Finely dispersed, primary sulphide mineralisation in the Cu-Fe sulphide zones of copper-bearing shale of the Polish part of the Permian Kupferschiefer is mainly present in the form of framboids and spherules. This type of mineralisation is especially well preserved in organic-rich shale, where it often dominates over a later diagenetic mineralisation that consists of large grains and veins. In microscopic observations special attention was paid to composite grains of copper and iron sulphides. The results suggest that the Cu-Fe and Cu sulphides precipitated in the Kupferschiefer sediment before pyritisation of the framboids had ceased and that they replaced metastable precursors of pyrite. The precipitation of copper sulphides could have been delayed owing to the formation of Cu-organic complexes.

The concept of a continuous zinc smelting process which employs submerged combustion of coal char for both heating and reduction is described. An estimate of the results of smelting a marmatitic zinc concentrate indicates that both the operating and construction costs would be lower than those incurred in processes now in commercial operation. The results of smelting a complex zinc-copper concentrate are also estimated, but no simple commercial process exists with which they can be compared

The slags produced in copper smelting are largely composed of silica and ferrous oxide and may therefore be regarded as essentially ferrous silicates. A fair amount of information is available on the constitutions of the liquid slags used in copper smelting and, in this connection, the large volume of work being carried out on steelmaking slags should be helpful. Constitutional diagrams are available for most of the principal systems involved (SiO2-FeO; SiO2-FeO-Al2O 3; SiO2-FeO-CaO; SiO2-FeO- MgO; and SiO2-FeO-CaO-Al2O3) and these show that additions of Al2O3 and CaO reduce the freezing points of SiO2-FeO slags but that additions of MgO increase the freezing point. A certain amount of information is available on the thermodynamics of slags, but much further work on this subject is required. Modern theories of the constitution of liquid slags deny the existence of molecular compounds but consider that liquid slags are mixtures of various ions such as, Fe2+. O2- and SiO4(4-). The historical development of South Yorkshire mining is traced and note made of the liability to generate spontaneous combustion of some of the seams which have been worked. The liability factor is analysed firstly as an inherent property in the material of a coal seam, and secondly as a circumstance of a situation in which access is provided for the air necessary to sustain oxidation. The geological settings in which incidents of heatings have been known to occur is discussed and conditions favouring a natural pre-disposition to spontaneous oxidation exposed, particularly the effect of argillaceous material overlying the seam. An extensive strata-dynamic study follows to demonstrate the situations in which stray air currents tend to impinge on readily oxidizable material. Prevention techniques are indicated as the identification of strata-dynamic situations in which air access to broken coal is induced and thereafter th operational action to seal off the voids which have been opened up so as to exclude air from the broken coal. Measures to reduce the tendency for ventilating air to short circuit across waste voids, and to obviate deflection of air into packs are outlined. The importance of face and roadway design features is demonstrated and the consequences of practices inimical to good control of spontaneous combustion are related. Discussions on means of detection and also on the sealant materials available are included.

Equations for calculating the parameters of controlled blasting (burden and spacing of boreholes and weight of the bottom charge) are derived and analysed on the basis of empirical values and made more precise through incorporation of the properties of the rock being blasted and explosive applied. For the success of controlled blasting the correct choice of the blasthole diameter/charge diameter ratio is critical. This relation is defined as the coefficient of radial decoupling of the charge; it is recommended that it is chosen to be between 3 and 3.5. Analysis of smooth blasting, cushion blasting and presplitting indicates that cushion blasting is a less destructive alternative to smooth blasting, but it has a slightly higher blasthole consumption and limited possibilities of use. There are definite economic advantages to controlled blasting, especially in rock masses of low and medium strength

In pursuit of solving the development rate problem the coal industry has investigated various development systems. While all the systems may improve the development rate they may not necessarily he cost effective. This paper carries out an economic analysis by developing cost models for present and future development systems for retreating longwall faces with particular reference to Australian longwalls. A critical cost analysis of various development systems is presented by taking into consideration all the costs associated with development systems. The costs have been divided into equipment, face and panel services, belt and structure, wages, roof and rib support, ventilation, consumables, power and maintenance. The annualised cost of various equipment has been obtained on the basis of depreciation rates prescribed by the Australian Taxation Office.

New techniques for the continuous sampling and analysis of mine air are expected to replace traditional methods used for the early detection of spontaneous combustion. It has been established that the rate of evolution of carbon monoxide is the earliest indicator of incipient spontaneous combustion. Two methods of continuous monitoring of this gas are available and are now in use in the UK collieries. The first is the UNOR infra-red gas analyser, which is flameproof and may be used underground; the second is a system of tube bundles, which permits air to be drawn from any critical point in a colliery and analysed on the surface. Each system has its advantages and disadvantages but both provide the colliery manager with far more information on the condition of his pit than could previously be obtained by spot sampling and laboratory analysis. This paper describes the two systems presently in use and assesses likely future developments.

An analytical technique using computer-based multiple-regression methods was employed to determine the relation between the dust-producing index and inherent rock properties of typical samples from a coal-producing area, one of the aims being to provide a preliminary predictive tool for practical use. The investigation demonstrated that factors varied in their influence under different conditions, the brittleness:toughness ratio and the hardness being the most significant inherent properties with hardness showing the highest positive correlation coefficient

The paper presents the history of the occurrence of spontaneous combustion in the north area, together with the associated problems. These are examined and a description is given of the methods used to combat the danger, including the use of modern scientific instrumentation. Detailed reference is made to the underground trials with pack injection and sealant coatings which were carried out at Seafield Colliery following the formation of a working group to assess the performance, in the same underground conditions, of (1) sandbagging, (2) pack injection, (3) surface coating. Based on these trials, an improved and more economical method of prevention has been established. There is, however, still scope for further improvement in techniques which would take into account the problems of gradient, transport, manpower and cost.

The mineralogical composition of the ore was determined and the mineral phases with which nickel is associated were identified. The ore was prepared by grinding to -420 micrometres and classification into granulometric fractions. Prior to the main series of experiments the effect of agitation rate on nickel recovery was investigated. The influence of sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and particle size on the kinetics of nickel extraction was then studied, both quantitatively and qualitatively, over fixed value intervals. Application of the initial rate method enabled determination both of the order of reaction with respect to sulphuric acid concentration and the activation energy for the dissolution of nickel. The results indicate that a physical mechanism can be ruled out as the rate-determining step in the extraction of nickel from the ore and that a chemical mechanism is more likely

The production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) from its minerals such as ilmenite is challenging, and subsequent isolation of titanium from TiO2 is even more difficult because of the metal-oxygen bond strength. Currently, titanium sponge is mainly produced via the Kroll process, which is energy intensive and generates large quantities of waste. A number of international research groups have come up with technologies for the production of titanium metal. However, none of them have been commercialised, because of engineering or economic issues. The team at Bradford have confirmed that ultra-pure titanium powders can be separated from TiO2 powder through metallothermic reduction and are working to scale up the process.

British Coal's mining research programme is directed towards the strategic objectives of reducing production costs, improving product quality and resolving health, safety and environmental issues. The strategy for R&D is described and selected parts of the programme are reviewed. Two major initiatives are directed towards reducing production costs: geotechnics and automation. Integrated exploration techniques are used to delineate geological structures as an aid to mine planning. Rockbolting is being rapidly introduced and the in situ stress field has been found to be of significant influence. Automation is the subject of a major programme. A strategy for coal quality has been devised. The health, safety and environmental programme concentrates on the traditional hazards together with surface environmental problems.
