The trend toward utilization of low grade iron ores means that more efficient methods must be developed for their concentration. The collecting ability of fatty acids derived from fish oils has been extensively investigated by Cooke.' Tuna oil, a byproduct of the tuna canning industry, is one of the lower priced fish oils. Utilization of tuna oil fatty acids as collectors in the flotation of iron ore might be economically feasible under certain market conditions, especially if their efficiency were high. Crude or unfractionated tuna oil fatty acids, and five fractions derived therefrom, were tested for their ability to concentrate a commercial specularite ore from northern Michigan. A commercial fatty acid derived from tall oil, and commonly used in nonsulfide flotation, was used as a reference. The crude fatty acids were obtained by simple saponification of tuna oil. Fractions A and B were obtained by acetone precipitation of the crude acids at -5O and -2S°C, respectively. Fraction C was obtained by a partial fractional distillation at 12S°C and at a pressure of 3y in a centrifugal molecular still in order to remove the shortest and longest chain fatty acids of tuna oil as well as oxidation products present in the original mixture. Fractions D and E were prepared by a chilling process in order to precipitate the unwanted saturated fatty acids. Yields and iodine values of the materials used are listed below: The seven samples were used as collectors in a laboratory procedure patterned after the commercial process for flotation of Michigan specularite ore. THE present study is intended as a preliminary statistical survey of the world's production of petroleum substitutes. The information presented is admittedly deficient. It is believed, however, that the increasing importance of these substitutes, particularly with Europe at war, justifies its presentation at this time, if for no other [ ] reason than to encourage enlightened pertinent discussion. The world's production in 1939 of petroleum substitutes-of which approximately 97 per cent are direct substitutes for motor fuels-is tentatively estimated at 108,000,000 bbl., or equivalent to the combined output of crude oil in 1939 of Rumania, Mexico and Colombia. With few exceptions, these figures of production represent also actual figures of consumption. The United States, owing mainly to its output of natural gasoline, leads all countries in the production of these products, with about 53 per cent of the total. In European countries, particularly Germany, the imminence of war in 1939 forced an increase in production and improvement of methods of manufacturing motor fuels, largely from coal, with the result that this country produced in that year over 20,000,000 bbl. of substitutes. Since the beginning of hostilities, substitutes have offered more and more the means of meeting the unfavorable balance between supply and demand in European [ ] countries; the increase in production of these products being at least in part offset by the systematic bombing of synthetic plants and oil storage. The source materials and the resulting substitutes are listed in Table I. The following are the approximate gross heat equivalents of some substitutes to barrels of gasoline:

HIWASSEE Dam, now under construction by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Hiwassee River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, will require aggregate for approximately 800,000 cu. yd. of concrete. Near the damsite deposits of natural sand or gravel are not available and graywacke, a rock that is found in abundance, suggested itself as a likely source of manufactured aggregate. Graywacke is a metamorphosed sandstone composed principally of a mixture of quartz (65 per cent), mica (25 per cent), and feldspar (10 per cent). Other minerals are pres-ent in negligible amounts. The rock varies in different parts of the quarry from very fine to a coarse grain containing particles of about 1/4 in. maximum size, although the bulk of the deposit is medium grain. Exten-sive tests showed that graywacke would be suitable as a source of both coarse and fine aggregates. The aggregate plant available for use at Hiwassee Dam consisted of the coarse-aggregate and sand plant used on the Norris project. The coarse-aggregate plant had also been used at Chickamauga Dam. Although most of this plant equipment is now in use at Hiwassee, the present flowsheet is not only different from that at Norris and Chicka-mauga but is also unique as compared to the flowsheet of the average crushed-stone aggregate plant. It is hoped that this paper will show the importance of proper arrange-ment of equipment if the optimum in flexibility and capacity is to be attained.

