I DISAGREE with Mr. Brinsmade on several points, and I will discuss his remarks under the same six topics which he has used. 1. Rate of Interest Earned by Sinking-Fund.-I believe Mr. Brinsmade is confused in his ideas as to the effect of new gold on the interest earned on money. The flood of gold which he mentions certainly should not operate, to increase interest rates, but since it replaces and adds to liquid capital should reduce interest rates and counteract the destruction of liquid capital which he mentions. Furthermore, it is doubtful if the destruction of capital since 1897 by wars and catastrophes has been any greater in proportion than in similar periods before 1897. With regard to savings banks, I would say that only 3 per cent. is allowed on deposits through a large part of the West. As to bonds, they can be bought to yield any rate. of interest desired up to 6 per cent., but, a 5 per. cent. bond is not as safe as a 4 per cent. bond, nor a 4 per cent. bond as safe as a 3 per cent. government security. I do not understand why Mr. Brinsmade says that Mr. Denny's quoted opinion of a 3 per cent. rate is evidently based on English conditions before the Boer War. Certainly there is no reference to the Boer war or to English conditions in Mr. Denny's article. M. Howard Burnham, in his admirable work on mine valuation, says': ". For instance, redemption is taken at 3 per cent., because even 4 per cent. represents a greater risk, as is indicated by the purchase of Government paper to bear only 3 per cent., the great desideratum of the .latter being security." . Again, Mr. Burnham says:2 "The tables are calculated on the assumption that the dividends shall accumulate at 3 per cent. only, as in accordance with the general idea set out elsewhere, a rate greater than 3 per cent. involves appreciable risk with which it were inaccurate to saddle the sinking-fund if risks are to be segregated, this being the basis of all the writer's calculations."

THE year 1923 started a few days after the Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., discovered a 140,000-bbl. well at. La Rosa and a well of between 2500 and 5000 bbl. at La Paz, on the opposite side of Lake Maracaibo. These nearly simultaneous events changed, overnight, the general aspect of oil affairs in Venezuela. Up to that time, big things had been expected by the companies then in the district, but many major companies had shown little interest in the country. Within a few weeks the Pure Oil. Co. and the Gulf Oil Corpn. entered the field and acquired large properties. The Texas Co. purchased several concessions and the Standard of California, Atlantic Refining Co., and Mexican Petroleum Co. established offices. Representatives of many other companies visited the district during the first few months of the year. The sudden influx of buyers naturally caused a great rise in prices and this, together with overproduction in the United States, doubtless caused the slowing up of concession transfers in the latter part of the year. The following property transfers occurred: (1) The Gulf Oil Corpn. contract with the Maracaibo Oil Exploration Corpn., whereby the Gulf acquired the right to select 100,000 acres from the Maracaibo's zones. (2) The Gulf Co. purchase of one-quarter interest in seven concessions of the New England Oil Corpn., Ltd. (3) The Gulf Oil Corpn. purchase of several concessions of Kunhardt and others in the Perija district. (4) The Gulf Oil Corpn. purchase of certain portions of the one-kilometer Lake zone that were not covered by parcels or Government reserves (namely the "sobrantes"). (5) Pure Oil Co. purchase of all Government reserves turned back by Maracaibo Oil Exploration Corpn. in the districts of Mara and Miranda. (6) Standard Oil Co.: of New Jersey deal with the British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., for control of approxi-mately the eastern third of the .district of Buchivacoa, state of Falcon. (7) Royal Dutch deal with the British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., for the control of the central third of the district of Buchivacoa, Falcon. (8) The Texas Co. purchase of several concessions in Perija and one west of Mene Grande on the east side of Lake Maracaibo. (9) Purchase by the British Equatorial Oil Co., Ltd., of Goverment reserves corresponding to certain Creole Syndicate parcels under the margin of Lake Maracaibo near La Paz. (10) The Lago Petroleum Co. acquired a concession on all of Lake Maracaibo except a 1-Km. strip along the shore.

