These notes should be considered as a further discussion of Mr. S. W. Miller's paper on "Some Structures in Steel Fusion Welds."l In that paper and the resulting discussion, several conflicting opinions were expressed as to the identity of the needles or small crystals present in oxyacetylene and electric welds. An interesting specimen of an electric weld examined by the writer seems to afford new evidence regarding the needles, that may be worth presenting at this time. The specimen consisted of a piece of 3/8-in. (9.5-mm.) steel plate, about 21/4 by 13/4 in. (5.7 by 4.5 cm.) in size, on which some iron had been deposited by arc-welding to a depth of about 3/16 in. (4.7 mm.). The weld appeared to be a very good one, with no noticeable break or boundary between the plate and the deposited iron. Sections for microscopic examination were cut in three planes at right angles to each other through the deposited metal, two of these sections also extended through the steel base. After polishing in the usual way, the microscope showed that the deposited metal was full of very small, round, gray, oxide spots, while the steel plate contained quite a number of alumina inclusions and a little slag. The sections were etched with nitric acid in ordinary alcohol, and structures similar to those described by Mr. Miller were then displayed. Fig. 1 shows the typical appearance of the deposited metal, which was quite uniform in all three of the planes examined. The round dark-gray spots are oxides, and the pale angular crystals are evidently what Mr. Miller called cem-entite and Mr. Jeffries martensite, while Mr. Ruder and Professor Boyls-ton think that they might be nitride. The boundary between this structure and the steel base was sharply defined under the microscope. Fig. 2 shows the structure of the plate just under the weld; this is almost martensitic and resembles a coarse-grained casting. This coarse cast structure soon became finer as the distance from the weld increased, finally becoming very fine, with numerous small particles of sorbite. SUFFICIENT testing has been .performed with the Dutch State Mines Cyclone for thickening and desliming flotation feed at the concentrator of the National Lead Co., Tahawus, N. Y., to prove its application for this work. It is the purpose of this article to present some of the test results, operational details and advantages of cyclone thickening and classification. The metallurgy of the mill operation was described by Frank R. Milliken, assistant manager of the titanium division.

AT the Noralyn mine and mill of International Minerals & Chemical Corp. in Bartow, Fla., process instrumentation has been incorporated in three departments-mining, flotation, and preparation. Use of the dragline is the most difficult aspect of the mining operation to control automatically. At the Noralyn mine there are two draglines, a Bucyrus-Erie 1250-B with 29-yd bucket and 235-ft boom and a Bucyrus-Erie 1150-B with 21-yd bucket and 215-ft boom. These are equipped with a minimum number of instruments, but further instrumentation would increase the operator's efficiency.

RESULTS of a general survey of corrosion-fatigue phenomena at the Naval Engineering Experiment Station were presented in five previous papers.1-5 In these papers references were given to the work of Haigh in 1917.6 The five papers mentioned gave a general survey of the behavior of metals when tested to failure under simultaneous corrosion and cyclic stress. As a result of this survey the fourth paper gave a tentative analysis of the corrosion-fatigue process. According to this analysis, if the initial stress is below the endurance limit but above the corrosion-fatigue limit, the corrosion-fatigue process is divided into two periods. The first period is the formation of pits. As the initial stress is below the endurance limit, the pitting is assumed to be due to corrosion, not to fatigue. The corrosion pitting, however, is not the ordinary pitting of stressless corrosion, but is an accelerated pitting due to the effect of the cyclic stress on the corrosion. As the pit progresses, both the actual stress and the effective solution pressure increase. The increase of actual stress is due to increasing stress concentration at the bottoms of the pits. The increase of effective solution pressure is due to the increase of actual stress. The mutual intensification of stress and solution pressure continues until the actual stress at the bottoms of the pits surpasses the endurance limit. The second period of corrosion-fatigue then begins. In this period the process is merely fatigue accelerated by the corrosion. The cracks advance at a continually accelerated rate until the specimen breaks.

