Unlike the bituminous part of the coal industry, the production of anthracite has been fairly well publicized; in fact until about 1845 whenever the coal industry of Pennsylvania was mentioned in papers, magazines or books, anthracite only was meant. Beginning with shipments by river in 1820 fairly complete records of shipments were published each year, and as this variety of coal was the only one used for domestic purposes east of the mountains and north of the Potomac, there was considerable interest in the producing fields on the part of the public. Transportation of anthracite was the cause of the building of the early canals in the state, and later, of some of the earliest railroads. In most publications it has been assumed that commencement of shipments in 1820 was the beginning of the industry; this is far from being so, and it is with the earlier developments this chapter will deal, leaving the later and better known records to existing publications. (See Table No. 53.) The first reference to coal in Pennsylvania by Gabriel Thomas in 1698 has already been mentioned,1 it could only have been anthracite in that section; although of course, he never saw any coal there. Little coal was used excepting by smiths for many years after that. In 1728 the Coventry Forge paid the expenses of a man "to town for Sea Coall and Steell for ye hammer;”2 in 1729 New Castle coal was sold in Philadelphia;3 in 1740 an advertisement mentioned, "very good Pitt and Sea Coal at 18 pence a bushel; at which price 'tis allowed to be cheaper Fewel for Hearth Fireing than Wood at the present Rates,"4 a view not shared by most of the people there for about eighty years; in 1752 Newcastle coal was again mentioned.5 There are no references to coal in the writings of any of the Moravian missionaries, although some who settled near Mauch Chunk in 1746 said that the Indians there made their pipe heads of a soft black stone, which was much more apt to have been slate than anthracite." INTRODUCTION ARSENIC, antimony and phosphorus are now used in the brass industry as standard inhibitors in preventing dezincification in [ ] condenser tubes. This subject has been thoroughly covered by Barry,1 who described the testing procedure by total immersion of suitable specimens in a I per cent cupric chloride solution at definite temperatures. Effects of dezincification were then determined by loss in tensile strength and elongation of the test specimens after definite periods of immersion. In the crystallography of the chemical elements as tabulated by William Hume Rothery,2 phosphorus (metallic), arsenic, antimony and bismuth are placed in group V-B and the type of crystal lattice for arsenic, antimony and bismuth is given as rhombohedral. The Metals Handbook3 [ ] lists them as "rhombohedral hexagonal," with the additional notation that for arsenic this is the ordinary form at 20°C.; other modifications known or probable at other temperatures. In view of these statements and of the fact that phosphorus, arsenic and antimony are effective in increasing the resistance to dezincification, it was natural to assume that bismuth would act in the same manner. The atmosphere, which plays such an important part in the manufacture of iron and steel, is the most variable element involved in its several processes; and particularly is this true of the blast-furnace process, which consumes air in large quantitiee. At no time since the blast-furnace became an important and widely used apparatus—even when it was operated in the most crude manner—have the variations in composition of the raw materials used been as frequent and as great as the variations in humidity of the atmosphere. Important improvements have been made in the blast-furnace and its accessories, such as the hot-blast stoves, the increase in size and change in the shape of the furnace, more efficient blowing-engines, the increased protection given to the bosh-walls, and the careful preparation of the raw material, all of which have exerted a pronounced influence on the furnace-operations from a metallurgical standpoint. But during the past eight years little advance has been made in this direction; the fuel-consumption has not diminished, nor has there been any material increase in production. Within that period, however, there has been witnessed the greatest development in appliances for the economical handling of material. So complete has been the work in this direction, that, except in isolated cases, in this country at least, a further extension does not hold out much promise of a satisfactory return on the investment required. The function of gas in the development and production of oil has far-reaching consequences that should be emphasized. The technical aspects of the subject have recently had a great deal of attention but less thought has been given to fundamental concepts underlying oil and gas law and the many customs and practices that have grown up in the industry. I shall review briefly the advance in knowledge of the subject and attempt to relate these concepts to legislative, judicial and operating