In planning and designing of underground excavations and construction, it is of considerable importance that the stresses and displacements in the rock mass subjected to arbitrary sequences of unloading and loading be within allowable limits. For determination of the stress and displacement fields, the usual approach is to treat the rock as an elastic material and to apply the principles of the theory of elasticity. However, analytic solutions are available only for a limited class of problems of simple geometry and idealized material properties. Nonhomogeneity and anisotropy of material coupled with complex geometrical configuration and initial stress fields that are almost always preexistent in rock masses at great depths, render the problem intractable by analytical methods. Approximate solution techniques using numerical procedures have, therefore, to be resorted to. The finite element method as applied to plane stress analysis was introduced by Clough.1 It has developed into a powerful tool for the analysis of various field problems in structural and continuum mechanics. The method is well documented in the literature2-6 and, therefore, its historical development will not be discussed here. Wilson's analysis of the plane stress/strain problem has found extensive use in the area of soil and rock mechanics including stresses around underground openings; stresses and displacements in dams, foundations, etc.7-11 In his analysis of the axisymmetric solid,3 Wilson proposed a procedure to allow for certain cases of nonlinear material properties. AN ounce of prevention is worth A a pound of cure' is an old proverb that has sometimes been forgotten in programs having to do with the health of workmen. Realization of the truth of this maxim is increasing, however, and today the iron-mining industry, with which I am particularly concerned, is becoming more alive to the prevention of illness and the conservation of health, thus decreasing the need for treatment after diagnosis has established its necessity. The healthy workman is the happy, efficient workman, and new programs tending to make him more health-minded are being put into operation. Preventive medicine is less costly than corrective medicine, to say nothing of the better results obtained. Periodic physical examinations, with close follow-up attention when required, have reduced the time lost because of illness, workmen's compensation costs, and group-insurance benefits for nonindustrial disabilities.

At LKAB Central Division for Metallurgical Research at Malmberget, Sweden, fired pellets are examined in respect to mechanical and reduction properties. The paper deals with descriptions of the test methods. It also involves the rationale for the choice of these tests. Their correlation to the blast furnace operation will be examined. The mechanical tests used are the ISO-tumbler test and the cold compression strength test. Concerning the metallurgical properties, experiments have shown that some superbasic pellets in particular have different disintegration properties in different temperature ranges. Pellets which have favorable reduction properties when tested under isothermal reduction at high temperature may disintegrate to a large extent under low temperature reduction. This is also valid for some types of acid pellets. Consequently, it was found to be necessary to determine the reduction strength both at high and low temperatures. In the low temperature range, the disintegration is measured by tumbling the pellets in soft reducing conditions at 600°C in a modified Linder test equipment. The high temperature reduction strength is determined under load in the Burghardt-Grebe equipment. However, in order to get more information of the high temperature strength, LKAB intends to introduce a softening test. The tendency of high temperature disintegration will also turn up in the swelling test. The swelling properties are examined according to a procedure developed at LKAB. In this test the pellets are subjected to free swelling without mutual contact. The reducibility of the pellets is recorded in the swelling test.

