One important means of reducing steel consumption in grinding mills is not mentioned in S.G. Malghan's paper. It is simply to reduce the oxygen content in the mill and pulp. While oxygen dissolved in pulp is not readily reduced without additives, reduced aeration and reduced ventilation of grinding mills are often feasible. It is not necessary to completely eliminate the oxygen to achieve substantial benefits, since corrosion rates vary with oxygen content in a manner analogous to combustion rates as oxygen content increases. It is difficult to generate indisputable quantitative data on the relationship of oxygen reduction in a milling system to changes in consumption of grinding steel. Perhaps this accounts for the absence of technical papers on the effects of reducing oxygen content in grinding mills by reducing aeration of pulp and ventilation of grinding mills. One qualitative observation is that mills operating at a lower percent of critical speed will tend to have lower media consumption for similar fineness of grind without necessarily having an equivalent reduction in power consumption per ton of product. Reduced mill speed would also tend to reduce both ventilation of the mill and entrainment of air in the pulp. Larger grinding mills tend to be more media efficient because they operate at a greater ratio of charge volume to pulp surface area, which will tend to reduce the aeration per unit of pulp volume. The mechanical steps required to reduce aeration of grinding mill pulps depend on the configuration of the grinding circuit and related process. Reply by S.G. Malghan Mr. Locher stated that my paper did not mention the reduction of oxygen content of the pulp as a potential method of decreasing the steel consumption. I would like to bring to the attention of Mr. Locher that an indirect reference was made to the fact that pulp oxidation potential controls the corrosion wear of steel. Though dissolved oxygen is one of the factors that controls oxidation potential, additional discussion was deliberately avoided for the reasons mentioned by Mr. Locher. The most important reason being the difficulty of decreasing and controlling the oxygen concentration of the pulp in a commercial mill.

WHAT DOES "MAGNETIC" MEAN? The word magnetic has several meanings. When used, as it usually is, without qualification one is often unable to tell which meaning is intended. 1. A body is magnetic which has power to attract iron magnetically. Such is a lodestone or magnet, either permanent or not. This is an active sense or meaning in that the body itself does the attracting or is .magnetic. 2. A body is magnetic which may be made to attract iron magnetically, as the iron core of an electro-magnet when not magnetized by the current. This is a potentially active meaning, the body being capable of becoming a magnet. 3. A body is magnetic which has the property of being. attracted by a magnet magnetically. Such are iron, cobalt, nickel, magnetic oxide of iron, magnetic alloys, etc. This is a passive meaning, the attracting being done by the actively magnetic body. With these three meanings to choose from, one must usually make a guess based on previous knowledge as to which is the right one. Would it

In the course of a study concerned with the rnechanical behavior of the intermetallic compound CO3V, both structural observations and anomalous electrical-resistivity behavior indicated the presence of a new high-temperature phase in an alloy with the stoichiometric composition, Co-22.4 wt pet V. The evidence, which is given below, suggests that the new phase is situated between the low-temperature ordered hexagonal phase, k,1, 2and the high-temperature disordered fee solid solution, a,3 within a small range of temperature in the vicinity of 1070°C. Structural studies included X-ray diffraction analysis* and electron-transmission microscopy examination* of stoichiometric composition speci- mens homogenized for 1 hr at 1200oC and either air-cooled or water-quenched. The air-cooled specimens yielded X-ray diffraction evidence of the k phase, while electron microscopy revealed a microstructure of both heavily and moderately faulted regions as shown in Fig. 1. The high density of stacking faults (or fine twins) in region A is reminiscent of hexagonal cobalt following its allotropic transformation.4 Selected-area diffraction from this region revealed distinct superlattice reflections of the ordered hexagonal phase, as well as continuous rel-streaks which were normal to the fault planes in the micrograph. The latter is indicative of extremely small spacings between the faults.' Regions such as ß were found to be only partially transformed to the k phase. Attempts to study the antiphase domain structure by either bright- or dark-field techniques were unsuccessful in these initial studies. This was due to the low intensity of the superlattice reflections arising from the closeness of the cobalt and vanadium scattering factors. Quenching Co3V from above Tc appears to suppress the formation of the k phase. Both X-ray and electron-diffraction results indicated that the disordered phase, a, was partially ordered during severe cooling and that the structure of the ordered phase was of the L12 (Cu3Au) type,6 designated here as a'. As in the case of the hexagonal phase, examination of the domain structure was unsuccessful; however, significant information concerning the morphology of this condition was revealed by the appearance of dislocation arrays. SPANIARDS were probably the first to mine the rich surface ore in the veins cutting the rhyolite capping that outcrops on the hills of La Mazata, oil the Allyones side of the Magdalena valley in Jalisco, Mexico, although the name comes from a word of Indian origin meaning "deer". The camp is about 12 km. west of Magdalena, a town on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and about 17 km. north of Etzatlán, on the Mexican National Railroad, at an elevation of 4500 ft. The climate is subtropical with no extremes of heat or cold, the rainy season beginning in June and ending in October.

