AK6 is a Cretaceous aged kimberlite located in the north-east of Botswana, close to Debswana's Drapa and Letlhakane Mines. It was discovered by Debswana in 1969, but was considered unattractive from an economic perspective. In 2003, Debot Prospecting Pty Ltd ('Debot') re-assessed the area and with the advent of new prospecting technology, particularly large diameter drilling ('LDD') and more detailed ground geophysical surveys found AK6 to be of interest. In 2005, the Boteti joint venture was formed between Debot and African Diamonds plc ('AFD'), which covered a number of Prospecting Licenses, including that which contained AK6.

"A mathematical simulation model has been devised to guide the layout of surface or underground mine workings, drill stations, and drill holes that are established in order to search for tabular ore bodies. The ore bodies may be contained within veins, sedimentary beds (including reefs), or other tabular structures.Programmed for a time-shared digital computer, the model contains both stochastic and deterministic variables. Stochastic or natural variables include the number of ore shoots and their sizes, orientations, locations and values. Deterministic or controllable variables include (i) locations and costs of workings (for underground exploration); (ii) drill station locations and costs; and (iii) drill hole azimuths, inclinations, lengths and deflections (if any).For various assumptions about the natural variables, the model is run while the controllable variables arc changed deliberately. Thus, layouts are devised to determine the percentages of the total number of assumed ore shoots found at different costs. In order to choose among the various layouts, cost-effectiveness measures are calculated."

Due to grade estimation uncertainty, two statistical errors can occur. The Type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, despite the true value being below the break-even grade. This material is dilution. The Type II error is where the material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, although the true grade is actually above the break-even grade. This material is not mined and is lost. The uncertainty was assumed to follow a normal distribution in a previous study. For this study, estimated block values are compared to those determined after mining (the best estimate of the true grade). This actual data from four mines shows that the uncertainty follows a Laplace. There is no single solution regarding adjusting the cut-off grade away from the break-even grade, considering estimation uncertainty, that could be applied to all gold mines. However, adjusting the cut-off grade downwards (up to 22% for one mine) is noted when optimizing the profit considering grade uncertainties. This type of adjustment could open up significant mining areas and extend the life of the mine.

Iron ore pellets experience degradation during handling due low energy impacts and stresses. These impacts lead to volume or surface breakage of the pellets, creating fine particles that accumulate along the process. Some of the particles are in contact with the air and are dragged as dust into the workplace or into the atmosphere. The aerodynamic size of the particles allows them to be potentially inhaled by the workers or to be carried to nearby communities. Dust emission becomes critical at specific locations, such as transfer chutes and stockpiles. This work models the dust generation that occurs in an iron ore pellet stockyard using a methodology that combines experiments to quantify the degradation of the pellets to mathematical modelling of the dust emission mechanisms in the stockyard. First, laboratory tests were used to characterise the amount of mass and the particle size distribution of the dust generated by degradation under controlled conditions. Second, the flow over a stockpile of an iron ore pellet company was simulated with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Third, semiempirical equations linked the data generated by simulations and laboratory tests to estimate the dust emission in the stockyard. Finally, results were validated with measured field data, obtained with a novel online measurement tool. Results suggest that the approach is able to predict dust emission with sufficient accuracy and can be used for further implementation in the management of operations and decision making in order to reduce the environmental impact of the process. "The start of mining operations often raises serious financial problems. In marginal cases promoters frequently demand financial aid from governments.In the past, the financial assistance has taken the form of gifts, procurement contracts, etc., but aid in such form has been severely criticized. A new formula has been developed to provide a more equitable distribution of the revenues accruing to the government and to private capital.The benefits to these two parties have been evaluated in an hypothetical case and compared in terms of internal rates of return on their investment, their shares of the undiscounted cash flows and their primary profits.The method based on the non-zero sum game theory provides a means for suggesting the lowest feasible annual production and the optimal sum contributed by the government in the form of outright gift, equity capital and convertible bonds. Other financial hypotheses can also be optimized by the computerized analysis."

