Endurance strengths at 10' cycles, fatigue-hardening rates, and endurance strength/0.2 pct proof stress ratios have been determined jbr a range of Cu(Ni), Cu(Si), and S.R.0. Cu(Au) solid solutions. Some douht is cast on simple cross slip models of fatigue hardening in view of opposite composition dependencies of hardening displayed by Cu(Si) and Cu(Au). The temperature dependencies of hardening also are the opposite of predictions made on the basis of a cross slip model. A correlation apparently exists between the fatigue strength/0.2 Pc~ proof s1.re.s~ ratios and rates of fatigue hardening. An increase in PS/PS due to alloying or temperature change is accompanied by a decrease in hardening rate, and vice versa. In recent years there has been much interest in the determination of the dislocation structure of fatigued metals and alloys. The accumulated evidence, e.g., Refs. 1 to 5, suggests that the structure may be dependent on the stacking fault energy, 7, of the fatigued metal in the same way that fatigue hardening rates have also been shown to apparently depend on u .6' 7 The above research followed the various earlier theories relating crack nucleation to ease of cross slip, e.g., Refs. 8 to 131 so "ggesting that y may indeed be the parameter of principal significance in all facets of the fatigue process. However, comparatively little attention has been paid to correlating engineering fatigue data with observations of the above type. Certainly, it would be useful if potential engineering fatigue performance could be assessed from a knowledge of easily determined alloy properties, and the present research originated from this standpoint. TO investigate the widest Possible range of 7 would require the use of two solvent bases, e.g., aluminum and copper, but a reasonable coverage can be provided by copper-based solutions alone. Therefore, it was decided to work with Cu(Ni) and Cu(Si) solid solutions, the approximate stackillg fault energies of which are given in Table I. The y range extends from low, Cu(7.5 at- Pet Si), to moderately high in Cu(2-5 at. ~ct ~i) and two of the Cu(Ni) alloys. The values listed in Table I should be regarded as qualitative only, being derived as follows. Dillamore and smallman14 quote a value of 85 i 30 erg.cm-2 for the stacking fault energy of pure copper, based on an earlier value due to Howie and swannl5 corrected by Brown's formula.'' Since the ratios (alloy)h(pure copper) have been reported17,18 for Cu(Ni) alloys containing up to 30 pct Ni, approximate ) values for these alloys can be computed, and a rough estimate of 7 for Cu(50 at. pct Ni) obtained by extrapolation. The relatively low y value obtained in this way for Cu(50 at. pct Ni) coincides with the observation of Nakajima19 that the stacking fault probability is a maximum at this composition. Likewise, the y values for the three ~u(~i) alloys are estimates based on values given by Swann and Nuttingo corrected on the basis Of Brown's estimate that the true 7 values are probably 2.3 times greater than those originally computed. In addition to the above alloys it was decided to investigate short-range ordered (s.R.O.) CU(AU) alloys containing up to 25 at. pct Au. This last alloy has been shown to have a well-defined planar arrangement of dislocations when deformed,21,22 probably due to cross slip being restricted by the S.R.O. Engineering fatigue data was to be represented by the determination of endurance strengths, and these were to be correlated with fatigue hardening and mechanical property data. EXPERIMENTAL I, order to study the desired properties and property changes, the following alloys were prepared: Cu(2.5 at. pct Si), Cu(5.0 at. pct Si), Cu(7.5 at. pct Si), Cu(5.0 at. pct Ni), Cu(25.0 at. pct Nil, Cu(50.0 at. pct Ni), Cu(5.0 at. pct AU), Cu(15.0 at. pct AU), Cu(25.0 at. pct AU). The copper and gold were zone-refined, while the silicon was semiconductor grade. The nickel was of 99.95 p,t. purity.* All alloys were induction-melted in a *Kindly supplied by the International Nickel co. helium atmosphere, appropriate precautions being taken to avoid segregation in the Cu-Au series. Rod stock was obtained by rolling and swag,ng. A few Bridgman single crystals were grown for fatigue-hardening studies, but most material was machined into polycrystalline fatigue speciments of the design shown in Fig. 1, and into polycrystalline tensile and fatigue-hardening specimens of simple cylindrical design. In his excellent paper, Dr. Schuhmann has proposed a mechanism for conlrninution which can be utilized to explain a number of phenomena which have been observed in the size reduction of solids. The difference between the product obtained from a ball mill and from a rod mill can readily be explained by Dr. Schuhmann's hypothesis. Consider that the size distribution of the product from each comminution event is given by y; - 100 (x/ki) (1) where Yi is the cumulative percent finer than size x, ki is the size modulus, and is the distribution modulus for the single comminution event. The total product from a cornminution operation will be the summation of the products from all of the individual cornrninution events. If the size moduli from the various comminution events range from kl to kn , the size distribution of the total product will be a straight line on a log-log plot only to a particle size equal to k ,. 