Computer analyses of the trafficability of copper mine tailings by four different commercially available BWEs were performed. A mathematical model incorporating the tailings' Coulomb strength parameters and the vehicles' geometry and operational characteristics was used to study the vehicle terrain interaction. The computer output provides the maximum tractive force (net drawbar pull) that each BWE can develop for given tailings conditions without bnngzng about a state of plastic failure in the tailings. Estimates of sinkage are also provided. The theoretical results for the BWEs and tailings studied compare favorably with the operating experience of similar BWEs used for remining gold tailings in South Africa. This lends some confidence to the validity of the mathematical model. The results of such analyses may be wed to evaluate, on a relative basis, which of a number of different machines would perform better than others under given conditions of a tailings deposit.

The southeastern coast of China, from Ning-Po to .Macao, represents an element in the continental mass of Asia which has at practically all times in the remote past exhibited a tendency to rise rather than to subside.' This strip of land, 1,000 or more miles long by perhaps 150 miles wide at its widest part, has in fact stood above sea level since at least early Cambrian times, while the great basins to the north and west were receiving their massive accumulations of Sinian (Cambro-Ordovician), Carboniferous, and later deposits. We find, .therefore, a coastal fringe of metamorphic and igneous rocks bordering the huge expanses of sedimentary rocks which occupy the interior. Hong-Kong is situated toward the southwestern extremity of this fringe. Hong-Kong is an island of approximately 30 sq. miles, on the north shore of which is situated the city of Victoria, with its 325,000 inhabitants. This island was ceded to Great Britain in 1842. In 1560 the peninsula of Kowloon (about 5 sq. miles), being that part of the mainland lying directly across from the city of Victoria, was added to Hong Kong. Thirty-eight years later, in 1898, a stretch of territory, including the mainland behind Kowloon and. numerous adjacent islands, was leased to Great Britain for 99 years. This last addition is known as the "New Territory of Hong-Kong" and comprises 376 sq. miles in area. A map of Hong-Kong, Kowloon, and the "New Territory" is shown in Fig. 1. My studies of this total area of over 400 sq. miles were devoted primarily to an investigation of the mineral resources. Systematic mapping of the immensely complex exposures of rocks was not possible in the time at my disposal. However, observations in, this. direction warrant a few generalizations.

OF all the metals in the war program the demand for and the production of magnesium have increased percentagewise the most. In the prewar year 1939 the production was 3350 tons. The war program, twice expanded, now provides for nearly one hundred times that amount annually. The goal announced by the War Production Board in February 1942 was 362,500 tons per year. Be- cause of the development during the year of satisfactory types of incendiary bombs other than magnesium this objective has been somewhat reduced but the capacity of the plants already built or under construction will be huge. The Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the W.P.B. has had the responsibility of planning and implementing this expansion and of providing fabricating facilities as well for this greatly increased tonnage of magnesium ingot.

