PREVIOUS to 1915, zinc refining had not become a general practice among the zinc smelters in the United States. Such refining as had been carried on was confined chiefly to remelting very high-leaded zinc, such as third-draw metal from the retort furnaces, and slab dross, and hard spelter from galvanizing pots. In this remelting operation, the lead and iron were settled out and the refined spelter obtained graded fifth class, i.e., Prime Western. Owing to the presence of lead in most zinc ores, the bulk of the spelter produced by direct smelting is of this Prime Western grade. Careful selection of ores of low lead content gave purer grades of spelter, i.e., Brass Special and Intermediate; and smelters which could secure ores carrying practically no lead produced high-grade spelter. Thus, in general, the grade of spelter produced by any smelter was pre-determined by the purity of the ore it could obtain. The needs of the warring nations of Europe for enormous quantities of cartridge and other high-grade brass resulted in such a demand for the purer grades of spelter that the available supply of lead-free and low-lead ores could not produce the quantity required. Prime Western grades went begging, so to speak, while high grades sold at times from 5 to 15 c. per pound over the Prime Western market. The great demand, coupled with the wide market margin, which permitted the inherent costs and losses, resulted in the conversion of the lower grades into higher grades by processes of refining. These conditions also accentuated the development and size of the electrolytic plants, which were being worked out at the time this increased demand for pure grade of metal occurred. The electrolytic process, where available, produces a higher grade of spelter from impure ores than does the fire process; a large portion of those impurities in the ore, which by the distillation process would be carried into the spelter, are removed in the leaching of the ores and the purification of the solutions. The refining process, adopted at a number of smelters for the purpose of converting low-grade spelter into "grades suitable for brash was that of redistillation.

STEAM is, and doubtless always will be, the basic power in the anthracite industry, either directly applied through engines and pumps or electrically. The rapidity with which electric power is being applied to the mining and preparation of anthracite leaves little doubt as to its utility and economy. There is practically no operation, except possibly the drilling of hard rock, that has not been successfully electrified and the matter of drilling is handled economically with electrically driven compressors and the standard compressed-air drills. Conservation and the seemingly ever-increasing cost of production, justify careful consideration of the possible results of the more extensive use of electric power in the industry. It is not planned to discuss, herein, the relative economies of individual applications but to consider the relative economy and flexibility of steam and electric power. The reports available for the year 1920 indicate a production of slightly over 80,000,000 tons of anthracite, of which 8,843,500 tons were used for power and heating purposes; in other words, over 11 per cent. of the production was used at the mines. Some of this was used to generate electric power at the mines, about 160,000,000 kw-hr., while 150,000,000 kw.-hr. was purchased from the public utility companies. One large producer, who is buying some electric power and generating some, used over 13 per cent. of the production for power and heating at the mines. Another producer, where considerable electric power is generated on the properties, is using less than 9 per cent. of the output for power and heating. One of the largest producers has a fuel consumption of over 15 per cent. of the output, besides which considerable power is purchased. A careful study of the field indicates that steam-operated plants use upwards of 13 per cent. of the production for power and heating, while electrically operated plants use about 1 per cent. for heating; so that, for steam-power purposes at least 12 per cent., or 268.8 lb., are used for power out of each ton produced.

Secondary or scrap materials appear at all stages in the industrial process and in a bewildering variety of forms, grades, and values. It is useful to begin analyzing them by dividing the broad concept of "Secondary Supply" into three parts First, the concept must encompass the stock, or pool, of secondary materials. In the process of satisfying his wants, man produces desired products from the materials and natural resources found around him. As long as the rate of production is greater than the rate of obsolescence of a given product, the total stock or pool of materials embodied in that product will increase in size This stock concept relating to secondary materials is directly analogous to the "resource" concept used for primary raw materials in the preceding chapter, and includes all materials embodied in existing products (Obviously, this excludes those materials which are destroyed in the consumption process, viz , fuel oil burned to provide heat.) Consumption of a primary material in a productive process tends to reduce the resource base of that primary material In direct contrast, however, the production or use of products increases the resource base of the secondary material. Thus, we find that a country which has no resource of a primary material can, by importing products that contain the material, build up a large enough stock to provide a basis for secondary recovery. The estimated growth of the pool of copper in use in the United States through 1967 is shown in Table 5.B.1.a The estimate of 39 3 million tons at the end of 1967 includes only technologically recoverable copper and is, therefore, somewhat less than the stock concept described previously, which does not distinguish between recoverable and unrecoverable material. Nevertheless, Table 5 B.1 does give an idea of how a nation's secondary resource of a material can grow over the years. A second aspect of the concept of secondary supply is the generation of secondary materials. This includes materials generated as scrap in production as well as the movement of a material out of the stock of existing products via wear, damage, or obsolescence The quantity of materials generated is usually either nearly or completely independent of the technologic capabilities and economic forces which prevail in the secondary recovery market.b The justifications for and the qualifications to this statement are considered later. The final aspect of the concept of secondary supply consists in the secondary recovery process It is at this point that the technologic and economic forces of the secondary recovery market become the controlling fac-

