The application of oil to coal for-the reduction of dust has greatly increased the consumers' satisfaction with solid fuels, especially those for domestic use. The combination of oil-treated coal and automatic firing by a small stoker has made possible clean, automatic heating with bituminous coal. This, with the added pressure of competition by other fuels, has caused a rapid development of oil treating practice. A variety of materials derived" from petroleum oils is available from which one may choose for treating a par-ticular coal. Until recently, however, little information had been published to guide the choice. It is most im-portant that the proper type and amount of oil be used in order that all coals marketed as "dustless" will be reason-ably dustless, and thereby maintain a good reputation for oil-treatment. During the past two and one-half years, an investigation of a number of the problems related to the treatment of coal with oil has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. This project was jointly sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research. Inc., Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Sun Oil Company, and Viking Manufacturing Company. A progress report giving the principal results of the work of the first year was presented before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 1937.1 The present paper is a summary of the entire inves-tigation.

THE valuable results that have followed the application in recent years of microscopic methods of research to problems of ore genesis have been significant, but possibly the recognition of their practical importance is not as general as might be, and while, as a scientific method of investigating ores and rocks, the advantage derived through the use of the microscope is unquestioned, its utility as an aid in solving shining problems arising during actual every-day mine examination and operation may not be fully appreciated. Perhaps the roost logical method of showing some of these practical applications of the microscope will be to consider first the prospect stage of a mining venture, then the uses to which the instrument may be put during the operation of a working and developed mine, and, finally, to discuss some of the problems of a metallurgical nature that ii-my arise during milling and smelting the ore. The valuation of mining property as a preliminary to acquiring ownership or determining the advisability of investing time and money in an enterprise is one of the most important and delicate problems that come before the mining engineer. The many and variable factors that have to be taken into account, as, for example, the geology of the district, availability of supplies, probable mining costs, transportation facilities, and the quality of ore, require a careful balancing of costs against recoverable values.

Theoretical and experimental investigations of a constant pressure gravity drainage system are reported. Experimental data are presented to show that recovery to gas breakthrough by gravity drainage is inversely proportional to rate. The gravity drainage reference rate, which is numerically equal to the so-called "maximum theoretical rate of gravity drainage" is shown to have no particular significance from a recovery standpoint. Before this rate can be used as a basis of comparison for recoveries, it is necessary that the relative permeability and capillary pressure characteristics and displacing fluid viscosities be identical for the systems compared. A method is presented by which accurate prediction of the performance of a gravity drainage system can be made. Close agreement between experimental and calculated drainage performance shows that steady state relative permeability and static capillary pressure data can be used to describe fluid displacement behavior. The very wide range of liquid recoveries before gas breakthrough which result from production rate variation alone demonstrates the importance of this factor in planning depletion of a gravity drainage reservoir. Calculated results are presented which show that little additional recovery can be expected from a high pressure gravity drainage system between the times of gas breakthrough and attainment of such high gas/liquid ratios as to make further pressure maintenance impractical. INTRODUCTION It bas been recognized for some time that gravity forces play an important part in the recovery of oil from some types of reservoirs. Field experience has shown that under certain conditions, gravity drainage can result in very high oil recov- eries. Qualitative reasoning has led most engineers to the general conclusions that: (1) Where gravity drainage is important, the reservoir pressure should be maintained by gas injection at the crest of the structure to prevent shrinkage of the oil in place and to keep a low viscosity so the oil can drain at the fastest possible rate. (2) Recovery by gravity drainage is rate sensitive. A survey of the literature indicates that while considerable work has been done on the effects of gravity in oil production problems, no satisfactory method of calculating the performance of gravity drainage reservoirs has been reported.1,2,3,4,5 In the absence of any proven method of calculating reservoir performance, the level at which pressure should be maintained and the rate of production for most efficient operation has been open to debate. The limits and general character of the recovery us