A mining engineer from South Africa, whose research has taken him to some of the world?s deepest gold mines, is the winner of the St Andrews Prize. Daniel Limpitlaw, 27, picked up a cheque for $25,000 for his dissertation on reversing the damage done by early mining technology, which he claims is partly responsible for blighting the urban environment in many South African cities. Launched in October 1998 by the University of St Andrews and international energy company Conoco, the St Andrews Prize sought practical solutions to environmental problems. It attracted interest from 450 individuals and groups from countries as diverse as China, Pakistan, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, the UK and the United States.

I?ve been asked to appraise the global role of coal and mining, and the best place I can think of to begin is with the World watch Institute, which purports to monitor all things global. Last fall the institute?s magazine, entitled World Watch, in a cover story called for a worldwide campaign to outlaw the use of coal before this century?s end. To my mind the article began the campaign. However, the institute had to admit that no such ban will be possible unless there is special help and heavy intervention?that is, novel policies and punitive taxes. I?ll quote directly from the magazine to underscore the point: ?without them the market will continue to deceive us into thinking coal is cheap, abundant and irreplaceable?.

ABSTRACT: The paper describes the characterisation studies of Tectonised Clay Shales at laboratory and in situ scale. The interest relates to tunnelling under squeezing and swelling conditions, in Italy, along the Apennines. The results of monitoring during full face excavation are presented in conjunction with numerical modelling. RESUME: Cet article présente la caractérisation, à l'échelle du laboratoire et in situ, des Argiles Chaotiques. L'attention est portée sur le creusement, dans ces milieux gonflants, des tunnels, dans les zones montagneuses des Appennini, en Italie. Enfin, on présentera les résultats de la modélisation numérique et la comparaison de ces derniers avec les mesures effectuées in situ. KURZFASSUNG: Die Arbeit beschreibt die Charakterisierungsstudien von tektonisierten Schiefertonen, sowohl im Labor als auch vor Ort. Das Interesse gilt dem Tunnelbau unter Quetsch- und Schwellbedingungen in Italien entlang der Apenninen. Electric furnaces used for smelting and those used for scrap melting exhibit different performance profiles in terms of electrical characteristics. However, the underlying principles are the same for either case. The rationalization of these variables is a major concern for furnace operators and designers. This paper presents the results of a two year study of high speed real time data from a number of electric furnaces around the world, covering a very wide range of design philosophy and product manufacture, to provide a better mathematical insight into rationalizing the furnace operation.

Our purpose is to record and to explain the widely changing numbers of the huge total of black workers on the gold mines of South Africa over the century from 1896 to 1996. These men were recruited from up to twenty territories, and their contributions are examined. The major areas providing labour over this long period have been Lesotho, the former Transkei within South Africa and Mozambique. From 1989 to 1996, for instance, these three areas accounted for over sixty per cent of the total labour force (tlf). Our principal Figure 1 shows the tlf fluctuating through time to reach a peak of 480 000 in 1988. Irregular falls are also documented with the most serious in 1995 to 180 000. Based on this graph we consider the political, economic, sociological and historical reasons behind these changing employment opportunities. These have included external world-scale events such as war or depression, as well as internal changes of national economy and policy. We show the importance for numbers employed of the discovery of gold in the Orange Free State in 1946, the influence generally of the ?Winds of Change? and the firm maintenance by the State of law and order. Varying gold production costs and profitability against high tax rates, allied with increasing wages and a lack of development capital, have led in the last decade to employment falling by fifty per cent, despite an actually higher value of gold output. Finally, this analysis considers the role of the migrant labour system as it affects, and is affected by, conditions in the gold mining industry, with special reference to its less than humane consequences in the numerically dominant territories of Lesotho and Transkei.

