These proceedings consist of an overview of the underground metal and nonmetal mina fire protection research currently being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers address the areas of prompt, reliable fire detection, fire planning and warning, fire suppression, and personnel protection. Selected topics are included here that cover fire protection systems for shafts, underground fueling areas, and mobile underground mining equipment; spontaneous combustion, improved stench, and product-of-combustion fire warning systems; computer-aided ventilation modeling; fire doors; and an investigation of fire hazards in mine timbers. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

Many challenges are faced by workers in lower-seam (42 inches or less) mines. The lower-seam heights confine mine workers to their knees as they perform their daily tasks such as installing roof bolts, delivering supplies, repairing belt, or cutting coal. Miners working in these lower seams often consider kneepads to be their only line of defense against knee injuries. However, healthy knees do not start and stop with kneepads. Other interventions such as changing postures, proper hygiene, and work station design may also be used to reduce mine workers? risks for developing knee injuries. Incorporating these and many other interventions into a mine worker?s ?way of life? is an important step to ensuring a long, healthy career and retirement. Keeping knees healthy is also a key aspect to reducing costs in low-seam mines as the industry battles rising health care costs, and training/recruitment of replacement workers is time-consuming and costly. Educating the workforce about the possible interventions to reduce knee injury risk is a primary objective for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Therefore, NIOSH researchers, along with industry and academia, developed a training package to educate the mining com­munity about some possible interventions beyond kneepads that may be used to help decrease knee injury rates. Increased awareness and simple changes are the first steps to reducing knee injuries.

"The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties.A preliminary examination of the Mount Hope mine was made in January 1943 by the Bureau's engineers, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling.The mine is in the unsurveyed portion of T. 22 N., R. 1 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, south-central Eureka County, Nevada, 25 miles by road north of the village of Eureka. A partly graded and Graveled secondary road connects the mine and Eureka on U. S. Highway 50.Extensive sampling was done by the Bureau in February. 1943. Core drilling from the surface was started on March 15, 1944, and completed on April 2, 1545. The 16 holes drilled totaled 7,215 feet. The mining company also did extensive underground core drilling from April 21, 1944, to January 4, 1945. This report gives the results of core drilling supervised by the Bureau of Mines.The drilling program was designed to explore for extensions of the mineralization exposed in the mine workings. As a result of drilling, additional ore was found, and it is believed that this project has fulfilled the purpose for which it was planned.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization, of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to na¬tional security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation test. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assists director.With respect to this report special acknowledgment is due to Charles W. Merriam of the United States Geological Survey for his interpretation of the Mount Hope mine Geology and his cooperation throughout the project; Col. Leverett Davis, former lessee of the property; K. Intense vibration can be transmitted to the hands and arms of workers who use hand-held percussive or vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. Continued habitual exposure to vibration directed to the hands can cause patterns of various symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HVAS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published ISO 5349 in 1986.3 This standard specified methods for measuring and evaluating vibration directed into the hands from hand-held vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published ANSI S3.34 the same year.1 This standard was modeled after ISO 5349-1986 and specified methods for assessing exposure to hand-arm vibration. The Parliament of the European Union has issued the European Union Human Vibration Directive-2002/44/EC, which specifies vibration daily exposure action values (DEAV) of 2.5 m/s2 and daily exposure limit values (DELV) of 5.0 m/s2. These values have generally been accepted by medical experts, scientists, and engineers in governmental agencies, research institutions, and industry in the USA and other countries.2 When they are achieved, they will reduce the potential for the development of symptoms related to HAVS among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. Significant improvements in measurement and analysis instrumentation, miniature and subminiature accelerometers, and medical diagnostic and assessment protocols have being introduced since 1986 when ANSI S3.34 was first published. In response to these improvements and the introduction of the EU Human Vibration Directive, ANSI Working Group S2.39 developed the revision to ANSI S3.34, which has now been published as ANSI S2.70-2006.2 Method ANSI S2.70 specifies the use of the hand-arm vibration measurement procedures outlined in ISO 5349, Parts 1 and 2.2,4,5 It requires the measurement of ISO frequency-weighted acceleration values in three mutually orthogonal axes of vibration. These values are then vectorially added to obtain the vibration total value, ahv: [ ] where ahwx, ahwy, and ahwz are the measured r.m.s. "INTRODUCTION The Krausse Estate property was the site of the first lead silver mining in western Kentucky, which began with the sinking of the Andrew Jackson shaft in 1835 3/. The earliest miners considered fluorspar of no value and threw it upon the waste dump, but Crittenden County later became an important part of the western Kentucky and southern Illinois fluorspar district 4/, which has produced about 90 percent of the fluorspar mined in the United States. By 1945, approximately 35,000 tons of fluordpar ore had been produced from the Estate property.This property can be reached by traveling west from Marion on Highway 60 from 2.5 miles, than northward 3 miles. The road from the paved highway to the mines is very rough but not impassable even in bad weather. Ore is hauled 5 1/2 miles by truck to custom mills at Marion, a town of 2, 000 population, where the Illinois Central Railway was a freight station.Hurricane Creek runs through the eastern part of the property. The surface slopes steeply upward to west from the creek, and the topography is rough. The top of the hill is about 150 feet above the creek.The climate permits working throughout the year, but spring rains cause surface water to enter mine and water apparently drains southward along the fractured fault zones, so that when no water is being pumped at properties north of the Krausse Estate a heavy flow comes on the Krausse."

