The mathematical framework of a well-established model proposed earlier by the authors for the screening process is briefly recalled. Some numerical methods for the application of the model, concerning numerical solution of the equations and parameter estimation, are indicated. Some applications of the model to improve screening operations, sizing of screen, simulation of screening and of integrated plant operations are discussed, and the computer software to be used for these purposes is described in detail.

This paper deals with the development of backfilling methods and systems at the Broken Hill orebody of Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited, at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province. Production started in 1979, being confined to large diameter blasthole stoping methods in the upper, steeply dipping areas of the orebody. This blasthole reserve is now depleted and the production tonnage, 100000 tons per month, is produced from eight cut and fill stopes in the flatter dipping areas of the orebody. The fill methods of the blasthole stoping area evolved prior to the pillar extraction are briefly discussed together with the resulting experiences gained that enabled virtually 100% extraction to be achieved. The original cut and fill mining used costly hydraulic cemented fill; this was replaced partly by unconsolidated river sand and later by dune sand which occurs in abundance. The paper describes the planning, research work and commissioning of a cycloning plant that now enables dune sand to be used successfully as an unconsolidated hydraulic fill. The development of drainage, placement and control methods are also reviewed.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa advocates the importance of sustainable economic development and justifiable environmental consciousness by business. The government needs to ensure that every citizen of the Republic has access to an environment that is protected, pollution free, and sustainable by enacting certain regulations. However, there are more than 5 700 derelict and unrehabilitated mines of all types in South Africa. Former asbestos operations were among the first to be targeted for clean-up under the programme instituted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), owing to the proven direct impact of asbestos pollution on health. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges faced by the coal sector as far as mine rehabilitation and closure is concerned. For the purpose of this paper rehabilitation is defined as per the Chamber of Mines Rehabilitation Guidelines publication, which defines rehabilitation as putting the land impacted by mining activities back to a sustainable and usable condition. Some of the current rehabilitation challenges are technical skills (know-how), leadership focus, poor planning, cost saving initiatives, and the government's lack of capacity to enforcement rehabilitation requirements. It is imperative that mining companies identify rehabilitation as a critical strategic pillar that directly influences license to operate. The case study evidence indicates that relevant policies, appointment of accountable people, sufficient leadership support, and the correct choice of rehabilitation equipment can assist to improve the rehabilitation and land management challenge.

In South Africa, the Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are unique in that they are the largest platinum group metal deposits in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. Crush pillars are commonly used in this role, where the residual pillar strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the direct measurement of stress within these crush pillars, and describes the stress?strain behaviour of these pillars. These findings indicate that the measured pillar failure stress is too high. The implications of these findings are that roof damage and pillar bursting could occur, and some examples of this type of damage are shown. The paper concludes that this problem could be mitigated if the three dimensional pillar geometry were modified and the pillars were cut smaller.

"Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a fast-emerging, in situ mining technology that provides access to low-cost energy through the utilization of coal reserves that are currently not technically or economically exploitable by conventional mining methods.Groundwater monitoring for conventional coal mining in South Africa is well established, with SANS, ASTM, and ISO standards for the specific environment, location, and purposes. South Africa’s groundwater is a critical resource that provides environmental benefits and contributes to the well-being of the citizens and economic growth. Groundwater supplies the drinking water needs of large portions of the population, and in some rural areas it represents the only source of water for domestic use. Implementation of, and adherence to, groundwater monitoring standards are thus non-negotiable.The groundwater quality management mission, according to the Department of Water and Sanitation in South Africa, is set in the context of the water resources mission and reads as follows:‘To manage groundwater quality in an integrated and sustainable manner within the context of the NationalWater Resource Strategy and thereby to provide anadequate level of protection to groundwater resources and secure the supply of water of acceptable quality.’ (SABS, 2016).In this paper we propose fit-for-purpose groundwater monitoring standards for a commercial UCG operation. It is important to proactively prevent or minimize potential impacts on groundwater through long-term protection and monitoring plans. Scope of study / standard proposal The purpose of this paper is to set out a National Standard Proposal to emphasize groundwater monitoring as one of the five strategies of the ‘Policy and Strategy for Groundwater Quality Management in South Africa’ (Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, 2000) and to align it with the National Water Act, Act no. 36 of 1998 (Republic of South Africa, 1998).The focus of this standard is directed solely towards groundwater monitoring during underground coal gasification (UCG). Groundwater in this context refers to water as sampled from dedicated monitoring wells around the targeted site, which will include the shallow aquifer referred to as groundwater, and water flow at the level of the underground gasifier, referred to as ‘coal water’."

