MORE improvements have probably been made in the diamond-drill field in the past decade than were accomplished in the entire prior period since diamond drilling was discovered in 1864 by a French engineer named Leschot. True, machines were improved, and new accessories were adopted from time to time up to 1929, but no radical changes were made. The basic principle instituted during the early years of the industry were still in use in 1929. At that time, practically the only diamonds used were "black diamonds" or "carbon." These came from Brazil through a rather round- about route, and by the time they got to the drilling trade their cost was excessive-$175 per carat and even higher at the peak. Perhaps because of this. or perhaps because of increased competition, the industry sought ways to reduce expenses even in the face of constantly increased labor costs due to higher wages and reduction in hours worked. The solution seemed to rest in two things-use of a cheaper cutting medium to replace the carbon diamond and the development of new machines to drill faster and thus produce more hole per shift of operation.

The superconducting performmce of diffusion-processed Nb3Sn is influenced by its micro structure. High isotropic transverse current density may be achieved in this material by a process which forms a precipitate of ZrO, within the Nb3Sn. FOR an ideal type-I1 superconductor, little or no transport current can be carried in the mixed state; i.e., little or no transport current can be carried above the lower critical field H,,, where the field penetrates abruptly in the form of current vortices or fluxoids, even though full transition to the normal state does not occur until the upper critical field H,,.' Fortunately, nonideal type-I1 superconductors can be readily obtained and these carry large transport currents up to the upper critical field H. Both theoretical and experimental investigations have attributed this current-carrying capability for nonideal type-I1 superconductors to pinning of the fluxoid lattice by heterogeneities in the microstructure of the superconducting material. These heterogeneities may take the form of dislocations or dislocation clusters,2"5 grain boundaries: structural imperfections introduced by phase transformations; radiation damage,8"10 or precipitates.11"15 Nb3Sn formed by diffusion processing is a type-I1 superconductor. Heterogeneities are needed for high superconducting critical currents above H,,. This paper will cover: a) what the microstructure of diffusion-processed NbSn looks like; b) what changes in the microstructure take place when the system is doped with precipitates, and c) how these changes in microstructure influence the superconducting critical currents. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Samples. Diffusion processing was used to form the Nb3Sn. The procedure used was as follows: a) coat the surface of a niobium tape with tin; b) heat-treat this tape at a temperature above 930°C to form a layer of Nb3Sn at the Sn-Nb interface. Such a layer of NbsSn is shown in Fig. 1 The thickness of the NbsSn layer formed was controlled by the time and temperature of the heat treatment. The same general procedure was used for preparation of both undoped samples and samples doped with a precipitate. An additional step was included in the preparation of the doped samples which consisted of internal oxidation of zirconium to form ZrOn. The details of the doping process will be reported in a later paper. Sample Testing. The Nb3Sn tape samples were soldered to a copper or brass shunt. Current and voltage leads were then attached to the sample in the usual four-probe resistance measurement configuration. The sample was cooled to 42°K. In some cases it was cooled in the presence of a high magnetic field and in other cases with the field turned off. The results were the same for both cases. The samples were oriented in a configuration with field transverse to current but could be rotated such that the angle between the field vector and the wide side of the tape sample could be changed. Measurements up to 100 kG were done in a superconducting solenoid and measurements above 100 kG in a water-cooled copper magnet at the MIT National Magnet Laboratory. Once the test field was reached, the current in the sample was increased until voltage was detected across the sample. The critical current was taken as the current at which voltage was first detected in excess of background noise. In most cases this was 1 to 2 x 10~6 v for a— in.-wide sample carrying several hundred amperes with a in. separation between voltage leads and with a 10 "-ohm shunt resistance. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Microstructure. Examination of the microstructure of the undoped Nb3Sn shows rather large-diameter (1 to 2 columnar grains growing outward from the niobium surface toward the tin surface. As the layer is made thicker by longer diffusion times, these grains grow longer. Few new grains are started. Transmission electron microscopy shows little or no second-phase material within the bulk of the Nb3Sn layer. The microstructure of a diffusion-processed NbsSn layer changes quite drastically when the system is doped so as to form a precipitate within the NbsSn layer. Instead of large-diameter columnar grains of NbaSn forming, smaller-diameter (0.5 to 1 ) equiaxed grains of Nb3Sn decorated with the precipitate form. This paper presents methods of designing hydraulic fracture treatments in formations saturated with slightly compressible liquids. Howard and Fast describe the fluid-loss control resulting from the viscosity and compressibility effects of the reservoir fluid in terms of a fracturing fluid coefficient. However, for horizontal fractures, this coefficient is applicable to infinitely thick reservoirs. These methods of evaluating fluid loss from horizontal fractures during treatment differ from previous methods in that: (I) formation thickness is incorporated in the velocity function describing the rate of fluid loss to the formation; and (2) for a given thickness the relative position of the fracture to the horizontal boundaries of the reservoir or any interrnediate permeability barrier is incorporated in the design procedure. This theory is applied to several actual and hypothetical field cases. The results of these calculations demonstrate that the eflect of formation thickness on fluid loss from horizontal fractures may result in fractures several times larger than predicted by other methods. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing has been the dominating well-stimulation technique during the last decade. From the time it was commercially available, fracturing has had a very favorable success ratio compared to other stimulation methods. However, numerous wells that were successfully stimulated remained economic failures. Only in the last few years has the oil industry recognized the importance of designing treatments for each well which will yield the maximum profit. This implies that for a given set of treatment conditions the size and general physical characteristics of the fracture can be determined. One of the outstanding contributions in the field of fracture design was presented by Howard and Fast.' In their paper, three flow mechanisms that control fluid loss from the fracture to the formation are defined: (1) viscosity effects of the fracturing fluid, (2) viscosity and compressibility effects of the reservoir fluid, and (3) wall-building effects of a treated fracturing fluid. The rate of fluid loss to the formation adjacent to a fracture is shown to be a function of time. For each flow mechanism the velocity function v(t) is expressed as a constant or fracturing fluid coefficient divided by the square root of time. This form of v(t) can be used in the Carter equation, as developed in the Howard and Fasc paper, to estimate the areal extent of fractures. This equation may be written as In the following sections the effect of formation thickness on fluid loss from horizontal fractures is evaluated when the controlling flow mechanism is the viscosity and compressibility of the reservoir fluids. The major assumptions inherent in the Carter equation are brought out in subsequent mathematical developments. THE EFFECT OF RESERVOIR FLUIDS ON FRACTURE EXTENSION When a fracture treatment is performed using a fracturing fluid identical to the reservoir fluid, the only flow mechanism controlling fluid loss is the viscosity and compressibility effects of the reservoir fluids. In developing a fracturing fluid coefficient for this mechanism, Howard and Fast considered a segment of the formation bounded by a unit area on the fracture face and extending to infinity in the direction of leak-off as shown in Fig. 1(a). The direction of leak-off z is normal to the fracture face. The equation governing the linear isothermal flow of fluid into this segment is where a = Eq. 2 is a form of the diffusivity equation. It is derived from the equation of continuity, Darcy's law and Eq. 3

A system is described for the simultaneous deposition of epitaxial layers on as many as eight substrates. A high degree of uniformity of both physical and electrical characteristics is achieved in the films. Variation of film thicknesses is consistently less than ±10pct within a wafer and from wafer to wafer within a run with the variation typically on the order of 55 pct. Composition variation of GaAs1-x PX layers within a wafer and from wafer to wafer within a run is consistently less than 51 pct. Electrical evaluation of the films by several techniques indicates excellent doping uniformity within a wafer and from wafer to wafer within a run. Mobilities for lightly doped GaAs films at 300°K are consistently >6000 cm2 v-1 sec-1 and mobilities > 7000 cm2 v- 1 sec-1 are