It is of importance to analysts to have a ready means of detecting the presence of small quantities of titaninm in iron ores and in certain fluxes and slags. The method given in Elderhorst's Blowpipe Analysis (fusion with potassium hydrogen sulphate) requires considerable practice, in order so to regulate the heat that the titanium oxide shall become soluble. In Brash's Determinative Mineralogy is found a method which, at least in inexperienced hands, has given better results, i. e., fusion of the substance to be tested with sodium carbonate on charcoal in the reducing flame. The solution in hydrochloric acid of the bead thus obtained, boiled with tin or zinc, gives the characteristic violet color; but when the mineral contains less than four per cent. of titanium oxide, long boiling and consequent concentration is necessary. In fact the test would seem to be much less delicate than is generally supposed. In the course of some analyses I quite accidentally found that a peculiar color is given to turmeric paper by solutions of titanium chloride. This color is hard to describe, being modified by the quantity of ferric chloride present in the solution ; but it is neither the orange of zirconia nor the red of' boron. It is rather a dull shade of purple, arid is easily recognized when the paper is dried, although the color fades in a few hours. By this means a solution containing .015 per cent. of titanium oxide can easily be tested. The same solution, treated with tin, required to be concentrated to one-tenth its bulk before a decided color could be obtained. The color given to turmeric paper is intensified after the solution has been treated with tin. This and some other indications show that the best shade of color is given by the titanons chloride rather than by the titanic chloride, and no other salt of titanium than the chloride has been found to give the color. Another peculiar property of titanium salts has come tinder my observation. When titaniferous minerals are soluble in nitric acid, and the solution is subjected to the action of the battery, the soluble titanium salt is converted into the insoluble oxide and appears on the electrode, in some cases, as a white coating; this

Earlier studies of the mechanism of flotation showed that coal flotation products are contaminated by composite coal and mineral particles. The mineral matter of these particles has the dual effect of increasing the specific gravity and decreasing the coal surface of the particle available for bubble attachment. The present study showed that these particles are more loosely held in the froth column than the high grade coal particles, especially in the coarser sizes. Consequently, it is possible in the laboratory to produce a secondary concentration of the product by sprinkling the froth product with water to wash these loosely held particles from the froth during formation and recovery. To improve coal flotation, Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s research department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies1 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the basis for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14 mesh x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level. These principles and findings, together with work by Professor V. I. Klassen,' led to the froth sprinkling investigation reported in this paper. Working with Russian coals, Klassen had shown that froth sprinkling washes loosely held refuse particles from the froth and compensates for the water lost in the upper froth layers and increases its stability. As a result, the coal particles are retained in the froth and the loss of coarse coal from the froth is prevented. Decreases in ash of 0.1% to 1.5% were reported by Klassen. Working with a 28 mesh x 0 American coal, the author of the present paper found that single-stage flotation coupled with froth sprinkling produced a product comparable to that obtained by the more expensive method of roughing and cleaning.3 The investigation reported in the present paper expanded study of the effect of froth sprinkling to include each of the standard size fractions of a bituminous coal. The main findings are as follows: (1) For those size fractions between 48 mesh and 150 mesh, froth sprinkling produces a marked reduction in both sulfur and ash. In the case of those sizes coarser than 48 mesh, while this reduction is not as significant, the additional benefit of shorter retention time is still a plus for froth sprinkling. Furthermore, when froth sprinkling is coupled with normal fast flotation, the product purity approaches that obtained by starvation reagent feeding, i.e., gradual feeding of flotation reagent to float the recoverable coal from the pulp slowly in several increments. It Was surprising to us to note that when a specimen of Nichrome V containing approximately 80 pet nicke1 and 20 pet chromium was heated to 850°C in a high vacuum, the specimen lost weight. The rate Of weight loss was very temperature sensitive. A study of this reaction in vacua and in a hydrogen atmosphere is the subject of this communication. Type Reactions Let us consider the various reactions which may occur when a metal is heated in vacua, in a hydrogen atmosphere, or in an oxygen atmosphere. Some of the early experiments on the behavior of 13 pct chrome-iron in vacua of the order of 5 X 106 mm and at a temperature of 600°C have been reported.5 These experiments showed a slow reaction with the residual oxygen or water vapor in the system and no reaction with hydrogen. This is in accord with thermodynamic data which would lead to the prediction that it is extremely difficult to maintain a hydrogen atmosphere at 600°C pure enough to reduce Cr203 formed on the surface. The crystal structure of the superficial oxide film formed on 13 pct chrome iron and Nichrome V has been investigated in the thin film range by Gulbransen, Phelps and Hickman,6 and shown to be Cr203. It was surprising to us to note that when a specimen of Nichrome V containing approximately 80 pct nickel and 20 pct chromium was heated to 850°C in a high vacuum, the specimen' lost weight. The rate of weight loss was very temperature sensitive. A study of this reaction in vacua and in a hydrogen atmosphere is the subject of this communication. DURING the past year, purchases of coal-preparation equipment and the discussions and plant-scale tests conducted indicate that much attention is being given to better recoveries of coal by preparation plants and improved quality of the finer sizes to widen their market. In the anthracite regions the new equipment was predominantly for the cleaning of the steam sizes, much of it for treating No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat. The units installed were largely coal-washing tables, Hydrotators, and Menzies cone separators.

The Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Limited, is in the town of Asbestos, situated approximately 100 miles northeast of Montreal and about the same distance southwest of Quebec, in Richmond County, Quebec. Mining operations were started in 1881 on outcrops on a hill, as a side-hill cut, followed by a second and third cut. This development was the forerunner of the present large open-pit operations, the mine now ranking as the largest open-pit asbestos mine in the world. Operations were first carried on by hand, then by horsepower and later by stem cableways. By 1924 the derrick spans, 2000 ft. or more long, became unwieldy. To overcome this, and also to eliminate hand labor as much as possible, steam shovels and railroad haulage were introduced. The steam shovels were replaced in 1928 by larger electric shovels of the full-revolving type. The Ore Body The ore body is a serpentinized peri-dotite rock mass. The chrysotile fibers form a network of veins throughout, varying from microscopic width to two or more inches measured across the veins (Fig. I). These veins may be continuous for a few or many feet; they may increase or decrease in width within a few feet. The veins in which the fibers occur per- pendicular to the veins are known as cross fiber. Those in which the fibers lay parallel to the veins are known as slip fiber. A study was made of the transformation kinetics of the commercial titanium-base alloys, Ti-2.5Al-16V and Ti-4A1-3Mo-1V, using two different heat treatment cycles: 1) step-quenching to aging temperatures from a ß solution anneal and 2) water-quenching from an a+ß solution anneal followed by reheating to aging temperatures. Metallographic examination and hardness testing provided the major portion of the data, while electrical resistivity, dynamic elastic modulus, and X-ray diffraction techniques were also used to obtain critical or confirnzatory data. TTT diagrams were constructed from these results. The sheet alloys, Ti-2.5Al-16V and Ti-4Al-3Mo-lV, are of current interest to the Department of Defense. As an aid to the planning of their respective heat treatments, a program was carried out to determine the transformation kinetics of these alloys using ß and a + ß reference states. This paper presents the TTT diagrams constructed from data obtained by metallographic examination and hardness testing, as well as by X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, and dynamic elastic modulus determinations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials—Sheets of the alloys were obtained from the producers in the "mill anneal'' condition and were tested prior to shipment to assure their meeting mill specifications. Chemical analyses were also supplied and are presented in Table I. Heat Treatment—The majority of the data presented in this study were obtained from hardness testing and metallographic examination. Sample coupons were cut from the alloy sheets and heat treated on a mass scale. The annealing cycles were operated in the following manner: 1) The ß solution anneals were carried out in a horizontal tube furnace with the bare samples protected by a dynamic helium atmosphere. Following this treatment, the samples were quickly transferred to lead, solder, or oil-bath furnaces for aging. After prescribed times at the various reaction temperatures they were water-quenched. 2) The second cycle simulated commercial practice, which requires the alloys be quenched to room temperature following the a + ß sotution anneal. This anneal was carried out in a muffle furnace with a dynamic helium atmosphere. The specimens were then reheated from room temperature to the reaction temperatures in lead, solder, or oil-bath furnaces, followed by water-quenching after prescribed times at these temperatures. Information concerning the critical temperatures of the alloys was obtained from the literature and solution treatments were based on these values. A summary of the solution annealing treatments is found in Tables II and 111. The aging temperatures for the (a - ß alloys ranged in 50°C intervals from 200°C (392oF) to approximately 50°C below the ß/a + ß transus in the first cycle and approximately 50°C below the a + ß solution temperature in the second. The transformations in these alloys were known to be rather rapid, and thus aging times started at 0.5 min and went to a maximum of 7000 min. Hardness Testing and Metallographic Preparation— Heat-treated samples were sheared and mounted in Bakelite with their cut edges exposed. After a flat surface was ground, the hardness was determined in Vpn on an Armstrong-Vickers machine utilizing a 20-kg load. Three to four impressions were made on each specimen. After this procedure, the hardness impressions were removed and the edge surfaces of the specimens