The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. . The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

The low-grade talc deposits in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, are associated with a mafic-ultramafic rock complex that is part of a widely distributed schist and gneiss group. These rocks form a synform structure overlying Inner Piedmont lithology. Paragenetic sequence of the Tallapoosa talc is interpreted as enstatite-anthophyllitetalc. Talc occurs as massive boulders formed by the alteration of enstatite-anthophyllite and as finely disseminated discrete particles in the enclosing saprolite matrix. Weathered rock reaches depths as great as 60 feet. The quality and quantity of the talc, however, are variable. Mineral analyses of the talc-bearing samples, by petrographic grain count, indicate a talc content of 16 to 26 percent. Most of the talc occurs as plates or scales that are moderately stained with limonite. Fibrous talc also occurs in the deposits and is often mistaken for anthophyllite asbestos which is intimately associated with the talc. The size, shape, and occurrence of the talc deposits precludes any method of min¬ing other than open-cut. A small-scale mining operation began in the district in 1969. Potential capacity of the operation is 5, 000 tons per year. Inferred reserves, based on field investigations, are placed at approximately 8 million tons. PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, MN. Laboratory investigations have led to the development of the Platsol process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and platinum group metals (PGM). To complete the prefeasibility study, a fully integrated, 10-day pilot plant trial was undertaken. The trial consisted of high-temperature (>220ºC or >428ºF) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5 to 10 g/L chloride (the Platsol process). This was followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM recovery from solution, conventional copper solvent extractions/electrowinning (SX/EW) and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested during the trial period was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate. It assayed 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t (0.041 oz/st) Au, 2.2 g/t (0.064 oz/st) Pt and 9.9 g/t (0.289 oz/st) Pd Laboratory results were confirmed and, with minor adjustments of the laboratory Platsol conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: 99.6% Cu, 98.9% Ni, 96% Co, 94.6% Pd, 96 % Pt and 89.4 % Au.

Zinc ranks third and lead fourth in world nonferrous metal conumption. In 1972 the free world consumed 3,333,000 mt of refined lead and 4,422,000 mt of refined zinc. The lead tonnage was divided into the following end uses: storage batteries (42%), lead allows (7%), pigments and chemicals (11%), cable sheathing (9%), gasoline additives (13%), pipes and sheets (8%), and miscellaneous uses (10%). The corresponding distribution of zinc uses in 1972 was galvanizing (39%), die casting (26%), brass (15%), rolled zinc (8%), oxide excluding American Process zinc made directly from concentrate (6%), and other uses (6%). The pattern of usage of lead and zinc varies considerably from country to country. During 1972 in the USA 49% of refined lead was consumed in storage batteries, 19% in gasoline additives, and only 3% in cable sheathing, whereas in the United Kingdom 28% of the lead was consumed in batteries, 14% in cable sheathing, and 14% in gasoline additives. For zinc the major US uses were die casting (41%) and galvanizing (37%), with about 3% consumed as rolled zinc; corresponding usages in the same applications in France were 12, 28 and 28% and in Australia 12, 67, and 3%, respectively. For nearly two decades, MINExpo International has held the title to the biggest show in mining. The 2012 MINExpo is expected to be the biggest yet, with nearly 1,800 exhibitors rolling out the newest equipment and services across 12 halls. From September 24 to 26 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, MINExpo will present the newest in everything from automation and robotics to safety and communications equipment to reclamation services, and much, much more. The last MINExpo, in 2008, had nearly 38,500 visitors. The show?s sponsor, the National Mining Association, expects this year will be even bigger, with more than 40,000 visitors over three days. Twenty talks on the issues facing mining today are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, but the real action will happen out on the floor. That?s where ultra haul trucks big enough to carry as much as 363 t (400 st) of rock will be assembled next to underground loaders able to lift more than 20 t (22 st) in one scoop. Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, Sandvik, Atlas Copco: all the big names in mining equipment will be there. Their massive earthmoving equipment and mining machines are the centerpiece of the show. Preassembly for the largest pieces begins on August 6, 2012.

