THE late George S. Rice was active in the investigation of bumps, particularly in the last ten years of his career as chief mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Since most of his investigation was carried out in Great Britain, continental Europe, and-to a lesser extent-Canada, his thinking on prevention was influenced considerably by the experience of those countries. It is not surprising, therefore, that when he was called upon a few years before his retirement to investigate bumps in the U. S. and suggest ways to prevent them, he turned to longwall mining. A longwall method had been most successful in combating the bump hazard in mining coal under deep cover, especially in Great Britain, but the prevailing method there at the time was advancing longwall mining, which he knew was uneconomical under U. S. mining conditions. For this reason he proposed a modified retreating longwall system that he believed included the best features of the advancing method. As brought out by Rice,1 if the cover is 2000 ft and 50 pct of the coal is extracted, the static load on the remaining pillars will be about 4000 psi, which exceeds the ultimate crushing strength2 in most instances. If the pillar coal is overloaded before a pillar line is established, then the abutment zone preceding a line of extraction is no place to split pillars or extract them by any method other than an open-end system. Rice therefore advocated open-end mining, preferably by longwall, but he was willing to compromise with long-face mining if the longwall method was not acceptable.

In 1866, Thomas Graham1 called attention to the volume of gases, three times the volume of the sample, evolved from a meteoric iron heated in an evacuated porcelain tube. From that time to this the occurrence and significance of gases in metals have been the subject of investigation by many workers, among whom Sieverts,2 Iwasé3 and 0. W. Ellis4 stand preeminent. Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a number of gases in metals in the liquid and solid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases, and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metals. Ellis analyzed the gases evolved by solidifying copper and those occluded by the solidified metal. Lobley and Jepson5 endeavored to determine the effects of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on the porosity of copper that was allowed to solidify in the presence of each gas after 30 min. exposure to it in the

I had the good fortune to visit the Stockholm Exposition just before its close in October last, and to get a glimpse of the methods used in Sweden in making the wonderful steel and iron for which its furnaces are so famous. My time and opportunities for observation were limited, but some points which I noted may be worth bringing to the notice of the Institute. The Exposition itself was confined to the natural and artificial products of Scanclinavia, and therefore iron and steel held a very prominent place in it. There was a complete collection of the rocks and ores of the Peninsula made by the Geological Survey; and every iron-mine of note exhibited a glass model of its workings, as well as classified specimens, accompaniecl by thorough analyses of the ores. Another feature of interest was the display of models of the old mining-machinery, in the invention and introduction of which Sweden led the way, and of the old and new surveying-instruments and compasses devised for the exploration of the Swedish iron-ore bodies, all of which are more or less magnetic. The magnetometric collection and exhibit of methods of operation made by Prof. Nordestrijm were supremely instructive. The larger metallurgical works, such as those of the Kopparberg and Sandvik companies, exhibited their wares in separate pavilions, in which crude and manufactured objects were arranged most eflectively and tastefully; while the smaller companies erected in the Industrial Arts Building trophies, every one of which was an object of beauty. One was struck on all sides by the fine asthetic feeling exhibited in the ingenious installation of materials and objects not easily lending themselves to artistic treatment. Hammers, picks and drill-steel were grouped into mural designs which it was a delight to look at.

