A simple on-stream particle-size analysis method is presented that leads to a bulk-property single-channel device; although the concept can be extended to multi-channel sizing information. The method is based on continuously measuring and comparing the percent solids in the sample stream and in an internal-reference stream containing only undersize particles. A semipermeable hydraulic system is used such that the particle mass concentration in the internal stream can vary, and is always proportional to the undersize particle mass concentration in the sample stream.

The dynamic nucleation of supercooled bismuth and Bi-Sn alloys has been studied over a frequency range of 15 to 20,000 cps. For low-frequency vibration, a minimum vibrational energy was required for enhancement of nucleation. Above this critical energy, the dynamic supercooling was less than static supercooling showing that vibration promoted nucleation. The amount of dynamic supercooling continued to decrease with increasing vibrational energy until a minimum or threshold value was reached. This minimum value of supercooling for nucleation remained constant joy all further increases in vibrational energy. For higher frequencies, similar results were observed. This behavior has been related to the necessity of cavitation for dynamic nucleation. When a liquid is cooled to a temperature below its equilibrium melting point, the solid phase is more thermodynamically stable. However, for solidification to occur, a two-step process, nucleation and subsequent growth of the solid phase, must occur. When a liquid is supercooled, that is cooled below the equilibrium melting point, the controlling process for solidification to begin is the rate of nucleation. Once nucleation has occurred, the solidification process is controlled by the rate of growth. Nucleation can be induced by two factors: either by a catalyst or by the use of mechanical shock. Numerous investigators1-4 have studied the effect of nucleation catalysis but much less systematic study has been made of nucleation by mechanical shock waves. The influence of vibrations on grain size in castings and ingots has been studied by many authors but no clear understanding of the mechanism or accurate prediction of the effect has been presented.5 It would be intuitively expected that the further the departure from equilibrium (i.e., the greater the supercooling), the easier it would be to induce nucleation. This has been quantitatively demonstrated both by walker6 and later by Stuhr,7 that the greater the degree of supercooling the easier it is to nucleate by a shock wave. Stuhr also attempted to obtain the mechanical energy required for nucleation of bismuth as a function of supercooling. He vibrated a crucible containing supercooled metal at low frequencies and various amplitudes and noted the corresponding dynamic supercooling obtained. The amount of supercooling was inversely proportional to the mechanical energy applied. Limitation of his experiment was the problem of the confinement of the liquid in the crucible without splashing and minimizing other unwanted modes of vibration. Tiller et al.8,9 did similar work on tin and Sn-Pb alloys using an electromagnetic stirring device. Their conclusions were that the magnitude of the magnetic field strength did not affect the amount of undercooling at which nucleation was initiated. While conclusive experimental results have been lacking to explain this effect of mechanical vibration on inducing nucleation, a number of theories have been proposed. Two of these theories are discussed below. 1) The Change in Melting:- Point Locally Due to the Change in Pressure (Clapeyron Equation). According to Vonnegut10 the most plausible explanation for the nucleation of a supercooled melt by cavitation is the effect of changing the melting point by a change in pressure. For materials where the volume decreases on solidification, an increase in pressure raises the melting point; for materials which expand on solidification, the melting point is raised for a decrease in pressure, i.e., rarefaction. Using the Clapeyron equation, the melting point of a metal can be calculated as a function of pressure. If it is assumed that the equation can also be used to calculate the temperature of nucleation of a supercooled melt as a function of pressure (i.e., the temperature of heterogeneous nucleation will increase with pressure at the same rate as the melting point), the amount of supercooling required for nucleation will be constant at all pressures as shown in Fig. 1. It is obvious that an isothermal change which results in an increase in melting point results in an equal increase in supercooling. This increase in supercooling may now be sufficient for nucleation. A pressure of 80,000 atm was calculated, using the Clapeyron equation, as the pressure required to increase the temperature of nucleation of nickel by 200°C. According to Lord Rayleigh,11 this very large pressure could be generated for a very brief period of time by the collapse of a cavity. This pressure wave is radiated in all directions from the collapsed cavity. If the temperature of the melt is slightly below its equilibrium melting temperature at atmospheric pressure, stable growth can follow; that is, once nucleation occurs, growth becomes the main driving force of the solidification process. This proposal has been extended to water which expands on freezing by assuming that nucleation occurs during rarefaction following the pressure pulse. This negative pressure pulse should follow immediately after the positive pressure pulse with its magnitude approaching the critical tensile strength of the liquid. The negative pressure developed during this period would raise the melting point of water and thus promote nucleation. Hunt and jackson12 have suggested this for water. Similarly, it could be postulated that bismuth which also expands on freezing could be nucleated during the negative pressure pulse. 2) Nucleation by a High-pressure Phase. An extension of the Clapeyron equation to systems where density decreased on freezing at atmosphere pressure has been proposed by Hickling.13 The phase diagram for water initially shows the well-known decrease in