were prepared for metallographic examination in the usual manner. The etchant was 20 pct HF and 20 pct HNO3 in glycerine. Electrical Resistivity—It has been shown that the isothermal reactions in titanium-base alloys can be followed by measuring the changes in e1etrical resistivity attending these transformations. As mentioned earlier, the reaction kinetics of a-ß alloys are rather rapid; thus, it would be expected that resistivity data obtained from these alloys would be more significant if measurements were made continuously at the respective aging temperatures. To accomplish this end a special apparatus, based on the current-potential principle, was assembled. PRACTICAL metallurgists are unanimous in stating that oxidation of mined sulphide ore adversely affects separation of the constituent minerals under standard conditions in a mill. Frequently, the need for different operating conditions in different plants is attributed either to the extent of oxidation of the mineral surfaces or to soluble oxidation products. The investigations reported in this paper study the effect of oxidation on the primary condition necessary for flotation, namely that of adhesion of an air bubble to the mineral. OXIDATION PRODUCTS FROM SULPHIDE MINERALS Weinig and Carpenter1 state that the relative rates of oxidation of some sulphides are: FeAsS > FeS2 > CuFeS2 > ZnS >PbS > Cu2S tetrahedrite. They also show that oxidation is rapid at first, that sulphides of older geological formations are more stable than those of recent date and that mixtures oxidize more rapidly than any one mineral alone. The more rapid oxidation of mixtures is borne out by results of Gottschalk and Buehler2 who found that PbS, ZnS and CuS oxidized 8 to 20 times faster when pyrite was present. Only the end products of oxidation, sulphate and the metal ion, were identified in these tests. Gaudin3 states that pyrite is difficult to oxidize in the laboratory. Winchell,4 using pyrite containing 99.98 pct FeS2, allowed water to percolate through a bed of this ground material. At the end of three months only a trace of Fe +++and S04- were found. Even after 10 months the quantity of Fe+++ was only 7.8 mg and S04- 25.5 mg per liter of percolating solution. Carmichael5 confirmed Winchell's results on the slow oxidation of pyrite. Usually the oxidation of sulphide surfaces has been conducted in neutral or acid solutions, the acidity being caused by the oxidation products. Eliseev and Nagirnyak6 found that treatment of pure pyrite with lime gave only thiosulphate, but considered it possible that thiosulphate was obtained not by oxidation of the pyrite itself, but by oxidation of calcium disulphide. Mitrofanov7 suggested that thiosulphate was formed by the following process: oxidation of sulphide to give free sulphur (this frequently happens with marcasite), followed by oxidation of the sulphur to sulphur dioxide and reaction of the sulphur dioxide with sulphur to give thiosulphate. Ferric and ferrous hydroxides, or similar compounds, were shown to be present. The Research Staff of the United Verde Copper Co.8 treated ore from the United Verde mine with lime. SALT-MAKING PROCESSES THE production of salt in the United States divides itself at the outset into two distinct classes: (1) The mining of rock salt and its purification and separation into marketable sizes, and (2) the production of salt by evaporation from brines, bitterns, and other solutions. The processes employed at the present time in the manufacture of salt by evaporation may be outlined as follows: 1. Solar evaporation. 2. Direct-heat evaporation (a) in open kettles; (b) in open pans. 3. Steam evaporation, (a) in jacketed kettles, (b) in grainers. 4. Vacuum-pan evaporation. In this paper only the solar-evaporation processes practised in different parts of the United States will be described. SOLAR EVAPORATION Localities In the Eastern States the solar-evaporation process is not generally employed for climatic reasons. In the Western States, particularly in California and Utah, the great bulk of the salt produced originates in the solar-evaporation process. Of the Eastern States producing salt, this process, so far as the writer is aware, is employed in New York State only.

Just a few years ago, my company was referred to as the Marion Steam Shovel Company. Though we still make shovels, both two and eight-crawler types, the eight-crawler stripping shovel appears to have been replaced by the walking dragline for overburden removal and in some cases for the mineral as well. The walking dragline appeared in the coal fields in the early 1930's. It is popular because it can cope with overburden depths in excess of 100 ft and with blasted sedimentary rock, all at an O & O (ownership and operational) cost of ±10[c] per bank cu yd (bcy).

