"Potentially economic stratiform barite-sulphide deposits have recently been discovered in Devonian basinal facies rocks of the Kechika Trough of northeast British Columbia. This new mineral district is over 180 kilometres long and includes nine major occurrences, namely Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Fluke, Pie, Elf, Kwadacha and Sika. The Cirque is the largest known deposit, with reserves of atleast 30 million tonnes averaging 10per cent combined lead-zinc and 47 grams per tonne silver. The footwall rocks for the Cirque and other strati/rom barite-sulphide deposits in the area are rhythmically bedded baritic and pyritic carbonaceous black shales, siliceous argillites and cherts of probable Mid to Late Devonian age. These siliceous rocks overlie a succession of proximal to distal turbidites which are the basinal equivalent of Early to Mid Devonian carbonate reefs to the east. The siliceous facies is overlain by deeper-water black shales of probable Late Devonian to Mississippian age.Preliminary stratigraphic and sedimentological investigations suggest that the strati/arm massive pyrite and bedded barite deposits formed in third-order euxinic basins within a northwest-trending structurally controlled trough which, in the southern part of the district, was bounded by carbonate reefs. The exhalative event, which appears to have been accompanied by synsedimentary faulting, took place during the early stages of a major eastward-directed marine transgression that was probably related to rapid crustal subsidence. Dewatering of metal-enriched shales and subsequent brine discharge along fault zones within the trough, with the exhaled brines accumulating in seafloor depressions, is the mechanism envisaged for formation of the deposits. Convective circulation systems may have been established about the more deep-seated faults, in response to elevated heat flow levels."

"In January 1974, the Minerals Division of Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. made the strategic decision to add uranium to its active exploration commodities and through compilation studies selected northern Saskatchewan as the most attractive and cost-effective exploration area in Canada. In August 1974, 100 sq. miles were staked adjacent to Gulf Minerals' Rabbit Lake deposit and east of the Esso Minerals Midwest boulder train. Initial exploration was based on geologic models of the Rabbit Lake deposit.In the summer of 1975, surface surveys delineated radon anomalies which were drilled that winter and found to overlie anomalous concentrations of uranium in the regolith which forms the upper unit of the crystalline basement. Within the crystalline basement, one hole intersected graphite and pyrite with anomalous nickel-cobalt-arsenic. Geochemical and radiometric surveys followed in the summer of 1976. Drilling in the winter of 1977 intersected several zones of graphite and also anomalous, but uneconomic, uranium abundances. Also in 1977, Dahlkamp and Tan (1977) described the coincidence of graphite and uranium at Key Lake and ground EM surveys on CanadianOxy claims detected graphite conductors beneath 250 ft of Athabasca sandstone. Inco Limited joined the project in April 1977 as a 50% partner. The project area was then surveyed using the airborne INPUT EM method, which detected 84 miles of conductors, with associated graphitic metasediments. On the ground these were located with MaxMin surveys, and follow-up drilling located the ""Tent"" Lake uranium zone.In 1978, the Midwest and Dawn Lake discoveries were announced, 7 miles and 2 miles west of the Joint Venture (J.V.) claims; and, in part for this reason, the 1979 winter drilling was concentrated on the deeper west side of the property. Exploration hole 102-79 intersected altered and uraniferous rocks, but stepout holes were barren. Drill hole 153-79 tested an under-snow three-station radon anomaly east of hole 102-79 and intersected 33 feet of 7.51 % U3O8, confirming the disco very of the McClean North zone. The geophysical grid of the McClean North conductor system was extended and detailed a strong, continous conductor to the south, called McClean South. This was drilled in January 1980and hole 1004-80intersected 22 feet of 2.95% U3O8."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Ruttan Mine is located twenty-two km east of Leaf Rapids in northwestern Manitoba. The copper-zinc exhalative massive sulphide deposit is comprised of a series of individual and interconnected en echelon lenses which strike east 20 degrees north and dip south 70 degrees. The mine has been owned and operated by the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company since July 1987. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited began mining the orebody in 1973 from an open pit, but production has been entirely from underground since 1980. HistoryDuring the progression from open pit to underground mining, it was recognized that manual methods of ore reserve calculation were inadequate for responding to changing metal prices and evaluating alternative mine plans. The mine planning system that was developed is described in the paper, ""Computerization of Ore Reserves and Mine Planning Functions at Ruttan Mine"", presented by B.C.W. Haystead at the 1984CIM Annual General Meeting. At that time, programs for core logging, diamond drill hole plotting, grade interpolation, ore outline digitizing, and reporting had been developed by the Systems Department for use on Sherritt's UNIVAC 1100 mainframe computer. Telecommunications linked terminals at the Ruttan coreshack and office to the UNIVAC in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The same mine planning system was also used at a second property.Operation of the mine planning system was expensive, and it was evident that increased use required a costly upgrading of the UNIVAC in order to maintain an acceptable service level to all users. The system was re-evaluated,' and it was concluded that: core logging was not easily adaptable to a new property, nor flexible enough for exploration; plotting, grade interpolation, and digitizing required considerable manual effort; and that the UNIVAC operating system was difficult to learn.It was recommended that a study should determine if: core logging could be redesigned and/or implemented on a microcomputer; interactive graphics be used to reduce the effort for functions requiring visual interpretation; and the creation of input processors would assist users in setting up parameters for guiding the programs."