IN 1925 a criterion for localized deformation in a single crystal was derived by Taylor and Elam.' They noted that for a single active slip plane the slip plane area is constant, but the direction of the stress with respect to the slip direction changes during deformation so that, when the increase in stress due to this rotation is large enough relative to the work hardening, instability occurs. (By instability is meant continued slip on the active slip plane.) The instability criterion may be written t>dt/d?/m tan2? [1] where t and ? are resolved shear stress and strain, m the Schmid factor for resolving shear stress, and ? is the angle between the slip direction and the axis of tension. The formula points out that regardless of the atomic mechanism involved, for large flow stresses and low work hardening rates, slip on a single plane—once started—should continue. The case of alloying provides a direct possibility of adjusting the parameters in Eq. [I]: As an alloying element is added to a pure metal, the flow stress is raised and the work hardening in easy glide may be either decreased2 or unaltered.3 Since flow stresses in easy glide may rise to the kg/mm2 range for alloy crystals while easy glide slopes may be less than % kg/mm2, 2 it is possible for the inequality to be satisfied. Indeed Garstone and Honeycombe3 report that slip becomes coarser with increasing stress in the easy glide range, where the flow stress would be increasing and the slope would be essentially constant. Another case where high flow stresses and low hardening rates accompany coarse slip is that of quench hardening.4 Maddin and Cottrell report that quenched aluminum crystals display slip markings resembling those of a brass. A similar effect has been observed after irradiation.'

A novel technique for determining the surface energy (?) and its derivative with respect to orientation, (?') is described. Essentially it involves the 'floating" of a wedge on the substrate, said wedge being made of a material which is not wet or only slightly wet by the substrate, i. e., as a greased needle "floats" on water. A thermodynamic analysis of a system in which the wedge is supported entirely by surface energy is given. If the original suyface is not at a cusp orientation, the surface tension is directly measurable from the groove angle formed. If the original surface is at a cusp orientation, there may or may not be a groove depending on the relative value of ?' and the weight of the wedge. Experiments primarily on copper and silver showed that sapphire, quartz and refractory metal wedges were wet while graphite wedges were not. The technique was demonstrated to work using graphite wedges, but the results obtained were not as eccurate as those obtained by other workers using the wire-creep experiments. It is concluded that the technique might prove most useful with non-metals where ?' is large and filament creep experiments would be quite difficult. If an absolute value of the surface free energy (?) of a metal is to be determined, the most reliable methods used to date measure an average over the various orientations exposed on a polycrystalline sample. For example, ? for silver, gold, and copper have been measured by determining the force required to just keep a thin wire,' or foil,' specimen from contracting under the influence of ?. Herring 3 has predicted and experiment confirms, that the sensitivity of this method is inversely proportional to the grain size.' Thus it cannot be used to measure ? for a particular orientation by using a foil single crystal or a very coarse-grained specimen. An accurate value if ? for tungsten averaged over a range of orientations has been determined using a field emission technique. The same techniques cannot or have not been used to measure ? for non-metallic solids, and as a result the values available are much less accurate.4 This Paper resents a means of making an absolute determination of ? for a particular surface orientation on any solid, as long as the given surface orientation does not break up into other orientations during an anneal. Experimentally ? is found to vary with orientation and at a few low index orientations it is found to have a cusped minimum, i.e., the derivative of ? with respect to the orientation of the surface changes discontinuously at the low index orientation, see Fig. 1. The slope of a plot of ? vs orientation (herein designated ?') is called the torque on the surface, since it tends to rotate the exposed surface toward the low index orientation, or if the surface is at the cusp orientation it opposes any force tending to rotate the surface out of the low index orientation. The ratio ?'