rate relationships are apparent from the following: As rates of production approach zero, oil will drain by virtue of its own weight fast enough that the saturation distribution is always approximately the same as the original static capillary distribution. That is, at the gas-oil contact the liquid saturation goes from 100 per cent to a value of perhaps 10 to 30 per cent in a very short distance, so that as production continues. a relatively sharp gas-oil contact moves down-structure, leaving a very low residual oil saturation in the originally oil saturated zone. At very high rates of production, the oil that drains by virtue of its own weight is negligible and recovery will approach that of a horizontal gas drive, leaving a much higher residual oil saturation. At intermediate rates of production. recovery should be between these extreme*. Despite the lack of quantitative methods, tentative agreement had been reached on the question of optimum producing rate. The effect of dissolved sulphur on the surface tension of liquid copper has been measured by a sessile-drop method at 1120°C. Sulphur is highly "surface active" in liquid copper; the surface tension lowering is about 650 dynes per cm for a sulphur content of 0.6 pct. The degree of adsorption of sulphur on the liquid copper surface has been calculated, and various models of the surface layer have been tested against the results. THE science and technology of surface chemistry and physics at room temperature are relatively advanced, and the engineer possesses a background of information that allows him to predict and control many phenomena—such as frothing, emulsifica-tion, wetting of solids by liquids, flow through capillaries, adsorption, mineral flotation, penetration of porous bodies by liquids—which are related to the behavior at interfaces. Surface phenomena in high temperature systems are probably of equal importance to the metallurgist and ceramist, but at present are incompletely understood. Frothing of liquid slags, penetration of refractories by liquid metals and slags, infiltration of powder metallurgy "skeletons" by liquid metals, bonding of metals to ceramic oxides in the manufacture of "cermets," wetting of one metal by another for purposes of soldering and welding, are but a few of the many phenomena of metallurgy that are controlled by surface behavior. Concerning the most elementary of surface properties—the gas-liquid surface tension—the existing data on liquid metals are inadequate. For the surface tension of "pure" metals the results of different investigators differ by 10 or 20 pct. The role of surface-active agents in liquid metals is relatively unknown, and it is not unlikely that the discrepancy in the values for the surface tension of pure metals is due to the presence of traces of surface-tension-lowering impurities in the samples. Based on analogy to room-temperature systems, the highly surface-active impurities in liquid metals should be elements or compounds of limited solubility in the liquid metal and possessing considerably weaker in-termolecular bonding forces than the metal itself. The nonmetals of the V, VI, and VII groups of the periodic table might be expected to act in this way. The experimental work in this paper represents a study of the surface tension of pure liquid copper in hydrogen at 1120°C, and the effect of dissolved sulphur (which is a strongly surface-active agent in liquid copper) on the surface tension of copper. The Gibbs equation has been applied to the results and an attempt made to correlate the surface tension behavior with two models of the interfacial layer. The sessile-drop method for surface-tension measurement at high temperatures which was used in this investigation has been described by several investigators.1,2 It involves the measurements of the dimensions of a stationary liquid drop on a horizontal surface. From these dimensions and the liquid density, the surface tension of the liquid may be calculated either by means of various approximate formulas, or more accurately by means of the Bash-forth and Adams tables.- or liquid drops which exhibit a contact angle greater than 90°, by far the simplest dimensions to measure are those indicated in Fig. 1, i.e., the diameter of the maximum horizontal cross section (2X) and the maximum height (Z) above this plane. In order to calculate the contact angle and the volume of the drop, the diameter at the base of the drop (2a) and the total height (h) also must be measured. Upon investigation of the literature, the authors failed to discover a concise statement of the accuracy of the method when used in conjunction with the Bashforth and Adams tables, hence a careful examination of the tables was made and the curve shown in Fig. 2 was constructed. The Putnam Coal Mine, at design capacity, will be the third largest underground bituminous coal mine in the world and will feature the world's longest single flight belt conveyor. Construction is now in process; initial mining will commence in early 1969 and design capacity will be reached in 1971. The Putman Coal Mine reserves are located in south-central West Virginia and contain approximately 27,000 acres of prime Pittsburgh No. 8 coal; reserves are sufficient to support a 3.5 million tpy operation for over 30 years. The mine portal area is located some six miles inland from the Kanawha River. The river loading facility is located approximately 156 miles by way of river from the market.