"Potential metal supply refers to metals to be produced from as yet unknown deposits. Naturally, to measure potential supply requires, among other things, inference to the number of deposits, their tonnage, and their grade Thus, probability distributions were constructed for each 400-square mile cell in Northern Sonora, Mexico. A computer system was developed that simulated the occurrence of deposits for each cell, exploration for the deposits, and their exploitation. Evaluation was performed for each deposit by discounted cash flow analysis.An objective of this study was to explore the effect of the transportation network and required road or railroad construction upon potential supply. Consequently, the evaluation system was designed to consider the spatial location of a simulated deposit to the existing transportation network and the market destination. The construction of linkages to connect the deposit to existing transportation arteries as well as the carrying of the concentrates to the intended market were simulated. in terms of cost. The selection of the path took into account the existing terrain. This was done by digitizing topographical maps and representing the topography of the area by an orthogonal grid of elevations. The optimum route was selected by dynamic programming, meeting a prescribed gradient constraint. The potential supply of each cell was determined, allowing for the infrastructure effect."

"Fatigue is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is a causal or contributing factor in many incidents and accidents. Fatigue can be caused by work- and non-work-related factors. There is a lack of information about associations between demographic and other non-work factors, and fatigue. This study aimed to assess associations between demographic, work, living, and socioeconomic conditions, and lifestyle characteristics, and fatigue at a platinum smelter in South Africa. Eight interviews with management and two focus groups with production workers were conducted, and 75 questionnaires were completed by production and other workers. Both work- and non-work-related factors were considered to be causes of fatigue. These factors included overtime, shift work, high workloads, activities performed outside of work, age, race, housing tenure, diet, sleep disorders, stress, and job satisfaction. In general, higher levels of fatigue were reported by younger participants, those who rented accommodation, ate less healthily, had a sleep disorder, and those with high levels of stress and low job satisfaction. As various demographic, lifestyle, and wellness-related factors were associated with fatigue, both work and non-work contributors should be addressed in fatigue management plans. BackgroundFatigue may be defined as ‘a state of impaired mental and/or physical performance and lowered alertness arising as a result of, or a combination of, hard physical and mental work, health and psychosocial factors or inadequate restorative sleep’ (BHP Billiton, 2005). Williamson et al. (2011) define fatigue as a biological drive for recuperative rest. Sleepiness and fatigue are related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, sleepiness, more specifically, can be defined as sleep propensity, or a person’s tendency to fall asleep (Hossain et al., 2003; Shen, Barbera, and Shapiro, 2006).Increasing levels of fatigue and sleepiness are associated with lapses in attention, errors, response slowing, fluctuations in alertness and effort, and impaired attention, working memory, long-term memory, decision-making, and creativity (Alhola and Polo-Kantola, 2007; van Dongen and Dinges, 2000). Fatigue is also associated with adverse effects on mood and impulsive behaviours (Alhola and Polo- Kantola, 2007; Minkel et al., 2011; Schwarz et al., 2013). It is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is commonly identified as a causal or contributing factor in many accidents and injuries (Schutte, 2009). Fatigue can also lead to long-term health problems, including digestive problems, heart disease, stress, and mental illness (Shaw, 2003)."

In this study we explore the use of a novel numerical modelling approach to study the effect of pillar reinforcement on pillar stability. Case studies in the literature indicate that tendons, strapping of the pillars, and shotcrete or thin spray-on liners are commonly used to reinforce pillars. No clear methodology exists to select the type of support or to design the capacity of the support required, however. This has led to ongoing collapses in some mines in spite of heavy support being used to reinforce unstable pillars. A limit equilibrium model with confinement on the edge of the pillar was used to simulate the interaction of the support with the failing pillar. The model correctly predicts that an increase in confinement will lead to a decrease in the extent of pillar failure. As the displacement discontinuity boundary element method allows for the efficient solution of largescale bord-and-pillar layouts, the effect of pillar confinement can now be studied on a mine-wide scale. Accurate calibration of the limit equilibrium model is, however, required before this method can be used for the design of effective pillar support.