/? has been determined for a few metals, but in cases where this ratio is high there is presently no means of determining either ?'/? or the absolute value of ?' for the orientations present on an annealed surface. The technique discussed herein also provides a means of determining an absolute value of ?' for those orientations which deviate only infinitesimally from a cusp orientation. It should work best on surfaces where ?'/? is large; that is, for cases where no other technique is available for measuring ?'. Aside from trying to learn more about surfaces through measuring ? and ?', the primary reason for wanting values of ? or ?' is to study adsorption. From measurements of the variation of ? for a particular orientation with the concentration of an impurity, one can obtain the number of impurity atoms adsorbed per unit area (Ti) on that orientation using the Gibbs adsorption equation.' where µi is the chemical potential of the adsorbed impurity. Thus, if absolute values of ? could be obtained for the free surface of a given surface orientation as a function of µi, ri could be determined for the given orientation. Furthermore, by equilibrating a grain boundary with the given surface at various values of ki, one could also determine ri for the grain boundary. Similarly Robertson 6 has pointed out that if y is taken to be a continuous function of and µi, then a2 ?/a @a µ2 = a2 ?/a pi a +. Because of the war, oil conversions in industrial, commercial, and domestic installations have been made to the equivalent of 20,000,000 tons of coal. The war emergency has resulted in a great shifting of various types of coals to various markets. Huge tonnages of metallurgical-quality coals have been withdrawn from steam and domestic business and sent into the iron and steel industries. Marginal coals have replaced these coals in the steam and domestic field.

A survey of the resources of mineral fuels, coal, petroleum and natural gas presupposes a clear distinction between the known amount underground and the "proven reserves"; the'portion that can be economically brought to the surface and made available for utilization. Only a fraction of the coal and petroleum in producing fields is or can be economically brought to the surface and not all of this is economically utilized; also, although practically all the natural gas can be economically recovered and utilized, in actual practice a large part of the total volume that reaches the mouth of the wells is wantonly blown into the air and wasted. It is thus estimated that of the total amount of coal underground about 40 per cent remains unrecovered, or is otherwise wasted, before it reaches the consumer; that only some 25 per cent of the petroleum in proven fields is actually brought to the surface; and that even if practically the entire volume of natural gas can be economically utilized, in actual practice close to 25 per cent of the total produced is now absolutely wasted. And the dissipation of this gas, unwarranted as it is, not only diminishes the gas supply but diminishes also the proven reserves of petroleum from such fields as the Panhandle of Texas, where petroleum and natural gas are produced simultaneously. Many factors affect the estimates of the proven reserves of mineral fuels, such as the capacity and nature of the reservoir, its depth, the quality of the product, the efficiency of recovery, the price of the fuel and its byproducts, etc., etc., but superseding at times all of these in connection with petroleum and natural gas deposits is the effect of "subsoil ownership" on the rate and methods of exploitation of the deposits. As a result it should be a comparatively simple matter to eliminate waste and overproduction, and thereby increase the proven reserves of petroleum and natural gas, in Russia, Iran and Iraq, where the subsoil rights are nationalized, or in any country in which there is or can be quickly established an effective legal control of the underground deposits and the manner of their exploitation. NORTH -CENTRAL Texas has recently become a center of interest for the oil men of America. The bringing in of the McClosky well at Ranger, Eastland County, and the shallow pool at Brownwood, Brown County, in 1917, has stimulated interest in this area to fever pitch. Oil men from all over the United States are now investing there. The area of present interest is shown by the accompanying map (Fig. 1). The money spent in leases runs into millions of dollars. It is no exaggeration to say that a strip of country 200 miles (321 km.) long and 125 miles (201 km.) wide, comprising some 15,000,000 acres (6,070,310 ha.)., has been leased practically solid at a cost for rentals and bonuses of at least $1 per acre. The test holes contracted for will certainly number 400, at a cost of at, east $5,000,000. From what has been done in the past six months, $20,000,000 at least will be spent. To pay, returns on this amount of money, new production to the extent of at least 12,000,000 bbl. must be obtained. At present, the production from new fields will not average over 5000 bbl. per (lay; three wells at Ranger are producing 3000 bbl.; 250 wells at Brownwood produce 1000 bbl.; and the Gray well, Coleman County, is as yet an unknown factor. However, at Ranger there is every indication of developing a good pool covering from 1500 to 2000 acres (607 to 809 ha;), more or less, but the wells are deep, 3400 to 3800 ft. (1036 to 1158 m.), and cost $35,000 to $40,000 to drill. Large wells are necessary to pay for such expensive holes. As new wells are drilled, the gas pressure will be lowered rapidly, and large production need not be expected. For those oil men who expect a second Cushing or an Eldorado, Ranger holds little of promise. At Brownwood, Brown County, there are some 250 shallow wells (depths from. 200 to 350 ft.) averaging 4 to 7 bbl. per day. There is a chance of an extensive producing area, for these shallow sands to the southwest, and the opening of several thousand acres of shallow oil territory, and also some promise of deeper oil horizons in the Ranger horizon, but probably all under 2500 ft.