problems. Early writers on oil and gas in Pennsylvania noted their close association in oil pools and their contemporaneous decline in output; also, that as gas pressure decreases so does production, that new offset wells reduce the output of existing wells, and even that tubing a well lengthens its flowing life. Expanding gas was deduced as the principal expulsive force. These fundamental observations had been made at least as early as 1880.1 They were treated, however, as academic considerations and did not greatly influence law or practice for many years except to instill into all operators an urgent desire to hasten offset drilling in order to obtain as much of the flush as possible. The most noteworthy later advance in knowledge came in 1926 when Beecher and Parkhurst published their paper on Effects of Dissolved Gas upon the Viscosity and Surface Tension of OiL.² This paper added to the old idea of an expelling force the concept of a modifying agent that actually changes the physical characteristics of the oil and facilitates its movement through the pore spaces of the reservoir rock. Largely since the publication of this paper, intensive study and concerted effort have been given to means of using to a maximum, in producing oil, these combined properties of gas. This is shown clearly by the number of papers dealing with the subject, and the new and revived terms now widely used to express thought, such as the expressions gas energy, reservoir pressure, reservoir energy, gas-oil ratio, bottom-hole pressure, beaning, tapered tubing and back-pressure. Man's material advance from one level of civilization to the next has involved the development of new, more useful tools and the utilization of energy greater than he alone could produce. These two essentials for material progress have developed at an ever increasing rate in the last century. While the first really successful use of mechanical energy derived from burning fuel was in James Watt's steam engine which pumped water from coal mines in Cornwall about 1770, there was still very little use of mechanical energy in mining by 1900 except for pumping and hoisting. Compressed air, having some of the characteristics of steam and which operated engines not unlike steam engines or steam hammers, powered the first attempts to mine coal with energy greater than human muscle could provide. When direct current-powered traction cars replaced horse-drawn transportation cars on city streets, it was natural that direct current locomotives should begin to replace animal and human power in mine haulage. Slowly, trolley and battery locomotives were developed and introduced. With d-c systems being established for haulage, it was natural that improved cutting machines should be developed and powered by d-c motors. Thus began the years of

MAGNESIUM alloy tubing and hollow shapes are finding increasingly wider usage in practical applications today. Square and rectangular tubing and hollow shapes find [ ] greater diversification in use than standard round tubing. Typical applications are roller conveyors, ladder rungs, spools, furniture, tank car loading tubes, athletic equipment, and business machine parts. In general, the amount of tubing and hollow shapes produced represent a minor portion of the magnesium extrusion business. The magnesium alloys in which tubing and hollow shapes are being produced together with typical properties are presented in Table I. MI A alloy is a low cost alloy possessing good welding and stress corrosion characteristics together with moderate formability and corrosion resistance. It is widely used for low strength applications. AZ31 B, alloy is used for moderately stressed applications and possesses good corrosion resistance and formability with fair welding characteristics. AZ61 A alloy has slightly higher physical properties than AZ31 B alloy together with good formabil- [ ] ity and corrosion resistance but slightly poorer welding characteristics. AZ80 A, ZK60 A-F, and ZK60 A-T5 alloys are used where the maximum in physical properties is required. AZ80 A alloy possesses fair corrosion resistance but with formability and welding characteristics inferior to' the other alloys. ZK60 A-F and ZK60 A-T5 alloys, while only recently offered for com¬mercial use, are finding favor due, to the higher permissible extrusion rates. These alloys possess greater toughness than AZ80 A alloy and, while of moderate formability at room temperature, are very formable at 300° to 500°F. The major portion of tubing and hollow shape production at the present time is in AZ3I B alloy. The extra degree of freedonz introduced by a second independetzt concentration in a tenzary system gives rise to the possibility of unstable planar phase interfaces in semi-infinite diffision layer couples. Diffusion paths which pass continuously in and out of too-phase regions of the phase diagram but which are not coincident with tie-lines give rise to super saturated zones which may be either adjacent to or isolated from planar phase interfaces, with corresponding nonisolated or isolated precipitates. Nonisolated