"Tapping operations at ferroalloy smelters generate a significant amount of fume. Effective capture of fumes is required to meet the obligations of environmental, as well as occupational, legislation.A study was completed on an existing fume extraction system at a ferromanganese furnace tapping area. The area under consideration included the tap-hole, launder, and ladle area. The study consisted of site test work as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to identify and evaluate solutions.Site test work and observations during furnace operation provided a baseline of system performance as well as input parameters for CFD modelling. Gas flow rates and energy contents from each extraction area were measured. Photographs and video footage were taken to evaluate areas of fume leakage.The CFD study was firstly validated against site observations to ensure the accuracy of input parameters. Thereafter several modification concepts were modelled and suitable combinations were investigated to ensure robust solutions. The following concepts were considered:•,Air curtains•,Ladle hood aspect ratio and position•,Increase of ladle extraction volume•,Extension of the length of the tapping garage structureThe paper presents the results of a performance test on a working ferromanganese tapping area fume extraction system and the results of CFD modelling as compared to site test results. "The aim of the audit was to determine whether the mining project environmental impact assessments (EIAs) in Kenya are undertaken according to international best practice. A sample of 50 EIA reports for the 2007–2016 period was evaluated using 18 criteria in the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) guidelines. The findings showed that only two criteria were considered ‘excellent’ according to the ELAW guidelines, namely baseline environmental assessment and prediction of physical impacts. Six criteria were found to be ‘satisfactory’, including prediction of social impacts, analysis of alternative options, and impact mitigation. The reports were quite weak in terms of: consideration of all phases in the mining cycle, environmental regulatory framework, prediction of biological impacts, stakeholder consultation and engagement, integration of human right issues, and integration of climate change and cost-benefit analysis. It is therefore recommended that the Kenyan National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) should consider tightening the EIA terms and conditions in the approval of statutory terms of reference (ToR) for full-scale mining EIAs to ensure improved performance of EIA as a tool for environmental protection. IntroductionThe nexus between society and the environment has continued to generate interest because the environment is the source of goods and services that sustain the various needs of human beings as outlined in the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) (Armstrong and Peart, 2000; Sutton 2004; Chakrabarti 2007; Strange and Bayley 2008). All the five generic categories of societal needs, namely physiological needs (food, water, clothing, medicines, etc.), residential and occupational needs (shelter, transport, energy, etc.), economic needs (tradeable goods and services), leisure and recreational needs (tourism), and cultural and spiritual needs (e.g. sacred resources and ecosystems) (Mwaura et al. 2016) are addressed by the environment. Consequently, a wide range of development sectors have been established around the world in order to address the above needs (Lederer, Galtung, and Antal, 1980; Rammelsberg et al., 2006; Noonan, 2014). All these development sectors rely entirely on the environment for their proper functioning, as shown in Table I."

"There are numerous factors that affect open stope stability and often result in falls of ground. These falls of ground can be attributed to factors such as beam failure due to a larger than normal roof area (hydraulic radius too large), adverse ground conditions, seismicity, the stress-strain environment, absence of support, and poor drill-and-blast practices. The effect of time on the stability of open stopes is sometimes underestimated and is relatively unknown, especially on Target Mine. Actual data was collected from open stopes at Target and analysed to show the effect of time on open stope stability. The benefits of this analysis will include improved understanding of time-dependent failure, which can assist in reducing dilution and the risk of sterilization of future mining blocks. IntroductionTarget Mine is situated adjacent to the town of Allanridge, some 20 km from Welkom in South Africa’s Free State Province, and is the most northerly mine in the Welkom Goldfields area (Figure 1). The mine consists of a single surface shaft system with a sub-shaft (Target 1C shaft) and a decline. Ownership was attained by Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited in May 2004 (Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, 2010). Before discussing the selection of open stopes for the back-analyses, a brief explanation of open stoping as practiced at Target Mine will be given. The orebody is some 180 m in thickness and 270 m wide and comprises multiple reefs overlying one another. The 180 m thick reef package is termed the Eldorado Reefs, as shown in Figure 2. The Eldorado Reefs suboutcrop against the Dreyerskuil Reefs, as shown in Figure 3. The dip of the reef varies from as low as 10° in the west to 75° in the east.Compared with most Australian and Canadian open stoping mining operations, Target Mine is unique. In most Australian and Canadian mining operations the hangingwall and footwall of the open stopes comprise waste rock, and the orebody dips relatively steeply. Due to the depth of Target Mine, some 2300 m to 2500 m below surface, a destress slot (Figure 4) is mined to create an artificial, shallow mining environment whereby the field stress is managed and kept at values of around 60 MPa. The destress slot comprises a narrow tabular stope with an average width of 1.5 m, and is mined on the Dreyerskuil Reefs.At Target Mine the hangingwall, sidewalls, and footwall of the open stopes all comprise reef of different grades, except for the EA1, where the EB footwall is waste rock. If a stope, for example, is mined alongside an existing old stope, the western sidewall of this stope will consist of backfill. The general mining direction of open stopes is from the lowest position of the reef on the west, progressing up towards the east as shown in Figure 5."