Occupational exposure to whole body vibration has long been associated with increased incidence of low back pain and low back injuries1. A number of studies have investigated transmissibility of seat pan vibration 5, 6. While transmissibility has been well researched, the mechanism by which vibration may induce injury has not been thoroughly studied. Winter et al. identified increased reflex response delay after vibration exposure and speculated that muscular fatigue may be the cause of this increase9. However, a mechanism has yet to be demonstrated completely. A potential mechanism that may explain the increased risk is neuromotor habituation. Muscle spindle organs have been shown in the extremities to be sensitive to muscle and tendon vibration. Rapid length changes in muscle have been shown to result in kinesthetic illusions as the regular firing of the muscle spindles is interpreted as muscle lengthening4, 7. These illusions have also been demonstrated in the paraspinal musculature2. With removal of vibration, research in the extremities has demonstrated increased positioning errors, probably due to neuromotor habituation8. In this research, it has been hypothesized that neuromotor habituation after exposure to occupational vibration will increase positioning errors. It is further hypothesized that these errors can be shown to be linked to increased reflex response time. Such increased reflex response time could, in turn, decrease spinal stability and increase low back injury risk. Methods Both positioning error and sudden load response were measured before and after exposure to 20 minutes of 5 Hz, 0.223 m/s2 RMS seat pan vibration. Subjects were asked to sit on an unpadded seat without a backrest. Throughout the whole body vibration period, subjects were instructed to put their hands on a stable hand rest and feet on an adjustable stable footrest. The subjects were instructed to assume a comfortable and relax sitting posture for the duration of the exposure. Positioning error was measured using an active-active reposition sense protocol. Electromagnetic markers (Motionstar, Ascension Tech, Burlington, VT) were used to track trunk motion. With markers attached to the skin at the T10 vertebra, the S1 vertebra and manubrium, trunk flexion (the angle from vertical of the line connecting T10 and S1) and lumbar curvature (the difference in inclination of the T10 and S1 markers) were tracked. In the reposition sense protocol, subjects were asked to maintain an upright trunk flexion and to rotate their pelvis and lumbar curvature to assume a target lumbar curvature. In the protocol subjects completed training trials, where they were asked to match their lumbar curvature using a visual display, and assessment trials, where they were asked to reproduce the lumbar curvature from memory. After two initial training trials, training trials and assessment trials were alternated for a total of 3 assessment trials. Reposition error was defined as the absolute difference between the target lumbar curvature and the lumbar curvature the subject assumed during the assessment trials.

Safety and cost in mining coal beds under the extreme pressures found at depth, full extraction to conserve resources, and even surface subsidence to minimize damage of improved areas have directed much well-deserved attention, in the United Kingdom; to roof-control methods. Because the effects of pressure will be felt intensely as our Pennsylvania anthracite mines grow deeper, the senior author took advantage of an opportunity afforded by a mission to Europe3/ to observe, to a limited extent, the effects of pressures found in deep mines and the manner in which they are con trolled. Organized research relating to strata control has been carried on in Great Britain for nearly 25 years. These activities have been ably outlined by Dr. D. W. Phillips.4/ Physical properties of coal-measure rocks, movements of roof and floor, and types of face and roadway supports have been investigated. Same of the forces induced by the extraction of coal have been measured. The results of this research have been publicized and openly discussed, and much progress has been made in establishing a better factual understanding of roof-control problems and their solution.