The authors present a general outline of the theory and development of heavy-liquid application to mineral processing. Patent literature and processes are reviewed with special emphasis on liquid recovery systems which have been employed or proposed. Advantages and disadvantages of the process are discussed together with the recent developments which have revived interest in this old concentration method. The most important single factor in this resurgence of interest is concluded to be the narrowing gulf between chemical engineering and mineral dressing which has opened the field for new concepts of mineral plant design. A partial summary of patents on heavy liquid separations is included. In spite of the fact that heavy-liquid separation with organic liquids has been used in the laboratory for over 50 years, this process has never graduated to large scale commercial use for any extended period. However, a variation of this process, the sink-float or heavy-media separation process has found wide acceptance and is used to separate minerals from diamonds to gravel. Materials used to increase the specific gravity of the pulps used as heavy media include sand, clay, barite, magnetite, galena, hematite, atomized lead and ferrosilicon. Because of the greater ease of recovery, the magnetic materials, magnetite and ferrosilicon, are the preferred media today. In the U. S. alone, heavy-media iron ore plants with a capacity of over 10 million tons of concentrate per year are in existence. Heavy-media separation involving use of solid, inorganic particles suspended in water rapidly found a wide range of commercial use with the introduction of magnetic media. The minerals engineer is experienced in working with suspensions and quickly learned to develop and control such media at a cost compatible to the type of separation desired. The natural superiority of a heavy liquid with uniform chemical and physical properties has never been questioned since its first use in laboratory mineral separatory procedures. It offers the only method for gravity separation of fine particles of relatively close specific gravity. The most important early attempt to make heavy liquid separations commercial were made by the DuPont Co. which began experimental work on Virginia limonite in 1904. The appended "Partial Summary of Patents" compiled by W.L. O'Connell of The Dow Chemical Co. demonstrates the quantity and sequence of this work. Both inorganic and organic parting liquids were investigated and numerous patents were issued on the use and recovery of these liquids. The work culminated in the heavy liquid plant of the Weston Coal Co. at Shenandoah, Pa. Chemical engineering design of this plant was the responsibility of Francis I. and Hubert I. DuPont. Heavy-liquid separation of coal almost achieved commercial status at this plant which actually processed over 20,000 tons of coal. The liquids used were tetrabromethane, pentachloroethane and trichlo-roethylene, with liquid losses ranging from 8.9 to 12.4 oz per ton of cleaned coal. The reasons for failure of this plant are not clear but probably involved toxicity problems as well as other problems in chemical engineering. Excellent economics were reported. A more recent pilot plant was built in 1954-55 by Norris Goodwin for the Inerto Co. to treat hectorite clay. This plant employed carbon tetrachloride in jigs with liquid recovery by evaporation. Although good separation was achieved, incomplete removal of the CCl, from the clay prevented commercial operation. The only present operations known to the authors employing heavy liquids for gravity separations are limited to the use of calcium chloride in certain coal washers and bromochloromethane in a small batch operation (one ton solids per day) for the separation of beryllium metal particles from slag materials. This is not strictly a minerals beneficiation problem but it has demonstrated the feasibility of such separations. Quite early in the beginning of the present century, hoisting equipment underwent a radical change, when electric motors were applied to furnish the power in place of steam engines. Naturally, in the beginning, motors were not employed for large hoists: most of them were small single-drum hoists for which the motor ran continuously and the drum was clutched in for hoisting by various methods, and the down-going trips were made on the brake. In 1911 the Nordberg Manufacturing Co. of Milwaukee built for the first time a double-drum hoist powered with a first-motion direct-current motor (Fig. I). This hoist embodied many of the features that are used on larger hoists today. In the early development of motor-driven hoists a more or less natural mis- take was generally made, which only recently is being corrected. Because the electric motor has a higher speed than the steam engine, mining people in general accepted, without question, the use of small-diameter drums and the resultant finding of the rope in multiple layers, which was not at that time, the general practice on first-motion steam hoists. Small-diameter drums can usually be driven by a motor through a single reduction of gears even with relatively high motor speed, therefore the complete equipment could be obtained with a lower first cost.