This paper presents a method for obtaining the correct values of the breakthrough sweep efficiency of the staggered line drive, taking into account the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. Results obtained were different from those previously published, which were obtained by using an inexact shape of the breakrhrough streamline. INTRODUCTION In Section 9.31 of Muskat's' The Flow of Hotnogeticous Fluids Through Porous Media, it is stated that in a staggered line drive flood "the streamline of highest average velocity [is] the line of centers between input and output wells" (see Fig. I). Muskat used this concept to determine the relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the geometry of the staggered line drive pattern. Although it is clear from symmetry considerations that the breakthrough streamline passes through the midpoint between input and output wells, it is equally clear, as shown in Fig. 239 of Ref. 1, that the breakthrough streamline is not represented very well by the straight line joining the input and output wells. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the proper relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the pattern geometry by using the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. METHOD OF SOLUTION It was found that the effect of the geometry of the staggered line drive on the breakthrough sweep efficiency can be investigated easily by making use of the method developed in Ref. 2. With this method, it can be shown that the general complex potential for the staggered line drive, which can be considered as a rectangular five-spot, is given in the coordinate system of Fig. 1, by O(z) = In cn(z\m) = +(x,y) + i $(x, y) . (1) where z = x + iy, +(x, y) is the potential distribution and $(x, y) is the stream function. The function cn (zm) is a Jacobian elliptic function of parameter m and has simple zeros at z,. = (2n + 1) K + 21iK and simple poles at z, = 2nK + (21 + 1)iK. Thus, the complex potential behaves like a(z) = ln(z - zr.) in the neighborhood of the production wells and behaves like a(z) = - ln(z - Z,) in the neighborhood of the injection wells. Since (z - z1.v) = rll.ei, we note that the potential + has the proper logarithmic behavior near the two wells, while the stream function $ varies with the angle, decreasing clockwise around the production well and increasing clockwise around the injection well. The functions K(m) and K'(tn), related by K(m) = K'(m,), where m + m, = 1, are known as the complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. By use of other properties of the Jacobian elliptic functions, the general stream function distribution for the staggered line drive can be obtained from Eq. 1: From the Jacobian elliptic function values, sn(0lm) = 0 dn(O(m) = cn(0jm) = 1, and f[K'(m)Iml = 03, it follows that the stream function given by Eq. 2 satisfies the proper symmetry conditions near a production well P located at [K(m), 01 and an injection well I located at [0, K' (m)]. That is, the line IOP in Fig. 1 is a streamline with value G (0. 0) = -0. and the straight lines connecting I and P to the point [K(m), K' (m)] is a streamline of value $[K(m), K' (m)] = -7/2. Similar symmetry conditions are obtained near other wells. It should be nuled that for m = m1, = 0.5, Eq. 2 reduces to the stream function distribution of the regular five-spot given in Ref. 7. SHAPE OF THE BREAKTHROUGH STREAMLINE It is apparent, from symmetry considerations, that the breakthrough streamline ($,) passes through the point [K(m)/2, K' (m)/2]. AMONG mining men as well as in the popular mind the conviction has held sway that mining is pre-eminently a western industry. True it is that gold, silver, copper and other metals have made the States of California, Colorado, Montana, Utah. Nevada and Arizona famous. The prominence attained by these States as mineral producers is, however, not measured alone by the money value of the products of their mines. While the metals are without doubt indispensable in industry, the glamour of the precious metals, and the lure of copper, lead and zinc have given to their ore deposits a sentimental interest that often quite out-weighs their commercial importance. Today a great group of more commonplace minerals are finding a place in commerce and industry rivaling that of the metals, but there is little sentiment attached to them, and,. therefore, they attain relatively little publicity. This is the great group of the non-metallic minerals, exclusive of fuels and oils, including stone, sand and gravel, cement, lime, gypsum, asbestos, mica, phos-phate rock and many others. Almost unnoticed they have grown in production to almost unbelievable pro-portions. The estimated value of metal production for 1925 is given as $1,380,000,000, of the non-metals (ex-cluding fuels) $1,294,000,000. The non-metallic industries are not new, many of them date back almost to pre-historic times; but, as the greatest of them (on a tonnage basis) provides raw materials for the construction industries, it required the activities of the present age of construction to bring about their enormous development. Many of them enter manufacturing as well as con-struction. Non-metallic minerals constitute the back-bone of our great chemical industries. While construction and manufacture reach to all parts of the country their widest development has been in the great industrial centers of the eastern Seaboard and the middle West. Consequently the raw materials of mineral origin required for these great industries have attained a remarkable growth in the eastern half of the- United States. In compiling figures of mineral production for 1924, for which more complete data are available than for later years, the surprising fact is brought to light that the non-metallic mineral produc-tion alone of some of the eastern and middle-western States exceeds by a substantial margin the total min-eral production of some of the western States that have been classed as essentially mining States. Thus the non-metallic mineral production, exclusive of coal and petroleum, of the State of Ohio, was approximately $150,000,000; of Pennsylvania $175,000,000; and of New York $107,000,000. For the same year, 1924, the total mineral production of Utah was $84,357,000; of Montana $70,632,000; of Colorado $61,488,000; and of Nevada only $26,226,000. Even Minnesota, with its enormous iron ore production, reached only $107,845,-000, or a sum about equivalent to the non-metallic min-eral production of the State of New York.

