Confronted with this prevailing attitude, Canada's mining industry starts out with two strikes against it in its bid to attract and hold on to its fair share of available work force.Behavioural scientists have, for decades, been seeking answers to the questions:• ""Why do people work?""• ""Why do people choose a particular occupation?""• ""Why do people choose a particular organization?""• ""Why do people leave one organization for another?""• ""Why do some people stay in an organization?""• ""Why do some people work harder than others?""Their answers to these questions, although tentative and often contradictory, are being used by more and more organizations to solve people problems. Few industries can afford to ignore them, least of all, perhaps, the mining industry.Consider the following developments:I. General Motors and the United Auto Workers turn around the car assembly plant in Tarrytown, New York in seven years from the plant with the poorest labour relations and production record to one of the best under a program referred to as ""improving the quality of work life.""2. Shell Canada and the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers have designed a new petro-chemical processing plant in Sarnia using a set of principles that seek to optimize both the social and the technical system."

"The decision to proceed with mine decommissioning, generally involves a number of complex and independent factors. These factors, including potential for re-opening, legal requirements, contingent liability, asset depreciation, due diligence, and public relations are discussed in the context of the financial implications on a net-present- value basis. It is concluded that the decision to delay mine decommissioning is commonly not in the best financial interests of the mine operator. Some measures to reduce decommissioning costs and expedite the process are presented.IntroductionThe primary audience for this paper is mining executives, although it should be of interest to all professionals involved in the planning and carrying out of mine decommissioning. Historically, mines were abandoned, not decommissioned. Then, as decommissioning became required, it was assumed that salvage revenue would pay for decommissioning. During the I980s, it became apparent that mine decommissioning costs would exceed salvage revenue for nearly all sites, and that a substantial net cost for decommissioning would be realized for some sites. Throughout this period, the approach to decommissioning has evolved through the sequential addition of measures to meet the increasing regulatory burden. This has resulted in a process in which the elements of decommissioning may not be optimized with respect to each other for the most favourable net present value to the corporation. Additional considerations which are not specific to mine decommissioning, such as environmental policy, due diligence and public relations, may now come to bear on the decision-making process.This paper addresses the issue of mine decommissioning as a three-step process. The first step involves identification and evaluation of all of the issues that relate to mine closure, the most importantof which is the potential for re-opening of a mine. Assuming that it is decided that a mine is unlikely to re-open, the second step is to determine when to carry out the decommissioning work. This aspect is examined through a net present value (NPV) approach. Finally, details regarding who does the work and how the various tasks are divided up must be resolved.Every mine is a unique concentration of minerals at some specific location, hence the development, operation and closure of a given mine must be regarded as a special case. Superimposed on the site-specific considerations are the size, history and financial status of the associated corporation."

"Av. Bases de Manresa 61-63, Manresa (08242) Barcelona, SpainTantalum is a strategic metal and an improvement of the mineral processing is an important issue. The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). "Recovering pyrite from the gangue with high sulfur content is of great significance for both economic development and environment protection in China. Due to the global water shortage and high cost in wet separation processes, it is urgent to explore more efficient energy and water conservation method in mineral processing field. This study has proposed an innovative method based on density difference for fine pyrite enrichment by vibration fluidized bed. In this study, the total sulfur content (TSC) of the gangue sample is 19.18%, and the pyrite is disseminated with fine granularity in the gangue which should be crushed for dissociation. The combination and dissociation experiment of -6mm gangue shows that the dominant density of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm comminuted material is +2.9g/cm3. Based on the analysis of characteristic, the effects of various factors on the separation performance were experimental studied. The results show that gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height all have the significant effects. With the increases of superficial gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height, the separation performance all presents a decreasing tendency. Additionally, the TSC of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm materials are respectively up to 37.94% , 35.43% and 30.61% at the optimum conditions, which are the 1.72?1.90 and 2.29 times as much as the TSC of raw material, respectively. This study demonstrates the vibrated fluidized bed can recovery pyrite from the gangue effectively.INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing mining and separation of coal, the yield of gangue has a further growth tendency, which has become one of the largest reserves of industrial waste (Querol et al., 2008). However, many harmful elements, such as S?NOx and Hg, is existed in the gangue leading the serious damage to the soil and environment (Hao, Yun, Zhanyuan, Sen, & Song, 2013). In addition, the economic would be suffered from the loss resulting in the occupied of arable land caused by the accumulation of gangue (Yeheyis, Shang, & Yanful, 2009; Zhou, Liu, Yan, Fang, & Wang, 2012). Therefore, the government has put forward the policies of ""green mining"" in China (Xing & Gao, 2009; R. Zhang, Ai, Zhou, Ju, & Zhang, 2015; Zheng, Du, Li, Qiu, & Yang, 2015). Among different research areas of coal utilization, extracting the useful minerals has become one of hot topics (Ledin & Pedersen, 1996; P. Patra & Natarajan, 2003; Partha Patra & Natarajan, 2004). At present, many researchers has devoted to the desulfurization of coal all over the world. As result, the sulfur element, which is mainly existed in the presence of pyrite, would transferred in the tailings, namely the gangue. Meanwhile, the pyrite is important raw materials to produce rubber, paper, textile and match. Consequently, recovering the pyrite from the gangue is not only suitable to the requirement of ""green mining"", but it could turn the waste into the treasure having the important significance."