IN the past, steam engines were used in practically all cases for driving the machinery, in and about an anthracite breaker, and hence little or no accurate data were available as to the power requirements for starting and operating the individual machines, which make up the complete equipment. It was impossible to segregate the power necessary to drive each individual machine, first, because the equipment was driven in groups, and second, because it was impracticable to obtain graphic, integrated, or instantaneous records of the horsepower used. As a result of these conditions, it was found, when individual electric motors were applied to the various machines, that more accurate and complete data were needed in order to provide motors of the proper power and design for the particular services to be rendered. In order to obtain the desired information, the writers made and collected a number of tests, from time to time, on the individual motor drives in- electrically operated breakers, and as these tests have been of great value, it occurred to them that a paper giving the results might be of service to other engineers interested in similar installations. Table I shows the .results of these tests. All the motors tested were of the three-phase, 60-cycle, 440-volt, induction, squirrel-cage type, except a few, which, on account of size and starting conditions, were of the wound-rotor type. The instruments used in making these tests were: An integrating watt-hour meter, a graphic ammeter, and a graphic voltmeter. These instruments were connected in each motor circuit, and a record of a day's run of 9 hours was obtained from each machine. From these tests, the running light load, the average all-clay load, and the instantaneous peak readings in amperes, volts, and kilowatt input, were obtained. By means of the characteristic curves obtained from these motors at the factory, the power factor, the efficiency, and the horsepower output were calculated for each particular test. Starting tests were made by the brake-arm method, in which the torque in pounds was measured directly on a spring balance.

A new $18-million hydrometallurgical ore treatment facility for the recovery of molybdenum oxide was dedicated at Climax, Colo., on November 19 by Climax Molybdenum Co., division of AMAX. The Company has been producing molybdenum from molybdenite (MoS2) ores since 1918. Now oxide values, formerly lost in the sulfide flotation plant tailing are to be processed to yield about 3 million Ib per year of metal. In 1965, Climax produced about 50% of world molybdenum from sulfide ore. This ore is mined at the rate of 42,000 tpd. The annual production of concentrate is 100 million lb containing 90% to 92% MoS2, or about 50 million lb of metal. As only a relatively small portion of the total Climax production is sufficiently enriched in oxide molybdenum to process through the new plant, 5700 tpd of selected ore containing 1.5 lb of Mo per ton is now treated by the new process.

This paper analyzes the effect of limited entry to flow at the wellbore on the steady-state productivity of a well. Wells that have been opened to flow along a fraction of their productive interval are termed wells with limited entry. Previous work treated the cases of a partially penetrating well, a well producing from the central portion of the productive interval and a well in which several intervals equally spaced were open to flow. In this paper the open interval can be located anywhere within the productive interval. Thus, in a sense, it generalizes previous work. The finite cosine transform was used to arrive at a solution for steady-state flow of a slightly compressible fluid. The solution was programmed for a CDC 1604 computer. Numerical vaIues for rd = 660 ft, r, = 1/4 ft, and range of sand thickness of 20 to 200 ft are presented in graphical form. The effect of rd and r, values on the result is shown in a table. The correct calculation of skin and damage ratio in the presence of limited entry to flow is explained and illustrated by examples. Moreover, the paper shows how to calculate the net decrease in productivity due to the combined effect of limited entry and perforations. INTRODUCTION In some wells only a fraction of the productive interval is open to flow. Location of this fraction is usually dictated by formation characteristics and reservoir behavior. For instance, if a gas cap exists, the open interval is located away from the gas-oil contact to prevent any possible gas coning. Wells that intentionally have been opened to flow along a fraction of their productive formation are tened wells with limited entry. Obviously, unintentional completions of this type also exist. Limited entry to flow decreases well productivity. Magnitude of the loss depends on the fraction of the formation open to flow, on the thickness of the sand, on the location of the open interval and on the ratio of rd /r, where r , is well radius and rd is the drainage radius of the well. The use of pressure buildup data on producing wells to calculate the condition of the formation around the wellbore is an accepted practice. van Everdingenl and Hurst2 introduced the concept of she skin factor s considered to be due to a thin layer of different permeability immediately around the wellbore. These authors dealt with the case of a well of complete radial geometry, i.e., a well with open-hole completion that completely penetrates the formation. The presence of a low-permeability skin results in a loss of productivity, as does limited entry. Therefore, if pressure buildup data obtained on a well with limited entry are used to establish the presence or absence of skin (i.e., formation damage), and a correction is not made for this loss of productivity, the calculations would result in an erroneous skin value. They might indicate the presence of formation damage when in reality there is none, or they might indicate a value larger than the true value. This could lead to an incorrect basis for planning remedial measures. Muskat3 studied the problem of partially penetrating wells for the case of incompressible flow. He presented equations and figures which allow estimation of loss in productivity. Brons and Marting,4 using equations based on Nisle's work,5 studied the loss of productivity for three cases. The first was for a partially penetrating well; the second was for a well producing from only the central portion of a productive interval; and the third was for a well in which several intervals equally spaced were open to flow. Their work was for steady-state depletion-type reservoirs wherein the well radius of drainage is established and the fluid is considered to be slightly compressible. Total crude fluorspar reserves in western Europe, containing more than 35 pct CaF*, are estimated at 12 million metric tons, while reserves in the USSR and Soviet sphere may exceed 5 million metric tons. The bulk of these reserves are concentrated in the USSR, Spain, United Kingdom, Western Germany, and Italy. Since published estimates of the tonnages of individual mines and explored deposits are not available for most countries in Europe, the estimates given in Table I for individual countries are necessarily approximate, as they have been compiled from various sources and modified and combined according to the author's judgment. The majority of fluorspar deposits in Europe belong to the late Paleozoic metallogenetic epochs and have been found within or along the borders of the Hercynian massifs. Deposits in the Central and Esterel massifs of France, those of Western and Eastern Germany, Sardinia, the Catalonian coastal range and the Sierra de 10s Santos in Spain, and those of Devonshire and Cornwall belong to the Hercynian metallogenetic epochs. The deposits in southern Norway and Sweden belong to the middle Paleozoic or later, those of northern England to the late Paleozoic or later, those of northern Spain and Greece to the late Mesozoic, and those of northern and probably central Italy and Switzerland to the early Tertiary. Fluorspar occurs typically in veins, lenses, and stringers, but also in bedded replacement deposits and pockets, and may be colorless to white, yellow, green, pink, brown, blue, or purple to almost black. Except for the colorless variety, the only kind which can be used for the optical industry, the color of the fluorspar does not affect its ultimate use,