Wilshire SEVERAL recent investigations1-6 have shown that the strain, c, during transient and steady-state creep is well-represented by the expression: € = e0 + et(l - e-mt) + Esl [l] where Eo is the instantaneous strain on loading, ET the total transient strain, C, the steady creep rate! and m a constant relating to the rate of exhaustion of transient creep. However, it has been noted6 that deviations from this equation occur over the first 10 to 15 pct of the transient stage, when the creep rate, (. decreases more rapidly than is predicted by this equation. This rapid decrease has been attributed to a large change in work-hardening coefficient. It 1s widely accepted that steady-state creep results from a balance between the rate of strain hardcning h and the rate of recovery r (=-s(st) as: dE/dt = Es = r/h [2] Comparison of values obtained for h at the end of the initial extension and during steady creep suggests that h increases several fold during the transient stage. which has the effect of reducing the creep rate proportionally.7 To examine the dependence, on r and h, of the deformation behavior during transient and steady-state creep. a series of constant-stress creep tests was carried out at 413°C at 6000 psi using 70-30 a brass. Prelinlinary investigation showed that. with this material. the transient stage constituted a significant portion of the total creep life (-0.4tf. where tf is the time to fracture). The alloy. obtained from Metals Research Limited. was made from high-purity copper, 99.999 pct. and zinc. 99.99 pct. Heat treatment at 675°C for 4 1/2 gave a uniform grain size of 5 mm-1. Details of specimen preparation and creep testing procedures have been given previously.6 Values of h (?s/?E) were determined by measuring the instantaneous strain. ?E. which occurred on increasing the stress during creep by a small amount. ?s. Similarly. v (= -?s/ ?t) was derived from the incubation period. At, after a small decrease in stress.' Several values of v and h were obtained throughout duplicate creep tests. using different stress increments in the range 300 to 800 psi. The accuracy with which Eq. [I] represents the present creep curves was established by determining the best value of the constants Es, Et, m , and 6, using a digital computer program based essentially on the graphical solution for this equation devised by Conway and Mullikan.9 About 40 strain/time readings were taken during transient and steady-state creep. Over most of the creep curve, the average difference between the measured reading and the calculated strain at the appropriate time was less than 0.0001. However.

During the past ten years, the Calumet Div. of Calumet & Hecla, Inc. has conducted extensive exploration and mining in the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid lode in the native copper district in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In an attempt to delineate more clearly the extent and nature of high-grade footwall copper mineralization, 876 diamond drill and long steel holes aggregating slightly more than 47,000 ft have thus far been drilled from the accessible hanging-wall workings. Early in this program it became obvious, through inspection of footwall workings in progress, that due to the erratic and bunchy occurrence of the native copper in the footwall zone, the exploration drilling was failing to outline completely the extent of the oreshoots. Early drilling results indicated isolated pockets of ore whereas in actual practice the footwall was found to be fairly thoroughly mineralized in shoots within the ore zone. Based on drill results only, the "success factor" (discovery ratio) was only 34%.

Dynamic measurements of Young's modulus have been made for poly crystalline Ni-W alloys from room temperature to 800°C. The alloys studied range in composition from pure nickel to Ni-10 at. pct W. The results indicate that Young's modulus decreases linearly with temperature above the Curie temperature. The rate of change of Young's Modulus with temperature mas found to range from 104 psi per "C for pure nickel to 0.82 x 104 psi per °C for Mi-10 pct W. At all temperatures the elastic modulus decreases with increcrsing tungsten content up to 1 at. pct W, and increases as the tungsten content is increased above that level. Young's modulus decreases slightly as the carbon content is increased from 0.002 to 0.09 wt pct C THE knowledge of the elastic modulus of metals and alloys is important for a number of reasons. The first and most obvious reason comes from the need to predict elastic deflections under given loading conditions. A second and somewhat more subtle reason comes from the fact that the elastic properties of an alloy must be known before a proper account of the mechanisms of plastic deformation can be made. This is especially true for