precipitates are equivalent to morphological development of the interface. Selected couples in the ternary systems Fe-Ni-Cr and Cu-Zn-Sn have been examined nzetallographically and ifz the latter case both isolated and uo~zisolated precipitates have been observed. The diffusion path in one of the couples showing interface morphological developtnent has been examitled using electron probe microanalysis. IGNORING the spurious effects of preferential grain boundary diffusion and anisotropic crystal growth7 it can be unequivocally stated that it is impossible for a binary isothermal diffusion couple constructed of two unsaturated phases to sustain a nonplanar phase interface. Consider for demonstrative purposes the schematic phase diagram of Fig. l(a). Given an initial flat phase interface, semi-infinite boundary conditions and the internal boundary condition fixed by the constitution diagram, xB = xB(T), the unique solution of the diffusion equation requires a persistent flat interface. No other solution is possible. If, however, we anticipate the involvement of surface tension, then the internal boundary condition must be written xB = xB (T,Y) where r is the radius of curvature of a hypothetical nonplanar interface. The introduction of a new parameter such as r can be equivalent to the release of an internal constraint, so that a stable nonplanar interface may be possible after all. Consider a perturbation to the interface as indicated in Fig. 1(b). According to the Ostwald-Freundlich equation: which is applicable to a system of this constitution, the solubility of A in the matrix ß ,xB (Y), at a point of curvature r is given by where Va is the molar volume of the a-phase, R is the gas constant, and a is the interfacial tension. Since the right hand side is positive, xB(r) >xB cm, as indicated in Figs. 1(a) and 1(c). Accordingly, the perturbation will carry the interface concentration in a direction which is opposite to that which would sustain local equilibrium. Such a perturbation is necessarily moderated and the system is returned to its initial condition. General expressions are derived relating the streaming potential to the electrochemical potential of a permeable junction separating two electrolytic solutions. By the methods of irreversible thermodynamics, these potentials are related to the flux of mobile species arising from differences in pressure and chemical composition. The flux is conveniently expressed as a transference number, the equivalents of a mobile species transferred through the junction per faraday of electricity. At constant pressure, the flux equation gives the electrochemical potential across the permeable junction. The streaming potential across the junction is obtained by imposing the condition of constant chemical composition. The familiar expression for the borehole SP is shown to be a particular solution of the general flux equation. The derived exprersions were verified in experiments with seven shale samples. Both the theory and experimental data provide additional proof of the presence and magniturle of the streaming potential in shales. INTRODUCTION In the interpretation of electric logs, there has been much concern over the correction to be made to the recorded SP for an electrokinetic or streaming potential originating from the difference in pressure between the mud column and the formation. It was long recognized by M. R. J. Wyllie that such an electrokinetic potential source mas in the mud cake opposite permeable sands.' More recently, M. Gondouin and C. Scala2 showed an additional but opposing electrokinetic source of potential to be in shale beds. Their work was supported by the very extensive and excellent work of Hill and Anderson.3 n the present contribution, the general relationships between the electrochemical potential and the corresponding streaming or electrokinetic potential are examined and clarified. A notable advance towards understanding the relation between the various sources of electrical potential in a borehole has been the application of the now common methods of irreversible thermodynamics to describe the passage of ions and water through charged electrolyte junctions such as in shales.' The advantages of these methods are twofold. Unlike classical thermodynamics, they can be applied to non-equilibrium sys- tems, i.e., systems in which flow takes place, provided the flow processes have reached a steady state. They also permit conventional thermodynamic properties to be related to the steady-state dynamic properties. These methods arc used here specifically to derive expressions relating the potential behavior of shales in terms of ion and water transport. Experimental verification of the expression for the shale streaming potential is given which in turn offers theoretical support to the existence of a streaming potential in shales.' Importantly, the relative contribution of transport parameters to the SP is clarified. The theoretical treatment is essentially that of Lori-mer, Boterenbrood and Hermans3 ut has been extended to derive the general expression for the SP.

