The University of Illinois, by Prof. H. H. Stock, professor of mining engineering, sent out to its mining students a long letter urging them to attend a Chicago meeting of the Institute. It stated that the University Council authorized the remission of the registration fee for sophomore, junior and senior mining engineers who would attend the meetings and present a written account of the sessions and excursions attended. Young engineers are rarely flushed at the beginning of their careers but if they ever expect to amount to anything at the end of 10-years-they are going to regret that they have not long been a member of the Insti-tute. So that the slogan "Do it now" is snore than particularly appli-cable in their cases and nothing will better indicate to them the scope of the Institute's work and the advantages which they are to get from mem-bership than attendance at one of the big meetings of the Institute and the preparation of a written report on the sessions and excursions attended to be returned to the University.

Although many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other intercsted parties to give out their "inside information " Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County, at this time. Locality and Description The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. LouisSan Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 21/2 hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75' west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south 45" east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parall el syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin south of the Cement anticfine. The positjon of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of-Cement, has not been discovered. TOPOGKAFHY In the southwest part of the state, nearly all maps of Oklahoma show two mountain areas—Arbuckle and Wichita—which are conspicuous geological and topographic landmarks. In addition, some maps show a third, and smaller, range, named the Keechi Hills, in the vicinity of Cement. In view of the comprehensive accounts which have appeared in recent years of the oil fields of Burma, Assam and the Punjab,' this brief account will be restricted to an outline recapitulation of the position of the fields and a note on progress and developments in the last two or three years. It is actually peculiarly difficult to give an account of recent developrnents in the oil fields of the Indian Empire. The companies naturally are compelled to make a return to the Government of India of oil produced. These figures are published annually (about 10 months later) for each administrative district (which may include more than one field) where oil is produced, in the Annual Review of the Mineral Production of India (Records of the Geological Survey of India). Some details of recent developments may be given in the Annual Report of the Geological Survey of India (also published in the Records), but otherwise the companies tend to preserve a policy of extreme secrecy. Some of the smaller companies usually publish wellhead production month by month in order to encourage their shareholders when such figures are encouraging, but the larger companies do not necessarily even give figures of production in their annual reports to shareholders. Occasionally details of new tests, new machinery, and so on, leak out through the daily or weekly press in India, but, except for generalized official statements, no details :ire available as to the number of new wells, depths, wells abandoned, or other figures which are common property in other parts of the world. In the country itself the geologists preserve the utmost secrecy, and at times quite a serious system of espionage is developed. Experimental equilibrium vaporization ratios (K values) were obtained for nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, ethane and hydrogen sulfide in two natural gas-absorber oil mixtures and in two natural gas-Elk Basin crude oil mixtures. For each mixture of constant over-all composition, data were obtained at 100°, 150° and 200°F and at various pressures in the range 200 to 5,000 psia. Some effects of composition on the K values were obtained to serve as a guide in choosing K's for engineering calculations on other mixtures. The pressure cell used to obtain the data is a new type and is described here for the first time. INTRODUCTION The phase equilibria of complex hydrocarbon mixtures such as natural gases, crude oils and their mixtures have been studied previously for the purpose of finding equilibrium vaporization ratios for the hydrocarbon constitutents. In a few cases, such non-hydrocarbon.: as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide were included in the mixture. studied because they occur. in the fluids obtained from petroleum reservoirs. The increasing occurrerce. of these non-liydrocarbon.; antl their growing economic importance. make it necessary to account for them more accurately in engineering calculation.: than is now possible using the meager published data. The available data for non-hydrocarbons may he classified into two groups: namely, binary mixtures of a hydrocarbon and a non-hydrocarbon. and mixtures containing three or more components, only one of which is a non-hydrocarbon. Amon: the former. phase analyses are available for two nitrogen-HC mixtures, tve carbon dioxide-HC mixtures and three hydrogen sulfide-HC mixtures. Data for more complex mixtures are available as follows: Nitrogen-Methane-Pentane'; Nitrogen-Methane-Hexane,'; Nitrogen-Methane-Heptane'; Carbon dioxide-Natural Gas-Natural Gasorline": Carbon dioxide-Natural Gas-Crude Oil". These data have been used generally lor engineering calculations, often with little regard for their precise applicability because data for the