'Thus, the total product from a comminution operation will be a straight line on a log-log plot strictly up to a particle size equal to kl and above that size the line will curve so that y will equal 100 for the coarsest particle or k, (see Fig. 1). The actual shape of the size of distribution curve will depend upon the relative number of conmninution events of different kinds. In the case of ball milling, the ratio kn/kl may be pite large and there will be considerable deviation at the coarse sizes in a Schuhmann plot. kIowever, the grinding action in a rod mill is such that fine particles are protected from the rods by the coarse particles. Consequently, kn/kl will be quite small and the product from a rod mill will give a straight line Schuhmann plot almost to y equal 100%. In his paper, Dr. Schuhmann also has presented a very straightforward definition of grindability derived from the basic energy equation E = Ak-a (5) where E is the energy required to comminute a material to a size modulus of k and A is a constant. According to Dr. Schuhmann, the grindability of a material is the volume of material comminuted finer than unit size per unit of energy expended, this being 1/A. For comparison of grindabilities at any size two numbers are required, both = and 1/A, and anyone tabulating grindabilities should give both of these numbers. Concerning the experimental determination of grindabilities, if the material being comminuted possesses distinct cleavage, the energy re quired for comminution is given by E = Ak-(a-y) (6) where y is small number less than = . Because of cleavage, less energy will be required for comminution. To be certain that cleavage does not affect the gindability of the material being tested, it is suggested that the method used by Dr. Charles for determining grindability be used to ascertain if the deviation exponent y is zero or finite. CORROSION as an economic problem is growing rapidly in importance not only because it entails a replacement of corroded parts, but because it interrupts operation and causes hazards of damage and injury through failures of corroded equipment. Nearly all industries are interested in this subject. This paper, although concerned chiefly with corrosion in a complete refinery on the sea coast, discusses many of the various forms of chemical decomposition, most of which are found universally. The petroleum refining industry, in the writer's opinion, is seriously afflicted by the presence of sulfur in nearly all crude oils. The complete removal of sulfur from the crude as it enters the plant would cause such a relief from corrosion that this problem for research would seem to demand active attention. Next to sulfur the most troublesome corrosive agent is the saltmagnesium chloride, found in the water associated with crude oil, the last traces of which are so difficult to remove. This is much less serious, however, than the sulfur. A flowMeter has been developed at Gulf Research and Development Co. and tested in the field for measuring the flow of gas in well bores. It has been used in a study of the injection capacity of different horizons in gas injection wells in Oklahoma. The flow sensitive element of the meter is a semi-conductor having a very high temperature coefficient of resistance. Advantages possessed by this meter are the result of that property and the high specific resistance of the element. The instrument possesses a sensitivity considerably higher than any reported previously. In the application described here the element is heated to a temperature considerably above ambient by an electric current, which is supplied by a voltage source at the surface. When fluid flows through the meter the rate of dissipation of heat is increased and the temperature of the element decreases. Because of the negative temperature characteristics of the resistance element such a decrease of temperature will be accompanied by an increase of resistance which, under flow conditions ordinarily found in wells, is of such a magnitude that it can be directly measured or recorded in terms of a change in voltage at the surface. In practice, rate of flow