"Greater reliability of mineral deposit and reserve estimates can be attained through better quality control of the data and information acquisition, and the estimation processes. This paper reviews the following key requirements:1. greater awareness of the significant figures of both data and estimates, and better understanding of the probabilistic aspects of the estimates, their confidence limits and margins of error;2. greater reliability of the information that supports the estimates, by more explicit and more rigorous methods and standards for data acquisition and for interpretations;3. more quantitative estimations of geological/mineral continuity, based on improved three dimensional sampling patterns and the use of geostatistics; and 4. better integration at the project engineering and mine production stages, of the mineral deposit characteristics and mining method constraints, for more efficient mineral recovery and mine quality control.RÉSUMÉUne plus grande fiabilité des estimations des gisements et des réserves minières requiert plus d'emphase sur le contrôle de la qualité de I ‘acquisition de l'information et du processus d'estimation. "Kidd Creek is a large volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposit, located near the west end of the Abitibi greenstone belt, 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario. The rhyolite geology is characterized by a NNE-striking and steeply east-dipping package of rhyolite volcaniclastics upon which has been imposed a strong ESE-striking and north-dipping structural fabric . Massive rhyolite units with grey-black. chloritic cores and yellow, sericitic margins intrude as dykes into the stratigraphic footwall and as sills higher in the stratigraphy. Massive rhyolite units positioned near the top of the felsic pile exhibit an extensive marginal development of hydraulic fracturing and are termed crackle-brecciated rhyolite.The stringer sulphide zone is positioned in a lobate blanket of crackle-brecciated rhyolite at the top of the felsic pile. The stringer sulphide zone is characterized by a mature chemical alteration, being specifically depleted in alkalis and enriched in iron-rich chlorite. with accompanying silica, sericite and carbonate alteration. A suite of trace elements characterizes this mature alteration. The massive rhyolite units, which intrude lower in the rhyolite volcaniclastics, exhibit a core of weak chlorite alteration and strong marginal sericite alteration. Tight or unfractured massive rhyolite units are essentially devoid of sulphide mineralization and exhibit a suite of trace elements characteristic of this immature alteration. It is interpreted that the massive rhyolite units intruded into an already evolving system and ""choked-off"" active conduits carrying hydrothermal fluids and subsequently acquired an immature alteration signature. Rhyolite units positioned higher in the pile developed intense hydraulic fracturing and a mature alteration coincident with the formation of the stringer sulphide zone. In summary, a model, based strictly upon the rhyolite geology, is reviewed to assist in the exploration for volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposits."

"This paper briefly outlines the characteristics which should be considered in assessing the economics of mineral exploration, and illustrates such an assessment by using data from the Canadian base metal sector. Implications for the sector are found to include the following:(1) base metal exploration has the potential to create a substantial amount of new wealth;(2) investment incentive for exploration under current conditions is not unattractive over-all;(3) because of existing taxation policies, there is much more incentive for large companies to explore than for smaller enterprises;(4) succesful exploration is sensitive to the size, financial resources and organizational structure of the exploration entity;(5) the general level of recent exploration expenditures should be adequate to maintain the current rate of production and perhaps to support very modest growth; and(6) there is an important opportunity for growth in the sector.The findings of the study suggest that government policies should be made more flexible, in order to take into account the risks associated with exploration and with price fluctuations in the base metal sector. Recommendations are also made concerning improvements in provincial regulations for disclosure of exploration information."