high-temperature creep of crystalline solids. Sherby and his coworkers have shown that the high-temperature steady-state creep rates of crystalline solids are inversely related to the elastic modulus1,2 and that the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus must be taken into account if reliable determinations of the activation energy for creep are to be made. In addition, measurements of the elastic constants of solid solutions are needed to allow one to assess the modulus interaction contribution to solid-solution Strengthening.3-5 Pelloux and Grant6 have demonstrated that substantial solid-solution strengthening at room temperature and elevated temperatures occurs when refractory metal solute atoms are added to nickel. While the high-temperature elastic properties of pure nickel have been measured by a number of authors,7-10 the elastic properties of nickel-based refractory metal alloys have not been determined. The purpose of this paper is to report on measurements of Young's modulus of polycrystalline Ni-W alloys at elevated temperatures. It is expected that these measurements will be valuable to studies of the mechanical properties of nickel-based refractory metal solid solutions. I) EXPERIMENTAL Young's moduli of polycrystalline samples were determined by a dynamic method in order to reduce high- temperature anelastic and plastic relaxations. The samples were forced in transverse free-free vibration; that is, both ends of the sample were unrestrained and the vibration was transverse to the long axis. The fundamental resonant frequency was determined by the Forster method.11 The analysis of this type of vibration which was formulated by Rayleigh,12 Timo-chenko,13 and pickett,14 and reviewed by Fine," leads where fn is the resonant frequency of the nth mode, r is the radius of the circular cross section. L is the specimen length, ßn is 1.5056 for free-free vibration in the fundamental mode of vibration, 6 is the mass density, and E is Young's modulus in the axial direction. This equation can be transformed into: E = 9.17605 x 10-6(L/D)E/Lf2 [2] where E is Young's modulus in psi, L is the length in inches, d is the diameter in inches, W is the weight in grams, and f is the resonance frequency in cps. Eq. [2] was further modified in order to take account of the thermal expansion of the samples. The resulting correct term is: where the thermal expansion coefficients for nickel and tungsten, respectively. Xw is the atom fraction of tungsten in the sample and T is the temperature in "C. The treatment of the thermal expansion coefficient as a linear function of composition seems sufficiently accurate since an error of 25 pct in the expansion coefficient will result in only a 0.3 pct error in the modulus at 1000°C. A) Apparatus. The equipment for this investigation has been described by Lytton et al.16 Several modifications of the equipment have been made. The most significant change involved replacing the detector crystal transducer with a magnetic transducer. A phonographic magnetic transducer was employed as a sensing device since the contact pressure necessary to produce a stable signal is much less than that for a crystal transducer. This magnetic transducer is also not affected by conditions of high temperature and vacuum which are present in these experiments. The vacuum was 10-5 torr at room temperature and about 5 x 10-4 torr at 900°C. This was sufficient to prevent surface contamination of the samples during the tests. The samples were heated in an elliptical furnace with a quartz lamp at one focal line and the sample at the other, as described by Lytton et a1.16 The temperature of the sample was measured by monitoring the

AT the outset, said Mr. Guess, I may say that although I believe the present engineering courses in the various colleges and universities could be arranged to give the student within the same time limit a broader general education of un- doubted value, still I do not agree with the view held by many that engineers in comparison with those of other occupations-let us say doctors, lawyers, bankers, and so-called business men-seldom arrive at high executive positions. After all, we must remember that engineers are not very numerous as compared with the occupations just mentioned and therefore a lesser number reaching high executive positions stated numerically might be a larger number stated as a percentage. We all know there must be throughout the United States say three doctors to one engineer, but I don't think that even numerically there are as many doctors in high executive positions as engineers, and it is a fortunate thing for the country that doctors as a class are so busily engaged in alleviating sickness and suffering and in the advancement of medical science that they do not aim particularly for high executive positions.