Mintek has been involved in numerous projects to remove Fe and Mn from dilute Co sulphate solutions by means of oxidative precipitation using air/SO2. Test work was done using a gas induction system, designed and supplied by Outotec. Various aspects, such as SO2 concentration, SO2 flowrate, impeller rotation speed and pH were investigated on a 2 m3 scale. Batch tests were performed using a residence time of 5 hours. Impeller rotation speeds of 0-220 rpm were tested, and it seemed that speeds of between 80 and 220 rpm gave similar Fe and Mn removal rates. Co and Cu losses were generally below 1% and 5% respectively at pH 3.

CIS countries are home to some of the world's largest producers of chrome, manganese and silicon ferro alloys and leading suppliers to world export markets. The region's ferro alloys production is rising faster than demand from its domestic steel industry - unit alloy consumption in domestic steelmaking is in fact falling as process efficiencies improve - and there is significant spare capacity available to increase production. CIS producers enjoy certain strategic advantages in the production of ferro alloys - for example, captive ore sup-plies, low power and labour costs - but must also meet certain challenges - such as lower labour productivity and greater distance to market than some of their competitors. CIS producers are ambitious but new investment is needed to upgrade some aging plants and overhaul outdated process technologies if they are to be more competitive with the world's leading producers and address the environmental issues that are now moving up the agenda. This paper describes the structure of the region's ferro alloys industry and discusses its advantages and disadvantages by alloy and by country. It considers how the ongoing process of restructuring and new investment in the industry might move forwards, based on its strengths and weaknesses, technical and environmental factors and the strategies of the main players. It asks how the industry might maximise its substantial potential - in particular, for the production of chrome and manganese ferro alloys - and examines the implications this holds for all global ferro alloys players.

Electrostatic separation has been a mainstay of minerals sands flowsheets for over 50 years. Recent electrostatic developments have shown better conductor/non-conductor separation than technology previously available. Results to date show significantly increased separation efficiency over prior-art high-tension roll electrostatic separator (HTR). These improvements allow greater simplification of MSP circuits by minimizing re-circulating loads. The distinct features of the eForce include: 1) A provision that minimizes the affects of particle size to improve separator performance, 2) an enhancement of the design and arrangement of the static electrode providing a greater attraction force for separating fine conductive particles, and 3) inner roll and outer plate electrode configuration to improve separation efficiency and throughput capacity. The aim of this research was to study the absorption characteristics of thermally dried fine coal from South African collieries. After milling to ?150 µm and pressure filtration, the samples were subjected to either air drying or thermal drying at 150°C. The samples were then put into a climate box at 28°C and at three different relative humidity levels, namely 30, 60 and 94 per cent. It was found that the equilibrium moisture content of thermally dried coal at a specific relative humidity was lower than that of air dried coal. The relationship between the equilibrium moisture content and relative humidity is described by 1 ? RH = exp (-KTMen). There was no relationship between the volatile matter content and equilibrium moisture content, but there was an increase in the equilibrium moisture content of the coal with an increase in mineral content. The moisture uptake rate increased with an increase in temperature and a decrease in particle size. A model is discussed that fitted the experimental data and gave a good prediction for changes in the conditions. There was no evidence of greater moisture absorption by thermally dried coal. The excavation of ramps and tunnels often requires high-speed development with (or without) the use of high-energy mining equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, TBMs and roadheaders. This high-speed development creates a challenge in terms of providing a safe and productive working environment. For example, heat from continuously exposed surrounding rock, heat from broken rock, heat generated by mining equipment, potential in flows of hot ground water, pollution from associated diesel equipment and the distance of the advancing face from fresh through-ventilation all have to be taken into account when designing ventilation systems for high-speed ramp and tunnel developments. This paper discusses methods of achieving acceptable environments at the face and along the length of the tunnel. The methodology has been successfully implemented in the development of long (up to 20 km) TBM drives in the Lesotho Highlands Project and in mining projects in hot rock using drill and blast methods as well as mechanized methods using continuous miners and roadheaders. The determination of heat loads includes calculation of the heat flow within the surrounding rock, evaluation of the operating cycle of the equipment and the contribution to the overall heat load of the broken rock as it travels out of the tunnel. The determination of heat loads from surrounding rock in new tunnels required a modification of the algorithms generally used for established excavations. The paper also examines the use of, for example, mobile duct and fan systems to ensure that fresh air is delivered to the specific areas where workers are located.