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for the Philippines for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work was done through the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J01225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) eimber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and balsting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

"The spatial distribution of airborne dusts, deposition of dust in the airway, as well as the effect of airflow velocity and particle density on dust behavior in mine airways were studied in a set of experiments performed in a mine airway under controlled conditions. Considerable deposition of dust near the source was indicated. Pronounced effects due to velocity were observed in ambient dust concentration and deposition along the mine airway, both in the respirable and the total size ranges. Cross-sectional concentration measurements indicate an increase in concentration from the roof to the floor. The average cross-sectional concentration is about 75% of the concentration in the center of the airway.IntroductionA number of studies have been performed since the early 1950s on the behavior of dust in mine air (Bradshaw and Godbert, 1954; Dawes and Slack, 1954; Bradshaw et al., 1954; Hall, 1955-56; Reinhardt, 1971; Ford, 1971; Courtney et al., 1982). While the experimental data available from these studies are indeed useful in understanding dust cloud behavior in a specific situation, no generalized conclusions can be drawn because of the lack of data on parameters such as flow velocity, size distribution of the source dust, and particle density. These change from mine to mine or even within the same mine. The present study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust particles in underground' mine airways (National Academy of Sciences, 1980). The characteristics studied encompassed airborne concentrations and floor depositions over the entire size range as well as the respirable size range. The experimental results in this paper are intended to complement a mathematical model developed to predict ambient concentration and deposition of airborne dust in mine airways (Bhaskar and Ramani, 1986)."

The year 1986 was not a good year for the world's mineral industry from several viewpoints. Levels of production, both of crude minerals and processed forms, registered declines in the cases of a greater number of commodities than the number that recorded increases. The overall value of world crude mineral production was estimated to have increased, but only very slightly in terms of constant dollars to nearly $997 billion. Although there were modest increases in the consumption of all major fuels and most major metals, the latter at least apparently resulted more from drawdowns of inventories than from increased production (fuel consumption increases did come from higher output levels), and consumption of most major fertilizer and chemical commodities (nitrogen, phosphate, and sulfur) were at lower levels than those in 1985. Prices for a number of mineral commodities declined, headed by the very substantial drop in world crude petroleum prices, but also including downturns for a number of metals and industrial minerals as well. There was insufficient information to reliably fix the level of the dollar value of world trade in minerals, for while output was up in the case of some large-volume materials such as iron ore, coal, and crude and refined petroleum, suggesting that the volume of trade in physical units may have increased, declining prices may well have offset quantitative gains.

Research was done by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of a low-molecular-weight polymer on wet grinding of quartz, dolomite, and a copper ore. A 5-in ball mill equipped with a torque sensor for precise measurement of input energy was used for batch grinding tests. Grinding parameters were determined from size distribution data on the feed material and ground product. Zeta potential measurements were made to determine the effect of the polymer on the surface properties of the three materials, and a viscometer was used to measure the effect of the polymer on slurry viscosity. The addition of the polymer caused a sharp increase in the negative value of the zeta potential for all three materials, indicating that pronounced adsorption was taking place. At a constant slurry percent solids, addition of the polymer caused a similar reduction in slurry viscosity for each material. For quartz, dolomite, and the copper ore, grinding efficiency, as measured by kilogram of product per kilowatt hour passing a given screen size, was not affected by the addition of the polymer. However, the lowering in slurry viscosity caused by addi-tion of the polymer permits grinding at a higher slurry percent solids.

In the production of oil end gas, engineering methods have been applied less than in any other branch of the oil industry. While refineries, gasoline plants, pipe-line and other transportation systems, and even drilling wells to a great extent, take advantage of engineering skill, the tendency has been to assume that the handling of producing wells is merely a mechanical and routine matter. At present few companies employ engineers to study oil and gas production methods with a view of increasing the general efficiency of recovery, but in vie, of the advancement in other lines of the petroleum industry by the application of engineering principles, does it not seem likely that the production branch may benefit also by engineering studies? Engineering applied to the handling of producing wells falls under two general headings, - first, the efficient handling of wells from the time of their inception in order to obtain the greatest possible ultimate production, and, second, the rehabilitation of old properties that have been handled carelessly in their early lives. To date, the engineering work that has been done on oil production problems falls mostly in the second class. For example, the use of vacuum and the application of compressed air have proved successful in some instances in stimulating wells of low gas pressure. These methods are costly to apply and are adapted to small wells in which the gas is almost exhausted, or in which the original gas pressure is negligible. The experiments described in this paper fall under the first heading, as they were made with an idea of learning toe probable extent to which the gas production of an oil well can be curtailed while gas in the sand is still plentiful, and thus saved for doing work during the later period of a well's life. Because of the scope of the experiments, this paper does not include a discussion of back pressure on flowing wells or for purposes other than cutting down the gas produced with each barrel of oil.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1987 was $446.6 million, an increase over that of 1986 and the first increase in 3 years. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite and ferroalloys; third in bentonite, crushed dolomite, crushed marble, and fire clay; and fourth in masonry cement. Trends and Developments.-Employment in the minerals industry remained relatively low for the second year even though the overall unemployment rate dropped to 7.9% by December. Employment in mining and primary metals dropped about 10% and 2%, respectively.