In presenting the subject of " Armored Turrets for Coast Defense " to this Institute, I am indebted to the Gruson Ironworks, a company incorporated under the laws of the State of New York, for valuable information, model and plans, by which I hope to make clear the construction and peculiar merits of this class of gun-protection. I wish it understood, however, that this is not an undeveloped and untried inventor's ideal, but an advanced and fully perfected system, which has long since passed the experimental stage and has been adopted by most of the foreign governments, after years of extensive experimenting and the expenditure of millions of dollars. The present seems an appropriate time to present the matter to the scientific public, since, for the first time, it is possible to produce these turrets in this country, of American material, and made by American workmen, owing to an agreement entered into between the Gruson Iron-works and the Fried. Krupp Grusonwerk, of Magdeburg-Buckau, Germany, where they have hitherto alone been manufactured. Although its full development and present perfection have been attained at the German works, it may be of historic interest to state that the first idea of using a rotating protected platform for large guns originated with Mr. Theo. Ruggles Timby, a native of the State of New York, who filed a caveat in 1843 for a " metallic revolving fort, to be used on land or water, and to be revolved by propelling engines located within the same and acting upon suitable mechanism." This was followed in 1862 by the issuance to Mr. Timby of two patents (No. 35,846 and No. 36,593) covering the ideas described in his caveat of 1843. Joseph E. Thropp, Jr., Indiana Harbor, Ind.:—To what do you attribute the fact that in some localities the by-product coke sells at a premium over the ordinary bee-hive coke for foundry use ? If the cell-structure is preferably soft and rather thick in coke for foundry use, as I understand it, do you mean that by-product coke has soft and thick cell-walls ? William H. Blauvelt, Syracuse, N. Y.:—As I say in one of the paragraphs of my paper, the tendency seems to be towards the manufacture of foundry- and furnace-coke under somewhat different conditions. The development of the best cell-structure in coke, of course, has not reached perfection, but we are making progress, and we are inclined to believe that under ordinary conditions the best furnace-coke, that is, coke with the hard cell-wall and the well-developed cell, is produced at fast coking-time and high heats, whereas the best foundry-coke seems to be produced at somewhat lower heats. In one of our plants we are making furnace-coke in 16-hr. coking-time, and foundry-coke in 20-hr. time. Foundry-men want the strong, tough coke. I think the furnace-men present will agree that the best furnace-practice requires a hard coke, with a well-developed cell-structure. Replying to the question as to the reason for higher prices being realized for by-product foundry-coke than for bee-hive coke, of course, the immediate reason is that it suits the foundry-men better. Perhaps one cause may be that we are able, by the selection of coals, which is not usually practicable at bee-hive plants, to get a quality and analysis best suited to foundry-work, with high carbon-content, and with cell-structure and physical strength especially suited to the foundry-men's ideas.

THE CHAIRMAN (WALTER DOUGLAS, NEW YORK, N. Y.).-Perhaps there is no problem that causes the modern metallurgist more worry than the question of unaccounted for loss. He has not the advantage of the metallurgist of the early days here, who could sleep peaceably with the settled conviction that there were certain copper mineral constituents of the ore which were volatile, and there was therefore nothing to worry about. The slag contents and volatilization accounted for the balance of the copper that went in the top of the furnace after the weighing of the bullion. There have been great strides in recent years toward reducing this loss. Perhaps the Anaconda company is the one we have to thank for the original pioneer work along the lines which we are all today following. We would be glad to hear from some gentlemen present with reference to their experience with this question of dust losses. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-You mentioned the Anaconda company, Mr. Chairman. I would like to say something about what we have been doing there, and the troubles we have been having. We have a tremendous volume of .gas to handle. We adopted the system of large chambers, lessening the velocity of gases, and incidentally cooling the gases. Unfortunately in one sense and fortunately in another, we were compelled to increase the amount of gas handled in the flue system, and the results were then not so good. Still, we get a very good recovery. Our system of taking a sample is similar to the one described by the writer of the paper. We have tried all kinds of apparatus for getting a fair sample. We divided the area of the flue into imaginary squares, and have taken samples for a certain period of time from each square; and have used the asbestos bags. At present, there is a large unit of the Cottrell apparatus almost ready to connect up on the roaster flue to catch the dust from flotation concentrates. The worst things smelters have to handle at the present clay, they are coming in the Southwest as well as the Northwest, are of material much of which is as small as 500 mesh, and the ordinary methods of catching dust will not apply to flotation concentrates. The Cottrell process is going to be tried out at our plant for this material. We have devised special forms, with a view to preventing the formation of dust from this material, and we are pleased with the results so far obtained. There is another point in connection with this subject that I want to put before the members here, so they will be thinking about it. Discussion of the paper of Reno H. Sales, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1524 to 1626. L. C. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.:-It has been my privilege to read with some care Mr. Sales's paper, and I feel it a sense of duty and a pleasure to discuss it briefly. After two months spent underground in the Butte mines by my associates-Messrs. Augustus Locke, A. M. Bateman, and E. H. Perry-and myself, it seems only fair to record our appreciation of the almost baffling structural complexity of the Butte veins, of the remarkable accuracy with which their mechanical details have been worked out, and of the unusually effective and intelligent use of geologic conceptions in interpreting their subtler characters and significance. During this period, under the courteous and helpful guidance of either Mr. Sales, the members of his staff, or the geologists of other companies, we have been afforded opportunity to test many of the conclusions embodied in the present paper, and it is but just to state that as our observations have accumulated sufficiently the great majority of these conclusions have received unquestioned confirmation in our minds. The pleasure consists in realization that the science of mining geology, to which so many of us have devoted ourselves, actually embraces the possibilities that this paper exhibits. The science of geology has been favored by many brilliant contributions of general nature, and by a smaller number of studies remarkable because of their detail and precision. I know, however, of no other piece of work like this, which, including Mr. Winchell's administration, virtually represents the combined results of over 15 years of work by a staff of trained geologists in a district which measures not much more from end to end than it now does from top to bottom. That this concentration of effort and observation has been required, and that it has been repaid by the results attained, are plentifully evident in Mr. Sales's paper. If one were inclined to doubt this after perusal of the text, surely he would be convinced by the maps and sections, several of which, I venture to say, are unapproached in detail and accuracy by anything attempted before.

THE mine here described is in the Witbank district, a coal area of the Transvaal, about 100 miles north- east of Johannesburg. and is owned by the Witbank Colliery, Ltd. The plant has a capacity of 4000 tons per eight hours, and prepares five sizes of coal. The coal seam lies at a depth of about 200 ft. below the surface, and is reached by an inclined shaft sunk at an angle of 18° with the horizontal. Although the thickness of the coal seam varies from 10 to 14 ft. or more, only about a 7-ft. bench is mined. Mining is by the hord and pillar system. Bords are driven 18 ft. wide, with pillars measuring 18 ft. square. The mine is laid out into four sections, each sewed by a main haulage way from the shaft. Arc-wall machines are used for cutting the coal. but all loading is done by hand. Native labor is employed under the supervision of white miners, who do the required blasting. The workings are practically free from gas and water, and very little timber is needed.

Pressure-composition isotherms have been determinedfor the systems ZrMo2 -H2 between 0" and 900°C at hydrogen pressures between 10-4 and 760 Torr. Tkese studies plus X-ray diffraction analyses of selected compositions show that these intermetallic compounds form a complete series of hydrogen solid solutions within this temperature and pressure range. The partial molar enthalpies and entropies of solution of hydrogen in the three intermetallic compounds were calculated. The solubility of hydrogen in these Laves phases can be related to their free electron concentration. ThE reaction of hydrogen with inter metallic compounds of zirconium with Laves phase-type structure has both theoretical and practical interest. The in-termetallic compounds have structures different from any of the pure metals. In addition the electron to atom ratio of the intermetallics varies appreciably. In the nuclear materials field, these materials are of interest since intermetallic compounds may exist as precipitates in commercial zirconium alloys with transition metals. From studies on the hydrogen reaction, one can establish the stability of the intermetallic compounds relative to the hydrides of the component metals. The intermetallic compounds may also be used as getters for hydrogen and as materials for hydrogen storage. This paper will present the results of equilibrium and structural investigations of the ZrCr2-H2, the ZrV2-H2, and the ZrMo2-H2 systems for the temperature range of 0" to 900°C and the pressure range of Torr to 1 atm. A complete thermochemical analysis will be made of the measurements. Some of the results have been referred to in a survey paper' covering the types of hydrogen behavior observed in zirconium alloys. LITERATURE ZrCr2 is the only intermetallic phase in the Zr-Cr