QUITE generally an increase in the temperature tends to bring a system closer to ideality. It is reasonable as a first approximation to consider that the excess free energy will vary linearly with the temperature, or: where t may be defined as the "characteristic temperature" of the solution, or the temperature at which the system would become ideal if the results at T were linearly extrapolated. It must be emphasized that consideration of this hypothetical property is an appeal to intuition rather than an established physical concept. The order of magnitude of 7 for dilute solutions will depend on the nature of the solvent; a value of 3000° + 1000°K may be suggested for ordinary metallic solutions. In terms of free energy, entropy, and enthalpy first-order interaction coefficients, differentiation of the above equations with respect to composition leads to The concept of t offers a simple and plausible interpretation of Chipman and corrigan's3 recent empirical correlation between and a for a number of groups of ternary systems 1-24. The authors found that in each group the ratio was approximately constant. The corresponding calculated from their data by Eq. [4] are listed in Table I. The expected order of magnitude is obtained for 7. Many present direct reduction processes utilize iron ore concentrates for the production of sponge iron and the sponge iron is usually preferred as an agglomerate. Pelletizing a high grade iron oxide concentrate prior to reduction is a simple approach to the high capacity production of a uniform and agglomerated sponge iron product. The present paper describes the effect of different atmospheres and physical characteristics on the reduction of pelletized iron oxide concentrates. The kinetics of iron oxide reduction have been I studied by numerous investigators1-4 and a rate equation for the hydrogen reduction of hematite and magnetite has been proposed. Mc Kewan' obtained kinetic data for the reduction of hematite spheres sintered at 13'70°C (2498'F'). The kinetics of magnetite reduction was studied by Quets. He compacted the oxide at a pressure of 1 ton per sq cm and sintered the specimens to densities of 95 to 96 pct of theoretical. These studies demonstrated that the reduction of iron oxide is a topochemical process and that the rate of reduction is proportional to the receding surface area of remaining iron oxide. Thus, the measurement of the kinetics of iron oxide reduction depends upon the development of a measurable and well defined interface between metal and reacting oxide. It is evident that the reduction rate will be constant only when the rate of formation of the reaction product layer is constant. It was recognized by Joseph' and Edstrom' that the physical character of the oxide will determine the configuration of the interface between oxide and metal. The reduction of oxides which exhibit few pores or no interconnected pores should proceed by topochemical processes. However, if a massive or dense crystalline ore cracks during the reduction of the oxide, thus allowing the reduction to Proceed away from a well defined oxide/metal interface, then the observed reduction rate will vary or change during reduction. From a process standpoint, it would be difficult to apply absolute reduction rates determined for crystalline or nonporous iron oxide to the direct reduction of a porous pellet of iron ore concentrate. Most present direct reduction processes are attempts to utilize iron ore concentraates in the production of sponge iron. The sponge iron is usually preferred in an agglomerated form for subsequent melting practices. Pelletizing a high grade iron oxide concentrate prior to reduction is a simple approach to the high capacity production of a uniform and agglomerated sponge iron product. One process for preparing such a product has already been de-scribed. This paper describes the effect of different atmospheres and physical characteristics on the reduction of pelletized iron oxide concentrates. ORE CONCENTRATES STUDIED A magnetite concentrate from Reserve Mining Co. and a hematite concentrate from U.S. Steel Corp. were used in preparing pellets for these experiments. A head analysis of these concentrates is given in Table I. To compare the reduction rates of pelletized concentrates, it was necessary that each pellet contain equal amounts of oxygen which could be removed by reduction, regardless of the oxidation state, i.e., Fez% or Fe304. Also, because of the difficulty in preparing spherical pellets of uniform size, weight, density, and porosity for experimental purposes, pellets of a cylindrical shape were formed in a press.

