The electrowinning (EW) circuit involves using DC current in the electro-deposition of metal ions dissolved in an electrolyte solution. This paper reviews a method to generate an electrical model of an EW circuit and the resulting DC current flow and voltage distribution within the circuit. Topics include: calculations of electrolyte conductivity and the equivalent electrical resistance of the electrolyte within the electrolyte pipelines connected to the EW circuit; the breakdown and classification of the EW cell voltage into thermodynamic and ohmic potentials; methods to calculate current flow and voltage distribution throughout the EW circuit; and the development of an interactive visual computer model to simulate an actual EW circuit. Stray current can pose an electrical shock hazard to employees in electrolytic tankhouses. Increased awareness and understanding of the voltage distribution and potential stray current in an EW circuit can help mitigate the risk of tankhouse workers becoming exposed to electrical shock hazards. INTRODUCTION Copper electrowinning tankhouses include rectifiers that deliver large amount of DC current to a series of electrolytic cells consisting of electrolyte solution and electrode pairs. The design also includes metallic conductors in the circuit which include the rectifier’s positive and negative busbar, inter-cell busbar, and the anode and cathode frames. The electrolyte acts as an electrical conductor that transfers current via ions between the anodic and cathodic electrodes within the cell. Electrolyte, as a conductor, is also capable of conducting DC current outside the main EW circuit through the connected electrolyte feed and return pipe systems. DC current that follows a path other than the intended path through the series of electrolytic cells is referred to as “stray current”. Developing an electrical model enhances understanding of voltage distribution and current flow in an EW circuit. This paper discusses the derivation of the various representative components of the model as well as the output from the model. An interactive visual computer simulation incorporates the model output in order to aid in the understanding of voltage distribution and current flow throughout the EW circuit.

This paper outlines the principles of friction hoisting and the components involved, and gives a description of a specific mine hoist. Friction hoisting is compared with conventional drum hoisting, and the depth of shaft at which friction hoists become more economical than drum hoists, with respect to power consumption, is determined. Introduction T HE purpose of this paper is to outline the principles of friction hoisting, to describe the components and to show the advantages of multi-rope friction hoisting. Some calculations are made to show that the power requirements and the initial costs of friction hoists are less than those of conventional drum hoists, once a certain depth of shaft has been reached. The use of multi-rope friction hoists is gradually superseding the employment of the conventional drum hoist in many parts of the world. It results in heavier payloads from deeper levels, an increase in shaft safe-ty and a more compact installation for protection against adverse weather conditions. "A colorimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determination in a series of industrial campaigns. Some frother observations are described, including: concentration evolution down a bank, distribution between pulp and froth phases, and a mass balance around a circuit. Minute amounts of frother in recycle water were also measured.The contribution of frother and alcohol by-products in the analysis was generally additive for plants using aliphatic alcohol type frothers and decoupled for systems using glycols. Typically, U250C (polyglycol) was used at higher concentration (>10 ppm) than MIBC (aliphatic alcohol) (<10 ppm) or F-150 (polyglycol) (<3ppm).The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimization of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimize the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.INTRODUCTIONOwing to the lack of analytical methods, the task of determining frother concentration in plant flotation circuits is not routinely performed. Industrial sites seldom outsource analyses that are both costly and inconvenient, due to the necessity of shipping freeze-dried samples to remote testing facilities. A more direct colorimetric method has recently been demonstrated for the laboratory characterization of common industrial frothers (Gélinas and Finch, 2004). The approach, based on the Komarowsky reaction (Penniman et al., 1936; Coles et al., 1942; Duke, 1947), was previously described by Parkhomovski et al. (1976) for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC). The reaction involves the interaction of the OH group of a higher alcohol, concentrated sulphuric acid, and salicylaldehyde, to yield coloured solutions with intensities that can be analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry."

