experienced short life, gauge loss, and caused hole deviation and poor penetration rates. The successful application of the raise borer beginning in 1964 and the ability to drill 20.32 cm (8 in.) to 27.94 cm (11 in.) diameter pilot holes led to the development of smaller, more portable, rotary drills for blasthole mining. As a result, a mining method based on the use of 20 cm (7 718 in.) diameter, 60.1 m (200 ft.) long rotary blastholes was developed and tested successfully at our C.C.North Mine. Between 1972, when the method was first tested, and 1973 over 4572 m (15000 ft.) of large holes were drilled with rotary drills in the recovery of 175,960 mt (194000 tons) of primary stoping and pillar remnants. A new mining method was developed that made use of this large hole drilling equipment. Instead of longhole carbide drilling by bar-and-arm or fan drill set-ups at sublevels, the large diameter holes were drilled full stope height from the top sill, which substantially reduced development, drilling time and improved fragmentation. These drills however, were difficult to move and set-up, and had a high maintenance cost and low productivity. The capital outlay and extensive technical development required to improve these drills and reduce the high drilling costs however, was economically unattractive. The need to improve blasthole stoping techniques and our experience with large diameter blastholes in open pit mining led to the trial of an I T H drill in 1962. The test was unsuccessful however, since button bits were not available at the time and the tungsten carbide cross bit experienced short life, gauge loss, and caused hole deviation and poor penetration rates. The successful application of the raise borer beginning in 1964 and the ability to drill 20.32 cm (8 in.) to 27.94 cm (11 in.) diameter pilot holes led to the development of smaller, more portable, rotary drills for blasthole mining. As a result, a mining method based on the use of 20 cm (7 718 in.) diameter, 60.1 m (200 ft.) long rotary blastholes was developed and tested successfully at our C.C.North Mine. Between 1972, when the method was first tested, and 1973 over 4572 m (15000 ft.) of large holes were drilled with rotary drills in the recovery of 175,960 mt (194000 tons) of primary stoping and pillar remnants. A new mining method was developed that made use of this large hole drilling equipment. Instead of longhole carbide drilling by bar-and-arm or fan drill set-ups at sublevels, the large diameter holes were drilled full stope height from the top sill, which substantially reduced development, drilling time and improved fragmentation. These drills however, were difficult to move and set-up, and had a high maintenance cost and low productivity. The capital outlay and extensive technical development required to improve these drills and reduce the high drilling costs however, was economically unattractive. It is well known that iron markedly improves the physical properties and casting characteristics of aluminum bronzes. The use of 1 to 4 per cent iron as the principal modifying addition has become common practice in many foundries melting aluminum bronzes. Although the beneficial effects of iron are unquestioned, there is some uncertainty regarding the structural changes caused by it in the basic copper-aluminum system. It is agreed that a new constituent appears in abundance when the iron content reaches 2 to 4 per cent. This constituent, which frequently occurs in shapes resembling clover leaves, is sometimes assumed to be an aluminum-iron intermetallic compound. If this were correct we might expect a change in the structural relationships of the matrix in the direction of decreased aluminum content. On the other hand, it has been reported that iron has a negligible effect in altering the fundamental relationships of copper-aluminum alloys1 Others2'3 have reported an additive coefficient. Apparently it will be necessary to know the equilibrium relationships between the phases of the copper-aluminum-iron alloy system to establish any such theory as fact. When this has been done it may very well be that a further revision in the structural relationships may be necessary to describe the changes to be expected in commercial cast alloys. It was with this latter problem before them that the authors attempted to determine the change in the copper-aluminum relations with respect to iron. ECONOMIC deposits of barite occur in Missouri in two main districts. The most important, the Southeastern or Washington County district, is in the southeastern part of the state, mostly in Washington County with a small extension into the northeastern part of St. Francois County. Roughly, it embraces nine townships or about 200,000 acres and accounts for from 80 to 90 per cent. of the state production. The Central district, in the central part of the state, includes most of Morgan and Miller counties, and parts of Camden, Benton, Moniteau and Cole counties. The area embraced is much larger than the Washington County district, but the deposits are more infrequent. The location and general area covered by the two districts is shown in Fig. 1. There is another small area in southern Franklin County but so far its production has been of small consequence. It might be considered as a northward extension of the Washington County field. An area in the central part of Hickory County has also produced a small amount. The outline of the districts as shown indicates the general area in which deposits have been found. The total area covered by deposits of barite is only a small part of this, as, in the Central district especially, there may be miles of supposedly barren areas between ore-bearing areas of an acre or two in extent. The date when barite was first mined in Missouri cannot be definitely stated, but the industry probably dates back to about 1860. The occurrence of barite was known long before this, as it was encountered in the lead mines in Washington County and mentioned by several earlier writers.' Missouri is reported as producing 8000 tons in 1882 so it is evident the industry was well under way in the seventies in order to have arrived at this substantial production. By 1893 Missouri production had increased so that it ranked with that of Virginia, then the largest producer. It increased until in 1914 Missouri accounted for about 65 per cent. of the total United States output. The appraisal of an oil lease may often be mad,? through production decline analysis, which requires description of the functional relationship between the oil production rate and either cumulative production or time. Heretofore, attempts to define the function appropriate to a given set of production data have depended to some extent on subjective procedures. The purpose here is to introduce an objective solution, obtained by combining the principle of least squares with the theory of equations. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS The fundamental differential equation appropriate to a general class of decline curves may be written. Solution of Eq. 1 for general boundary conditions may be written in terms of either the cumulative oil production or time: These equations constitute the mathematical expression of the so-called hyperbolic decline. Their complete description for a given set of production data requires the numerical evaluation of the three parameters1.', n, D, and (go),. This fact is of prime importance in the application of statistical analysis. . STATISTICAL ANALYSIS For a given oil lease, the time, production rate and cumulative production are recorded records. To establish predictive formulas from Eqs. 2 and 3, it remains to determine numerical values for the three parameters [n, D, and (q,) .] through an investigation of the past history. Upon interpreting a, s and b as parameters, Eq. 8 may be expressed for every time interval of interest, i, over the past history as follows. DURING the war years restrictions on travel, pressure of work, and the irregular arrival of technical literature from abroad combined to severely isolate Great Britain in a period of intense war expansion of the art and practice of mineral dressing. Many British technicians were fully occupied with the day-to-day problems of improvising substitutes as regular sources of supply failed. and with mastering the strange demands and working conditions of wartime. After a long day spent between ones laboratory and production work, the rest of the waking hours were often filled with fire watching or home guard patrol activities, substituting for a night-shift manager, or "resting" in a dugout while the bombs came down. There was no time for serious study of such technical literature as survived the Atlantic crossing.
