SOME nonmetallic minerals and their products, such as portland cement, common brick and hollow tile, sand, gravel, crushed rock, vitrified salt-glaze clay pipe, and the like, are a necessity in every community. They are mineral in nature but the establishment of plants for their production is usually a local and elementary problem. Yet it is probable that an economic study of the problem in every locality will show that such nonmetallic mineral commodities are not always obtained in the most economical way, or in the best quality. Other nonmetallic minerals are of such value that they may be shipped for long distances and sold in sufficient quantities to establish prosperous commercial ventures. Among these are phosphates, barium compounds, borates, nitrogen compounds, magnesium compounds, sulfur, asbestos, and potash. Success in marketing such products depends on quality, production cost, transportation, and similar conditions.

The Industrial Board of the Department of Commerce has been formed under the chairmanship of George N. Peek, formerly vice-chairman of the War Industries Board. This Board is to put into practical effect a program for the readjustment of prices for basic materials in such a fashion as to create a firm foundation on which the consumer can base his future purchases, and the producer can form necessary estimates. It has the assistance of the Council of National Defense. One of the first steps off the Board was to call into conference the leaders of industry. At these conferences the general conditions of the country are carefully considered and an effort made to determine and understand the principles that should be applied to permit the successful solution of the problem. It will be the endeavor of the Board to act promptly by consulting and interchanging views with these representatives of industry in the fullest and freest manner possible with a view to aiding and assisting industry in general to resume activities to the fullest practicable extent.

Prior to assessing potential for in-situ leaching, it is advantageous to identify the nature of the probable reactants in the ore horizon, including both the uranium species and those in the gangue material. We report mineralogical data on an areally-broad suite of samples from the Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation in the Crownpoint area of the Grants Mineral Belt. Optical microscope, electron micro-probe, X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and wet chemical analyses were conducted. In these samples, the uranium occurs predominantly as either coffinite or uraninite. The host rock is arkosic sandstone, comprised mainly of detrital quartz and feldspar. The minerals kaolinite and chlorite are present in claystone clasts and calcite occurs as a cement. Major trace elements include molybdenum, vanadium, iron, selenium and sulfur. Carbonaceous organic material is present in the ore and is intimately associated with the uranium mineral when it is coffinite. Geochemical, pyrolytic and 13C NMR analyses indicate organic material is probably a very mature, coaly-type kerogen derived from plant components.

There are those in the Colstrip, Mont., area who can still remember the opening of the Rosebud mine in 1923. For 35 years it was a steady employer of 80 or 90 residents who produced coal for the railroad. In 1958, though, mining ceased as diesel locomotives supplanted steam engines. The mine was purchased in 1959 by Montana Power, the parent of Western Energy Co., and production resumed in 1968. Long Construction Co. was chosen as operator of the mine equipment. At that time, reserves appeared virtually unlimited. The thick Rosebud seam coursed through alternate sections of railroad holdings and federal land-then came the federal moratorium on coal leasing in 1971. About the time Western Energy completed the special leasing procedure to extend reserves from an existing mine, a new federal monkey wrench was thrown into the works with passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977.

The electric utility industry is the largest customer of the U.S. coal industry, consuming nearly 50% of present coal production. By 1980, the electric utilities are expected to burn over 500 million tpy of coal or 75% of total coal production. When coal is burned in electric utility plants, ash is produced in one of several forms. These include fly ash, bottom ash and bottom slag. At the present time, approximately 20 million tons of these ashes are produced and must be disposed of by the utilities at a cost of 50[c] to $2 per ton. In 15 years, more than double this quantity will be produced. Only a small quantity of this ash is put to any practical use. Much remains to be done about expanding uses for fly ash and bottom slag.