The processes leading to fatigue failure in the low-cycle range were studied to obtain an understanding of the basis of Coffin's law. Particular attention was paid to the manner of mack nucleation and to the determination of the portion of the total lifetime spent in crack propagation. It was observed that cracks are nucleated at surface notches meated during reversed plastic deformation, Principally at grain boundaries, and that crack growth occupies greater than 75 pct of the fatigue life. When inclusions are present, they are often the primary sites of crack initiation. From consideration of the incremental distances advanced by a crack in each cycle and of the lifetimes of different materials, it appears that the universality of Coffin's law arises from the similarity of crack-tip strain for a given applied strain amplitude, irrespecti7:e of material. STUDIES of low-cycle fatigue have been particularly rewarding in that a simple correlation between fatigue lifetime and plastic-strain range has been shown to exist. This empirical relationship takes the forml,2 Nner=C [1] where N is the number of cycles to failure, Er is the plastic-strain range defined as the total plastic strain per cycle (the sum of the tensile plastic strain plus the compressive plastic strain), n, the exponent, is a constant independent of the material to a first-order approximation and often has a value of about 0.5, and C is a constant which for a number of ductile and metallurgically stable materials is approximately 0.65 for fully reversed strain.3 This relationship has been shown to be valid for a wide variety of metals and alloys and is often referred to as Coffin's law. However, it is yet not clear why so many different metals and alloys exhibit the same over-all behavior in the low-cycle range. Less is known about the mechanisms of fatigue failure in the low-cycle range than in the high-cycle range, but it is expected that the processes would have much in common. For example, an important characteristic common to both high-and low-cycle ranges is that fatigue crack propagation can occupy a considerable portion of the total lifetime. This has been shown by Laird and smith4 by a count of the number of ripples present on the fracture surface of copper specimens, each ripple corresponding to one cycle of load. On the other hand, some marked differences have been noted. For example, in copper,5 nickel, and aluminum4 there is a greater tendency for grain boundary cracking to occur as the strain amplitude is increased. The purpose of the present work was to study further the processes leading to fatigue failure in the low-cycle range and to obtain an understanding of the basis for the validity of Coffin's law. Particular attention has been paid to the manner of crack initiation and to the determination of the portion of total lifetime spent in crack propagation. MATERIALS A number of metals and alloys were tested, although more attention was focused on a particular few, once general trends had become apparent. Alloys were selected so as to investigate the effects of crystal structure, number of phases, stacking-fault energy, and impurity content. The materials in this grouping were: high-purity copper OFHC copper 1100 aluminum (commercially pure) 70-30 brass (Cu-30 wt pct Zn)

INTRODUCTION Cleaning fine coal sizes utilizing air currents in machines as the primary separating medium is called dry concentration or pneumatic cleaning. In 1947 approximately 18 million tons (16.38 million mt) of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines; in 1965, 25.4 million tons (23.1 14 million mt); but in 1975, only 7 million tons (6.37 million mt). Table 11-1 shows the tonnages cleaned of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States by various types of equipment from 1938-1963. Table 11-2 shows only tonnages cleaned by pneumatic methods from 1964-1975. The decrease in tonnage to approximately 7 million tons (6.3 million mt) is due to a higher moisture content in the mined coal and the greater difficulty in cleaning the coal by air. There also was a definite trend to load raw coal at the mines, especially the slack which is the most expensive to clean due to the dewatering and drying requirements. While there have not been any applications of pneumatic cleaning in the anthracite field, its use has not been fully explored. The same is true for lignite and subbituminous coals.