"INTRODUCTION The idea of direct steel is by no means new. Although the work of Bessemer and Siemens provided simple and effective moans for converting pig iron into steel and established the ""blast-furnace route"" as the almost universal method of producing steel, metallurgists have not ceased to dream of direct steel. By direct steel is meant any process by which iron oxide in ore is reduced to Iron of the same or greater purity than the final steel or wrought iron. That is, carbon or alloying elements would be added as needed, not reduced in unwanted quantities into the iron and then removed more or completely by refining (Bessemer or open hearth) only to be readded in desired quantities.In general, direct-steel processes are ""sponge-iron"" processes, because reducing iron oxide without simultaneously alloying the iron with carbon, phcophorus, sulfur, and silicon present in ore and fuel succeeds only if the temperature is below the melting point of the iron. Such solid iron formed by reduction of iron oxide at relatively low temperature is sponge iron, which is butlery and porous. When the reduction proceeds at the higher temperature at which the particles of metal can weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that do not have the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might preferably be called simply ""direct iron."""

Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. "INTRODUCTION This report is the second of a series of studies of analysis of energy requirements and characteristics of various machines used in the production of coal in underground mines and the losses in distribution of energy to these machines. The test equipment used in these studies is described in Report of Investigations 3615. 7/ The preliminary study data and results of tests made on various types of mechanical-leading cutting, and transporting equipment at two mines. This report is analysis of the energy requirements of the energy requirements of the underground equipment of a third mine. An analysis of the use of energy and its distribution usually requires in a saving in energy consumption and the reduction of hazards. The distribution system should be designed to supply energy effectively and study for the efficient operation of all machines."

Ethical concerns of in-vivo procedures and poor repeatability of non-invasive techniques have been major limitations in estimating vibration-induced spine loads through experiments. The biodynamic models of seated human body exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) have evolved for defining the frequency-weightings, enhancement of human responses to WBV, and developing anthropodynamic manikins for seating assessment activities. The widely reported mechanical-equivalent models, solely based on through- or to-the-body biodynamic response functions, do not seem to resemble the biomechanical structure and do not yield information on the dynamic loading and deflections of segments of concern, namely the spine. On the other hand, biomechanical models with representative anatomical structure and anthropometry are being attempted to simulate segmental movements and the coupling effects, using Finite elements (FE) or multi-body dynamics (MBD) formalisms, which could provide important insights into the inter-vertebral forces [1]. While the FE models pose considerable complexities primarily related to characteristics of the bio-material properties, the MBD technique with discrete rigid bodies offers the flexibility to create multi-segment models with relative ease and lower computational cost. In this study, a preliminary multibody dynamic model of a seated human body exposed to WBV along the vertical direction is formulated using MSC/ADAMS software. The model validity is demonstrated by comparing selected responses with the available measured data. Methods The seated human is represented by nine rigid body segments, including: head, neck, thoracic and lumbar torso, pelvis, hands and thighs, as shown in Fig. 1. The rigid bodies are coupled through different rotational and translational joints, some of which are force elements to allow vertical translations and sagittal–plane rotations of the segments. The measurements of transmission of vertical vibration through-the-body generally require subjects to voluntarily maintain a vertical head position to reduce head-accelerometer orientation errors. The head–neck–shoulder joint is thus considered to be rigid. The shoulders are assumed to be rigidly attached to the thoracic segment. The torso is made up of three (upper, middle and lower) segments connected by visco-elastic revolute and translational joints to permit relative pitch and vertical motions. The forces and torques generated by the joints are derived assuming linear stiffness and damping properties, which were identified from published studies. The pelvis is connected to the rigid seat by similar elements representing the visco-elastic properties of the buttock tissues. The two thighs are rigidly connected to the pelvis, while the segment masses are chosen from the anthropometric data for the 50th percentile male subject. This Bureau of Mines report delineates the coal reserve base of anthracite, bituminous and subbituminous coals, and lignite, by mining method and sulfur content, for coal-bearing States west of the Mississippi River. The parameters used to establish the reserve base definition are the result of a joint agreement by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey. The reserve base of low-sulfur coal, =10 percent sulfur, is 167,324.5 million tons; medium-sulfur coal, 1.1-3.0 percent sulfur, is 37,531.5 million tons; and high-sulfur coal, >3.0 percent sulfur, is 11,244.1 million tons. The reserve base of coal with an unknown sulfur level is 18,323.0 million tons. The percentages of deep and strippable coal are 56 percent and 44 percent, respectively. The basis for reserve base estimates and analytical data for this report was the Fuels Availability System, a Bureau of Mines data bank containing numerous data tin fossil fuels. Information contained in the system was obtained from publications of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Geological Survey, State agencies, private publications, and company data.