Irradiation of high energy ultrasonic vibration in metals and alloys generates oscillating strain and stress fields in solids, and introduces nonlinear effects such as cavitation, acoustic streaming, and radiation pressure in molten materials. These nonlinear effects can be utilized to assist conventional material processing processes. This article describes recent research at Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) and Purdue University on using high intensity ultrasonic vibrations for degassing molten aluminum, processing particulate reinforced metal matrix composites, refining metals and alloys during solidification process, welding, and producing bulk nanostructures in solid metals and alloys.

"This paper examines unpredictability in the parameters governing hydraulic fracturing (HF) as used in stress amelioration for underground excavations, with the aim of showing how this unpredictability may affect design decisions. Using uncertainty models that are appropriate to particular levels of information and degrees of uncertainty, this paper demonstrates how these can aid in decision-making related to feasibility assessments of HF arrays for stress amelioration.Cave mining operations produce large underground voids and high stress concentrations around critical mine locations. These stress concentrations increase the potential for rock burst events. Although de-stress blasting has a long history for redistributing high stress concentrations, to improve safety and reliability HF is now being trialled as an alternative.Unfortunately the HF process is extremely uncertain, and so predicting fracture propagation geometry is difficult. Although the major parameters governing HF propagation have been previously identified, no indication has been given regarding the contribution that uncertainty in these makes to unpredictability in the overall HF system. Using simplified models of HF and referencing a recently proposed characterization of unpredictability, we relate unpredictability in the various governing parameters to the effect it has on strain energy density (SED) in the surrounding rock. Within these models we analyse SED as well as the stress intensity factor (KIc) when investigating the effect of parameter uncertainty and its influence on various crack propagation criteria (Sih & Macdonald, 1974). These models are applicable to unpredictability associated with the development of new fractures; the case of pre-existing fractures is the subject of on-going work.The paper will assess in greater detail the various governing parameters, and investigate the appropriate use of other uncertainty models. As a result, we will show how assessment of uncertainty in HF parameters can be used to both guide feasibility studies and determine the optimal allocation of resources to improve the final design."

"Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd, Laronde Division, is a gold operation processing ore containing copper and zinc. Copper is recovered as a concentrate prior to gold cyanidation.Copper concentrate grade was improved with the implementation of an on-stream analyzer. Further improvements to the copper concentrate grade could be achieved throughefficient zinc depression.High cyanide cost linked to the copper content in the flotation circuit tails, prompted some modifications to the flotation circuit. Economics and environmental issues were considered. A Maxwell cell was retrofitted with an Outokumpu HG cell mechanism stabilizing it's operation. Secondly a flotation column was added to increase circuit capacity.This paper will address flotation circuit operation difficulties, successes and results achieved before and after modifications.RESUMELes Mines Agnico-Eagle division Laronde sont considéré comme étant un producteur d'or. Le minerai révèle toutefois des teneurs appréciables en cuivre et zinc. Un circuit de traitement combinant des étapes de flottation du cuivre et de cyanuration de l'or a été adopte. Le rejet de la flottation est lixivie pour son contenu en or.La teneur moyenne en cuivre du concentre final fut augmentée suite a l'implantation d'un système d'analyse en continu. Une séparation plus efficace de la sphalérite se devra d'être obtenue afin d'améliorer davantage la qualité du concentre produit.Le contenu en cuivre au rejet du circuit de flottation influence directement la consommation en cyanure. Pour cette raison, certaines modifications à la flottation sont devenues nécessaires. Des facteurs d'ordre économique et environnemental ont été considérées. These differences have given rise to a number of different royalty type s. These types range from the simplest cents-per-ton royalty (where the operator pays a royalty at a fixed rate per ton milled) to net smelter return or ""NSR"" royalties (where the royalty is based on a percentage of the operator's NSR) all the way to net profit interest or ""NPI"" royalties (where the royalty is based on the operator's bottom-line net profit),The fundamental difference between the many royalty types is in the risk/ return relationship. The cents-per-ton royalty, for example, is relatively risk-free. Of the many economic factors which affect a mine, the only one which will affect the royalty holder is the amount of ore physically milled. "The different types of nano to submicron particles, which are well-dispersed nano particles, coagulated nano particles or settled submicron particles, have been measured by the interactive force apparatus (IFA). The information is very useful for mineral processing treatment. The IFA can measure the particle size distribution in low to high concentration of particles in liquids and non-light transparent liquids. Here, mainly the emulsion and bubble size measurements are described.Emulsion (w/o type) is prepared with oil and water mixture. The nano to micro emulsion particle size is usually measured by light scattering method. The particle size distribution of emulsion of light oil measured by IFA agreed well with the one by the dynamic light scattering (DLS) method. The water size distribution in emulsions of gasoline is difficult for the small reflection index and C heavy oil is difficult for the black color by DLS method. The IFA can measure both emulsions.There are many methods to measure fine air bubbles, however, the finer nano size measurement apparatuses are DLS method and IFA. A “ghost” peak appeared in the large particle micron meter size in DLS method. The mean diameter in IFA is similar with DLS for the nano meter size. INTRODUCTIONParticle size distribution measurement of nano to submicron particle, emulsion and bubble size distribution are very useful for ultrafine particle separation and characterization of fine particles by the necessity of recent fine minerals separation (For example, Li et al.2016, Mikhlin et al.2016, Wang et al.2013). As for the size measurement of solid particles in liquids, three different types of nano to submicron particles, that are well-dispersed nano particles, coagulated nano particles or settled submicron particles, have been measured by the interactive force apparatus (IFA). The particle size distributions are compared with the one of dried particles measured by TEM or SEM. The well-dispersed nano particle size distribution by IFA is influenced by the nano size surfactant micelles and becomes smaller, when compared with the TEM result. The size distribution of nano size of magnetite particles in water is influenced by the isoelectric point and the mean diameter of coagulation becomes larger. The particle coagulation in diluted suspension is about 2nm smaller when compared with the higher concentration. The submicron nickel particle size distribution is well agreed the result by SEM. The coagulation effect is small in the submicron size of nickel powder in water (Fujita et al., 2013). In this paper, the emulsion and bubble size measurements are mainly described."

"A comparison of diesel engine power ratings with in-service capability, and the selection of unit size and total number of units are discussed in the paper. Engine specific fuel consumption and its evaluation in relation to manufacturers' tolerances and equipment load factors is reviewed along with the suitable plant layout. The potential for heat recovery is discussed in connection with simple and operable recovery systems f or exhaust and cooling circuits. Maintenance standards as related to improved reliability and reduced fuel and operating costs are also outlined. IntroductionDiesel generators are used in Canadian mining operations to provide electrical power for "" base- load"" requirements in some instances and for ""stand-by"" or ""emergency"" power in almost every producing mine in the country . There are over 300 mines in Canada of which only a handful have to generate their own electricity. Only one or two mine s enjoy access to a hydroelectric site. Consequently, the diesel engine is the principal prime mover because of its high efficiency relative to other prime movers in the size range in question.The author has been associated with several “base-load” plants in addition to participation in numerous projects requiring emergency diesel generators. Records indicate that engine performance in term s of reliability and efficiency lags behind other industries where the diesel engine is used more extensively, such as the shipping industry which is able to make a more prudent selection of original equipment and enjoy easy access to highly skilled operating and maintenance personnel. It is hoped that the contents of this paper will be of value to Canadian operators of diesel generators, in the generation of prime power or applications for back-up power."

In the decade 2002 to 2012 some 6.7 million tonnes of new copper concentrate production capacity was brought on line, corresponding to 2 million tonnes of contained copper. This increase in concentrate supply necessitated the commissioning of a number of new copper smelters as well as the modernization and/or expansion of existing plants to meet the demand. This paper gives an overview of the copper extractive industry, reviews recent copper production trends and changes in the copper industry, including an examination of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical technology developments. WorleyParsons has supported a number of the projects involved in these developments and this role is briefly discussed. The paper introduces a number of ideas related to possible future directions of the copper industry.