is measured in terms of the drop in voltage in the resistance element. All the metering and control apparatus remains at the surface while the thermal element is lowered into the well on a single conductor cable, consisting of an insulated wire and sheath. The meter is calibrated by passing known quantities of gas through it either at the surface or in the hole at a point immediately above the region in which gas is lost to the formation. In case calibration is made at the surface, the ambient temperature in the hole may readily be obtained by a second resistance element which is operated at a current so low that effectively no heating occurs. The instrument has been adapted to con-tinuous recording, but the velocity of the meter relative to that of the gas must be low unless corrections are made. Curves giving data obtained in actual field tests are shown' The meter can also be used to determine the distribution of flow capacity in a gas producing well. A differential form of the meter has been designed and built in which the local flow or injection capacity of the formation is obtained directly. Introduction When fluid is injected into a well in a secondary recovery or pressure-maintenance operation the question of its most effective use invariably arises. Although the core log, when available, will show the regions of good permeability and oil saturation, there is normally no assurance that the fluid actually enters the formation in zones where injection is deemed desirable. In view of the uncertainties involved in such programs, it is generally conceded that measurements of permeability for a formation in place are more significant than those obtained by the core-sampling technique. A subsurface meter has been developed at the Gulf Research and Development Co. for measuring flow of fluids at different horizons in a well bore, and field tests have been made on the instrument in Cooperation with the Tulsa Division of the Gulf Oil Corp. THE cost of drilling in the past few years of proration and ever decreasing allowables has received increasing thought and study. It seems to parallel the strides made with respect to pumping problems in 1932 and 1933. Low profit margins stimulate the search for economies. Any discussion of slim-hole drilling involves a multitude of abstract values, and the problem can be attacked only by a study of records and rational thinking. In a measure, traditional methods must be studied with a questioning attitude. The words "slim hole" may be somewhat misleading, as the term is entirely relative. For that reason I wish to define it as used in this discussion. On the Gulf Coast, I would define a normal hole as one in which 10 3/4-in. surface casing has been set and below which a 9 7/8-in. hole is dug. With this as a datum, holes of larger diameter below surface would be called "large holes," with 12 1/4 in. as the "extra large" class and holes of smaller diameter classed in the slim-hole range, 6 1/4 in. representing about the minimum size. The optimum size has not been definitely determined, but the preference is for a program that would call for setting 8 5/8-in. surface casing and digging a 7 3/4-in. hole. Different sections of the country might very properly deviate from this practice because of differences in depth, formations, regulations, or other factors. This paper will be confined to a discussion of the drilling of exploratory wells, as the drilling of this class of wells is quite a different problem from that of drilling a proven field, although many of the same considerations apply in both cases, as will be apparent. Although for many years shallow slim-hole and core-test holes of small diameter had been dug, it was not, I believe, until the fall of 1937 that serious consideration was given to its application in drilling wells 7000 ft., 8000 ft. and 9000 ft. deep on the Gulf Coast. This does not mean that nearly all such wells drilled on the Gulf Coast now are of the slim-hole variety, but only that efforts have been aimed in that direction with very encouraging results and there has been a very definite trend to reduce the size of holes, a trend that probably will continue. As to exploration policy, there appear to be two distinct and opposite views. The one usually followed in the past was more or less designed to "shoot the works" on one well. Generally on the Gulf Coast, the depth at which production might be obtained is limited by the drilling equipment and economics. With this thought in mind, wildcat wells are often planned with the idea of carrying the depth to 10,000 ft., or even 15,000 ft. All of the possible hazards are anticipated and the general drilling and casing programs are so predicated. Such wells contemplate the drilling of large-diameter holes; the setting of at least one protective string of casing and an extensive coring policy, all of which finally adds up to an expensive well. As opposed to this general policy is the slim hole. This, on the Gulf Coast, recognizes that new discoveries represent gam-