To MOST mine operators, it seems evident that there is a drill-steel problem, although under certain conditions the amount f drill-steel breakage does not appear serious. What is at fault? It may be one or a combination of circumstances. The development of rock drills to the hammer-drill type in place of the old reciprocating piston drill, probably is one important cause for the greater steel breakage. Perhaps the manufacturers of drill steel have failed to realize what alloys are needed for this new service or have overlooked the changes in the art of rock drilling. Although suitable alloys are provided, they may not be so handled in the manufacturing process as to be in the best condition to withstand the demands of rock drilling. The mine operator may be at fault in desiring to use the smallest possible drill-steel section in order that the gage of the drill bits may be correspondingly small and the amount of footage drilled per unit of labor may be greater; or the black-smithshop practice at the mines may need improvement. The miner who uses the drill steel may also require more intensive supervision and education. Again, the manufacturer of rock drills may have failed to study the types of blows the steel alloys will withstand satisfactorily and which their tools are delivering and so he may not know whether or not a different design of rock drill would equal or excel their present drilling speeds without treating the drill steel so severely. All of these hypotheses probably have their supporters. On the other hand, perhaps we are seeking too much service from drill steel and we need a fuller realization of the fatigue strains developed and should prepare to relieve these by a periodic heat treatment of the steels. However, we do not find any proof that any of these suppositions may be held responsible for the drill-steel breakage attendant to mining. The proposed investigation of this matter by the U. S. Bureau f Mines is fully warranted in the promotion of the conservation of labor and material, and the safety of the workmen. The in situ deformability of rock masses is determined by relating the applied load to the radial displacements of points on the borehole wall that are outside of the loaded surfaces. The external displacement method includes the steps in which: a) radial displacement sensors are installed to measure the change in length of a diameter of a borehole; b) unidirectional self- equilibrating pair of forces perpendicular to the direction of radial displacement measurements are applied on opposite sectors of the borehole wall, and; c) using elastic theory, the in-situ deformability of the rock mass can be related with the applied loads and measured radial displacements. The displacements outside the loaded surfaces are comparatively smaller in magnitude than displacements inside the loaded surfaces. These displacements, however, are sufficiently large and can be measured precisely by commercially available linear displacement sensors. Loads are applied by a conventional borehole jack. Existing methods for measuring the in situ deformability of rock masses yields unreliable results due to complex boundary stresses, small and varying contact areas, and the existence of fractures. It was shown that in the external displacement method, the effect of boundary pressure distribution and contact area are negligible. Also, since the displacements measured in the external displacement method were due to materials that are deeper inside the rock mass, borehole fractures have less influence on the calculated deformation modulus.