The minerals industry is committed to the principles of sustain-ability. Reducing water consumption is a priority area, especially for regions of water scarcity. This paper presents a systemic optimization of the water balance of the Skorpion Zinc refinery with the aim of reducing water consumption. An Aspen Plus simulation of the process is used. The validity of the simulation is tested by measuring key output variables and comparing results to plant data. A number of water minimization scenarios are investigated, Including unit operation and circuit configuration changes. The scenarios leading to the largest reduction in water consumption are through the full recycle of treated effluent water, which results in water savings of up to 19%. Reducing process water and/or recycling of untreated water is prohibited by the build-up of trace elements, which affect product purity. The Skorpion process already features a highly optimized water balance, with unit operational changes merely resulting in a shift in the water balance. Consequently, the largest area for improvement is through the re-use of effluent water. Keywords Skorpion zinc water usage, process optimization, sustainability.

The extraction of Cu(II) from HCl media using Cyanex 923 in kerosene was investigated. The effect of shaking time, aqueous phase acid concentration, extractant concentration, chloride ion concentration, various metal ions (Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+), and temperature on the extraction were studied. Using 0.1 M Cyanex 923 the extraction of Cu(II) was 6.7 per cent from 3 M HCl, which increased up to 78.5 per cent with 6.5 M HCl and then decreased due to acid extraction by the extractant. The maximum extraction (97.5 per cent) was obtained with 1 M Cyanex 923 from 5 M HCl solution. A mathematical model has been developed to describe solvent extraction equllibria over wide ranges of concentration of extractant, acid, and chloride ions. The composition of the extracted species has been predicted on the basis of slope analysis results and extraction equilibrium modelling. The negative values of enthalpy change and entropy change confirm the exothermic formation of the extracted complex.

"The behaviour of rocks depends on their material properties, and therefore it is important that these properties are determined by relevant and reliable laboratory testing methods. The ISRM Suggested Methods are very important documents in this regard, and a draft suggested method exists for the determination of the ’complete stress-strain curve for intact rock in uniaxial compression’. The method specifies the required geometry of specimens and the required testing procedures. The research described in this paper involved the determination of complete stress-strain curves for two materials, one exhibiting the Class I characteristic, and the other the Class II characteristic. To obtain a better understanding of the deformation behaviours in the post-peak region, tests were carried out on specimens of both material types with different length-to-diameter ratios. The results showed that the geometries of the test specimens influence the stressstrain curves in the post-peak region. The implication is, therefore, that the numerical values obtained for the slopes of the post-peak graphs are not material constants, but are geometry-dependent. Explanations for this behaviour are given. These findings have important implications regarding the use of post-peak data, for example for blast fragmentation considerations, and for evaluation of rockbursting potential. The research findings are based on a limited amount of laboratory testing, and should be confirmed by further testing. IntroductionThe most common approach for studying the behaviour of rock is by compression testing of cylindrical specimens in the laboratory. Rocks respond to forces by deforming and eventually breaking. The strength and the deformation characteristics are derived from the stressstrain curves produced. Standard shapes and sizes for the test specimens and standard loading rates are recommended in the Suggested Methods of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. In spite of these standards, there remain certain aspects of testing which require further attention. The research described in this paper deals with deformation and failure behaviour of rock materials using stiff, servocontrolled testing equipment. The particular objective was to test the premise that the behaviour of cylindrical rock specimens in the post-peak region of the stress-strain curves does not reflect only a material characteristic, but is influenced by the height-to-diameter ratio (the geometry) of the rock specimen. An additional objective was to investigate the effect of the stiffness of the test equipment on the outcomes of tests."