AMONG the minerals exhibited at the Atlanta Exhibition of 1881, soapstone, kaolin, and asbestos were well represented. The first two occur in large quantities, of very pure quality, throughout the South. The last is somewhat limited in amount, yet in certain localities it exists in masses sufficiently large to pay for working; in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama it has been mined with some profit. I would, in this paper, call special attention to the minerals soapstone and kaolin, because their many valuable qualities seem to have been al most entirely overlooked by our Southern manufacturers. Steatite, particularly, occurs in such large quantities, and generally in such close proximity to the great iron regions of Alabama and Georgia, that it is amazing that the iron companies will persist in sending abroad under. heavy expense for firebrick. It would require a much smaller sum of money to quarry this rock and place it at the various furnaces ; and the results obtained, I am sure, would prove its superiority over the majority of firebrick brought into this region. Soapstone, as well as kaolin, is found throughout the metamorphic regions of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Below-will be found seven analyses that I have made of this mineral, taken from various points in the four States above mentioned. I have also subjected these same specimens to severe fire-tests, and the results were very satisfactory. The tests were conducted in the following manner: Small portions of the compact variety were carefully weighed and placed in a Fletcher's new crucible furnace for gas, and subjected for half an hour to a heat that will in 12 minutes fuse iron. The only effect upon these specimens was a slight change in color .to a darker shade, a small loss in weight, due evidently to the evaporation of water, and, in one or two specimens, a slight degree of fusion on the sharp edges. The first specimen subjected to investigation was taken from a large outcropping in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Specific gravity, 2.88 ; hardness, 1.9; color, blue gray. The alloys formed by the addition of nickel to iron by conventional metallurgical procedures show physical properties that differ widely from those of the individual metals. The effect of alloying on the mechanical properties is most pronounced in alloys containing between 15 and 25 per cent nickel. The tensile strength of an alloy containing, for example, 20 per cent nickel and 80 per cent iron (with 0.06 per cent carbon), in an annealed condition, is above 150,000 lb. per sq. in.$ owing to a martensitic type of transformation, as compared with about 50,000 lb. per sq. in. for pure iron in the same condition. The object of this work was to determine whether the same beneficial alloying effect coulcl be obtained in alloys of iron and nickel prepared by powder metallurgy technique. Procedure Bars and pellets for tension and compression tests, respectively, were made. Two groups of specimens were prepared: (I) by cold-pressing the powders and sintering; (2) by cold-pressing the powders, sintering, repressing and resintering. Raw Materials Nickel powder supplied by Metals Disintegrating Co., marked MD-151, was used. A typical analysis of this powder was as follows: sulphur, 0.040 per cent; copper, 0.18; iron, 0.23; manganese, 0.002; magnesium, o.oo15; lead, 0.035; tin> 0.025; silicon, 0.08; chromium, 0.008. Electrolytic iron powder supplied by Plastic Metals Inc. was used. A repre-sentative chemical analysis for impurities other than gases, supplied by the vendor, gave the following results: carbon, 0.005 per cent; manganese, 0.002; silicon, 0.003; phosphorus, 0.001; sulphur, 0.004; nickel, 0.008. The fractions from these powders passing a 325-mesh sieve were reduced in hydrogen at 600°C. for one hour, to clean the sur-faces of the particles. The reduced pow-ders, slightly caked, were ground in a mortar and screened again through a 325-mesh sieve. Mixing The proper proportions of the powders were mixed overnight on rolls, in glass jars fitted with iron-wire baffles to break aggregates of particles that might form. Pressing All specimens were compacted on hy-draulic presses. The pellets were com-pacted in a cylindrical die, 34-in. diameter. The ratio of thickness to the diameter of the pellets was maintained as nearly as possible at 0.9, as specified for standard short compression pieces. THE ore that is being treated by the present plant lies between the leached zone, or capping, and the mixed sulfide and oxide zone. The principal copper minerals are chalcanthite (CuSO4.5H20), brochantite (CuS04 3Cu (OH)2) and atacarnite, (CuC12.3Cu (OH)2). There are, in addition, some other minerals such as cuprite and kröhnkite (CuSO4. Na2SO4.2H20). These minerals, with many others, occur in a greatly crushed granodiorite rock. Most of the copper-bearing minerals occur in the cracks and veinlets, but there are disseminated values and it is probably the relative proportion of these that accounts for some otherwise unexplainable variations in extraction. The entire mineralization of the ore is complex and varies with depth. This variation, the problems presented thereby, and the effect of various constituents of the ore will be taken up in detail. In 1900, when. the public first heard of "secondary enrichment," the Butte chalcocite seemed clearly supergene. Mining, through successive regions of leached