The DEEPMINE Collaborative Research Programme was established to create the technological and human resources platform that would make it possible to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. The DEEPMINE Programme has four goals: to acquire knowledge of and develop appropriate technology for new ultra-deep level mines, to stimulate education and training, to establish a culture of innovation, and to encourage rapid technology transfer and implementation. The research programme was launched in July1998 and will be completed in March 2002, with the final year focusing on the transfer of knowledge to the industrial partners. DEEPMINE represents a new model for conducting mining research: it is driven by industry needs; emphasizes collaboration between industrial partners, research organizations and tertiary education institutions; and has a novel joint-funding mechanism. DEEPMINE has employed a range of vehicles to transfer knowledge to its industrial partners. Novel aspects include: (a) electronic publication of Summary Reports and Guideline Handbooks that seek to consolidate the huge body of knowledge comprehensively and concisely, (b) a series of DEEPMINE Schools designed to enable industry practitioners to apply the knowledge to their current work situation, and (c) Consultancy Reviews, where DEEPMINE specialists seek to apply knowledge to specific real problems on mines.

In this study, a statistical model is suggested in order to determine the methane emission from a working seam. In the proposed method, methane concentrations which are systematically measured in return airway are the sample values, and the calculated statistical parameter is the upper confidence limit of the average of these values. At any given time, the probability of methane concentration in the return airflow to be lower than the calculated upper confidence limit value is 97.5%. The statistical method has been applied to the panel 206 of Armutcuk Mine, Turkish Hardcoal Enterprises. The calculated methane emission value for the considered shift was 15.18 m3/t.

Zincor uses a Roast-Leach-Electrowinning circuit to process zinc sulphide concentrates. It also processes zinc oxide fume, originating from a slag smelting operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Zincor achieved an average zinc recovery of 90.3% during the period January 2006 to May 2007. The bulk of the losses occurred in the iron and lead silver residues, both as soluble and un-dissolved losses. The un-dissolved losses in the iron residue constituted around 33% of the total zinc lost from the circuit, and were largely attributed to the presence of zinc-ferrite in the calcine used for neutralization during iron removal. As part of Zincor?s continuous improvement programme, the un-dissolved zinc losses in the iron residue were targeted by: the partial replacement of calcine with zinc oxide fume (from the DRC); and the preferential use of ?low-ferrite content calcine? as neutralizing agents in the iron removal circuit. These initiatives, coupled with other operational factors, resulted in a marked improvement in recovery to 92.6% during June to December 2007. The zinc oxide fume, directly fed to the circuit, required investigation of the halide rejection capacity of the Zincor circuit. Rejection of chloride via the magnesium bleed operation was considered adequate. Fluoride was mainly rejected via the iron (~70%) and lead silver (~27%) residues. Fluoride rejection via the lead silver residue varied significantly, probably as a result of variations in the sparingly soluble CaF2 content in the feed. The mechanism for fluoride rejection in the iron residues is uncertain. The fluoride rejection capacity of the Zincor iron residue (comprising of mainly jarosites, schwertmannite and ferrihydrite) at 2 ? 4 mg/L F in solution, was estimated at 0.14 ? 0.19 kgF/tFe residue.