The study was intent on assessing the socio-economic impact of a zinc mine in South Africa through the application of people-centric digital tools using a case study research methodology. The global mining industry is undergoing significant technological shifts to modernize, improve operational sustainability, and align with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda. While the case study mine is a more modernized mine, continuous improvement around the ‘social’ pillar becomes critical, and to this end application of people-centered digital tools presented as the vehicle to understand community needs and impacts. Despite considerable annual corporate social investment by mines annually, the overall impact or social return on investment is marginally understood. Towards contributing to addressing this gap, digital ESG ‘social-related’ data gathering tools for mines decision-making were developed, including the training-needs assessment tool, community-social needs assessment, small, micro, and medium enterprise (SMME) communications and engagement tool, digital leadership competencies gap assessment tool, and change management blueprint, which further allowed for customization to the mining context. Hence, the novelty of this paper relates to applying digital tools to provide real-time information of the needs of a community, both socially and economically. The findings suggested that these digital tools enabled gathering of information for the establishment of regional and operational baselines towards enabling of social investment returns in relation to socio-economic transformation development interventions. These tools have been applied to a zinc mine context, with lessons and experiences obtained through this study, invaluable to the application of these digital tool in other mines in South Africa. The study was conducted in September 2023 across five host communities, surrounding the zinc mine, in the Northern Cape region, with 120 participants involved in the application of three relevant community-related digital tools, which included the training needs, community-social needs, and SMME communications and engagement tools. It was evident that the digital ESG tools could be used for data gathering for the mine’s informed decision-making and allowed for securing of insights on community needs in near real-time, and further proved practical for community use.

In the field of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts, cobalt, platinum, and aluminium are the primary metal constituents of the conventionally used cobalt catalyst. While platinum recovery remains a focal point in this field, a recent endeavour by a South African company emerged, which aimed to recover cobalt and aluminium from spent Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts for potential use in the agricultural sector. This study aimed to optimally separate cobalt and aluminium from spent Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalyst for this purpose. It further leverages the OLI database to predict metal speciation during solvent extraction to aid with experimental planning. Shake-out tests were conducted to determine optimal separation. conditions, which were validated using three distinct methods: (i) evaluating the experimental error, (ii) comparing results with similar research, and (iii) validating results against the OLI database. The investigation revealed the pivotal role of the aqueous pH yielding effective separation at pH 3.13 ([H2SO4] = 2.5 × 10−4 M) when using 20 vol.% CYANEX 272 and 50 mol.% pre-neutralisation. Effective cobalt scrubbing was achieved with 50 g/L Al at pH 2.8, while successful stripping required 1 M H2SO4. Competitive interactions between complexing aluminium and cobalt species were observed when contacting with CYANEX 272 at a pH < 4. Equipment design analysis for a targeted separation efficiency of 87% dictated the necessity of two mixer stages and a settler measuring 1.5 m × 1.5 m × 6.0 m (height × width × length). This settler would ensure sufficient residence time for gravity separation at a flow rate of 10 m3/h.

