THROUGHOUT the anthracite industry's history, the problem of handling and dis¬posing of refuse material has been one of major importance. In the early days of the industry's activities, only the large sizes of anthracite were satisfactory for market requirements and the smaller sizes were deposited as refuse. As time went by, more efficient coal-burning equipment was developed and a market demand was created for the finer sizes of coal. This demand made it possible to recover market¬able coal from banks deposited as refuse in the earlier days of mining. The same condition holds good today and we can see a definite trend toward the objective of utilizing the No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat sizes. Under present conditions, we know that a limited market exists for No. 4 and 5 buckwheat; we know that the finer sizes of anthracite can be burned as pulverized fuel; we know that these fine sizes can be processed and sold as bri¬quettes, and we also know that the heat content of these fine sizes of coal is compar¬able with that of the sizes now merchan¬dized. Therefore, it should be the objective of the industry to conserve these fine sizes of coal in such manner that if and when processing facilities are developed, and market demands exist, the material can be salvaged and made available to meet these demands. From the standpoint of economical future reclamation, the ideal method of disposing of refuse containing the finer sizes of coal is to deposit it in banks separate and apart from other breaker refuse. By this procedure, the minimum amount of material will be processed in future salvage operations to recover the No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat sizes. Many collieries in the anthracite region are operated under leases that have a specific term. These lease agreements provide that, upon expiration of the lease by term, exhaustion or otherwise, the ownership of the refuse material reverts to the lessor. Therefore, a question was raised in the minds of these operators: Why should I assume the expense of such pro¬cedure when I have no assurance that I will benefit by the future processing and sale of these fine sizes? Under present conditions, the answer to this question is not one of choice but of necessity, as restrictions imposed by legislation make it mandatory on operators of preparation plants to take necessary steps to properly treat silt-laden waters before permitting them to enter the streams. By reason of these restrictions, the disposal of fine sizes becomes a secondary_ rather than a primary operating con sideration, and the procedure for disposing of this refuse becomes a matter of choice governed principally by topographical and geographical conditions. METHODS OF HANDLING REFUSE There are three principal methods of handling and disposing of fine-size refuse; namely :

The interaction of the crlloying eletnenls, nickel and chromium, with the impurity elements, antimony, pIzosphorus, tin, and arsenic, to producse reversible temper brittleness in a series of high-purity steels containing 0.40 wt pct C has been investigated. The alloyed steels contained approximately 3.5 pcl Ni, 1.7 pct Cr, and 0.05 to 0.08 pct of the particular irnpurity to be investigated. Susceptibility to teirlper embrittlement was measured by comparing the notched-bar transition temperature of each steel after quenching from the final temper and after very slow cooling (step cooling;) following the final temper. A plain carbon steel without alloying elements, bu/ ud/h 0.08 pel Sh, does not embrittle when step-cooled through the emzbrittling range of temperatures. The same embrittling treatment, applied to a steel with about the same antinzony content but with nickel and chvonziunz added, causes a 700°C increase in transition temperature. If chromium or nickel is the only alloying element, the increase in transition temperature is only 50%, again with antimony present. A carbon-free iron containing nickel, chromium, and antimony shou~s a 200°C shift in transition temperature for the same thermal treatment. Specific alloy-impurily interactions are also observed for the other impurity elements, phosphorus, tin, and arsenic. Additional investigations involving electron microscopy, trzicrohard-ness tests of vain boundaries, minor additions of zirconiutn and the rare earth and noble metals, nzainly with negative results, are also described. HE particular type of embrittlement investigated is that which is encountered in alloy steels tempered in the temperature range from about 350" to 525'C or slowly cooled through this range of temperatures when tempered above this range. This type of embrittlement is sometimes called reversible temper brittleness to distinguish it from the embrittlement indicated by a minimum in the room-temperature V -notch Charpy energy vs tempering-temperature curve encountered in the range 28 0" to 350°C. Temper brittle-ness seriously restricts the use of many alloy steels since it precludes tempering or use in the embrittling range of temperatures and may significantly raise the ductile-brittle transition temperature of heavy-section forgings and castings tempered above the embrittling range, since such sections