A party, consisting of George I. Adams, of the United States Geological Survey, A. H. Purdue, of the University of Arkansas, and Ernest F. Burchard, was engaged, during the summer of 1902, in the study of the zinc- and lead-deposits of Northern Arkansas. An extensive report on this field is now in preparation. The following preliminary statement of results and conclusions is made in advance of the final publication, which will be accompanied by detailed geologic maps and other illustrations and a fuller treatment of the subject. Location.—The Northern Arkansas field embraces Marion county and adjacent portions of Boone, Baxter, Newton and Searcy counties. Outside of this area there are a few scat tered mines, notably in Sharp and Lawrence counties. The mining development lies north of the Boston mountains, in what is known as the Ozark Plateau. The country has a broken surface, as a result of dissection by streams, and there are numerous exposures of the mineral-bearing horizons in the valley slopes. This has greatly facilitated prospecting. History.—Lead-ore was discovered in Northern Arkansas by the early explorers and pioneers, and at first was utilized for rifle-ballets. Later, it attracted considerable attention, and in the '50's was smelted in the vicinity of Lead Hill. There was a revival of the industry during the "70's, but the cost of transportation was so great that it was practically abandoned. Zinc-ores at first attracted little attention, probably because they were not so well understood. Before the Civil War, however, some zinc was smelted. In the '80's, prospecting was carried on generally throughout the field, and resulted in finding zinc at so many places and so readily accessible that

Identification of the kinds of orientation relationships that may exist among crystals is an important problem in the metallurgical field. As an aid to its solution standard orientations of several orders of twins would be very useful for rapid analyses to discover high-order as well as low-order twin relationships. Although data have been published that give orientations for three generations of twins, these data are not readily useful in the form presented; i.e., in a stereo-graphic projection with one pole per orientation.' However, accurate data based on calculations of the positions of all {1001 planes for such groups would be very useful when presented in tabular form. Therefore, calculations have been made for a group of four orders of twins and the data are listed in Table 3. Illustrative applications are considered briefly, with the idea of pointing out what may be done with large groups of orientations. Method of Computing Orientation OF a Twin It is common practice to describe the orientation of a crystal in terms of the positions on a stereographic net of the poles of certain planes of the crystal. A single position on a net may be given in terms of two angle variables, two sets of which appear in the following equations: Polar Net Wulff Net x = , sin ?p cos Fbp x = r COS ?w y = r sin ?p sin Fp y = r sin ?w cos Fw % = r cos ?p z = r sin ?w, sin +, The three numbers z, y and z determine a length r as well as a direction (0, 4) in an X, Y, Z coordinate system. In the present case, r will be set equal to (h2 + k2 + L2)1/2, where h, k and I are the usual Miller indices for a crystallographic plane, a restriction that facilitates determination of the positions of poles of new planes from those of old or known ones,2 as will become evident later. Furthermore, since twinned lattices have certain planes in common, it is an easy matter to determine the orientation of a twin of a crystal if the orientation of the crystal itself is known. We start therefore with a crystal of known orientation (positions of three {Ioo} poles given) and determine where the cube poles occur in first, second, third and fourth-order twins. Methods for identifying twinned lattices and for making the calculations to find the orientation of a twin have been published.3,4' Reference 4 will be illustrated in the calculation of the orientation of a twin, even though this method differs from the one used by the writer in obtaining the following data on four orders of twins. The constitution of the indium-zinc alloy series has been investigated by Wilson and Peretti,1 who determined the liquidus and eutectic temperatures by the conven-tional method of cooling curves and the eutectic composition by analyzing eutectic exudations. Recent developments affecting the availability of indium and consequent increased interest in its applications make a more complete knowledge of the constitu- tion of its alloys desirable. As a part of a program far the reexamination of the constitution of indium alloys by precision methods, the indium-zinc phase diagram (Figs. I and 2) has been redetermined in its entirety. The eutectic temperature (I43. 