The basal stress-strain behavior, dislocation density, and strain vale sensitivity of the flow stress uqere measured at room temperature on single crystals oj-zone-refined zinc , 99.999 pct Zn, and zinc containing 0.0025 and 0.02 wt pct Al. No significant change in the stvain rate sensitivity of the flow stress occurs with the addition of aluminum. Changes in dislocation substructure and nonbasal dislocation density were obserrled with the addition of aluminum. The effect of aluminum on the basal slress-strain behavior is explained in terms of changes in nonbasal dislocation density which determines the separation distance of junctions between basal and nonbasal dislocations. The onset of basal slip is associated with the breaking of attractive junctions. The chunge in basal dislocation density was found to be proportional to the one-third power of the plastic shear strain, indepedent of purity. THE effect of impurities in solid solution on the stress-strain behavior of single crystals has been the subject of many theoretical studies. These studies have generally concentrated on the interactions between impurities and dislocations to explain the hardening effeet of impurity additions. The theories that have been proposed include those of yott and Nabarro,&apos;l&apos; Cott-re11; Suzuki; and Fisher. In practice, it is generally difficult to predict the relative importance of the vari- ous effects due to impurities. In addition, secondary effects of impurity additions such as induced changes in dislocation density and substructure in the as-grown crystals have received little attention. Many experimental investigations have been conducted on the effect of impurities on the stress-strain behavior of fcc crystals. Hcp crystals have not received much attention except for the extensive work of Levine et a1.= on magnesium alloy crystals. Stuwe~&apos;&apos; has studied the effect of copper impurity on the critical shear stress of zinc crystals and has interpreted the results in terms of the impurity atmosphere model of Cottrell and Jaswon. This report presents the results of an experimental study of the effect of aluminum additions to zinc on the basal stress-strain curve and the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress. Etch pit techniques were used to measure and characterize the dislocation density and substructure in the zinc alloy crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation. Compression test specimens of four different purities of zinc were prepared from CP grade zinc of 99.999 pct purity obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. An analysis of this material furnished by the supplier indicated the following impurities in wt ~ct: Pb = 0.0002; Fe = 0.0002; Cd = 0.00005; other <0.60011. A quantity of material of this grade was further purified by zone refining. Zone refining was carried out under a helium atmosphere by passing a double &apos;One furnace Over a 6-ft-10ng charge at the rate of 2 in. The influence of the stress dependence of the dislocation density on the overall stress dependence of The steady-state creep rate is discussed. Experimental measurements of dislocation densities and creep rates jor an Fe-3.1 pct Si alloy tested over a wide range of stress are presented which indicate a close correlation between the two quantities. EXPRESSING the stress dependence of high-temperature steady-state creep rates has been the subject of numerous investigations over the past decade. From these investigations have emerged a few general equations which fit most of the available data reasonably well. Garofalo 1 has proposed that for a wide range of stress and temperature the creep rate, i, can be expressed by a relationship of the form: where A, ß, and n are temperature-dependent and is the applied stress. Eq. [I] gives a stress dependence of a at low stresses and exp(nßo) at high stresses, both consistent with experimental observation where n = 5. A number of other investigatorshave proposed a similar expression where: where m and w are in general functions of temperature. Theoretical justification for Eqs. 111 and [2J comes from two different approaches, theories based on dislocation glide3-5 and theories based on the balance between work-hardening and recovery.&apos; Dislocation glide theories predict where p is the mobile dislocation density and V is the activation volume. In order for Eq. [3] to predict a on stress dependence at low stresses with n = 5, it is necessary for p to be a strong function of stress, about proportional to u3 or u4.436 Recovery models of creep start with the general expression:&apos; where r is the recovery rate and h is the work-hardening rate, and then employ a detailed model to determine the stress dependencies of r and h. As example, weertman2 has described a model based on pile-up hardening which results in an expression similar to Eq. [2] with m = 2 and p = 2.5. A recent, seemingly more general approach suggested by McLean is to use Friedels dislocation network growth expression to calculate the stress dependence of r. This model predicts r = p 3,2 and, as h is taken to be a relatively weak function of stress, the stress dependence of i should be about proportional to p3, 2. Once again, it is required that p be a strong function of stress to yield i This recovery model is by no means complete as the stress dependence of network growth is calculated in the absence of an applied stress meaning that r should probably be a stronger function of stress than given by p3, 2 and also some recent work by Mitra and McLean8 suggests that the stress dependence of h may be as large as Because of the importance of the stress dependence of p in determining the overall stress dependence of the strain rate it seems reasonable to examine this relationship in some detail. UNDER existing economic conditions, the treatment of gold ores occupies an outstanding position in metallurgical activity. The increased price of gold has automatically brought about a reclassification of old dumps and low-grade orebodies, and many that formerly were considered valueless are now being vigorously investigated and worked. This situation has developed problems that have taxed the ingenuity and ability of metallurgists to the utmost. Some gold ores give a high extraction of gold by standardized methods of treatment; other ores of apparently similar character yield but a relatively small percentage of their gold when treated by the same processes.