Porphyry-type copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) deposits typically occur in the Phanerozoic rocks and have been well-documented. During the past two decades, a number of porphyry-type Cu-Mo deposits that range in age from 1055 Ma to 2970 Ma have been identified in the Precambrian rocks of Australia, Canada, China, Finland, India. Namibia and Zambia. The Malanjkhand porphyry copper deposit M.P., India is estimated to contain 789 Mt (870 million st) averaging 0.83% copper (mill headgrade); 0.004% molybdenum; 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) gold; 6 g/t (0.175 oz/st) silver and a cap of 7.5 Mt (8.2 million st) of oxide ore averaging 0.8% copper. The economic potential of the expanded copper mining milling, smelting and refining complex is expected to yield cathode copper 118.6 kt (130,700 st); molybdic oxide 830 t (914 st); gold 1.9 t (61,732 oz); silver 46.6 t (1.5 million oz); sulfuric acid 240 kt (264,500 st), copper from leach dumps 11.5 kt (12,600 st); nickel 24 t (26,400 st); cobalt 84 t (92,600 st); bismuth 16 t (17.6 st); selenium 48 t (53 st), tellurium 4.8 t (5.3 st).

The Bureau has identified several ventilation techniques and a water spray application for reducing auger mining dust levels. The dust control methods all work by improving air quantity or flow patterns at the face. Section airflow is maximized by reducing air leakage between entries. Sealing stoppings with brushed- on mortar, containing fiberglass additives, reduces leakage. Heading airflow is maximized by properly installing the brattice curtain and keeping the area between the curtain and rib free from obstructions. The brattice curtains should be hung at least 1.7 m (5.5 ft) from the ribs in 7.9 m (26 ft) wide entries and kept less than 4.6 m (15 ft) from the face. A tight curtain seal is created by using the mine air pressure to force the curtain against the timbers, roof and floor of the mine. Using both a blowing curtain and an exhausting curtain will isolate some face workers from dusty air. The Bureau designed, auger clearer spray system, can be used to force heading air across the active face. Laboratory tests indicate that the auger clearer spray system can increase face velocities by more than 0.5 m/sec (100 ft/min), while using less than 0.13 l/sec (2.0 gal/min) of water.

The thin film balance (TFB) technique was used to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses (H3 between two air bubbles in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and electrolyte (NaCl) solutions. The results were used to determine the magnitudes of the hydrophobic forces (K232) using the extended DLVO theory. The Km values determined from He measurement allowed us to predict disjoining pressure isotherms, which were found to be in excellent agreement with those obtained experimentally using a bike-wheel film holder. The rate of film thinning was measured at low SDS concentrations with varying amounts of electrolyte (NaCl) added. In general film thinning was controlled by the capillary pressure during the initial stages, while it was controlled by the surfaces forces during the later stages. At low NaCl concentrations, it was possible to predict the rate of film thinning using the Reynolds equation, provided that the driving force was corrected for the contributions from the hydrophobic force, which in turn were determined from the KZ32 values obtained from the He values measured experimentally. At high NaCl concentrations, where it was difficult to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses, the contributions from the hydrophobic forces were determined by fitting the film thinning data to the Reynolds equation. The K232 values obtained using both the equilibrium film thickness and the film thinning measurements showed that hydrophobic force deceased with increasing surfactant and salt concentrations. It was found that the hydrophobic force in foam films was very sensitive to the added electrolyte concentration.

The Carache Canyon Prospect consists of a hypabyssal breccia pipe which intrudes a gently dipping sequence of Cretaceous Mancos Formation and Mesa Verde Group shales and sandstones. This sedimentary sequence is intruded by a number of Oligocene (34-30 Ma) calc- alkaline sills. The formation of the breccia pipe and its subsequent gold mineralization is related to the emplacement of an alkaline intrusive complex dated between 30-26 Ma. An exceptionally large block within the pipe provides compelling evidence that brecciated sills and sedimentary rocks form a relict stratigraphy that collapsed 400-800 ft (120-240 m) below their counterparts outside the pipe without substantial changes in stratigraphic position. Native gold and sulfide mineralization within and around the pipe occurs in fractures that are primarily controlled by competency differences between sills and sedimentary rocks and secondarily controlled by ductility contrasts between the relatively brittle Mancos Formation hornfels and the more ductile Menefee Group shales. The resulting pattern of gold mineralization is a series of stacked, tabular, mineralized sills and sandstone separated by barren shale in an annular region along the southwest margin of the pipe. A series of near-vertical, subparallel, sill and sandstone breccias separated by barren or weakly mineralized shale breccia occur within shallow levels of the pipe.

A mining company plans to extend its surface coal-mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accountings for the site shows an overall Neutralization Potential to Maximum Potential Acidity Ratio (NP:MPA) of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to be mined. If traditional dragline-mining methods are used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. To prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using truck-shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, amine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Therefore, mining this site should not result in the formation of AMD.