5°C.) reported by Wilson and Peretti has been confirmed exactly, but their value of the zinc concentration at the eutectic, 4 per cent, was found to be high; the new value is 2.8 per cent of zinc. There is also a rather large difference between the forms of the liquidus curves of Wilson and Peretti and those found in the present studies. Geographical Distribution 'he most important known deposits in Australia of what are commonly referred to as the beach-sand minerals are along the most easterly part of the Australian coast, between Southport, 17 miles north of the Queensland-New South Wales border, and Ballina, 50 miles south of the border, and most of the production has come from this area (Fig I). Smaller deposits are known to occur farther to the south at intervals for several hundred miles, and beaches have been worked at Yamba, 96 miles south and Woolgoolga, 150 miles south of the border and at Swansea, 60 miles north of Sydney. Important deposits have been shown to exist on north Stradbroke Island and others have been located farther to the north, as far as Tin Can Bay at the south end of Frazer Island. (Fig 2). Table I gives the list of operators with the location of their deposits and workings, their approximate maximum monthly capacity expressed in tons of heavy mineral produced by their concentrating plants before separation into individual mineral concentrates, their methods of mining and concentrating the minerals, and the products obtained. This table applies as of June 1948, but all the operators are remodeling or improving their plants and plant practices will be modified accordingly. In addition, active boring campaigns have been carried out by Alluvial Gold, Ltd., of Sydney, in the Cudgen-Cudgera area, and by Zinc Corporation Ltd., of Melbourne, on Stradbroke Island, and in other places. Physiography Submergence of the order of 100 to 200 ft at the close of the Pleistocene period left the pre-existing hills as promontories and the valleys as deep inlets. Wave action has built bay-bars and sandspits in a northerly direction from the headlands, and lakes and marshes have formed between these bars and the initial post-submergence coast line. These lakes and swamps have been or are being filled in by river-borne sediments or wind-blown sand. Beasley1 has presented evidence that suggests a recent emergence of the coast line of about 10 ft. The evidence for this belief is the presence of a black sand seam 1/3 mile inland and 17 ft above sea level (Fig 3), and although it is not entirely certain that this seam is of beach formation and owes nothing to windblown concentration, other evidence supports the suggestion of recent emergence. Such emergence would undoubtedly aid the formation of bars and sandspits and the easterly progress of the beach front, leaving a series of parallel dunes (Fig 4). This belt of north-south coastal dunes ranges up to 56 mile in width and as many as 15 lines of dune have been counted (Fig 3). The foredune is generally the highest, upto 25 ft high, and there is in many places a flat platform in front of the dune known as the berm. The dunes behind the foredune are lower and less well defined

Operation of the phosphate flotation plant at the Peace valley mine of the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, Florida, began in the summer of 1942. Since that time several changes have been made in the flowsheet, with resultant increases in metallurgical results. Three flowsheets, together with the comparative plant results, are given in this paper, together with a discussion of the desliming circuit used for preliminary washing of the flotation feed. Fig. I lists the essential units in the original flowsheet at the Peace Valley plant. The figures for tonnage and grade are average for a period of two months. Mineral Separation Airflow cells are used for both the fatty acid and the amine float. Three immediate difficulties presented themselves in the use of this flow sheet: I. Floating a maximum amount of phosphate in the rougher section to give good recovery sent a low-grade concentrate to the silica float, resulting in high costs for amine reagent in that section.

Floating a maximum amount of phosphate in the rougher section to give good recovery sent a low-grade concentrate to the silica float, resulting in high costs for amine reagent in that section.