A number of unique thickener mechanism designs with the operating results achieved in various installations are discussed. These unusual designs include new types of raking arms, lifting devices, and feed-wells employed to obtain higher underflow densities and minimum operator control or improved overflow clarity. Several installations of large thickeners in which the underflow lines pass upward through the center to eliminate tunnels are reviewed. The location of the lines and pumps with the maintenance and operating records are included. Several types of automatic lifting device controls are used to provide storage in the thickener. Some of the installations employing underflow density controls are achieving excellent operating results. Thickeners or sedimentation basins are used in minerals beneficiation plants for three basic purposes. These are 1) Concentration, or to raise the density of a liquid-solids slurry. 2) Clarification, or removal of finely divided solids from a slurry. 3) Hydroseparation, or removal of a specific fraction of solids from a slurry. The concepts that control the size and configuration of basins used for these purposes are different. Likewise, different equipment is properly employed to accomplish these various objectives. The pattern of liquid and solids flow in the clarification zone of a sedimentation basin used for thickening or raising the density of a pulp normally is not critical. That is, the solids normally will drop or plunge to the bottom quite readily, and the liquid separates itself from these solids so as to overflow the basin in a relatively clear condition. When clarification or removal of finely divided particles is to be accomplished, the flow patterns in the basin are extremely important. The velocity of the incoming stream must be dissipated and the liquid flow distributed ]In the tank so that the feed is not divided into streams that flow directly to the overflow carrying the fine:ly divided solids that are to be removed. Similarly, the configuration of the arms that provide the raking and thickening of the pulp is not as important in basins primarily devoted to clarification. In thickening, the design of the arms and the manner in which the pulp is moved or worked, can contribute appreciably to the thickening process and achievement of a higher density underflow. THICKENING As the grade oi ore bodies throughout the world generally decreases, and chemical processes, hydro-metallurgy, and other more refined methods of minerals beneficiation are required, problems in thickening become more acute. Difficult operating conditions, previously encountered only occasionally in thickening metallurgical slurries, or clarifying process streams in the mill, are now the rule rather than the exception. Fig. 1 illustrates some of the different types of raking arms that are successfully achieving the desired goals in pulp thickening. The conventional raking arms consist of a relatively simple truss with the blades attached to the bottom chords. This design provides proper Concentration of many 'normal' slurries. It is now generally recognized that diffusion data and theories are needed for multicomponent systems, where extensive practical developments and even some theoretical studies have already been made. For example, much recent work on precipitation from solid solution has been concerned with ternary solid solutions such as A-M-Z' while Zener relaxation has been studied on Au-Ag-Zn alloys,' although adequate diffusion data are available for neither of these systems. Actually, the only ternary systems for which systematic diffusion studies have been begun, in addi- tion to the one reported here, are CO-i-cr3 and Cu-A-Au. Since the theory of multicomponent diffusion is still in the stage of active development5 it is important to distinguish the various kinds of diffusion data that can be determined. An oversimplified approach, widely used prior to 1950, was to determine the influence of a third element, such as nickel, on the diffusion behavior of a binary alloy, such as CU-Z. Later it was recognized7 that four diffusion coefficients can be used to describe ordinary interdiffusion in a ternary system, while as many as six coefficients may be required to include the Kirkendall effect. It is likely that the number of independent coefficients will be shown to be less than four and six, respectively, through the application of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.5 The simplest type of diffusion in a multicomponent system is tracer diffusion, since each component is characterized by its own tracer-diffusion coefficient in an alloy of a given composition. Thus, in a ternary alloy there are three tracer-diffusion coefficients, each a function of composition and temperature. The present research program is a study of tracer diffusion in the copper corner of the Cu-Ni-Zn system out to 30 at. pct each of Ni and Zn in a 150°C range of temperature just below the solidus temperature. Graphite is the hexagonal form of crystal-line carbon. It is found in nature locally as tabular crystals but occurs mostly as disseminated flakes, foliated, platy, or fibrous masses, or microcrystalline compact to earthy material. Graphite is characterized by its gray to black color, metallic luster, black streak, perfect basal cleavage, softness (H = 1-2) and unctuous feel. It is sectile and flexible and has a specific gravity of 2.1 to 2.3. It is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity and is inert to ordinary chemical reagents. It melts at a temperature of about 3500°C and vaporizes at a temperature of about 4500°C. In the presence of oxygen it oxidizes to CO2 in the temperature range 600° to 700°C, but it is stable at ordinary temperature and markedly resistant to chemical weathering. Although some natural graphite is nearly 100 pct pure carbon, most contains mechanical impurities of various kinds; quartz, biotite, muscovite, pyrite, iron oxides, and feldspars are the most common. Commercial graphite products have a wide range of graphite content, but the better grades contain 80 pct graphite or more. Both natural and manufactured (artificial) graphite are used in industry. Natural graphite products are divided into two broad categories based on grain size. Graphite composed of visible crystals is called "crystalline" graphite, whereas graphite so fine-grained that it is not visibly crystalline is termed "amorphous." The distinction is arbitrary, for all natural graphite is crystalline, and all gradations between the two commercial categories are known. Within the two categories the terminology used in industry is confusing and not entirely consistent. Crystalline graphite comes from two principal types of sources. The first consists of rocks containing disseminated flakes of graphite. This source yields the "flake graphite" of industry. The second comprises vein deposits of graphite, of which those in Ceylon are the most important and furnish the Ceylon graphite of industry. Amorphous graphite comes from any of a variety of sources, including some of those that yield crystalline graphite. Manufactured graphite is made by electric furnace processes, mostly from petroleum coke. Occurrence and Distribution of Graphite Deposits GENERAL Graphite is widely distributed in nature, occurring in igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, and even in nickel-iron meteorites. Graphite deposits of economic interest, however, occur mostly in metamorphic terranes. Five principal geologic types of deposits are recognized: 1. Deposits consisting of flake graphite disseminated in metamorphosed siliceous sediments. 