The relationship between the apparent angle of rotation of monochromatic plane polarized light and the tilt of the basal pole from the surface normal has been experimentally determined for zirconium over the wavelength range of 500 to 655 mp. This relationship allows the determination of the spatial orientation of the basal pole of an individual grain in a polycvystal-ling zivrconium specimen to within ±3 deg by three simple tneasurements with a polarized-light metallurgical microscope. The method of measurement is discussed in detail. THE optical anisotropy of materials having noncubic crystal structures has long been used to reveal features by polarized-light microscopy. Petrographers have used measurements of certain optical properties to identify and classify transparent or translucent minerals. More recent work (i.e., Cameron1) has extended such measurements to opaque minerals in reflected light. Few attempts have been made to make similar measurements on noncubic metals. Couling and pearsall2 have reported that a sensitive tint plate can be used in a polarized-light metallurgical microscope to determine the position of the basal-plane trace in a grain of polycrystalline magnesium. Reed-Hill3 has reported that the same technique can be used for zirconium. We have found that the precision of measurement can be increased to about ±0.5 deg by using a Nakamura plate4,5 to determine the exact extinction position after the sensitive tint plate has been used to locate approximately the basal-plane trace. This report describes a method for measurement of another optical property, the apparent angle of rotation. This measurement permits determination of the angle between the basal pole of a grain of a hcp metal and the normal to the surface of the specimen. When the two measurements are combined, the orientation of the basal pole in space can be determined from three simple measurements on a single surface. One to two hundred such determinations will permit plotting of a basal-pole figure for the polycrystalline material with reasonable accuracy. When normally incident, monochromatic, plane-polarized light is reflected from the surface of an optically anisotropic material, the light may be converted to elliptically polarized light, the plane of vibration may be rotated, or both may occur. The el- lipticity, the angle of rotation, and the reflectivity can be related to the indices of refraction and the absorption coefficients of the material.6,7 Ellipticity values can be determined with an elliptical compensator, but not with the ease and precision desirable for the present purposes. Measurement of the angle of rotation requires only the determination of the angle from the crossed position (90 deg to the polarizer) that the analyzer must be rotated to obtain extinction when the trace of the optical axis in the surface is at 45 deg to the vibration direction of the polarizer. The angle of rotation of the analyzer is approximately 6/5 that of the true angle of rotation of the light as reflected from the specimen because there is a small amount of additional rotation produced during the passage of the reflected light through the mirror of the microscope. Since we are presently interested only in determining the tilt of the basal pole, the angle of rotation of the analyzer (the apparent angle of rotation of the light, i.e., uncorrected) can be used. Precision of the measurement can be increased substantially by the use of a Nakamura plate4,5 in determining the extinction position. In an optically uniaxial material (hcp or tetragonal crystal structure) the angle of rotation depends only on the optical properties of the material and the orientation of the optical axis of the grain relative to the plane of incidence of the plane-polarized light.7,8 Thus, in a metal such as zirconium, the apparent angle of rotation at the 45-deg position in any given wavelength of light is a direct measure of the tilt of the basal pole from the normal to the surface. If the optical properties vary with wavelength, the apparent angle of rotation for any given tilt of the basal pole will vary. None of the required information exists in the literature for zirconium nor for any other non-cubic metal. MEASUREMENTS ON SINGLE-CRYSTAL ZIRCONIUM A single-crystal sphere of zirconium 9/16 in. in diam was spark-cut from a single-crystal rod grown from iodide bar by an electron-beam zone-melting process.9 The damaged surface was removed by chemical polishing in a 45/45/10 mixture (by vol) of water, concentrated HNO3, and HF (48 pct) and then electropolishing at 50 v in a bath1' of methyl alcohol and perchloric acid (95/5 by vol) at -70-C. The single-crystal sphere was mounted in a five-axis goniometer stage having a removable eucentric X-ray diffraction goniometer head for the two inner orientation axes. The basal pole of the single-crysta sphere was aligned parallel to a third axis of the goniometer stage by using the sensitive tint method to determine the basal-plane trace at several rotational positions of the sphere. INTRODUCTION AND PREVIOUS WORK THE determination of the low temperature tensile properties of tin and tin-lead alloys was initiated as part of an extensive research program on the phasial equilibria of tin binary systems below 13.2°C and the property changes associated therewith. A survey of the literature revealed that, although some room temperature tensile data were available for tin and a few tin-lead alloys, there existed no survey report of the low temperature tensile properties of these alloys. Accordingly, the tensile data for tin and a series of pure tin alloys containing from 0.01 to 50 pct lead were measured at eleven temperatures from -196 to +20°C and are presented here