"IntroductionThe Bienfait Mine is operated by Bienfait Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar Limited group of companies. Situated 5 km southeast of the town of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, it can produce 2.0 million tonnes of lignite annually in addition to 158,000 tonnes of char from a carbonization plant located on the property. Geology The economically mineable coal seams of the Estevan area are found in the Ravenscrag Formation. The lignite-bearing sands, silts and clays were deposited in Early Tertiary age, in an inland sea centred in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. The top of the Ravenscrag is an erosional surface, overlain by Tertiary or Quarternary sands and gravels or glacial till. The regional structure is a gently plunging syncline which dips to the southeast at about 0.3 degrees. There are minor undulations in the Bienfait area which are due to differential subsidence during deposition. Sporadic faulting is probably a result of glacial pressures, and preglacial and glacial channels are responsible for washout zones and the abrupt irregular subcrop found in the area. There are two economic coal seams in the Bienfait area, an uppe; seam locally known as the Roche Percee, and a lower seam, the Estevan. Both seams have been extensively mined since lignite mining began in the area in the late 1800s. The Roche Percee remains only in a small portion of the Bienfait Mine and comprises a very minor portion of the reserves. It averages 1.74 m thick under 8.1 m of overburden. The till rests on top of the Roche Percee and due to weathering the seam is generally of poorer quality. The Estevan seam comprises the majority of reserves at Bienfait. The main seam which is being worked on consists of an upper bench averaging 2.75 m, a carbonaceous parting of 0.21 m, and a lower bench of 0.92 m. Overburden depth above this seam varies from 21.0 m to 38.0 m."

"Mining of low grade deposits along with the necessity to design and operate process plants requiring high throughputs presents unique metallurgical environmental and sustainability challenges that need to be addressed to reduce project risks, improve project economics and to sustain the profitability of operations over the life-of-mine.Some of the key challenges include poor recovery of valuables and concentrate quality issues due to complex mineralogy and high ore variability, water scarcity and quality issues, high energy costs, complex environmental issues including tailings management, high capital and operating costs, worldwide constraints on resource availability, complicated regulations in emerging economies, changing demographics of mining operations with ever-changing cultural or community issues and the urgent need for a better assessment of project viability to reflect the dynamics of present mining scenario. Developing breakthrough solutions to these problems is the key to success of any new project and maintaining profitability of a mining operation. An integrated multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving is crucial along with the need for a more lateral thinking, strategic partnerships and collaboration involving the right players. This paper presents some of the key findings based on experiences from a large number of challenging projects and operations focused on solving complex metallurgical problems.IntroductionThere is a plethora of challenges in developing new ore bodies. The metallurgical complexity of these deposits has increased significantly due to the need for mining lower grade ores along with the presence of deleterious elements that have environmental and processing implications. In addition, many of the mining projects are capital intensive due to high throughput requirements to be economical along with the need for building infrastructure due to remote locations, while operating costs steadily increase due to high reagent, energy and labour costs, increased state royalties and community obligations, to name a few of the key factors. There is also scarcity of water in many regions requiring the use of sea water or brackish water, which has both environmental and metallurgical implications. The shortage of qualified technical manpower adds significantly to the woes of many mining companies. Considering these multiplicity of challenges, it has become imperative for many mining companies to be innovative in addressing these issues."

"Difficulties arise in implementing environmental technologies in the mining sector because important fundamental processes, which lead to the environmental degradation, are ignored. Weathering rates, the role of bacteria in the process and the incomplete application of the matching principle of accounting at the time the mining disturbance take place. Mining is a multi-stakeholder activity and the environmental problems have multivariate dimensions also effecting process.The limiting factors in the contaminant generation process are the transport of oxygen by advection, convection or diffusion in air or water and the associated microbial activity. Weathering products are transported from the mineral surface by atmospheric precipitation to surface and groundwater. This contamination takes place at different rates, requiring a long time to evaluate technological choices.Restoration efforts have to focus on slow reaction rates in the contaminant generating processes. Technology, which does not address the reaction rates and is selected based on inappropriate time scales, will not provide long-term solutions. Natural approaches to reduce acid generation, based on Ecological Engineering principles have required decades of research and field testing, but now show promise in addressing the cause of AMD and ameliorating its effects."