Solving ventilation networks of natural splitting is a basic problem in mine ventilation. Several mathematical techniques are used to solve this problem. This paper proposes a new method which combines the advantages of both classical Hardy Cross method and unconstrained optimization techniques. The trials carried out on model networks have shown that the method offers some facilities in the analysis of mine ventilation networks. A running facebreak ahead of the powered support units occurred on the number 4 seam at Matla Coal’s number 3 shaft (Matla 3) in April and May 2002.Very difficult mining conditions were experienced for a distance of some 150 m in the tailgate and to a lesser extent on the face itself. The paper analyses the main causes for the high stress conditions leading to the facebreak, namely, the existence of a >20 m dolerite sill close to surface and the effect of stopping longwalling on the overlying 5 seam. Difficulties experienced during the facebreak are discussed, including, pillar and roof collapses in the tailgate, high stress areas ahead of the face causing roof and sidewall stability problems, flushing of broken rock into the face area at the tailgate, secondary mid-face breaks, and the availability of critical support units. Successful rock engineering interventions and learning points were that, a goaf angle of 14.6° was found to be more realistic than the previously used 20 to 25° in predicting dolerite sill behaviour in this area, pre-split blasting of the sill significantly reduced stress on the face and tailgate allowing re-support work to proceed, varying pillar support types were analysed and rated, the need to always have a ground control “First Aid” kit available was recognised and a strategy for subsequent panels beneath the sill was developed. Numerous support units were used and the performance of the more suitable types is briefly discussed. Gullies are the vital in-stope excavations that provide access for mining personnel and material to, and mined ore from, the producing faces in the tabular hard rock mines. They pose a serious problem in most mines because they induce stress orientations, which, combined with blast damage, produce adverse rock fracture patterns that contribute to the loss of hangingwall and sidewall integrity. Rock-related injury statistics confirm this by highlighting gullies as the second-highest risk area in South African hard rock mines. Inappropriate gully geometries, poor blasting practice, and non-adherence to accepted standards worsen the problem. The aim of this work is, firstly, to provide guidelines to select the correct gully geometry and appropriate support for a particular geotechnical environment and, secondly, to review the practical issues behind gully safety and stability. In order to meet these aims, this paper reviews the available literature on gullies and their history, and reports on an industry-wide survey of practices and opinions. Then it covers observations from underground visits to 107 gullies situated in the respective geotechnical environments of the Basal Reef, Beatrix Reef, Vaal Reef, Carbon Leader Reef, Ventersdorp Contact Reef, Kimberley Reef, Kalkoenkrans Reef, Merensky Reef, and UG2 Reef. Despite the differing geotechnical conditions and gully geometries, common problems are experienced with geological structure, stress, and fracturing. Results from numerical modelling are also presented to help analyse the underground observations and to quantify the merits of the different gully layouts. It is concluded that there are no new techniques available to improve gully stability, but that significant improvements in safety are attainable by employing the correct gully geometry for the geotechnical environment, good blasting practice, and appropriate support.

In this study, reduction behaviours of Turkish chromite concentrate (48 % Cr2O3, 13.30 % FeO, 18.33 % MgO, 12.37 % Al2O3, 5.76 % SiO2) and nickel oxide by Fe-C alloy in graphite crucible were investigated. In the first stage of experiments, steel scraps were melted in graphite crucibles and were saturated with carbon at 1600 °C and 30 min. In the second stage, mixtures of different amount of chromite concentrate, nickel oxide and flux additives (CaO,SiO2 and CaF2) were charged into the graphite crucible containing the Fe-C alloy and heated to 1600 °C for different reduction times (0-180 min) under argon gas. The highest Cr and Ni con-tents in alloys were found as 11.41 and 14.37 % and the highest Cr and Ni recoveries were found as 88 and94 %, respectively at 180 min.

To be meaningful the sharing of ideas about the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and social issues within the context of Mining and Metallurgy (M&M) requires an honest scrutiny of the M&M/social environment relationship, both past and present. It is not a secret that this relationship has been and is fraught with difficulties. Thus from all perspectives (M&M, society and environmental and social consultants) such a dissection, that highlights the realities, both good and bad, is uncomfortable. For this section of the colloquium to have any value, the honest but difficult approach needs to be taken.