THE Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of .the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Trust drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T. 16S., R.15W. This well is located almost, on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.15S., R.15W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.1

Laboratory data and field tests indicate that substantial losses of valuable coal can be caused by wind erosion. Wind tunnel tests show the effects of wind velocity and particle sizing on the amount of coal lost while in transit. Different coals were evaluated to determine the variables associated with wind erosion. The erosion losses can be substantially reduced by using a binder, or crusting agent, to consolidate the surfaces of the coal into a solid mass which resists erosion. This not only reduces economic loss but minimizes pollution.

Graphs representing the standard free-energy of formation as a function of temperature for 21 fluorides are presented, along with estimated values for the standard free-energy of formation of 20 atedadditional fluorides. A few of the many possible uses of these data in metallurgical calculations are discussed, including the fluorination of oxides, sulphides, metallurgicaland chlorides, and the reduction of metal fluorides. RECENT papers which have presented free-energy data for oxides, sulphides, chlorides, carbonates, sulphates, and silicates in the form of free energy vs. temperature plots,1-5 have found important uses in teaching and metallurgical development work. This method of presentation of thermo-dynamic data serves to make available in readily usable form thermodynamic constants which are scattered throughout the literature, and to show by graphical means the stability relations which exist between the compounds of a given type. It is certainly desirable to have these free-energy-temperature diagrams for as many types of compounds as are of present or potential use in metallurgical processes. Thus, even though there are but few uses of metallic fluorides in extractive metallurgy today, the potential uses of fluorine processes are of great importance and serve as the principal justification of this paper. Recent developments in the production of fluoro-carbons have resulted in vastly improved methods for the production and handling of fluorine and corrosive fluorides, with consequent reduction in costs.".' The extractive metallurgist should no longer overlook possible fluorine processes when development of a new process for a relatively high unit-price metal is being considered. In a previous paperv he author outlined in some detail the importance and use of free-energy data in metallurgical calculations and also discussed the properties of a standard free-energy vs. temperature diagram. The same method of presentation is adopted in this paper, and the reader is referred to the earlier work for explanations of the use of free-energy data. Thermodynamic Data This paper presents standard free-energy vs. temperature diagrams, Figs. 1 and 2, for those fluorides for which the major thermodynamic constants are known. In the calculations of the standard free-energy of formation (AGO), values of the enthalpy of formation at 298°K (?Ho,) were taken from "Selected Values of Thermodynamic Constants"8 most of the values of standard entropy at 298°K (S°298) were taken from "Selected Values"," but in a few cases the values given by Kelley9 ere preferred; data for the Phase changes came from "selected Values" and several of Kellley's publics- tions;0-12 and most of the specific-heat data were taken from Kelley.l0 The appendix gives a detailed list of the sources of the data. As explained in an earlier paper,6 he accuracy of some of the standard free-energy relationships is not high. An error of +1 kcal at 1000°C is expected in most of the curves of Figs. 1 and 2. The error may be as high as +3 kcal in some of the curves. Rather than attempt to estimate the reliability of each curve, the source of the data used is reported in the appendix, and the reader may compare these data with newer values as they become available. Figs. 1 and 2 fail to show values for the fluorides of many important metals. In most cases this is because the entropy of the metallic fluoride is unknown. For preliminary calculations it is often useful to have available the best estimate of an unknown datum, rather than no information at all. With this in mind, Table I lists estimated standard free-energy values for a number of important metallic fluorides not included in Figs. 1 and 2. The values reported in Table I were, calculated by Brewer et al.13 and are based on estimated entropy values. The estimated uncertainty of the values for each fluoride were calculated from the uncertainty values given by Brewer1' for ?H°, and the entropy function.