A recent paper by Thomas1 has presented new data on the solubility of hydrogen in solid silver at 1 atm pressure in the temperature range 600° to 963°C. However, no data is reported in the literature on hydrogen solubility in liquid silver. The Sieverts technique which has been described previously2,3 was used in the present work. Charges of approximately 160 g were melted in Morgan "purox" recrystallized alumina crucibles and purified helium was used for the determination of the "hot volume" during each experiment. A chemical analysis of the silver indicates that the impurity content (Cu + Al) is less than 0.02 wt pct. Hydrogen solubility in the temperature range 963° to 1200°C was investigated. The results of three experiments are shown in Table I. Fig. 1 shows an Arrhenius plot of the present work together with the solid-state data of Thomas, Steacie, and johnson,4 Eichenauer et al.,5 and Siegelin et al.6 The following expression has been derived from the Arrhenius plot of the present data: log (solubility of hydrogen, cm3 per 100 g) = 2.154-3512.0/ToK The heat of solution derived from Fig. 1 is 31,150 cal per g mole H2 compared with the value of 33,020 cal per g mole H2 obtained by Thomas and 12,000 cal per g mole H2 obtained from the data of Steacie. It was observed that hydrogen evolution took place when the silver melts were solidified under 1 atm of hydrogen, which would not be expected from an extrapolation of the results of Steacie. Schenck and Lange7 have observed that, for several transition metals at their melting points, the ratio of the hydrogen solubility in the liquid to that in the solid lies in the range 2.1 to 3.1. The combustion performance of sub-bituminous slack coal is greatly improved by the removal of the smaller size fractions. Screening processes are not well suited to the size separation, at 1/8 in. or 1/16 in., with coals which are normally wet, and the use of an alternative size-separation device has been investigated. It is felt that this classifier might be applied equally well to other minerals in cases such as this, where precise size limits are not essential. Coal is dropped as a curtain onto a curved metal plate, shaped rather like a ski-jump. The smaller particles, slowed up in their free fall to the plate and also by contact with the metal, leave the plate with a lower horizontal velocity; they can be separated from the larger particles by virtue of their shorter trajectory. The principle of the classifier is obvious from the diagram (see Fig. 1) which shows also the positions, relative to the curved plate, of the point of coal feed and of the dividing plate which separates the streams of coal particles. The horizontal distance between the curved plate and the dividing plate is varied in the tests. It is designated in the general case, by X. Tests were carried out using slack coal with a free moisture content higher than that expected in any commercial operation. The results given in Table I. show the percentage recovery of upgraded product, and the cumulative screen analysis of both the upgraded and reject material, for three different positions of the dividing plate. The results show, for example, that the original coal can be upgraded, with a recovery of 80%, to reduce the minus 1/8 in. frac-

DISCUSSION Fred C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—This is a very complete description of the screened ore fine grinding installation at Lake Shore. The only important data which might be desired are the operating screen analyses and power consumption in each stage. The statement that the energy consumption, or kw-hr per ton, remains constant for all mill diameters is of great interest, but the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases. More definite test work is needed to establish this point. Screened ore fine minding has been successful on hard Lake Shore ore &d on about equally hard South African Rand ore. However, it is still not determined whether it would be successful on ores of average or less than average hardness. It is possible that with softer ores the consumption of ore pebbles might be exceedingly high, or might even exceed the available supply. Also, the softer feed might result in a rapid buildup of harmful intermediate sizes in the mill circuit. These factors can be determined only by a full scale or long pilot mill test. In any case the Lake Shore staff is to be congratulated for this pioneering work. Bunting. S. Crocker (author's reply)—As requested, the operating screen analyses and Bower consumption for each of the four stages of pebble milling are given, see Table XII. The fist three stages are in series circuit; the last stage is in closed circuit. The primary circuit had rock feed averaging 124 g per piece and the final stages rock feed weighing 63 g. The intermediate stages had mixtures of the two. Regarding Mr. Bond's statement that "the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases," I would say that I have frequently been told this but have never yet been shown any evidence or seen any evidence published that would prove this statement. It may be true that some of the big mills recently installed have mechanical power savers such as micarta bearings and better lubrication, but as far as the power consumed inside the mill is concerned, we at Lake Shore think that it varies as D2 .", and that is all. DISCUSSION Fred C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—This is a very complete description of the screened ore fine grinding installation at Lake Shore. The only important data which might be desired are the operating screen analyses and power consumption in each stage. The statement that the energy consumption, or kw-hr per ton, remains constant for all mill diameters is of great interest, but the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases. More definite test work is needed to establish this point. Screened ore fine minding has been successful on hard Lake Shore ore &d on about equally hard South African Rand ore. However, it is still not determined whether it would be successful on ores of average or less than average hardness. It is possible that with softer ores the consumption of ore pebbles might be exceedingly high, or might even exceed the available supply. Also, the softer feed might result in a rapid buildup of harmful intermediate sizes in the mill circuit. These factors can be determined only by a full scale or long pilot mill test. In any case the Lake Shore staff is to be congratulated for this pioneering work. Bunting. S. Crocker (author's reply)—As requested, the operating screen analyses and Bower consumption for each of the four stages of pebble milling are given, see Table XII. The fist three stages are in series circuit; the last stage is in closed circuit. The primary circuit had rock feed averaging 124 g per piece and the final stages rock feed weighing 63 g. The intermediate stages had mixtures of the two. Regarding Mr. Bond's statement that "the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases," I would say that I have frequently been told this but have never yet been shown any evidence or seen any evidence published that would prove this statement. It may be true that some of the big mills recently installed have mechanical power savers such as micarta bearings and better lubrication, but as far as the power consumed inside the mill is concerned, we at Lake Shore think that it varies as D2 .", and that is all. In order to study the role of work hardening in the fatigue process, use was made of the great sensitivty of the resistivity of AuCu to cold work. A change of the resistivity of AuCu of the order of 1 to 2 pct at the temperature of liquid nitrogen was found to occur as a consequence of severe fatigue. ACCORDING to Orowan's theory,' the process of fatigue In metals 1s associated with the production of a number of small regions which have undergone strain hardening. This phenomenon is supposed to occilr even if the stress applied during fatiguing is always smaller than the yield stress. In an attempt to verity the existence of such regions, Welber and Webeler' undertook to detect the stored energy associated with severe fatigue in copper. Previous experiments" had shown that the energy stored in a sample of copper which has been cold worked by torsion is released in the temperature range between 150" and 250°C when the sample is heated from room temperature and that no more energy is released (or absorbed) between 250" and 450°C. In particular the stored energy amounted to 0.41 cal per g for a case in which the mechanical energy expended in twisting the sample was 11.9 cal per g. In the case of fatigued copper, however, no release of stored energy could be detected between 150" and 250°C, so that the experimental error of &0.02 cal per g represents an upper limit for the amount of energy stored in strain hardening., It seemed desirable to attack the problem in a new fashion. For this purpose, it was decided to make use of the fact that, if an alloy capable of undergoing the order-disorder transition is ordered and then cold worked, the resistivity, p, increases very greatly above the value for the ordered state even if the deformation is very small. Some insight into the nature of the fatigue process may be obtained then by measuring the resistivity of an ordered sample before and after subjecting it to fatigue. For reasons which will become apparent from the following remarks, considerably more can be learned by carrying out the resistivity measurements at two different temperatures. In the case of a material containing impurities, vacancies, dislocations, or other imperfections of essentially atomic dimensions, the resistivity, p, according to Matthiessen's rule, can be represented as a sum of two terms p = p, + p, where