A method, based on the macroscopic population balance equation allowing the dynamic simulation of a multistage adsorption plant given an arbitrary rate expression, is described. The partial differential equations resulting from this method are simplified using the method of characteristics. The simplified equations can then be solved using standard ODE integration techniques. The procedure is illustrated by means of data typical of a CIP application. Requirements for data structures which allow the incorporation of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) model (and other unit models) into a general metallurgical simulator are described. Based on these considerations, it is concluded that more generality in the description of distributed quantities such as loading and particle size is provided by the use of mass density at fixed class boundaries, rather than discrete masses within fixed classes as has hitherto been used by ore-dressing simulators.

At ISCOR the quantitative determination of the structural properties of coke is done with a Leitz-TAS Image Analysis System. A reflected light microscopic image of a coke sample is converted into a binary image and stored in computer memory or on hard disc. By means of mathematical and stereological techniques the system can transform the images electronically. A lightpen can be used to determine the sequence of these operations. TASIC, which is based on BASIC language, is used as the program language on the computer. The majority of the programs are written by the user to ensure satisfactory results for specific studies. The computer controls the whole system, including the movement of the microscope stage, focusing, transformation and measurement of the image and data processing. The computer is also applied for establishing statistical correlations between the structural and other coke and coal parameters as well as for graphics and predictions of the coke structure. Factors affecting the structural properties of coke are discussed and conclusions are drawn.

The use of testwork to establish an economically feasible separating plant has been a long established practice in the mineral processing industry. However, uncertainties in orebody characteristics and equipment/plant operation can have a significant impact on the separation performance of a given project. This paper explores the impact of uncertainties derived during testwork at key processing stages on the overall performance of mineral processing flowsheets. Case studies for both mineral sand and iron ore projects will be used to illustrate the concepts studied in this paper.

In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. A novel mathematical model is presented which describes the behaviour of beds of particles, of uniform size and shape but different densities, during autogenous separations. The approach used in the formulation of the dispersion model is a phenomenological one based on a statistical view, which leads to a diffusion-like representation of the autogenous-separation process. Although the model currently considers only density-related phenomena, it accounts quantitatively not only for the density-segregation aspects of the process but for the interactions between the particles. Quantitative predictions of the dispersion model are compared with the results obtained in tests using a specially constructed experimental batch jig, and it is shown that the model provides an adequate quantitative description of the process for particles of uniform size and shape. It is pointed out that, for the description of more complicated autogenous separations, a more rigorous formulation of the particle drag and density-segregation terms will have to be incorporated into the dispersion model. Nonetheless it is concluded that the model as presented in this paper provides not only a novel insight into the mechanisms of autogenous separations but a means by which to analyse similar systems.

Acid heap leaching has been extensively applied to the processing of copper oxide ores, with recovery of copper by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Heap leaching has also been extended to the treatment of secondary sulphide copper ores, where oxidative conditions are generated in aerated heaps by the bacterially-assisted oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron. The treatment of low-grade chalcopyrite ores has recently been the focus of research, with Mintek playing a prominent role. When processing chalcopyrite ores, more complex column test work is performed, which incorporates the prediction and simulation of temperature behaviour in pyrite-containing heaps. Mintek has devised a trade-marked column leaching apparatus (SmartColumn?) for the simulation of the natural temperature profile development in pyrite-containing heaps. As heap leach applications are becoming more complex, the parameters that need to be built into the design and operation of heap leach plants are growing in number, and the amount of data to be collected and processed, and the number of decisions to be taken daily, are also increasing. Mintek has therefore developed the HeapStar® administrative advisory software, as a guidance system to ensure that the correct protocols are implemented at various stages of the leach cycle.

In the chloride process for TiO2 pigment production, various titania feedstocks (i.e. rutile, synthetic rutile, slag, and upgraded titania slag (UGS)) are chlorinated in a fluidized bed reactor with petroleum coke at temperatures between 1000°C and 1100ºC to yield gaseous metal chlorides. Although feedstock preference is largely based on TiO2 content, feedstock physical properties (i.e. density, sphericity, size distribution, and porosity) differ; these differences will affect fluidization behaviour and can inadvertently affect conversion efficiency. For example, a high carryover from the reactor reduces particle residence time and decreases conversion rates. Owing to dwindling rutile reserves in the world, most chloride producers are forced to feed blends of feedstocks to their chlorinators; and so it becomes important to understand whether blends have an effect on the hydrodynamic properties of the bed. This paper describes the physical characterization of different feeds and the determination of the elutriation constants for slag, rutile, synthetic rutile, and a blend (i.e. 50 wt% rutile, 50 wt% slag).A common feature of the tests was that particles finer than 75 µm tended more than any other size to be elutriated. The tested rutile, classified as a Geldart Group B material, had the lowest carryover, whereas the slags had the highest. Interestingly, the elutriation constant ([ki]) of the blend is lower than those of either of its individual components.

AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

"This article presents laboratory test work conducted on an African haematite ore to determine the influence of the flotation pulp pH on the final iron grade and recovery. Results show that a combination of an isodecyl ether propylene amine/amino acetate and 1,3-propanediamine, N-(3-(C10-C16-alkyloxy)propyl)-derivatives collector is suitable for separating haematite from quartz. Higher iron grades were obtained at pH levels between neutral and pH 9. This underlines the importance of the surface charge effect of the ore on its flotation characteristics. The results serve as good baseline conditions for further optimization. IntroductionBeneficiation of iron ore by flotation is widely used in Brazil, India and China. In Africa, however, this practice is not yet commercially developed.The aim of this test work is to serve as a starting point by establishing suitable pH conditions for the development of a practically implementable reagent suite, which will then be included in a larger beneficiation circuit for producing high-grade iron ore sinter feed.In the literature, African iron ore types are graded as low-grade (60.0–62.9% Fe; 8.6– 12.5% SiO2 and insolubles), high-grade (66.0– 69.9% Fe; 0.8–4.5% SiO2 and insolubles), and meduim-grade as the remaining portion (Astrup et al., 1998). The low-grade ore used in this work contains less than 60% Fe.For Brazilian ores consisting of a combination of haematite and quartz, it is common to use corn starch as a depressant and ether amine blends as collectors with additional frothing characteristic (Araujo et al., 2005). Work by Turrer and Peres (2010) shows the possibility of using other depressants successfully as well.The main mechanism of the reverse flotation of quartz from iron ore is based on the electrostatic theory of flotation. This is due to the strong pH dependence of the zeta potential of the mineral edge planes on silicate particles (Fuerstenau and Pradip. 2005)."

The project report is based on vacation work done by the writer at the Khutala Colliery during December/January 2009?2010. The purpose of this report is to explain and describe the design process in a multi-seam mine design for coal extraction at the Khutala Colliery. The multi-seam design will focus on the No. 2 and No. 4 seams as these are the seams that are currently being mined by underground methods at Khutala Colliery. The seam thicknesses and the parting thickness between the seams provide suitable conditions for designing a multi-seam mine design. An investigation into the pillar design aspects is carried out followed by a numerical modelling analysis of various scenarios. This analysis validates the first principles approach provided by multi-seam design guidelines. The design results from the analysis of the selected pillar design indicate sufficient parting for primitive conditions between seams, thus illuminating the need for superimposing in-panel pillars. This multi-seam mine design confirms the potential for the extraction of coal in a new panel. The design indicates that significant amounts of power station coal are present and suitable for extraction by room and pillar mining methods. The panel block indicates 401 625 tonnes of ROM coal. This block has a life of panel that will be mined just over a 4-month period. This 4-month period is assumed to mined at a production rate of 48 000 tonnes per month. The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women's employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

The last seven hot rolling passes of the ferritic stainless steel AISI430 were simulated on a Gleeble-1500D® thermo-mechanical simulator to investigate the effect of temperature, strain rate, and interpass time on the texture. The compression tests were carried out over a wide range of strain rates (0.1 s-1 to 5 s-1) and temperatures (1100°C to 820°C) with different interpass times (2, 10, 20, and 30 seconds). The dynamic recrystallization to dynamic recovery transition temperature was determined from examining the relationship between the mean flow stress and the inverse of the deformation temperature in multi-pass tests. It was found that the texture in the central layer of the compressed sample is a strong recrystallization-type. The through-thickness textural and microstructural banding, to a large extent, were found to be weakened by hot deformation in the two-phase (a+ ?) region, as opposed to the single-phase (a) region.