The anelastic behavior of Ni-C alloys of nominal 0.5 wt pct C has been determined over a wide temperature range. The most prominent damping effect, that due to the presence of C-C pairs, was measured both above and below the Curie temperature. The effect on diffusion of the C-C pairs by magnetic spin ordering is deduced to be very small. The diffusion coefficient for C-C pairs in nickel is given by the expression ThE solid-state diffusion of both interstitial and sub-stitutional solutes in ferromagnetic solvents has been the subject of a number of investigations. Measurements of the self-diffusion of iron,"' the diffusion of nickel1,4 gold,"1 and cobalt4 into iron, the diffusion of vanadium in an Fe-V alloy,' and the diffusion of cobalt and nickel in Co-Ni alloys9 show an unusual behavior. In both the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions, far removed from the Curie temperature, the diffusion coefficient, D, obeys an Arrhenius relation. However, in the ferromagnetic region D is markedly lower than would be expected from an extrapolation of D from the paramagnetic region; this results in an increase in the activation energy in the ferromagnetic region. The cause of this effect for self- and substitutional diffusion is uncertain. Since substitutional diffusion is presumed to proceed by the vacancy mechanism, it has been variously suggested that the increase in activation energy below the Curie temperature is due to one of the following causes: 1) an increase in the energy of formation of a vacancy because of local demagnetization around the vacancy,2,3 2) a decrease in vacancy mobility in the ferromagnetic state,' or 3) an effect on the entropy of motion of a vacancy in the ferromagnetic state.5 Quite another explanation for the observed effect has been proposed by Borg.7 The diffusion coefficient is a function of the elastic constants of a metal. Since the temperature dependence of the elastic constants often changes at the Curie temperature, the temperature dependence of D might be expected to undergo a universal change in the vicinity of the Curie temperature. The magnitude of the change in D would, of course, depend on the magnitude of the change in the elastic constants. One might attempt to differentiate between vacancy effects and elastic effects by making measurements on interstitial alloys, in which vacancy effects play no role. Some measurements of this type have been made; this paper reports additional observations. Measurements of the diffusion of carbon in a Fe by a tracer technique8 and of the diffusion of carbon in a Co and in Co-Fe alloys by a decarburization method9 reveal a small effect, if any, on D of the magnetic change at the Curie temperature. If the effect of spin ordering is only to alter the parameters controlling formation or mobility of a vacancy, interstitial diffusion should indeed remain unchanged through the magnetic transition, as these measurements imply.

The trend in both the metallic and nonmetallic mining industry is toward processing increasingly higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This Paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to the configuration of a 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.