p, is the (temperature dependent) resistivity of the pure metal, and p, is the temperature independent contribution of the imperfections. Briefly, the physical basis for this rule is the following: The main contribution of the impurities in question to the resistivity results from the fact that they interrupt the periodicity of the lattice and thus scatter the conduction electrons with a probability which is almost independent of temperature. In order that this be the case, it is necessary that the' extension of the impurities be small enough—roughly less than one electron mean free path—so that their main effect on the resistivity occurs for the foregoing reason. If an alloy like AuCu is partly or completely disordered by quenching from an appropriate temperature, Matthiessen's rule also applies to a very good approximation* with p, representing in this case the resistivity po of the ordered sample and p, the additional (temperature independent) resistivity due to the disorder. In general, the disorder can be represented in terms of atoms which are displaced from their "proper" positions in the superlattice and which thus qualitatively represent the imperfections in the superlattice responsible for the term p,. Since the misplaced atoms are distributed at random throughout the super-lattice, their contribution to the resistivity still can be considered in terms of the scattering of conduction electrons by lattice defects. The situation is somewhat more complex in the case of an alloy disordered by cold work because the process of disordering here does not involve a random redistribution of the atoms; however, Matthiessen's rule also holds in this case. Whenever Matthiessen's rule does apply, the values of the quantity /3 = (p? — /(T, — T,), where p, and p, are the values of the resistivity at two fixed temperatures, T, and T,, respectively, is constant (independent of p,) for a given alloy or metal. In particular, if a sample of AuCu is subjected to ordinary cold work, the value of /3 remains equal to Po, the value for the ordered material. According to Orowan's theory,' as remarked before, a fatigued sample contains a large number of isolated severely cold-worked regions, which make up only a small proportion of the metal. Thus, if a sample of AuCu initially in the ordered state is fatigued, more or less disordered regions will be produced within the ordered material. If these regions are small enough so that Matthiessen's rule applies, then it follows from the previous discussion that /3 again will remain equal to Po. If the effect of fatigue is to produce cold-worked regions which are macroscopic—of the order of at least several electron mean free paths—the effective resistivity, p, has to be computed by use of the ordinary laws of large-scale electrodynamics. For the sake of simplicity, it will be assumed here that the cold-worked regions are completely disordered and have a resistivity, p,. For a given proportion A of disordered regions the effective resistivity, p, for the current in a given direction depends on the geometrical configuration of these regions. INTRODUCTION CLEAR recognition by Lindgren1 of the important control exerted by physical conditions on the formation of ores laid the foundation for that long-sought attainment, a classification? of mineral deposits based consistently on origin. In probably no other portion of the realm of mineral deposition has the importance of physical influences been so manifest or the validity of Lindgren's genetic classification been so well proved as in that extremely important family of ore deposits which are now universally classed as hydrothermal and generally regarded as of magmatic derivation. While many varieties of deposits, some of them possessing great scientific interest and economic importance, fall outside the limits of this hydrothermal group, inclusion within it of most of the veins and a vast number of the replacement deposits of the world gives to this grand genetic class at once a dominating importance and a powerful scientific appeal. Nowhere are these vein and replacement deposits of hydro- thermal lineage more generously distributed, more extensively exploited or more thoroughly known than in the Cordilleran province of the United States. One of the respects in which these hydrothermal deposits command the interest of both geologists and mine operators is in their relation to depth: the great vertical range through which many of them have already been developed, the disappointing failure of others at relatively shallow levels, and the noteworthy downward changes in character and tenor exhibited by still others. In this hydrothermal category (if the Rand be granted place here) are included the ores of all the very deep mines of the world, ranging from 5,000 to nearly 8,000 ft., as well as of many other mines undoubtedly destined in time to attain corresponding depths.