capping, bonanza sulfide, and sulfide less rich, had paused at lean bottom levels which, though chalcocite-bearing, suggested the waning of copper. The deepest chalcocite, at 1500 ft., was yet too shallow to disturb the supergene hypothesis. But, with deeper mining, lean levels yielded to fat ones. Here and there they showed, within the same vein, an inverted distribution, chalcopyrite above and chalcocite below. To the miners' astonishment, they carried chal-cocite, unaffected by cross faults, on an independent course to the depth of 2500 ft. The pattern of ore distribution, hitherto revealed only in fragments, was now appearing in perspective, and, in the depth of the chalcocite, was beginning to make Butte differ from all districts where the chalcocite is indubitably supergene. The idea of hypogene origin at length came into favor; by 1913, when Sales' advocated this origin, the argument had become a powerful one. This argument rested on field evidence; but, already, there was beginning to emerge microscopic evidence not included in this argument. Especially pertinent was the proof that (1) the deep chalcocite lies in-mixed with bornite, often microscopic; (2) the deep chalcocite often replaces bornite; and (3) replacement of bornite by chalcocite is accomplished more easily than that of pyrite, enargite, or chalcopyrite. Although the mechanical and chemical characteristics of certain iron-nickel-silicon alloys have been investigated,1 the available literature shows no results of a systematic investigation of the constitution of this system. 'This paper describes the results of an X-ray investigation of the constitution of the iron-rich iron-nickel-silicon alloys at 600°C. Data 011 the constitution of the included binary systems obtained in other investigations have been correlated with the structure of the ternary alloys. Jette and Foote2 have presented a tentative constitutional diagram of the iron-nickel system. following X-ray studies on quenched specimens. This diagram shows that the alloys at 600°C. containing from zero to approximately 4 atomic per cent nickel consist of a body-centered cubic (alpha) phase, the alloys containing 4 to 24 atomic per cent nickel consist of body-centered cubic (alpha) and face-centered cubic (gamma) phases, and the alloys containing from 24 to Ioo atomic per cent nickel consist of a face-centered cubic (gamma) phase. These investigators recognized that it was not possible to retain the gamma phase in equilibrium by quenching alloys containing less than approximately 25 atomic per cent nickel and that high-temperature X-ray methods were desirable to determine the gamma-phase solubility limit. In a later investigation of the iron-nickel alloys, Owen and Sulley3 determined the alpha-phase solid solubility limit to be 3.5 atomic per cent nickel at 600°C. High-temperature X-ray methods showed the solid solubility limit of the gamma phase to be 14 atomic per cent nickel at 600°C. Since the high-temperature X-ray method should reveal equilibrium conditions in these alloys better than the quench method of other investigators, the results of Owen and Sulley pertaining to the gamma-phase boundary are to be preferred. As the result of an X-ray investigation of quenched iron-silicon alloys, Greiner and Jette4 have shown these materials to consist of a body-centered cubic (alpha) phase containing from o to 26.4 atomic per cent silicon at 600°C. The alloys containing from 26.4 to approximately 50 atomic per cent silicon consist of two phases at 600°C.; namely, alpha and eta. The eta phase corresponds to the stoichiometrical formula FeSi (33.4 wt per cent Si)." The literature pertaining to the constitution of the nickel-silicon alloys has been reviewed by Ackerman,' who found disagreements in the results of various investigators on several parts of the system. Subsequent data on the constitution of the nickel-silicon alloys were reported by oSawa and okamoto.6

In my address on the " Geognostical Relations of the Metals," delivered before the Institute on the 20th of February last (Vol. I Transactions, p. 331), I spoke of the rocks in the vicinity of Thunder Bay, Lake Superior, where I indicated two series of uncrystalline rocks resting upon the Huronian schists, the lower one consisting of dark-colored argillites and sandstones overlaid, apparently in slight discordance, by nearly horizontal red and white sandstone and marls, which were compared with those of Sault Ste. Marie, and those of the Portage Lake district, on the south shore. These latter sandstones, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie uncomformably the Keweenaw series of copper-bearing amygdaloids, sandstones, and conglomerates, and are in turn overlaid by the Trenton limestone. I then proposed to call this lower series of Thunder Bay, that is to say, the dark-colored argillites and sandstones which are traversed by the silver-bearing lodes of that region, the Animikie group. Shortly after the publication of that address I received an abstract of a paper on the geology of that region by Professor Robert Bell, read before the Montreal Natural History Society, February 24th. He there confirms the statement made in my address that the gold of Lake Shebandowan occurs in the Huronian, which is also seen to be cut by the silver-bearing lodes just mentioned. Professor Bell, in this paper, proposes to designate both what I have called the Animikie group, and the overlying red