The electronic pickup tube is the image-to-video signal-converter or transducer in tele vision-like systems. Images may relate to visible light or IR excitation as in conventional TV systems, X-ray excitation as in some medical and production control applications, or electron excitation as in electron microscopy. The latter process is also important in some forms of light or X-ray sensitive pickup tubes as an intermediate step. In virtually all of these devices the image ends up as a stored charge pattern on a suitable target electrode and the video signal is created by periodically scanning the target with a low energy electron beam and removing the stored charge. In a major group of tubes radiation induced conductivity creates the charge pattern. In others, photoemission is used. In this paper an attempt is made to illuminate some of the device requirements placed on materials exhibiting radiation induced conductivity, some of the materials and techniques that are used, and the problems. The emphasis will be on visible light and IR sensitive targets although some attention will be given to X-ray and electron imaging. Photoconducting films as well as diode arrays will be discussed. ELECTRONIC pickup tubes find their greatest use in commercial, entertainment television, and in industrial and educational closed-circuit television. Video telephone systems, such as AT&T's PICTURE-PHONE System will become eventually the greatest user. Military use is also very important. Nevertheless the use of electronic pickup tubes in technology, science, and medicine is assuming ever greater relevance and demands the greatest diversity and perfection in the pickup tube art. Commercial television and closed-circuit television use requires visible light response, high resolution, low lag, and uniform response. Video telephone use requires the same plus extreme reliability, stability, and low cost. Military use emphasizes, in addition, sensitivity, IR response, and ruggedness. (Devices for far IR response will not be considered here.) The use of pickup tubes in medicine and biology emphasizes UV response for microscopy, X-ray response for radiology, and energetic electron response for electron microscopy. Astronomy and nuclear physics demands low light level response, storage ability, and resolution (here the tube is a successful replacement for film). The interested reader might profitably read Advances in Electronics and Electron Physics, vol. 12,' 16,2 and 22A3 and 22B4 for detailed discussion of the use, properties, and technology of electronic pickup tubes. In general, because of the importance of these uses, none of the above properties will be ignored. Nevertheless attention will be restricted to only those imaging devices, called pickup tubes, using a scanning electron beam to dissect the image with a resulting video signal for conventional CRT display. However pickup tubes have become so complex that many of them include components such as image in-tensifiers which would be normally excluded by this restriction. Thus some of the other imaging devices will not be ignored entirely. We will first review the fundamental elements and physical phenomena involved in modern electronic pickup tubes, then the relevant materials and some of the material problems and then an interesting goal yet to be achieved. REVIEW OF PICKUP TUBE PRINCIPLES In all modern television systems using pickup tubes there is an interval called the frame interval, during which the incoming radiation flux is allowed to produce a cumulative effect in the form of a stored charge pattern which is a replica of the radiation image, and a scan interval during which the stored charge pattern is converted into a video signal. The frame interval bears no fixed relation to the scan interval and may be shorter or longer. In conventional, real time television the scan interval including retrace is identical to the frame interval. Integration and storage is the key to the sensitivity of modern pickup tubes, in contrast to earlier tubes such as the image dissector. At equivalent light levels and without integration, the number of photons contributing to the video signal in the image dissector is lower by a factor approximating the number of picture elements in the displayed image, a number of order 10. Statistical fluctuations in the number of contributing photons represent a serious limitation to the attainable signal to noise ratio, resolution and contrast. As a result considerably greater light levels have to be used then in targets which integrate over the full frame period. Thus the crucial elements, common to all modern pickup tubes, are the charge storage surface and the scanning electron beam which is incident on the charge storage surface at very low energy. These are shown in Fig. 1(a). The charge storage insulator is generally very thin with a thickness of several microns or less. The surface of the insulator is held near cathode potential. The backplate potential is held at cathode potential or at a small positive voltage relative to cathode. The combination of storage insulator and backplate electrode is commonly called the "target". Some time ago the Detroit Copper Mining Co. had to decide the question whether it would pay to re-treat slime-tailings, and several machines