Since 1571, when the Institute was founded, many of the most important papers in the English language, on the various phases of mining and metallurgy, have appeared as Institute publications. As members of the Institute regularly receive the publications in which they are interested, this discussion is primarily for nonmembers who wish to know of them. The Institute has several means of issuing papers which have been submitted and accepted. The monthly journal, Mining and Metallurgy, is the magazine of the Institute. In it appear notices and reports of official business as well as many papers and contributions which do not appear otherwise. The annual subscription price of the magazine to nonmembers is $3 per year; Canadian and foreign postage $1 extra; single copies 50 cents; back issues $1 each. Many papers are published separately each year. They are issued in one or the other of two numbered series; namely, Technical Publications and Contributions, and of the latter there are four forms: Preprints, Mimeographs, Reprints, and Unpublished Manuscripts. A Technical Publication or Contribution (in any form) is issued by the Institute when it is listed in Mining and Metallurgy. Technical Publications are sent automatically to members who have asked in advance for papers on a given subject. All members are entitled to a copy of every paper in either series, except when a Contribution is an Unpublished Manuscript. Con¬tributions in the form of Unpublished Manuscripts are filed in the Engineering Societies Library and copies of some of these papers may be found in a few selected libraries throughout the country.

At the Seventy-sixth meeting of the Institute, held in New York, N. Y., February, 1899,I presented a paper on this subject entitled, Coal-Cutting Machinery,' which has become somewhat out of date, in view of the decade's development in this feature of the coal-mining industry. It should be explained that the present paper is limited to the use of mining-machines in bituminous mines. Practically all of the anthracite mined is "shot from the solid," no undercutting being done. Anthracite-mining is therefore not considered in the statistics or other references. The statistical record as compiled by the U. S. Geological Survey shows that in 1898, the year preceding the presentation of my former paper, there were 32,413,144 short tons of coal undercut by the use of machines. In 1907 the machine-mined coal-product amounted to 138,547,823 short tons. In sympathy with the general decrease in coal-production during 1908, the output of machine-mined coal decreased to 123,183,334 short tons, but the proportion of machine-mined coal to the total output, nevertheless, showed an increase, from 35.1 per cent. in 1907 to 37 per cent. in 1908. In 1898 only 19.5 per cent. of the total product was unclercut.by the use of machines. The classification here used is one of convenience only; it is not intended to include all known types of ore deposits. The characteristic features of the several well-marked types of primary mineralizations are described without reference to the ultimate source of their metals. The minerals of many deposits of obscure origin were probably introduced through fissures that are now healed, or are due to the migration of metals from such deposits. It is not within the scope of this book to enter into a general discussion of the genesis of ore deposits but, in view of the progress being made in our comprehension of the conditions under which ore deposits were formed, mention should be made of recent work. J. E. Spurr's two volumes, "The Ore Magmas," are recommended as crystallizing the views of those who are inclined to ascribe the origin of most ore deposits to a differential precipitation from magmatic rock masses and to the migration and precipitation of the viscous, liquid or gaseous exhalations from those masses. The Pacific rim countries, comprising more than half the globe, represent a complex mix of developed and developing nations. The area comprises a large segment of the industrialized world. Within its boundaries are also found many of the world's greatest mineral resources largely concentrated in the less developed countries. The conflicting objectives of these developed and developing nations are giving rise to changes in the traditional patterns of world resource development. Powerful political and socio-economic factors affecting the world today are having a great bearing on natural resource developments in the Pacific basin. New forms of partnerships have been emerging in developing nations which have had a great impact on the mining com- munity, lending institutions, as well as political relations. The United States and Japan have been substantially responsible in the past for the development of natural resources in this area of the world. Their role, however, is undergoing significant metamorphosis. The rapidly changing economic and social environment in the developing countries is producing new tensions which affect future collaboration between producers and users of natural resources. To understand current problems, I believe, it is worthwhile to examine historical trends in this area which may help defining alternatives facing us in the future. In modern times the United States was the first country in the Pacific basin to start development of resources on a massive scale. Discussion of the paper of E. B. THORNHILL, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1653 to 1670. D. B. HUNTLEY, Oakland, Cal.-About 15 years ago it chanced to be my lot to cyanide some mill tailings, assaying about $5 per toll in gold and, a few cents in silver. It was in southern Idaho, a. desert region where costs are nearly as large as in central Nevada. We knew that we had a lot of tailings that had been amalgamated and contained about 1 lb. of quicksilver per ton. We knew that we would dissolve some of the quicksilver when we cyanided them with say 0.25 per cent. cyanide solution. We figured (optimistically) that the cyanide would dissolve all of the quicksilver, and we thought to capture all of that, 1 lb. per ton; and we figured out profits as partly gold, partly silver, and partly quicksilver from the recovery in working those tailings. Actually, however, we did this: We had a battery of three large, old-fashioned silver-mill retorts. We retorted our zinc-dust precipitate, recovering about ¼ lb. of quicksilver per ton treated. That was only a loss of 75 per cent. of what we originally had, but still it was profitable by virtue of the conditions. I mention it partly to call attention to the crude old way of doing it, and partly to call attention to how chemical methods for recovering quicksilver have developed in the last 15 years.