non-hydrocarbons in the complex mixtures being dealt with were not available. The use of K values from binary data for calculation:; involving complex mixtures is open to criticism because such K's are not a function of composition and very often show large differences from the K's for the same components in a complex mixture. Thus the effects of composition must be evaluated when obtaining K's for components in complex mixtures. Poettmann and Katz " varied the carbon dioxide content of their mixture.; from about five to ten mol per cent and found substantially no effect on the K values due to this change. This was not surprising since one might expect that changing a minor com-ponent by * three mol per cent would have little effect. It is more important to find the composition change which have the largest effect on the K values. For example. varying the methane or heptanes — plus compositions over a wide rangr may have a large effect on the K'. of all components in the mixture. Interesting data to this effect were obtained by Eilerts and Smith." It was toward these problems that the experimental data presented here were directed. There are three distinct varieties of phosphate rock, in Tennessee, known commercially as: (a) the "brown" rock, which is the residual product of the weathering and natural concentration of certain phosphatic Ordovician limestones; (b) the "blue" rock, which is an unaltered phosphatic stratum of Mississippian or Devonian age; and (c) the "white" rock, which is the result of chemical replacement and deposition. Before 1894, South Carolina and Florida had supplied most of the phosphate of the United States, South Carolina leading until that date and Florida from then until the present time. In December, 1893, the blue phosphate of Tennessee was discovered almost simultaneously on Swan Creek, in Lewis County, by two independent parties—by one as the result of a careful and systematic search for a workable deposit of the long known kidney phosphate, and by the other through mistaking it for a "bloom" of coal. Leases were taken and, with further prospecting disclosing other deposits in the region, the development progressed as rapidly as could be expected without railroad transportation. In January, 1896, Judge S. Q. Weatherly, who was interested in the development of the blue phosphate, while riding along the road south of Mt. Pleasant, noticed some slabs of a brown rock in place above the limestone. He took samples, and had them analyzed, thus discovering the high-grade brown phosphate of this district. This discovery was kept a secret until July, 1896, when mining was started at the village of Mt. Pleasant. Development proceeded rapidly, many owners obtaining their capital by the sale of their rock fences, which were largely composed of slabs of high-grade brown phosphate. The development of the brown rock, which is richer and more easily mined than the blue, caused Tennessee to advance from a poor third in production to second, surpassing the output of South Carolina, and being excelled only by Florida.

Annealed and electrolytically polished pure iron was oxidized between 650° and 850°C at oxygen pressures of 0.1 to 2 microns Hg. Electron optical studies showed that oxidation occurs discontinuously over the surface and orients crystallographically with the substructure of the metal grains. IN previous papers', " the authors described the formation of oxide films on high purity iron at norrnal pressures and at temperatures below 300°C. Electron optical studies showed that the oxide film consisted of many individual oxide crystallites having nearly random orientation on each metal grain. The size of the oxide crystallites depended upon the temperature and upon the extent of oxidation. In these studies the crystallite size varied from 250 to 1800Å. Recently, Bardolle and Benard3 studied the crystal habit of the oxide crystallites formed on Armco iron between 650" and 850°C in what might be defined as a "poor vacuum" atmosphere in which the pressure could be varied between 10-1 to 10-3 mm of Hg. Their results showed that, at 850°C and a vacuum of l0-2 to 10-3 mm of Hg, a few well oriented nuclei of oxide were formed on the metal grains. At pressures between l0-1 to 10-2 mm of Hg, many oriented nuclei of oxide were formed. At 750°C the metal surface was bright although an oxide was present. Unfortunately, the extent of oxidation, the oxygen pressure, and the influence of carbon in the metal were not determined, and it was, therefore, impossible to give a theoretical interpretation to the very beautiful light micrographs. Bardolle and Benard used the light microscope to determine the crystal habit of the oxide and X-ray diffraction to determine the orientation relationships. It was believed that the use of controlled amounts of oxidation at high temperature is an important method for the study of the initial stages of oxidation of metals at high temperatures. This paper presents the first results of an electron optical study of this problem for iron. Since the electron microscope and electron-diffraction methods using stripped oxide films and surface replicas yielded finer details of the crystal habit and structure of oxide film, these methods were used in this study. Two types of iron having different carbon contents were used: Puron and Armco* iron. A com- parison of the results for these materials made possible a study of the influence of the surface oxide-carbon reaction on the initial stages of oxidation. Before discussing the experimental results, the thermodynamic equilibria of 1—the oxidation reaction, 2—the surface oxide-carbon reaction, and 3—the solubility of oxygen in iron, will be considered. In addition, it is important to consider the kinetic-theory predictions on the rate of collision