INTRODUCTION In early 1978, engineering personnel at The Carter Mining Company began using photogrammetry coupled with a computer modeling technique to aid in mine planning efforts. The decision to develop this approach was based on the following needs: 1. A method to accurately capture excavated quantities for reporting purposes, 2. A method to produce accurate up-to-date maps for planning purposes, and 3. A computer-based mine-planning technique that would be compatible with techniques used in the past. The system developed utilizes a photogrammetric contractor to provide thousands of aerially-surveyed data points for input into the computer system. Each month the Rawhide and Caballo mines are flown by the photogrammetric contractor. The terrain of the active pit area is digitized and punched out on computer cards. This information is read into The Carter Mining Company's computer facilities, and an updated two-dimensional topographic grid model of the pit is generated. This surface is used to generate quantities moved during the month, to update isopachs, and to update quantities contained in fixed block progression polygons used for forecasting purposes. The system has greatly reduced the amount of manhours spent in field surveying and provides a useful tool for expeditiously evaluating many different forecast cases. It also provides the

Many operational problems in mine haulage cannot be solved economically by conventional analytic or trial and error methods. However, a method of probabilistic simulation, which is based on the fundamental assumption that many of the variables governing any physical system are probabilistic, has been adapted to certain areas of operations research in coal mine haulage. This paper attempts to illustrate how simulation can be used in basic haulage research and what kind of results can be expected. Optimization in this case is performed in terms of locomotive and car movement, as well as best utilization of men and equipment, and is approached primarily from the standpoint of scheduling of the main haulage. Many operational problems in mine haulage cannot be solved economically by conventional analytic or trial-error methods. However, a method of probabilistic simulation, which is based on the fundamental assumption that many of the variables governing any physical system are probabilistic, has been adapted to certain areas of operations research in mine haulage. In many physical cases several probability distributions interact with each other in special ways, and it is not possible to solve for their combined effect in a mathematical equation. This is often true in the case of mine haulage, where such variables as number of empties or loads per trip, travel times, and number of cars or tons produced in a given time are probabilistic. By using a simple example of one secondary haulage segment of a large underground haulage system, this paper attempts to illustrate how simulation can be used in basic haulage research and what kind of results can be expected. Optimization in this case is performed in terms of locomotive and car movement, as well as best utilization of men and equipment. This is the type of preliminary research that will be needed as a first phase in any major haulage study, whether it be a relatively simple economic analysis or a plan for complete automation. The problem of optimization has been approached primarily from the standpoint of scheduling of the main haulage. It is evident that the method of proba-

This paper presents a general discussion of the utility of the statistical technique known as multiple correlation, and gives three specific examples of its application. The first demonstrates the most simple form, or straight-line, multiple correlation. The other two demonstrate multiple correlation analysis in best-fitting third-degree parabolas. With the increasing availability of digital computers, the method becomes entirely feasible where heretofore its use was impractical. The advantages of the method are discussed, and curves are presented which were developed by computerizing the regression equations developed in the examples. The method described in this paper is for use with complex systems, and the examples given are complex metallurgical systems. This subject falls under the general classification of cybernetics, which is defined' as "the science of control and communication, in the animal and the machine." Machine, in this case, can include chemical and physical processes which take place within machines and processing equipment of all kinds. The classical approach to scientific investigation has been the construction of simple models and the changing of variables one at a time. This method is wholly inadequate for obtaining useful information from the complex systems of modern technology including many of our flotation and hydrometallurgical processes. Cybernetics offers the method by which complex systems which have been implemented as an art in the past can now be analyzed with all the discipline of a science. Mathematical techniques for achieving multiple correlation analysis have decided advantages over some of the other statistical methods.2-4 Multiple correlation does not require a series of experiments that have been rigidly planned as do many of the other statistical methods. For this reason, it can be used effectively for interpretation of information from op- erating plants, where planned experiments are impractical, as well as for laboratory experiments. First-degree multiple correlation has been used for many years, and was useful, but limited to linear or nearly linear relationships. The technique described in this paper provides a method for analyzing systems which may be non-linear. This particular technique is multiple correlation analysis in best-fitting third-degree parabolas. It is quite possible that lack of reference to the technique has been due to the overwhelming mass of computations it requires even for relatively simple problems. With the advent of computers, however, its use has become entirely feasible. For the benefit of those who may not be familiar with the subject, it might be well to pause at this point to discuss multiple correlation analysis — what it is and what it achieves. To go back to the old familiar fitting of a set of points with a best-fitting straight line by the least squares procedure, it is conceded that this a good method where there is only one independent variable influencing the dependent variable under consideration, and providing that the relationship is linear. In most fields of investigation, however, there are usually a number of factors exerting important influence, and they frequently bear relationships with the dependent variable other than straight line. Under these conditions, it is easy to see how misleading a simple correlation study might be. Multiple correlation can be used for any number of variables. Within the experience of the writer, this technique has been used to establish regression equations for determination of carbon rate, burden permeability, and production rate on iron blast furnaces, production rate on open hearth steel furnaces, life of molds for steel ingots, rolled steel tensile strength and various defects in rolled products, the performance of ore dressing equipment, and optimization of extractive metallurgical process variables. The discovery of mathematical correlation does not prove, per se, true cause-and-effect relationship, but simply establishes a hypothesis. If the regression equation can be used to make successful predictions of what will happen with future arrays of independent variables, then one can feel reasonably assured that true cause-and-effect relationships have been discovered.