Mixed fatty acids, such as oxidised paraffin soap, are frequently used as a substitute for oleic acid in flotation of scheelite in China. Not only because it is cheaper than oleic acid, but also because it is superior in flotation performance to oleic acid. This superiority is generally attributed to the mixed fatty acids' synergistic effect. In this paper, the synergistic effect of oxidised paraffin soap was investigated. We found it mainly consists of a series of saturated fatty acid salts, with six to nineteen carbon atoms. All the contained fatty acids were classified into four groups based on their chain length to make the research work practical. Also, the groups were labelled as 1, 2, 3, and 4 in order. The research was simplified into studying the synergistic effect of four equivalent collectors, instead of fourteen fatty acids. It is justified by the fact that neighbouring fatty acids are expected to have a similar flotation performance. The synergistic effect of the four groups of fatty acids was studied by single-mineral flotation with single groups, binary mixtures, ternary mixtures, and the full component, as collector respectively. The flotation performance index and synergy value were introduced to evaluate flotation performance and synergistic effect of groups, respectively. The results show that the mixture 1+2+3 has the strongest synergy of all followed by the mixtures 1+3 and 2+3. The mixture 3+4 and 1+2, on the other hand, have negative synergy. The synergistic effect of mixtures of groups indicate that being consecutive in length and a broad range of lengths are vital for fatty acids to enhance synergy. Group 3 is fundamental for the collecting action of 733 oxidised paraffin soap in the flotation of scheelite. The fatty acid soap in group 4 is not suitable for flotation due to its low solubility. This paper describes research done to remove apatite (phosphorus) from hematite ultrafine (70% finer than 25 micron) concentrate, recovered by electromagnetic separators at the FST Tailing Recovery Plant located in Chadormalu Iron Ore Complex through reverse froth flotation. As a result, iron and phosphorus content in magnetic concentrate (flotation feed) were 53.52% and 0.58%, respectively. Therefore, to increase the Fe content and decrease the P content of the sample, reverse flotation tests were applied. Chemical reagents used in this research consisted of sodium silicate as a depressant, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate as pH regulators, Alke & Dirol as fatty acid collectors and MIBC as frother. Process parameters including dosages of collectors, depressant and frother, preparation times of depressant and collectors, steps and time of frothing and pH range were selected. After doing flotation tests, in optimum condition, dosages of collectors were 1200 g/t, depressant 1200 g/t, pH in the range of 9.5 to 10, preparation time of collectors in the first step was eight minutes and at the other steps, four minutes; the number of frothing steps 4 and frothing time in each stage was three minutes. In this case, it was observed that the amount of phosphorus in the final concentrate was reduced to 0.05%, the Fe content increased from 53.52% to 61.66% and the Fe recovery achieved was 82.21%. "Southern Africa is generally thought to be well explored, with only limited potential for major new diamond discoveries. However, Chiadzwa in Zimbabwe and reports of a significant new kimberlite find in Angola are testimony to the dangers attached to an attitude that ‘there is nothing left to find’.Since the major discoveries in the central interior of South Africa in the 1870s, diamond exploration in the region has been led by market and political factors that influence the key exploration drivers of opportunity and value proposition. Unexpected new discoveries by new players always impact on existing producers and, from time to time, denial of opportunity through political or protectionist policies has inhibited investment in exploration.Entrepreneurial exploration appetite in southern Africa will be tempered by the potential value equation and security of investment. Overlaid on this, developments in diamond recovery technologies provide opportunity to reinvigorate current mines and old prospects previously considered too difficult or costly to exploit. Position on the cost curve will remain a key factor for survival in an increasingly competitive environment. IntroductionThe diamond industry in southern Africa boasts a history of 150 years of discovery and mining, forming the cornerstone of development of the core, modern economies at the southern tip of Africa.Since the discovery, in the 1860s and 1870s, of the secondary diamond placers and primary diamond-bearing kimberlite deposits in the central interior of the then Cape Colony and Orange Free State, southern Africa has endured as the pre-eminent diamondproducing region in the world. Notwithstanding periodic competition from significant new discoveries in other parts of the globe and the paucity of recent, new discoveries in the region, its ranking is unlikely to change in the short to medium term.In a geological context the region contains the Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe and Angola-Kasai cratons, identified in terms of Clifford’s rule as areas inherently prospective for diamonds, being underlain by portions of the Earth’s crust that are tectonically stable and older than 1.5 billion years (Clifford, 1992). Although the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) would, in a geographic context, be considered to be part of Central Africa, for the purposes of this review it is included in southern Africa since northeast Angola and the adjacent parts of the DRC form part of the same geological terrane and diamond production from both countries needs to be considered together. Historical and current diamond production from the northeastern parts of the DRC around Kisangani is not considered to be significant and its inclusion in the overall numbers for the DRC does not materially affect the overall picture presented here."

Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed. The sulphide flotation circuit at First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi mine in Zambia produced over 100,000 t of copper in 2019. For this circuit, mineralogical analysis has shown that the majority of the copper lost is hosted in fine liberated chalcopyrite, which is a paramagnetic mineral. The objective of this work was therefore to improve fine chalcopyrite recovery in the sulphide flotation circuit at Kansanshi, using a magnetic conditioning technology to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals. This theoretically increases the probability of attachment during collision and therefore improves recovery. A four-month paired ‘t’ test plant trial was carried out and comprised of consecutive ON-OFF periods with and without magnetic conditioning in the rougher flotation bank of the sulphide circuit. The experimental design involved assessment of recovery by size based on daily and weekly composite samples of feed and tails, sized using both wet-screening and cyclosizer. Both the daily plant data and the sized samples showed an increase in Cu recovery with magnetic conditioning ON. A 0.56% copper recovery improvement was measured with magnetic conditioning at a 99.4% confidence level. Keywords: Flotation, fine mineral, chalcopyrite, magnetic aggregation

In order to meet society’s ever-increasing demand for metals and address the numerous technical, economic and environmental challenges within the current mining context, a holistic approach to process design, which is grounded in mineralogy, is needed. This would ensure that the impact of varying process mineralogy (and associated chemistry) on technical considerations and the associated economic implications and environmental consequences are taken into account upfront. This investigation focuses on the commodity zinc due to its strategic value coupled with limited resource availability and the wide variety of substantially different process technologies in existence. As the most commonly processed zinc ores contain zinc sulphides, the mineralogy/chemistry of these ores and their associated process routes will be discussed. The findings have been generated through the analysis of two case studies, Teck’s Trail Operations (British Columbia, Canada) and Hudbay Minerals’ Flin Flon Operations (Manitoba, Canada). The flotation of zinc sulphide ores to produce concentrates with varying mineralogy, represents the starting point for both case studies. The hydrometallurgical process routes for the further refining of zinc and other valuable metals include roast-leach-electrowinning (RLE), and zinc pressure leaching (ZPL). The effect of process route choices on primary metal recovery (Zn), coproduction of other base metals (Cu, Pb), potential for other valuable metal production (Ag, Au) including less well known, but increasingly important trace elements (In, Ge), and the production of other by-products (H2SO4, S0) are discussed. The economic and environmental implications of these aspects will also be considered. It is concluded that a quantitative modelling approach must be taken where waste management is integrated into process system design and simulation as a key unit operation. Since 2012, Ghana has been implementing local procurement regulations in the mining sector to broaden and deepen linkages between mining and other sectors of the economy. The regulations have been implemented in collaboration with the mining industry. This paper offers an in-depth analysis of how the local procurement regulations and related initiatives have been implemented so far. Primary data gathered with semi-structured interviews and secondary sources of data indicate a steady improvement in both in-country procurement and local manufacturing of inputs for the mining industry. There are, however, some challenges relating to tariff structure and support (financial and technical) for local suppliers and manufacturers to meet high standards and demands of the mining industry. This calls for a well-thought-out strategy and programme of activities to sustain and improve on progress made.