cannot be sufficiently rapidly cooled after tempering to avoid embrittlement. The very voluminous literature of temper brittle-ness up to about 1960 has been reviewed by woodfine' and LOW.' Of particular significance to the present investigation was the demonstration by Balajiva, Cook, and worn3 that high-purity Ni-Cr steel does not exhibit temper brittleness and the subsequent detailed and systematic study by Steven and Balajiva~ of the effect of impurity additions on the susceptibility to embrittlement of Ni-Cr steels. Steven and Balajiva showed that, of the impurities which may be found in commercial steels, Sb, As, P, Sn, Mn, and Si could all produce temper brittleness in a high-purity Ni-Cr steel. The principal purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of particular alloy-impurity combinations on susceptibility to temper embrittlement. The steels used were high-purity 0.30 to 0.40 wt pct C steels containing 3.5 wt pct Ni and 1.7 wt pct Cr, separately or in combination. The susceptibility of these steels was then determined when approximately 500 ppm by weight of antimony, arsenic, phosphorus, or tin were added as an impurity. The melting, casting, and forging practices used in the preparation of the materials investigated are described in Appendix A. Table A-I in this appendix shows the analysis of all steels to be discussed. The steels were produced as 20- or 2-lb heats. The smaller heats were used after it had been demonstrated (see Appendix B) that a small, round, notched test specimen could be used to measure the shift in the ductile-brittle transition temperature caused by temper brittleness with about the same result as that obtained by Charpy testing. HEAT TREATMENT Unless otherwise noted, all steels were tested for embrittlement in the tempered martensitic condition. A typical heat treatment for a 0.40 C, 3.5 Ni, 1.7 Cr steel was: 1 hr at 870"C, in argon, quench into oil at 100"C, quench into liquid nitrogen, temper 1 hr at 625"C, and water-quench. The warm oil quench was used where quench-cracking was encountered; otherwise the initial quench was into room-temperature oil or water. For other compositions austenitizing temperatures were 50°C above Acs with the remainder of the thermal cycle the same. Steels in this condition, with no further heat treatment, are designated as non-embrittled. The above quenching and tempering cycle for the 0.40 pct C steels resulted in as-quenched hardnesses of 48 to 53 RC and as-tempered hardnesses of 24 to 31 Rc except in the case of the plain nickel or plain carbon steels. In these, the as-tempered hardness was as low as 80 to 90 Rg. No attempt was made to adjust the tempering temperature to obtain the same hardness in ali steels since it was felt that a uniform thermal cycle was more important than exactly equivalent hardness values. An experimental method to determine the carbon activity in various solid solutions was developed. Samples of the solid solutions and an Fe-C reference sample were equilibrated with respect to carbon content by annealing them in a Hz-CHI gas mixture in a closed cell. The carbon content of each sample was determined, and the carbon activity was obtained from the carbon content of' the reference sample and well-established data for the dependence of the carbon activity on the carbon content in Fe-C alloys. The influence of vanadium on the activity of carbon in austenitic Fe-C-V alloys at 1000°C was determined by this technique. A general semiempirical correlation was developed to describe the dependence of the activity coefficient of- carbon on the composition of ternary austenitic iron-base alloys containing interstitial carbon and a substitutional solute. The correlation is particularly useful in predicting the partitioning of- carbon between various alloys. THE influence of substitutional solutes on the activity of interstitial solutes in metallic solid solutions is important in the theory of alloy phases. Solid solutions of particular interest are the fcc austenite phases of ternary Fe-C-Z systems, in which carbon is the interstitial solute and Z represents any substitutional solute. Carbon-activity data are also needed in these solid solutions to solve practical problems; the quantitative treatment of diffusion-controlled transformations' is an examvle. Experimental information is available for ternary austenitic solid solutions containing Mn,2 Si,2 and A16 as the substitutional solute. Because qualitative preliminary studies indicated that vanadium appreciably decreases the carbon activity,14 the present investigation was undertaken to determine the influence of vanadium on the activity of carbon in austenite. Although Flender and ever" measured carbon activity over a range of compositions in the Fe-C-V system, they were primarily interested in determining phase boundaries in the ternary system, so most of their measurements were outside the composition range for stability of single-phase austenite. Petrova and Shvartsman' also made limited measurements of the carbon activity in Fe-C-V alloys. The dependence of the carbon activity on the carbon content of an alloy may be determined by passing COCOz or H2-CH4 gas mixtures of carefully measured composition over the