Cemented tungsten carbide, a product of a branch of metallurgy which has never possessed more than a relatively minor interest and importance, has recently commanded the attention of engineers, industrialists, financiers and men of business. New methods, new opportunities, new goals, never before considered, have suddenly been brought within the scope of practical realization. It is these results that attract the interest of the world, but we, as engineers and metallurgists, will have equal interest in the product itself and in that branch of metallurgy from which it comes. It seems appropriate, therefore, to speak today on Hard Metal Carbides and Cemented Tungsten Carbide, as the latter represents one of the outstanding developments of recent date in non-ferrous metallurgy. We are interested in the hard metal carbides as a group of related metallic substances and in cemented tungsten carbide as the leading representative of the metallurgy of this group. The literature of this general field is limited, and, bearing this in mind, it seems advisable to attempt to cover the field broadly and to correlate the subject matter, rather than to present a detailed account of any one of its phases. Our annual lecture lends itself admirably to this plan. The quickened interest in cemented tungsten carbide, once its potentialities were recognized, the many sides to the problem of developing the manufacture and use of this new product, and the desire to economize as much as possible in the time of development, have brought many into this work, both in this country and abroad, notably the Osram Lamp Co. and Friedrich Krupp in Germany and the General Electric Co. in this country. It would be presuming too much to attempt to speak too broadly of the present state of the art and science of the hard metal carbides and my remarks arc guided largely by the work done in the General Electric Co., and by our associates in the Carboloy Co. Even here the activities of many in these two groups have centered around the utilization of cemented tungsten carbide, which is outside the scope of this talk. In the preparation of this series of books it was considered particularly appropriate to include this work. Gunther was one of the younger men who was associated with Colonel Mudd in the finding and development of ore deposits. Supported by Mudd, Gunther undertook a systematic survey of the sources of copper of ancient Europe. This survey resulted in the rediscovery of the deposits now worked by the Cyprus Mines Corporation for which Gunther was, until shortly before his death, the resident manager. In finding and developing these mines, Gunther applied the methods and data embodied in this book and proved their usefulness. It is believed that other young engineers may profit similarly. In presenting a new edition, the form and substance of this work have been preserved and no changes have been made in any direct statement of the original author. Individual illustrations, paragraphs and mine descriptions appearing in the first edition have been omitted in order to permit introduction of new material. The latter has been chosen so as to present a somewhat more balanced picture of the mining industry as it now exists. The new material relates largely to the so-called porphyry coppers, to mines in Canada, Rhodesia, Alaska, and a number in the United States that have become important since the book was first written. The new material was prepared by Mr. Russell C. Fleming, using the best that had been published and items of which he had personal knowledge or had obtained by correspondence with men familiar with the deposit described. PRioR to the year 1902 electricity was used in the Butte district only for lighting, for the tramming of ores on the surface, and for the electrolytic refining of copper. In that year the Canyon Ferry hydro-electric plant on the Missouri river, with a transmission line to Butte and Anaconda, was completed, and enabled the mining operators to purchase electric current in large quantities at reasonable rates, and its application and use in the various mining operations and reduction works proceeded rapidly. The principal applications of electric current in metal mining may be listed as follows: Compressing air for hoisting. Compreeaing air for rock drills and pneumatic tools. Pumping. Ventilating. Lighting. Tramming. Compressing air for blast furnaces and converters Running shop and miscellaneous motors. Compressed Air for Hoisting. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. operates 22 mine shafts and plants at Butte. Of these, 15 are large plants and hoists, through which most of its ores are hoisted. In 1912 this company commenced using compressed air in place of steam, in operating a number of its large hoists, and at this date has 10 main hoisting engines and 10 auxiliary hoists driven by compressed air. The compressed air is furnished from a central plant containing six compressors, each having a capacity of 7,500 cu. ft. of free air per minute compressed to 90 lb. pressure in large receivers, and conducted by suitable pipe lines to the various hoists, the air being reheated before passing to the engines. Each of these compressors is driven by a 1,200-h.p. synchronous motor, directly attached to the drive shaft, and takes electric current at 2,200 volts. THE Cartersville mining district, 35 miles northwest of Atlanta, Ga., has been of varying but continuous importance in the southern mineral industry during the past century. Noted chiefly for its production of brown iron ore, manganese oxide ores, barite, sienna, and magnesian limestone, the district and its environs have produced brick and tile clays, slate, gold, bauxite, and graphitic schist. Minor deposits of serpentine, sericite schist, copper ore, and red iron oxide have been prospected. The obvious deposits of brown iron ore, together with some associated specular hematite, were mined out years ago, although a little ore was left in the workings. Moderately steady production of sienna reached a peak about 1930, then declined rapidly. Manganese mining passed through a relatively active period from the World War to 1931, but has subsided to a small but rather constant output for the Birmingham market. However, the White Manganese Corporation has prepared for possible increased production by constructing a new washer capable of handling about 300 tons of ore per day. Principal activity in the district proper has centered for some years in the production of barite and magnesian limestone. GENERAL GEOLOGY Geologic relations of the ore deposits of this district are more or less similar to those of many Appalachian districts. The lowermost Cambrian formation, heretofore called Weisner1 in this region, supposedly partly or wholly equivalent to the Erwin and Hesse quartzites as recognized to the northeast, is overlain conformably by the Shady [+] formation, also of Lower Cambrian age. In the Cartersville district, the sedimentary rocks of these formations were folded with increasing intensity eastward, and were recrystallized.