X HE recent investigation of Butler, McCabe, and paxton' on the vapor pressure of manganese gas in equilibrium with Mn-Fe alloys has been extended to include the iron-rich solutions and alloys in the two phase equilibrium region. The study of the phase equilibrium by Kurnakov and Troneva2 and the extensive reviews of the Mn-Fe system by Hansen,3 and Hellawe114 are not in agreement with regard to the location and extent of the equilibrium between the solid phases of fcc y and complex P in the temperature range above the eutectoid temperature of approximately 975Kwhere 0 decomposes to y and bcc a. An evaluation of the existing equilibrium data is confronted with the conflicting results presented by various investigators who used techniques requiring a quenching treatment to retain the high-temperature equilibrium or encountered temperature hysteresis during thermal analyses. The difficulty of suppressing the transformation of the manganese-rich concentrations of the y-solid solution during quenching has been well etablished.' To avoid this uncertainty the phase equilibrium was investigated at temperature by measuring the partial pressure of manganese gas in equilibrium

PUBLICATION of data by Irmann' indicating outstanding thermal stability and elevated-temperature strength properties in a sintered aluminum powder product (SAP) stimulated interest in the strengthening of metals by means of a highly dispersed oxide phase. This material was produced by compacting, sintering and extruding a fine flake aluminum powder, resulting in a dense product containing 10 to 16 volume pct alumina, which arises from the thin oxide film on the starting powder, highly dispersed in a matrix of pure aluminum. The method of producing SAP, and the stable high-temperature properties obtained from it, introduced the possibility of developing superior materials for high-temperature service by powder metallurgy methods. The composition of the materials of this type which are presently under consideration is predominantly metallic, containing from less than 1 pct up to about 20 volume pct of the oxide. As a result, other properties of these materials, such as electrical and thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, and to a certain extent ductility, notch sensitivity, machinability and hot working properties, are also predominantly metallic. These alloys do not constitute, therefore, a completely new class of materials as do the cermets, but rather present a new means of modifying the properties of a metallic matrix. In this sense, SAP type alloys are more closely analogous to the alloy aging systems. While the strength properties realized in the oxide-pure metal systems at the lower temperatures are substantially less than the best attainable in the aging systems, the thermal instabilities in the latter make them of less value for use at temperature much above their optimum aging temperatures, as indicated in Fig. 1. While the means of obtaining an oxide dispersion are more difficult and costly than conventional aging processes, in the light of the as yet limited understanding of such systems there is considerable promise of improved high temperature properties arising from the thermal stability of these structures. Chemical and physical properties of thiol collectors are re-examined to compare the prospects,of heavy metal-thiolate or disulphide surface reaction products acting as actual collector species. Recent evidences for the existence and importance of each of these types of adsorbed species on sulphide minerals are also discussed. A conclusion is reached that partial coverage by chemisorbed heavy metal thiolate is often sufficient to confer practical levels of hydrophobicity and floatability. Only on a few highly conducting and "noble" sulphides does adsorbed disulphide-type collector oxidation product appear to be significant.

THE United Verde Extension mine is located in the Jerome mining district, on the eastern slope of the Black Hills, approximately northeast of the town 'of Jerome, Yavapai County, Arizona. The ore deposit may be termed a replacement in Yavapai schist. This schist is one of the oldest formations in the district, being probably of volcanic origin, and has been folded and faulted and contains intrusions of diorite and quartz porphyry. It is believed that the mineralization followed the porphyry intrusions and replaced the country rock; this was followed by erosion and a period of secondary enrichment, all completed in pre-Cambrian time. Later sediments of sandstones and limestones, to the depth of approximately 600 ft. (182 m.), were laid down, followed by volcanic flows. Faulting and erosion again took place, resulting in the present complicated arrangement of the strata. Prospecting, therefore, is very difficult, because the sediments practically cover the mineralized areas. This necessitates the sinking of deep shafts, cross-cutting, and, in some instances, diamond drilling to learn something of the various relations of the different formations and the occurrences of intrusions associated with ore deposition. The locating of new orebodies, therefore, is beset with innumerable difficulties. EARLY MINING METHODS The two orebodies constituting the principal resources of the company are known as the- small orebody and the Bonanza, or large orebody. These are about 150 ft. (45 m.) apart, and while they appear to be distinct orebodies may later prove to be connected. The character of the ore, the general associations of the porphyries adjoining the orebodies, and other characteristics, both in the ore-and general environment, are very similar. The small orebody was the first to be discovered and was mined for some time before the Bonanza was found.

TWO or three years ago there were submitted to me some reports of tests that had been made on a semi-oxidized ore of silver looking to its treat-ment by combined flotation and cyanidation, together with a sample of the ore, with a request that I check the tests and confirm them, if possible. These tests had been made by a machinery-supply house and with them was a flow-sheet for a proposed mill, with full details of equipment to be used in the mill. The limited data on which this was based at once attracted my attention and have caused me from time to time to put various groups of students at work to develop simpler methods of obtaining data, which it appeared should be at hand and could be obtained by simple tests before attempting to treat these ores commercially. A brief discussion of the working out of such methods may be of interest and may contribute somewhat to the de-velopment of better testing methods for the small operator who has not at his command a staff of metallurgists. Of several tests on samples of varying assay and mineralogical composition, by cyanidation alone, by flotation alone, and, by combinations of the two, the following report was perhaps the most complete and may well serve as a typical example: METALLURGICAL TEST REPORT Silver Mines Co. Semi-oxidized Ore Procedure: Ore ground to 65 mesh, given flotation treat-ment using pine oil and potassium xanthate. Flotation tailing was thickened and given cyaniding agitation in solution strength of 5 lb. cyanide per ton and 2 lb. lime per ton.