alloys, determining their equilibrium carbon content, and utilizing the relevant equilibrium relationships. smith16 used this technique with both CO-COZ and HZ-CH4 gas mixtures to determine the dependence of carbon activity on carbon content in pure Fe-C alloys. His data, which are in good agreement with those of some previous and subsequent investigators,6'17 but not with those of others,lfl'ao are usually considered to be the most reliable. Although the same method can be applied to Fe-C-Z alloys, it is difficult experimentally, because the appropriate gas mixtures are almost pure CO or Hz. A simpler technique is to simultaneously equilibrate the Fe-C-Z alloys and pure Fe-C alloys with the gas mixtures, and then use Smith's data to determine the carbon activity in the pure Fe-C alloy. A number of investigators have employed this technique. others Have used the partitioning of carbon at the interface of a diffusion couple prepared from an Fe-C alloy and a Fe-C-Z alloy. In the present study, a closed-cell method was developed by which carbon was selectively transferred via a gas medium between pure Fe-C alloys and Fe-C-V alloys which were not in physical contact. A similar method was developed independently by Heckler and winchel14 and used to study the Fe-C-Ni system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. In a typical experiment, a 5-g Fe-C sample was placed in one compartment of a quartz cell, and a 5-g Fe-V sample was placed in each of the other compartments. FLANKING the Valley of Mexico on the northeast is a mountain range known as the Sierra de Pachuca. This northwesterly-trending range is about 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, its summit attaining an elevation of more than 10,000 feet above sea level, or 2000 feet above the valley floor. Pachuca, a town of 50,000 inhabitants, lies nestled at the southwest base of the range, 60 miles northeast of Mexico City. Three miles to the east, just over the summit and on the northeasterly slope, is the mountain town of Real del Monte with a population of about 20,000. These are the two principal towns in a 40-sq mile area whose yield has brought the district to its high rank among the world's silver producers. Total production probably exceeds 1.25 billion ounces of silver and 4.5 million ounces of gold. Exploitation by the Spanish was under way by 1530. As the mines were deepened operations became handicapped by the inadequate method of handling water with horse whims and bull skins. To offset this disadvantage a two-mile drainage tunnel was started in 1749 and completed ten years later. John Taylor of London acquired the mines from the third Count of Regla in 1824 and formed the Compania de Real del Monte y Pachuca. Two years later Cornish pumps were brought from England. A Mexican company purchased the British interest in 1848 and within a few years resumed an old project of driving a second, lower three-mile drainage tunnel, completing it in 1857. After American interests acquired control of the property in 1906 operations expanded to an unprecedented scale, despite periods of political strife, unstable prices, labor problems, and a growing burden of taxation. An idea of the scale of operations may be gained from records of the last two decades prior to 1947, the last year for which production information is at hand, during which time production ranged from 1.4 million to 1.1 million tons per year, and the combined development and exploration, exclusive of diamond drilling, amounted to about 18 miles annually. Pachuca differs from Zacatecas and some other Mexican silver vein districts that flourished and declined in earlier centuries in that a substantial part of its total production was made after 1900. While the district's accelerated activity in this century was largely due to the successful application of the cyanide process to the treatment of the ores, improved pumping methods, and new mechanical equipment, it was at the same time stimulated by the opening up of important new orebodies as a result of active and extensive exploration of the vein system. Some of these orebodies were found on veins which terminate upward far below the surface, and though these particular veins do not crop out, they show relationship with a type of alteration which may be their surface expression. The district has been studied by many able geologists, and a large store of information has been accumulated, much of which is recorded in published as well as private papers. Wall Rocks Extrusive Rocks: The Sierra de Pachuca is a thick accumulation of Tertiary eruptive rocks consisting mainly of flows, breccias, and tuffs. Numerous recognizable volcanic vents within the range itself manifest that the range was built up by material ejected from these vents. The maximum thickness of the volcanic pile is not known, but from deep exploration and from relationship with Mesozoic sediments to the north and east it is inferred that the average thickness in the main part of the district may be at least 6000 ft. The extrusive rocks comprise four general types, which in ascending order of age are: andesite, rhyolite, dacite, and basalt. The veins are confined largely to the andesite, the dominant rock