The production of ferronickel and matte from nickel laterite ores is dominated by the Rotary Kiln, Electric Furnace (RKEF) process. Over time, major improvements have been made to kiln operation. In particular, kilns are now required to perform substantial amounts of reduction of the metallic oxides, thereby reducing the load on the electric furnace and substituting less expensive fossil fuel for electrical energy. To the basic refractory lined cylinder have been added: internal features such as dams and lifters, aimed at changing residence times in different sections of the kiln and enhancing gas/solids interaction, on-board fans to introduce tertiary air and on-board scoop mechanisms to allow reductant coal additions to be made at advantageous locations along the kiln. Many of these advances in design have been made on a trial and error basis and by &apos;borrowing&apos; technology from related kiln processes, supplemented by proprietary modeling to various levels of sophistication. This paper presents a conceptual review of modeling components for the development of a computational model for granular material flow, combustion and heat and mass transfer in a nickel laterite kiln. These components include: granular material flow and segregation models for the simulation of bed motion, heat transfer models that simulate heat transfer by turbulent diffusion and radiation and the distribution of this thermal energy within the bed, and fluid flow models for the prediction of combustion aerodynamics.

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. The operating work index of this circuit varied from 5.2 kWh/t to 44 kWh/t over this 5 year period. The full suite of energy curves"

Expanding world economic prosperity, probable peaking of conventional petroleum production in the coming decades and environmental concerns require efforts to increase the efficiency of, and the development of alternatives to, petroleum-based fuels used in automotive transportation. In January 2002, the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and the U.S. Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) of the "Big Three" traditionally-USA-based automakers, DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors, formed the Freedom Cooperative Automotive Research (FreedomCAR) Partnership to fund high-risk, high-payoff research into advanced automotive technologies with the potential for eventually lowering the USA&apos;s nearly complete (95%) dependence on petroleum, 55% imported, for its transportation fuels. FreedomCAR replaced the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) which existed from 1993 to 2001. In January 2003, the energy-supply industry joined with the FreedomCAR Partnership forming the FreedomCAR and Fuel Initiative (FC&FI) to develop the technologies needed for the mass production of fuel-cell vehicles using hydrogen as fuel and the infrastructure needed to deliver the hydrogen to the consumer. The goal is to enable the automotive and energy-supply industries to make commercialization decisions in 2015 on large-scale introduction of such vehicles and on developing the infrastructure beginning in 2020. In addition to work on fuel cells and hydrogen infrastructure, the FC&FI conducts research on technologies with the potential for nearer-term energy efficiency and environmental benefits, such as new engine concepts, lightweight materials, and engine-electric hybrid propulsion systems. Lightweighting is seen as crucial for shorter and for longer term benefits because hybrid and fuel-cell powertrains are expected, at least in the early stages of adoption, to be heavier and more costly per unit of power than the standard internal-combustion, gasoline- or diesel-fueled powertrains they replace. Research and development (R&D) on casting of aluminum automotive components were major parts of the PNGV and R&D on casting of magnesium automotive components have been and are so under FreedomCAR. This presentation will review those efforts.

"The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. Les plis P2 et P3 sont coaxiaux et sont replissés en dômes et bassins par les plis P4. Les zones minéralisées sont subparallèles aux plans axiaux des plis P2. "This paper examines the development of two new selective flocculation techniques for recovering KCI values from low grade carnallite potash ore.Direct recovery of KCI was achieved using one of two mid-range molecular weight polymers, one non-ionic and the other strongly cationic, in conjunction with the same selective anionic dispersant. From initial response studies on pure minerals and selective flocculation tests on synthetic mixtures, investigations were extended to recover KCI values from a natural carnallite potash ore. A single-stage process achieved products grading up to 61.3% KCI at recoveries up to 85.4% for the cationic flocculant suite and up to 64.8% KCI with recoveries as high as 90.3% for the non-ionic flocculant suite, with dispersant and flocculant dosages of 150-250gr1 and 10-75gr1, respectively. These results clearly demonstrate not only the feasibility of treating such problematic ores at low reagent dosages, but also the potential elimination of desliming prior to froth flotation.The experimental results presented are considered in terms of the reagent adsorption phenomena present in the system and various aspects of floe formation and cleaning.IntroductionAs high-grade sylvinite potash ores become scarce, lower grade sylvinite and carnallite potash ores are becoming more attractive. However, these ores often contain large amounts (up to 15% by weight) of water-insoluble slimes which must be removed prior to KC! flotation, owing to their high adsorptive capacity for the amine collectors used. The slimes are generally removed by scrubbing followed by hydroclassification and any residual material not eliminated is blinded with reagents such as guar gum or starch to inhibit interference in subsequent KC1 flotation.An alternative approach used commercially in Canada by Agrium Inc. involves water-insoluble slimes flotation prior to KC! flotation. In this process, the slimes are selectively flocculated and then separated by froth flotation. Losses of KC! to the slimes product and associated brine requirements are both reported to be less than those encountered in conventional desliming, but the technique is somewhat limited in its application at present."