and white sandstones, by the name of the Nepigon group, for the reason that the upper series is best displayed about Lake Nepigon. This latter series is by Logan supposed to be overlaid by the copper-bearing amygdaloids with conglomerates and sandstones of the north shore (apparently identical with those of Keweenaw); and the whole together, inclnding the Animikie group, constitute his Upper Copper-bearing group. These copper-bearing strata are by him supposed to be overlaid by the red and white sandstones of St. Mary, which are apparently the same with those sandstones which, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the similar cupriferous rocks of Portage Lake, and are, in their turn, overlaid by the Trenton limestone. The early stages of nucleation of vacuunz-deposited gold coatings on electropolished surfaces of pure nickel and binary alloys of Ni-A1 and Ni-Ti have been studied, employing carefully controlled temperature and vacuum conditions. The preferential nucleation of gold on slip-plane edges on the crystal surfaces gave rise to a very pronounced decoration effect which was used in studying the morphology of the pain boundaries, etch pits, and slip planes on crystal faces. Characteristic surface patterns were observed with local dimensional variations. Most pronounced geometric patterns were ohserved in the pain boundaries of nickel and on the crystal faces of Ni-A1 alloy. The nucleation behauior of gold indicates contamination on the Ni-T1 alloy and the getter properties of titanium are presented as a tentative interpretation for the detected contamination. The markings and imperfections on cleavage surfaces of crystals have long been observed by optical microscopy.1,2 Surface-replica techniques are also used to detect the smallest steps and structural details on crystal surfaces by electron microscopy. Recently, Bassett3-5 and Sella, Conjeaud, and Trillat 6 have shown that, when gold is deposited onto a rocksalt cleavage surface, there is preferential nucleation at steps and slip-plane edges on the crystal surface. This gives rise to a very pronounced decoration effect which is invaluable for revealing the lattice steps on a cleavage surface. According to Bassett,3 gold atoms arriving during vacuum evaporation at the crystal surface have a certain mobility on the surface after arrival, particularly at elevated temperature. BUT little was known of the coals of Southeastern Ohio until the present survey of the State under Dr. Newberry began its work. The results of the geological investigations of Prof. E. B. Andrews in this region, and of the chemical investigations of Prof. T. G. Wormley, both of which appear in the reports of the survey for 1869 and 1874, and more recent special reports by the former, together with some data for which I am indebted to the kindness of Dr. Newberry, and my own limited observations, have served me for the preparation of the following notice of the coals lying on the western border of the great Appalachian coal-basin in the region drained by the Hocking River and its tributaries, and belonging to the Lower Coal-Measures. Some uncertainty exists as to the place in the succession of the lower coals to be assigned to the seams known and mined in the Hocking Valley. It is the opinion of Prof. Andrews that the inequalities of the original surface were such that we cannot identify in that region the lowest coals known in Northwestern Pennsylvania and the contiguous parts of Ohio, but that we must rather count from above downwards. These conclusions Dr. Newberry is not prepared to accept, and further researches will be necessary before certainty can be attained in this matter. Meanwhile it seems, from a study of its relations to the Pomeroy or Pittsburgh seam, that what is known as the great vein of the Hocking Valley, occupies the horizon of the Upper Freeport coal, E of the Pennsylvania survey, or No. 6 in Dr. Newberry's enumeration, counting from the base. This seam, in the region in question. assumes certain characteristics which, taken in connection with its geographical position, give it a great importance among the coals of the State. The area to be noticed includes the whole or parts of several townships in Perry, Hocking, Vinton, and Athens Counties, lying near the margin of the basin over which the vein in question assumes the character of a dry-burning or splint coal, and has a thickness varying from six to ten and even twelve feet. Its precise limit southward cannot at present be clearly defined, but it has been found as far south as the line of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, with a thickness of six feet, and is mined at various points along the valley of the Hocking River, near Nelsonville, where it attains six or seven feet. Meanwhile it seems, from a study of its relations to the Pomeroy or Pittsburgh seam, that what is known as the great vein of the Hocking Valley, occupies the horizon of the Upper Freeport coal, E of the Pennsylvania survey, or No. 6 in Dr. Newberry's enumeration, counting from the base. This seam, in the region in question. assumes certain characteristics which, taken in connection with its geographical position, give it a great importance among the coals of the State. The area to be noticed includes the whole or parts of several townships in Perry, Hocking, Vinton, and Athens Counties, lying near the margin of the basin over which the vein in question assumes the character