of the region. This paper is a description of the opera-tion and results of a Humphreys Spiral Silt Cleaning Plant at the Powderly Colliery 01 The Hudson Coal Co. during the first nine months of operation and follows a preliminary description given at the .Institute cite Institute in May, 1947, in a paper titled "Preparation of Anthracite Silt for Boiler Fuel in a Humphreys Spiral Test Plant" by H. H. Otto, V. H. Wilson and W. L. Dennen. This plant is considered a full size op-erating test plant and, like all new plants, numerous minor changes in the methods of operation have been made from time to time to secure the results desired. Views of the silt preparation plant and of the screening house are given in Fig I and 2. This plant consists of 48 spirals in 8 batteries of 6 spirals each, 36 of which were to be operated as primary spirals and the remaining 12 as secondary spirals. A brief description of the plant and its operation follows. The only material cleaned at the plant during 1947 was that carried in the underflow from the Thickener which han-dles the Breaker waste water. This under-flow, amounting to approximately 2000 gpm of water and containing 12.6 pct of solids, is pumped to vibrating screens where the plus 3/16-in. material is removed. (Fig 3). This oversize material drops into a pocket from which it is trucked to the run-of-mine tipple for re-preparation.

The stabilities of finely divided mineral suspensions were determined as functions of pH and concentrations of polyethylene oxide, sodium ligninsulfonate, sodium dodecybulfate, and sodium oleate. In addition, the electrokinetic potentials of the minerals were determined under identical pH and additive concentration conditions. Flocculation or dispersion of the suspensions is discussed in terms of both the amount and manner of adsorption at the appropriate solid-liquid interface as it is influenced by additive concentration and pH.

THROUGHOUT its history the American iron and steel industry has constantly striven to improve the quality and reduce the cost of its products. No one needs to be told how well it has succeeded. Its success in making steel products at such a low cost has been achieved mainly through large-scale production. While costs have gone down as the rate of production and the degree of mechanization increased, quality of product has been actually improved. Thus high-tonnage records are important only in the light of high quality of the steel. Quality is the watchword! Continual improvement in quality has come as a result of research, not only in the laboratory but in the large commercial units in the plant. In fact, so many operations of the industry are on such a huge scale that experimental work must be done under commercial operating conditions so every progressive steel plant is a research laboratory.

Undergrorlnd combustion operations were initiated in a 60-acre Bartlesville sand "shoe-string" reservoir in Allen Connty, Kans., in 1956. Tests in separate patterns were conducted using various co~nbinations of air and recycle gas to propagate combustion fronts from the injection toward the producing wells. These patterns were made up of 6 injection and 20 prodrrcing wells Gas and liquid prorluctiorz from each pattern was measured on an individual-well basis, and comparisons were made between the three patterns to ascertain the relative effects of injected gas composition on production behavior. Breakthrough of the combustion front at a well was characterized by an increase in water production from the well followed by an increase in bottomhole temperatrrre to approximately 250" F. After burning fronts had broken through at five producing wells, operations were terminated in 1960. From the total project approximately 79,000 bbl of oil were produced during thermal operations at a cumulative produced GOR of 23 Mcf/bbl. No appreciable change in the character of the produced crude was observed. Combustion in the reservoir was maintained with injected gas compositions ranging fronz 6 per cent oxygen in recycle gas to 100 per cent air. lnjectiotz of large quantities of recycle gas resulted in higher producing GOR's from offset wells than were measured from a pattern into ~vhich straight air ~vas injected. The air required to move the combustion front through I acre-ft of reservoir was computed to be 20 MMscf. This valrre was found to be relatively independent of the quantities of recycle gas injected. The recovery efficiency from the swept area was esti~izated to be about 59 per cent. Areas swept were similar in shape to tlzose obtained with a laboratory potentiometric model. Samples of sund taken from behind the burning front by coring indicated almost total oil removal from the sand. Petrographic analysis of the core samples indicated that the sand had been heated to peuk temperature of rlbout 1,200" F. No rignificant difference in peak temperature was forrnd in two areas where compositions of injected gas were quite different. Compression costs for thermal recovery were estimated to be $1,20/bhl of produced oil. INTRODUCTION The use of the "forward combustion" process as an oil recovery method has received a great deal of attention. This method involves ignition of the