were tested in order to ascertain the type of construction which would give the greatest saving. In previous tests on the ore of this company, several tables proved far inferior to the Frue vanner, and for this reason they did not receive any serious consideration. In the late tests, however, one table was found to surpass the vanner in the percentage of saving made. The Frue vanner used in these tests had been adjusted approximately to the slope which the slime-vanners in the concentrator of the Detroit Copper Co. had at that time, about 2 in. between the inside of the wooden posts, or 0.272 in. per ft. It had not been determined, however, if this slope was the most economical one for treating the slime-feed in the mill, or for re-treating the tailings from the slime-vanners, and I was instructed to ascertain by test-runs, under different conditions, the best adjustments for the work to be done. In order to determine if a change in the adjustments of the machines would improve the results, it seemed sufficient to continue running the tests between the vanner and the table before mentioned, keeping the feed and all other conditions the same, but varying the adjustments of the vanner from run to run. I employed a vanner-man of long experience to operate these machines, who expressed the opinion that a slope between 28 and 2.5 in. between the posts (0.323 and 0.340 in. per ft.) would give the best results. Some runs made this way gave a considerable improvement. While for a slope of 2 in. (0.272 in. per ft.) the saving had been only 40.5 per cent. of that of the table, it was 49.2 per cent. for 2.5 in. (0.340 in. per ft.) slope. A decrease of

Andre Hubaux: In the writer's opinion, more stress should be put on field and microscope observations, as J. L. Gillson does. His discovery of relics of big labra-dorite feldspars from the Marcy anorthosite in all the other rocks is proof enough that previous field observations have been inadequate. The writer's field experience with anorthositie massifs is limited to the Egersund-Sogndal district in southern Norway; however, this is a very large and well exposed area. It seems to have so many points in common with the Adirondack region that a detailed comparison should be beneficial. This comparison was not possible 20 years ago, owing to the scarcity of geological data, at least for Norway. Both regions are now far better known—the Norway district because of the work of Professors Bugge and Barth 33-35 and especially because of the extensive field and microscopic research of P. Michot,30-35 who introduced me in the field to the problems of that region. In a particular unit of the Egersund district, a sodi-fication of the plagioclase, very similar to what Gillson calls "andesinization," has taken place. 12' The percentage of anorthite in the plagioclase has dropped from 42 to 43 pct in the original norite down to 27 pct, but never below that level. This metasomatical transformation is a part of a whole series of processes of mig-matitization which have produced, above the level of granitization, concentrations of Mg, Fe, and Ti and among them, patches and parallel bands of ilmenite and magnetite. Thus both regions present somewhat comparable features and the theories to explain them have several points in common. However, as there seem to be differences between some American conceptions and the views commonly accepted at the University of Liege, I would like to make some comments about J. L. Gill-son's article. The author speaks of the garnet as being an anti-stress mineral. The war emergency has affected every phase of industry. The gas and coke-oven companies have sought faithfully to discharge their responsibility in this critical period and have willingly modified their operations where possible to meet the ever increasing demands made upon them. Our company made commitments for blast-%urnace coke for war purposes which necessitated a reduction in coking time in order to produce the amount required to meet the new demands. At the same time there were certain customers of long standing, who had been supplied with foundry and egg-sized coke produced on fairly long coking periods, who also were engaged in war work and whose patronage we desired to retain. Coke produced on short coking rates from the coal mixture we were then using would not have been satisfactory for these customers. The average width of our ovens is 19¾ in., which is a little wider than the more modern ovens of the present day. They were originally designed to give somewhat cool tops in order to produce a rich gas. This necessitates carrying the heats a little on the warm side so that the tops will be fully carbonized. A reduction in coking time, as is generally known, is accompanied by a reduction in the average size of the coke produced. This is due to the greater shrinkage that takes place at the higher temperatures required to carbonize the charges in a shorter time. The net result is that the coke is more cross fractured and longitudinally fractured and breaks up into small sizes on handling. The cokes produced from the better coking coals seem to be more susceptible to fracture at high temperatures than those from poorer coking coals. A coal mixture that produces a beautiful foundry-sized coke at 30 to 36 