of a dry-burning or splint coal, and has a thickness varying from six to ten and even twelve feet. Its precise limit southward cannot at present be clearly defined, but it has been found as far south as the line of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, with a thickness of six feet, and is mined at various points along the valley of the Hocking River, near Nelsonville, where it attains six or seven feet. IN our never ending search for new and better ways of underground mining, we find that transportation has had its share of new ideas in the past few years. The old and still effective method of track haulage has had some competition from rubber tired cars and belt conveyors, each of which has its own safety hazards which demand close scrutiny in any safety study. The use of shuttle cars, in particular, has introduced clearance hazards caused by the absence of the more or less positive guides formed by the rails of a track sys¬tem; likewise the requirement of greater clearance tends to increase roof hazards which we all know to be great enough with the best of methods. However, the subject of transportation hazards is too broad to be covered entirely in one paper, so I will confine myself to track methods which carry the preponderance of underground tonnage. I am quite sure that to this group it is an evident fact that haulage accidents are of major importance. However, to stress the point, it may be well to look at a few figures. IN my address on the " Geognostical Relations of the Metals," delivered before the Institute on the 20th of February last (Vol. I Transactions, p. 331), I spoke of the rocks in the vicinity of Thunder Bay, Lake Superior, where I indicated two series of uncrystalline rocks resting upon the Huronian schists, the lower one consisting of dark-colored argillites and sandstones overlaid, apparently in slight discordance, by nearly horizontal red and white sandstone and marls, which were compared with those of Sault Ste. Marie, and those of the Portage Lake district, on the south shore. These latter sand-stones, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the Keweenaw series of copper-bearing amygdaloids, sandstones, and conglomerates, and are in turn overlaid by the Trenton limestone. I then proposed to call this lower series of Thunder Bay, that is to say, the dark-colored argillites and sandstones which are traversed by the silver-bearing lodes of that region, the Animikie group. Shortly after the publication of that address I received an abstract of a paper on the geology of that region by Professor Robert Bell, read before the Montreal Natural History Society, February 24th. He there confirms the statement made in my address that the gold of Lake Shebandowan occurs in the Huronian, which is also seen to be cut by the silver-bearing lodes just mentioned. Professor Bell, in this paper, proposes to designate both what I have called the Animikie group, and the overlying red and white sandstones, by the name of the Nepigon group, for the reason that the upper series is best displayed about Lake Nepigon. This latter series is by Logan supposed to be overlaid by the copper-bearing amygdaloids with conglomerates and sandstones of the north shore (apparently identical with those of Keweenaw) ; and the whole together, including the Animikie group, constitute his Upper Copper-bearing group. These copper-bearing strata are by him supposed to be overlaid by the red and white sandstones of St. Mary, which are apparently the same with those sandstones which, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the similar cupriferous rocks of Portage Lake, and are, in their turn, overlaid by the Trenton limestone. Impurity-induced low-temperature recrystallization of cold-worked tungsten was inuestigated with emphasis on the influence of nickel on the reaction. Palladium, nickel, aluminum, manganese, platinum, and iron greatly lower the recrystallization temperature of doped tungsten, which zs normally very high, but the recrystallization temperature of electron-be am zone-refined tungsten wzre is slightly raised by conlacl with nickel. Recrystallization can be induced at low temperature by the presence of solid nickel on the surface of doped tungsten wire, but apparently not by exposure to nickel vapors alone. Approximately 200 ppm of Ni dijjused into 10-mil wires at 1200 from a deposit of nickel on the surface produced total recrystallization, whereas more than 600 ppm of Ni could be absorbed frotn a vapor source without altering the fibrous structure of cold-worked tungsten. Once initiated, nickel-induced recrystallization required a continued source of' nickel for propagation of the recrystallization front. The solubility of nickel in fibrous 10-mil W wire was approximalely 500 ppm at 1150' C, and the activation energy for penetration of the recrystallization front was 52 kcal per mole. In many applications the usefulness of tungsten depends on critical control of its structure. Cold-worked tungsten with the fibrous structure developed by suitable thermo-mechanical treatment has a low, but technologically significant, ductility. It has long been known1 that traces of nickel, and perhaps other metals, are profoundly deleterious in doped tungsten, because they induce recrystallization at low temperature, which produces a brittle, equiaxed grain structure. This effect appears to be an exception to the general observation that recrystallization is impeded and the recrystallization temperature raised by the presence of impurities.2"9 Previous studies7-'' of the annealing and recrystallization of tungsten wire have divided the phenomenon into prior recovery stages, primary recrystallization and secondary recrystallization. The present investigation is concerned principally with primary recrystallization which is defined here as the replacement of the fibrous structure of deformed tungsten by equiaxed grains. The objective of this study was to explore the nickel-induced recrystallization reaction in tungsten and attempt to elucidate its mechanism. As well, an effort to define which other elements give rise to low-temperature-induced recrystallization was carried out. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The procedure adopted for these experiments was essentially to bring nickel and other elements into diffusive contact with cold-worked tungsten wires. The process of recrystallization was followed as a function of time and temperature by light and electron microscopic observations. First the influence of nickel on the recrystallization temperature of arc-melted, zone-refined, and variously doped tungsten wire was determined by electroplating a deposit of nickel on the surface of the wire and annealing at a variety of temperatures for 3 hr. The chemical analyses of the tungsten wires used in this investigation are given in Table I. The surface of the tungsten wire was etched with Murakami's slution' and approximately 0.005 in, of Ni was deposited from a Watts-type low pH bath14 for the conditions of these experiments. Variations in plating thickness from about 0.001 to 0.005 in. had no discernible influence on the resulting structures. The wires were then annealed in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen to establish the recrystallization temperature. Concurrently, un-plated specimens were annealed to establish the recrystallization characteristics of nickel-free wire. The criterion of recrystallization was that the fibrous structure be completely replaced by equiaxed grains after a 3-hr treatment of temperature. This provided more reproducible results than use of the first recrystallized grain or a fixed proportion of re-crystallized structure as the critical observation. The structures encountered in longitudinal and transverse sections were examined by both light and electron microscopy at magnifications up to X32,000 using parlo-dion-carbon replicas shadowed with platinum for the latter method. Second, the influence of a variety of metals on the recrystallization temperature of 0.010 in. D alumina-silica doped tungsten wire, AW136-64, was determined. The elements were applied by electroplating whenever possible. Alternatively, they were vapor-plated on the tungsten wire and a greater thickness built up by coating with a dispersion of metal powder in nitrocellulose lacquer. Elements not amenable to either of these procedures were merely slurry coated on the tungsten. The recrystallization temperature was determined as above. Third, the nickel-induced recrystallization process in doped wire was studied more closely by electroplating 8 mils of Ni on 65-mil alumina-silica doped tungsten wire, AW153-NS10, and exposing the wire to temperatures of llOO°, 1200°, or 1300°C for various times in a hydrogen atmosphere. A circular recrystallization front, 'Onsisting of equiaxed grains, developed at the periphery Of the coated tungsten wire, and the advance of this front into the fibrous interior was studied. PeRhaps of all the scientific economic questions which have been claiming the attention of capitalists, metallurgists, manufacturers, directors of public utilities, and the general public of America, during the last few years, none have been of more importance than the one relating to the wear and safety of steel rails. The discovery of the Bessemer process made possible modern railway development. In that growth, as has generally happened in all progressive movemeuts, all its departments have not remained equally balanced. Iron rails permitted the construction of roadways for the passage of power-driven vehicles. In time the speed and weight of such carriages proved too much for the wearing-qualities of the rails, and the limit of railway capacity seemed to have been reached. Bessemer made his invention, which was soon perfected and developed, especially as related to steel rails, and thereby increased the limit of capacity, and vastly greater railway progress was made pgssible. The Siemens-Martin open-hearth process followed, and was later supplemented by the Thomas-Q-ilchrist basic improvement. For a time the Bessemer steel rails of commerce were more than equal to all that was asked of them, but this did not long continue, as evidenced by the records in our Tansactions. Revolutionary changes occurred in the industrial world, and in no part of it more than in steel-rail manufacture. Great and powerful commercial combinations were made, whose financial resources made possible the supplanting of the then most efficient blast-furnaces, steel-works, and mills, by others of theretofore unimagined capacity. Old traditions and practices of steel-making were wiped away, and, in too many cases, output was apparently the chief aim, with the result that much dissatisfaction with the wear and safety of rails was felt by railway officials, and the general public was concerned as to its safety when traveling.