regularly attainable. Techniques for the preparation of material with carrier concentrations from 1 x 1015cm-3 to 1 x 1019 cm-3 n-type and 5 x 1016 to 5 x 1018 cm-3 p-type are discussed. METHODS for the preparation of 111-V compounds by vapor phase reactions have been extensively reported in the literature.1-6 Almost all of the apparatus described for these various methods are suitable for processing one or at the most a very limited number of wafers simultaneously. With the recent rapid advances in the use of vapor grown GaAs for microwave oscillators and GaAs1-xPx as visible light emitters the requirements for these materials are steadily increasing. In order to satisfy these requirements it is necessary to move from a laboratory scale apparatus to one which is capable of processing a large number of wafers simultaneously. Desirable features would be a high degree of uniformity among the wafers and good reproducibility from run to run. The apparatus to be described fulfills these requirements very well. DISCUSSION The various methods reported in the literature can be classified under three headings: 1) closed tube, 2) open tube, and 3) the close-spaced method. Of these three the open-tube method is the most amenable for scale-up to a manufacturing process. It is the most versatile and the various operating conditions can be more precisely controlled than with the other two methods. A number of chemical reactions may be used to achieve vapor-phase growth of 111-V compounds. Sev-era1 of the more generally used reactions are shown in Fig. 1. All of these reactions have the following points in common: 1) generation of a volatile group III(Ga) species by the reaction of the transport agent (halide or HC1) with either Ga or GaAs, 2) introduction of the Group V(As and/or PI component, 3) a method of adding dopant, if desired, and 4) a region in which deposition from the vapor will occur and form as a single crystal epitaxial film on the substrates. The laboratory scale reactors permit the hot re-actant gases to flow into the relatively cooler deposition zone and pass successively over the several substrates which are arrayed along the long axis of the tube parallel to the gas flow. With this arrangement the composition of the reactant stream is continually changing as solid material is deposited on each successive substrate. As a result of this changing gas composition the reaction driving force also changes from substrate to substrate and the degree of uniformity of layer thickness, doping level, and so forth, is poor. This effect can be partially overcome by imposing a controlled temperature gradient along the deposition region to compensate for change in gas composition. However, even when this is done variations in layer thickness on the order of 30 to 40 pct are common and as high as 50 pct are frequently experienced between adjacent wafers in the tube. To expand this arrangement to a large number of wafers would only increase the nonuniformity from the first to last wafer in the line. From the above discussion the two undesirable features of changing gas composition and temperature gradient become evident. A reactor system which eliminates or minimizes these undesirable features is one in which the apparatus is mounted vertically as shown schematically in Fig. 2. The vertical mounting permits the disposition of a number of substrates on a suitable support so that all wafers are at the same vertical height in the furnace and hence at essentially the same temperature. By using only a single row of wafers the reactant gas mixture passes over only one substrate in its path through the reactor. Thus the two undesirable features of changing gas composition and temperature gradient are minimized. An additional design feature which further minimizes temperature variations is rotation of the substrate holder. Rotation serves to integrate any radial temperature gradient existing around the resistance heated furnace. A photograph of a reactor assembly at the completion of a run is shown in Fig. 3. MATERIAL PREPARATION Apparatus. Although any of the several chemical systems shown in Fig. 1 are adaptable for use in this apparatus the one generally used is System 2, the hydride synthesis system. MINE power systems are quite different in many respects from those usually found in industrial plants. Wide areas are served, usually by a circuit which is connected continuously throughout the mine. In some mines one circuit may run for several miles. There are usually a small number of branch circuits involved considering the areas covered. In all mines circuits are sectionalized at approximately 2500 ft by means of switches. All, or at least most branch circuits, are sectionalized by manual switches. In some mines automatic sectionalizing gear is used to give automatic overload protection at various strategic points in the system. However at the present time this