THOUGH powder metallurgy is one of the oldest of metallurgical processes, it is in its infancy as a branch of the modern field of metallurgy. As early as 3000 B.C., the ancients produced implements and weapons of iron by reducing iron ore in a charcoal fire and forging the resultant sponge while still hot into the desired shape. Melting and casting soon superseded the powder metallurgy practice, and it was not until the turn of the twentieth century that powder metallurgy was applied to the commercial manufacture of tungsten lamp filaments. From this beginning, the use of the powder metallurgy process spread to the manufacture of porous oil-impregnated bearings, cemented carbide tools, contact points, diamond grinding wheels, clutch facings, starter brushes, resin-bonded radio cores, magnets, metallic filters, and other parts. More recently, and particularly during the present war, there has been a definite trend toward the manufacture of machine parts by this process in competition with the more conventional fabricating methods. Notwithstanding these many developments, scientific progress has been slow. While many articles on powder metallurgy have appeared in the press and various publications, there have been too few contributions to our technical societies, with the result that there is a dearth of the type of information necessary for the full development of this science. It is of primary importance that the results of research and development be freely disseminated if powder metallurgy is to realize its fullest potentialities. PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION Excluding the refractory metal field, all commercial powder metallurgical products made by a cold compressing and sintering operation contain voids. These voids can be substantially eliminated by subsequent severe working and heat-treatment, but such practice has not proved economical in most applications. By applying heat during the compressing operation, plastic deformation of the powder particles is substantially increased, and the resultant compact or briquette is practically free of voids. However, hot-pressing has many attendant problems, which at present preclude its use in the manufacture of precision parts. The more important of these are to devise: I. A die steel capable of withstanding high pressures at elevated temperatures. 2. A high-temperature lubricant capable of preventing excessive die wear and welding of the compact to the die walls. 3. A method of retaining a neutral or reducing atmosphere in the compacting zone of the die assembly. 4. A means of ejecting the hot-pressed specimen into a neutral atmosphere until reasonably cold.

The minerals barite (BaSO4) and witherite (BaCO3) are the chief sources of the element barium and its compounds needed for many industrial processes and products. Barite, the principal ore mineral, is found the world over and is abundant and widely distributed throughout the United States.3 Witherite is much less common than barite, though more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals. England is the chief producer of witherite. Witherite is not mined in the United States at the present time, but it has been mined with barite from a deposit at El Portal, California. Barite is also called barytes, tiff, cawk, or heavy spar. Ordinarily it is a heavy mineral that crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It is colorless, white, or gray, and transparent to opaque. In some deposits barite is black, yellow, brown, red, green, or blue because of included impurities. The streak is white and the luster vitreous to resinous or pearly. The specific gravity of pure barite (65.7 pct BaO and 34.3 pct SO3) is calculated to be 4.5, but inclusions and impurities in natural barite may reduce this value considerably. Well-formed crystals are generally tabular and have three cleavages. The barite of many deposits, however, has an uneven fracture and an apparent cleavage caused by separation along planes between successively deposited layers. The hardness is 2.5 to 3.5 on Mohs' scale. Commercially the terms "hard" and "soft" are used to refer to ease of grinding. Barite is relatively insoluble in water and acid, and thus can be used as a chemically inert material. Witherite, the natural carbonate of barium (77.7 pct BaO and 22.3 pct CO2), crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. The fracture is uneven and the luster is vitreous to resinous. The hardness is 3 to 3.5. The specific gravity of the pure mineral is calculated to be 4.29. It is transparent to opaque. The color is ordinarily white, gray, yellow, brown, or green. Geology and Distribution of Deposits Workable deposits of barite are widely distributed throughout the world in many geologic environments in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. Most deposits can be classified into three main types: (1) vein and cavityfilling deposits; (2) bedded deposits; and (3) residual deposits. 