"The Cape Ray Fault Zone of southwestern Newfoundland contains two notable electrum/ base metal sulphide quartz vein lode occurrences hosted by two contrasting lithological units, viz. a graphite schist horizon and a granite. The two occurrences, although in proximity, are not in direct contact, but, based on geochronological, geochemical and isotopic evidence, they were apparently deposited from hydrothermal fluids generated as a vapour phase from the magmatic progenitor of the Windowglass Hill granite.This paper provides further evidence, from REE and background A u and Ag data, for the magmatic origin of the hydrothermal fluids. Wall rocks to the electrum-bearing quartz veins in both the schists and granite have experienced a LREE depletion probably due to leaching by Cl-bearing solutions. Gold and silver contents are typically low in all rock types but there is a slight elevation in gold concentrations in those units in contact with the Window glass Hill granite. The granite also has the relatively highest gold and silver contents of any unit in the region.IntroductionThis paper presents the evidence from rare earth element (REE) and gold/silver concentration data for the magmatic origin of hydrothermal fluids responsible for deposition of the Cape Ray electrum deposits of southwestern Newfoundland. The two deposits occur in the Cape Ray Fault Zone (Fig. I) within the Windsor Point Group and Window glass Hill granite. The larger occurrence is called the Main Shear Showing and consists of a deformed quartz vein horizon, which extends for - 6 km, within the late Devonian Windsor Point Group. This unit is an intermixed ignimbrite and mafic tuff sequence with associated schists (metasediments) and gabbros. The host rocks to the mineralized quartz veins are interleaved graphite, chlorite and sericite schists. Basal ignimbrites within the Windsor Point Group have been dated, by Rb/Sr isotopic methods, at 377 ±21 Ma (Wilton, 1983a). The basal ignimbrites also have enriched REE patterns, an elevated initial Sr ratio (0.709) and a peraluminous-siliceous nature which suggest they resulted from the partial melting of continental crust (Wilton, 1984)."

"Most of the recent large discoveries of zinc, lead and silver in Western Canada are Paleozoic-aged stratiform deposits that occur within the limits of the tectonic sub-province of the Canadian Cordillera known as Selwyn Basin. Bounded on either side by coeval carbonate platforms. Selwyn Basin trends northwest for 1300 km from northeast British Columbia to Alaska. Paleozoic rocks of Selwyn Basin consist primarily of chert, shale and coarser-grained clastic sedimentary rocks with minor volcanic rocks.The Selwyn Basin deposits have few counterparts elsewhere in Canada, but have a close similarity in geological setting, mineralogy and morphology to well-known deposits such as McArthur (HYC) in Australia, Meggen and Rammelsberg in West Germany, and Sullivan in British Columbia. Recent studies of these deposits have led to an emerging, but now generally accepted, model of ore deposition in which stratabound zinc-lead-silver shale-hosted or ""sedimentary-exhalative"" (sedex) deposits are precipitated in active tectonic environments from metalliferous geothermal brines that rise to the sea floor along deep-seated fault zones. Although their mineralogy and ore metal zoning can be similar to that of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, most sedex deposits have only a weak genetic link with volcanism.Sedex mineralization in Selwyn Basin has been identified within three separate ages of shale or its metamorphosed equivalent. The lower Cambrian-age Anvil Camp in central Yukon Territory contains the only producing mine (Faro). Important lower Silurian-age zinc-lead mineralization is at Howards Pass along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border. Barite and zinc-lead-barite mineralization of upper Devonian age occurs across Selwyn Basin. Potentially economic deposits have been found at Macmillan Pass, along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border and in the Gataga District of northeastern British Columbia."