2. Deposits consisting of flake graphite disseminated in marbles. 3. Deposits formed by thermal or dynamothermal metamorphism of coal or other highly carbonaceous sediments. 4. Vein deposits of the Ceylon type. 5. The increasing use of mechanization at the face of the workings in coal mining and the consequent necessity of special supports of the roof has led, in several countries, to considerable scientific investigation, including physical tests in mines as well as on specimens of roof rocks to obtain data on the behavior of the immediate roof strata and on the effect of its pressure on supports while the coal is being mined. The investigations discussed in this paper do not include studies of the ultimate effect of subsidence and movement of the roof rock over the mine excavation, upon higher strata and the surface, but are confined to the immediate underground effects in the workings. The more recent principal investigations which have been brought to the attention of the writer are as follows: Germany.—The trial of strip packing, the usual method employed in Great Britain in longwall workings, as compared with complete packing heretofore used in Germany and in France to minimize subsidence; the behavior and strength of metal props under load; the testing of the strength of coal measure rocks, in the laboratory of the Technical High School of Breslau; and an investigation, by a special commission, concerning "bumps" as a possible cause of instantaneous outbursts of gas in coal mines of Lower Silesia. France.—The cause of instantaneous outbursts of gas in the Gard mines and tests by the official French experimental organization of the "electrical resistivity" of coal as a possible means of detecting a condition preceding an instantaneous outburst. In January, 1964, three years of laboratory and pilot plant test work reached its culmination. The San Manuel Div. of the Magma Copper Co. switched its molybdenite extraction circuit from the sodium hypochlorite-ferrocyanide process to the new process described in this paper. The San Manuel Div. Concentrator of the Magma Copper Co. is located near San Manuel, Ariz., approximately 45 miles northeast of Tucson. The concentrator treats approximately 35,000 tons of ore per day containing about 0.85% copper and 0.025% molybdenite. The San Manuel ore body is a disseminated copper deposit in quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. The primary copper mineral is chalcopyrite; minor amounts of chalcocite, bornite and covellite are also present in varying degrees. Pyrite makes up somewhat more than half the sulfide content of the rock. The molybdenite is nearly always found on fracture faces or associated with quartz veinlets.' On January 9, 1964, the sodium hypochlorite-ferrocyanide process that had been used for molybdenite recovery was replaced by the following process: 1) A conditioning step with hydrogen peroxide, sulfuric acid, sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate. 2) A two stage rougher flotation step with stove oil and sodium ferrocyanide. 3) One cleaning step with sodium ferrocyanide. 4) One cleaning step with sodium hypochlorite and potassium ferricyanide. 5) Four cleaning steps with an anti-foam Exfoam 636 and potassium ferricyanide. COPPER CONCENTRATOR Since molybdenite recovery is closely allied with previous steps in the operation, the copper concentrator will be briefly described first. The ore is ground to approximately 5% plus 65-mesh and 65% minus 200-mesh in a two-step grinding circuit consisting of rod mills in open circuit and ball mills in closed circuit with rake classifiers. A straight forward rougher circuit producing only one concentrate is used. The rougher concentrate is combined with the discharge from the regrind ball mills and is then cycloned, with the overflow going directly to the cleaner circuit and the underflow going to the regrind mills. The feed to the cleaner circuit is approximately 90% to 94% minus 325 mesh. The cleaner circuit consists of two stages in which the tailing from the final cleaner stage is returned to the primary cleaner and the primary cleaner tailing is returned to the rod mill discharge at the head of the circuit. Approximately 0.013 lb of the allyl ester of amyl xanthate (S-3302) per ton of ore is added to the rod mills and approximately 0.006 lb of sodium isopropyl xanthate (2-11) per ton of ore is stage added down the rougher banks. The frother used is methyl iso-butyl carbinol (MIBC) and it is added at various points in the grinding and the rougher flotation circuits. Lime is added to the ball mills and/or to the rod mills to maintain the desired pH in the rougher flotation. The rougher flotation has been operated at various pH levels between 10.5 and 11.5. Fuel oil is added in the regrind mills at a loading of approximately 0.01 lb per ton of ore. Factors Which Directly Affect Molybdenite Recovery: It has been found at San Manuel that, to obtain maximum molybdenite recovery, an oily type flotation collector must be added in the grinding circuit. When molybdenite is crystallized in the characteristic platy form, which appears to be the case almost all of the time at San Manuel, its surface has a greater tendency to adhere to oils than water. 2 Of the several oily type collectors available on the market, the allyl ester of amyl xanthate seems to be the best molybdenite promoter. The floatability of San Manuel's molybdenite does not appear to be affected, at least up to a pH of 11.5, by lime. It has been reported that at several plant operations high lime alkaline circuits have adversely affected the molybdenite recovery.3,4 It has been found through microscopic studies that the bulk of the chalcopyrite will float before the molybdenite in both the rougher and cleaner circuits. Magnetic separation occupies an attractive position in the field of ore beneficiation. It is a simple yet effective method, used for some 150 years and steadily growing more important. This type of beneficiation orginated in 1792, when William Fullarton was issued a British patent covering the separation of iron ore by magnetic attraction. What is magnetism, and why are some materials capable of being magnetized and others not? The study involves many unknowns, and even a partial answer to these questions would be a dissertation in solid state physics and perhaps other fields of science. But the last two decades have revealed basic facts as to why certain materials are magnetic and what happens to them when they are magnetized.