formation in an injection well, followed by propagation of a combustion front through the reservoir. Combustion is maintained by the injection of an oxygen-containing gas to react with reservoir hydrocarbons. As the flame front progresses through the reservoir, oil and formation water are vaporized, driven forward in the gaseous phase and recondensed in the cooler part of the formation. In turn, the condensed fluids push oil into the producing wellbores. Completed field tests of the process were first reported by Kuhn and Koch,' and by Grant and Szasz.' Results from other tests have since been reported by Walter,3 by Moss, White and McNeil,' and by Gates and Ramey." ach of these tests essentially utilized a single injection well surrounded by four or more producing wells. Sinclair Research, Inc., elected to do field experimental work using a number of test patterns in a single field in order that comparisons between various operating schemes could be made. The site selected and purchased in 1955 for this experimental work was a 60-acre Bartlesville sand reservoir located in Allen County, Kans. Combustion operations were initiated in mid-1956. Between that time and termination of the project in mid-1960, combustion fronts were propagated from injection wells to producers in three separate well patterns, using different mixtures of air and recycle gas. The test was terminated before sweep of the three patterns was complete so that information about the effect of combustion on the swept areas could be obtained by coring. Results from the test in the form of injection and producing well performance have been carefully recorded, and these form the general basis for this paper. DESCRIPTION OF RESERVOIR The reservoir in which the combustion tests were conducted is a Bartlesville sand "shoe-string", typical of a number of small reservoirs in Southeastern Kansas. Average reservoir characteristics are shown in Table 1. Fig. 1 is an isopachous map of the producing sand showing the reservoir to be approximately 400-ft wide and 2,500-ft long. Maximum net productive sand thickness is 21 ft. Fig. 2 shows a typical core analysis obtained by coring with water-base mud. The reservoir has no appreciable dip and is closed on the sides by degradation of sand into shale. The main body of sand is heavily laminated with shale stringers, which are not continuous between wells. REVISION of the United States mining law is needed. chiefly because of the following reasons: 1. The conceptions as to the characteristics of orebodies that were held at the time the statute of 1872 was enacted have since proved to be in many respects erroneous. 2. The operation of the existing law has been found to work unnecessary hardship upon many claimants to mineral land. 3. The existing statute fails in large degree to encourage development of mineral resources. 4. The existing law often produces conflict between placer and lode-claim rights, working unnecessary injustice to placer claimants. 5. The methods of establishing the rights of locators on United States mineral land are defective, and are not uniform throughout the States within which such lands exist. LAW OF THE APEX The objections to the so-called "law of the apex" are so well known as to require no detailed statement. It is sufficient to point out that the apex rule was based upon the notion that ore deposits consisted of well-formed veins included between definite walls, like the slice of ham in a sandwich. The fact is that veins conforming to that simple type are rare. Irregularity is the rule, and the chief metal production of the United States comes from masses which bear no resemblance to the tabular form of vein. Manifestly the law of the apex fails completely in such cases. Moreover, the tendency is constantly toward the exploitation of ores of lower grade than could formerly be worked, and such deposits exist mainly in the form of large irregular impregnated zones and masses, so that the future. development of our mineral resources would be continuously embarrassed by shadowy claims to extra-lateral rights by the locators of so-called apexes

SILICOSIS is a term known to almost everyone today. Yet, in spite of a great deal of study, much is still to be learned regarding the disease. Government organizations are still continuing their investigations, begun near Joplin, Mo., 25 years ago. Work is also being done in several universities, as Harvard, Pennsylvania, Rochester, and Toronto, and at least two private organizations, the Air Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc., and the Saranac Laboratories for the Study of Tuberculosis, devote most of their time to this subject. Similar studies have been and are being made in many other countries.

MINING men in general- are a roving lot but not so Selwyn G. Blaylock. Immediately after graduation from McGill in 1899 he went to the Trail smelter and he is there today though he spent three or four years of his early professional life at other British Columbia mining centers. Either he sensed the great possibilities of the company of which he is now vice-president and general manager, or it sensed his; more probably both. Certainly the association was a happy and fortunate one.