hr. may yield a product at 18 hr. that would be so badly fractured as to be unsatisfactory for foundry practice. Coking Characteristics OF Coals Our problem was to find some economical innovation and develop a method that would enable us to reduce the coking time and still produce a coke satisfactory to our foundry trade. However, before discussing the results of our present operations, it might be well to present a few observations on the coking characteristics of coals in general. Most coke-oven operators carbonize a blended mixture of coals. It may consist of a single high-volatile coal with a single low-volatile coal, or of a combination of several high-volatile and low-volatile coals. Medium-volatile coals of the Eagle seam are used for the production of high-grade foundry coke. Medium and high-volatile coals are often blended with one or more low-volatile coals. The possibilities are almost infinite, but the combinations are limited by such factors as cost and facilities for handling multicoal mixtures, and by other practical considerations. Every coal has characteristics that make it blend better with a particular coal or coals in preference to others. This property has

The Homestake Mine is located in steeply dipping Precambrian metasediaents, an environment common to a number of world class ore bodies. Development of a pronounced plane of schistosity raises a question concerning the importance of anisotropy to the design of vertical crater retreat stopes. Little is known about the actual influence of elastic anisotropy in such -circumstances; even less is known about strength anisotropy. A cautious step- by-step approach was therefore taken towards a numerical assessment of the role of anisotropy in the analysis of stress and stability. The sequence of analyses begins with elementary test problems for computer program checks and proceeds to the analysis of a study stope area between the 6950 and 7100 Levels of the Homestake Mine. Anisotropy (orthotropy) is important at the Homestake Yine. No simple guidelines for evaluating in advance the need for plastic and strength anisotropy in design analysis appear to be forthcoming, ;o that some physical properties testing is necessary where the question is in doubt

FOREWOHD-Americans have been able to create wealth from the nation's natural resources to an extent unprecedented in recorded history, thanks largely to the existence of a free market and of a rational body of laws. The General Mining Law of 1872, for instance, by establishing the rules of the game, was quite effective in channeling the ability of Americans to discover and develop mineral deposits. Another example was the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 which made available the more easily discovered mineral deposits by spelling out the conditions and rules under which miners could obtain leases on federal lands.

In a recent article, it was shown that in the blast furnaces in Germany that are lined with carbon blocks no cooling plates are used, and that shower cooling is employed on the hearth and bosh sections. While one of the authors was in Germany he was told that one furnace was being operated without even the shower cooling on the bosh section, though the hearth section was shower-cooled. In discussion of this interesting situation with a number of blast-furnace operators in this country, it was made clearly and promptly evident that shower cooling was very unpopular, probably because of its messiness and its ineffectiveness. Both of the causes for the dislike of shower coolings are reasonable ones. Shower cooling can be and frequently is messy, but the present cooling of blast furnaces leaves much to be desired on that score. Shower cooling is ineffective as compared with plate cooling, so far as its usefulness in keeping the bricks cool enough not to melt or fall to pieces is concerned. However, the introduction of carbon linings changes the situation. No one is concerned with keeping a carbon lining cool, for no temperature in the blast furnace has any effect on carbon, which is just as stable at 3000°F. as it is at 70°F. The only concern is for the shell—to keep it cool enough for safety and comfort— and for that shower cooling is sufficient. Of course, with only the shell to cool, instead of the shell plus all the refractory material, much less water would be required, and the necessity for constant attention to the flow would be lessened, as the hundreds of inlets and outlets would be eliminated. Probably half of the water used in cooling a blast furnace is used for cooling the shaft and tuyeres and the remainder for the bosh and hearth sections. However, in view of the dislike of shower cooling in the United States, and particularly because at least one German blast furnace is operated with no cooling of the bosh section, thought was given to the possibility that a carbon-lined blast furnace might be operated without any cooling of the entire carbon-lined portion. For that reason a series of experiments was performed to determine what might be the temperature of the shell of a blast furnace protected by a carbon lining and operated under varying conditions up to a maximum inside temperature of 3000°F. Experimental Procedure A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is shown in Fig. I and a photograph of the entire assembly in Fig. 2. The heating element was a a tubc nominally 25/8 in. 0.d. by 2 in. i.d. by 30 in., used as a resistor. Power was furnished by a I5-kva. transformer operating

The mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. IIO W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3 NaHCo3.2H2O). Pure trona con-tains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. Analyses Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells† and found to be exceptionally Pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nighten-gale‡ for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO 3.2 CaCO3), which he named shortite,² after Maxwell N. Short." He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. In addition to the 10 ft. 1 in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either i mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating | reserves. In the part of the core between i 1590 ft. 3 in. and 1600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically I to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. In addition to the 10 ft. 1 in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either i mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating | reserves. In the part of the core between i 1590 ft. 3 in. and 1600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically I to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. It is well known that particles of different sizes are not distributed evenly throughout the average charge in an iron blast furnace. Just how great the disparity in particle size in different parts of a single plane in a furnace may be is indicated by the results of some recent investiga-tion1,2 conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a furnace operating on Lake ores. The wide variations found in gas velocity, gas composition, and temperature from the periphery to the center of the upper charge column were caused by the great variation in particle size of the raw materials used and were also greatly influenced by the methods of charging. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the influence of different methods of charging and of the treatment of raw materials upon the size distribution of the solid particles in the blast furnace. A more complete report will appear later as a Bureau of Mines technical paper. Importance of Gas-solid Contact One of the authors has pointed out in a previous report? that the operation of the blast-furnace process is entirely dependent on contact between the gas stream and the solid particles in the stock. The gas stream carries the necessary heat as well as the carbon monoxide molecules that do the work of rednction. In the parts of the furnace in which there is little or no contact between the gas stream and the solids there can be little work of reduction. Obviously, the part of the apparatus that is not doing the work for which it is intended is inefficient; the ideal condition is one in which all portions of the stock column are

It is a pleasure to talk to you about the world economics of industrial minerals on this occasion of AIME's 100th anniversary. In order to fit this topic into the time and tenor of such a session as this where you are hearing subjects equally broad in scope one after the other, I will deal with the subject through the medium of eight minerals selected to illustrate import- ant economic factors. I must admit to some bias in the selection, since I picked personally familiar ones to elucidate facts of life in the industrial minerals business. It is a very interesting field, different in many respects from metals and certainly far different from petroleum. The minerals chosen are celestite, diamond, fluorspar, salt, sulfur, ilmenite, rutile and zircon. Celestite The market for celestite is mainly in the U. S. where it is consumed in the manufacture of strontium compounds for red-colored flares and other pyrotechnics, for the production of electrolytic zinc, for glass manufacture, and for the manufacture of ceramic ferrites. Smaller markets exist in Europe and Japan. Production comes from England, Mexico and Spain, and a new mining operation is being started in Nova Scotia. There is no significant production in the U. S. nor in the other principal consuming countries, except England; so it is mainly an international commodity. Celestite illustrates many of the factors important in the economics of industrial minerals. To have a marketable product, grade and freedom from deleterious elements are important for materials used by the chemical industry. In the celestite used to make strontium nitrate, calcium is the most objectionable of the commonly associated cations. Selling price is adversely affected because nitrate manufacturing costs are greatly increased if calcium is pre sent, hence less can be paid for the raw material. Meeting specifications can add significantly to the vendor's cost; hence a balance must be struck between the producer's capability and the consumer's requirements, permitting a reasonable profit for both. A method is described for measuring two- and three-phase relative permeabilities in sandstones or sand packs using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique to determine