in survey form. In addition to the importance of these tensile data as a preliminary to certain fundamental research, this information promises also to be of commercial importance because of the 'extensive use now being made of tin-lead solders in refrigeration and gas liquefaction equipment. Occasional failures of the solders in low temperature service have been attributed by some metallurgists to low temperature mbrittlement, while others hold that failure results from the transformation of the tin-rich phase of the solder from the solid white (beta) to the powdered gray (alpha) form. From the data previously available in the literature, neither of these explanations can be completely corroborated. Cohen and van Lieshout1 have established the beta to alpha tin transformation at 13.2°C and have shown that strain accelerates the transformation. Further, they showed that although I pct lead retarded the transformation, it was not eliminated. It will be pertinent, then, to note whether the beta to alpha transformation of the tin-rich phase will occur in a short-time tensile test. Polanyi and Schmid2 studied the tensile . properties of tin single crystals at -185°C and report that tin is brittle at-this temperature. In 1946, Kostenets3 reported that pure tin was brittle at -196 and -253°C, while lead remained ductile at both these temperatures. He also studied the tensile properties of tin-lead alloys containing from 10 to 75 pct lead at -253, -196 and +17°C. The ultimate tensile strength increased more than two times in going from room temperature to -196°C and about three times that value on further cooling to -253°C. All the alloys were brittle at -6°C except those containing more than 75 pct lead. Even at -253°C, the 75 pct lead alloy retained 36 pct elonga¬tion in a 30 mm-ga. length. Tars paper describes briefly the topography and geology of the region where the mica-bearing pegmatites are found and discusses prospecting, the quality of the mica, its preparation, and evaluation of the deposits. Muscovite mica occurs in a number of widely separated localities in Brazil, but production has come largely from deposits in the southeastern and eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. I). There the deposits form a discontinuous zone, which starts at a point 90 km. north of the city of Rio de Janeiro and extends north for some 500 km., roughly parallel to the coast. A maximum width of 180 km. is reached along the Rio Doce. To the west in Minas Gerais, and extending east into the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, the mica zone proper is fringed by areas in which there are scattered occurrences of mica-bearing pegmatites. A few of these outlying deposits have produced commercial mica, but most of them are unimportant. To the southwest, in the State of São Paulo, there are a number of mines, which at one time produced a very considerable amount of sheet mica, largely as a by-product of kaolin mining. These deposits, and, a few others lying between them and the main productive areas to the northeast, appear to be the southwestern continuation of the strong Minas Gerais mica zone. In the vicinity of Conquista, just north of the Minas Gerais boundary in the State of Bahia, and still farther north, near Jacobina, there are several known mica deposits. Their location indicates that they may be the northern continuation of the main mica zone. The major part of Brazilian mica production has come from four areas within the mica zone proper; from north to south, Governador Valadares, Raul Soares, Espera Feliz, and Muriaé. The first is 190 km. from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 180 km. The Raul Soares area extends 135 km. from northeast to southwest, and in places is 80 km. wide. The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriaé area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. The unusual interest taken in the papers on steel at the New York (1922) meeting showed that the time is ripe for the renewal of the general discussion of the physics of steel, on the same lines that wete used formerly and produced such good and lasting results. The curves shown in Figs. 1 to 4 and the appendix were added to my paper1 after the February meeting, but, unfortunately, Figs. 1 and 3 were transposed; the curves on page 252 are for bessemer steel and belong on page 254; while those on page 254 are for open-hearth steel and belong on page 252. These errors are evident at once on referring to the data in Tables 1 and 2, pages 227 and 228. The curves for each 0.05 per cent. of carbon and manganese in basic open-hearth steel are given in Figs. 1 and 2; these lines for the lower carbons and manganese are comparatively uniform. Figs. 3 and 4 give similar lines for carbon and manganese in bessemer steel. The large break in the carbon lines from 0.55 per cent. to 0.60 per cent. is caused by much higher silicon in the steels of 0.60 per cent, carbon and over that are used for springs, etc. The estimated ultimate strength of pure iron, and the increase in strength by carbon, phosphorus, and manganese, with the different views regarding the same, were given and diseussed. All of this can be considered as an introduction to the practical use that is now being made of such data in selecting the heats of steel best suited to give the required physical tests called for in the finished rolled material. The chemical composition of the steel, of course, tells only a part of the story, as many other factors that have an influence on the physical properties of the steel must be considered, and controlled as far as is possible. Some of these have already been referred to, but there are other important ones to be considered and discussed.