The Freeport McMoRan El Paso Refinery uses co-generation to produce some of its electricity and all of its steam. This paper will cover the operation of the co-generation plant natural gas turbine at a fixed RPM for blade longevity and energy output. The by-product heat from the turbine passes through boilers with additional heat from a duct burner to produce steam for the Tank House and auxiliary operations. The steam demand varies dramatically throughout the day based on unloading activities in the Tank House. The use of an automated steam control system within the El Paso Refinery will help stabilize line pressure by incrementally controlling steam consumption based on electrolyte temperature. This will minimize steam line pressure fluctuations. INTRODUCTION In the mid 1920’s the Nichols Copper Company of Laurel Hill, New York recognized the need for a modern copper refining facility in the southwest. Due to the many railroad heads, affordable power and abundant labor supply, and the close proximity to regional copper smelters in Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico, El Paso became the logical location. In December 1928, ground was broken for the joint venture refinery between the Nichols Copper Company, Phelps Dodge, and the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company. In September 1930, Nichols Copper Company became a part of Phelps Dodge Corporation after a stock exchange. In July 1938, Nichols Division officially became Phelps Dodge Refining Corporation. In March 2007, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold acquired Phelps Dodge. Energy costs (electrical and thermal) are critically important in the viability of modern copper electrorefineries. The El Paso Refinery produces electricity and steam through its cogeneration system. The El Paso cogeneration facility is a natural gas, 15-megawatt facility containing five turbine generators and associated waste heat recovery boilers. The facility is divided into two phases. Phase I consists of two Allison 2.2-megawatt turbine generators. Phase II consists of three Solar Taurus 3.5-megawatt turbine generators. Presently three units in Phase II are operated. The Phase I units were purchased and installed in 1986 and the Phase II units in 1992 (Solar 1991). The facility operated at full capacity until 2003 when steam demand was significantly reduced due to decrease in cathode production and closure of the copper sulfate and precious metal operations. Phase I units were taken out of service and put on care and maintenance status.

Medium carbon, low alloy, high-strength steels containing Ni, Cr, and Mo are used for the fabrication of various types of high-strength fasteners required for launch vehicle structures. Cold heading properties and response to hardening and tempering are the essential requirements of the material for fabrication and application, respectively. Combining these two requirements is essentially warranted in high-strength fastener-grade steels. Cold heading properties require ductility, which can be achieved through spheroidizing treatments. In the absence of a suitable spheroidizing cycle for medium carbon 3.8 Ni, 1.8 Cr, 0.3 Mo steel, experiments were carried out with a theoretical understanding of the alloy system. This paper presents the experiments and results obtained after a spheroidizing treatment, which was carried out to optimize the process. Hardness measurements were carried out and microstructural studies were conducted to assess the spheroidization process and to determine the optimal spheroidization parameters.