of oxygen with the iron surface. Thermodynamic and Kinetic-Theory Calculations Only one type of reaction is usually considered in the oxidation of iron at normal pressures at high temperatures: Fe(a) + 1/2O2(g) = FeO(s) 3Fe(a) + 2O2(g) = Fe3O4(s) 2Fe(a) +3/2O2(g) = a-Fe2O3(s). [11 However, two other reactions may occur: FeO(s) + C (solid solution in Fe) + Fe(a) + CO(g) [2] and Fe(a) + O2(g) e Fe(a) (solid solution of 0,). COPPER In terms of mining activity, copper is the leading nonferrous metal. It is true that in recent years the volume of aluminum consumption in the non-Communist world has exceeded the volume of copper consumption, but virtually the entire primary aluminum supply is derived from bauxite. On the average, only four tons of bauxite need be mined to produce a ton of aluminum. By contrast, the highest-grade, large-scale copper mines now in operation (those in the Congo) must mine at least 20 tons of ore to produce a ton of copper. In the United States an average of 150 tons of ore must be mined to produce a ton of copper. This does not take into account the huge amounts of waste overburden that must be stripped from the open-pit mines to account for their steadily rising share of the world's copper output. Copper epitomizes the economic problems of the mining industry in many ways. Its price is highly volatile, considering its great economic importance. It has been a tool of mankind longer than any other of the base metals-the dawn of history has been classified as "The Bronze Age." World Copper Production Although copper is mined in many countries, in recent years 70% of the non-Communist world production has come from six countries. Two of these are industrialized countries and are large consumers-United States and Canada. The other four are developing countries with very small domestic requirements-Chile, Zambia, Zaire, and Peru. Heavily dependent on copper exports to sustain their domestic economies, these countries find themselves oscillating between prosperity and depression with the changing levels of copper prices. In an effort to control their own destiny, in 1968 they formed an organization of copper exporting countries (CIPEC) which was designed to study copper markets and possibly to intervene actively in these markets. (When this chapter was being prepared, no actual steps along such lines had been taken.) Many of the leading industrialized nations are wholly dependent on imports for their primary copper supplies. These include West Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and many others. Japan, now the non-Communist world's second largest copper consumer, produces only 10 to 15% of its requirements from domestic mines. Although the bulk of the copper output is smelted in the country where it is mined, there is a limited international trade in copper concentrates. Canada, the Philippines, Australia, and Papua-New Guinea are significant exporters of copper concentrates; Japan, Germany, the United States, and Sweden are importers. However, this trade accounted for only about 10% of the non-Communist world production of copper during the decade of the 1960s.

The use of ball, rod and tube mills for grinding ore, cement and other materials has grown so rapidly during the past forty years that the world's annual consumption of ferrous grinding media for these mills is now estimated to be between one half million and one million tons per year. Ferrous grinding balls constitute the major portion of this tonnage. Obviously they represent sufficient value to justify thorough studies of the factors governing their performance. The selection of grinding balls is governed principally by: I. Quality (wear resistance, impact resistance, soundness, and the like). 2. Sources of supply and delivered cost. 3. Grinding characteristics or efficiency in the ball mill. This paper deals principally with the quality of ferrous grinding balls. In the study of these factors certain data relative to the fundamental nature of ball wear in ball mills have been obtained. These data are also presented and discussed briefly. The Development of a Suitable Wear Test A study of the fundamental factors governing the quality of grinding balls has been hampered seriously by the fact that a competent test has, in the past, involved the purchase of several hundred tons of balls of a specific type which were then run in one or more ball mills for a period ranging from several months' to several years' duration. Often, during the period of test, it became necessary to change operating conditions or the character of the ore fed to the test mill with the result that the rate of ball consumption changed and the test figures became of little value. Under such circumstances, progress in the development of better grinding balls, has been necessarily slow. Economic factors and variations in the quality of balls produced by different sources of supply generally make it necessary for each mill operator to determine for himself the most suitable type of balls for his mills. In our own ball mill grinding operations at Climax, Colo., we were faced with this problem. After we had run a few large scale wear tests at considerable expense we decided to investigate the possibilities of a small scale wear test which would be capable of testing numerous types of balls within a relatively short time. The most important requirement of any test is, of course, that it give results which can be used to predict accurately the wear in full scale operations. It was known that Ellis and his associates1,2 had developed a method of testing grinding balls by small scale tests run at the Ontario Research Foundation. Ellis' method of testing was used as a starting point in our investigations. The senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallo-graphic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point As, at about 900° C, iron passes from the gamma condition to a new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transformation, however, is not instantaneous. There are good reasons for believing that it begins at the grain boundaries and along the octahedral planes of the crystals and that it progresses until each grain of gamma iron is changed into a grain of alpha iron, the resulting structure being similar to that of gamma iron. As a preliminary, consicleration is given to the conventional definition of relative permeability and to the conditions governing the simultaneous flow of oil and gas through porous media. For the conditions of flow prevailing throughout most of a gas drive reservoir, the oil and gas can reasonably be supposed to be in capillary equilibrium with each other. Under these conditions, and these conditions only, the relative permeability to liquid can be expressed as a function of saturation. The relative permeability to liquid in that case is dependent upon the distribution of fluids which itself is shown to be related to the capillary pressure, and, in turn, to the saturation. As a consequence, relative permeability to liquid can be expressed in terms of the volume and surface area of a network of liquid channels bounded by the rock and the gas phase. While the volume of this network can be evaluated accurately, the surface area cannot. However, for any such volume, maximum and minimum values of the corresponding surface area can be calculated from capillary pressure data. It is then possible to establish for any saturation the limits within which the value of the relative permeability to liquid must lie. As a consequence of the theoretical development, the validity of an experimental method for measuring relative permeability to liquid which utilizes a stationary gas phase is demonstrated. In this method capillary barriers are cemented to the ends of the core sample to permit the maintenance of capillary equilibrium between the two phases. At the same time, this procedure eliminates undesirable secondary phenomena such as end effects, fissure effects, etc., the presence of which adversely affect the results of other laboratory methods. The results obtained by theoretical calculations, and experimentally, are discussed. In view of the overall precision that can presently be obtained in reservoir calculations, the agreement between the calculated and measured relative permeability to liquid data can be considered satisfactory. In conclusion, for reasons of economy and simplicity, the procedure of calculating limiting relative permeability to liquid curves from capillary pressure data is indicated for general engineering purposes. It is shown that the above procedure can easily be extended to the cases where connate water is present. Its use for reservoir studies is particularly recommended in conjunction with the method for measuring relative permeability to gas' which simultaneously yields the capillary pressure data necessary for the calculations. In order to obtain a convenient basis of comparison, the effective permeabilities are referred to the specific permeability, k, of the considered porous medium, with the help of the relations: k1. = KI. k kQ = Kn k..........(2) K,. and Kr. are defined as the relative permeabilities to the liquid and to the gas phase respectively, and frequently expressed in per cent of specific permeability. It may be seen that Equations (1); which appear to be a direct generalization of Darcy's law, correspond to the assignment at any given time of a set of "local" permeabilities to each point of the porous medium, and represent in a differential form the two fluid flow system as a simple superposition of the individual single flow systems. During the war years of 1941 to 1945, maintenance of mine locomotives and other mine equipment took the form of rebuilding rather than of renewing. Purchase of new parts became increasingly difficult and mine operators found it necessary to maintain equipment by salvaging old parts. Mine-locomotive wheels, although not representing a high cost per pound of material, contain a considerable amount of steel and without rebuilding would have to be scrapped long before even a moderate percentage of the steel in the wheel is actually consumed. Many mine operators have been rebuilding locomotive wheels for several years with automatic open are-welding equipment. In 1927, the Pittsburgh Coal Co. started such a program, using a single Westinghouse automatic welding head. Since that time, many refinements have been added, until in 1944 the setup was operating very efficiently. A desire to increase wheel life and to hold down rising costs led the company in 1944 to investigate the possibilities of the under-flux are-welding process for wheel rebuilding, although at that time, little or no work had been done on multiple pass or "build-up" welding with the underflux arc. Work with this process had been confined largely to welding together flat plates in a "down hand" position. Possibilities for savings were intensified by the fact that the company has 300 locomotives in operation, using actively or as spares 1200 sets of wheels. During 1942 and 1943, about 500 sets of wheels were sent each year to the company's maintenance shop at Library, Pa., for rebuilding. Based on having 800 sets in service (many of the company's heavy locomotives have three sets of trucks), the average life of a set of wheels was approximately 19 months. Anything that could be done to increase wheel life promised sizable annual savings. Open Arc Welding With the open arc process, a set of wheels could be rebuilt for about 40 pet of the cost' of new wheels. During the war years of 1941 to 1945, maintenance