For several years, a mine in Colorado experienced considerable trouble from small fires caused by the blasting of coal. Although a well-known make of permissible powder was used, it was first thought that the powder ignited gas that might be present and that this, in turn, set fire to line brattices or to the coal. Experiments were, therefore, conducted with another make of powder, but the results convinced the superintendent of the mine, Robt. Williams, Jr., that the fires were not caused by the powder but by the high-voltage electric current used for detonating the shots. The mine "makes" gas very freely, giving off from three-fourths to one million cubic feet of methane every 24 hours. The coal is a good grade bituminous of a very free burning quality. Electric shot-firing from the outside, after all men and animals were outside, had been practiced for a number of years. The shooting circuit was connected with the main power circuit at the mouth of each entry. Shooting circuit switches were mounted in boxes, which were kept locked with the handle of the switch, in open position, showing through the bottom of the box. The door of the box could not be shut and locked when the shooting switch was closed. At the entrance to each room, or working place, a small switch, called the miner's switch, was placed on the shooting line. It was the duty of the miner, when entering his place at the beginning of the shift, to see that this switch was open and that it was kept open until he left the placc at the end of the shift to go out of the mine. Grounded return was used for main power lines. The current was 500 volts, direct current, with 100 to 300 amp. The nearest working face was 9600 ft, from the shot-firers' switch outside the mine and the most remote working face was 2½ miles. (communication to the Secretary*) :—In answer to one of the inquiries made of Mr. Conner, and as a matter of historical record, I beg to say that the idea of supporting the strata over worked-out areas in coalmines by flushing the openings full of culm originated and was put into actual practice by the late R. C. Luther, a former member of the Institute, at that time Chief Mining Engineer, and later General Manager, of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. In the early 80's the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. purchased from Messrs. Hecksher & Co. the Eohinoor colliery, situated in the western part of the borough of Shenan-doah, Pa. On taking possession of the colliery the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. made a conlplete resurvey of the mine-workings, giving an absolutely correct map which showed not only the plan of the mine-workings, but also every improvement on the surface over the workings, and the marked features of the surface of the ground. Tidal elevations were shown at every eurvey-station in the mine and on the surface, so that, as is the case with all the maps of the company, contour-maps of either the surface or the bottom of any coal-seam, or geological cross-sections, could be constructed directly from the information on the mine-maps. In a cornparatively short time after the company took possession of the colliery, the workings which extended under the western portion of the borough of Shenandoah began to cause trouble and damage dwellings and other buildings in that section of the town. The lots in this section had been sold, in many cases, to individuals by the Gilbert & Shaefer Estate, owners of the coal-lands on which the colliery was located. In

EVERYONE engaged in the teaching of mining engineering will, I suppose, agree that the most difficult subject to teach is "Mining Methods." One primary difficulty is that the students taking the course have either had no previous experience in mining, or else they have had; either seeming to be somewhat of a drawback. The students who are unfamiliar with mines find it difficult to visualize underground conditions, as described and illustrated with sketches and maps, while those who have had underground experience seem to 'find it difficult to visualize anything much different from that which they have already seen. This reminds one of the remark about the Presbyterian doctrine of predestination, to the effect that "you are damned ,if you do; and damned if you don't."