The curves for each 0.05 per cent. of carbon and manganese in basic open-hearth steel are given in Figs. 1 and 2; these lines for the lower carbons and manganese are comparatively uniform. Figs. 3 and 4 give similar lines for carbon and manganese in bessemer steel. The large break in the carbon lines from 0.55 per cent. to 0.60 per cent. is caused by much higher silicon in the steels of 0.60 per cent, carbon and over that are used for springs, etc. The estimated ultimate strength of pure iron, and the increase in strength by carbon, phosphorus, and manganese, with the different views regarding the same, were given and diseussed. All of this can be considered as an introduction to the practical use that is now being made of such data in selecting the heats of steel best suited to give the required physical tests called for in the finished rolled material. The chemical composition of the steel, of course, tells only a part of the story, as many other factors that have an influence on the physical properties of the steel must be considered, and controlled as far as is possible. Some of these have already been referred to, but there are other important ones to be considered and discussed.

H. H. Kellogg (Columbia University)—The accurate measurements of the equilibrium gas ratios for the reaction: Pb(1) + H2S = PbS(c) + H2 [I] reported in this paper are a distinct contribution to the literature, and the authors are to be congratulated. I wish to comment, however, on the correlation of the data which is presented. The authors show a straight line correlation of log H2S/H2 vs 1/T, Fig. 1, and are satisfied with this for calculation of ?Fo even when extrapolated to low temperature (427 °C). Heat capacity data for the constituents of this reaction are available (at least to 900°K), however, and ACP for reaction [I] is finite and positive in the temperature range studied. Simplification of the heat capacity equations yields: ?CP= 2.71 + 1.65 x 10-3T (298°-900°K) This positive value of ?CP should result in a small but noticeable curvature of a plot of log K vs 1/T. That the experimental data fail to show such a curvature may be traced to another oversimplification of the author's treatment of their data. The laminarturbulent transition was studied for monodisperse rigid polymer latices as functions of particle diameter and concentration at several tube diameters. Breaks in the graph of friction factor US Reynolds number were used to characterize the transition; rates of shear were sufficiently high so that Newtonian behavior at the high shear limiting viscosity could be assumed. No abnormal behavior was noted at concentrations below 30 volume percent. At higher concentrations, suppression of turbulence was observed with critical Reynolds numbers rising to as high as 5,500 at 50 volume percent. No definite effect on the transition was noted due to variation of particle size or tube diameter. The type of surfactant used to stabilize the latex was found to have an important influence on the critical Reynolds number. INTRODUCTION For some polymer solutions and solid-in-liquid suspensions, the transition from laminar behavior to turbulence in pipeline flow has been reported to take place at unusually low1-5 and in some cases at higher than normal6,7 critical Reynolds numbers. Extreme values of critical Reynolds numbers (NRe*) have been found to range from 1 to 6,000, as opposed to the values of 2,000 to 3,500 which are obtained for ordinary liquids. Observations have also been reported of drag reduction in fully developed turbulent flow, i.e., a decreased value of the friction factor in the Reynolds number-friction factor plot6*10-14 in colloidal and polymeric fluids. In some cases, turbulence suppression (unusually large values of Nre*) was noted to occur preceding the drag reduction,6 while a normal transition was noted in other cases of drag reduction.14 To relate the occurrence of turbulence suppression and drag reduction to the molecular or particulate structure of the fluid, it is desirable to characterize the structural variables with some precision. For most colloidal dispersions and polymeric fluids, this is very difficult; particle sizes, shapes and stiffnesses may vary over wide ranges in the same sample. Recently, however, a colloidal fluid has become available which consists of rigid spherical particles of highly uniform diameter dispersed in a simple Newtonian liquid. These are monodisperse polymer latices, prepared by carefully controlled emulsion polymerization reactions. The purpose of this research was to study the transition to turbulence in these well-characterized colloidal fluids as a function of concentration, particle diameter and tube diameter. Typical flow curves of latices of high solids content are shown in Fig. 1. While these curves were obtained with monodisperse latices, the general shape of the curve is also typical of a polydisperse latex. It is observed that a shear-thinning region occurs for low to moderate rates of shear. At sufficiently