SCHLESINGER,* Denver, Colo.-Two problems are of great interest to the radium manufacturer at the present tine: The first is to perfect a process, more efficient and more economical, which is capable of treating a greater variety of ores. . Practically all the radium now manufactured in the United States is extracted from carnotite ores and these vary a great deal according to their location. The amount of sulfates contained in the ore is of particular importance, and any straight acid-leaching method, such as developed by the Bureau of Mines, becomes prohibitive when the ore contains more than 0.5 per cent. of sulfates, as the sulfates go into solution and naturally precipitate the radium as insoluble radium sulfate. Since the amount of ore obtained from any one claim is usually comparatively small, it is necessary to work a number of claims in different localities, and a process, in order to be commercially satisfactory, should handle all of these ores. In other words, it would be entirely unprofitable for radium manufacturers to employ any process which cannot treat any but sulfate-free ores. He must deal with carnotite containing appreciable amounts of sulfates, and must be able to work this in with the other ores. Carbonaceous ores from certain sections in Utah; which are known to contain as pinch as 1.0 per cent. and more of volatile matters, are prone to a, nitric acid-leaching process. The second problem relates to the treatment of concentrates. There is no doubt that a very large amount of low-grade ore, containing less than 0.75 per cent. uranium oxide, is available. Intergranular corrosion in corrosion-resistant chromium-nickel steels has been widely discussed in the last few years. So far as the author knows, nothing has been published which definitely shows that this tendency can be eliminated, although suggestions have been made that a remedy is possible if certain specifications are satisfied. Strauss, Schottky and Hinnüberl suggested an increase in chromium content to an extent that would prevent the impoverishment of chromium on carbide precipitation sufficient to cause impaired corrosion resistance in the matrix. Pilling2 suggested an increase in nickel, so that the stability of the austenite matrix would be increased. Aborn and Bain3 say that "intergranular attack—may be eliminated by preventing carbide precipitation (e. g., by lowering the carbon content or somehow raising its solubility) or by precipitating it permanently under conditions which will not remove chromium from solid solution so drastically at any points." In a later paper Aborn and Bain4 state that many different metallic elements, tungsten, vanadium, copper, aluminum, molybdenum, titanium and zirconium, have been added in small percentages to increase the stability of these alloys, but that it has been reported that according to the copper sulfate test these added elements act only to retard the intergranular corrosion. and that increased nickel and chromium contents have similar effects. Newell5 showed that the lower the quenching temperature before reheating, the less severe was the intergranular attack.

Security restrictions on processing uranium raw materials to yellow cake were lifted in August 1955, coincidental with the Geneva Conference on Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy. Numerous reports and technical papers on uranium extraction and recovery methods have appeared since that time, and it is doubtful that another review of past and current practices would add much to the technical literature. Development of some promising procedures was arrested, perhaps temporarily, by mechanical handling problems or peculiarities in the chemistry of uranium and associated elements. Some methods have been incompletely evaluated and still others that tested well in the laboratory and pilot plant are dormant because of competition from other processes, or because of their restricted applicability to particular ore types that have not reached quantity production. In view of the vast number of new ideas and procedures that have been advanced, considered, and tested, it would be futile to attempt a comprehensive survey in this article. Only a cross section of the field, based on random sampling, can be provided here. The authors have chosen, therefore, to discuss some innovations that may provide a clue to uranium ore processing techniques of the future. An effort has been made to select unpublicized new metallurgical techniques or interesting applications of established principles and procedures. With the two exceptions noted later, all the research to be described has been sponsored by the AEC. Physical Beneficiation: Individuals and firms engaged in mining and processing uranium ores, and in related research activities, have often had considerable experience in ore dressing. As might be expected, therefore, a prodigious amount of work has been done on physical beneficiation testing of uranium ores, particularly in efforts to concentrate subgrade materials. Although some success has been attained on specific ores by gravity concentration and flotation, ratios of concentration have generally been low and there has been difficulty in making a throwaway tailing.