Significant improvements have been made in the ursine systern for epitaxial vapor gvowtlz of Gds. The electron concentration has been reduced to below 1015 cm-3 with electron-mobility values as high as 7200 sq on per v-sec at 30PK and 60,000 sq cw7 per v-sec at 77°K. These high-purity layers have been successfully gvown on n&apos; layers with thicknesses as snzall as 1 p and as large as 125 p. Furthermore, high-purity layers have been incorporated into an structure without degradation of electrical properties. Different impurity gradients at the n&apos; to n interface were achieved. Using these structures, Gunn oscillators have been operated at frequencies as low as 0.4 GHz and as high as 40 GHz, which equals the highest valzle yet reported. The frequencies nleasured are in reasonable apeenlent with those calculated fron7 the n-layer widths and the transit times. CW operatiolz has been achieved from 3 to 20 GHz. In Gunn devices for >40 GHz operation (i.e., witk an n-layer tkickness below 2.5p), the n layer has been generally too pure to permit oscillations to occuv. ThE mechanism of the Gunn oscillator&apos; is now generally understood.2-5 Electron transfer from the (000) minimum to the ( 100) minima leads to a voltage-controlled negative resistance, which results in the formation of domains of high and low electric fields which travel through the crystal with a characteristic velocity of about 107 cm per sec. When a constant voltage is applied to the sample, this domain motion generaliy leads to oscillations at the transit time frequency, fT = 107/L, where L is the thickness of the active n layer.&apos; In this case, a single high-field domain is nucleated at the cathode and grows until it reaches the anode, where it is absorbed; a new domain then forms at the cathode.5 There are related modes of oscillation of the same device in which a tuned circuit causes a periodic variation of the voltage across the device. The frequency then may be either above or below fT. It has been shown that oscillations will occur when n • L 2 1012 cm"2, where n is the carrier concentration in the active region. At lower doping densities, 10" 5 n . L 5 lo&apos;&apos;, the doping is said to be subcritical for oscillation and the description of the device operation changes since the domains become comparable in thickness to the device thickness, L. Nevertheless, such devices have been found to be "active" and, in fact, are useful as amplifiers.778 For CW operation, one wishes to minimize the power dissipation, which is related to the electric field, E, and the low-field resistivity, p. Below threshold, the power dissipation density is approximately Typically, at threshold where E -- 3 x 103 v per cm, the dissipation density is 107/p watts per cu cm, p in ohm-cm. Furthermore, it is desirable to provide good conduction of the heat generated in the active region. The temperature rise, AT, across the active layer of a sandwich structure, with a heat sink on one side, is given by AT = (E&apos;/P)(L~/~~) where it is assumed that the thermal conductivity, u, and resistivity, p, of GaAs do not vary appreciably over the range of temperature and electric fields existing in the layer. This expression shows that, subject to maintaining an appropriate (n . L) product, CW operation is favored by a higher resistivity, a lower threshold field, and a thinner device. The above device requirements place some severe restrictions on the materials to be used, especially for high-frequency (>10 GHz) operation. Here, it is necessary to prepare very thin (<10 µ) layers of GaAs, in a state of high purity (-1 ohm-cm), complete with very low-resistance ohmic contacts. Problems of handling such thin and fragile samples become inereasingly severe as the frequency is raised. Furthermore, while good low-resistance ohmic contacts are easily applied to low-resistivity GaAs, contacting difficulties are encountered for these higher-resistivity materials.

CANBY, Wallingford, Conn.-On page 2, the author speaks of the importance of using a testing sieve clothed with the same material as the screen being studied; does he regard this as essential? In practice, how does the screen efficiency calculated by the difficult-grain method compare with those computed by the usual undersize method? Is it possible by the author&apos;s method, to obtain a measure of efficiency that can safely be compared with that of another screen sizing a different ore? ROBERT K. WARNER.-The use of a testing sieve clothed like the mill screen being studied is desirable but not essential for routine work about a mill where the character of the feed varies little, as regards the shape of the grains and the sizing test. Close agreement in size of aperture between the sieve and the screen is, however, important if the data obtained are to be valuable to others working on a different feed. If the testing sieve is coarser than the mill screen, the efficiency will appear unfairly low; whereas if it is too fine one might get efficiencies greater than 100 per cent. because of the apparent oversize in the undersize. In either of these cases the usefulness of the difficult-grain method of calculation would be reduced. As screens wear, the undersize grows appreciably coarser so that it is desirable to test screens only when the cloth is new or else to provide testing sieves that are worn about the same amount. The futility of making efficiency observations on a. distorted or broken screen surface is obvious.