practice is by no means general. Circuit hazards in mine electric systems are much greater than those encountered in industrial installation. Falls of roof or coal form a prominent hazard which may break the wire and may cause ground faults or partial ground faults. Ordinarily electric cables in mines cannot be insulated, there- fore n fall can easily cause a short circuit. The humidity in most mines is greater than 95 pct and at many points the floor is wet and water may be dripping from the roof over insulators, increasing the difficulties at that point. All electrical circuits must be contained in the mine entries and space must also be provided for moving equipment and men. Consequently, because of the proximity of the power circuit to the locomotives and other moving equipment a considerable hazard is introduced. Mine haulage track is not always good so that wrecks are not unusual. A wreck frequently does consider- able damage to the power circuit. A ground fault frequently results in heavy arcing which may be sustained. If the damage to the circuit is mechanical it may mean that a trip of coal has wrecked and a great deal of coal dust could be thrown into the air as a result of the wreck. The arc resulting from the ground fault could ignite the coal dust and a mine explosion would result. A continued ground fault, even if high in resistance, also may ignite the coal which may be on the bottom of the entry and a mine fire may result. The fire hazard is one of the most serious hazards in any coal mine. Since the mine circuit is completely interconnected, any power interruption resulting from a fault seriously affects the whole operation. Unless the mine is completely sectionalized the whole mine will be shut down until the fault is located and the proper switches are opened to isolate the fault; even then large areas may still be without power if they are supplied by a single power circuit which may be opened in isolating the fault. Further, mine power is usually supplied from a relatively small number of substations and the fault may be on a stub feed circuit, in which case power cannot be restored until the fault has been cleared. Practice varies widely with respect to placement of substations. Usually they will be spaced from I to 2 miles in 500V operations, and at 1 mile intervals or less, in 250 V operation. Actual mining operations govern substation placements and no general rules can be followed.

Molten silicate salts, the important industrial byproducts termed "slags," are known to be electrolytic conductors at furnace temperatures. This property is due to their partial dissociation into ions with the ion kind and size being closely related to the slag composition. Ionic conductance, in liquids, is a function of the viscosity, which in turn is a function of the temperature. It could be anticipated, therefore, that a semi-log plot of conductivity vs. reciprocal absolute temperature might yield a straight line, in the case of molten silicates and salts. As liquids, the viscosity of these slags should follow the Shepard1 relationship: log viscosity = A/T + B Then, if the resistance of the molten slag is directly proportional to the viscosity: log Rs = A/T + B Resistance measurements of molten halide salts,2 and silicate salts34 by various investigators have, indeed, shown this straight line relationship between resistance and temperature. A further relationship between the conductivity versus the degree of ioni-zation, the size of the ions, and the slag composition is, also, to be expected. Large ions, and fewer ions, would move more slowly in a potential field and could not carry as much current as smaller, more numerous, and mobile, ions. Conductivity, therefore, would be smaller in the presence of such large ions and higher slag viscosities. The conductivity-composition relationship is of considerable interest in the case of the industrial slags produced in iron blast furnaces, and non-ferrous smelting furnaces. These slags usually approximate three component systems with several minor components as impurities. At least one of the major components is commonly purchased for the sole purpose of rendering the slag less viscous at a reasonable furnace temperature. Should the conductivity be related rather directly to the concentration of such a purchased slag component (that is, CaO) instrumental measurement and control at the furnace might be possible. Modern tele-metric control methods in aqueous chemical process industries are often based on the property of conductivity of solutions, and its variation with composition. Investigators3 of the phenomenon of electrical conductivity in molten blast furnace slags have established that these systems show lines of equal conductivity on their ternary diagrams at one temperature level. These isocon-ductivity lines form closed contours on the diagrams, and at times, minimum areas occur at which these