The effect of variations of pressure-dependent viscosity and gas law deviation factor on the flow of real gases through porous media has been considered. A rigorous gas flow equation was developed which is a second order, non-linear partial differential equation with variable coeficients. This equation was reduced by a change of variable to a form similar to the diffusivity equation, but with potential-dependent diffusivity. The change of variable can be used as a new pseudo-pressure for gas flow which replaces pressure or pressure-squared as currently applied to gas flow. Substitution of the real gas pseudo-pressure has a nrtmber of important consequences. First, second degree pressure gradient terms which have commonly been neglected under the assumption that the pressure gradient is small everywhere in the flow system, are rigorously handled. Omission of second degree terms leads to verious errors in estimated pressure distributions for tight formations. Second, flow equations in terms of the real gas pseudo-pressure do not contain viscosity or gas law deviation factors, and thus avoid the need for selection of an average pressure to evaluate physical properties. Third, the real gas pseudo-pressure can be determined numerically in term of pseudo-reduced pressures and temperatures from existing physical property correlations to provide generally useful information. The real gas pseudo-pressure was determined by numerical integration and is presented in both tabular and graphical form in this paper. Finally, production of real gas can be correlated in terms of the real gas pseudo-pressure and shown to be similar to liquid flow as described by diffusivity equation solutions. Applications of the real gas pseudo-pressnre to radial flow systems under transient, steady-state or approximate pseudo-steady-state injection or production have been considered. Superposition of the linearized real gas flow solutions to generate variable rate performance was investigated and found satisfactory. This provides justification for pressure build-up testing. It is believed that the concept of the real gas pseudo-pressure will lead to improved interpretation of results of current gas well testing procedures, both steady and unsteady-state in nature, and improved forecasting of gas production. INTRODUCTION In recent years a considerable effort has been directed to the theory of isothermal flow of gases through porous media. The present state of knowledge is far from being fully developed. The difficulty lies in the non-linearity of partial differential equations which describe both real and ideal gas flow. Solutions which are available are approximate analytical solutions, graphical solutions, analogue solutions and numerical solutions. The earliest attempt to solve this problem involved the method of successions of steady states proposed by Muskat.' Approximate analytical solutions' were obtained by linearizing the flow equation for ideal gas to yield a diffusivity-type equation. Such solutions, though widely used and easy to apply to engineering problems, are of limited value bemuse of idealized assumptions and restrictions imposed upon the flow equation. The validity of linearized equations and the conditions under which their solutions apply have not been fully discussed in the literature. Approximate solutions are those of Heatherington et al.. MacRobertsl and Janicek and Katz.' A graphical solution of the linearized equation was given by Cornell and Katz. Also, by using the mean value of the time derivative in the flow equation, Rowan and Clegg' gave several simple approximate solutions. All the solutions were obtained assuming small pressure gradients and constant gas properties. Variation of gas properties with pressure has been neglected because of analytic difficulties. even in approximate analytic solutions. Green and Wilts8 used an electrical network for simulating one-dimensional flow of an ideal gas. Numerical methods using finite difference equations and digital computing techniques have been used extensively for solving both ideal and real gas equations. Aronofsky and Jenkins"I " and Bruce et al.11 gave numerical solutions for linear and radial gas flow. Douglas et al." gave a solution for a square drainage area. Aronofsky 13 included the effect of slippage on ideal gas flow. The most important contribution to the theory of flow of ideal gases through porous media was the conclusion reached by Aronofsky and Jenkins" that solutions for the liquid flow case'" could be used to generate approximate solutions for constant rate production of ideal gases. An equation describing the flow of real gases has been