The production of non-ferrous secondary metals has become a large and important industry in the United States, and deals with practically cvery type of manufacturing concern. Its business is unique in that it generally buys frorn its customers as well as sells to them, whether they are individuals, cities, corporations, or the United States government. Its operations are of vital importance to the success and prosperity of nlany of the nation&apos;s most important manufacturers; yet there are few industries about which less is generally known by those outside it, whether concerning the rliagnitude of its operations or the details of its actual technique. The industry itself is to blame for this meager publicity, because its technical men have made few attempts to openly exchange ideas, in spite of the excellent examples set by the iron and steel or the copper and brass industries. Whether this is due to the ancient shroud of secrecy generally supposed to cover smelting operations, or because its technical men actually felt that the industry was too puny to be interesting, is hard to say. This paper will consider its subject in a general way, attenlpting to show something of the size and importance of the industry, as well as its fitness to do its work well. Attention will be called to the sound economic reasons for the handling of non-ferrous wastes by specialists, and to the often unseen losses of metals and labor which occur when manufacturc~rs rcclairn thrir own metallic wastes. Magnitude of the Modern Industry No particular thought is given to the kitchen accident whereby a ruined saucepan is sorrowfully tossed into the ash can, yet it is a fairly safe guess that within a month this saucepan, together with hundreds of its follows, will again be in service, perhaps in an autonlobile crankcase, or in an electric vacuum sweeper. It is by this conversion of the useless into the useful, whether from home or large manufacturer, that the secondary tonnage is built up.

Introduction Slope angles are one of the major factors affecting the shape of the final pit and the location of the walls Due to differences in geology, the optimum slope angles vary from pit to pit and within different parts of the same pit. Indeed, it is not unusual to have different slope angles for the top and bottom portions of the same cross section. The optimization of these slope angles is a major study in itself and this chapter is intended as a general introduction to the subject. It is not intended to be a comprehensive text for the absolute beginner The objective is to put the various aspects of slope stability analysis into relative perspective by describing the vari¬ous analytical techniques available and indicating when each may be most appropriately used References are made to the many excellent texts and papers on slope stability for the reader who does not have a formal training in soil or rock mechanics. In writing this chapter, an assumption has been made that a tentative mining plan has been drawn up, includ¬ing a preliminary estimate of the slope angles. It has also been assumed that all the necessary field and laboratory data has been collected and reduced to a form suitable for input into the stability analyses.

Discussion of the paper of. C. L. DAKE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1429 to 1436. A. C. LAWSON, Berkeley, Cal.-It appears that our bog-iron ores are due in a large measure to the activity of certain iron bacteria, and a paper dealing with this subject that makes no reference to that particular agency strikes me as rather curious. C. L. DANE, Rolla, Mo.-Mr. Lawson&apos;s criticism that this paper makes no reference to the activity, of iron bacteria is scarcely true. On p. 1430 I stated: "Certain bacteria precipitate iron by building the hydrated oxide into their body cells," and again, "There are many other means by which, under special conditions, iron may be precipitated in nature. Oxidation, evaporation of CO2, and iron bacteria have been held to be the most important." Thus the activity of bacteria receives as extended mention as the action of any other agency in precipitation of iron. The paper makes no pretense of covering exhaustively the origin of bog ores, but, as its original title suggested, refers to Some Principles Controlling the Formation and Distribution of Bog Iron Ores. Mr. Lawson seems to have entirely missed the main thesis of the paper, which attempts to establish some relation between glaciation and abundance of bog ores now forming. Unfortunately, I have no immediate access to the literature of the subject, but my best recollection is that the data regarding iron bacteria throw no light whatever on the cause of bog ores being so much in ore abundant within the limits of the glaciated regions, and being reported much less frequently from the tropics. This lack of data is suggested in the following (p. 1434): "It has already been shown that bacteria aid in the precipitation of iron. Whether tropical conditions increase or decrease the activity of such bacteria is unknown."

H. W. Turner, San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secretary*): This excellent paper apparently represents the results of extensive observation and experience among the mines of the Mother-Lode, but I strongly question its relegation of the dioritic intrusions to the period of fissuring and ore-deposition. The dioritic rocks referred to are evidently those areas represented by Ransome in the Mother-Lode folio1 as meta-diorites, and, as he says, are merely basic facies of the great granodiorite batholite of the Sierra Nevada. If followed downward I venture to predict that these meta-diorite areas would be found to connect with the great batholite, and to be in fact mere apophyses of it. I see no reason for supposing that these apophyses were intruded into the Mother-Lode slates at a period later than the intrusion of the granodiorite in general. The period of fissuring was subsequent to this intrusion; the basic granodiorite or quartz-diorite areas of the foot-hill region are themselves fissured extensively; and the fissures were filled with quartz, apparently during the same general period of the formation of the Mother-Lode veins. Prichard and Ransome2 both refer to the deposition of quartz in the same lode at different periods resulting from a reopening of the fissures. Some time since, I saw in the stopes of the