The abundance and value of the tellurium minerals of Colorado is well known, but, as yet, few analyses have been made of them, and I offer these as a small contribution to the chemistry of these valuable ores. 1. Native Tellurium.—The specimens from which the analyses of this mineral were made are from the " John Jay" Mine, Boulder County, Colorado, where it occurs in quite large masses, though mixed with more or less silica and iron pyrites. It is usually a finegrained, tin-white mineral, but sometimes occurs in distorted, hexagonal prisms in cavities in the quartz. Before the blowpipe it gives the reactions for tellurium, sulphur and iron; by cupellation, it yields a small amount of gold. An analysis of a coarsely crystallized specilnen gave the following results : Specific gravity, 5.10.5. To supply this deficiency Germany now must rely almost exclusively on the Rumanian fields, which in 1939 produced about 35,000,000 bbl in ewes, of the Rumanian civil consumption. Most of the roofing granules produced in Pennsylvania are made by two companies at three plants. The Advance Industrial Supply Co. has three quarries and a mill at Gladhill Station, in southern Adams County. The Funkhouser Company is actively engaged in mining, quarrying and milling at Charmian, about one mile west of Gladhill Station, and at Delta, in southern York County. These three plants produced approximately 100,000 short tons of granules in 1943. The production of rooling granules in 1937 for the whole country was only about 500,000 tons, generally indicating the large growth of the industry since that time. The fundamentals of producing roofing granules were discussed comprehensively by G. W. Josephson in a paper before the Industrial Minerals Division in October 1943 (TP 1725, this volume page 460). The purpose of this paper is to describe the actual methods of mining the rock and milling it to make roofing granules, as practiced by the three Pennsylvania plants. Mining and Milling Funkhouser Company (Delta) The Funkhouser Company, near Delta, in southern York County, Pennsylvania, operates three joined quarries and a mine in the Peach Bottom slate. The joined quarries extend 1200 ft. in a northeast-southwest direction along the strike of the slate cleavage and are about 200 ft. .wide. The working face is about 45 ft. high. The quarrying operation is rather simple: Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers, I-in. and 1 1/4-in., with hollow drill steel, are used to undercut the quarry face with 10-ft. holes. The face is "blown" and allowed to slump on the quarry floor. Loaded by a Marion electric shovel into trucks, the shattered rock is taken to the primary crusher 2500 ft. away. In addition to the normal quarrying operations, a drift into the northeast wall of the middle quarry was begun about 1935, and has advanced about 2000 ft. since then. Rooms have been driven at angles to the drift along choice beds of slate. The drifts and rooms have a roof more than 35 ft. high and the main drift and rooms are all more than 40 ft. wide. There is no cribbing at any place in the mine. Several of the rooms were driven upward on a 5' slope and in some of them there was stop-ing. Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers are used, and only wet drilling is practiced. When visited in January 1940, an electric shovel was operating at the head of the drift, scooping up the slate blasted out of the working face. This, too, is trucked to the primary crusher. Some of the better quality slate is saved for making slate shingles. The primary crusher, which is a No. 30 McCulley gyratory, receives the slate from the trucks and crushes it to about a-in. size (Fig. I). This product travels by a 30-in. belt conveyor to Niagara vibrating screens with 2-in. holes. The minus a-in. product moves to a storage silo by bucket

AT present the demands of the United States for strontium are met by imports from Germany, England and Canada, which vary considerably in proportions of ore and finished salts, in tonnage and in value. Statistics for the period 1926-1932 are given in Table 1. These deposits are large enough to command interest, par-ticularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investi¬gation of the, mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation' in the spring of 1934. Mr. D. F. Hewett, who had general charge of the investigation, Mr. W. T. Schaller and Mr. M. I. Goldman contributed many helpful suggestions. Mr. N. H. The ideal fuel for burning ceramic wares is the one that, among other characteristics, has little or no sulfur. For that reason wood was long considered the most desirable fuel but its high cost has practically eliminated its use except in regions where it is very abundant or other circumstances warrant its choice. The fuels commonly employed are natural and producer gas, oil, and coal. The last named is undoubtedly the most important, not only in this country but abroad. Occasionally anthracite is used but the larger part is bituminous. The quality of the coal used depends on the kind and the value of the products being manufactured. For some materials, such as common brick, hollow block, etc., the quality of the coal is of less importance than in the manufacture of polychrome terra cotta, pottery, porcelain, etc. It is obvious that in burning clays that contain notable amounts of pyrite, marcasite or gypsum, as is the case with many common clays, the sulfur content of the fuel is of much less importance. The permissible amount of sulfur in the coal used will depend on the kind of product being manufactured. "A good sample1 of coal commonly used in pottery ovens has something like this quantity of sulfur: total sulfur, 1.20 per cent.; sulfur in ash, 0.11 per cent.; volatile sulfur, 1.09 per cent." This is based on English pottery practice. Correspondence with a. number of leading manufacturers in this country has produced the following figures: Sanitary Ware.—(a) 1.0 per cent, maximum, (b) 0.5 per cent. Sewer Pipe.—(a) 1.2 per cent., (b) 1.1 per cent, present run, 3.0 per cent, has been used. Terra Cotta.—(a) 0.5 per cent, basis of contract, 1.0 per cent, approximate. Pottery.—1.0 per cent, contract, 1.5 per cent, probable content. Enameled Brick.—1.3 per cent, maximum, (a) and (6) designate different firms giving figures. The iron-ore deposits of Iron county, Utah, which rival those of Lake Superior in extent, are situated 275 miles south of Salt Lake City, and 25 miles south of Lund, a station on the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad. The range of hills containing the deposits has a general NE-SW. strike, and rise from a few hundred to 2,000 ft. above the Escalante desert, the ore being included in an area of 5 by 20 miles. The basal rock of these hills is diorite-porphyry. The flanks of the range are covered with limestone supposed to be of Carboniferous age, underlain in some localities by quartzite. Both formations are conformable to the porphyry, and are the remnants of beds that formerly covered the highest peaks, but have been removed subsequently by erosion. In the central and southern parts of the range, beds of Cretaceous sandstone rest unconformably on the eruptives. Rhyolite-flows occur to the south and southeast of the iron-ore deposits; and dikes and sheets of post-Tertiary lava are common. With the exception of a few springs, the range is destitute of water. Sage-brush, stunted cedars and the common desert-bushes constitute the only vegetation. Large beds of coal of poor quality occur in Cretaceous sandstones 15 miles east of the ore-deposits.