solved for special cases by a number of investigators using numerical methods. Aronofsky and Ferris 10 onsidered linear flow, while Aronofsky and Porter 17 considered radial gas flow. Gas properties were permitted to vary as linear functions of pressure. PETROLEUM is found in almost every province in Persia. On the northern frontier, along the southern shore of the Caspian Sea, it is found near Anzelli and Shakhtesar and gas at Khoremabad. Oil is also found at Gumush Tepe, northwest of Astrabad, on the southeastern shore of the Caspian Sea. Further inland, to the south of Astrabad, oil is found at Schahkuh-i-balae, also on the margin of the Khorasan desert at Semnan, 115 mi. (35 m.) east of Teheran. Along the western frontier, from northwest to southeast, oil is encountered at Ouschachi, north of Lake Urumieh; in the province of Azerbaijan, at Zohab, Khanikin, and other places in the district of Kormanshah in the province, of Ardelan. Further south, in the province of Luristan, oil is found east of Mendeli and in the Pusht-i-kuh districts. Considerable quantities of oil are also obtained from Schuster, Maidan-i-Naphtun, Ram-Hormuz, Beheban, which are almost on a straight line, running northwest and southeast along the foothills of the Bakhtiari Mountains. At Ahwaz, in the province of Arabistan, oil has been found along another range of hills whose axis also lies in a northwest-southeast direction. In the Fars province, boring for oil has taken place at Daliki, and indications of oil are found at Kheri, Fasa, Darab, and other places. A gas show is also recorded at Kuhi-Sung-Atush in this province, 30 mi. (48 km.) east of Darab. In the south of Persia, oil is encountered on. Qishm Island, also at Ahmedi and other places north of Bunder Abbas. On the southeastern frontier, oil is found on the Sarhad range of hills. Thus, oil indications have been noted over a distance of approximately 1100 mi. along the western and 700 mi. along the northern frontiers of Persia.

In studying the possibilities of a continuously recording magnetometer for use along the surface of the earth and in an airplane, the Federal Bureau of Mines was led to a study of the theoretical resolving power of magnetic observations, both in the variation of the total magnetic intensity and in each of the two cornponents ordinarily measured. Along with this general study, an attempt was made to determine the relative worth of the total intensity anomaly and the vertical anomaly in geophysical prospecting. Genera1 considerations led to three conclusions: I. In the northern magnetic hemisphere of the earth, the total intensity anomaly is offset to the south of the vertical anomaly, for a positive anomaly (see Appendix, note 1). 2. The resolving power of magnetic observations decreases rapidly with distance from the disturbing body. 3. The horizontal anomaly has little value in prediction of the disturbing body but might be useful in making a choice between bodies suggested by the vertical or total anomaly. Some of the considerations leading to these conclusions were: I. The normal intensity and the anomalous intensity are vectorially additive; hence for a positive anomaly in the northern magnetic hemisphere the total intensity will be a maximum at some point south of the disturbing body and north of the point at which the line to the disturbing body is parallel to the normal earth's field. The anomaly itself has a maximum value directly above the body. For a positive anomaly of constant magnitude, the total intensity will be a maximum when the anomaly vector is parallel to the normal vector. This is shown schematically in Fig. I (not to scale) for a magnetic distribution not restricted to a relatively thin sheet in the magnetic meridian. The normal field has a magnitude 10 with vertical component V0 and horizontal component Ho. Six station points along a traverse across the body from south to north are shown at M to S. At each of these stations the normal magnetic field vector terminates at F. At each of these stations the magnetic field vector due to the disturbing body B terminates at A. The line through the station point and the point A passes through B. The magnitude of the anomaly, indicated by the length of the vector terminating at A, is proportional to some power of the distance from the station point to the disturbing body. If the disturbing body B is a concentrated point of magnetic material, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse second power of the distance. For a uniform magnetic distribution over a line perpendicular to the observed traverse, the anomaly is proportional to the inverse first power of the distance.