IN 1939, at the request of The Koppers Coal Co., the Koppers Company Research Department established a Stoker Coal Research Laboratory for the purpose of investigating the performance characteristics of stoker coals in typical domestic stoker installations. Fig. I is a photograph of part of the laboratory. The material in this paper deals with the performance of one coal in a single installation. Presented are details of this installation, mechanical characteristics of the stoker, and the results of a series of burning tests in which adjustments were systematically varied. SUMMARY OF RESULTS Mechanical Features I. A large percentage of the total power consumed by a domestic stoker is used to operate the gear case and motor (Fig. 3). 2. The power consumption per ton goes down with an increase in rate of coal feed (Fig. 4). 3. The automatic air control in this stoker showed advantages over manual control (Fig. 5). 4. The air velocities through the retort tuyeres were uniform around the retort, but varied between the rows of tuyere rings (Fig. 6). 5. The crushing of coal with this stoker increased the minus 1/8-in. from 1 1.6 per cent to 19.2 per cent. There was a noticeable segregation of coal as it came from the retort and distribution was not uniform (Fig. 7). 6. Measurement of air entering over the fire showed that with some not uncommon adjustments this air may he a high percentage of the total air supply (Fig. 8 and Table I). Operating Performance I. The removal of clinker was shown to give a period of poor performance characterized by a high fuel-bed resistance and a high percentage of carbon monoxide in the flue gases (Fig. 10). 2. The fuel-bed resistance was found to decrease as the fuel bed built up in a normal response to heat demand after a prolonged hold-fire (Fig. II). 3. With intermittent operation the burning rate was almost always less than the feeding rate. The wide variations were found to be greatly dependent upon the length of the On period and the length of the intervals between On periods (Fig. 12). 4. The maintenance of a low furnace draft led to less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. I3). 5. The maintenance of a minimum of excess air also resulted in less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. 14). Powder metallurgy has been described as being "as old as the pyramids and yet as new as the latest bomber." While this may be true literally, it has been only in the last Io or 1 5 years that widespread use has been made of this method of fabricating various articles One of the first items fabricated by powder metallurgical methods on a commercial scale was electrical contacts, which were fabricated from metal powders as early as 1920. The reason why these contacts have been made for so many years by powder metallurgy is because the compositions of most of these materials arc such that they could not be made by the conventional methods of melting, casting, rolling, drawing, etc. Classes of Contacts In general, electrical contacts fabricated from metal powders fall into two classes, both from the point of view of the method of fabrication and the components that make up the chemical composition. One class is composed of silver or copper and a refractory metal such as tungsten, molybdenum, or compounds thereof such as carbides. The second class contains a predominant amount of silver and a semi-refractory material such as cadmium oxide, nickel, cobalt, or graphite. Electrical contacts of the first class have been developed primarily as facing materials for heavy-duty circuit-interrupting devices. This class of material unites the high melting point, high boiling point, great resistance to electrical erosion, and the refractory characteristics of molybdenum, tungsten, or their carbides with the high thermal and electrical conductivities and low contact resistance properties of silver or copper. The second class of material is used for lighter duty or specialized applications such as heavy-duty, direct-current aircraft relays. Varieties Electrical contacts fabricated from metal powders are made in a wide variety of compositions, shapes, and sizes. In general, the sizes of electrical contacts fabricated from powders vary from contacts weighing approximately 0.001 oz. up to those weighing 3 to 4 Ib., the contacting face being as small as 0.001 sq. in. up to approximately 6 sq. in. in area. The shapes consist of: sound or rectangular buttons, some of which have radii or bevels on the contacting faces; rings, cups, rectangular bars, the contact face of which may have a radius across the width and/or at one end; and form-pressed pieces of a wide variety such as angles, both acute and obtuse, irregular shapes comprising a radius blended into a flat, which in turn may have steps. The size or shape of the contact is dictated principally by the mechanical design of the manufacturer, who in turn may have problems to be met such as: (I) size, weight, or space limitations; (2) electrical conditions such as blowout coils arc chutes, baffies, gas passages.