A steadily growing body of evidence indicates that earthquake ground motions can cause failure of rock slopes that are otherwise stable under static loading conditions. As a result, the economic optimum working slope angle is reduced when earthquake shaking is considered in surface mine design, especially in regions of high seismicity. When designing surface mine slopes to withstand seismic motion it is as important to consider the probability of experiencing various levels of ground shaking as it is to consider the characteristics of the ground motion. For most slope designs, simple probabilistic techniques such as extreme value or maximum likelihood techniques are appropriate. These techniques, however, should be applied in such a way that a probability value is assigned to characteristic ground motion parameters at the mine rather than to nearby earthquake magnitudes. Several techniques have been developed to analyze rock slopes subjected to dynamic loads. Most of these techniques do not adequately account for the ground motion parameters of concern. The best technique appears to be one that utilizes actual earthquake time histories. A simple technique that calculates block displacement for any input accelerogram, using a linear acceleration approximation between time steps, has been developed that accurately accounts for rock block response. Results using this technique indicate that the following factors are important for assessing rock slope stability in earthquake regions:

It is unnecessary to repeat here the contents of many valuable contributions to this subject which have appeared in the Dansactions and in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. As a basis for the further suggestions of this paper, the following are the most important: 1. The investigation of J. R. Don,&apos; showing the gold of certain Australasian veins to have been deposited by ascending solutions, and not by lateral secretion. 2. The theory of Prof. Posepny? distinguishing the vadose from the deep circulation, and ascribing the origin of certain classes of ore-deposits to ascending solutions of the latter class. 3. The theory of Prof. Van Hise,3 as to the underground circulation and the primary enrichment of veins thereby. 4. The paper of Prof. J. F. Kemp,4 showing that ore-deposits are largely the products of " expiring vulcanism." Many. of Prof. Kemp&apos;s ideas have been widely adopted by mining men. 5. The theory of secondary enrichment, so lucidly expounded by Mr. S. F. Emmons.V his theory, dealing with the rearrangement of ore-bodies after primary mineralization, has been generally adopted, and seems to me to have been as completely proved as the nature of the case permits. That the death of Martin Coryell, which occurred at Lambertville, New Jersey, on Monday morning, November 29th, touched the sympathies of a wide circle of professional associates and personal friends, was amply testified by the gathering at the funeral services on Friday. Like his distinguished friend and neighbor, the late Ashbel Welch, Mr. Coryell was one of those pioneers in American engineering to whom we owe the great railway and canal systems which lie at the base of our national prosperity, and who have consequently enjoyed the respect and esteem of their successors of the present generation. Martin Coryell was born July 20th, 1815, at New ope, Rucks County, Pa., and was educated principally in the schools of his native town arid of Lambertville, New Jersey, to which place he returned for permanent residence fifty years later. With the exception of a brief period in youth, during which, to restore his failing health, he learned and practiced for a few months the carpenter&apos;s trade, and another brief period, later in life, when he read law for a time in the office of B. H. Brewster, of Philadelphia, afterwards Attorney-General of the United States, Mr. Coryell may be said to have spent his life as an active civil and mining engineer. Even these two episodes can scarcely be said to have been deviations from that profession, since they served to give him more thorough preparation for constructive and administrative work. The Delaware Division Canal, the Raritan Canal, and the Brunswick Canal, are among those upon which Mr. Coryell was employed. For the Raritan Canal Company, under the superintendence of Ashbel Welch, he located the greater part of the Belvidere Railroad (now the Belvidere division of the Pennsylvania Railroad), and directed its construction from Trenton to Lambertville. He was also active as a mining engineer, being one of the early pioneers of mining in the Lake Superior copper region, and had much to do with the development of the Hazleton coalfield and the railroad which has since expanded into the Lehigh Valley system. In 1862, he removed to Wilkes-Barre, where, in 1864, he became manager of the Warrior Run Mining Company. One of the editors