"Mineral processing and smelting operations have the reputation of being complex processes. Process operators of these unit operations have acquired from experience and basic training a superficial understanding of the relationships between process output and manipulated variables. This understanding, which is a very valuable know-how for process control and optimization as well as for operator training, is however difficult to extract. This paper describes a time series based approach that can be used to extract this know-how, which can subsequently be used for operator training. The method is illustrated with an example taken from a smelting process.IntroductionThe emergence of Total Quality Management and Statistical Process Control philosophies in the North American industry (Brown, 1991 ), as well as the increasing popularity of the IS0- 900x standard accreditation, provide a strong incentive to review the training procedures for plant operators. The importance of employees training is acknowledged in two of the 14 points of Deming's road to quality (Deming, 1982) as well as by control engineering consultants (Hendricks et al., 1994). However guidelines for the operation of industrial processes are often transferred from an operator to another one with allowance for flexible interpretation of many operating rules. Such transfer is typical of complex industrial processes to which particulate processes of ore dressing and extractive metallurgy belong.Capturing the knowledge of experienced operators is often a difficult task. Cognition engineers are able to extract this knowledge and transfer it into rules that ultimately are implemented into expert systems. Cognition engineers are however not always available and plant supervisors may prefer to keep training as an internal liability. Another difficulty through interviewing of the process operator is its lack of willingness to transfer what he has learned by hard working to other people, whose ultimate goals are to develop computerized applications that may replace him in a near future, or reduce its importance in the production line.This paper shows that time series can be advantageously used to capture the average process understanding of plant operators and to help reviewing training procedures. The method s illustrated with data collected during normal operation of electric arc furnaces and it is shown how the approach has led to a fruitful discussion between process engineers and operators that ultimately provided savings of more that $200,000 per year per furnace. There are 9 furnaces in the studied foundry. Such savings are not the results of application of advanced control strategies nor of ""miracle press button software», but of an improve awareness by engineers and operators of the importance of properly defining the operating procedures to control a process."

"A key part of plant design is the selection of the design tonnage which is the hourly tonnage target that the equipment selection is based on. Its selection is critical for ensuring that the nominal tonnage which is critical to the financial performance of the project will be met. With deposits being developed at lower grades, higher tonnages and a higher degree of hardness variability, it is essential to ensure that the design process selects the comminution equipment which will be able to deal with the impact of this ore quality variation.Ore hardness and its variance are key factors to be taken into consideration for the selection of the design tonnage. It is well accepted that for the nominal or name plate tonnage to be consistently achieved, it is necessary to base the design tonnage on a hardness value greater than the average ore hardness of the deposit to be mined. The question is how much greater should this design value be to ensure that the nominal tonnage is met to the satisfaction of the project financial model. Standard industry practice is to set the design tonnage by:1. Select an ore hardness percentile that is greater than the average ore hardness to be the basis of the nominal tonnage. Typically either the 75th or 80th percentile value from the data set will be selected.2. Selection of a design factor to multiply by for determining the design tonnage, i.e. the design tonnage = tonnage (based on the average ore hardness) multiplied by design factor.This paper discusses the selection of the design ore hardness through the use of modelling or the use of a design factor. It further shows the impact of ore hardness variance on the capacity of the process and its ability to meet the nominal tonnage. Insight is provided as to what ore hardness percentile value should be selected balancing the shortfalls of tonnage for ores harder than the design value versus the above target production achieved for ores softer than the design ore hardness."

"Extractive metallurgy was divided into the three sectors pyro-, hydro-, and electrometallurgy in 1959 when Professor Joseph Newton at the Idaho School of Mines in Moscow mentioned this in his book Extractive Metallurgy. Pioneer hydrometallurgists who built this discipline can be traced to the alchemists in the ninth century. It is now a mature subject of great importance in which pressure plays a vital role. Short biographies of some hydrometallurgists and the processes they invented are briefly outlined.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy is the use of aqueous solutions to recover metals from ores. It is a relatively new discipline when compared with pyrometallurgy the use of fire to melt ores and recover metals which was practiced in ancient times. Hydrometallurgy can be traced to the time of alchemists whose concern was the transmutation of base metals into gold. Although alchemists did not succeed in their venture yet they described many reagents that are useful today. For example, they prepared sulfuric acid by distillation of iron vitriol, muriatic acid by distillation of sulfuric acid with salt, and nitric acid by reaction of sulfuric acid by reaction of sulfuric acid with salpeter. Jabir Ibn Hayyan the Muslim alchemist who lived in the ninth century (Figure 1) described aqua regia a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid that can dissolve gold although either acid has no action on gold. THE MIDDLE AGESIn the Middle Ages, it was reported that copper was recovered at Rio Tinto in Spain by allowing copper-containing pyrite to be exposed in piles to the action of air and rain. Copper sulfate solution obtained was treated with pieces of iron to precipitate metallic copper—a process that was called cementation. Georgius Agricola (1494–1555) (Figure 2) a medical doctor in Saxony who used to visit mines and smelters to examine miners and metal workers, described in his book De Re Metallica the parting of gold, i.e., separating of silver from gold by acids."