The Ohio Valley Coal Company is expand- ing its Powhatan Mine No. 6 near Alledonia, Ohio. This expansion includes a 20 rn (65 ft) height in crease for an existing 44 rn (145 ft) coal refuse - slurry impoundment dam. The dam is being raised by upstream construction which will involve placement of more than 15 m (50 ft) of new fill over an existing reinforced concrete decant structure. This structure is 0.76 rn (30 in.) square inside and its deepest portion was under 24 m (80 ft) of coal slurry and water. The top of the decant structure was not strong enough to safely support the new fill and, because of the slurry and water, there was no way to reinforce the structure from the outside. The structure was reinforced frorn the inside by sliplining 73 m (240 ft) of 0.66 rn (26 in.) OD, 0.53 rn (21 in.) ID polyethylene pipe, grouting around this pipe with cellular concrete. and constructing a steel-fiber reinforced micro-silica concrete transition at the upslope end of the pipe. Rehabilition of the decant structure was completed in August 1989. The rehabilitated decant structure is now performing satisfactorily as fill is being placed over it for raising the dam.

Gold and silver often occur finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite. The use of biological leaching to dissolve pyrite and liberate gold has been extensively studied for a concentrate from the Porgera deposit, Papua New Guinea. The successful operation of a continuous bioleach circuit has been demonstrated. Bioleach residues were cyanide leached to extract gold and silver, and unreacted pyrite recovered for recycle to the bioleach. A 26 day steady state continuous bioleach test on a concentrate assaying 14.3 g/tonne Au and 87.0 g/tonne Ag produced residues with an average 73.5% weight loss and a pyrite oxidation of 88%. Cyanidation and recovery of pyrite from the cyanide residues for recycle gave overall recoveries of 92.1% gold and 74.6% silver. A proportion of the remaining precious metals was found in the bioleach solutions and may be recoverable. Losses to tails were 3.0% gold and 8.1% silver. Final tails represented 14.3% of the feed weight and averaged 1.84 g/tonne Au. A description of the continuous bioleach circuit and bioleach residue handling procedures, and the results of the study are presented. The features and advantages of biological oxidation as a pretreatment for refractory precious metal ores and concentrates are discussed.

Recent research has shown that froth flotation is not effective at treating fine coals (-28 mesh) containing a large portion of middling particles. Due to their relatively large density differences, middling particles can be separated more efficiently using gravity-based processes. The ability of gravity separators to treat fine particles has been limited by the lack of particle inertia relative to the surface drag forces. However, particle inertia can be enhanced by the application of a centrifugal field. A commercial-scale centrifugal Falcon concentrator capable of treating a mass flow rate of greater than 1 tph continuously has been used to evaluate its feasibility for treating fine coal as an alternative to froth flotation. Tests conducted on a -28 mesh fine coal circuit feed have found the Falcon concentrator to be very effective at cleaning the 28 x 325 mesh size fraction. For an Illinois No. 5 coal sample, the ash content was reduced in the 100 x 325 mesh size fraction from about 18% to 8% while achieving a high combustible recovery value of nearly 97%. In addition, the total sulfur content was substantially decreased from 2.6% to 1.7%. The effects of the critical operating parameters on separation performance have been studied and their values optimized.

Mill length was the primary variable investigated in an autogenous pilot mill circuit. The 5-1/2' diameter mill had both pebble ports and 1/2" wide slotted grates. The plus 1/2" mill product was crushed in a cone crusher and returned to the mill feed along with the minus 1/2" plus 4 or 6 mesh fraction. Tests were run with a short mill, inside length of 26-3/8", or diameter-to-length ratio of 2.50 to 1. The same mill was then lengthened to 48-3/8", diameter-to-length ratio of 1.36 to 1. The effect of mill length on circuit product characteristics was studied. Results show that (1) circuit throughput or grinding rate is lower per foot of mill length in the longer mill, (2) the long mill product is finer than the short mill product, and (3) KWH per ton of circuit product is slightly higher with the longer mill; however, KWH per ton of minus 200 mesh material (finer fraction) produced is essentially the same in the long mill as the short mill, It is not known whether the relationships found for the pilot mill are valid for commercial size mills.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize some of the author's experiences in applying population balance models to a variety of industrial grinding circuits. Over 26 separate industrial circuits have been studied in detail during the last 10 years, each unique in its equipment type and layout as well as in the material (s) being ground. The success of the population balance approach during these studies was variable. Fourteen of the circuits were shown to be very amenable to such an approach while the remainder had conditions present that sufficiently violated the standard population balance assumptions so that the analysis was of less than optimal utility. Some discussion of the importance of standard population balance assumptions will be given. It is increasingly becoming this author's opinion that the use of population balance models has its greatest utility in defining logically and cheaply (in contrast to actual physical testing), the relative limits and comparisons of different proposed circuit configurations and changes in equipment types and/or operating conditions. As far as specific quantitative predictions and actual optimization of existing plant performance, the results of applying the population balance approach have been often disappointing and need to be coupled at the plant level with other engineering quantification techniques in order to achieve desired improvements.