It is generally conceded as axiomatic that the aggregate producer and the average urban resident have mutually incompatible goals. The producer wants to be near his mass market and the average resident wants him as far away as possible. The traditional economic decision to mine local material to avoid transportation costs is increasingly challenged by zoning and planning bodies and by citizens&apos; groups. This conflict generated much written and spoken word and offered opportunity for great flights of rhetoric. The pressure on the producer also has forced re¬appraisal of the need for the classic confrontation with indications that much of the conflict is more apparent than substantive. In New England several factors combine to increase complexity of the siting problem. It is a region of high land values and population density. Due to the proximity of metropolitan areas, even rural communities have experienced a prolif¬eration of environmental groups with concomitant enthusiastic regional planning and critical watch over land use. In New England where there is little public understanding of the necessity for, and the realities of, mineral production a sophisticated approach to aggregate production site location is required.

Oxidation hardening of cylindrical and spherical specimens first decreases with depth below the surface, but then increases again as the center is approached. This is in agreement with the view that this change in hardness is mainly determined by the change in velocity of the oxidation boundary, which affects the dispersion of the oxide. WHEN a thick slab of silver containing 0.3 pct Mg by weight is internally oxidized, the hardness measured on a cross section is found to decrease considerably with distance from the surface.&apos; This phenomenon has been attributed to the diminution of the velocity of the oxidation boundary. The smaller this velocity is, the more slowly the free-oxygen concentration rises towards the concentration in equilibrium with the oxygen gas. And a small 0 concentration favors dissociation and thus conglomeration of the oxide. For instance, the hardness decreases more rapidly during long annealings in nitrogen than in air.&apos; Measurements by Gregory and Smith3 on sections through internally oxidized Al-silver wire showed a smaller variation in hardness, probably because the wire diameter was only 0.9 mm. Wood4 found a drop in hardness with depth in internally oxidized Al-copper strip, and also—by electron microscopy—the concomitant increase in Al2O3 particle size. Under certain circumstances internal oxidation leads to formation of rather irregular inner oxide films in the midst of dispersed oxide. This special sort of conglomeration—discussed in Ref. 5—is also favored by greater depth below the surface.3,5 In this paper hardness measurements in large diameter cylindrical and spherical specimens are described. Here the oxidation velocity* goes through ness initially decreases with depth but increases again towards the center. Normally, the diffusion coefficient D1 of oxygen is very large compared to D2, that of the dissolved metal. If, furthermore, the atomic fraction c2 of the latter is much larger than the O-solubility cl- but c2D2 << c1D1- the velocities in question are easily calculated2 to be: for the cylinder and for the sphere. Here p is the radial coordinate of the oxidation boundary and R the specimen radius, which in dilute silver alloys is constant, as no external oxidation occurs. These equations have been derived for a divalent solute; for nondivalent solutes c2 has to be multiplied by half the valency. The equations are not valid near the center. For which can be considered as a standard case,2 the Eqs [I] and [2] begin to yield U-values which are appreciably too high for p/R = 0.05 and 0.15, respectively. But at the v-minima they are still very good approximations. These minima lie at p = emlR= 0.37R in the cylinder and p = 1/2 R in the sphere. Other factors besides the velocity v will also influence the hardness. The oxide concentration cox is constant in a flat strip, apart from a narrow region in the middle,2 but in cylindrical and spherical specimens cox decreases steadily with depth. THE autumn is the time that nearly all the special groups within the broad field of the Institute&apos;s activitives chose for their own special meetings. The big annual meeting in New York in February has its own special advantages, but to realize them involves sacrificing others. A meeting of a smaller group with the subjects brought up for discussion much more closely limited to a single field of interest has some advantages that a big general meeting cannot possibly have. And so the custom has gradually developed of having these smaller meetings in the autumn, at con¬venient places, so the men will not have to travel too far from the job to be present. Sometimes the meetings have for their field of interest a single phase of mineral technology, and are called divisional, and at other times they cover a diversity of topics that are locally important in that geographical area, and are then called regional meetings. Of the five meetings to be held this fall, four are divisional and one regional. Two of the divisional meetings are to be held in the same place at the same time, but with programs so arranged that they do not conflict.

INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lake-land, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern pro-ducers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This informa-tion has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered.
