A South Africa iron ore mine reported a decline in blast performance and ore and waste fragmentation. Preliminary investigation by the explosives services company found that the straight gassed bulk emulsion was breaking down and collapsing inside of some loaded slept blastholes. The bulk emulsion loaded at the subject site was manufactured in country and shipped to various clients throughout the region, with normal function in blasts at other sites. Historically, the bulk formulation emulsion being used at the subject mine site also performed well and without issue. This raised the question, “why is this bulk emulsion now breaking down and not firing in blastholes?”. Iron ore mines are not typically associated with reactive or acidic ground, and ground sample reactivity testing against the emulsion confirmed this. So, if not reactive ground or acidic water, then what is causing the emulsion to breakdown?

Low density explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. These initially consisted of various diluted forms of ANFO formulated to slow the rate of reaction. One such product that was developed was a blend of ammonium nitrate and rubber. This product uses a coarse fuel provided by granulated rubber to slow the reaction rate of the explosive rather than being a diluted form of ANFO. There has always been a technical difficulty in blending two dissimilar materials without subsequent segregation.

Waste oil is a growing problem throughout industries where environmentally responsible disposal ways are usually costly. There are many industries have developed process to reuse of waste oil as a source of energy on their own premises. Hanwha Mining Services Indonesia is one of blasting service that manufacturing explosive using waste oil. The usage of 60 % waste oil content in fuel solution already developed applied since 2020 at Petrosea-Kideco Site and will be increase until 100 % in 2022. The purpose of this research is to analyze the increasing of waste oil usage from 60 % to 100 % content at Petrosea Pit without reducing the emulsion quality and performance, and surely eliminate the fuel cost and reducing waste oil processing cost. Some trial conducted to determine the effect and quality of using 100 % waste oil content on emulsion at production blast. The method use to know the quality of 100% waste oil of emulsion is by direct application on bench blast. Using Microtrap VoD recorder, explosive energy will be recorded into m/s dimension, microtrap recorder the speed of explosive detonation in line with the speed of burning wire in the blast holes. The summarized of this research present that the using of 100 % waste oil content on emulsion can be applied on bench operation with the result of Velocity of Detonation (VoD) data is 4,559 mm/s, the mean of fragmentation size is in range 65.31 to 225.62 mm, the average of digging time on 1st layer is in range 10.2 to 11.6 s and on 2nd layer is in range 8.9 to 9.5 s, and the productivity still achieve on target. The result of all parameter quality still in the standard range of Hanwha and Petrosea.

Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of blasted ore and caved waste rock. Production blasting has significant impact on the efficiency and productivity of SLC output, affecting material fragmentation, flow and recovery. Misfires could occur during blasting in SLC, which results in the loss of explosives and poor fragmentation. Usually, the blastholes are top-initiated with redundant lower primers set at + 25 ms as a precaution. If the top primers fail, the lower primers may initiate the explosive, which will induce out-of-sequence delays that can influence fragmentation and gravity flow. This work investigated the impact of misfires and out-ofsequence delays on fragmentation and gravity flow through numerical simulations using a coupled finite element and discrete element method. Different scenarios of misfires and out-of-sequence delays were studied, and the fragment size distribution was obtained to evaluate the blasting performance. The material flow behaviour was investigated to assess the gravity flow process. The results indicated that misfires significantly affect the fragmentation and the gravity flow process while the effects of out-of-sequence delays are not so significant for the investigated cases

This abstract explores the historical progression and key advancements in electronic detonator technology highlighting its impact on the industry as well as the challenges in deploying these types of technologies. Electronic detonators represent a significant departure from traditional initiation systems offering precise timing capabilities and improved reliability and safety. The early development of electronic detonators can be traced back to the late 20th century with the introduction of basic electronic initiation systems. These early iterations provided a glimpse into the potential for greater control and accuracy in blasting operations. As technology progressed, electronic detonators underwent significant refinement incorporating advanced features such as programmable delay times, multiple firing sequences, expanded blast size and enhanced communication capabilities. These advancements revolutionized the way explosives are deployed in mining and demolition applications enabling engineers to tailor blasts to specific geological or environmental conditions and structural requirements. One of the most notable developments in electronic detonator technology is the integration of microprocessor-based control systems. These systems allow for precise calibration of detonation parameters, including timing, sequence, and energy distribution. By leveraging microprocessor technology electronic detonators have become increasingly sophisticated offering unprecedented levels of precision and safety in blasting operations. The advent of wireless communication technologies has further augmented the capabilities of electronic detonators. Wireless detonation systems enable remote initiation and real-time monitoring of blasting operations enhancing safety by reducing the need for personnel in hazardous environments. Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