1. Vein and cavity-filling deposits are those in which barite and associated minerals occur along faults, gashes, joints, and bedding planes, and in breccia zones and solution channels. They also occur in various collapse and sink structures in limestone. Sharp contacts of the veins and cavity fillings with wall rocks are common. Barite cements fault and collapse breccia by replacement of the matrix or by filling voids. Large-scale replacement of the wall rocks beyond ore-controlling structures is rare. Barite in vein and cavity filling deposits is generally dense, "hard," and white to gray. Associated minerals are fluorite, calcite, ankerite, dolomite, quartz, and many sulfide minerals, especially pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite. Gold, silver, and rare earth minerals occur with barite in some deposits in the western United States. Barite is also a gangue mineral in metallic ore deposits but production as a byproduct from such deposits will be affected by many economic factors. INTRODUCTION-SYSTEM DESIGN The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights ; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. RECENTLY a comprehensive investigation of the various sigma binary alloys was published by Duwez and Baen.1 It was shown that the following conditions are necessary for the formation of the sigma phase: (1) the difference in atomic diameters of the two alloying metals must not be more than about 8 pct; (2) of the two elements which form sigma, one must exhibit a body-centered cubic structure while the second metal must be face-centered cubic, at least in one of its allotropic forms. In addition, a tetragonal unit cell was proposed and powder patterns of six sigma phases were indexed for d spacings greater than 1.640 kx. Since the indexing, based on tetragonal symmetry, led to only fair agreement, the possibility of sigma being orthorhombic was investigated. Various methods for indexing orthorhombic powder patterns are de- scribed in the literature.' The method used in this investigation was a graphical examination of the differences in values of sin' 9 for the adjacent lines of the powder diffraction pattern. This method led to a complete indexing of the Cr-Co (60-40) pattern. Because of the strong similarity between the various sigma alloys, it was then possible to assign indexes to the patterns of Fe-Cr (50-50), Fe-Cr-Mo (30-30-40), Fe-V (50-50), Co-V (50-50), and Ni-V (50-50). The values of sin' 9 and indexes of the six sigma alloys, together with visually estimated intensities, are presented in table 1. In general, the similitude between the six patterns is quite good. For spacings greater than 1.75 kx a few differences are noticeable. In the Ni-V pattern, no (320) exists and the two strong lines (030) and (031) are separated by only two lines of lower intensity, unlike any of the other sigma patterns. However, very little is known about the Ni-V phase diagram and it is possible that the equal atomic percentage composition in this system lies in a two-phase region. The partial molal volume of hydrogen is one of the parameters that describe the elastic interaction between the solute and the stress fields about inclusions, dislocations, and cracks. As such the partial molal volume is probably of importance in the elucidation of phenomena such as hydrogen embrittlement and hydrogen yield point. A knowledge of this quantity would also be helpful in thinking about the state of dissolved hydrogen in iron. However, because of the very low lattice solubility of hydrogen in iron the usual ways of determining the lattice expansion are not practicable. It is therefore of interest to apply the thermodynamics of stressed bodies to two sets of measurements of the effect of elastic stress upon the permeability of hydrogen in order to deduce a value of the partial molal volume, VH, of hydrogen dissolved in a iron. Beck ..' and previously de Kazinczy, observed that a uniaxial tensile stress increases the permeability of hydrogen in iron and in various steels. Beck et 01. employed Armco iron and A.I.S.I. 4340 steel, whereas de Kazinczy used a steel the composition of which was 0.13 C, 0.23 Si, 0.46 Mn, 0.006 P, and 0.038 S. Upon releasing the stress the permeability increment disappeared if the stress was below the elastic limit. Both investigators employed cathodic charging to introduce the hydrogen. de Kazinczy measured the permeation through a thin-walled tube by collecting the gas, whereas Beck et al. measured the permeation through sheets of various thicknesses by a very sensitive electrochemical technique. Both investigators measured the steady-state permeation at constant rate of hydrogen ion discharge, and Beck measured in addition the hydrogen diffusivity by a time-lag technique which is independent of the boundary conditions. Beck et al. and de Kazinczy found a linear relationship between log (J,/Jo) and the stress, where Ju/Jo is the ratio of the flux of hydrogen when the metal is under uniaxial tensile stress, a, to the flux under zero stress, for the same temperature and charging current. Beck et al. found