Platinum-group metal (PGM) converter matte from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to chemical and biological leaching in an effort to upgrade the matte by decreasing the Cu and Ni content. Copper and NL extractions were optimized in a two-stage chemical leach. Atmospheric pressure sulfuric acid leaching removed over 90 pct of the Ni and Fe in the first stage, while 95 to 98 pct of the Cu was removed is the second stage using an acidified cupric chloride leach. This two-stage leach, followed by an elemental sulfur removal step, decreased the weight of the matte by 90 pct. The combined Cu and Ni content was reduced from 65 pct to less than 20 pct, while the PGM content was increased from less than 2 pct to 26 pct. Biological oxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans also proved to be an effective method for removing Cu and Ni. Over 90 pct of the sulfide was oxidized and 99 pct of the Cu and Ni were solubilized, leading to a 60 pct reduction of sample mass during the 17 week bio-oxidation of the Stillwater converter matte. The final residue, after removal of jarosite that accumulated during bio-oxidation, contained less than 3 pct combined Cu and Ni and 6 pct MM.

I welcome this opportunity to speak before the Coal Division of the AIME in such an attractive setting as the Pacific Northwest. With the development of the Centralia project, the Pacific Northwest will have its first major coal-fired thermal electric generating plant. This State has a long history of coal mining that diminished with the passage of coal-fired steamships and locomotives but is now reviving with the growth of electrical power demand. Because this 1,400 row plant is to be supplied with surface-mined coal, it is particularly appropriate that this area be the setting for a talk on factors influencing the growth of surface coal mining in the West. During the course of my talk, I will touch on a number of factors including electric power demand, coal resources, production trends, environmental considerations and trends in State and Federal activities that I feel will influence surface coal mining in the West. Total electric power consumption by the year 2000 is expected to reach 9.4 trillion kilowatt-hours. Predictions of total coal consumption for electric power generation by that year range from a low of 845 million tons to a high of 1,520 million tons, or 2.6 to 4.7 times the amount used for this purpose in 1970.

Over it’s more than 100-year history, the Kennecott operation has often been at the forefront of innovation; driven by the demands of the lower grade ore-body and the higher costs of operating in the US where wages are generally higher and regulation more restrictive. One way of reducing operating costs in c/lb is to increase the lbs produced at minimal cost. Despite the relatively coarse grind at Kennecott - about 30% >150μm, approximately 20% of the Cu lost to tail is liberated chalcopyrite in the <20μm fraction, and about 30%-40% in the <37μm fraction. In 2020 Kennecott undertook a detailed plant scale test of the magnetic aggregation technology to increase copper recovery by reducing fine copper losses. A paired statistical plant test of magnetic conditioning on one rougher line showed a 1.12% increase in Cu recovery to 97% statistical confidence. The next challenge, unforeseen at the start of the project, was the fabrication and transportation to site of the equipment for the three remaining rougher rows, during the severe supply-chain constraints of the Covid pandemic in 2021. This resulted in delays and unforeseen costs as world-wide transportation became chaotic, particularly transportation via west coast USA. Nevertheless, the project was completed and commissioned, with only minor delays and cost increases, due to a flexible approach to overcoming the hurdles encountered.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit&apos;s development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts&apos; occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach&apos;s main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. Basically, the actually existed correlation between spheres. grounding the model of sustainable development - economic, environmental and social- is given in a form of nomogram under Fig.1. While studying the index of public economic welfare, environmental conditions corresponding level in its original state i.e. prior to any industrial work carried in the region, was adopted as its top possible conventional rating (1.0). The given nomogram displays the integrity of x-f(y) type interrelations plotted on the basis of four separate dependencies, precisely a) the size (area) of infringed earth&apos;s surface as a function of coal output in the region; b) subordination of ecological comfort of people&apos;s living to the degree of lands infringement; c) interconnection of economic and environmental components of people living; d) interconnection of economic level of people&apos;s living and the amount of coal mined in the region. Linked to a single unit, these separate plain dependencies create, as seen from the graph, a more intricate system of bonds, that affords during defining or changing this or that system parameter to secure undergoing changes, that occur to other parameters of the system. The mentioned reason made it possible to consider and drive to mutual conformity ( as far as it is possible) all parameters values for the defined system&apos;s relations, that in their turn indicate the concern of other aspects of a sustainable development principal.