THE Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less. Practically all of the leases granted in the past required the erection of a concentrating plant on each lease, a condition that has had a pronounced effect upon the mining and milling methods of the district, since the apparent ore reserves on each tract were too small to justify large

MR. NEILSON was born Aug. 12, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Dec. 30, 1906. His business career began with his graduation, in the class of 1862, from the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania. For a short time after graduation he was instructor in mathematics at the college, and then became associated with Messrs. Booth & Garrett, chemists, of his native city: In 1867 he was sent to the Adirondack mountains to care for mining interests of the late Jay Cooke, and spent about three years there, operating the forges at Elizabethtown, Essex county, N. Y. He also prepared an interesting monograph on Catalan forges and their operations. In 1868 he published a chart showing the material progress of the United States, and the cost of certain staple products during a series of years, which is believed to be the first of its kind issued in this country. In 1870 he made a trip to the Pacific Coast, prior to entering the service of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. In 1871, when the Logan Iron & Steel Co., of Burnham, Pa., failed, Mr. Neilson was appointed receiver, re-organized the company, became' its General Manager, and spent more than four years in this work. In the meantime, he became interested in the Freedom forge of the same place, and, with Mr. Wm. Burnham and Mr. Milton Brosius, laid the foundations for what is now the Standard Steel Works. From Jan. 1, 1877, to April 1, 1890, he was General Manager of these works, and closely associated with the Baldwin Locomotive Works. In 1878 he was in charge of the first consignment of Baldwin locomotives to Europe, which, with a picked crew of men from Baldwin's, he took to Eydtkennen, Russia, and placed in service. J. A. MATHEWS, ? Syracuse, N. Y. (written discussion§).-This paper by Prof. Hoyt, together with the papers by Messrs. Jeffries, Clayton, Rawson, and Moore, submitted at this meeting, constitute a valuable symposium on what might be called the "mechanism of failures." Prof. Hoyt has not emphasized too strongly the importance of the notched-bar test, or the notch as a feature of a structural design. There has been a good deal of misunderstanding in reference to the value of the notched-bar test, and various vibratory tests such as the Wohler, White-Souther, Stanton, and Upton-Lewis have been devised. This form of testing has received more attention abroad than it has here, and has been the subject of a great many very careful investigations. I have heard many expressions of surprise at the apparent lack of agreement between the results of vibratory tests and the results of shock tests. It is not necessary that the values obviously should agree, because obviously different properties are being tested. In reference to the presence of notches or sharp corners in the construe tion of machines or parts, would say that these more frequently lead to fatigue failures than to typical notch-bar failures clue to sudden impact. I have seen a number of airplane crankshafts that had apparently failed due to a keyway that was left with fairly sharp angles at the bottom. The material satisfactorily responded to every test, including the notched-bar test, nevertheless the shafts failed, showing a fatigue break, usually spiral and sometimes making at least one complete turn around the shaft. The lack of concordance between supposedly duplicate notched-bar tests in my experience has been most often due to lack of care in the machining of the test piece itself. Prof. Hoyt draws attention to a report of Charpy in 1909, in which two steels of almost identical physical properties show very different results in the notched-bar test. He states that the microstructure at once showed that one steel was in poorer condition than the other. More recent experience has shown other cases of this kind where not even the microstructure serves to reveal any startling differences in structure.