"Belts of Yellowknife Supergroup volcanic and sedimentary strata in the Slave Structural Province are separated by granitoid complexes. The strata and most intrusive rocks are 2.7 and 2.5 Ga old, but rocks around 3.1 Ga have been recognized in some of the complexes and are believed to represent a once-extensive sialic crust. Volcanics were erupted along rifts in this crust and the rifts became sites of crustal foundering and the development of troughs that filled with turbidites of volcanic and granitoid provenance. Present margins of the granitoid complexes may be close to the original margins of deposition of volcanics, with associated mineral deposits, and close to the thickest parts of basins of sedimentation.The Hackett River volcanic belt extends 100 kilometres between Mara River and Back River and is crudely S-shaped, with a northern sector surrounding a core of granitoid basement rocks, a northeasterly facin g central sector and a southerly facing southern sector. Up to 8 kilometres of andesitic volcanics with intercalated felsi c volcanic rocks are preserved within the central sector. The f elsic rocks include thick lenses of volcaniclastics with large, quartz-eye-bearing clasts, but the known metal deposits are not associated with these. Both of the deposit areas, the Hackett River area in the northern domal sector and the 'A itch ' Lake area 40 kilometres to the south in the central sector, are near the tops of relatively thin atypical volcanic sequences above suspected basement rocks. The Yava deposit near 'A itch , Lake overlies a unit of subaerially deposited, welded, andesit ic ash flows and the Hack ett River deposits overlie highly metamorphosed volcaniclastic rocks that include suspected ignimbrites.The deposits are notably argentijerous and lead-rich. They consist of stratigraphically zoned sheet-like bodies of iron sulphides, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite underlain by altered rocks containing chalcopyrite stringers. The Yava deposit was formed where hydrothermal fluids exuded through the fractured floor of a flooded caldera basin. The Hackett River deposits may have been formed in a similar setting and it is not inconceivable that all the known deposits in the belt were formed in a single large caldera basin, although there is no independent evidence for the required major fault separation between the Hackett River dome and the 'Aitch' Lake area."

"The recent opening of Muscocho's gold mine at Montauban, as weil as the discovery of several new copper-gold showings of a similar nature near the confluence of the Saguenay and St , Lawrence has revealed the existence of a new metallogenic gold province which is located within supercrustal units of Helikian age within the Grenville Province. Three metalliferous belts have been identified, each one of which is related to a series of SW-NE trending faults. The first is located in southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec. The second extends from the Balmat-Pierrepont mining district of New York State up to the Lac St. Jean region of Quebec, and includes the Montauban camp. The third follows the St. Lawrence river in Charlevoix County and along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.The gold mineralization which is present in the central portion of the Grenville Province is of two types: either stratiform or vein. Deposits of the first type, of which the Muscocho is the type locality, are economically the more interesting of the two. Not only is this mineralization stratiform, but also shows a distinct affinity to AI-rich, Mg-rich or calc-silicate-rich bands. As is the case with the Bousquet and Hemlo regions of the Superior Province, they are associated with layers which are rich in sillimanite and occasionally staurolite. A second parallel between the Bousquet and Montauban deposits might be the presence of manganesian gamets, which have been recognized at the two localities. Some of the mineralization in the central Grenville Province is located within thin bands of iron formation which are rich in arsenic.The stratiform gold deposits of the central Grenville Province are of exhalative origin and are located within a volcano-sedimentary terrane. It is probable that a part of the gold present in these Helikian deposits have been derived by remobilization of Archean mineralization. The vein showings form as a consequence of the remobilization of the Helikian strata during the Grenville metamorphism,"

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. "This paper presents a summary compilation of current Canadian coal research projects in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation. The compilation forms the basis for a review of present operations and technology, and of current research efforts. General research areas, requirements and priorities are suggested along with a discussion on achieving the research goals in terms of funds, facilities and staff. The current level of research funding in these areas is assessed. IntroductionCanada's coal production is expected to undergo major expansion over the next two decades in response to domestic demands on coal for electrical power generation, industrial uses and conversion to synthetic .fuels, and in response to export demands for both thermal and metallurgical coal s. Surface mining will continue to dominate, but underground mining will contribute an increasing proportion to total production.In Canada, coal research, particularly in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation (E, M & P), has been limited. Increased impetus has recently been given to this research with expansion of CANMET's activities and with the establishment of the Coal Mining Research Centre (CMRC). University researchers are branching into coal research; strata mechanics and preparation are popular in mining-related fields.With the increase in number of organizations and individuals involved in coal research, a means of keeping abreast of the ongoing work is necessary. An annual summary of the status of and developments in current research assists in providing this information. The CMRC prepared such a summary for Canadian coal E, M & P research in 1979 and it received favourable response, justifying the effort. A 1980compilation has been prepared and pro vides the basis for this paper; it is presented with a brief discussion on background, format and content.The compilation forms a basis for an examination of the current status of Canadian technology in E, M & P and of the ongoing research in each area. General research requirements are reviewed and programs and tasks are suggested, followed by a discussion of research goals in term s of priorities and achievement. An assessment is made of the level of research funding in Canada, with comparisons drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia."

Des quartzites très pars ont été dêcouverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix. On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an moins deux domaines géologiques différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le domaine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe metasédimentaire, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite. La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confère des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent. L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peu¬vent être utilisées pour la fabrication du verre et comme matière de charge.