in addition that the diffusivity of hydrogen is not changed by stress. Both investigators concluded that the observed change in permeability is due to an increase in hydrogen concentration, and furthermore that the increase in concentration is due directly to the thermodynamic effect of stress upon concentration. Accepting this assessment of the situation for reasons given below, one may use the equation3j4 in order to evaluate I/H, the partial molal volume of hydrogen. This equation is valid for the domain of a/E «¦ 1 (where E is the Young's modulus) and under the assumption that hydrogen expands the lattice isotrop-ically. From the data of Beck el al, one calculates V7H - 2.0 cu cm per g-atom, and from those of de Kazinczy one obtains 1.8 cu cm per g-atom. That the increase of concentration with stress is indeed of thermodynamic origin is attested to by the facts that the experimental results conform to the thermodynamic relation, Eq. [I], and that the results are the same whether a pure iron1 or each of two different steels172 is used. Neither of these facts wou1.d necessarily be expected if the effect of stress were, rather, to increase the ratio kn/k, of the kinetic factors of the following competing reactions: H(ads) — H (dissolved) Such a change of kinetics at the surface could be an alternative explanation of the effect of stress on the permeability. Although this writer does not deem this explanation to be the correct one for the reasons given above, it must be admitted that unambiguous proof that the phenomenon has a thermodynamic origin does not yet exist. Two kinds of experiments may be suggested. One is to plate a variety of metals on the input surface of the steel and repeat the stress experiment at a variety of hydrogen charging currents. The other is to employ somewhat thicker specimens in order to be able to apply uniaxial compressive stress. Eq. [I] shows that ln(c,/c,) depends on the sign of the stress, but it is difficult to see a physical basis for which k2/kl would depend on the sign of a. Unless present, in considerable praportion, metals of the precious-metal group—other than gold and silver—are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipitate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the precipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,l in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bismuth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez contains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donitk, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana2 says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most references on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

GOLD and beryllium form an intermediate phase composed of the two metals in equal atomic proportions and having the formula AuBe. According to Winkler,1 this phase probably exists in two modifications: beta, stable below about 600°C, and alpha, stable between 600°C and the melting point, about 740°C. Only the low- temperature beta form will be considered in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The gold used had a fineness of 999.75 to 999.85, balance mainly silver, and the beryllium purity was better than 99.8 pct. AuBe was prepared by melting the constituents in a beryllia crucible in an evacuated induction furnace. After melting and thorough mixing, the alloy was allowed to solidify in the crucible. No difficulty was encountered in obtaining a homogeneous ingot. Both chemical analysis and microscopic examination of the ingot showed that the alloy was essentially one phase, containing 50 at. pct gold. The alloy was quite brittle and powder samples could easily be pre- pared by grinding in an agate mortar. The X-ray diffraction patterns were made with CuK-alpha radiation in a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 57.3 mm in diameter. The film was placed unsymmetrically in the camera in order to afford a basis for am-shrinkage corrections. A sample homogenized at 5o0°C gave the same diffraction pattern as a sample taken from the as-melted ingot. GENERAL RESULTS The diffraction pattern of AuBe was readily indexed on the basis of a simple cubic lattice with ao = 4.659 ± 0.001kX. If the unit cell is assumed to contain four AuBe "molecules," the calculated X-ray density is 13.46 grams per cc as compared with the measured density of 13.55 gm per cc. The only missing reflections in the dsraction pattern are (100) and (220) (see Table I). Since these missing reflections are not those characteristic of body or face centering, the lattice of AuBe must be simple cubic. To locate the positions of the atoms within the unit cell, two possibilities had to be considered: I. The structure was disordered and there were eight positions to be filled by an "average" gold-beryllium atom. That the structure was disordered seemed unlikely since the lattice parameter did not vary with composition in alloys containing some- what more and somewhat less than 50 at. pct gold, indicating a fixed composition for AuBe.