Few people in the industry today are competent to comment on the O.G. system for vessel covers, but with papers as well prepared as Mr. Bradley's we will soon be well informed. I would like to direct these comments to Mr. Klaes of Ford Motor Company. Mr. Klaes' description of their steaming hood agrees with our experience at Weirton. We have been able to stay within design limits and, as a result, have had few problems with our auxiliary equipment. Our main problem, as with Ford, has been thinning of our vessel cover tubes. At Weirton, controlled circulation, high pressure boilers are in use as heat recovery units above the BOP vessels. The boilers are provided with "off cycle' oil firing equipment. A Venturi type wet gas scrubber follows the boiler to complete the vessel draft system.

The evaluation of potential in situ copper leaching deposits requires a thorough examination of the geologic, mineralogic, hydrologic and physiological characteristics of the ore body. The decision to develop the deposit is made with these data along with leaching properties, estimated copper recovery, and economic analysis. A test blast followed by pilot leaching can a so be used for further evaluation and to reduce uncertainty regarding the deposit's potential. This report describes a number of ground characterization techniques that can be used to evaluate potential deposits. Field methods include geologic mapping, groundwater hydrology, core drilling, geophysical logs, permeability testing, and in-situ stress measurements while laboratory tests include assaying, mineralogy, leaching, rock physical properties, size analysis, and computer simulation.