system.' It exists in two allotropic modifications. Between 900" and 1000°C the hexagonal MgZa (C14) structure transforms into the cubic MgCu2 (C15) structure. Beck4 has previously shown that the intermetallic ZrCrz takes up hydrogen into solid solution up to a composition H/ZrCr2 = 1.14 at room temperature and 1 atm hydrogen. A ZrCr2 hydride was stated to have a fcc structure. The binary Zr-V system has been investigated by williams5 although Rostoker and Yamamoto 6 had given earlier a partial phase diagram. ZrV2 was the only intermediate phase found in the system. wallbaum7 reported earlier that the compound ZrV2 hp the MgZm (CJ4) type structure with a = 5.288A and c = 8.664A. This was not comfirmed by Elliot8 nor by Matthias, Compton, and corenzwit9 who reported that ZrV2 has a cubic MgCua LC15) type structure. The latter authors gave a = 7.429A. Also, several authors do not agree on the temperature of the peri-tectic horizontal. It appears that ZrV2 may exist in several modifications. A high capacity for occluding hydrogen was reported by Beck4 who found H/ZrV2 = 1.38 at room temperature and 1 atm of hydrogen. ZrMoz is the only intermetallic phase in the Zr-Mo system.10 ZrMoa is formed by a peritectic reaction of the melt with a molybdenum-rich solid solution. ZrMo2 has the C15-type structure with a = 7.59A. MATERIALS High-purity chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum were used together with grade 1 crystal bar zirconium to prepare the alloys. Discussion of the paper of Max Boehmer, presented at the Pittsburg meeting, March, 1910, and printed in Bulletin. No. 38, February, 1910, pp. 119 to 122. W. MORTON WEBB, Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa (communication to the Secretary*):-The experience of Mr. Boehmer in the Leadville district and his reputation as an engineer assure the interest of anything he may write on the ore-bodies of that district; and all engineers who have operated in Leadville will agree that the theory of the origin of the Leadville deposits, as given by Mr. Emmons in his famous monograph, does not adequately explain the genesis of all the deposits. The solution of the problem does not, however, appear to be quite so simple as Mr. Boehmer would make it; and the advance pamphlet issued by the U. S. Geological Survey, pending the completion of the main report, shows that there is still much ground for controversy. No doubt the later eruptives had a greater influence on the deposition of the ore-bodies than was thought at the time of the first investigation by the Survey; but it has always appeared to me that the influence exerted by these dikes was more in the nature of a physical than a chemical one. The weight of evidence in recent years is mostly in the direction of ascension rather than lateral secretion; and one of the strongest evidences is the fact that most of the ore-bodies lie under one of the comparatively impervious layers which help to make up the structure of these hills. On Iron hill I have found a very persistent white porphyry sheet, split off from the overlying porphyry and lying from 30 to 60 ft. below the main white porphyry and blue limestone contact. This sheet varies from a few to 50 ft. in thickness, and where found adds another "contact" to that region ; some of the largest ore-bodies on Iron hill lie immediately under this sheet. The chance that a Howe Memorial Lecturer will be able to refer back to a personal contact with the distinguished metallurgist for whom this lectureship is named grows steadily I I did not have the pleasure of his personal acquaintance, but I did receive from him in 1916, quite unexpectedly, a letter commenting On a paper that I had recently published27 On "Types of Prismatic Structure in Igneous Rocks." The paper was written for geologists and petrologists, but it had an application, naturally, to the crystallization of iron and steel in a mold. The letter impressed me at the time, and still does, with the breadth of of Howe's interests and his perseverance in keeping up with the progress of any branch of knowledge that had metallurgical connotations. Scope of the Lecture During several years preceding the date mentioned I had worked in collaboration with Arthur L. Day and E. T. Allen8 at the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, on the temperature scale as defined by the nitrogen thermometer at high temperatures. Later (1928-1947) I had the opportunity of helping to apply this experience to the pyro-metric problems of the steel industry. Because of the range of its temperatures, the multiplicity of the methods used, and the variety of its purposes, pyrometry in the open-hearth process has always offered a fertile field for both research and development. I am therefore devoting an hour to the subject of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace, the furnace that makes most of our steel in the united States. I would direct your attention particularly to the choice of the first two words in the title of the Lecture. One sometimes hears or reads of the ((temperature of such-and-such a furnace," as if it were a single, measurable, characteristic quantity. I need hardly emphasize to any one who has ever operated a furnace or a kiln that " temperature of the furnace " is a meaningless phrase. Even if we confine our attention to the space enclosed by the roof, walls, and hearth of an open-hearth furnace, it is doubtful whether any such space has ever been so uniform in temperature that the phrase would have a meaning. In any furnace, there are many different temperatures, capable of being measured at many different places, and actually being measured for several different purposes. These pyrometric purposes, methods, and results, if given in detail, would expand this lecture into a book on the basic open-hearth process. I must therefore confine myself to a statement of the range of temperatures as they have been observed in various parts of the furnace, indicating in a general way why they are measured, and mentioning the methods that are available without attempting to describe these