high shearing rates a limiting Newtonian viscosity is reached. The viscosity µ diminishes with decreasing volume fraction 4 at all shear rates. DETERMINATIONS of circulating load in a classifier operating in closed circuit with a grinding mill are usually made from screen analyses of the mill feed and classifier products. The percentage remaining on someone selected screen size must be used in the calculation, and, because of the wide variation in average particle size between the mill feed and classifier overflow, an accurate and representative result at the selected mesh is often difficult to obtain. To overcome this difficulty and reduce the time required in making the determination, I have devised a method which uses the liquid-solid relationship in the circuit rather than screen analyses. The quantities required for the calculation include only the usual dilution and feed tonnage measurements, which should be made regularly in the course of ordinary mill operation and, in addition, the amount of new water added to the classifier, or to the head of the mill with the new feed. If measurements are obtained on both of these quantities it is possible to check the calculated circulating load, and to calculate the percentage of moisture in the new feed to the mill; or, if the latter is known, to check the feed tonnage.

THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd. : (1) The Sullivan Concentrator, Chapman Camp, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the St. Eugene Concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the Tadanac (Customs) Concentrator, Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three I plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Values in all ores treated are as minerals of some or all of the metals -lead, zinc, gold or silver. Occasional customs ores contain small amounts of copper. Sulfide iron content of ores treated varies from a [ ] low figure in some ores to 38 per cent. iron in Sullivan ore. Gangue minerals vary considerably. A few customs ores are somewhat oxidized and as a result present difficulties. Flotation equipment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sullivan Concentrator. In this paper I will not detail treatment nor equipment in any of our plants but will describe special features in, or in connection with, all of them. I will then deal with flotation reagents, describing our use of each of them, particularly where differing from general practice. I will conclude with comments on special subjects related to differential flotation.

In this way the effect of repair materials on the amount of slag tapped would be found with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Ten heats were made for this study with careful attention to a uniform charge. The steel was the usual grade B and melting was carried out in a 3 1/2-ton top-charge Lectromelt furnace. Melting practice in all cases was the same-complete oxidation, with recarbonization by means of low-silicon pig iron.

THE problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, en¬gineers, and operators matter for serious consideration.. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, clue largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained in the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more severe and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-clay as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is .stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a :step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes.

Before attempting any discussion of the importance of tariff enactments as applied to exhaustible resources, certain basic factors should be emphasized. First, it must be remembered that minerals differ from organic substances in that they are irreplaceable, and when once taken from the earth's crust enter into uses which ultimately dissipate them, so . that they cannot be recovered for future use. A second factor entering into the problem is the unequal distribution of the mineral deposits of the world. No industrial nation has within its political confines a sufficient quantity of all the minerals necessary for the maintenance and advancement of present civilization; hence international exchange of these commodities is inevitable. As minerals are essential to modern industry, the supply available to any given nation constitutes a factor which limits its ambition to advance industrially. A nation which has this ambition endeavors to secure not only a supply of minerals sufficient for its current needs, but also sources which will assure it expansion. Should mineral raw materials be withheld from such a nation by enactment, it seems inevitable that every effort will be made to obtain them, and that, should the nation deem itself sufficiently powerful, its ultimate recourse will be force. Thus the importance of tariff enactments, not only from the standpoint of industrial prosperity but from the standpoint of international peace, can be appreciated.
