Blast vibration and airblast overpressure signals are generally rated and compared only by their maximum amplitude and the principal frequency associated with the peak pulse. The scaled distance concept is often used to predict peak amplitudes and can be applied for blasts in the same area of a mine to evaluate the statistical properties of a set of readings.

In the early 1980s, a method for controlling blast vibrations other than by modifying the Scaled Distance came into use. Research studies had indicated that blast vibration could be simulated by detonating a signature hole with the vibration monitored at critical locations, and then using a computer to superpose the waveforms with varying delays. By choosing delay times that create destructive interference at frequencies that are favored by the local geology, the “ringing” vibration that excites structural elements in houses and annoys neighbors could be reduced.

Sands Hill Coal, located in Wellston, Ohio produces coal for steam generation and crushed limestone for the aggregate market in southeastern Ohio. This paper concerns the blasting and production of the limestone which lies between the #5 and #4 coal seams. The limestone bed averages 8 to 10 feet in thickness and is overlain with 17 to 20 feet of shale from the floor of the #5 seam.

Although many billions of pounds of explosives and blasting agent have been used by the mining industry, the accident safety record has improved significantly in the past 25 years. A method for safe fracture of rock, concrete and other brittle solid material using dynamic water pressure by explosion is provided. The propagation of the pressure is studied with Allievi water hammer theory. Wave equation and velocity formulas of the pressure propagation are shown. The dynamic water pressure is tested in the lab. The propagation of the pressure is simulated by MMIC-2D. The results of fracturing rock in the lab and on a quarry are presented.

Blasting is a "necessary evil" to the utility contractor. It can make or break even the most solvent. Housing development expansion and higher treatment of effluents are causing utilities to appear in more congested areas. This paper discusses some of the aspects of utility blasting in the State of Virginia. Consideration is given to bid procedures, pre-blast surveys, record-keeping and practical application.

The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company operates three open pit iron mines on the Marquette Iron Range of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Open pit iron ore mining began in the area in the 1840's. Underground mining was predominant from 1860 through 1960. Large scale low grade-open pit iron ore mining began in the early 1950's with the establishment of the Humboldt Mine, concentrator and pelletizing plant. This pit operated until 1970, when the reserves were exhausted.

A new technique of dimensional stones blasting for achieving directional rock cutting by conical shaped charges is proposed in this study. Public perception is a significant challenge facing the explosives industry. The public often perceives that its needs and interests are in direct competition with those of blasting companies’, leading to conflict between corporations and the community. This misunderstanding lends to unnecessary political and regulatory hardship, and ultimately, social discontent. Although individual corporations implement strategies to address conflict, many of these techniques are insufficient. Consequently, stakeholders resort to expensive litigation. If blasting companies could reduce or eliminate the volume of judicial disputes, valuable resources could be re-directed to more productive activities.

It has been reported that expanded poIystyrene and ANFO prills ‘were mixed on a blasting site for controlled blasting (ISANOL). Although there seems to be few possibility of their segregation because mixing on a blasting site is done, there is a great possibility of segregation in packing, transportation and loading of the product due to the different densities of the two ingredients in Japan where mixing on a blasting site still remains inoperative. The fiee-flowing property of ANFO prills was lost with the passage of time because the Abel oil infiltrated into the expanded polystyrene and that gave the product high viscosity.

This paper documents the relationship between material handling and processing costs compared to blasting cost. The old adage, "The cheapest crushing is done in the pit", appears accurate in this case study. Comparison of the accumulated cost of: powder, selected wear materials and electricity; indicate a strong, inverse correlation with powder factor (lbs powder/long ton of rock). In this case, the increased powder cost is more than offset by electrical savings alone.