contours are essentially closed down to a point. The conductivity reading at such a point, at one temperature , would, of course, locate one on the diagram, and give the slag composition. Research in this field is understandably scanty. The area on which oil and gas development is reported covers 30 counties, which are included in the Texas Railroad Commission's District No. I. This area not only includes the old established Balcones fault-line group of producing fields but also includes the southwest extension of this trend and some of the deeper Wilcox (Eocene) exploratory development. (Fig. J.) In the old Balcones fault-line zone, three new fields were discovered during 1941. These fields are comparatively small, producing from Dale limestone or Austin chalk. No new fields were discovered during the year in the Edwards (Lower Cretaceous) limestone horizon. One new shallow field was discovered in the Reklaw (Eocene) sand horizon and, in the southwestern part of the district, one oil field and one gas field were discovered in the Navarro (Upper Cretaceous) sand horizon. An extremely important extension was made to the one producing Wilcox (Eocene) field of the district in the Washburn Ranch field of La Salle County. The district produced 6,650,357 bbl. during 1941, which was a 12 per cent decrease under production for 1940. Approximately 4,954,000 bbl. of this total production was produced by the three Edwards limestone fields, Luling, Salt Flat and Darst Creek, the remaining production coming from the other 43 active fields in the district. In all, 3694 wells were producing at the end of 1941, compared with 3559 wells at the end of the previous year. During the year, 139 new producing wells were completed and 29 wells were abandoned in the producing fields. The increase in producing wells represents an increase in new wells over abandonments in these fields, together with a decrease in wells temporarily shut down as of the end of 1941. The majority of production drilling was carried on in the following fields; Bee Creek, Chicon Lake, Elm Creek, Gas Ridge, Pearsall and Tenney Creek. Approximately 250 wells were drilled during 1941, of which 110 were exploratory wells completed as failures throughout the district. Considerable exploratory work was continued during 1941 along the Wilcox trend. Geophysical work employing various types of geophysical methods and leasing activity was continued along this trend, particularly by the major companies. The significance of this activity is apparent from the successful extension and development in the Washburn field of La Salle County, where several well-developed gas-and-oil producing horizons have been developed in the lower Wilcox section between 5100 and 5600 ft. as noted in the following paragraphs. Continued exploratory activity along this general trend as far as present conditions will permit is predicted for 1942. New Fields Elgin Field, Bastrop County.—No. I-A Hiram Walker, Marts and Beaven, Inc., discovery well of the Elgin field, was com pleted on Apr. 22, 1941, in broken Austin chalk from 2820 to 2840 ft., pumping 105 bbl. per day, 36.8°A.P.I. gravity. MANY direct processes have been proposed for the treatment of oxidized ores of copper by reducing the copper oxide to the metallic state, and by separating it from its impurities by a subsequent fusion. The radical objection common to all the methods which have come to my notice, except those in which sulphur plays the prominent part, is that the very deoxidizing agent which effects the reduction of the copper oxide, inevitably reduces at the same time a very considerable part, if not the whole, of the iron which almost invariably accompanies copper in its ores. The result is that, when the ore is subsequently fused, a very great quantity of the already reduced iron separates from the slag along with the copper, alloying with it, and necessitating costly subsequent operations for its separation. Thus, at Perm, in the Urals,* the product of the fusion of ferruginous copper oxides is a mixture of one hundred and fifty-five parts of highly cupriferous pig iron with two hundred and five parts of very impure and ferruginous black copper, containing some 10 per cent. of carbon and iron, though free from sulphur, and of course very difficult to refine. If, in order to avoid this reduction of iron to the metallic state, the reducing action be made feebler, it inevitably results that a considerable part of the copper as well escapes deoxidation ; and, consequently, the slags are so rich that it becomes necessary to treat them subsequently in order to recover the copper which they contain. Thus, in treating native copper, at Lake Superior, where the reducing action is purposely made feeble in order to prevent the deoxidation of the iron, the slags from the first fusion of the ore carry so much copper as to render it imperative to treat them again, which is