The Edikan mine in Ayamfuri, Ghana, faces economic challenges and community resistance due to its proximity to residential areas, particularly concerning blasting operations. Controlled blasting trials using air deck applications were conducted to address community concerns by minimizing environmental impacts and explosive costs. This method involves utilizing an air gap within blast holes to prolong the action of shock waves on the rock mass, enhancing crack formation and reducing rock movement. The trial project at the Edikan open pit gold mine aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of air deck blasting in reducing ground vibrations and overpressures, and to assess its impact on blast performance and economics in the prevailing geological conditions of meta-sediment and hard granite rocks. Results indicated lower Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) and Peak Sound Pressure Levels (PSPL) values in the air-decked blasts. Additionally, more uniform rock fragmentation and enhanced blast economics were achieved. Explosive costs were reduced by 20–24%, saving $0.97 to $2.24 per hole depending on the rock type. Overall blasting costs per volume decreased to $0.54 in granite and $0.48 in meta-sediment compared to conventional methods.

In metalliferous mining operations, subdrill is that portion of the blast hole that is drilled below the target grade elevation, and in most cases loaded with explosives. Its primary aim is to enable efficient excavation down to the target floor level. Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. Does anyone have any definitive information on vibration limits for damage to well casings near blasting? Also, are people using self-imposed limits when approaching cased wells? I can only tell you what I have personally done with success. Often in new construction in hard rock, the well is drilled before the foundation is excavated and before the ditch for the water line is excavated. These both require drilling and blasting. Under these circumstances when blasting for the ditch for the waterline we will drill right up to within 10 inches (not feet) of the well casing. We drill line holes the width of the ditch, then about a foot from this, another row of trim holes then as we move away from the casing holes for 1 1/4 inch stick powder for about three rows then as we get further still, we can load with ANFO. I do not have vibration data for this but my experience has been that as long as you are not displacing the material into the casing that no damage is done. These typically are steel casings for residential water service.

It is a well-known industry fact that many mine sites around the globe experience blast holes that have elevated temperatures due to reactive ground, geochemical reactions, geomorphic reactions, sub level open fires, etc. It has been reported in many previous industry publications (White, Saputra et al) that elevated blast hole temperatures are a norm at many mine sites and are dealt with on an ongoing basis while the drill and blast process continues under elevated states of alert. The choice of explosives products including the type of detonator, primer, accessory, and bulk product all must be taken into consideration when loading blast holes where there is a known potential for elevated temperature conditions. It should also be noted that these elevated temperatures inside blast holes can be consistent throughout the blast hole length or vary in position within the blast hole depending on the mine conditions mentioned in the opening statement above. The risks associated with the loading of primers and bulk explosives in holes where elevated temperatures are present include: the ejection of the bulk explosives product, deflagration of the explosives during initiation of the blast or premature and uncontrolled initiation of a blast hole(s). This paper describes a unique and novel approach to the active monitoring of the temperature within blast holes with the application of electronic detonators with integrated temperature measuring (ITM) capabilities, deployed and demonstrated at a mine site in Mexico during January 2023 to March 2023. The deployment of ITM capable electronic detonators allows a user to monitor and record the real time temperature at multiple locations (e.g., toe, middle and collar) at each electronic detonator’s position within the blast hole, with the ability to react instantaneously to elevations in temperature reported. The measurement of the temperature can be for a single ITM electronic detonator, or simultaneous for an array of ITM electronic detonators, allowing for the potential for the data to be represented by a time/temperature/hole depth three-dimensional heat map. Changes in temperature at different borehole positions can vary, however, often the collar position is expected to be the most reactive due the combination of bulk explosive product and oxygen exposure, which can be confirmed with the application of the ITM electronic detonators. A mine site’s reaction to a measured elevated temperature within a blast hole can vary depending on the temperature measured and the change in temperature from the last measurement made. The study was found to produce real-time in-hole temperature information which was previously unobtainable without the introduction of another device. New and adaptive elevated temperature hole policies can be created and adapted proactively as real time information is received, leading to a safer mining operation.