A magnesium alloy modeled after commercial alloy WE54 was thermomechanically processed and characterized to understand the mechanisms by which its texture can be randomized, as reported by Ball and Prangnell [1]. Samples were deformed in plane strain compression to prescribed strain levels at temperatures high enough to prevent cracking and then recrystallized. The deformation texture is very similar to that observed after plane strain compression (e.g., rolling) of other Mg alloys, such as common AZ31. However, the texture can radically evolve during recrystallization. Annealing above the precipitate solvus temperature results in a nearly random recrystallization texture where the initially strong basal texture is completely eliminated. Annealing below the solvus temperature produces a recrystallized texture similar to conventional Mg alloys, i.e., a weakened basal texture. If this same material is then annealed above the solvus to promote grain growth, a randomized texture evolves, which is similar that of samples simply recrystallized above the solvus. It is hypothesized that a sort of preferred growth mechanism, whereby grains with random orientation grow faster than those with the original basal texture, contributes significantly to the texture randomization observed in wrought magnesium alloys containing rare earth elements.

Production of advanced linepipe steels with strength levels of 685MPa (100ksi) and higher requires excellent control of runout table cooling to produce the desired final fine-grained microstructures, which may include acicular ferrite. Cooling is exerted on the runout table by applying water jets onto the hot surface of the strip and heat is removed from the steel by forced convective boiling. The associated boiling mechanisms are complex and include film, transition and nucleate boiling. A pilot-scale runout table test rig has been built to systematically study boiling heat transfer from a moving steel plate by employing industrial scale headers. Experiments were conducted using test plates moving at speeds between 0.3 m/s and 1.4 m/s. The plates were cooled down from 850°C to temperatures below saturation by a single water jet supplied through an industrial size circular nozzle. Based on these experiments heat fluxes were determined and further used to develop improved runout table cooling models.

The Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) vehicle is a trackless, free-steered vehicle used in underground hardrock mining to move large quantities of ore/rock to haulage trucks, ore dump locations, or crushing stations. The purpose of this paper is to show, through case study examples, how principles of human factors can be applied to improve the overall design of the LHD vehicle to enhance line-of-sight (LOS), improve posture and decrease whole-body vibration exposure (WBV). Vehicle modifications (larger cab windows, lower engine profile, smaller buckets, angled radiator profile) can lead to improved line-of-sight. The use of secondary viewing devices, such as cameras, can also improve line-of-sight and allow the operator to adopt a more neutral sitting posture. Seating systems that are suited to the underground mining environment can result in vibration attenuation and less vibration transmitted to the LHD operator. The connection between vehicle design, line-of-sight and driving posture needs to be considered in order to continue to improve the design of the LHD and enable the operator to work in a neutral posture with minimal vibration exposure. Changes leading to improved line-of-sight, vibration reduction, and a neutral sitting posture will lead to fewer LOS related accidents and decreased risk factors for musculoskeletal injury.

"The advantages and disadvantages of a mobile crushing plant with a belt conveyor system compared to a stationary crushing plant with haulage by heavy trucks are described. The capital expenditure and operational expenses are compared and the individual cost factors are explained.Every open-pit mine or quarry, however, is different and has to be assessed and analyzed individually in order to find the optimum and most economical solution. Due to the high truck haulage costs, many open-pit mines tend to the more economical solution with mobile crushing plants and continuous belt conveyor operation. IntroductionFor the material haulage within an open-pit mine the heavy truck is the most flexible means of transportation. However, due to the high fuel consumption, wear and labour costs, it is also the most expensive one. Therefore, many open-pit mines are looking for alternative solutions for the material transport A mobile belt conveyor system is most likely to meet the requirements because it is efficient and economical with regard to the power consumption. The material , however, has to be crushed at the mining face to lumps which are suitable for conveyor operation. For this purpose a mobile crushing plant is required.In some open-pit mines the crusher is also used to crush the material to lumps of smaller particle sizes in order to save crushing costs in the preparation plant.Although a cost comparison between a system with stationary crusher and truck haulage and a system with mobile crusher and belt conveyors favours in most cases the belt conveyor system, up till now only a few open-pit mines and quarries benefit world-wide from the advantages of the mobile crushing plant with continuous belt conveyor operation."