The loss in toughness caused by phosphorus within commercial ranges was studied in AISI-SAE 1340 steel and in molybdenum modifications of this grade. The replacement of part of the manganese by molybdenum in amounts which maintain the hardenability of the standard 1340 grade was shown to counteract to a marked degree the detrimental effects of phosphorus. THIS paper deals with the effect of phosphorus on the toughness of 1340 steel and with the effect on toughness of replacing part of the manganese by molybdenum while retaining the same hardenability as that of 1340. In previous work1 a progressive decrease in toughness was observed when the phosphorus content of 5140 was raised from 0.020 to 0.036 pct; that is, from a moderate phosphorus level to one higher but yet within the AISI-SAE specification for this grade. The structural condition of the steel was tempered martensite. Toughness was evaluated by the transition temperature determined by V-notch Charpy tests. Replacement of a part of the chromium in 5140 by molybdenum provided a factor of safety against loss of toughness caused by phosphorus, especially where the steel was cooled slowly after tempering. Scope of the Study: In view of the improved tolerance for phosphorus obtained by replacing a part of the chromium in 5140 with molybdenum, it seemed desirable to investigate the possibility of obtaining similar improvement in 1340 by replacing part of the manganese with molybdenum. Heats were made at different phosphorus levels, in a series that began with 1340 and ended with steels containing 0.32 to 0.35 pct Mo with 0.82 and 0.90 pct Mn. The analyses of the heats are given in table I. In order to facilitate later discussion, the 1340 heats have been placed together in the order of increasing phosphorus content, and the molybdenum modifications have been grouped according to phosphorus

THE knowledge of the existence of petroleum in Southern California dates back to the days of the missions. The presence of asphaltum and semisolid bitumen was reported at Santa Barbara in 1792, but no serious attempt was made to develop oil until Professor Silliman's optimistic report in 1865 started California's first oil boom. Wells were drilled in many counties of the State, but the equipment was unsuitable and the drilling difficult and no production was obtained except in Ventura County. Even there the production was of little importance commercially, and not until the early '80s did it become sufficient to again attract attention. In 1888 the production for the State had reached a total of about 700,000 bbl. per year, practically all light oil produced in Ventura County, Pico Canyon, Los Angeles County and in the Puente Hills. The production of petroleum attained the dignity of an industry in 1895 when the Los Angeles City and Coalinga fields were discovered. The subsequent development has been remarkable, and in 20 years the production has increased from 1,000,000 to 100,000,000 bbl. per year. The refining industry has kept pace with the production of oil. The Pacific Coast Oil Co., the predecessor of the Standard Oil Co. of California, was the virtual pioneer refining company of the State, having built a refinery at Alameda about 1880. When purchased by the Standard, about 1902, it was dismantled and the refinery at Point Richmond was built. The Richmond refinery is now one of the largest in the world, having a capacity in excess of 60,000 bbl. per day. A small refinery was built by the Union Oil Co. at Santa Paula in the early days of the industry and later many asphalt refineries were in operation in Southern California. The Pacific Coast Oil Co. was then, as has been its successor, the Standard Oil Co. of California, the principal refiner and marketer of light products, the most valuable of which was kerosene.

The new OSM regulations for ground water monitoring of underground coal mines have been the source of many concerns for the mining industry. Because the regulations were initially written at the federal level, but are being administered at the state level, considerable confusion still exists within the industry as to what is really required. Based on submission and/or approval of more than 30 monitoring plans for existing mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, three basic sections are necessary. They are: 1. background data on the hydrogeologic setting of the mine, 2. the monitoring plan itself, and 3. mining procedures to minimize adverse effects on ground water. Like all of the OSM requirements, ground water monitoring will be a new burden the coal industry must bear, but with proper planning and communication with the regulatory authorities it need not be as bad as originally feared.

NOT much serious consideration was liven to the military aspects of raw materials before World War 1. Following the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914, however. this situation was promptly changed. Disruption of allied shipping and German submarine warfare soon cut off a substantial part of the material the United Staten was accustomed to receiving from overseas. At the same time, raw material requirements rose rapidly as the tempo of industrial preparedness was stepped up in anticipation of war. By April 1917, when we entered the war, serious shortages threatened and consideralde attention was being given to our "deficcient" raw materials. The term "war mineral," began to appear after we became active combatants. But there is no evidence that "strategics" and "critical." as now used, had entered the lexicon of our raw materials experts during the last war nor were there apparently any officially recog¬nized list or definitions of what con¬stituted war materials. According to G. A. Roush in his book, `'Strategic Mineral Supplies," C. K. Leith, while serving as mineral advisor to the War Industries Board. compiled the first unofficial list of deficient minerals in 1917.