A STUDY by J. R. Low, Jr.1 on the effect of quench aging on the Charpy-impact specimens of semikilled 1020 steel disclosed that a decrease in cooling rate from 1275°F raised the transition temperature. This was demonstrated in his investigation by controlling the cooling rate of impact specimens to duplicate that of a heavier plate and com- paring the properties with air-cooled specimens and quenched specimens. The transition temperature of the samples that had been cooled at a rate estimated to be similar to that of an air-cooled 3/4 in. plate was approximately 45ºF higher than the quenched samples. The transition temperature of the air-cooled series was between that of the slow-cooled and the quenched series. On the basis of this work, it appeared that the cooling rate of plates after rolling in a hot mill would have a bearing on the brittle fracture of the

Analytical expressions are developed for the kinetics of dissolution or growth of a spheroidized, solute rich stoichiometric Precipitate in the surrounding matrix. There are two limiting cases; in one the rate of dissolution or growth is limited by long range solute diffusion through the matrix and in the other by the transfer of atoms across the mrdrix-precipitate interface. In the former case local interfacial equilibrium exists while in the latter it does not and the rate of dissolution or growth is controlled by an interfacial reaction. The analysis treats both limiting cases as well as mixed control in a single development, where it is found that the thermodynamic state of the interface is completely specified by a single parameter, o, defined by where K is the reaction rate constant, D is the matrix solute diffusivity, and R, is the precipitate radiz~s. If K is infinite then a is zero and local equilibrium prevails; if K deviates infinitesimally from zero, then a is very near unity and an interfacial reaction is rate controlling. Mixed control occurs for intermediate values of o. From the analytical results, numbers are computed which are useful in determining the duration of interfacial reaction or mixed control; following this time period, long range diffusion is rate controlling. THE rate controlling process or processes governing phase boundary migration has been the subject of much speculation and investigation. Traditionally, the most widely assumed boundary condition in quantitative treatments of this problem has been that of local interfacial equilibrium. This condition implies that long range diffusion of one or more elements controls the migration and is referred to as "diffusion controlled migration" (herein DCM). In contrast to the above view is the proposition that local interfacial equilibrium does not exist and that transport of atoms across the interface is rate controlling. Consequently, this mechanism is referred to as "interface controlled migration" (herein ICM). In processes of the latter type, the activity, a, of one or more elements is discontinuous at the phase bound- ary and the flux, J, across the boundary of a given element is some function of its activity discontinuity, a. THE large increase in the use of selective flotation as contrasted with the collective flotation of a few years ago has focussed attention on the desirability of achieving accurate control of the pH of mill circuits. Although it is well-known that alkaline circuits result in dropping pyrite and that acid circuits conversely float it, but drop the gangue, there is little that is known, beyond question, ass to the action of the acidity or alkalinity of the circuits. A complete answer is not available at present but experiments -are now in progress at the University of Utah, whose aim is to find out what the effect is on recovery of a change in hydrogen-ion concentration and how this change is brought about. Broadly speaking, a change in hydrogen-ion concen¬tration seems to affect either the mineral surface, as was suggested by A. W. Fahrenwald in his paper "Surface Reactions in Flotation"1 (TRANS. 70, 647) or the attachment of the collecting agent on the mineral surface.

IN a previous publication1 1200°C isothermal phase diagram sections were given for the Cr-CO-Ni, Cr-Co-Fe, Cr-Co-Mo, and Cr-Ni-Mo ternary systems, in which the a phase formed narrow, elongated solid solution fields. The present investigation is concerned with the 1200°C isothermal sections of the Co-Ni-Mo, Co-Fe-Mo, and Ni-Fe-Mo ternary systems. A prominent feature of these systems is the presence of narrow, elongated µ phase fields. The crystal structure of the phase designated as µ both here and in the previous publication1 was determined by Arnfelt and Westgren.2 For the (CO, W)µ phase, named by them Co,W, (and also frequently designated as a), these authors found that the crystal system is hexagonal-rhombohedra1 and the space group is D53d — R3,. Westgren and Mag-neli3 later found that isomorphous phases exist in the Fe-W and the Fe-Mo systems (these phases are often referred to as < and E, respectively). Henglein and Kohsok4 stated that the phase described by them as Co7Mo,; (otherwise frequently designated as c) is also isomorphous with the above three. The Co-Fe-Mo system was investigated at 1300°C by Koester and Tonn,5 who found a continuous series of solid solutions between (Co, MO)µ and (Fe, MO)µ Koester6 also indicated similar uninterrupted solid solutions in the Ni-Fe-Mo system. However, since the Ni-Mo binary system does not have a phase isomorphous with F, Koester&apos;s diagram is expected to be erroneous. No data appear to be available in the literature concerning the Co-Ni-Mo system. The face-centered cubic (austenitic) solid solut,ions of iron, nickel, and cobalt, which are quite extensive in all three systems at 1200°C, are here designated as the a phase. The body-centered cubic (ferritic) solid solutions, based on iron, are designated in this report as the ? phase, in conformity with the nomenclature used previously.