Disseminated hypogene sulphide mineralization in the Lakeshore porphyry copper deposit (also called the Cyprus-Casa Grande deposit) of Arizona occurs in both a granodiorite stock and associated volcanic rocks. Structural development and vein paragenesis at Lakeshore are similar to other Laramide porphyry copper deposits of the southwestern U.S. Two major structural trends are present: intrusive contacts, copper-bearing potassic alteration veins and major post-mineralization Basin-and-Range type faults trend N-NW, whereas phyllic veins and secondary post-mineralization faults trend N-NE, and deep propylitic veins trend NE-ENE. Lithologic permeabilities, caused by fracturing in all rocks and by grain size distributions in volcanic rocks, controlled the distribution of copper mineralization. Differences in chemical compositions of host rocks did not affect are grade. Structural control, through density of chalcopyrite-rich veins, was the major control of are grade. Fracture density of other potassic vein types did not strongly affect grade. Within volcanic lithologies, permeability, as indicated by grain size distribution, provided a second-order, but significant, control of mineralization.

"The Red Dog deposit of the western Brooks Range, Alaska was discovered in the 1970s. Two mineralized areas are present, the Main and Hilltop deposits. With indicated and inferred reserves of 77 million tonnes of 17.1% zinc, 5.0% lead and 82 g/ tonne silver, the Main deposit of Red Dog represents one of the world's largest zinc-lead deposit s. Since serious evaluation by Cominco commenced in 1980, a better understanding of deposit geology has been gained through 10 715m of diamond drilling and concurrent geologic, geophysical and geotechnical studies. The Red Dog deposit is of Mississippian to Pennsylvanian or Early Permian age, and straddles a redox transition in fine-grained and chemical sediments of the Red Dog structural sequence.The Main deposit has been modified by regional Mesozoic thrust faulting and isoclinal folding, resulting in complex interrelationships between silica rock, sulphide rock and barite. Multiple lines of evidence suggest the Main deposit contains both a syngenetic stratiform and a replacement component. Ore fluids were probably derived by regional lateral movement of brines through a coarse clastic footwall aquifer, then upwards along block faults to the site of the Red Dog deposit.Historical PerspectiveThe region in the vicinity of the Red Dog deposit (Fig. 1) was first prospected by J. W. Kelley in the late 1880s (Orth, 1967). The first coordinated inland exploration was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1910-1911 and 1923-1926 (Smith, 1913; Smith and Mertie, 1930). The earliest reports of zinc-lead mineralization in the region include reference to samples collected at unknown locales by Eskimo prospectors (Anderson, 1944). In 1955 stratiform pyrite was discovered 19 km west of Red Dog by I.L. Tailleur of the U.S. Geological Survey (Tailleur, 1970). The first reported visit to what is known as Red Dog was by I.L. Tailleur in 1968, who was field checking a colour anomaly noted by B. Baker, a local bush pilot (Tailleur, 1970; Moore et al., 1986) ."

"ForewordA symposium on base metal deposits was held in Bathurst, New Brunswick, from June 10-13, 1990, sponsored jointly by the Geological Surveys Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy, the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association, and the Geology Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Papers prepared for the symposuim are being published as a series of articles in the CIM Bulletin. This third paper (the first was by Fyffe, et al., in Vol. 83, No. 938, the second is in this issue) in the series presents an overview of the tectonic setting and geochemistry of base metal deposits in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.ABSTRACTIt is well known that the classification system of volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) is based upon their metal content. This metal content, the result of hydrothermal solutions circulating within strata underlying the deposits, is generally thought to be related directly to two parameters: (1) the nature of the underlying stratigraphic sequence; and (2) the physico-chemical conditions that existed at the time of the hydrothermal event. Furthermore, these two parameters are, in turn, related to the tectonic setting. One must bear in mind that these parameters are diachronous and evolve with time. These factors are considered in our analysis of the major VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians. This analysis will describe the time and environment of formation of these deposits and integrate them into an evolving paleotectonic model.VMS deposits in the southeastern Quebec Appalachians formed during three distinct metallogenic episodes. During the first episode, which involved early closing of the Iapetus Ocean and associated destruction of oceanic crust by subduction processes(Early Ordovician?), cupriferous VMS deposits hosted by pillowed, mafic (boninitic) lava flows were formed in immature island-arc systems (""Cyprus-type"", e.g. Huntingdon deposit).In the second episode, which also occurred during the closure of Iapetus but at a later stage (Early to Middle Ordovician), mature island-arcs formed and hosted polymetallic VMS deposits (""Kuroko-type"", e.g. Eustis deposit).Finally, during culmination of the Taconic and/or Acadian orogenies (Middle Ordovician and/or Devonian), transtensional basins, associated with tholeitic to transitional mafic volcanism began to develop. Major sedimentation occurred contemporaneous with volcanism, and within this framework polymetallic VMS deposits were formed (""Besshi-type"", e.g. the Memphremagog deposit).Although incomplete, the proposed paleotectonic model represents the sequence of the tectonic settings that prevailed during the formation of the VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians."