The nucleation process for y', Ni3Ti, is shou'n to change from heterogeneous to uniform as the undercooling within the phase boundary increases. As unifornz nucleation beconres copious, (100) alignment is observed in the early stages of aging; howecer. whether or not the alignment is due to spinodal decomposition could not be determined. The presence oi a large-scale reversible segregation of titanium and not the intermediate precipitate y' may be the cause of the initial strengthening in this alloy system and the discrete regions detected magnetically by Ben-Israel and Fine. Evidence is presented for the role of dislocations in the formation at long aging tines oJ the equilibrium precipitate . ThE nickel-rich portion of the Ni-Ti phase diagram consists of a terminal fcc solid solution of titanium in nickel called y.' For temperatures below 1290°C if the solubility limit is exceeded and the temperature is high enough, the excess titanium will combine with nickel to form q, Ni3Ti, a four-layer hcp ordered structure with stacking sequence ABAC."~ Since a change in structure is involved, formation of q is slow and a metastable precipitate referred to as y' forms. This metastable precipitate is an ordered cubic phase in the unconstrained state having a structure similar to Cu3Au (LIZ) with the composition Ni,Ti."'5 From X-ray studies,8, 7 the following sequence is indicated for the precipitation reaction at low temperatures: 1) The appearance of satellites around low-index diffraction spots and splitting of high-index spots, indicating the formation of a slightly tetragonal phase in an imperfectly periodic arrangement. The tetragonal phase is y' or the depleted matrix, depending on the volume fractions of matrix and precipitate (and hence, the alloy composition); tetragonality apparently arises from coherency strains. 2) The appearance of diffraction spots from the equilibrium second phase, q. Ben-Israel and Fine'" used magnetic methods to measure the changes in matrix composition during aging, and to estimate the precipitate composition in a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy. They observed that the alloy, solution-treated at 1270°C and quenched, contained heterogeneities with discrete compositions which gradually vanished upon aging. It was suggested that y' may initially form as a defect structure with several possible compositions deficient in titanium as compared to Ni3Ti; the composition Ni3Ti develops with prolonged aging. The initial composition was Ni6Ti which would require a very large deviation in stoichiometry for y'. It was noted that at 700°C the precipitation reaction was 80 pct complete after 2 hr and that the volume fraction of second phase was 0.2 after 1 hr. Mihalisin and Decker' suggested that the equilibrium precipitate, besides being nucleated at grain boundaries, could also form at stacking faults. ~errick" examined the formation of in Ni-Cr-Ti, and suggested that a collapsed vacancy cluster within y' acted as a nucleus for intragranular q at high temperatures, 820" and 900°C. After long aging times at lower temperatures, 650" and 750°C, diffraction patterns taken from regions containing ribbons of stacking faults showed spots associated with q. Aging greatly enhances the mechanical properties of these alloys, even at high temperatures, and the metastable precipitate y' is thought to be responsible.' At 600°C the hardness of a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy increases rapidly during the first 20 hr of aging and continues to increase slowly thereafter.'" At 700°C the hardness reaches a maximum at 1 to 2 hr and then decreases.l1 In this paper the kinetics of formation of y' and the mechanism of transformation to in a Ni-Ti alloy are described. Evidence is presented that suggests that large-scale regions of titanium segregation are present initially and these may have an important influence on the initial strengthening of the alloy: these regions may be the heterogeneities detected by Ben-Israel and Fine. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-10.3 at. pct Ti-0.6 at. pct A1 alloy was prepared by vacuum melting. Its chemical analysis is given in Table I. A 0.007-in.-thick strip was sandwiched between foils of the alloy and placed in an open Vycor tube with titanium chips (to get oxygen) and solution-treated for ; hr at 1150°C in a Globar Furnace under a flowing argon atmosphere. Following a quench into an ice-brine mixture at -5" to -2"C, a sample to be aged at temperatures up to and including 700°C was sealed in an evacuated Vycor capsule before being put into a fused salt bath. Aging above 700°C was carried out on bare samples in a salt bath. When removed from this bath and quenched into an ice-water mixture, the sample was normally coated with a thin layer of oxide easily removed with emery