The winning of zinc and lead ores from the comparatively shallow deposits of the Joplin district presents few such problems for the mining engineer as are encountered in deep ore mining and in the handling of complex ores. However, for those who are interested in the origin and nature of ore deposits in general, there is much here to investigate, and upon studies in this direction will depend, in no small measure, the future of an industry that has produced during the year 1916, in southwest Missouri, lead and zinc ores to the value of $26,319,383; adding $46,022,164 to the metallic wealth of the nation. Including the adjacent mines in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, and Cherokee County, Kansas, which are really continuations of the Joplin district, the total value of ores produced reached the sum of $34,089,503, and that of the metals, $58,927,941.l The ores produced in the Joplin district are remarkable on account of their almost uniformly high metal content in both lead and zinc. Their superiority in this regard is unparalleled, and is doubtless due to certain geological conditions that are now possibly explicable, provided that the artesian circulation = ascension hypothesis of the origin of the ore deposits is proved beyond question to be the only tenable explanation of the facts. These, as well as other valuable zinc-ore deposits, are bound to be exhausted in time, for ordinary mining purposes, and it concerns the mining engineer that the conditions under which ores of this character were actually deposited in the form in which they occur, may, if possible, be ascertained, in order that he may learn where to look for similar deposits in other regions, or even how to reproduce artificially such condi-

BASIC mineral commodities may be divided into two general classifications in their market or price characteristics. In one class are commodities sold on a world-wide basis, as gold, silver, nickel, asbestos and petroleum, and in the second are those produced and sold locally. Of course, no precise line of demarcation exists between the two; coal, for instance, belongs more or less in both. If there are enough producers of any commodity to prevent control of production by any one person or group, a free market then exists and the price in a buyer's market is determined by the most favored producer-meaning the producer, with the lowest production cost or the lowest cost of transportation, or both, to the particular market, or place of use. With minerals in the first classification, their high intrinsic value far outweighs the transportation cost and a uniform market price is accepted as an essential element in the economy of distribution. But with common minerals of small. intrinsic value and relatively high transportation costs, economists are reluctant to admit that a uniform price may also be an essential element in distribution.

The titaniferous magnetite deposit at Iron Mountain, Wyoming, is in Precambrian anorthosite. Individual ore bodies are lenses, commonly arranged en echelon, conformable to the platy crystal structure and compositional layering of the anorthosite; a few transect these features at various angles. The ore bodies are on the east flank of the principal anticline in the anorthosite mass. Magnetite and ilmenite, accompanied by spine!, are the ore minerals. The principal gangue minerals are olivine, which was introduced with the ore, and plagioclase, the chief constituent of the anorthosite. The anticlinal region appears to have been a structurally weak zone, and westward-bowing curves of the axis were especially favorable sites for localization of the two largest massive ore bodies. These bodies are synclinal and plunge southeast. The proportion of magnetite-ilmenite to olivine and to anorthosite appears to be related to structural features. Where magnetite-ilmenite is present with olivine, the magnetite-ilmenite is encountered along the most pronounced parts of a fold where anorthite content is highest, whereas olivine is associated principally with more gently folded portions. During granulation and recrystallization of the anorthosite mass, temperature and pressure changes furnished the energy required to release and mobilize iron and other elements that migrated to areas of low pressure, the ore zone. Some iron and magnesium may have combined with silica from partly dissociated plagioclase to form olivine. The ore formed by replacement of anorthosite as indicated by: (1) the marked changes in mineralogy along strike, dip, and plunge of an ore body; (2) the concentration of massive ore in folds and olivine on limbs; ( 3) the halo of low-grade mineralized rock that transects the structure of the anorthosite in the hanging wall; and ( 4) the layering in the large southern ore body, that strikes more easterly than the trend of the body.