done in a cupola. And yet, in spite of so far weakening the reducing action as to cause a notable slagging of the copper, a very considerable reduction of iron actually takes place. These are the two dangers which threaten the smelter of oxidized copper ores. The Ti-Be system up lo 10 wt pct Be with cortlmercialll' pure titanium has been determined using metal-lographic techniques. Beryllium forms the p eutec-toid type of dinqarz with titanium; the eutectoid occurs at 0.5 xt pct Be azd 1500 F, while an eutectic is foritled at 1887°F containing between 5 and 7.5 rt pct Be. The solubility of beryllium in a titanium does not exceed 0.05 zvt pct and the maximum solubility of Beryllim in 0 titanium is 1 wt pet. PREVIOUS work on the Ti-Be phase diagram indicated that additions of beryllium to titanium resulted in a marked lowering of the melting point,''' and it was also observed that the solubility of beryllium in both a and p titanium was retricted.- With the limited data available, McQuillan and McQuillan constructed a partial hypothetical diagram of the Ti-Be system,= assuming that beryllium formed the 0 eutectoid type of system with titanium. Subsequently Bedford published a tentative diagram of the entire Ti-Be system: although he did not investigate alloys containing less than 10 wt pct Be. This diagram included several compounds described by other authorities.'-l3 The following account describes work directed toward determining the form of the titanium-rich portion of the phase diagram up to 10 wt pct Be. MATERIALS AND METHODS Titanium sponge and a master alloy containing 25 wt pct Be were used in the formulation of the alloys; the chemistry of these materials is detailed in Table I. The alloys were prepared as 250-g compacts which were melted into buttons by arc melting under purified argon on a water-cooled copper hearth. Results of analyses for beryllium are shown in Table I but no determination of other elements was made at this stage. The alloys were hot-rolled at 1650°F to produce 0.1-in.-thick sheet. Alloys containing up to 1.5 pct Be were fabricated without trouble; samples containing 2 pct cracked initially upon hot rolling, but thereafter rolled satisfactorily to sheet. The 5, 7.5, and 10 pct were hot short and could not be rolled. Surface contamination was removed from samples by sandblasting and pickling in a 5 pct HF-35 pct HNOs solution. For metal log raphic examination, heat-treated specimens were mounted transverse to the rolling direction, ground on silicon carbide papers of increasing fineness to 600 grit, and electropolished at 20 v using a solution containing 600 ml of methanol, 60 ml of perchloric acid, 360 ml of butyl cellosolve, and 2 ml of Solvent "X". "The power development at these falls, three miles below the city of Great Falls, was made in 1891 by the original Great Falls Water Power & Townsite Company, and the Boston & Montana Consolidated Copper & Silver Mining company, the predecessor of the Boston & Montana Reduction Department mentioned above.The dam is 746 feet long, placed a short distance above the crest of the falls, and giving an effective head, as now constructed, of from 42 to 44 feet. There are power houses on both banks, those on the south bank belong to the Great Falls Power company, the successor of the Great Falls \!\Tater Power & Townsite Company, and the Great Falls Electric properties. The water is led from the dam to these power houses through sheet iron pen-stocks the water wheels are of the horizontal turbine type, and of various sizes.The water is here carried from the dam to the power houses by an open canal or headrace, the walls of which are concrete. This headrace is 100 feet wide at the widest point. The available head was originally less than 40 feet, but this was increased to about 44 feet by means of flashboards and tailrace wall, seperating the tailrace from the main river and delivering the water to the river at a considerable distance below the power house, thus taking advantage of a considerable fall in the river below the sheer fall at Black Eagle.A total of about 12,000 horse power 1s developed at these falls, the Great Falls Power Company, and Great Falls Electric properties developing about 2,000 horse power, and the Anaconda Copper Mining Company developing the balance."

GEOLOGISTS have been quick to adopt new methods in locating new oil fields and in finding the extensions, laterally or at depth, of the old fields. For most of these new methods he is indebted to the physicist, the engineer, and the chemist, although he has also drawn from such ordinarily unrelated sciences as bacteriology and protozoölogy. These last-named sciences have been of help in problems dealing with the origin of petroleum and, although not of direct application to oil finding, have furnished evidence of value in learning what oil is made from and what are the natural agencies involved in its formation.