THE Climax district is in northeastern Lake County, Colorado, on Fremont Pass (elevation 11,320 ft.) where the continental divide runs east-west joining high peaks of the Mosquito Range with the Sawatch Range, prominent ranges of the central Rocky Mountains. The mining towns of Leadville and Kokomo are thirteen miles to the south and seven miles to the northwest, respectively. Good highways lead to Denver (100 miles) by way of Kokomo, Loveland Pass, and Idaho Springs, and to Colorado Springs by way of Leadville. The ore deposit and mine are about one mile east of Fremont Pass and 600 ft. higher on the southwestern flank of Bartlett Mountain, a peak in the Mosquito Range. The molybdenite deposit lies within the Colorado mineral belt extending across the Rocky Mountains from Jamestown and Boulder to Silverton and Telluride. (See Fig. 1.) Fremont Pass is a broad open divide separating the drainage of the Tenmile River (Pacific) from that of the East Fork of the Arkansas River (Atlantic) ; but the mountains to the east and west are extremely rugged; altitudes in the vicinity vary from 11,000 to 14,000 ft. The oxygen activity and concentration were measured in Fe-Cr-0 melts in equilibrium with an oxide phase at 1600°C (2912°F). The activity was determined by ,use of the following solid oxide -electrolyte galvanic cell CY-Cr8,(s) I ZrOz(CaO) I Fe-CY-G(saturated)(l) The oxygen concentration decreases with increasing Cr concentration to about 270 ppm 0 at about 7pct CY and then increases gradually. The activity coefficient of oxygen (fo) decreases with increasing Cr. In melts containing up to about 20 pct Cr, log f is approximately a linear function of wt pct Cr with a slope (e q 2) of —0.037. The activity of chromium was calculated and found to exhibit a small negative deviation from Raoult's law. From the activity and solubility data for low chromium melts, the free energy of formation of chromite, FeCr204, was found to be -79.8kcal per mole where pure liquid chromium and oxygen at I wt pct in Fe are the standard states. ThE effect of chromium on the chemical behavior of dissolved oxygen in liquid iron is of great importance in controlling the deoxidation of steels containing a significant amount of chromium. Chen and chipman' equilibrated Fe-Cr melts in the presence and absence of slag with hydrogen-water vapor mixtures. They concluded that at 1595°C chromite was the oxide phase in equilibrium with Fe-Cr alloys containing less than 5.5 pct Cr while at higher chromium concentration Cr,O, was the stable phase. In the composition range 0 to 10 pct Cr they found that the interaction coefficient, was equal to -0.041. Turk-dogan,' Schenck and Steinmetz,, and pargeter4 measured egr) in a similar manner and found the value to be -0.064,-0.04, and -0.052, respectively. McLean and Be11 evaluated egr) from their data on the equilibrium of Fe-Cr-Al-0 alloys with H2/H20 mixtures and found it to be -0.058. However, McLean and Bell's value should only be considered an estimate because the effect of aluminum on the activity coefficient of oxygen is about a hundred times greater than that of chromium. Consequently, an error in the value of egl) used, which at the present time is not well-known, or an error in aluminum analysis, which is present in very small quantities, will result in a significant error in egr). Fischer et a1.6 determined the interaction coefficient (eEr) in Fe-Cr-0 melts not in equilibrium with an oxide phase and containing less than 18 wt pct Cr at 1600°C electrochemically. They determined a value of -0.031 for egr). Hilty et aL7 measured the oxygen content of Fe-Cr melts in equilibrium with an oxide phase containing up to 50 pct Cr. They found that the solubility of oxygen decreased as the chromium content increased to about 6 pct Cr and then increased gradually. They concluded that the equilibrium oxide phase was chromite below 3 pct Cr, distorted spinel from 3 to 9 pct Cr, and Cr,04 above 9 pct Cr. Adachi and lwamotoa also investigated this system, but did not find Cr30,. They X-rayed the equilibrium oxide phases and did not find the presence of Cr,O,. They also X-rayed the oxide phase extracted from a 65 pct Cr melt which was heat treated and did not find metallic chromium as would be expected if Cr3O4 were the equilibrium oxide phase as indicated by the reaction : 3Cr3O4 — 4Cr2O:, + Cr [lj It was the purpose of the present investigation to determine the effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of oxygen in Fe-Cr melts by measuring the activity and solubility of oxygen equilibrated with an oxide phase in the composition range 0.18 to 50.5 wt pct Cr at 1600°C (2912°F). FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,400. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service. "It shall be within the discretion of the Board of Directors to establish a medal to be known as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal to be awarded at such a time and under such rules as may be determined by the Board of Directors, for Distinguished Achievement in Mining Administration." The establishment of this medal was announced at the annual meeting in February, 1932, the term "mining" being defined in its broad sense to include metallurgy and petroleum. In recent years, with the advent of new steelmaking procedures, the emphasis has turned away from conventional teeming and has been directed toward continuous casting. This paper points out the fact that there are still new methods being considered to decrease the problems and costs associated with conventional teeming. Although Inland has had no experience with the repair of mold lugs, we do find some problem with damaged ears associated with mechanically capped steel. When pouring bottle tops, any crane movement or leak from the pouring nozzle may result in steel over the top of the mold which, in turn, may result in the shearing of the mold lugs during stripping. Recent back pouring practices increase the chances of this occurring. At Inland's steelmaking shops, we have tried to combat this problem by various methods such as burning the steel from around the top of the mold at the pouring stand with oxy-gas torches. Last year, No. 4 BOF began a conversion from round to elliptically shaped bottle top caps. This change has greatly reduced the chance of splashing due to crane swing by increasing the dimension in the direction on normal swing. The answer to this particular problem is, however, tighter control of pouring performance. We are presently engaged in a process of re-education of personnel and experimentation with different materials and designs of nozzles, heads, and sleeves to help us achieve our goal.