The transient response of earth formations may be tlcter.171ined by means of four electrodes mounted coli-rienrly on n sonde. Exponentially decaying current pules are applied to one pair of electrodes and the re.rrrlting voltage transient at the other pair is recorded. It is shown by theoreticol analysis and verified by laboratory experiments that this arrangement readily yields the direct resistivity of the formation and provides valrrable additional information as well. INTRODUCTION Although electrical transients have been employed with moderate success in geophysical prospecting, their application to well logging has received virtually no attention in technical literature. In the conventional direct resistivity logging methods only the zero frequency impedance of the formation under study is measured, and no information is obtained regarding its reactive characteristics. Since the use of certain transients appears to offer some advantages in this respect, experiments were performed on a laboratory scale to investigate this possibility. This investigation was limited to a study of a four-electrode array where both the receiving and transmitting electrode pairs are mounted on a logging sonde, and decaying exponential pulses are applied to the transmitting electrodes. The data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. Dragline vs. Bucket-line Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 106 gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new 7-cu. ft, bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and in operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ Per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These Percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind- The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft- (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. Yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10 gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costin 4¢ Per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ Per cu. yd. Because of small yardage, new equipment is not warranted, therefore we can assume that the dredges of both types are used equip-ment, fully depreciated. Dismantling, mov-

THE purpose of this work has been to investigate recrystallization characteristics of zirconium after cold working and annealing. In order to do this, hafnium-contain ing crystal bars of Foote Mineral Co. iodide zirconium were selected for high purity. maximum diameter (about ½ in.), brightness of surface, and absence of core wire. A typical lot analysis is shown in Table I. In order to obtain uniformity of starting material, all bars were cold-swaged to 0.310 in. diam, annealed for 2 hr at 1000°C, and furnace cooled.

DURING the past 5 years, five new copper-smelting plants have been built and put into operation in the State of Arizona. The monthly copper output from these plants averages from 5,000,000 to 18,000,000 lb. Previously, there never was as much activity in copper-smelting plant construction in the same length of time in all the rest of the world. Naturally, in this amount of work, some new problems were met and new features in plant design and. equipment developed. Some of these features are described in this paper. CONCENTRATE HAULING, UNLOADING AND SAMPLING SYSTEM (a) Concentrate Car The International Smelting Co. has provided at its plant at Miami specially designed cars for hauling the concentrates from the mills of the Inspiration Copper Co. and the Miami Copper Co.. The car has a bottom that is readily made tight to hold flotation concentrates and is quickly and cheaply unloaded. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show views and details of the car. The main feature of this car is the slot in the bottom throughout its length, which is closed by means of short planks that overlap like ship-lap as shown by Fig. 1. At one end of the car an iron gate operated by a screw and hand wheel is provided, which clamps or presses the planks together, making the bottom tight. A removable tapered plug rests vertically over this gate when the loading of the concentrates at the mill commences.

(communication to the Secretary*).-When asked to discuss Mr. Feild's paper, I felt most highly complimented to have the privilege of commenting on such a worthy and needed piece of apparatus. In consideration of the importance of the viscosity of blast-furnace slags and the relation existing between the' melting point of a slag and its viscosity, the introduction of this apparatus should be a welcome means or assistant in the study of the physical properties of a slag. Up to the present time, it is A fact that this side of the practical working of the blast furnace has been sadly neglected by those investigating slags. It is easily seen that the fluidity of a slag is of as great importance as its melting point. It is not necessarily true that a slag having a low melting point will have a correspondingly low viscosity or be highly fluid. For example, a slag having a melting point of 1,100° C. may have to be superheated to, say,1,300° C., in order to have as high a fluidity as another slag whose melting point is, say, 1,250° C. The latter in this case would be the more economical. This point has been brought out very nicely by Mr. Feild. Before discussing this paper further, I think it will be well to outline some of the points, a discussion of which may be in order:

Coinpletely integrated thin-film circuits inco?,porating more than 1000 active and passive elements have been fabricated reproducibly in the laboratory by evaporation of- all components. A 180-stage modified shift register comprising 540 CdSe TFT's, 360 resistovs, and 180 capacitors was deposited upon a glass substrate during one pump-down of the vacuum systeitl. Experimental units have been operated for more than 5000 hr at temperatures uP to 85°C without failure of any slages. The present pupper reviews the charvactevistics of evaporated thin-film transistors (TFT's) and discusses their application to integrnted circuils. INTEGRATED circuits most widely used today are based upon silicon technology, with the circuits formed on the surface of a block of single-crystal silicon1 or on a block of sapphire 2,3 upon which a thin layer of silicon has been deposited. Transistor patterns and interconnections are defined by photographic procedures using photoresist masking. Large groups of transistors are produced in batches which undergo many processing steps, some of which are carried out at elevated temperatures. Passive elements are formed by treatment of the semiconductor surface or are deposited by evaporation alongside the active elements. The size and complexity of the circuits are limited by defects in the devices and by the size of the available single-crystal chips. Capacitative coupling to the semiconducting substrate may also limit useful size and frequency response of the circuits. An alternative approach to integrated circuits is based upon the deposition by evaporation of all circuit components upon a noncrystalline, insulating substrate such as glass.4 Thin-film field-effect transistors,1'6 known as TFT's, can be deposited in large arrays on glass or plastic substrates at the same time the associated passive elements are being deposited. Although still in the research stage the all-evaporated approach is expected to offer certain advantages for many applications. In particular, the use of thin films upon a noncrystalline substrate offers the prospect of producing complex, large-area circuits not now feasible with single-crystal silicon. Important applications of this type include memory arrays for computers and imaging devices for television. The ease with which the evaporated TFT's can be deposited may permit continuous, automated production methods not possible with high-temperature batch processing. Recent advances7'8 in the fabrication of thin-film transistors have led to greatly improved reproduci-bility and life of the TFT's. Experimental circuits having over 1000 active and passive elements deposited upon a common glass substrate are currently being produced in the laboratory. The present paper reviews recent progress in the development of the TFT and in its application to integrated circuits. I) DESCRIPTION OF THE THIN-FILM FIELD-EFFECT TRANSISTOR The TFT is a field-effect transistor of the type having the control gate separated from the semiconductor by a thin insulating spacer. Although its operation resembles that of the silicon MOS transistorg its construction is based entirely on thin-film techniques. Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of an evaporated TFT deposited upon a glass substrate compared with a silicon MOS transistor deposited upon single-crystal sapphire.3 The semiconductor in the TFT is a poly crystal line layer, of a material which can be readily evaporated, such as cadmium sulfide, cadmium selenide,l0 or tellurium." Silicon monoxide layers have usually served as the gate insulator, but other oxides, sulfides, and fluorides may be used. Film thicknesses range from a few hundred to a few thousand angstroms. The source, drain, and gate electrodes in the TFT are of metal. Qpical source-drain gap dimensions are 0.0003 x 0.030 in., with a gate strip whose width slightly overlaps the source and drain. The source and drain electrodes should make low impedance contacts to the semiconductor. With cadmium sulfide films, gold is a satisfactory material for underlying electrodes, while aluminum is preferable for overlying electrodes.12 Considerable variation in design of the TFT is permissible, with the electrodes being

The difficulty of securing for experimental research the actual conditions to be found in practice very frequently deters many from engaging in such work. Probably no metallurgical operation is more difficult to imitate in the laboratory than the blast-furnace process. So many complex reactions take place within the furnace, under such varied conditions of time and temperature, with innumerable mechanical, physical, and chemical mutations, that while the results reached may approximate those obtained in practice, there is always something wanting. Much work of this kind has, nevertheless, been done, and is now being undertaken. We are indebted to the bold minds who have attempted it for our present real knowledge of the blast-furnace process. Not that those who have performed series of experiments at a few given temperatures can claim the honor. It required more than this—the ability to make a summary of all preceding experiments, to supply those which were wanting, and to confirm those that were doubtful. Sir I. PREPARATION of mechanically loaded coal in mines where seams contain considerable impurities is a subject that requires careful consideration before machines are installed, unless provision is made at the tipple for its preparation. Conditions vary a great deal in the different seams, so much so that a mechanical loader may be unsuccessful in one seam and yet the same machine may make good in another where conditions are different. The effect of impurities in the coal seam on mechanical loading will also vary according to the thickness of the seam. In thin seams impurities will be more difficult to remove than from thick seams, as will appear later. For the past several years the New River Co. has done considerable experimenting with loading equipment and during this process has changed from one machine to another.