IN March 1949 the Calaveras Cement Co. was sued by five landowners whose properties are located in the vicinity of the plant. These landowners—all of them cattle ranchers—sued for dust damages of $120,338 and for an injunction preventing the company from casting dust upon their properties in injurious quantities. The issue was split, the jury deciding the amount of damages and the court handling the injunction features. The action came to trial before a jury in April of that year and resulted in damages being awarded in the amount of $7,508. A month later the court issued its injunction requiring recovery of stack dust to an 87 pct minimum. The Calaveras plant, shown in Fig. 1, is located three miles from San Andreas in the heart of the Mother Lode country, about 45 miles east of Stockton, Calif. Since it is in a small town, the company's responsibilities to its employees and to the community are different from those of plants located in large centers of population. Construction of the plant was begun in 1925, and production was started the following year. Standard gray Portland cement as well as several specialty cements are produced. Production facilities have been continually enlarged so that the present capacity is more than double what it was 25 years, ago. The most important item in the company's expansion program was the purchase in 1945 of an 11 ft 3 in. x 360 ft Allis-Chalmers kiln which had been declared surplus by the Defense Plant Corp. The company is now able to produce about 2,500,000 bbl of cement a year, and employment at the plant is approximately 300. The production of cement has always involved a dust problem, solution of which has been attempted in a number of different ways. By far the most efficient method of catching dust discharge is electric precipitation. Soon after the company went into production in the 1920's, the landowners near the plant began complaining about dust discharge. The company settled the matter by paying them a total of $27,000 for dust damages incurred during the period from 1929 to 1938. In the latter year the two-unit Cot-trell Electric Precipitator shown in Fig. 2 was installed and collected over 85 pct of the dust resulting from operation of the two 11 ft 3 in. x 10 ft x 240 in. kilns. From 1938 until 1946 the landowners registered no objection and were apparently satisfied with that dust recovery. In 1946, however, the substantially higher production resulting from operation of the new kiln immediately overtaxed the facilities of the existing two-unit precipitator. In a short time claims for dust damages were again received from the landowners. The company informed them that because of postwar shortages it would take several years to install a new precipitator. The company stated that it intended to purchase an additional precipitator and offered in the meanwhile to pay the landowners a fair amount to cover their damages. This offer was rejected and the landowners filed suit in the Superior Court of Calaveras County asking for total damages of $120,-338 and for the injunction outlined above. Case for the Ranchers The attorneys for the plaintiffs produced three different types of witnesses: first, the landowners themselves and members of their families; second, other cattle raisers who were sympathetic to the plaintiffs; and third, several types of technical experts: veterinarians, soil chemists, and an aerial photographer. The testimony of these witnesses was designed to establish that the flue dust from the plant had not only damaged the land and the forage, but had also caused fluorine poisoning to their animals. By a combination of these causes, the plaintiffs attempted to prove substantial loss of profits.

The national and international importance of Canada's minerals and metals producing industry is reported. The growth of the Canadian industry is traced from 1945, through the period of rapid development of the early 1950's, to the consolidation and expansion activities of the late 1950's and early 1960's. Mineral production in Canada during 1963-including steel, nonferrous metals, and fuels -is reported. It is estimated that by 1970 the Canadian industry will produce $3.9 billion worth of metals, nonmetals, and fuels.

CONSIDERABLE uncertainty is revealed in the literature regarding the nature of the titanium minerals which make up the bulk of the heavy, opaque fractions of numerous beach sand deposits of the world. An investigation was made, therefore, of beach sand concentrates of North Carolina, Florida, Brazil, and India. Magnetic concentration, X-ray, and microscope data were obtained which show that these concentrates consist essentially of ilmenite and its alteration products. The alteration, brought about by oxidation and leaching of iron values, has resulted in upgrading the ores to a range of 56 to 64 pct TiO2, as compared with 52.7 pct in ilmenite of theoretical composition. Conclusions drawn regarding the nature of the dominant titanium-bearing mineral in beach sand deposits have been based mainly on chemical composition, specific gravity, and petrography. This material has usually been referred to as ilmenite or weathered ilmenite. It has also been referred to as arizonite because in chemical composition it resembles an occurrence in Arizona which was described by Palmer1 in 1909.