"One of the most significant developments in environmental law has been the development of mandatory project review processes, at both the federal and provincial levels.FederalWhile, in the past, project review processes have, f or the most part, been spelled out in guidelines, the guidelines have not had the force of law. All that has changed, particularly at the federal level, with the Federal Court decisions commonly referred to as the Old Man River and Alameda and Rafferty Dam cases. These decisions, taken as a whole, are authority for the proposition that the Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order, SOR 82-487 is a law of general application, not a mere guideline which may or may not be applied. This federal environmental assessment process first provides for a screening, and, depending upon the results of the screening process, the possibility of a public review. This federal process only applies, however, when the proposal is being undertaken by a federal department, or where the Government of Canada makes a financial contribution, or where federal lands are involved, or where a federal licence or permit is required.Bill C-78, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, will replace the Federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order once it has been passed by Parliament. Currently the bill is being widely discussed, both between governments as well as public interest groups.ProvincialOn the provincial scene, there are three project review processes, one concerned with new mines, the second with energy projects and the third with all other major projects. The most recent initiatives taken by British Columbia are twofold. First, the Mine Development Review Process which was in the form of a guideline, has been replaced by the Mine Development Assessment Act. Second, the Major Project Review Process has been formulated and is to apply to four main categories of major projects:1. Pulp and paper production;2. Mineral smelting and refining;3. Chemical products; and4. Major ports and marinas.Energy projects are governed by the Energy Project Review Process which is legislatively mandated under the Utilities Commission Act."

"This paper presents and discusses the results of a detailed study conducted on the subject of energy consumption in the comminution of industrial minerals. The study was based on pilot circuit testing, plant operating data collection, detailed equipment data and literature research. The areas covered by investigations include: high efficiency classification; air classifiers for cement grinding circuits; grinding aids in dry grinding; and dry grinding circuit control based on particle size measurement. Results obtained indicate a large potential for the reduction of energy consumption, in particular in the cement clinker grinding circuits. Better classification techniques and correct application of grinding additives can significantly reduce power used per tonne of product and also substantially increase grinding circuit output."

"The early history of the Geological Survey of Canada is closely connected with coal geology investigations in the Atlantic Provinces. In 1843, Sir William Logan, the first director of the Geological Survey, measured the 4441m thick shore section at Joggins in Nova Scotia. Detailed mapping of the coalfields were subsequently carried out by H. Fletcher during the latter part of the nineteenth and first part of the present century. During the 1920-1940 period, the stratigraphy of the carboniferous WIZS' established by WA. Bell, who later also became a diretor of the Survey. Bell's work WIZS' followed by coal geology investigations of A.A. Hayes, W.S. Dyer, EA. Goranson, G. W.H. Norman, J.E. Muller, T.B. Haites and P.A. Hacquebord.The activities and accomplishments of the Survey geologists during the past 150 years are presented in this paper.General Outline of Survey Activities in Coal Geology During the Past 150 YearsIn 1842, when the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) was established, the industrialization of the major countries of Western Europe and North America was actively persued. The energy required for this industrialization was obtained from the only fossil fuel then available, namely coal. The measure of a country's major mineral wealth at that time was the availability of mineable resources of coal. Eastern Canada, where mining had been carried out since 1720, was known to be well endowed with valuable coal deposits. In the major fields of Nova Scotia (Fig. I) several large-scale operations had been started during the middle and latter part of the nineteenth century.The significance of coal, therefore, was well understood, and exploration surveys specifically oriented toward coal were carried out by the Geological Survey from its earliest beginning. The first report of a detailed geological description of the coal measures of eastern Canada was prepared in 1843 by Sir William Logan (1845), the founder and first director of the Geological Survey of Canada. This early work was continued and complemented in 1896 by H. fletcher (1906), who during the latter part of the nineteenth century and first part of the present century systematically mapped the coal-bearing regions of Nova Scotia, which he considered all to be of approximately the same age."