"The Carswell structure, located in the western part of the Athabasca Basin, northern Saskatchewan, has been extensively explored since 1967. This exploration has been successful and lead to the discovery, in 1970, of the D sandstone-hosted unconformity related deposit. By the end of 1984, five additional basement-hosted unconformity related deposits had been delineated: the OP and N discovered in 1970, the Claude in 1971, the Dominique-Peter in 1981, and the Dominique-Janine in 1984. The D deposit has been mined out; the Claude open-pit has already produced more than 500 tonnes of uranium, the development of the Dominique-Peter underground mine (first phase) has been completed, and production from the latter started in 1985.All six deposits are located in the southern part of the Aphebian metamorphic core, 18 km in diameter, which has intruded at least 1250 metres of Helikian Athabasca Group sediments during a cryptoexplosion event at 480 Ma, unrelated to the emplacement of uranium mineralization. The metamorphic rocks, affected by the Hudsonian Orogeny, are divided in two lithostratrigraphic units: the Peter River gneiss, aluminous gneiss series, and the Earl River complex, mixed quartzofeldspathic and mafic gneiss series. A well developed regolith profile is recognizable in the south along the contact with the sandstone and inside the metamorphic core sometimes associated with conformable sandstone beds.Basement and sandstone-hosted uranium deposits show many similarities:-linkage to unconformity;-mineralogy and geochronology with a first phase mineralization characterized by a polymetallic sulphide-uraninite-brannerite assemblage dated at 1150 to 1050 Ma, a second phase characterized by a simple sulphide-uraninite assemblage dated at 890 to 820 Ma, and a third phase characterized by a pitchblende-hematite dated at 380 Ma; and,-linkage to early Hudsonian structures with remobilization of these structures during intense hydrothermal alteration resulting in Mg chlorite-illite halos."

"While pipeline hydrotransport is often the most economical way to transport large volumes of mineral concentrate, tailings, or fine ore slurry over long distances, it is in mountainous terrain that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These areas are often remote, with limited existing infrastructure and few potential users willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction of railways or roads suitable for haul trucks difficult and expensive. The elevation difference between the mine and the terminal means that the empty trains or haul trucks need to return up-hill, resulting in high fuel costs. With pipelines, this elevation difference may reduce or even eliminate the need for pumping. As a result, numerous pipelines have been built, or are being considered, in mountainous regions around the world including: Tasmania, New Guinea, China, Madagascar, the Rockies of North America, and the Andes of South America. However, there are technical difficulties that need to be overcome in the design and operation of mountain pipelines that do not affect pipelines on more level terrain. This presentation reviews some of these difficulties and methods used to overcome them.INTRODUCTIONPipeline transport of solid-liquid slurry (“hydrotransport”) is an important and cost-effective means of transporting large volumes of solids over long distances, especially from a single supplier to a single user (e.g., a concentrator to a port, a concentrator to a tailings dam, or a coal mine to a power plant). Pipelines are generally found to be more economically attractive than alternate transportation methods (e.g. trucking, rail, conveyors, shipping, or some combination) over the life of a project (Aude et al. 1974).Hydrotransport systems have been built in a variety of terrains, but it is in mountainous regions that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These regions are often remote and generally do not have existing transportation infrastructure (roads, railways, navigable rivers). There are few potential users (e.g., farmers, other mines, forestry companies, etc.) who may be willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction and maintenance of railways or all weather roads suitable for large haul trucks difficult and expensive. "The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. Proven and probable reserves at December 31, 1997 were at 4.04 million tonnes at 4.6 g/t and underground exploration continues to confirm the extension of the ore zones to depth."

"The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals in the hope of understanding the reasons for poor performance when it occurs, and developing mitigating strategies.This testwork along with a review of the relevant literature has demonstrated that the amount of sulphide added to the primary reactor, relative to the copper concentration, is the most critical parameter dictating plant performance, with pH and residence time important secondary factors. The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. Testwork shows that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. The theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are likely to experience growth in crystal particle size through aggregation rather than heterogeneous nucleation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome. The result of testwork that is reported here lends credence to this theory and questions the wisdom of recycling in the SART process.There is evidence to suggest that operating the copper sulphide thickener in the SART Process without flocculants may be beneficial. Thickener underflow densities could improve from the current 10 - 15% range to 40 - 50%. This will not only reduce the flowrate of slurry to the filter, but the filtration properties of the slurry (filtration rate, filter cake moisture content) will also improve. This is one of the most critical engineering and design aspects of the SART Process, and the achievement of high solids density in the thickener underflow will not only improve the health and safety aspects of the operation, but also has the potential to lower capital costs and improve the quality of the final product."