of mine locomotives and other mine equipment took the form of rebuilding rather than of renewing. Purchase of new parts became increasingly difficult and mine operators found it necessary to maintain equipment by salvaging old parts. Mine-locomotive wheels, although not representing a high cost per pound of material, contain a considerable amount of steel and without rebuilding would have to be scrapped long before even a moderate percentage of the steel in the wheel is actually consumed. Many mine operators have been rebuilding locomotive wheels for several years with automatic open are-welding equipment. In 1927, the Pittsburgh Coal Co. started such a program, using a single Westinghouse automatic welding head. Since that time, many refinements have been added, until in 1944 the setup was operating very efficiently. A desire to increase wheel life and to hold down rising costs led the company in 1944 to investigate the possibilities of the under-flux are-welding process for wheel rebuilding, although at that time, little or no work had been done on multiple pass or "build-up" welding with the underflux arc. Work with this process had been confined largely to welding together flat plates in a "down hand" position. Possibilities for savings were intensified by the fact that the company has 300 locomotives in operation, using actively or as spares 1200 sets of wheels. During 1942 and 1943, about 500 sets of wheels were sent each year to the company's maintenance shop at Library, Pa., for rebuilding. Based on having 800 sets in service (many of the company's heavy locomotives have three sets of trucks), the average life of a set of wheels was approximately 19 months. Anything that could be done to increase wheel life promised sizable annual savings. Open Arc Welding With the open arc process, a set of wheels could be rebuilt for about 40 pet of the cost' of new wheels. A brief paper on this subject (which might readily be made to, fill a volume) is suggested at this time by several considerations, among which may he named the meeting of the Institute on the borders of Ontario, not far from some of the mining undertakings which are hereafter mentioned ; the mineral developments made in the Province quite recently ; the highly creditable collection of most of the minerals of Ontario, for the first time got together, and exhibited this year at Cincinnati, in the Centennial Exhibition of the Ohio Valley ; and, finally, the recent appointment, by the Government of Ontario, of a Commiesion to inquire into, and report upon the mineral resources of the Province, and the best means to be adopted for their development. The Province of Ontario has no Department of Mines or official geologist, to take note, and keep record, of mining and mineralogical development and discovery. Within the last few years some valuable statistics have been collected by Mr. A. Blue, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture; but recently a desire has risen on the part of the people to obtain further knowledge of these subjects, and the government has appointed a Commission, the report of which is expected to be issued in part, if not in completed form, this winter.

It is suggested that the binary alloy systems of transition metals may be classified into groups according to "excess energy"E. For systems with positive ?E, the Laves phase, the TiNi3-, the TiCu3- and the Cudu-type rich in the smaller atom and the TizNi-type rich in the larger atom may exist. For systems with negative ?E and composed of two components of different crystal structures, the X, the Cr3O and the phase may exist on the side of the phase digrattz rich in the component with the higher "solubility factor" value am! the Cudu-type and the disordered hcp phase on the other side; if the crystal structure of two components is the same, the Cudu-type may exist on both sides. For systems with weakly positive ?E and cotnposed of different crystal structures, the u phase and the MgCd3-type may replace the Laves phase and the other types; the X, the Cr3O and the a phase may also exist. Finally, the equirnolar compounds of the CuAu- and the CsC1-type may exist irrespective of the sign of ?E. THERE are many factors which play a major role in the formation of binary intermediate phases in alloys, such as the crystal structure, the electronic structure, the atomic size and the electrochemical factor. To find the simultaneous effects of all these factors on the formation of intermediate phases of every metal would be a difficult task, especially because only a small fraction of experimental facts necessary for the complete formulation is known at present. Thus the past surveys of intermediate phases have been usually confined to few metals, several types of intermediate phases and some but not all controlling factors. In a previous paper1 the idea of "solubility factor" of metals was introduced. Although the suggested values are tentative and empirical, the formation of a continuous series of solid solutions in metals could be correlated with the interplay among the atomic size factor, the solubility factor and the crystal structure factor. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate qualitatively the interplay of these factors in the formation of binary intermediate phases among transition metals. FACTORS CONSIDERED The Crystal Structure Factor. With rare earths excluded, the transition metals are classified into three common crystal structures listed in Table I. There is arbitrariness in the present classification of several allotropic elements. The idea of a portable crusher is not new. Many such crushers are available but they are small and designed for construction work. For many years the author has suggested, both in this country and in Europe, the building of larger portable crushers intended expressly for use in quarries or open pits. Although not applicable under all conditions, there are mining operations where a mobile crusher arrangement could be more profitable than the facilities now used. The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less expensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton-miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3, left). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks. Although power consumption for hauling on a grade increases for both conveyances, the rate of power consumption increases faster for trucks than for conveyor belts (Fig. 3, right). Since the output rate and related fixed costs are affected by the travel speed, total haulage costs with trucks would increase with the grade more rapidly than the similar costs of conveyor belts (Fig. 4). Travel distance, road grade, speed, size and number of pieces of equipment, efficiency of operation, and many other factors affect such haulage costs. In general terms it can be said that the shorter the distance, the steeper the grade, and the greater the output, the more advantageous the belt becomes in comparison to truck or track haulage. In addition to potential cost savings in haulage procedures, a portable crusher would allow better utilization and performance of shovels. Loading operations would not be interrupted as often by the necessity of waiting for cars or trucks. Unfortunately, the application of belts in open pits for haulage from bench sites is generally not practical under existing conditions because a belt fed directly by a mechanical shovel can be torn, damaged, or worn out quickly by the large rock fragments falling on it during loading. However, by using a mobile crusher this situation can be avoided. As shown in Fig. 1 (b), the shovel feeds rock into the crusher located behind it. The crushed material is initially transported by an extensible and/or movable belt, thence by a longer stationary conveyor to the plant where the material is subjected to further treatment by secondary crushing, screening, etc. The first-mentioned conveyor, needed to bridge the distance between the shovel and the stationary conveyor, is necessarily variable in length owing to the continuous movement of the shovel and the desire to keep the stationary belt at a safe distance from the bench during blasting operations. The remarkable part of mobile crusher operations is the extra-ordinarily high output per man-shift, the low maintenance and power requirements for haulage, and the increased output of the loading shovel. A cement quarry which has been using a portable crusher and conveyor since 1956 requires only three men to operate the shovel and crusher and to transport the crushed rock by belt from the quarry face to the screening plant. THE mines of the United States Coal & Coke Co. are located in the Pocahontas coal field, in McDowell County, West Virginia. Twelve plants have been opened and equipped, of which, by reason of the present business depression, only nine are now in operation. These twelve plants serve eighteen mines; some of the plants having several openings, in either the same seam or in different seams, tributary to the same tipple. Only nine of these mines are now being worked at the plants in operation. Construction work was begun in 1902, and coal from the first three plants started was shipped in December of that year. An additional plant was opened in 1903, two in 1904, two in 1905, two in 1907 and the last two in 1908. On Jan. 1, 1915, the plants have been in operation an average period of 8.8 years. The rules of the company, which have been in operation since work was first begun, are similar to those in use by the H. C. Frick Coke Co. at its mines in Pennsylvania, in which "Safety First" was incorporated as early as 1907; and it has always been the policy of both companies to look carefully after the safety of their employees. Although the field is an extension of the old Pocahontas field, the mines, located upon a new branch railroad, are away by themselves, and, as is usual in such cases, the class of labor attracted at first was temporary in character. The rapid development of the mines required the employment of many new men and officials each year; and, while the accident record from 1904 to 1909 was as good as the average of the field, it was felt to be not as good as it could be made, and a determined campaign was inaugurated for preventing accidents of all kinds. Fig. .1 shows the tonnage of coal produced per fatality, both total and for inside accidents only, at our mines; the tonnage per fatality of all West Virginia mines, and of those in the Pocahontas field.

IT is popular today to dramatize in a journalistic spirit, some particular factor among the causes of unemployment. Naturally the time chosen for such emphasis is usually when the factor in question is temporarily a particularly active one. A few months ago, in the unemployment then current, we saw largely the results of a healthy acceleration in changes in processes, greater efficiency, a more intensified use of labor-saving devices, perhaps also a change in products. So we have been hearing a great deal about the influence of mechanization on unemployment, the so-called technological unemployment. Many talk as if this kind of unemployment were a wholly new phenomenon, for- getting that it is a constant process in a growing industrialism, though it sometimes becomes more pronounced. At other times one would think that seasonal unemployment is the only type of unemployment, and then again the fashion changes and we hear .about nothing except cyclical unemployment. Every few years there seems to be a different fashion in labelling the germ supposed to be the cause of unemployment.