&apos; Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared by vacuum induction melting in zirconia and alumina crucibles. The lot analyses for the metals used have been given.&apos; The number of alloys prepared was 46 for the Co-Ni-Mo system, 65 for the Co-Fe-Mo system, and 113 for the Ni-Fe-Mo system. The compositions of these alloys were selected with due regard to maximum usefulness in locating phase boundaries. The alloy specimens were annealed at 1200°C in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct helium and 8 pct hydrogen mixture. Alloys consisting almost entirely of the face-centered cubic austenitic a phase, or of the body-centered cubic ferritic c phase were double-forged with intermediate annealing. The double-forged specimens were then final annealed for 90 hr at 1200 °C and quenched in cold water. Alloys containing considerable amounts of any of the other phases could not be forged. Such specimens were annealed for 150 hr at 1200°C and quenched. Microscopic specimens of all alloys were prepared by mechanical polishing, in many cases followed by electrolytic polishing. Description of the polishing and etching procedures used and tabulation of the intended compositions of the alloys prepared are being published in two N.A.C.A. Technical Notes.7,8 , Many of the alloys were analyzed chemically and, in general, the results are in excellent agreement with the intended compositions. X-ray diffraction samples were prepared by filing or crushing homogenized alloy specimens and by reannealing the obtained powders in evacuated and sealed quartz tubes. After annealing for 30 min at 1200°C the tubes were quenched into cold water. X-ray diffraction patterns were made with unfiltered chromium radiation at 30 kv, using an asymmetrical focusing camera of high dispersion. X-ray diffraction and microscopic methods were used jointly to identify the phases present in each specimen. The amounts of the phases in each alloy were estimated microscopically. The phase boundaries were located by the disappearing phase method. The results were used to construct 1200°C isothermal sections for the three ternary phase diagrams. The accuracy of the location of the phase boundaries determined in this manner is estimated to approximately ±1 pct of each component. The portion of the three phase diagrams lying between the µ, P, and 6 phases on the one hand, and the molybdenum corner on the other, has not been investigated. Recently Metcalfe reported0 a high temperature allotropic form of cobalt on the basis of dilatometric results and of cooling curves. In the present work no attempt was made to search for the new phase in the cobalt corner of the Co-Fe-Mo and Co-Ni-Mo systems. No alloy was prepared with more than 80 pct Co; the alloys used were intended to locate the boundary of the a phase saturated with cL. The microstructures of the quenched a alloys near the cobalt COrner gave no suggestion of an in-suppressible transformation On quenching. The location of the boundaries of the a + ? two-phase fields in the Fe-Ni-Mo and Fe-CO-MO systems was determined entirely by the microscopic method. The face-centered cubic a alloys near the ? field transform partially or wholly into the body-centered cubic ? phase on quenching from 1200°C to room temperature. The ? formed in this manner has an

IT has been known for many years that when a wire is moved in a magnetic field, an electromotive force is developed which is proportional to the rate at which the wire is moved in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic intensity and to the magnetic intensity itself. If the ends of the wire are connected to a current indicator, the current behaves exactly as though the source of electromotive force were a galvanic cell. If a wire is wound circularly and rotated uniformly around a diameter not parallel to the intensity, the current flowing through the wire will be alternating of sinusoidal shape. If, instead of a single loop, there are several turns wound in a short helix, the electromotive force developed will be approximately proportional to the number of turns, the area of the helix and to the speed of rotation. The maxi-mum electromotive force will be devel-oped when the axis of rotation is perpen- dicular to the field; if this is not so, only the component of the intensity that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation is effective. This is the principle of the usual earth inductor. If two similar coils are rotated together at two different points for which the magnetic field intensities perpendicular to the axes of rotation are different, the electromotive forces developed will each depend on its corresponding intensity and be a measure of that intensity.