In the spring of 1878 the Pine Grove Furnace, located in Cumberland County, Pa., was blown in after lying idle for several years. The fnrnace was constructed in 1770, and for over a century it has been in almost continual operation. The plant consisted in 1877, when the writer was first called there, of a stone stack 32 feet in height, inclosing a shaft and boshes, the latter being 8 feet in diameter. The blast was supplid by two wooden blowing-tubs discharging into a third, having a floating piston sustaining a box weighted to give the desired pressure, the power being furnished by a waterwheel. A small 18-pipe hot-blast stove heated the blast. The furnace was remodelled during the winter of'77-78, and a Weimer blowing-engine with a blowing-tub 5 feet in diameter and 2 feet stroke, and the necessary boilers, were substituted for the wooden tubs and water-wheel. The stack was raised and enlarged, and provided with a bell and hopper having a central drop. Water dam and tymp were added, and general repairs were made. The hot oven, however, was not increased. The furnace had always been operated with charcoal as fuel, and its reconstruction was made with a view to continue the use of charcoal, but provision was made for ample blowing capacity should other fuels at any time be employed. Although liberal arrangements had been made in cutting wood, the stock of charcoal supplied in 1878 was insufficient for the increased requirements of the remodelled plant, and notwithstanding the purchase of some 80,000 bushels from an adjacent idle furnace, there war: riot enough to keep the furnace in constant blast until a new supply could be obtained, particularly as the season was unusually backward. Instead of following the established precedent of many charcoal furnace managers, i. e., blow out every February, it was detemined to continue in blast, using coke as fuel. Accordingly, when the charcoal stock was exhansted, on March 22d, 1879, Connellsville coke was substituted, the change of fuel being made at once; that is, the coke charges followed immediately upon the last charcoal charges. Many attempts have been made during the last 40 years to evaluate the performance of gravity separation equipement, that is, the effectiveness with which light and heavy particles are separated. The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made by Cerchar at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris in 1950. The methods suggested by the Conference were accepted and very widely used in the last two decades. This paper discusses an improved method of evaluation in the light of the now-accepted standard presentation. The float-and-sink analysis of the product is presented on a Gaussian distribution curve, resulting in an easier visualization of the inherent difficulties of separation. The ogives of the distribution curve me then plotted, giving a quantitative measure of the deviation from perfect separation as an error distance instead of an error area. Illustrations of the new method are given both for gravel and for coal preparation, but the content is valid and applicable to other types of minerals which are separated by gravity methods. Many attempts had been made during the last forty years to evaluate the performance of heavy-media separation (HMS) equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which floats and sinks are separated.'-' The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made by Cerchar at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris. 6 The primary aim was the thorough understanding of the mechanism of separation and the unified presentation of data on gravity separation so that the evaluation and comparison of washery performance could be made from all over the world. No strict overall standardization has been achieved, but after the conference a more or less uniform presentation of performance was accepted, which, during the last two decades, has been very widely used. In this paper, illustration of the old methods and an improved method of evaluation will be given. HEAVY-MEDIA SEPARATION (HMS) PERFORMANCE CRITERIA In the ideal HMS process, all material lower in density than the specific gravity of separation (SGS) would be recovered as floats and all material of higher density would appear as sinks. In order to evaluate the misplaced material, the washery products are tested at the density at which the washing unit is operated. The original type of plot1,7, 8 is shown in Fig 1; this was developed primarily for coal cleaning units. The curve for raw coal represents the cumulative percentages of sink material. The refuse curve is also plotted as a cumulative sink, the percentages being expressed in terms of raw coal. This diagrammatic representation of the results of washing units has the merit of easy visual observance of the degree of separation obtained. The error areas (cross-hatched) are a measure of the amount of misplaced material and therefore they can be used to characterize the quality of separation. The ideal and actual separating performance between floats and sinks can be best seen from the partition curve developed by Tromp,2 where the ordinate is the percentage recovery of the sinks, and the abscissa is the specific gravity (Fig. 2). It can be seen from the shape of the curve that as the SGS is approached, the proportion of material reporting to the improper product increases rapidly. In fact, the SGS can be defined as the density of the material in the feed that is distributed equally between float-and-sink products. When the upper half of the curve is inverted, a shape similar to that of a Gaussian error distribution curve is obtained and therefore the analysis of gravity separation may be carried out by using the law of probability. The shape of the curve in Fig. 2 is determined partly by the density composition of the feed, and partly by the sharpness with which the unit separates floats from the sinks.9, l0

Manganese-ore has been found upon the Isthmus of Panama throughout' a region of nearly three hundred square miles, over the greater part of which, however, it is known only in small bodies without commercial value. Only six mines, controlled by two companies, have actually shipped ore, although a large area has been taken up in miningelaims. The ore-bearing region extends along the coast of the Carib. bean Sea, beginning on the west near Puerto Bello and extending easterly about 35 miles toward Point San Blas. (written discussion).-The experience of users of pulverized fuel in metallurgical work, particularly for open-hearth furnaces, has demonstrated that high ash and sulfur in pulverized fuel are a detriment, the sulfur in the coal entering into the finished product; hence, in this class of work it is extremely important, when pulverized coal is to be used, that the coal be selected with care, and only those having low percentages of sulfur be used, in combination with proper means for combustion. I have found that no general statement can be made as to the cost of pulverized coal, each installation being an individual engineering problem and necessitating a varying capital expenditure; as each installation has its own power cost, the actual cost of pulverizing varies between wide margins. It has been found that no general rule can he laid down as to either fineness or dryness; for some uses a wide range is permissible in both factors, while some classes of fuel require different treatment from others. Anthracite, coke breeze, and lignite ash will, under certain conditions, form slag, the melting point of the ash from fuel of this character being practically the same as of that from bituminous coal; furnace temperatures above the melting point of ash must therefore cause the formation of slag.