10.1-1. Relative Position of Maintenance as Compared to the Overall Mining Costs. The basic issue regarding the importance of maintenance in the modern mining industry must be faced squarely by the top manage- ment of each company before any real progress can be made in organizing a maintenance program for optimum effectiveness. Just a few decades ago the maintenance at coal mines consisted primarily of a blacksmith for sharpening picks and shoeing mules; as a result, probably less than 5%of the total mining cost went to maintenance and some 80% was operating expenses (operating labor). With each succeeding advance in equipment design towards larger, more complex, and more productive units, the pendu- lum swings the other way. As an example, haulage trucks have progressed through various stages in the past 20 years from 15-ton units to a 240-ton truck now in the "shakedown" or experimental stage. The following com- parison between 15-ton, 50-ton, and 100-ton haulage trucks clearly illus- trates this changing cost pattern in terms of percent of overall costs for running each size unit. Until the advent of the porphyry coppers and the introduction of flotation which soon followed, crushing and grinding for many years proceeded along somewhat stereotyped lines, without important alteration in type of machinery. For the finer crushing and grinding, stamps, rolls, and various patterns of Huntington and Chilean mills were in general use. Ball-mills were in use abroad, but owing to their small capacity and the high cost of screens and steel, they never obtained much footing in the United States. Tube-mills were first introduced into the crushing departments of cyanide plants when it was found that for crushing finer than 30-mesh other types of crushing machinery were not efficient. In order to crush with one pass, these mills were made 18 to 22 ft. (5.5 to 6.7 m.) in length. Pebbles were used as a grinding medium and the mills were lined with either silex blocks or fragments of quartz or flint pebbles set in cement. While the cylindrical tube pebble-mill had been used to some extent in small installations of concentration mills, the first instance of its use on a large scale was at the concentrating plant of the Miami Copper Co., where 8-ft. by 22-in. (2.5-m. by 55.9-cm.) Hardinge mills were tried out against Chileans. The results of these experiments led to the gradual replacement of the Chilean by the Hardinge mill. Robert Franke published an article' describing the work done, comparing the two types of mills. At the same time, according to Franke, a test was run using a 6-ft. (1.8-m.) Hardinge ball-mill as a substitute for rolls for intermediate crushing on 1/2-in. material. According to Franke, this mill was soon discarded, since it was found that to obtain the desired product the mill must be limited in capacity. The Miami Copper Co. made no test with other types of ball- or pebble-mills. Following this example, others installed the conical type; and when the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. decided to build a concentrator, it adopted the conical mill. THE task of recovering most of the contents of an oil and gas reservoir economically presents many and varied problems. In order to attempt intelligently a solution to these problems, an understanding of fundamental physical laws is essential. As the pertinent facts needed in applying these laws to recovery problems are not readily obtainable, observation must be made and the data tabulated. Here, good judgment must be exercised, for at best the information is meager. The engineer is well fitted to undertake the task of solving this problem. In my opinion, the decision on the part of some production executives to allow the engineer to cope with the oil recovery situation and other problems, is an outstanding example of improvement in production methods. The executive head must make this decision or the qualified engineer will be working under a severe handicap with the present system of supervising the production of oil and gas. A qualified engineer should have not only the required technical training but also enough field experience to enable him to understand the difficulties encountered in producing oil and gas. Such a man tactfully cooperating with the practical oil man can greatly improve present methods of oil recovery. The realization that nature's forces have not been efficiently controlled in past recovery of petroleum deposits has recently brought distinct improvement in production methods. Papers are to be presented at this meeting discussing in detail improved methods of conserving gas in both flowing and pumping wells, and also methods of lifting oil after Nature's supply of gas has proved inadequate. The application of back pressure to producing oil wells has not, to my knowledge, been extensively applied in Oklahoma or Kansas up to the present time. Most of the flowing wells are allowed to flow through the casing until the rock pressure has been dissipated. However, some flowing wells have been tubed before the well stopped flowing through the casing. Recording pressure-gages can be installed to study well performance.