fluid saturations. Two- and three-phase relative permeabilities have been determined on Boise sandstone using the NMR technique of saturation measurement. Three-phase relative permeability to water was found to depend only on the water saturation, whereas three-phase permeability to oil depended on both the water and oil saturations. Relative permeability to gas in three-phase flow was found to depend only on the total liquid saturation. INTRODUCTION Three-phase relative permeabilities are extremely useful in calculating field performance for reservoirs being produced by simultaneous water and gas drives. Three-phase relative permeability data are also needed for analyzing solution gas-drive reservoirs which are partially depleted and are being produced by water drive. Some thermal recovery processes involve three-phase flow which require three-phase relative permeability data for predicting reservoir behavior. Unfortunately, three-phase relative permeability measurements have rarely been made. Also, because of the scarcity of three-phase data, it has not been possible to date to relate other measured rock characteristics to the relative permeabilities with a great certainty. Leverett and Lewis,l Reid2 and Snell3 have reported three-phase relative permeability data on unconsolidated sands. Leverett and Lewis used ring electrodes spaced along the length of the sand sample to measure the resistivity of the sample which was assumed to be monotonically related to brine saturation. Gas saturation was determined from pressure-volume measurements. Oil saturation was obtained by material balance on the cell containing the sand sample. This method is involved and time consuming. Another difficulty arises from the fact that the resistivity of the sand is a function not only of saturation of brine but also of the distribution and saturation history of the brine in the pore spaces. Reid2 used a gamma ray absorption technique for measuring liquid saturation. This method has the disadvantage that total liquid saturation rather than oil or brine saturation is all that can be measured and still another method is required to determine the saturations of individual components. snel13 used a neutron bombardment method which also required a separate determination of the individual component saturations. Caudle et al.4 measured three-phase relative permeability on consolidated sandstones using vacuum distillation for determining fluid saturations. Distillation after each reading makes this technique very lengthy and time consuming. Corey et a1. 5 and Naar and Wygal 6 measured three-phase relative permeability on sandstones by the capillary-pressure method. Semipermeable diaphragm assemblies were used at each end of the core specimen to keep the water phase in the core. Gravimetric methods were used to determine fluid saturations. Sarem7 recently reported an unsteady-state method for measuring three-phase relative permeability on sandstones. This method is an extension of Welge's method8 for measuring two-phase relative permeability. Although Sarem's method is simple and comparatively fast, the assumptions involved may oversimplify the problem. Sarem's assumption, that in all rocks relative permeability to each fluid will depend only on the saturation of that fluid, seems to be rather unrealistic. Neglecting capillary effects at the end of the core is also a weak assumption. Donaldson and dean9 measured three-phase relative permeability using a method similar to Sarem's.

In a recent communication, Smith and Wood described some results of 800°C compression/creep tests on WC-12 wt pct Co alloys in which plastic flow in the WC particles was believed to have occurred. The deformation observed in the WC particles was found to be a function of the rate of loading. The authors suggested that their data constituted support for the Ansell6-Lenel theory of yielding in dispersion-strengthened alloys. I do not agree with this interpretation since the Ansell-Lenel theory does not apply to the type of alloy in question. In this alloy, the dispersoid is present to the extent of about 80 vol pct. Even where there is no continuous skeleton, which apparently is the case in this instance, the simple fact is that nearly all of the load is carried elastically by the stronger material (wc).7 The constraint imposed upon the matrix, by virtue of the differences in Young's modulii and Poissons ratios, severely limits the stress level to which it may be subjected (assuming that the interfaces remain intact). If one allows for the constraint and then performs the same computation as in Smith and Wood, one finds that the stress on a WC particle is about 4 x 105 psi. This is about 21/2 times lower than the predicted fracture stress for WC. I would completely agree with the final paragraph of Smith and Wood, namely, that loading rate is of considerable significance. However. a more likely interpretation of their data is, I submit, that in the absence of stress relaxation (by secondary slip or climb) those WC-Co interfaces subjected to a normal tensile stress begin to fail. Once this occurs, the stress distribution will change rapidly and "premature" fracture of the WC then becomes quite probable. Tne serrated edges shown in Fig. 1 may very well be fine, interface fissures.
